Sound Card

Im now finding that, as I make more complicated songs, the slowdown in my computer and crackling in my speakers has become almost intolerable.

I only have a gig of ram, but ive heard that what I really should get is a soundcard. Do you guys agree?

Anyways, im not asking for a big list. I would preferably want something that connects through USB or Firewire. Could anyone suggest a decent sound card costing up to $100 that could solve my crackly, poppy problem?
