Hello and welcome back to the OverClocked ReMix on OurStage thread.

July 31st: finals begin!

Out of six total tracks from OCReMixers and OCR community members, two have made it into the finals this month.

* "Breathing You In" feat. Jillian Goldin
* ROMance

Both are my tracks - I'm happy of course that I made it this far, but it would have been nice to see guys like Skrypnyk and OverCoat make it past the quarters/semis too :( Maybe next month!

Anyway, finals last until 11:59PM EST tonight and ALL judging is in the Finals channel. There are many battles that can take place (up to 1035) but any and all votes count. In previous months, OC ReMixers have been as close as 2nd or 3rd place! Lots of other great music this month too, from artists like Trifonic (who I highly recommend.) So, if you can spare any time at all, I would appreciate your support. :)

FAQ

What is OurStage?

A monthly song contest with tens of thousands of entries and dozens of genres. Anyone can enter for free - if you're an artist, you should too! Most of each month is spent determining the top 20 songs in any given category. In the last seven days of the month, only the top songs remain. The quarterfinals contain the top 20 songs of each genre, while the semifinals cut it down to the top 10 in each, to selet the #1 song in each genre. The winners of the semifinals all receive a $100 prize.

During the finals (on the last day of the month), the winners from the semifinals go on to compete against each other for a $5,000 grand prize.

Artists from OCR have been successful on OurStage so far, due in part to the assistance of people like you! Both Jill Goldin (pixietricks) and sgx have won the grand prize.

How can I help?

First, register an account at www.OurStage.com - it's free and takes less than a minute.

Then, click "Judge" and navigate to a category where an OC ReMixer is competing. Here are the categories:

Club/Dance - http://www.ourstage.com/judge?channel=79-club-dance
Techno/Ambient - http://www.ourstage.com/judge?channel=79-club-dance
Comedy - http://www.ourstage.com/judge?channel=131-comedy

You will be presented with a pair of songs. You cannot choose which songs to vote on, as the system is randomized. Listen to at least 15 seconds of each song, and then select which song you like more, and by how much. When you vote favorably for a song, you encourage that song to move up in the rankings.

NOTE: Once you have listened to at least 15 seconds of any given song, you never have to listen to that song again for the remainder of the round (ie. quarterfinals). This will save you time when you want to vote quickly in hundreds of rounds.

Anything else I should know?

Please do not cheat to support OCR artists. Do not create alt accounts or use any kind of automated scripts. Do not simply vote against popular song ("voting down") to help us. No one in the running for the grand prize wants an illegitimate victory.

If you don't want to contribute your time or support the ReMixers listed because you don't enjoy their music, please do not feel any pressure to. OCR's involvement on OurStage is unofficial as it is simply individual ReMixers.

What's in it for me?

OurStage is a great place to discover new music. I personally have found a bunch of great artists there, and a ton of great songs. Plus, you get a sense of satisfaction knowing that you helped ReMixers who have put in countless hours of time into this community in the form of free ReMixes.

How long does the quarterfinals last?
Four days. Then semifinals are two days, and finals are ooooone 24 hour period.

Congrats, soc! And glad to see jewbei made it again this month. None of my songs (except the collab with Andy) got up there this time around, and the same thing happened to Audix and sgx. It does vary. But you can bet I'll still be voting to support you guys!

Alright, I guess this is worth bringing up. Yeah, Proticity is in the quarterfinals as well. However, it is worth noting that he has cheated on OurStage before on the behalf of other artists, and on another occasion for himself.

but how did he cheat..isnt that impossible? because i remember Daniel Palmer telling me that ourstage tracks everyone IP addresses to see if they made any duplicate accounts to cheat.

He uses scripts. And he was caught and removed those other times. Let's just hope they catch on again, if he is cheating now.

I listened to all the songs in my category [experimental] and they are all absolutely terrible shit, save for like one or two okay tunes. If I lose this category I'm going to RAGE

So I finished with two categories and doing a third atm...damn most of these entries are terrible. Makes an already boring task even crappier  .

Thanks for your votes so far everyone! There are still a few days left in the Quarterfinals (they end on Monday night) and OCReMixers are doing pretty well. However, things could still shift a lot, so every vote counts. We need to be in the Top 10 to progress.

Bump - great job everyone, Skrypnyk, myself and Jill all made it into the semifinals! Unfortunately, Jewbei and OverCoat did not, but you can't win them all... weird voting going on though, I'll tell you that much.

I don't get it? I'm pretty sure I had the best song [read: the only decent song] in the category. I hate it when shitty artists get more votes than me.

Fucking 11th place, seriously. I'm not having a very good week.

Ah, sorry for the other folks who didn't make it to the semis...

Judging anything below the finals tends to be easier. I remember doing that blitz of judging for the finals back when zircon, SGX, and pixietricks were all up there, it was difficult on account of a lot of the tracks stacked up next to one another being both good.

I'm coming in a bit late, but I'll be sure to try and vote for the semis. KF

Jillian Aversa

Hey, nothing wrong with coming in late! Especially in the semi-finals, it hardly takes any time at all to vote. There are only 45 rounds in any given genre, because it's only the top 10 tracks. I'm gonna do all mine soon...

zircon

With less than 6 hours to go, the standings are crazy but votes are definitely still needed. Skrypnyk is #10 (out of 10)!! Help him out and give an up-and-coming ReMixer a shot at $5k.

I'm on about 400 right now. BYI is a fantastic song! It needs vote love!

There are a few good tracks in the running now, but IMHO, Andy's is every bit as good if not better than the best of them. I still support zircon's music!

Vote, vote, vote!

Whoops, hadn't posted so far since the finals started. Thank you to everyone that has voted at ANY stage, for myself or others. Less than 4 hours to go now, and it's really anyone's game. If you can spare even 5 mins, you can make a difference on here.

Bah. I was able to get in a little Finals judging after midnight last night, but I didn't get home 'til 11:30 tonight. Managed to get in only 100 or so.

zircon/pixietricks' songs came up just a handful of times. Found a couple new songs to favorite while I was at it. KF

It's cool, Kizyr. This month was much tougher, for a number of reasons (I'm guessing) -

1. Better songs overall.
2. The songs in popular genres had more mass appeal and tighter hooks. The #1 track was really great.
3. BYI had a long intro, and ROMance was in Comedy, a genre that I'm sure some people looked down on.
4. More people voting overall (eg. more competition - less influence of individual votes.)

It's also interesting to note that Daniel Palmer, one of the OurStage staff members, said that honest voting increases influence. In other words, voting just SAME on everything and BY FAR for certain songs means your votes don't count as much. He elaborated more, but basically said you need to thoughtfully listen to all songs, have preferences, and be honest. Perhaps it detects if you are obviously favoring a single song over and over?

Anyway, I really appreciate all the support - not just for me, but for all OCR artists this month. Best of luck to everyone this month; the song limit is now three per artist, so it should be interesting to see where this goes.

Yeah, I remember hearing the first 15 seconds of both ROMance and Breathing You In and thinking that might be a real handicap this time around. I tend to listen to the first 10-20 seconds and then skip to the middle to hear how it sounds later on, but, I don't imagine most folks do that.

I do like the judging system overall (particularly the "battle" setup, as it encourages a lot more honest assessments), but I think songs with really good lyrics are at a bit of a disadvantage. I can't think of any way around that, though. Also, by the finals stage, a good portion of it I think ends up being genre vs genre.

As a statistician I'd be a bit interested in knowing more about this (though for obvious reasons I wouldn't expect him to divulge too much detail). It sounds like a way of weighting someone's votes based on how they tend to vote in general. So if you just vote at the extremes one way or the other, your votes could have a lower weight; if you use the middle categories more, then voting for the extreme ends would carry more weight.

HotOrNot actually uses a similar algorithm to correct for people's voting styles. KF

A lot of labels don't do that either. If a demo tape doesn't grab their attention within the first, say, 30 seconds, they'll just toss it and keep going through the demo pile for something interesting.

This probably has a stupid answer but how do you delete a song? I wanted to put up a different version of Brushless Motor but couldn't find any way to remove the old one.

Sole Signal

You can't delete songs. Supposedly Daniel's working on it but it hasn't been implemented yet as far as I know.
