New Stuff:
Touch controls! (Class mode available too.)
New ending!

An online monster battling mode!?
I wish I could go forward in time a few days and buy this already.

Given the effort they put into even the GBA re-releases of FF games those new features are disspointing. I definitely won't bother with it given the price. Now if it was $20, then it might be a different story.

NNY didn't mention that there are two new dungeons as well. I'd find it hard to say that this doesn't top any of the GB FF remakes. FF IV, on the other hand, is more debatable. (FF III's remake added so little besides graphics that's it's not worth considering).

I geeked the hell out and ordered me a japanese copy. Don't judge me :)
So far, it is sooooo good.
Having to read the tiny font on the screen is annoying, but you get over it pretty quick.
The script change is okay. Nothing bad really. The only thing you I really had to get used to was the skill name changes.
The new dungeons are interesting, especially the last 3. The monster arena, not so much. I found it really boring and an addition they could have fleshed out a lot more. All you do is send a monster to an era to train (each era has a specific stat it gets increased), wait for it to come back, then enter a ff6 coliseum style arena where you win prizes if you win.

The last dungeon is very important to the cc line and so is the final boss.
Dungeon shows that dalton is responsible for the fall of guardia in CC

So good.

I really don't see why everyone is whining about the $40 price tag. All Squeenix DS games cost as much, and more than half of them are crap. I'd gladly pay $50 for this. Guaranteed quality.

You're thinking of the DS remakes, not the GBA versions. And I would say the GBA games top this in terms of offering a new experience since they got extra dungeons and new translations at least (some of those translations being pretty sorely needed). This is pretty much the same game we got in the PSX re-release but with only the new dungeons as additions (couldn't give to craps about this online mode), and that's not enough for me to pay $40 for a game I already own.

I preordered this back in August. This was the first game I played via a rom; I had heard about it, but didn't know (a) where to find a copy (2001-02) and (b) if it was as good as people said. I absolutely love Chrono Trigger. I have since bought the cartridge and the PS1 remake (which sucked hardcore due to the load times). I am looking forward to some portable Chrono Trigger action. Maybe triumphant sales of this re-make will get us Chrono Cross on DS or *gasp* Chrono Break?!?!? Yeah... I guess not.
There are three Castlevania's on DS alone. But only one Chrono Trigger. (And a PS1 sequel, and an SNES text adventure, but those are entirely different.)
I bet Order of Eccelsia has only one ending too! CTDS is only $5 more....
....someone buy it...

Thinking of both, actually, just didn't word it clearly. FF IV GBA had the extra dungeon (which was really easy except for Kain's floor); FF IV DS has augments and better graphics. Personally, I'd take more content over better graphics any day; if it wasn't for the augment system, I wouldn't be playing FF IV DS at all.

I think last time NNY was around, Rama still had his thug sig with the bling "$" necklace. (which I miss, BTW)
Look, I really like Chrono Trigger and all, but nobody other than Squeenix is charging $40 for a DS game. ESPECIALLY when you consider that it's essentially a port, not a new game. There's no way it took more resources/effort/money to create Chrono Trigger DS than it did to make most other new DS games.
I would buy it at $30, think it's a steal at $20, and would consider (but pass) at $35. $40 is too much for a DS game unless it's The World Ends With You.

I'd buy a "Squaresoft Classics" collection for $20 with all their SNES games on it, like Capcom or Konami would put out. People allow themselves to buy into the whole "It's worth any price" mystique surrounding stuff like Chrono Trigger way too much, as if these were some sort of sacred holy treasures that S-E keeps locked in a magically sealed vault rather than just a couple megs of data which they could have slapped onto a compilation disc at any time.

I really wish Chrono Break would come to be. Chrono Cross left more questions then answers. A very enjoyable game but, so many questions.
If any of you have not tried it, look up "Radical Dreamers". It was a Satellaview game, so you'd have to search for a translated rom.
Even more questions arise.

Spoilers about stuff that you see at the ending. Again, read at your own risk.
After doing more research into the series after getting the extra ending, I found out just how tragic this series is.
Dalton destroys Guardia with us only to assume that Crono and Marle got murdered since his final lines in CT were that he was going to get revenge. Magus finds Schala in the distortion, only to lose her again when Crono and crew lose *storyline wise, you win but you still lose* to the dream devourer. She then sends him away with him losing his memory, ultimately becoming guile.
Lucca still gets screwed either way.
Man, this game turned the chrono series into a sad series for me. I LOVE IT EVEN MORE NOW.

I bought it. Funny thing, I've never bought Chrono Trigger in any of its other iterations. First time I played it was when I borrowed it from a friend. Second time, was on (ahem) a SNES emulator. And then I played it on my brother's PS1.
Even on the emulator, it felt..not quite right, and the PS1 version load times were irritating to say the least. So for me, $40 for one of my all time favorite games is well worth it.
Now we just need to convince the powers that be to release a Mother trilogy on DS. I'd gladly pay $100 for that.

The only thing I could possibly have a problem with, is that I thought the sprites would be a little bigger. Everything seems smaller than I think it should. Maybe it's because I haven't played Chrono Trigger in years, but somehow, I remember everything being a lot bigger. I don't mean, like on a bigger screen, I mean as in the amount of screen space the character take up.

That's too bad. I know he didn't speak very formally in the Japanese version, but I always felt it worked with his character speaking that way and nobody else. It was as if he was overcompensating for feeling like he was unworthy of being a knight.

Pseudo-Latin? no.... It's called Old-English (layman term. Official term apparently being Early Modern English). It's an actual way of speaking and hence it is mocked/emulated in modern day. Latin? Where did that come from?

Do notice, I said part, good Sir. It was part of his personality, one of the first things you came to notice about him. Those you listed, also greatly encompass who Frog is and what makes him so likable.
Why would people have a problem with Frog speaking in Old English? It added to his character.
Because it wasn't Old English, it was a painfully inadequate attempt by someone who had probably read a single Shakespeare poem in his life. I'm really, really glad they did away with that distracting travesty of the language.

But the fact that it's a butchery of Old English is why it seemed to fit him perfectly. Despite totally having no faith in himself and not being nobility (and being a Frog to boot), he's trying to be this ultra-formal, strict-honor-code-following knight so he's speaking in thys and thous while everyone else is speaking normally.
That's an interesting take on the character, but one that wasn't in the original game.

Old English and Early Modern English are actually several centuries apart. If it were really Old English, you wouldn't be able to read it (unless you happened to know Old English and then high five to you I suppose) because it's so far removed from Modern English. And yeah, the Latin thing was completely off-base.
I usually call Early Modern English "Shakespearean English," even though Shakespeare's considered the transition to Modern English. Honestly, this entire post is just my being Mr. Pedantic Language Guy.
Anyway, as far as I remember, Frog just borrowed some pronoun forms and that was it. I enjoyed it at the time, what with being like eight years old and all, but I probably won't miss it when I play this new version. And play it I shall.
We can all agree that Frog's speech was nowhere near as bad the dialogue for every minor character in Chrono Cross.

"Grand" and "Leon" in the Japanese version creating the sword "Grandleon."

We opened it with courage and...! (This thread now a "random FFT dialogue!" thread.)
you know, i must own like 3 different copies of FFT but never bothered to play more than the first 2 missions or so. what is the translation like? and is the psp version any better?
Three different copies? To my knowledge there's only two versions of it released: the original PS1 and the PSP port. Unless you meant that you have three of the same disc for some reason...?
In any case, I thought the translation was awesome. It was campy as hell and probably not technically accurate, but that's why we loved it. The PSP version "fixes" the translation, but from what I hear it makes the game lose a lot of its charm. I haven't played the PSP version, though, so don't take my word for it.

I've never heard anyone pronounce it wrong really, but I'd love to hear someone call it "Masamewn."
I'll own up to calling it this the first time I read the text in the game. I'd never heard of the sword before, and I just figured that the characters who made it were indeed called "Masa" and "Mune [mewn]." I think I heard the correct pronunciation on an anime a few years later.

you should hang out with me sometime. I said it wrong, I also spoke Lucca "luka" and Marle "Marl", MasaMune "maza mew-n" but hey what are you going to when you're 12?
LOL i was and still am the same. Until i read this thread i didnt know i was saying masamune wrong. I have always been a HUGE fan of the game (my first battle screen RPG i played, way before FF) and i have met even bigger fans and we all said it the same, MasaMewn. Oh well.

The only alternate pronounciations I can think of would be "lu-sha" (soft "c", like "s" rather than like "k") and "mar-lay" (with "mar" and "le" as seperate syllables, rather than "marl" with a silent "e"). Of course, I've always pronounced it "Luka", "Marl", and "Masamewn", and probably will continue to do so.
On a semi-related note, I used to have an ongoing debate on the proper pronounciation of "chocobo". When the newer games with voice acting came out, I was finally vindicated. All those years, and I was right all along! Mwahahahaha! (It's "cho-ko-bo", not "chok-o-bo".)
The other big pronounciation argument I can remember is Raiden. Rye-den or Ray-den? I've heard it both ways, even in voice acting, so I don't even know if there is a right answer to that one.

It's "Rye-Den" like in the Metal Gear one. It's a real wording and name so you should say it like the way Japanese do. Ryu, it's understandable, since it's more like "R-You". Watching too many anime, I can't ever say "Masamwune" like many people do. I always say it correctly.

It's "rye-den," no matter how they may have said it in Mortal Kombat :P.
Man, I'm enjoying this game more this time around than the first time I had played it...I think I've had further exposure to the genre since then, so I can appreciate the battle system and whatnot that much more.
I call them "Luka" and "Marley." The other ways just sound retarded. And I don't care if they're supposed to be pronounced differently or not.

I have 2 copies of the PSone release -- one when it first came out (black label) and a greatest hits version. I also have the PSP release, but its still in the shrink wrap. lol.

I always figured Lucca was pretty straight forward as "Luka", technically with a little extra "k" sound to be "Luk" "ka".
Marle is "Marl" with the silent e. We had a thread about it a few months back. That's probably the weirdest to say of the bunch.
What about Ayla? I always I assumed it's "ay" as in day as opposed to "aye, captain."
I just did some research. Oddly enough, Lucca's English Wikipedia entry is deleted.
But, the Japanese one says it's ”ルッカ(Rukka),” so "Luka" would be the correct pronunciation.
Marle is ”マール(Maru),” So drop the u at the end, and you got Marl.
Won't stop me from calling her "Marley" though. Much cuter.

that red light of imminent battery death is one of those features i like in the NDS -- it lets you know you better find a save point. the psp just shuts off without so much as an excuse me.

ok, i was wrong then. the psp does at least say excuse me before it shuts off on you.
Though you have to admit that its hard to pay attention to one tiny green light, blinking or not, when its conveniently covered by your right thumb when you're holding the psp. (and no, i don't routinely push my home button to check my battery every now and then when i'm playing a game either.)
anyway, back to the subject at hand. i just got my bonus chrono trigger CD in the mail! yay. too bad only 2 songs though.

Yeah that happens a lot at GameStop (where I work). They almost always send us more copies of the preorder bonus than we have preorders for, so we end up with extras. Unless it's an epic release (Gears 2, WoW, etc.) we'll usually have extras, but the employee might easily forget about it. If you are buying new releases from GameStop, it never hurts to ask if they still have any preorder bonuses left.
I got a CD, for example, even though I haven't bought the game (...yet?). Let me tell you, the CD is awesome, but painfully short. It's like finding a great free sample of porn online. It's enough to get you to blow your load, but you know there's gotta be a much better and longer version of it somewhere...

Chrono Trigger
Upon further review, we've discovered that Chrono Trigger does not have a level that allows you to travel back to 1982 to throw a football over some mountains and win the state championship. You'll spend most of the game traveling through time, fighting evil bosses and trying to save the planet's future, probably by preventing Sarah Connor from giving birth to Marty McFly.
Wow. I knew working there made you crazy, but that's just funny.

Spoilers warning, not that it should be necessary, but apparently some people still haven't played this game. Shame on you, no more spoilers warning after this. There's a goddamn statute of limitations on this kind of thing.
Not having a quarter of the screen taken up by lots of menu stuff helps a lot. And the map screen is slightly useful if not interesting to see things you might miss first; like in Ozzie's Fortress, there's a secret tunnel. If you haven't played it before/a lot time, you might miss it and pass up a lot of very good items for Magus.
Also, if you do the first extra dungeon, you can get a lot of the higher power items earlier. Once Chrono dies, you can access the Lost Sanctum, which will give you loads of cash, lots of items, and plenty of experience. It will make the next few quests, like reviving Chrono and the side-quests, a lot easier.
As for the other new quest, you can only access it once you complete the game once, and go into New Game+. It doesn't sound too bad from what I've read.
Now, has anyone really tried the Arena yet?

Actually, you don't have to go into NG+ to access the Dimensional Vortex. Instead of starting NG+ you can just continue your save, the portals will still be there, and once you beat new ending you can save and then start your NG+.

As long as the statute of limitations on spoilers has passed, did anyone else think the Lost Sanctum was incredibly tedious? I lost track of how many times I went up and down that damn mountain. I actually started to use the FAQ towards the end because I was tired of going up thinking that was what I had to do next, only to find I missed a step. The Dimensional Vortex was very cool though and I even almost died on the first boss I fought there, which was refreshing for Chrono Trigger. :)

Giving each character their unique accent in CC wasn't actually done with direct translation (they used an algorithim to generate accents for each character), it probably wasn't as terrible as it could have been. Still, a lot of dialogue though!

The mountain was incredibly tedious. Other parts of the Lost Sanctum were bearable though. The Dimensional Vortex portions were very cool when they were exploring additions to the plot: I would have liked to see events from Schala's point of view -- continuing as if the camera never cut off from the Ocean Palace.
Either that or seeing the development of the El Nido Triangle would have really sealed the deal. As is, the extra parts are fun, but generate more questions than answers. I'm hoping for a re-release of CC to address some of these issues (could the DS handle it given improvements to compression etc.?)

Wasn't the El Nido Triangle created by Fate? Maybe I'm forgetting something, but I thought Chronopolis was built on some random island, and Fate did the rest.
As for a port to DS, the DS couldn't handle it as well as the PSX because of the size of the videos. If they cut all the FMVs, they could possibly squeeze everything onto the DS. More likely, they'd remake it for the PSP.

When Chronopolis was thrown into the past due to time experiments, Fate constructed the El Nido archipelago and guided it to ensure that it would be built in the far-flung future.

Fetch quests weren't really that big back when CT first came out, so maybe they thought they could catch up on it now. Remember, people looooooove fetch quests during the late 90s.
On the other hand, I got Robo decked out in full Dragon gear, most of which came from the Lost Sanctuary, so that alone made it kind of useful.

I have completed most of the side quests and am up to Lavos. I have to decide how to beat him though. I have only minimally finished the Lost Sanctum, but I don't really find that too important. I found the golden sand, looking for the young sapling. Then I realized that it's probably INSIDE the Lost Sanctum right? So all of the other young saplings (The Future and Antiquity) are useless. *sigh*

Agreed. Plus, if you're going to learn all techs right now, you might learn them while doing the side-quests of the Lost Sanctum. After doing all normal side-quests, and Lost Sanctum plus Dimensional Vortex, you'll have all techs, the best equipment, and be vastly over-leveled.
