View Full Version : Do you have a NES/Atari/SNES/Sega/N64...

What with readily available emulators and Virtual Console, I am curious to know how many people out there still use the previous generation consoles.

I am fortunate enough to have a SNES and N64 with a small library of games for each and I feel like there's something special about playing old school style. Maybe it's just nostalgia.

Also, especially in the case of the N64, I can't bring myself to play those games using the Wii retro controller. No C-buttons? Zounds! (though I do love the Wiimote for NES games)

Now, if only I could get my hands on a copy of Pilotwings 64...

I've got an N64 that I bust out every once in a while with the friends. Probably got 30+ games for it, including Pilotwings. :) Big games for us are Goldeneye, Mario Kart, and Beetle Adventure Racing.

Strangely, I don't own Ocarina of Time, and have never played it.

N64, Genesis, NES, SNES and Dreamcast are still there. Atari is a bit too old and it's stored away probably forever.

I'm a bit torn when I see a game put up online because it is convenient, but I'd rather actually buy something that is rare to get a hold of or are re-made or have new features like Dr Mario, Bionic Commando:Rearmed, MM9, etc.

I might still buy SMRPG because the SNES controller, unexpectedly totally destroys my hand when using it. The lack of a grip physically hurts.

Ah, Goldeneye. Hours and hours of hilarious Soviet fun.

Tell you what, I'll trade your Mario Kart for my Ocarina of Time.

...What? No deal?! Nuts.

But I do have my NES, Super NES, and N64. They're all hooked up at all times. I've never put them away. I still play them from time to time, be it Mega Man 4 or 2, Kirby Super Star or Adventure or 64, or any of the classic Mario games. I think it takes away from the magic to play remakes or emulators anyway.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that I play Ocarina of Time once a year (last year only three hearts :) just cause its that good

I've actually seen in stores like best buy or circuit city that sell special decals/covering that give that grip you prefer for the classic controllers. What I find funny is that the original snes controllers had that weird semi rough texture to it where as the classic are smooth...

As for the old systems that still work...

N64, Sege Genesis, NES, SNES and even the old fat gameboy model (transparent shell version). However some of the games either don't work any more or just malfunction; a majority of my nes library still works, (gold zelda 1 cartridge included)...

I see you're a man after my own (three) hearts. I tried that in Majora's Mask and got crushed.

Have you ever attempted Mario 1 with your toes? I think I've made it to 1-3 before.

The only ones I still regularly use are my Saturn and PS1, and there aren't any decent emulators for the former anyhow. The NES, SNES, Genesis, and Sega CD (and 32X) that I grew up playing are all still working, but I left those at my mother's place when I moved to DC years ago.

Basically, I didn't bother bringing anything that I could just emulate. Although now that I'm having trouble getting Gens+ to recognize my CD drive in Vista (didn't have that problem in XP), I might end up retrieving my Sega CD or finding a CDX on eBay.

Also... especially for action games, playing it on the actual console works out much better. The controls always feel a little off on emulators. I can't do any of the tricks I used to do on Super Mario World or Mariokart, for instance.

A less insane handicap (although perhaps not as fun) is to play the entire game holding down the right button. You can still run/walk and jump, but you can't turn back. I forget how far I can get there before it seems impossible. KF

I'm jealous of my brother due to he kept the Super Nintendo and he has a NES. I'm thinking of stealing them when I go to his house. We did had a SEGA CD but it got damaged.

I find it pretty ironic that both the classic controller for the Wii and SNES controllers have the same problem. NO GRIP. I'd gladly play Nintendo games on a 360 controller + the PS3 direction pad. Just bastardize the company names for the sake of not hurting to play a game. I'd probably buy a grip-addon eventually.

How is Atari a joke? Sure, by today's standards it was, but it was basically the only way to go for gaming newborns back then. I guess Commodore was there, but that system died quick.

I've still got my N64, an old genesis, and a PS1. Never touch the last one, given that all of the games are playable on a PS2, and the genesis pretty much stays in the closet, given it's age, but the 64 I still get a kick out of, because nothing beats Goldeneye and Mario 64 for hours of awesome replayablity.

Commodore only worked when it wanted to (childhood friend had one), the Atari 2600 though was awesome and with its simple slid in cartridge with the switch flipping. No damn keyboard needed for just the simplest of games. :)!!

Though it was not long before I had put away the 2600 for the NES when it came out. Got the system which had included SMB as well as duck hunt in one cartridge then Zelda..

Anybody here who had the NES and the gun ever noticed weird things about the gun? A coworker of mine who also grew up with the NES always told me his gun would always shoot off in a pattern in duckhunt. I never noticed a pattern and I think only once I had ever make a perfect score on the duck section. fucking clay pigeons were bullet proof I tell ya...

A lot of people got started on the NES, but my first solid generation of gaming in like my first 4 years of life was on the Atari. I never knew how inferior the Atari version of Pacman was too. It at least had the gist of the ancient titles like Frogger and Pitfall. Even if they're too horribly simple for today's standards. And I seriously truly discovered Metroid 20 years later. Zelda, I beat all its versions in emulation 10 years ago. And there's that weird slate of PC gaming which were very arcade-y for some reason. And Duke Nukem too, and not in its whore-y state.

Only duke nukem I've ever played was DN3d. I still play it to this day except now I can't go back to the original sound track ever since I installed the high quality redone sound track for it... Lots of Quake matches too later on...

I've got a Super Nintendo and a model 2 Sega Genesis hooked up right alongside my GameCube, PS2 and 360. I've also got an N64 in my closet, but I haven't had the urge to play it (or beat the 4 remaining unfinished games) for a long time.

I'm debating on whether I should get a NES or one of the FC Twin systems to play my NES games.

Haa haa, what? I thought I was the only person to ever play that game. I used to love multiplayer, and doing that little brake-turn-thing just off of a ramp made it impossible for anyone to hit you.

I decided to donate my N64 and Gamecube, since I hardly play consoles anymore. I do, however, have most of my portables still.

Genesis, Dreamcast, PS1, PS2, PS3, Xbox, N64, VirtualBoy, Gamecube, Wii, GameBoy Pocket, GameBoy Color, DS Lite, PSP (2000 model)

They're all hooked up EXCEPT for the PS1, and old GameBoys don't have batteries. The VirtualBoy has a AC adapter in the wall, and it's good to go. They're all in remarkable condition considering I've had some of them since I was a child... I'm surprised I was so concerned about their well-being even when I was little. :) Everything works just like it did years and years ago.

Future plans are to purchase a Sega Saturn, an NES, an SNES, and possibly a SegaCD just to have it.

I was thinking about playing through the old Pokemon games (you know when the true number of the damned things existed: 151). I've just been feeling nostalgic...

I'm still buying genesis games from thrift stores every now and then - recently picked up Sonic Spinball, 688 Attack Sub, Sub-Terrania, Road Rash II, Revenge of Shinobi etc

I also have a few japanese megadrive games that fortunately can be loaded via my Game Genie :)

Also people steal that internal memory thing all the time :[? Bunch of dicks I say. They also pocket the cartridges off of the old turntables...

I still have a working TI-99a that I take out and play sometimes(And it's tape storage device for Tunnels of Doom). Then I also have a Master System I play now and then though I only have Safari Hunt and Super Hang On!(built into the system memory), Shanghai, and Shinobi. NES still works, SNES still works, Genesis still works(after I messed around with its parts a few times), N64 still works, GCN still work. I take em out and exercise each one every now and then.

Man... what's with the Atari hate? I still have my Atari XE Game System (XEGS), and I play it pretty regularly each month. Games like Rescue on Fractalus, Mario Bros., Lode Runner, Desert Falcon and Crossbow are still fun to take out and play for a while. Couple that with being able to play almost all of the Atari 400/800 game library, and it's a great old system with a lot of games (original and arcade) to play.

That was an expansion slot used to plug in the Expansion Pak which boosted the N64's RAM to 8MB. I believe the original cartridge was just a dummy cart, though if it was removed the system would not play.

I have a NES, SNES, N64, Gamecube, Sega CDX, Sega Saturn, Dreamcast, Xbox, Xbox 360, PS2, GBA SP, DS Lite and Neo Geo Pocket Color Pro. Most of the systems are hooked up and I still play them occasionally. There is just something about playing a game on it's original system that is just so much fun, and it brings back so many memories. A lot of people were raising the issue of having to rebuy all of their old games if they wanted to play them on the Wii, but that was never a problem with me because I still own most of my old games. I mean I never even use Slot 2 on my DS, when I want to play a Gameboy game I just pop it in my GBA SP instead. I've never liked PC emulators because it feels silly playing games on a keyboard, and the Wii Virtual Console is much better. The VC balances it out because you don't have to blow on carts or do any other tactics to try and get games to work, that and it has that instant save feature.

I'm still wondering why Nintendo didn't just release little adapters so you can plug old controllers into the Wii remote... probably beacuse they wanted to push their new hardware, but still.

It's indeed for memory. Bought one myself when the n64 was still warm on the market. Plugged it in and there were some noticable differences between having it and not having it. Quake II for the N64 played faster and looked better, Castlevania 64:LoD had less jaggies and played smoother. Starcraft 64 was much smoother as well. (Big fan of the games I bought the gimped n64 version of starcraft)

The original cartridge inside the slot was black while the memory expansion had a red cover to it.

The Genesis and N64 are still around, though the latter sees far more use than the former... which is still very little (mostly thanks to the Wii). Brick-Boy, GBC and GBA SP are in hiding in my room someplace. SNES... if I think about it I get mad, so we'll just say it's gone.

I actually e-mailed NOA a few years ago to ask if they would consider releasing a N64 controller adapter or similarly shaped retro controller for the Wii. They responded by politely stating that they did not have such a product in the works. Too bad. Ocarina of Time on GC controllers (playing the Master Quest) was no fun with the C-stick. I imagine it's similar on the Wii-retro controller.

I've never liked PC emulators because it feels silly playing games on a keyboard, and the Wii Virtual Console is much better.

Using a controller takes away most of that feeling (I only play emulated games using one; I can't get used to a keyboard anymore). Plus, you can re-map button functions pretty easily.

Even then, you'd probably notice a little lag or something funny about the way it controls. Like I said before, it's really noticeable in action games and platformers. It's still great, but there is definitely a little something missing.

Since most of what I play are RPGs, this insufficiency doesn't bother me much. KF

No, YOU'RE a joke. not enough explosions for you?

I got my start on my mom and dad's NES which is 5 years older than I am when I was but 2 years old. I moved on up to a SNES, a couple Gameboys, N64, Dreamcast, GBA, Gamecube, PS2, DS, Atari 2600, Action Max, Genesis (two, actually. New one and old one), Xbox 360, Commodore 64, Atari 5200... and I think that's it. My parents made me choose between the SNES and Genesis back in the day and naturally I took the SNES. I wanted to keep all my old systems even when my friends told me to sell them (this is around 96-97) because they were useless and obsolete... I sure showed them. My parents had the Action Max and all three of its "games" are somewhere in the house. I bought my Genesis for $5 in 2005. The atari 2600 was at my grandparents' house and no one knew where it came from. Nothing beats a free atari! My uncle gave me his Atari 5200 and old-model genesis earlier this year.

My best find had to be Earthbound on Ebay for $7 in 2003. It only came with the guide (no box) but I'm quite pleased. I didn't know it was really expensive until more recently.

I've never liked PC emulators because it feels silly playing games on a keyboard, and the Wii Virtual Console is much better. The VC balances it out because you don't have to blow on carts or do any other tactics to try and get games to work, that and it has that instant save feature.

AAAH TELEBE KUN! I so want one of those.

I still have my MegaDrive with about 40 games.
A Snes,PS1 ,Yellow Brick Gameboy
Dreamcast,PS2,Wii,Xbox360 are always hooked upto the TV. Played very often.
Megadrive often comes out when i need to play Thunder Force 4 or Some Gunstar Heroes.Cant wait until i move from this tiny room.
Ill just leave em all hooked up around the TV like i did at home.

HA! My parents never got me a video game system. I ended up buying my own when I eventually got money. That was back at the end of the playstation era though.

In order I got them:

Turbografix 16 [Grew up with this system. Bonk is my hero.]
Sega Genesis [Shortly thereafter]
Gameboy [Tetris, LoZ: Link's Awakening, and Mario 2 owned me]
Atari something or other briefly [Spiderman, disappeared.]
PlayStation [CD motor burnt out, currently in pieces.]
NES [Stored with a game compressed, the prongs can't be fixed anymore. Currently in pieces]
Gameboy Color [My portable for 10 years]
PlayStation2 [The Fatty]
XBox [Only use it for Halo and... well, that's all.]
Gamecube [Melee machine]
Wii [brother's, actually, but I'm too cheap to get anything new yet]
DS [My main system now]

The oldest system I have is the N64, and I prefer to emulate that anyways, considering I can barely get it to run.:|

I am ROUGH on my gaming consoles, it would seem, or I just have terrible luck with hardware.

Had an Atari 2600. It broke, tossed it, tossed the games too.
Had an NES. It kind of broke (the cartridge port wore out), tossed it, gave away the games. I had a zapper, too.
Have an SNES. Can't find the AC adapter for it, it's gotta be somewhere in storage. Still have all my cartridges.
Have a Genesis, original model. Its video out is so busted you'll spend more time jiggling around the video plug than playing the game, and the slightest bump freezes the game. Fun. Still have all my cartridges.
Had a Sega CD. It broke (a few months after I bought it. It totally scratched up any CDs I played in it as well), tossed it. Tossed the games, too. I only had Sonic CD and Sewer Shark anyway.
Have an N64. IT WORKS PERFRECTLY. Got the RAM upgrade too! Only two working controllers, though (First party. The third party ones broke). Got rumble paks and the memory cards that go in the controllers too. I can only find about half the games I bought for it though. Glad to have Starfox 64, Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, Ocarina of Time, F-Zero X, and a few others, but I can't find my damn copy of Diddy Kong Racing!
Have a gamecube. It's tricked out. Modchipped with Qoob Pro, case modded to fit full size discs, got the broadband adapter, 3 wavebirds, and 2 wired controllers. Tons of games. TONS.
Have a wii. Modchipped with yaosm, and the modchip is externally mounted using an RS-232 port's mounting bracket, so it can be unplugged if needed. Lots of stuff (2 classics, 4 wiimotes, 3 nunchuks, lan adapter, component cable) and a dozen or so games for it.
Have a DS lite. Modded with M3 Lite. I was way late to the portable gaming party.

I'm preordering Pandora (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pandora_(console)) when it's available for preorder Tuesday

NO SONY. NO MICROSOFT.

...what the hell? There's a fighting game of that?

Ohh yeah, and it's awesome. It never came out in the United States so a PC emulator is about the only sound way you can play it these days. I'd highly recommend you check it out.

AAAH TELEBE KUN! I so want one of those.

Haha, what, you mean the Canti figurine from FLCL? I found that marked down three times at Suncoast a few years ago, but of course all of the ones in my neck of the woods had to go out of business. They had some cool merchandise.

Dayum, that looks pretty cool. Why haven't I heard about this?

I once had an NES, but it got tossed out. Not sure if it still worked when we got rid of it. Thankfully I still have my SNES. Never had any Sega system, or anything non-Nintendo for that matter until the PS2.

I wasn't one of the poor fools waiting for Super Mario RPG on VC because I have that shit on a cartridge, BOXED on my shelf. Not a pretty box, but that and DKC3 are the only 2 boxed SNES games I own.

Looking over at my desk right now, I have, hooked up and ready to play:

NES
SNES
N64
Wii
PS2
PS3

The gamecube is unhooked and sitting behind me in my closet, because the Wii plays those. Same with the PS1. I kept the PS2 because it's so damn hard to find a PS3 that plays PS2 games on the market and I have a suspicion they'll remove that ability via firmware update eventually anyways.

I have:

22 NES games
12 SNES games (just bought Secret of Mana 3 weeks ago)
18 Genesis Games
23 N64 games
30 Gamecube games
Fuckton of PS1 games
19 PS2 games

I don't include Wii and PS3 games because they aren't retro. But yeah, I love my old systems. Ironically, the only systems I won't leave for my bros when I move out are the SNES and the N64.

NES
SNES
N64
Game Cube
Wii
Gameboy Pocket
GBA SP
Gamboy DS
Sega Genesis x2 w/ 32x and Sega Master System adapter
Saturn
Dreamcast x2
Xbox
PS2
Atari 2600

The funny thing is that most of these systems were acquired within the past 4 years. I didn't have the time or money for a long time to buy gaming consoles. Now it's kind of a hobby collecting them and I'm pretty good at finding bargains. It's amazing what you can find on craigslist sometimes.

I have one of these:

http://www.retrousb.com/index.php?productID=116

And an NES controller of course.
It's really responsive, I was happy about my purchase.

Nice.... It's a testament to Nintendo, too, that my NES controllers still work after 20 years.

I have something similar for PS1 controllers (including DDR pads). I still prefer the regular gamepad I have, though--mostly since it's modeled off of the dual-shock PS1/PS2 controllers. KF

I stll have my Sega Genesis, NES Second Generation Model PS1 original, and i play them all, from time to time.

I cant get enough of oldschool games xD.

Also, I was at a gameshop the other day, they had a Copy of Megaman X-3. a limited number of them were released in america, they go for $150, I dont think i could bring myself to buy it.. and it was for the SNES, and the rarest and most expensive game in america, what a game to have in your collection, eh?

I have most of the old gaming systems, and multiple regions of some, but the only one I have hooked up to play at a moment's notice is my top-loading Famicom. Lots of good games too. Most of the other systems are either ready to be hooked up and played at any time, or back in the states. My gaming set up in my room is not really good for having lots of systems hooked up at the same time, but when I get a house one day I am definitely setting up a gaming room with all of my systems hooked up and a huge library of games. I use emulation for conveneince but nothing beats playing on the original system! The only systems I am lacking really are a good Turbographix setup (I'd like to get a Duo system with the CD system built in) and a Neo-Geo with games. Just a matter of time really.

KF

i remember back in the day there used to be a group of kids that played the nes d-pad upside down and they held it like a keyboard.

I'm trying to get my girlfriend into the type of video games I play.

So I booted of Secret of Mana on my SNES. Then the next day it came out on VC.

She says she's really confused but she's having fun playing it. We'll get there haha.

In my closet I store the: Game Boy, Super Game Boy, SNES, N64, PSX, Sega Genesis, Sega Saturn

In my room I have hooked up: Playstation 2, Gamecube, Sega Dreamcast, Nintendo DS

I gave my Dad his Atari 2600 back and gave him my NES and Gamegear so my siblings could play it. Wish I hadn't of given him the NES now, you always regret giving any game/console away. Think carefully before you ever do it!!

I really don't collect games or systems the way I used to - I had a running inventory at some point but about 3 years ago I stopped keeping track - it was too much of a pain... Off the top of my head though my system list is as follows:

Atari 2600
Atari Jaguar
Nintendo NES (Gen 1 and 2)
Super NES (Gen 1 and 2)
Sega Genesis (Gen 1, 2, and 3)
Sega CD
TG-16
Neo Geo
Atari Jaguar
Panasonic 3DO
Sega Saturn
Sega Dreamcast (1 Jap, 1 US)
Nintendo 64 (Original Gray, Limited GOLD version)
Nintendo Gamecube
Nintendo Wii
PS1 (Gen 1 and 2)
PS2 (Gen 1 and 2)
PS3 (60GB)
Xbox (original and Halo editions)
Xbox 360

On the handheld side:

Game Boy (yes, still works)
Game Boy Pocket
Game Boy Color
Game Boy Advance
Game Boy Micro (original and Limited ed. model)
Game Boy Advance SP (Gen 1 and 2)
Nintendo DS (old and Lite versions)
Virtual Boy
Game Gear
Sega Nomad
Atari Lynx
Neo Geo Pocket Color (2 flavors)
PSP

At last count a few years back my game list was over the 1300 mark, since then it's probably 150 more or so...It may look impressive, but I'm at the point of my life where I'm thinking "shit, i wish I just saved my money." I've found that as you get older, the collection is less and less appealing and that you wish that all the crap wasn't there collecting dust.

Game collections are cool, but at this point I'd rather just have everything on virtual console. I don't have the energy to sell my stuff, and I don't think I'd get particularly much for it, so basically it's useless for most purposes, but hey, what can ya do?

Wow, it's like a wikipedia listing of videogame history. I think you would stand a much better shot of selling it all together to a collector rather than in pieces (and save yourself the hassle, too). That'd be a fun picture to see; you have one?

Yeah, many people have NES, maybe Atari, but who here has an Intellivision II?

My 4 NES(s) gets no love

My Atari 7800 gets no love

My Intellivison II gets no love

Glad to see I'm not the only one who found that game to be a lot of fun, if completely brainless.

I have an Atari 2600, a Sega Genesis, an N64, a GCN, a PS2, a PS1, and a Wii. Also have a Game Gear, a GBC, a GBASP, a DS, and a PSP.

Kinda wish I had a Super Nintendo, but... that's what the VC is for.
