Some aspects of this reminded me of Delerium (the other side of Front Line Assembly). I was wondering if you'd want to do another version pushing that sound even further, taking out the orchestral elements and replacing them with that "ethnic" techno sound that Delerium achieves? It seems that it might even be possible to replace the choir with the tribal garble/chanting, etc. that Delerium is so fond of using. Just a thought... It would make for a completely different, but i think, equally creepy feel in the song...

Anyway, good job, just wanted to share the idea.

Fantastic. Been waiting to see this pop up on the OCR home page. I remember thinking that it was impossible to remix OWA and really do the song justice.
... so much for that theory.
Congrats for proving me wrong. Still loving this remix, even after months of listening in the WIP forum. 8)

i thought this one was already on OCR...i downloaded the WIP a long time ago and have been enjoying this very much. better grab the official OCR version cause it could be different (wouldn't know why the song was totally badass when it was still a work in progress). I think the vocals really make the song sound great, even though they are the original they don't sound like they are. they add the OWA part to it because if they weren't there it just wouldn't be right

Finally. I knew this one would make it as soon as I heard it in WIP form. THis is, without a doubt, the best remix of this I have heard to date. Congrats Trenthian.

 INFO:
For those who already downloaded the song about 1:15h ago, please redownload it, because there went something wrong with the file. It's updated now. Thanks. =)

To the song:
I was very impressed after I first heard that song from Trenthian (while it was still in early WIP stage). He just stared out remixing and this was the song he learned the most for further remixes like his "Breath of Fire - His First good Deeds" remix. So, yeah. This song is in fact older. =)

Trenthian captured a very good mood of FF7's "One Winged Angel", together with some avertions from songs like "The Prelude" or "Aerith's Theme". It's experimental, indeed. And you have to listen to it at least twice to like it. But after that, it's really an agressive sounding tune.

I keep the field open for reviews from other listeners, because Trenthian already had a hard time with my suggestions while he was still working on it. *g*

cheers ^_^

This is a pretty good remix of OWA. Probably the best I've yet heard, though I've heard some really bad ones. I've also heard some downright offensive remixes of this song...

Though this is a damn good remix of OWA, it still isn't quite the one I'm waiting for. Of all the remixes I've heard I still like the original the best, and it is only topped by its reorchestrated version made by the Nobuo himself. Someday I hope to see that uber-remix.

When are we gonna see Halo remixes already?

Sweet! A remix of One Winged Angel! And it doesn't blow! <=O Kick me in the junk and call me a priest, I never thought I'd see the day. I'm impressed, there are a lot of ideas crammed into this remix. There's an oboe playing beside an electric guitar that's playing beside a choir beside cheesy synth bass. Now, combining this variety of sounds into one cohesive song would be a challenge enough, but this song manages to pack all this magic into a remix of One Winged Angel - the definitive "impossible to remix" song. I tip my hat to you, sir. This is damn fine work. :nicework:

EDIT: Oh man, I didn't even catch that small section of the main theme stuck in at 2:02. Crazy.

I feel to bring out the emotion a little more the bongo drums could have had a bit of reverb added to them.

The vocal samples are overused in my opinion, they're thrown everywhere, the actual latin translation of the lyrics is muddled beyond recognition. Which would be like taking a rap song by, say, eminem, and mixing the order of the words around.

But the instrumentals and the electronic element in this piece are enjoyable to listen to. It just has too much confusion for me.

I find it rather odd that nobody has picked up one of the most glaring points about this remix...which is that for the most part this is just the original vocals overlapped with a thin, empty sounding bongo drum loop (if you REALLY want to split hairs, youd bring up the fact that now the lyrics make no real sense)

There are some occasional countermelodies (while they are dissonant, it was pulled off semi-well, so I wont comment further on those) but they didnt really go with the main melody....especially the part at the end when the oboe comes in and plays along with the melody going into some riffs which sound like the scale of G-Minor or the traditional music from Egypt and the surrounding area

Towards the end there's some arpeggios (which would have been a chance to sneak in the prelude, by the way...just to show 'em :P) and while I appreciate their being on a square wave I find myself asking why.
To me it was like putting a slammin ukelele solo in the middle of a death metal track...entirely the wrong voice to have used since it bears no relation to anything else that was used in the track.

The track is also too...flat? Lacking in progression?
Yeah, lacking in progression...thats a good term, I guess.
What I mean is, the track doesnt change at all...all five minutes of it are the same choir with bongos and the occasional scale in the background.

What we have here is OCRs longest intro to a remix. I say that, because all 5 minutes are an introduction to a greater tune...an impression I also get from the 'ending' to this one which ends on sort of a "....oh" note, rather than the "YEAH!" note that the original ended on and that anything which attempts to emulate it should also end on.

While it isnt a bad track in the way that you can't listen to it for more than a minute...
It's a bad track in the fact that its dull, unoriginal and goes nowhere.

That said, people seem to like it....so I guess its good for certain people.

Claps suck ass pretty much in any song, and this one isn't an acception. I hate claps. Claps = stupid cheese club dance tunes or newb FL trance for me, and I hate both.

A lot of this isn't very interesting without the original vocals, though some of the stuff is interesting. Mixed feelings on this. Drums are kinda weak even not taking into account the horrendous claps, in my opinion. The bongos are nice, but the pattern seems a bit spastic and non-rhythmic. This could have been shorter. I was getting bored by the end, though I liked the guitars and stuff like that.

Hrmm. Good-ish.

Trenthian
01-29-2004, 10:05 AM
personally, I think trenthian is an arogant bastard, and a rude and abrasive character. He probably doesnt bathe either.

Mostly, I find most of Vig's write up on this Peice to be EXACTLY how I feel about it.

It started off as an experiment in vocal work (vocals are teh win) So really the mix Relies HEAVILY on them... because going to the roots its them that this was all about in the first place...

Some people showed interest in this in the WIP forums, so I really didnt want to let them down.

I may update this peice in the future with a MUCH more focused peice but to tell the truth i really think that the arranged version of this song played by the Tokyo pops is all the arranging this peice will ever need and I am content to have played ball with this Idea.

Im just a guy looking to have some fun.

Eccles, you still make me smile man :)
(I really love your honesty, as blatant as it is.)

When it was in the WIP forum, someone asked the question "Does it stand alone without the vocals?" at the time... it was true that it did not... and that is why the second half is where the party is at. I now understand that Vocals aside, A mix MUST carry itself as a mix... Vocal rips over a beat are just as bad as the original over a beat. In conclusion, as groovable as the beggning is or not, and in retrospect on how much the second half pwns your heiny, I hope you folks listening enjoy it as it really was a Mix for the peeps... (im usually really selfish about my music. AND I HATE FF7 ... crucify me if you will.)

If I "were" to do an updated OWA... it would be a different mix entirly, not an update... and it wouldnt be this song... it would be something else... like 4 measures of insanity from Kid Nikki the radical ninja...

I would like to take this moment to extend a very much deserved THANK YOU! to compyfox. he ish teh 1337 mixar! THANK YOU!

Things to come Maybe! ... highlight and copy to text.

I jest... in truth, Things I would like to do in an update... Different Bass- More awesome lead oboe, a longer version of the second half material where Im actually mixing, The most awesome Ethnic Percussion solo on the planet, (I hand placed EACH and every drum strike from the SF2s, its not a wavform loop... its midi loopage controlling sf2) I would have Done this mix as orchestral, but its been done (professionally.)

I promise there will be no hand claps in an update if every there is one...
but like the Triangle and Cowbell... I will miss them dearly.

I'm going to say, I -love- the 2nd part of this mix. The first part... I could entirely do without, quite frankly. But the author realizes that, I see, and has already stated it before me, so that's fine. The 2nd part does in fact rock my socks with that wonderful oboe though. Nice stuff there. It's a good omen when your original work outshines the stupid stuff.

One of the best OWA remixes I've heard. What I want to know is how he got ahold of those choir samples.... It is indeed a great remix. I hope this one doesn't get removed. I've listened to it for about a 2 weeks now and I can't stop listening to it. It's a great song. It could use improvement, so I hope you keep working on it Trenthian!

Damn~ haha, I dunno why everyone's bashing this remix so bad. --

When I can nod my head and tap my foot to a mix then I think it's pretty badass, so this is instantly one of my favorite mixes. <.<

Even though it relies heavily on the vocals, I think the entire feel is boosted by the ethnic and club percussion, and the changing of some underlying chord structures while still staying with the original vocals is very well done.

It rocks my socks. <.<

A lot of different types of instruments thrown together, but they mix well. Oo; Electric guitar, hand drums of various types, electronica, BRASS & OBOE, choral vocals, Middle-easten instruments too...

... if I keep on going on about all my opinions on this mix, I'm gonna be late for class, so I'll just stop now.

P.S. I don't understand Latin, so don't have a beef with the vocals. ^^ I am pretty bugged when people attempt to speak Japanese like they're l337 when they really don't know it, so I guess I'm just hypocritical. Ignorance is bliss.

i never post here. i only do when i think the remix is something pretty good, or so blatantly horrendous that i want to rip off the ears fo the remixer for remixing a track.

that said.

this is good and fun, and i'll prolly listen to it in the future. ^_____^ not one of the best remixes on the site by far, but like i said, fun.

i particularly like how the lyrics countermelodied each other at points, as well as some parts of the music. but the track was a bit repetitive, and a bit empty. needed more going on. maaaaaaaaan, if you redo the remix one day, even if it was completely different like ya said. i would *so* listen to that. heehee.

Without a doubt, my favorite Final Fantasy remix, this is a great mix, i repeat myself, without a doubt. although i wish i knew exactly what they were saying. I never really liked how it was put into the game the way it was, but now it is so much better.

Lucan
01-31-2004, 06:38 PM
Well, I really liked the first 18 seconds, but the kinda heavy beat slows the song down a bit while the vocals used seem to speed it up. Against the judges I think the vocals are used well, though not structured enough. The "Sector 7" influence does not disturb the mix but distracts me a bit from the threatening undertone of the song.
Lucani opinio: Good remix, would perhaps be even better without "Sector7" parts and a bit shortened - forget it; well done!

Outstanding!
I always love the vocals in One Winged Angel, but I never like the rest of it. This solves this problem perfectly!! I can't think of a single change that would make this better then it already is. Very nicely done!

"One winged angel" in itself was a real masterpiece and milestone for not only Nobuo Uematsu but for video games and even games in general.Nothing was more amazing then getting into a face to face fight with Sephiroth with the beaming Live vocals of an assembled choir.Top notch and this remix is just that as well.TOP NOTCH...vocal extracting from the original mix jus really added to the remix and everything done to it didnt ruin nor kill da mood at all.I love this mix and give it a good DMD rating.Keep it up.

Awesomeness and awesomosity...

As far as FF soundtracks go, Seven's didn't really strike me as the best by a long shot, but it does have a few really good tracks... One Winged Angel is one of those, and probably the best of 'em. Nice to see it get some well deserved and EXCELLENT coverage. =)

I'm kind of... eh... I wouldn't mind the remix having the same voices and many other things if the remix had been good. For me though the entire first 3 and a half minutes the mix was boring and hard for me to listen to.
The mix was hardly epic, powerful, thrilling or anything really... it was just there. At some parts in the first minute it felt like I was watching latin porn heh..

03-13-2004, 09:42 PM
I'm in agreement with Kodeir` up there. Yes the vocals are an interesting take on a remix by removing them and adding the orginal tracks but, the tone of the orginal vocals are so bombastic and epic that putting them with the new track just really... eh. I don't get any epic feel from the piece anymore, and for the most part am just bored with whats going on. The slow section was interesting, and I do like some of the new themes but they just don't mesh well with the tone of the vocals

Hmm... When this song first started playing, I reeeally wasn't too sure about it, but by the end of the song, I just put it on "loop" and left it there. :D VERY well done. My original skepticism was, for once, completely errant. I give it two thumbs up.

03-15-2004, 08:02 AM
I acctually liked this song. It must have taken some serious work to bring out those "lyrics" or whatever. But, I get the feeling this is Sephiroth lite. Just doesn't push down on you like the real song. Of course, the quality is much better than da MIDI, so I'd rather listen to this, but if there was a remix more like the original "god o death" song, I think I'd rather listen to that. Still, great tune.

05-15-2004, 02:41 AM
This I love! It has such a unique sound for OWA (which I would like to save is probably my most favorite video game song EVA!)

But the sounds seem to mix between the original choir sound, dance, a sci-fi sound, and something Arabic (i think? :?: ). And then when it starts to have a calm, sad theme starting at 2:10 when the Sector 7 theme becomes alot more clear (to me, anyway). Plus you got the lyrics out so clearly! It's great! ^_^ On top of that, both songs were mixed together so well that they almost sound as if they are one and the same! ^_^ (that's what i think, anyway). ^^

This was an extremely beautiful remix, in my opinion, and I find it a shame that some people don't enjoy it. I can already tell my dad's gonna kill me for playing this day in and day out. ^^; ('specially considering I'm on the tenth repeat now).

Regardless of what some of the other reviews say, I think you should be very proud of your work on this, because it was excellent! Great job! ^_^

this is an excellent mix of a great piece. i'd been listening to the original for so long, i was getting tired of it, but i still loved it and wanted to keep listening to it, so finding this was wonderful. i even used it as music for my fashion show presentation- perfect beat, recognizable melody, and it fit my theme of games perfectly. people were coming up to me afterwards saying "where did you find that incredible music? can you burn me a copy?" and stuff like that, so i just wrote down the link for them. keep up the good work, trenthian- you've got a lot of new eager fans!

Wow. I love it. The original is good, but this is so much better. It doesn't quite match the orchestral version of it, which is by and by far musical perfection. However, this song has officially got me hooked on game remixes. I'm going to go out and give it a 9.5/10, but not if you are looking for good techno or trance--this gets the score for just being damn good.

... I had no idea that this remix was of Seph's Choir............. I generally tended to think that was incredibly creepy, since they were singing inchoherent gibberish............... This song scares me, though at the same time, I'm impressed. But... Oh yeah! Sephiroth DID hae one wing in his 'Safer' form, hence 'one winged angel....'..........However, I don't think I'll listen to this much, as it sounds really demonic with the choir and it'd give me chills if I listened to it more than once......

Simply a great remix. It's one of those that even when it's over, you can hear it again immediately and not get bored of it. Even though the music itself is amazing, it's the vocals that really made the piece for me. Definitely worth checking out.

Hmm... In my opinion, the original song is more epic than this...

Reasons: It is too techno-based piece than the orginal, and it is not as disturbing as the original piece (disturbing in a way, that you have a odd feeling through the song. Like you would be trapped, without any hope of escape.)

...But it is a good piece, but i do not favor it.

Gewd grief. Judges will poke at anything. Loreena McKinnet's entire plethora of songs would fall apart without the words and voice. So these are digital. Still nice, and expertly melded into the tune itself. Booyah. The background wasn't made to compliment the background, it was made to compliment the voices!

This is the first song I've almost laughed listening to in a while. Don't get me wrong there's nothing bad about it but... I dunno it's just amusing to me what you've done with it. Keeping the atmosphere, tune, words and everything else relatively intact while giving it almost a completely different underlying feel. Do-da-mambo!

I did much enjoy the oboe and the small 'transition' at about the 2:00 mark. That delightful thirty seconds made the song. Actually most thirty second segments after that were wonderful variations too. How you fluidly changed the way stuff sounded precisely every thirty seconds, hell, changed it at all, creates a wonderful tapestry of sound collectively.

A+ in my book. How DARE you try to chase me away from the FF7 section without makin' me listen to your stuff. *cough* :) Great work here, call up Square and demand a job. ^_~

I love this song, a very battle-like theme. I don't think the song would hold its shit together without the singing, but it doesn't matter, it has singing and that can't be changed.

::Trip:: "OW! What the f...oh...what's this? Hey! This is pretty good!" Yup...that's how it all happened...Actually, I came across this remix through Newgrounds.com. The flash animation "About Random Battles" gave me a glympse into this remixes soul. And after hearing that, I needed more. So, like a succubus...or incubus because I'm male...I found my prey and began to feast relentlessly on it's musical spirit. Not being sedated, I kept going back for more. Congratulations...I can't get enough of this remix...It just keeps charming me in to consume it through my ears... If this remix was chocolate cake, I would be fat...And I would say "screw weight watchers!"

While I find this to be an interesting remix, and quite skillfully made, it's almost as if someone took a song that was meant to be epic and sound dengerous, and make a dance song out of it.

Now, One WInged Angel and Techno are great, but while I didn't find Final Fantasy VII as mentally stimulating (visually, of course) as the previous Final Fantasy games, I have to admit that, aside from Kefka, and maybe not even him, Sephiroth is quite evil. Delusional and confused, but evil-y so...

That being said, I also have to say that the original One Winged Angel is one of my favorite songs. I love the looks I get when playing it in my car. People really do look scared. However, I feel as if I'm commiting blasphemy by even listening to this remix. As I said, it's quite skillfully made, but I cannot enjoy it. I like the original way to much.

Also, to be honest, I was glad that remixes of this song, for me at least, have been few and far between. Such is my commitment to the original.

Do keep up the good work, it seems like many many people foudn this to be a good remix.

Also, a side note for Diabolical Dr.Eccles, it is true that the literal translation from Japanese (dispite that it is Latin) to English doesn't make much sense, but, as many people no doubt know, that is true in very many songs that originate in Japan and make their way to the States, or any other place that is not, in fact, Japan. However, with a bit of word play, you can determine what is meant by the lyrics. As I said, this is just a side note.

I will give this remix a 7 out of 10. Even though I didn't not find it to be compatable with my personal tastes, does not mean that it is a poor remix. As I have said, it is quite skillfully made. My own prejudice, however, keeps me from really enjoying it.

This is...different. I always thought that "a one-winged angel" was OK, but whatīs this? A funked up version with some sort of asian drums and some serious beats together with electric bass at the end. It gets actually real good at 3:48 when itīs ready to make a great final showdown. Somehow I like it, good thing that you didnīt remove the choir in the back, thatīs what making this song special. Interesting job Trenthian.

By the way, isnīt this the music to "legendaryfrogs" minigame in "FF7-Random Battles"?

Another favorite of mine on this site. To this date, you are the only person I have found who attempted to remix "One-Winged Angel" and pull it off with a spectacular performance! I'm a big fan of FF7 and dedicate myself to finding any sort of One-Winged Angel themes I can find.

This song is a welcome swap from the super-serious end-of-the-world uberscary origional.

It actually makes One-Winged Angel somthing you want to dance to. ^_^

I really love this ReMix! The lyrics from the original retain their coolness, even with the altered pacing and timing. The new sounds give the song that 80's feel, but the clap makes it sound more ancient -- in a good way! Plus, with the fast beat and the pausing at key places, this has become my favorite song, period. 8)

Also, for my WRT 102 class in college, we were assigned to explicate (review and research) our favorite songs in an essay. Guess which song I explicated? This one. And, despite a couple of marks for incorrect word choice, I got a 100% on it. And my instructor is entirely ignorant of Video Game Music. :D That shows you how good the song is!

Yay! My very first post. XD

Just me personally; I hated it.

It is hardly a tribute to the original One Winged Angel. I'll be honest, I hate this sort of stuff (rock, techno) but it had some really bad parts.

The think I hated most was at about 3:06, the bongo drums were a poor choice.

Sorry for reviving a fairly old review, but I had to say that this is my favourite remix on the site. :D An excellent remix of an already great piece. The vocals are done well, and I especially like the tune at 4:30.

Personally, I think it's cool! Once again, you've got that perfect mix of that haunting chant in Latin with a beat. It may be just plain strange to some of you, but to take a musical leap like that deserves priase and appreciation. Good work, Trenthian.

Quite honestly, it's my favorite remix on the site so far. Not to say that there aren't other good mixes, by any means! Just that it's been stuck in my head for a little over a month now, and I'm still not tired of it! Not many songs receive that kind of praise from me.

Keep up the awesomeness, and I'd love to hear another OWA remix from you, Trenthian!

And by the way, Trenthian...yours is the first remix I've reviewed. It's one of the first to be worth it!

Ah, boy do I remember this. This mix was the shiz for me back in the day that it was still just a WIP. I remember thinking that if the judges voted NO for it, that I would leave OCR :). The choir from the source is a really cool idea. It almost makes this a mashup in a since, but your ideas are all over the place. The orchestral samples are a little better here than your first mix. The drums are great! The percussion adds sooo much to this mix! Like your first mix, there is a little over compression/clipping that I hear when things get especially dense. Once again, the arrangement is really where this shines. Trenthian's attention to dynamics is a shining example to us all! It's how you make a 5 minute track not feel like 5 minutes. Phenomenal!

to be honest, i was pretty underwhelmed for the first half of the mix. Once there was some vocal slicing and such, and more than just the in-game vocals, + drums, I felt a little better about it. Really, I think the first minute or two should have been chopped off, and things taken from there. Decent, but not awesome.
