Now that's pure funky. A lot of the anime duing the 80s and 90s used a lot of music styles like this. It wasn't until recently that anime went to more j-pop style openings.
And I must agree, it does get annoying

Smile Bomb and Homework ga Owarinai, the first opening and closing for Yu YU Hakusho.I normally hate japanesee female vocals, but I like these songs. For some reason I like older music from japan, I think it's because their women sing too high pitched now.

It's sadden me. I was watching a few old anime shows and a lot of them uses orchestras, jazz bands, and big bnads. Now they have this whole J-Pop shit, one of the many leading factors on why I hate anime.

how are the pillows generic jpop? I think the FLCL soundtrack is great, it's very unique to most anime.
SnowStorm I have some anime you can watch where I think you would like the music:
Haibane Renmei
Hellsing [TV version]
Azumanga Daioh
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
Also, most of the Gundam series have great music, as well as Macross [the "other" big robot franchise :D], though Macross actually centers the plot around pop music, which makes for an interesting watch. Minmay, a character in the anime, actually makes the enemy aliens go crazy with her music, or other types of human culture. Some of the characters get captured and they start making out with each other to escape XD
Here is a movie summary [if you don't mind spoilers]

Macross Frontier has some good stuff by the way of May'n and Megumi Nakajima, who play the singing voices of Sheryl and Ranka respectively.
Can't go wrong with Koh Otani who composed the stuff for Haibane Renmei as well as Shadow of The Collosus and Ico.
Hitoshi Sakamoto did the soundtrack for Romeo x Juliet, which sounds very much like his work on FFXII, FFT, and Vagrant Story.
Also fuck yes Hellsing.

Oh, you know some people...instead of asserting that they like a certain kind music, and that they think it's good, they have to tear down all the other kinds of music.
As for myself, I think both the Lupin III soundtrack and FLCL soundtrack kick butt. As well as many others! Yay for different tastes in music!

09-19-2008, 04:41 AM
actually the only soundtrack I can think of that is similar to FLCL's is Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad and honestly I hated that music - you'd think for an anime about a manga about a guy with an amazing voice you'd think they'd try to get... you know... a guy with a decent singing voice. Yet the dude totally can't sing and they force him to do all this engrish :P

God forbid that the Japanese use music that is popular in Japan for their shows. There's nothing wrong with the music in anime; and I have seen quite a bit of classical and jazz in the anime I've watched.

Maybe when I'm watching anime it's entirely the wrong kind, but I don't know any anime that is completely full of JPop, and what little Jpop I have heard in anime I have found enjoyable anyway, which says a lot cause I generally hate pop music.

Aye, this thread is going to boil down into two camps. Those who've seen many genres of anime and their related music across the decades with many examples of good music, and those who only saw a few popular shows and conclude that all anime is crappy pop. I likewise know someone who thinks all anime looks exactly like one each other.
There's no reason to hate on pop anways. Quality of songs should precede bias against genre.

J-pop tends to be actual POP with a lot of positive flair and more of a focus on variety and smooth sounding lyrics and musical themes. While American pop is mostly about having an attitude, girls looking like whores and guys looking like gangster wannabes and not giving a damn about the musical part for the most part. Also, western pop tends to have way too much faux attitude. You could just taste the typical American pretentiousness of most American pop nowadays. I don't blame anyone for preferring J-pop more simply out of philosophy.

Hmm, yeah I guess that's true jpop is more sincere I guess. I've never really been able to put my finger on why I like the jpop that show's up in anime.
I know there are some styles of it that I have found unappealing but that's just cause the stylistic sound of it is well not appealing to my musical taste.
Also I feel like I'm bound to post something in this thread now just cause people keep doing it, cause bandwagons are fun, or something. :P

Wow, you must be a huge idiot to criticize the FLCL OST for being bland. The Pillows are hands down one of the best japanese rock bands in a sea of visual kei fail, and the music really adds to the amazing atmosphere of the series.

Boo to closed-minded opinions, but I'll take this moment to say I support the original love for Yuji Ohno's Lupin soundtrack. Been a fan of Ohno's work since Mighty Orbots. And if I ever get around to transcribing a sequence of the 1980 Lupin theme, OverCoat will get his remix soon after that.

You just did not say Aria is a guilty pleasure... The music is also very unique as well. Very... Okinawan + Italian. Strange mix but it works so well.
And to top it off, they sing in Esperanto (!).
Now, while I agree, Lupin III's music was the best music until Cowboy Bebop hit the scene, cheesy j-pop is fun once in a while.

She also "borrows" quite a bit, ex. "On the Run" from cowboy bebop is basically "on the run" from Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon, though she changes the song up enough so it's legally a different song :D - people have cited, like... dozens of different examples, but that's the one I know.

You guys come in here with a limp in your step and all your classical anime knowledge. . . But FAIL to mention "My Omelette" !!!
This song exists on a completely new tier of "anime opening themes respect" because it's pop music and "real" music at the same time. Paying tribute to everyone's favorite omelette-destroying classical composer Beethoven while simultaneously making omelettes sound appealing to the younger generation. There's hardly a masterpiece that makes as daring a mix of ingredients as this one.
Kindgom Hearts 2 spoilers, I think.
