tl,dr: if you're interested in getting involved, contact me through pm or post in this thread.

hearkening all the way back to the 3000s (http://www.ocremix.org/forums/showthread.php?t=3232) in thread numbers, this project was originally started by aetherius/hatebunny/starky in 2002 or 2003. it failed because they tried to mix 96 tracks in a community that was a hundredth of the size it is today. he came back in 2005 and attempted another remake, with a much reduced tracklist (as is seen below). drama ensued. everyone got pissed, myself and a few others quit the projects and took our tracks with us, and it petered out around the end of last year.

i thought about it, and decided that this project has some solid music on it - and i don't want it to go to waste. so i'm taking over as project leader. having already done one project, i feel that i'm up to the task of emailing people constantly and probably doing another few tracks, besides cleaning up my older ones that have already been 'finished'.

here's some stuff that starky already posted in the old thread.
- Song lengths will probably be between 3 and 6 minutes.
- The genre is restricted to ambient, rock, and orchestral(non-cheesy, please), and preferably, electronic fusion of all three. I hope to have a cohesive mix of songs by way of this genre restriction.
I want this project to be moody and somewhat melancholy. The mood should be fueled by nostalgia. The album would end up being something one might listen to on a rainy day, or while studying. Something peaceful and reflective.

i'd (back to me now) like to stick with these 'restrictions', to a reasonable extent. what we have so far fits into this pretty well.

Remixers in the project thus far:
Aetherius (lazy ass, but still wants in)
Iggy Koopa (done, need to hear from him)
The Prophet of Mephisto (technically, my first project song EVAR!)(done x3)
Rexy (done and confirmed)
Dafydd (done and confirmed)
Tensai
chthonic (done)
The Joker (done)
Ichitootah (MIA, need to hear from him)
sound test (done) - first project!
phrygianfingers - first project! (if he does something after all)
sloopygoop - first project!
DJ Mokram - first project!
xenon odyssey (done)
CN
blind
stevo HOLY CRAP

i'll be sending out pms later today to get in touch with everyone who was originally on the project. starky's sending me files later tonight.

Tracklisting and Remixer associated with it.

These are the songs that I have chosen to be arranged. 17 Tracks, which cover the main themes in the game. I've eliminated most repeating themes, which explains why any theme you might enjoy is missing. The same song arranged differently on the sound track will still be the same song arranged differently by us.
The (#/96) refers to which track is which on the gbs archive, which is available from zophar.net.

open tracks:
Track 10 > CatFish's Maw (75/92) ->
Track 14 > Inside the Egg (18/96) ->
Track 17 > Ballad/End Theme (<63>61/96) ->
Bottle Grotto* (21/96) ->
The Trendy/Fishing Games (2/96)<53/96> ->
Mr. Write's (55/96) <50/96> -> (ichitootah?)

wip'd:
Track 1 > Legend of Zelda/Overworld Theme (5/96) -> level 99
Track 6 > Tal Tal Heights (6/96) -> blind (as soon as i get a wip)
Track 7 > Tail Cave (82/96) -> someone (obtuse, sound test, or theophany, depending on the final product)
Track 15 > The Last Battle (35/96) -> CN
Track 16 > The Ballad of the Windfish (74/96) -> Dafydd (currently)

done:
Track 2 > Koholint -Unarmed- (29/96) -> chthonic
Track 3 > Mabe Village (4/96)-> xenon odyssey
Track 4 > Houses (10/96) -> Iggy Koopa
Track 5 > Mysterious Woods (9/96) -> DJ Mokram
Track 8 > Key Cavern (22/96) -> Sound Test
Track 9 > The Dream Shrine (83/96) -> The Joker
Track 11 > Face Shrine (88/96) --> The Prophet of Mephisto
Track 12 > Eagle Tower (91/96) -> Rexy
Track 13 > Turtle Rock (90/96) -> Dafydd
Richard's Villa (64/96) -> The Prophet of Mephisto & Fishy (i'll be including as a bonus the original version, with PriZm)
Animal Village (11/96) -> The Prophet of Mephisto (x11)
Choose a Name (17/96)* -> sloopygoop (it's a bonus track...it's a chiptune, but it's awesome)

open: 3 (6 including 'bonus' tracks)
wip'd: 5
done: 11+2

completion: we've got nine of the original seventeen tracks done, with five in wip form. three out of six of the added tracks are done. cool!

here's what we need so far.
-i'd like to get the rest of the tracklisting filled out. if you're interested, send me a pm or post in the thread, and i'll get back to you. don't post your auditions or wips here.
-we need a webpage of sorts, something that will function as a frontpage when we release (this isn't that important now).
-we need people to get excited about this project again. it's the longest running project on ocr (tales doesn't count anymore, it's done), and if we get it squeezed out it represents mixers from all facets of this website - from when it began to get really popular to now, when it's the standard for game music remixes (sorry vgmix, you guys are lazy).

update 1/14/09:
dafydd made a playlist of all the tracks in the correct order and everything. get it here (http://www.ngst.nu/zelda4.m3u). note that you need winamp with chipamp installed in order to make this work.

update 5/27/09: holy crap, we're halfway there of the original tracklist! we're at 10/24 if you count the extras, but it's still a big deal. awesome! keep it coming, guys!

update 9/6/09: sigs, again! hooray! thank goodness for calebyte. get the image link from my sig.

update 11/19/09: so, calebyte and company (i think we're up to three artists now) are doing individual artwork for each track. it'll be released in an artbook-style format along with the music. pretty awesome. there's some more that might be coming but i haven't gotten there yet. it'll involve writers.

Unless you really think I need to, I'd rather get away with leaving my mix as it is (sure it could use some improvement but I don't feel like fixing it up). Consider this post my "consent" or whatever it was you wanted from me. :)

Good luck with the project.

A project for my favorite game :D

Sadly, I am not great at the styles of music available to remix in here, altho I have done a few rock tracks.

If I have the time, I'll try and audition for this project :D

hey dhsu, thanks for committing to the rest of the tracks :<

vagrance and willrock: try it out! send me an audition and we'll see if we can't make something work. you'd be surprised at how good you probably are at something ambient, for example, when you try it. that's how i was =)

I FULLY SUPPORT AND ENDORSE THIS PROJECT.

Link's Awakening is one of the best original Zelda Game made, and easily the best portable title of the entire series. The music alone is a valid reason to try it out.

That said, I was disheartened to learn that the project was dismissed, and I am pleased to see Prophet take it over. He's been a constant wheel driving the Missingno Tracks along, even when some of us other wheels decided to stop spinning (my bad... March to June were bad months for me).

He's quite capable of pulling it off, and he can lend a nice set of talents to the music. I have little doubt that this project is in good hands with him at the helm.

I just realized I used, like, ten metaphors and similes. Eeeew.

Any way, I feel good about the future of this project now. I think it will work out pretty well.

Holy freaking crap.... Ballad of the Wind Fish is one of my all time favorite video game songs and rock/ambient are pretty much my genres of choice when I'm making music. I don't really have any ideas in mind ATM, but I would love to try and do something with that track. I can collaborate too, if anyone wants to.

EDIT: This is one of my brother's favorites too... and he's a pretty damn good cellist. Hmm... ideas....

EDIT AGAIN: Ok, now I have a number of ideas floating around in my head.

...Wow! I remember making something for both "Tail Cave" and "Catfish's Maw" way back in 2004 (or so the projects' file properties tell me). Very old and weak compared to what I can make now.

There's a really nice version of the windfish theme somewhere in the soundtrack (I don't remember the track number and there's no way to play back nsf's on the machine I'm on right now). Aeth obviously didn't want it in since he'd already claimed the version in the current tracklist, but since it's open, would you consider adding that other version? I'll write again as soon as I find the track number if you don't already know which one I mean (I think it's among the first 10 but I could be wrong).

Of course, I guess someone could try to make a remix of the version of the windfish theme currently listed, but in the style of that other version.

EDIT: It's track 3.

the prophet of mephisto
12-30-2008, 02:37 PM
there's one or two people competing (with me, lol) for the windfish theme. if they're both REALLY good, i might considering having one tweak it to fit that secondary track a bit.

the issue is simply that it's the equivalent of ff7's one winged angel. i mean, they didn't let some unknown hack do it, you know? they had a bunch of the best mixers on the project on it, because it's the most famous of all the songs. and everyone likes it. windfish is the same in terms of popularity with this soundtrack, and i think we should do the same with it.

i'll be really honest. if i do a good job on this one, MAYBE I'LL FINALLY PASS A SONG THROUGH THE JUDGES THAT I DID BY MYSELF. i've tried like 15 times, i've got one that i think will pass on the panel right now.

I don't have a DAW, unfortunately - it's why I haven't even submitted something to the site. :( But if there's a mixer willing to collab, I'd love to do some orchestral arrangements. This is one of my favorite game soundtracks (top ten, at least - Chrono Trigger will never be trumped :P) so I'm ecstatic to see how this goes.

It's such a shame that I got separated (and still am) from my piano. I had a solo piano WIP of the Eagle Tower theme that had a lot of potential. If only I had a portable recorder.. oh wait. I know someone with a laptop.

But it's long since taken now. Does anyone have a link to Rexy's Eagle Tower mix so I can bitterly judge it? :razz:

I just got some really good ideas for track 3.

Fun facts - incidentally, the chord progression in the chiptune is identical to that of the recent remix "Tant Mieux" for a few measures. It also begins almost exactly like the intro in Mega Man 2...

Anyway. I'll probably make my version even if it doesn't get to be on the project. But the tracklist in the first post should indicate that the windfish theme isn't unclaimed.

I wish I'd known about this earlier...

apparently, it's possible to make playlists with gbs tracks. I made one for this game, including only the songs in the tracklist in the first post, giving them the same names, and putting them in the same order, but without adding the extra info about who's remixing what etc. I also haven't limited the play time for any of the tracks to anything but 2 minutes with a 10 second fadeout. Yet. The gbs file must be named "ZELDA.gbs" and be put in the same folder as this m3u file to work however, and obviously, you can't open the m3u file in windows media player, only in winamp, and with chipamp installed.

Get it now (http://www.ngst.nu/zelda4.m3u)! And this should really be in the first post too. I really hated clicking on "next" 73 times to hear the windfish theme...

Dafydd
01-14-2009, 03:10 PM
Perhaps you should mention that bit about the filename. And then again maybe not. I could, of course, put both the gbs and the m3u in a zip and have you link to that instead... but first I'll get the timings fixed.

I'm definitely interested in this. I've got the most skill in piano and with FLStudio/Reason so I will probably make a easy listening/jazzy remix of some song. Haven't decided on what yet. This will be my first song on OCR so it will have to be well polished.

i was thinking a little different style for the artwork, really. rather than doing characters - since you go through the game really not knowing what people look like, or anything - i was thinking more symbolic stuff. like, link's sword stuck in the ground, and that kind of stuff. and remember that we're going for a rainy-day feel, so something that's of a darker palette would help too.

Ahh, I see, well, that clears things up quite a bit. Well, I'm not so good with that sort of style, but I'll try another image.

I'll be honest, I've not played this game before, so this is a bit uncharted territory for me (I understand the premise, the story and some of the characters), so if you'd rather have someone else do the artwork for it, I'll understand.

I just had an idea, the owl sitting on links sword in the ground, while the rain pouring down on him. What do you think?

Yeah, obviously, since they're not mammals, owls don't have nipples, but it sure looks like this one does. Especially since the rounded contours around them look like human male chest muscles.

Also, the handle on the sword is very short, I don't think Link could fit his hand on that. It's also a little thin, the owl doesn't seem to actually be grasping it.

But your style is nice, it looks like something E.P. Shepard would have drawn.

I thought about how that sword is going to be in relation to Kapora Gabora (the Owl, I know I didn't spell it right). But, I just don't think it would look right if he was perched on the arcs of the sword. Maybe if I have him on sort of perched on it, with his foot on one side of the handle (like a parrot will do climbing down a pole.

Dafydd
01-16-2009, 01:23 AM
I think his position is good but maybe you could extend the handle somehow? Definitely don't move him down, then it'll look like he has a penis instead. And I don't like the parrot approach, I doubt owls ever sit like that. Otherwise you could just try to move his feet together, they're pretty far apart... look at these two, it's nearly got one foot on top of the other because they're so tight.

http://i.pbase.com/o4/13/6313/1/60928178.gho200636x.jpg

Another idea is to have it sit on one foot, a lot of birds do that when it's cold. Don't know about owls.

Owls are funny looking, thankfully the one you drew isn't (aside from the nippleness that is). I read recently that they had to kill one around here because it had moved into an urban area and started eating all the cats in the neighborhood. Apparently a 28 pound one managed to escape alive though.

Ah, I see, thanks for helping me with the detail there. Never noticed that owls perch like that. I'll extend the handle. Like I said, this is a work in progress. I don't know how much more with the lack of expertise in Gimp (or Photoshop/Corel Painter 9) will take me, but hey, that's why I've got the net to research it all.

I'll extend the sword, push his feet closer, and get the details going on it.
That'll probably be a couple of hours. Which probably means I'll be up a while or you'll see it tomorrow.

So, were you guys wanting me to do the art for the website? Um, to be honest, I wouldn't know where to start with that, and two, what would it entail for me to do? I'll check some of the other projects here for research on it.

I fixed the timings on the playlist file. I used the same rules as for SPC's, namely:

1. Any song that loops plays until the looping part comes, and then that loop is played twice. Then it fades out for 10 seconds before the next song starts.
2. Any non-looping songs play until they end.

If I've looped any song more or less than twice, tell me.

To be totally honest, I'd really like to contribute art for the cover of the album. That's what I thought I was doing at first.

I'm not trying to backpedal here, I want to contribute in any possible way. I've mooched off this site long enough (5 years is long enough). I want to be a part of a project at least once.

Plus, maybe this is my small, small step into doing larger things in a possible future project.

So if it's okay, can I do this image, and you guys decide what to do with it? If you guys like it, then by all means use it. If not, then at least I've learned more of Gimp, as well as using a pen tablet.

I liked the old one better. There's too much rain and the water on the owl itself makes it look like it has frosting on it, or it was cumshot. The rain looked better in the old picture.

For comparison... the old one has much better lighting, the new one is too dark and has too heavy contours. And the rain looks much more natural in the old one. It's hard to even tell it's an owl in the new picture. You've paid more attention to detail in the new one but less to the overall impression, I think. And I like the sketchy style of the old one over the more cartoony of the new one.

This version is very nice. I know I was complaining about the sword before but the shape of the arcs was much nicer in the first one, I think. Also, how big is the owl supposed to look like? You've extended the handle a lot, the witdh/length ratio is over 3 times what it was in the original picture, so when you picture Link's hand on the handle, the owl feels only half as big as it was in the first picture. Maybe it's supposed to be that small though. Would it be too much to ask to have you try removing about 1/4 of the handle's length? I really don't know how much effort this would take on your part.

The rain looks much better, except for a few strokes in on the left edge, especially the upper part. Cropping 10-20 pixels off the left edge would probably get rid of that though.

Yeah, I'll crop off that side, and as far as the owl goes, I know Kapora is really big, at least in Ocarina he is. But I'll shorten the handle a bit more.

But right now, I've gotta get off this computer, and get to the gym. Haven't been in like a week or more (that, and I'm tired of sitting in this apartment).

the prophet of mephisto
01-16-2009, 05:04 PM
if link's sword is a true longsword, the handle should be almost a foot in length to reflect the fact that the sword is a mile long. gives you more room to adjust your hands as you strike, and helps balance it as well.

i don't mind the picture sizing ratio the way it is.

can you do a rainy beach with some flotsam cast up on it as well? some driftwood, a shell or two...reflecting link's status as flotsam in this world as well. we need a title text that can be used as a banner on the site (threshold of a dream). and, lastly, mind doing a stylized rendition of the box cover (http://cache.kotaku.com/assets/resources/2007/06/Links_Awakening_box.jpg) as well?

thanks.

edit: a seagull flying off would be cool too.

That beach idea would look nice on the back cover... anyway, about the handle, maybe it's supposed to be that long, but then the owl should be bigger.

But right now, I've gotta get off this computer, and get to the gym. Haven't been in like a week or more (that, and I'm tired of sitting in this apartment).

I would kind of like to keep the owl the size that he is, if I make him bigger, then it might look awkward. Then the sword wouldn't be as visible at the bottom, at least that's my opinion.

And yeah, I'll try to do a beach image, that'll take time since I was never that great with backgrounds.

And the stylized cover, I'll give it a shot.

Dafydd

I'm a terrible person for imagining the cover art depicting Japanese whalers hunting the Wind Fish to sell in supermarkets....

Seriously though, I like the rougher-style art that's been getting tossed around. I only played it in bits and pieces back in the day, but since the visuals weren't the highlight of the gameboy game, this kind of art displays a child-like drawing based on imaginations of the characters in the game. I don't know if that made sense, but it made sense to me!

Keep it up, every-peoples

Sorry, I don't mean to drop from that, but I'm just not that good with backgrounds, I'll need practice on this for a while before I can make something special for you guys (Gimp is starting to show it's limits), so if it's possible, you think you guys may have someone who can do the back cover justice?

I think I will try to redo and update it sometime soon, even though not for this project.

Don't take this as a definitely*, but I may try and see if I can do something about Track 14 > Inside the Egg (18/96) ->. An epic piano arrangement might be possible (if some melancholy / tripped out solo piano is close enough to the genre restrictions that is). I'll just need a few days to listen to it on repeat and make a few visits to my mom's house where the piano is, to determine whether it's something I can do.

EDIT: Heh, as a first initial task to begin memorizing the source material, I've broken Inside the Egg into sections, which I have named guitar hero style:

(0:00) intro (x2)

(0:38) sudden craziness

(0:44) bass and trills

(0:53) indian buildup

(1:12) rachmaninoff breakdown

(1:22) one last trill

And I'm currently also tracking it into FL Studio by ear with my mouse (broke my keyboard =( ) so at the very least, I'll have a good quality as pre approved by me reference midi file for anyone if someone else ends up doing it.

- one final edit to this post: I've got the source material memorized, made up a notepad file with a lot of notes outlining the main structure of the piece along with some ideas for details. starting to feel pretty excited about the potential.
it will be solo piano but not entirely live. some sections digitally altered/layered, etc. and hopefully some dignified ambience to back it. Sound good?

...haven't heard much else, lately. come on! please post any updates - no mp3s, send those to me - so i know where people are at.

Sorry for my delay. As bad as it sounds, I was working on a vocal piece for PRC141 that I sent over today (more like 5 a.m.!) instead. One of my favourite themes, thoughts were spinning in my head...had no choice! :tomatoface:

I'm usually very busy anyway, and I had very little time for that submission as it was. I did make something for this project, just not even good enough as a WIP yet.

Prophet, might one ask for your saxaphone abilities for one's track? As per our convo last night, I started doing some writing and I think a mellow jazz-ish sax vibe would be a good counterpoint (I'm just reaching for musical terms here, lol) to the guitar melody. I'll try to get you another WIP with improved writing within the next two weeks.

PS. LuketheXjesse, love the King Crimson Sig. One of my favorite albums of all time.

i'm fine with that as long as it doesn't extend into, like, kenny g-style smooth jazz, or some stupid shit like that. gotta stick with our vibe here.

Heh well, Eino, I don't know if it's right for me to subject Brad to the finger-breaking stylings that might entail, but then again, I like seeing Brad struggle :razz:

Brad - It'll be within the vibe, and DEFINITELY not Kenny G style. Think more Pink Floyd-ish, maybe a bit more aggressive than that even. It'll be fun and not boring, that I can guarantee you.

Also, another quick question that comes to mind - is there a policy on using SFX from the original games in these mixes? Not ripping any musical FX or the like, but sounds like the swords and whatnot.

There are several remixes on this site that already use SFX from the games, for example the Zelda 64 song Anthem of a Misguided Youth by chthonic. So it should be alright. :)

Anyone interested in some downloadable midis (http://www.zeldaelements.net/4music.shtml) of Links Awakening's soundtrack?
This is not the whole soundtrack, but I thought it could still be useful to someone.

Sounds like a great project, filled with a lot of memories for those behind it.
I hope it can come to fruition during this year.

I dunno if I can bring the whole rock-electro-orchestral-melancholic vibe to life, but I'll give it a try. ;-)

I'm looking at track 5 - Mysterious Woods. Would it be ok with you if I upload the remix on OCremix temp storage (http://ocrwip.fireslash.net/) when it's done?

Don't worry by the way, I'll get to work fast, and I still have lots of memories from this dreamy chapter of the saga.
But it's not about being uber, or up to the standards (which are way to high for me right now).
It's just I'm kind of a perfectionist, so I better start now cause it'll take me some time.

I don't know if you were serious when you mentioned this thread to me, prophet of definite articleship, but I'd love to look into Tal Tal Heights or even possibly Mabe Village.

I noticed a lack of Piece of Power/Guardian Acorn theme. I know that track is repetitive as hell, but I'd love to try to incorporate it as a backing... thing while doing another track. That allowed?

But I'm getting way ahead of myself, lol, since you still haven't told me why I should look in here. So consider this post my way of subscribing to the thread (and also to up my post count, woo).

EDIT: Effin' a, I forgot to subscribe when I posted. Normally I would have edited quietly to do that, but I'm sure you'll appreciate the irony so I thought I would share.

tal tal's fine by me. someone wanted to do some mabe, so i'll give them another week or two to get something in. if they don't, then you're free for mabe as well.

but tal tal's enough for now. feel free to incorperate another theme. i took aetherius's tracklist, so there's a possibility he missed something important. if it was missed, i'll add it once i hear something near a wip. if you want some help, holler at me - tal tal's an important track, and i don't want it to bomb because of something simple.

edit: pm'd a bunch of oldies who posted and said that they were interested in the old thread. surprising that it hasn't been auto-pruned yet, considering it's probably the oldest thread in community that's not stickied. and, by oldest, i mean that the thread # is 3232.

I'm fully aware of how important Tal Tal Heights is as a track...

...which is why I'm a little nervous about having no idea what setup I'm using yet. *sweatdrop*

I'm working on it, really. But I might be in touch with you once or twice about getting stuff to work (I'll keep it conceptual, don't worry). Hope that's okay.

Guardian Acorn/Piece of Power isn't that important, really. That theme is really simple, but it had a way of making you feel freakin' invincible. So... if that track would somehow stand on its own (not likely!) I'd probably want to go hardcore angry rock, though I'd have to stay within the genre spec. And if it doesn't, then I'd like to find a way to pervert it, make it a bit more melancholy or something, and fit it in Tal Tal Heights.

*shrug* But I don't need to tell you that it's one thing to have a concept in mind and quite another to execute...

ADDENDUM:

Also, just because I'm still horrendously new here: why's this on Community rather than Projects? I saw a semi-dead thread on Projects... does that mean this project has regressed a step or something?

Sorry for being dense...

this project, as mentioned in the OP, is the third iteration of the original project. the thread that's dead - not just semi-dead, but totally toast - is the second thread, which has 120 pages of drama and bitching and about 21 pages of worthwhile stuff. i couldn't edit the first page, and aeth is a loser who never does anything, so i started a new thread to take over when he turned it over to me.

we're in community for exposure. when we've got wips on 75% of the tracks, we'll go to projects, since we don't need to coverage any more then.

also, not to be rude or anything, but it's considered bad form to double post unless it's your thread or if you're bumping an old one. just use the edit button to add to your older post. we're snobs around here, unlike most internet boards. probably why most nubs don't last long.

when you've got a wip in, then i'll write you in.

by the way, sloopygoop the magnificant chiptunist has sent me another wip. not quite as long (only 7.5 minutes this time), but still excellent, and as a whole it fits the mood we're looking for, too.

i should tell you a little about him. he goes to my alma mater for undergrad, and runs a comic strip publication on campus pretty much by himself. he's got a zillion classes he's doing, and he sings in a choir on campus as well (at least, i'm pretty sure he was in men's choir when i was scabbing in there for the director). i found out he was interested in chiptunes when he asked if i had a copy of an old motet we sang in mens choir so he could chiptune it (i worked in the music library at the time). i kinda looked at him weird and told him we didn't have it. when he contacted me about this project, i honestly didn't know what to expect - i knew he was interested, but i expected a chip-rip (wouldn't be a midi rip, right?). and then my email vomited out this 12-megabyte mp3 file at me. i immediately thought it would suck. who'd ever heard of a 7.5-minute chiptune by an unknown artist that was actually good?

can i say that his wip is better than most of the chiptune stuff you hear at conventions? way more creative, way less of the boom-tiss fake techno you normally hear of this genre. he's melded like seven different variations on the main theme into one big thing - including an avant-garde section, a waltz (not cookie-cutter, either), and a really cool tense section that makes me think of the 'ho-shit running out of time' music in most spy films. pretty awesome. a little repetitive at this point (this coming from a fan of the 3-minute rock ballad) but there's so little to trim that's not original and inventive in some way.

not that he's ever here to read this, but it's cool. did i mention he's got like six posts and ahs only been doing this for a little while?

Why, for the love of all things true and wonderful, is there no one doing the Southern Temple theme?

Please? I know it's pretty much just the main theme redone a bit, but god damn, it's a beautiful take on it, and it's one of the key points of the game where you realize the truth of the island. It has to be in there somewhere.

BTW, I have a concept sketch in progress. I know I've asked before, but this was like two weeks ago-- do you need it by any specific time? It's finals week for me, but I only have one more at this point and then I'm pretty much home free and have a week and a half in which I could work on it practically uninterrupted.

Somehow I managed to come up with a semi-interesting piano solo (currently 8 bars, soon 16), but I need to construct a song into which it will fit. (I also have other stuff, but it needs tweaking... everything always needs tweaking...)

Note to self: I think I need to hit the tutorials again...

Feel free to check out the demo of the release at the link above.

As for your project, I look forward to hearing it once you guys get this finished. :)

It's not for sale or download internationally yet. I'll update here if that changes.

so, has anyone heard of steve reich's piece 'new york counterpoint'? there's a good chance i'm going to be using that as a strong influence for one of these songs. i'm working on it now.

well, kind of. i'm going to bed now. i'll wake up in seven hours, shave my head some more (it's getting long), and write some music. but reich is brilliant! absolutely brilliant, i say.

Is that the one with like eight clarinets?

I remember looking at the score in the library at my school but I haven't heard the piece.

11, yeah. it's supposed to be a solo player with a pre-recorded (by them) accompaniment of seven other soprano clarinets and three bass clarinets (one of the bass clarinets switches between bass and soprano during the course of the piece). pretty awesome. reich is a master of pointillism. i've been listening to the piece for three years and i still am learning new things about his counterpoint.

i've got a basic arrangement down, but it feels REALLY close to reich's original piece. it's pretty, uh, liberal, too, as a remix, considering i used The Trendy as the source tune. i really only used, like, the first bar of melody, and just repeated it ad nauseum. that's all there really is in the OST anyways, that little melody snippet and a bassline that moves around. and, it's my project, so i can release any crap i want and call it a remix.

we'll see how the recording turns out. gonna take forever to record.

Sound Test

Just listened to that 'New York Counterpoint' piece. Awesome stuff. It reminds me of when I discovered the soundtrack to a Sega Saturn game called Enemy Zero. Not too many game soundtracks get household name composers, but I quickly discovered that Michael Nyman has had quite the visible career. I don't think he's done any more game soundtracks though.

On another note, I'm finished with my senior year of college! I don't have 100% confidence in my grade for one of the classes I need to graduate though. I think I'll make it, but we'll see. Anyway, this means I'll have more time to hone my remixing skills, so you may just see me twice on this project.
