Rare Candy did. I remember that VERY clearly. It's one of the reasons why I bought their album for $5. CD is amazing, by the way. They gotta be one of my favorites I saw that weekend.

Damnit, I KNEW I should've bought that CD!

You can always ask Dom for more... I bet his band has 'em still for sale. Or you can always hit their myspace page. http://www.myspace.com/rarecandyband

The song you liked the most isn't on the page... but I'm sure you can get it some how... hint hint...

Posting power go!

For those that don't know (and rightly so), this is Kim, the chicka that was running around like a mofo trying to get the DJ setup running on Saturday night. (+1 sharkhat of awesome)

Firstly I would like to thank bLiND, Jade and QPA for not only putting up with a complete stranger telling them the going-ons, but also for bLiND and QPA learning the DJ setup in less then a hour (shoved up into our tiny room) and jumping on the roster in a heartbeat.

Originally the whole shenanigan was QPA. DJ Awesome and myself trying to finagle some time in the jamspace for game-related techno stuff (hell if I'm carrying all that equiptment for nothing). We were given a mere 15 minutes live each, so I dropped my slot for bLiND to pump his new remixes. Well worth it I do believe. :D
In the end it ended up being bLiND (30min), DJ Awesome (15min), QPA (15min), followed by No Carrier (who also did the NES visuals you saw all weekend!).

A thanks towards Escariot and EK for letting us practice during the starting concerts.

A huge friggen THANKS to all of you that enjoyed the impromtu DJ session there Saturday Night (and the chiptunes on Friday Night!). I'm glad some one out there enjoyed the electronic stuff on top of the amazing rocking-out bands. That's what Magfest is all about, Games and MUSIC. We all appreciate your feedback.

The vid of bLiND didn't turn out, but we have some really good photos coming as soon as they finish processing.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kCZ22FD2cs4 - DJ Awesome
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qDZngKStjp0 - QPA

From this comes great news for next year, straight from the mouth of Dom:

Next year the Jamspace will be open again to be purely Jamspace. That means wandering in and Jamming out. So completly unscheduled stuff.

The Open-Mic will instead be hosted in a different location.

The Chiptunes and DJ session will be moving to the MAIN CONCERT HALL (After the main line concerts of course). So next year, we may actually be prepared! (bLiND, you gotta come back to play now :D).

Later when we have timeslots and more info down for Magfest 8 I will be organizing the DJs and music makers for that portion of the night, so you'll be hearing from me.

And that is all that news I have to drop at the given moment. Thank you all for coming out and making Magfest 7 amazing as hell. I hope you all return for Magfest 8, we're gonna blow the roof off!

First off, thank you for this. I told my housemates how white-ly I danced and I had to show them something. This was definitely one of the best moments I can recall, and my legs are still actually recovering from the dancing. Thank you all so much for that ridiculous set, and I definitely am hoping the audio rips make it somewhere online, cause the sets were sick. Great job all around in JamSpace, with much respect to all who planned (Kim, Noah, Dom, etc.) and played.

Maybe Jade will do some heavy editing of their honeymoon tape and get some sweet hand-cam video of all of us shaking booty. Oh, and I'm sorry to that one person whom I accidentally elbowed. Dancing is not without its casualties! Blame Avaris's beer.

Great efforts already in the works from the looks of it. Don't forget to sleep sometime, though.

And I need a hot dog next year.

We're praying and relying on God that He will find a way for us to come back for MAGFEST VIII. Hope it happens... bLiNd would really want to do another set... maybe one for 2 hours... ya never know. =P If we do come back, please do hang with us more this time. Peace out!

Just randomly searching for stuff until I stumbled upon this. I didn't know AE had a "rap" persona. Such an awesome performance, man. I've always been impressed by this song 'cause I think it's the fastest one I've ever heard, but you managed to keep up quite well with the lyrics. Love the background chiptune music as well.

EK here, aka the girl in the green jacket running around like crazy all weekend. I was one of the people running Jamspace again this year - particularly the graveyard shift after concerts - and occasionally I'd help out with things in the main concert (like hazard response after the Bondies trashed the place).

I love Magfest. I love the people who come to it, gamers and musicians alike. While I certainly can enjoy the gaming end of things first hand, I don't play a single instrument nor do I write any music. I can play games at home, or with friends at one another's houses, but having the amazing opportunity to see so many talented bands and solo acts play live or showcase their remixes in person is truly a treat for me. It's why I keep coming back year after year.

You guys really make Magfest for me, and for that I want to give you my most sincere thanks. I would gladly drop every other convention that I go to in a year JUST to be at Magfest and see you all - even if it's just for a day.

This year, Dom let me try something a bit different in Jamspace and gave me a two hour block (approximately) for several DJs to spin. Neo really stepped up and took over handling that end of things to make sure that the DJs were ready for me, and Escariot and Dino were both super helpful in making sure that the sound was exactly as it should be for the event. No Carrier was likewise incredibly gracious and agreed to put on more of his visual effects for the whole event. I was hoping that it would be well received. My expectations were all met and exceeded within the first set. As Neo previously posted, she is taking over that aspect of Magfest for next year - and I know that it will be even better in her hands.

Thank you to everyone from here who came out. It has been the highlight of my year, and yes, I know that it's still early January. A special thank you to the rest of the Jamspace staff, to DJs bLiND, No Carrier, Q-PA, and Awesome, and to Neo.

See you next year.

Next year I've got to spend more time in JamSpace. I came in, heard some guy rapping about weaboos and left. I spent most of my time in the game room (being a gamer and not a musician) but it sounds like I missed a lot of good stuff. However, I was so excited to be able to play people besides my friends in fighting games I kind of forgot about it.

Also, I was surprised at how many attractive ladies were at MAGFest. My hat is off to you gamer ladies, who are both nerds and good-looking. Especially that girl who cosplayed as Yuffie.

That dude was fucking hilarious. Busta and I were just cracking up. We started raising the roof and he was like "YEAH" probably because we were the only ones really responding to his music.

The LAST Jamspace guy was the worst though... he played like sunday morning at 3 AM or somesuch... this random goth guy in a fishnet shirt playing probably the shittiest industrial I'd ever heard, and he had this little video thing set up playing horror movies... You'll find his picture next to "pretentious" in the dictionary. He had a keyboard made of duct tape also.

But anyway, I think the higher number of women at this year's MAGFest is just more evidence of how much it's reaching out to more and more people each year. KF

Question to all before I pass it on to Brendan:

From what I can tell (especially since I wasn't there for the meat of it), it was a little difficult to balance all the different music concerts. Chiptune and Open Mic concerts in Jamspace with bands in the concert room. What if the smaller instrumental groups and DJs could perform in between the different band sets in the concert room? I personally think it would add a good deal of weight and legitimacy to the performance, and get a wider audience to boot.

This might seem like a viable option. The one thing I'd be concerned with is how the shows are organized. If you want a show to be bangin' it needs to flow from one act to another. Also I think DJs need more than 15-30 minutes!

I didn't forget; gathering my pics and my thoughts take time.
I love good buddies, video games and watching talented musicians perform. MAG is the jump-off! I needed more than four days to catch up with the shows, the games, and with all the new friends I didn't get to talk to at length. My performance? Not bad for first time ever, with lyrics I haven't fully memorized. I'll have something for next year, for sure. Those who watched, it's a collab from Taucer and myself, which did alright at DoD.

EDIT: Hotlinks from Gallery failed miserably; see my next post for pics.

Chiptune and Open Mic concerts in Jamspace with bands in the concert room. What if the smaller instrumental groups and DJs could perform in between the different band sets in the concert room? I personally think it would add a good deal of weight and legitimacy to the performance, and get a wider audience to boot.
1) The problem with that is that the sound guys, the concert staffers, etc. need a break every once in a while.
2) The bands need time to clear off the stage and re-set. If you have DJ's up there and loud music and people jumping about, it's going to be next to impossible to communicate.
3) The concert attendees could also use a break... grab water, use the restroom, etc.

So the only way to make that work would be to make each performer a part of the full concert line-up, which will make the concerts last 12 hours each. And nobody has the stamina for that.
It's a good idea, but sometimes you have to step back and look at it from a logistics standpoint.

4) Why does everyone feel that going straight to Brendan is the best idea to get something booked? There are department heads for this kind of thing. If you nag Brendan, you'll either get one of two responses... 1) Ok. (Brendan pokes Dom, Dom gets to you) 2) Talk to Dom (Dom gets to you). The latter of which will be the less annoying option in general.

If you don't know how to get ahold of Dom directly, I'd be the next person to get ahold of, then I'll get ahold of Dom.

If you have feedback or ideas for JamSpace specifically, or music ideas in general, please register on the JamSpace forums (http://www.conjamspace.com/smforum) and post your ideas. We'd love ideas / feedback, and forums are the best way to keep everything centralized.

Uhhh...it was the big giant room with like a million TVs and every game ever. And Street Fighter 4. It was behind the vendors and the arcade games in the ballroom. It was pretty epic.
Yeah it's the one he set up his 360 in for Rock Band.

If by every game, you mean fucking Super Smash Bros 400,000x.

The game room just wasn't as fun this year as it used to be. Too much smash, not enough diversity.

My Rock Band setup was the shit because I had so many songs.
But seriously, it was there for 3 days and you fuckers couldn't get me ONE achievement?
Worthless.

I walked in the game room like three times. Spent the rest of the time drunk, rapping and serving hot dogs.

I brought my PowerGlove and other obscure shit, like Ikaruga, Secret of Mana and Contra 3.
Fuck your Rock Band.

But my main problem was there were too few working NESs and even a few 16-bit systems were giving me problems. The staff really needs to fit their NESs with some of these (http://www.nintendorepairshop.com/shopexd.asp?id=63)...

Also, no DDR or Beatmania machines like last year, but that's another story.

Anyway, I finally got around to re-recording my DJ set tonight:
http://digamejh.melankolly.com/mixes/q-pa_Magfest_VII.mp3 (~50MB)
Like last year, it was recorded live to retain the same feel as the original. It's not perfect, just more error-free than the original set was.

Personally, this mix is quite astray; not as good as last year I think... As Neo said, the playlist was literally finalized like 2 hours beforehand. And even then it's just the highlights of a planned longer set, hence the fact that each song is a different subgenre and tempo (and not as meme-tastic as last year's was). I was trying to use my amateurish scratching skills to try and liven things up (since I couldn't dance as much due to the staging) but in the end, listening back, they just distract from the songs.

In other words, the mix is at that awkward stage between a tight, concise practiced set like last year, and a full-blown, evolving set like next year will hopefully be.
Next year will be off the hook though, I promise. 8-)

Picts & video coming this weekend. I like what I'm seeing so far though!

Edit: Neo & EK: Welcome to OCR! I was hoping for some cross-pollination between the 2 groups!

Edit 2: I apologize again for the track that "Italo Disco" is mashed-up with; I thought it fit and was funny. Besides, it was worth it to see some making-out on the JamSpace floor!

making an all-encompassing ocr slot on the main stage, where remixers can bring their arrangements in front ot a live audience, isn't a bad idea - but just imagine the logistics of it

there would really have to be a lot of planning and a lot interest to where it would work - and the site would have to condone it obviously

but if everyone who's at mag just planned to do one song - got it together beforehand and did it well - it would be pretty spectacular and def a highlight

The Pezman
01-11-2009, 07:32 PM
New idea:

What if the ragtag musical groups could compete for an act on the mainstage? It would make everyone step up their game somewhat, and create and supply sheet music (or other way to learn the song) ahead of time.

A face-shot of you, highly encouraging facial expression like Harmony's DM face, one of Norg's or Virt's faces, or wearing a hoodie like Liontamer. Bonus points if you fit a hot dog or bacon in there.

Jose (screw accents I'm lazy) always looks like he's gonna suddenly transform into Vin Diesel, drop a one-liner, and blow something else.

Come to think of it he looks a lot like Vin, too. Oh shi-

Holy shit, Jose IS Vin Diesel.
I think we found Jose's cosplay for next year...

Now that people recognize me, I should just grow my hair out long (I'll look like a dark haired hulk hogan with my hairline) and grow a massive beard. I'll also dress up in spandex.
Nobody will have a clue who I am.

Yeah, I know... somehow, I didn't realize editing Brad's post that way wouldn't say what I wanted to. Which was that there really aren't many girls on the Internet who aren't paired off. Meh. Epic fail for me.

As a MAGFest staffer with apparent ability to lord over mere attendees, I am informing you that said beard must be eliminated for the sake of obtaining MAG-booty. Who knows? Maybe the armband will be green next year...

I found a video of there Chrono Trigger medley that Rare Candy played that was totally badass and awesome.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dT80vGcsAX0&feature=channel_page

Was this song on Rare Candy's EP? Also, I don't see a way to buy their EP on their Myspace. Could someone help me out? I really love this medley!

Yes, the CT mix is on their four-track EP, and yes, it's awesome. The group as a whole is better live though, which isn't necessarily a negative comment.

Ah, I kid. I love you, man. In a totally platonic way, of course. I wouldn't want Brad to get jealous...

I shipped some Jamspace footage to Dom yesterday (Thursday afternoon, I believe). Really the main holdup has been getting video from other people so we can edit things into more interesting segments, although that's mostly for the concerts (but there was a lot of other people filming in Jamspace too). There's a whole new department for this whole operation, and we're just trying to get organized right now. Next year we'll do a much better job of gathering footage on-site and keeping in contact with other filmers so we can have the best coverage of MAGFest ever.
