Hey guys, haven't posted in a while, but I had an idea on something I think OCR might know plenty about.
As I was assembling my bed yesterday, I decided to listen to some music. Going through my girlfriend's CDs, I happened upon Chumbawumba's "Tubthumper." Most people will be familiar with this album's breakout single "I Get Knocked Down." From my hazy memories of middle school I dredged up a recollection of someone telling me that the CD itself was actually quite good. At the time, I definitely had my doubts about the album.
Sure enough, it's surprisingly intelligent and well made. The single isn't musically a radical departure from the rest of the album, but the rest of the songs deal with issues as diverse and incisive as class division, domestic violence, and the homeless.
So, OCR, I ask you, what great albums have gotten "lost" under the weight of their singles?

Blur - Blur
Primarily because most people know this group from their single Song 2 (I like some of their other albums better and this is slightly biased considering their one of my favorite bands)
CAKE - Prolonging the Magic
The lead single "Never There" is one of the best tracks off of the album, but the rest is just so good too, one of my favs. This album can also be substituted with CAKE's Fashion Nugget because "The Distance" overshadowed the whole thing as well.
Gnarls Barkley - St. Elsewhere
The entire album was fantastic but all most people have from it is "Crazy"

The Real Thing from Faith No More
Yeah sure Epic is an amazing song but the rest of the album kicks ass too.

I thought this was going to be a LOST soundtrack discussion.
I second Luke. Also...
Aquabats, The - The Fury Of The Aquabats (single: Super Rad)
Days Of The New - Days Of The New (2; Green) (single: Enemy)
Local H - Here Comes The Zoo (single: Half Life)
Monster Magnet - Powertrip (single: Space Lord)
Smiths, The - Meat Is Murder (single: How Soon Is Now?)
Stereo MC's - Connected (single: Connected)

i agree with this. i hate most hip-hop but i enjoyed the album. i still quote the title song occasionally.
i'd stick in lostprophets' album start something. i love every song on that album. singles that you know from it would be either "i don't know" (which is one of my all-time favorites) and "last train home" (which really isn't as good as the rest of the album). i also enjoyed finger eleven's self-titled debut album (you know "one thing", which doesn't sound ANYTHING like the rest of the album).

Evanescence's The Open Door - known best, perhaps, for "Call me When You're Sober" while the rest of the album has a very different, more personal feel than the radio-friendly single.
Seal's Seal II [1994] - all you may know from it is "Kiss From a Rose" but the rest of the album is an incredible amalgam of musical styles and poignant lyrics.
Big Country's The Crossing - my favorite album (and band) of all time. The only song which made it States-side of the Atlantic was "In a Big Country" (some of you 80s buffs may recognize it).
Good thread, RealFolkBlues.

That's a trump card, right there.
Anso, don't kill the thread...
more:
10,000 Maniacs - Our Time In Eden (single: These Are Days)
Cardigans, The - Gran Turismo (single: My Favourite Game)
Eels - Daisies Of The Galaxy (single [well-known via Shrek, anyway]: Mr. E's Beautiful Blues)
Jane's Addiction - Nothing's Shocking (single: Jane Says)
Mighty Mighty Bosstones, The - Pay Attention (single: So Sad To Say)
EDIT: I have to un-agree with Luke now that I realize that The Real Thing reached 11 in the billboards... not exactly 'lost'.

Anything by Tori Amos because she had like two singles that people might know and about seven completely amazing albums spanning almost twenty years! ahhhH!H!H!H!! <@

I heard the whole album once. While I wouldn't buy it myself, it was pretty good.
Some of mine are:
Eiffel 65 - Europop (single: "Blue")
(AkumajoBelmont agrees with me on this)
Bloodhound Gang - Hooray for Boobies (single: "The Bad Touch")
(sophomoric, of course, but pretty funny and even witty)
Smashmouth - Fush Yu Mang (single: "Walking on the Sun")
(while not necessarily a stellar album, merely good, it's noticable because every single other song on the album is punk)
Personally, I think the real test of an album is if you like the non-singles more than the singles.
Edit: RealFolkBlues: the name of the Chumbawumba song was "Tubthumping." :<

Shaggy - Hotshot. Of course, my rooommates tell me Shaggy hasn't been cool since 1998, but I still really enjoy the album. The single Dance & Shout is great, but so is everything else.
Muse - Absolution. This is one of my favorite albums of all time, because no one song really overpowers the rest. Not even sure which ones from here were the singles, but this album is great.
Tool - Every album. It takes a certain type to really appreciate these guys (you have to have the patience for math metal), but it is so worth it.

Sort of sad how many of these albums I own and haven't listened to in years. In the late 90's I started picking up albums whenever they had even one song I liked. Thank God for the days of youtube and iTunes now.
Smashmouth - Fush Yu Mang (single: "Walking on the Sun")
(while not necessarily a stellar album, merely good, it's noticable because every single other song on the album is punk)
Yeah, I have the Smash Mouth album and I was really surprised hearing it when I first got it. I do think it's not bad, but it was totally not what I was expecting.
Tubthumper has a few really catchy songs outside of the big single. "Amnesia" is pretty awesome, I think it was a single too.
I'll offer up Third Eye Blind's first album as a lost one. They're what I like to call a one-album wonder - had a few big hits off the first album, one minor hit off the second album, and then nothing. People only remember the hits. Their first album is pretty good though (and you can probably find it used pretty easily), and a handful of the album tracks match the quality of the singles.

If we're going across albums then I want to mention Devo - Q: Are We Human A: We Are Devo!!, because that album is damn near brilliant but largely unrecognized, probably because "Whip It" isn't on it.

I wouldn't call this a lost album because it's fairly critically acclaimed nowadays (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Question:_Are_We_Not_Men%3F_Answer:_We_Are_Devo!#R eception), but it definitely deserves as many fans as "Whip It". :)

I'd say Weezer's Green Album AND Maladriot. I vividly remember playing DK64 with the Green Album for some reason. I really liked that album, it's not their best, but a good album to come back with.
Maladriot, I had a love hate relationship with. I disliked it at first, but after some time, I grew to like it (just like My Morning Jacket's "It Still Moves" album, at least with me). Weezer definitely was trying to do something a little more hard (KISS is one of River Cuomo's favorite bands), and it's actually a good album. Burndt Jamb was one of my favorites, besides Keep Fishing.
I hated that a lot of people panned Maladriot, I still enjoy playing it every now and then.
I would say Pinkerton is a "Lost" album, but it has gained such a huge cult following, and is widely regarded as Weezer's finest hour, that I don't think it'd count.
Oh, can I add the Batman Forever CD? It had some good spots in it (U2, Offspring, The Flaming Lips).

Yeah but initially it wasn't and its rarely seen on "Best CDs of the 80s" lists, and most people are only familiar with Devo as "that band that does 'Whip It'"

Right, but Q/A didn't have a recognizable single whereas Freedom Of Choice did. So FoC is the only real contender if a popular single is a requirement; but FoC charted rather highly, so I wouldn't count it either. It's not a bad album but, like The Real Thing, it's not on-topic. Not that I agree with every album that's been posted here, but we should at least try to keep the rails in sight.
If anyone's wondering, I'm getting my chart info and such from AMG (http://www.allmusic.com/). It's essential, really.

Björk's Post---known for "It's Oh So Quiet." i still don't know how that song trumps something like "Modern Things" which is a really terrific song.
Jamie Cullum's Twentysomething, known briefly for its title track. i didn't know it when I bought the album, but pretty much every song on here has just so much heart and music in it. I love his cover of Radiohead's "High & Dry" and his song "All at Sea."
Right, but Q/A didn't have a recognizable single whereas Freedom Of Choice did.
But that album did have their awesome cover of "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction!"
...aaaaand that's pretty much all i know about it:|

Call of the West - Wall of Voodoo (Single: Mexican Radio)
Fun 80s pop sensibility, buried under an avalanche of silly.
El Oso - Soul Coughing (Single: Rolling)
Bizare stuff, kind of poppish.. avante-garde surrealism.
In Sides - Orbital (Single: The Box (part 2))
Wonderful electronical with leanings in the ambient direction.
Seconded on the Days of the New album, though I liked the first one better.
And a bonus album that didn't have a big hit single, but just was overlooked in general:
Songs for Dustmites - Steve Burns
Yeah, the guy from Blue's Clues. This is a fantastic indie-pop/rock album.
All 4 of Hanson's uniformly excellent albums have been overshadowed by mmmbop.

311 - Transistor - A really underrated and often misunderstood band with an extremely underrated album. Transistor is a very psychedelic blend of reggae, rock, hip hop, jazz, funk and eastern music that was drowned under the success of their self-titled album. And it has 21 songs too. Words can't do it justice though.
Sponge - Rotting Pinata - An odd grunge album with thick, emotional, hard rocking songs. The lyrics to this album are emignatic but some are tear-jerking, yet it lacks the crying-in-my-sister's-pants bullshit of today's emo bullshit albums. It's an emotional album but very masculine at the same time.
Spacehog - Resident Alien - An excellent, uplifting space-themed record by a British band who ripped off David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust and did it so well that it made me skip out of a party just so I could listen to it some more. Every song is solid and the album has an excellent flow. Very unique sound too, even though it is distinctly British.
Oh, props for mentioning Days of the New. I respect their uniqueness and songwriting.
Also, like a few of you already said - Smash Mouth made some good, enjoyable music. A lot of people called me a dick for buying their first two albums, but now most of us long for the good ol' days when "happy" and "rockin" weren't mutually exclusive.
Cardigans, The - Gran Turismo (single: My Favourite Game)Oh, can I add the Batman Forever CD? It had some good spots in it (U2, Offspring, The Flaming Lips).Hah, I was considering mentioning both of these. I was given both of those when I was younger (9 or 10 years old), and didn't really appreciate them until I relistened to them in the past two or three years. I really like that Cardigans album in particular.

Got some good suggestions going on here. I like it.
Cake is an excellent example of this thread; "Comfort Eagle" is amongst my favorite albums of all time, but a lot of people don't know it because "The Distance" was so overplayed. Good song, but not as good as the rest of that CD.
I think Ben Folds is eternally doing this; "Brick" was a good song, but not as good as the whole of his work on the Ben Folds Five CD "Whatever, ever, and Amen." The same applies to his solo album "Rocking the Suburbs;" the title track was pretty popular, but that CD sits proudly in my top ten of all time, as does Ben Folds himself in my top ten artists.

Yes, I agree with Ben Folds Five's Whatever and Ever Amen. That's one of my favorite albums of all time; I can't believe I didn't think of it sooner. "The Battle of Who Could Care Less" got some airplay off that album too, I remember.
I haven't heard his solo albums apart from the singles; I'll check them out!

If you are a rock fan, and do not have Failure - Fantastic Planet in your collection, you are not worthy. They did have a semi hit with Stuck On You off that album, but in terms of quality, that song, while catchy, doesn't really represent the album at all. Its actually one of the few albums that I can listen to all the way through too and not skip a single song, and considering its a 17 track cd, that shows a lot. But I'm a huge Failure fanboy anyway.

I'm a big fan of Cake- their albums are all quite solid from start to finish. It's too bad they're mostly only recognised for The Distance, Short Skirt/Long Jacket and Sheep Go to Heaven.
Pendulum's album Hold Your Colour is also a great example. Slam overshadowed some really great tracks. And then the re-release replaced perhaps the two best songs on the album with two of sheer mediocrity. :(
