There's the actual new Zelda game video, coming out on DS. Link needs to get away from vehicles though -- walking's still cool! :p

Agreed. Though Phantom Hourglass's trailers also had hot music, and the game turned out to be a bit subpar in that department...
However, those trailermusics were just remixes. A lot of this sounds original. Hopefully a good sign?

I just hope to God that I can use the d-pad to make Link walk in this one. I hated Phantom Hourglass for two reasons: the repetitive and overly-long dungeon that you had to keep going back to was annoying, and the touch-controlled walking annoyed the hell out of me (which, actually, is why I hated Dragon Ball Origins). If you're going to put it in, fine, but let the player decide whether he wantes to play every part of the game with the touch controls.

I don't know how I feel about this one. PH was really forgettable for me, because I played it through once, and it just seemed to end and that was it. I haven't ever had an interest in dusting it off and playing it again. I liked the boat, both because it was upgradable and because I never minded sailing places even in Wind Waker. But I didn't like that the story only picked up once or twice and then ended. The ending was good, the rest not so much. And now we're going to be on a train instead of a boat, and I'm not really seeing how that's not a gimmick.
Don't get me wrong, I love Zelda games to death and will probably buy and play the crap out of it when it comes out. But I'd like to play a Zelda game that didn't rely on putting in one or two gimmicks just to sell. Twilight Princess was pretty good for that. It gave me the adventure, let me roam around, and still retain it's Zelda type qualities. The newer handheld games just get a little to lost in making for a "fun time" and I think they tend to suffer for it. Even Minish Cap had those rock things, that while fun, could get rather tedious after awhile because you couldn't find the right damn piece.

Link on a Train is like Snakes on a Plane.
"I'm tired of these M* Links on this M* train!"
Both hilarious to watch, but not worth the money... (imo - the only Celda done right was Wind Waker, for size of game. PH felt like a milk-the-cow game).

What's wrong with Cel Shaded Zelda? I think it was the best idea Nintendo had. Not only that, The Wind Waker had such a fresh new feel. And a good story to boot.
Not every game has to look realistic. Not to mention that it if was like that on the DS, it wouldn't be that good.

EXACTLY. That's where I think alot of whiners chime in about all that. I honestly don't want them to keep a whole "Mature" realistic Zelda going all the time. They need to break free from that formula, shake things up like they did with Wind Waker.
Otherwise it'll be like Twilight Princess, with a bunch of moments that were pretty much like Ocarina. Don't get me wrong, TP had A LOT of great cutscenes, and great new characters like Midna, and, uh, the chicks that ran the fishing/boat shooting game (I botched that for sure).

Link on a train is win.
Looks like i'm gonna be preordering another DS game.
I noticed they brought in the touch screen boomerang again. Incidentally enough, the only Zelda game boomerang that I have liked is the one in A Link to the Past. I certainly hope you get the bow in this one.
Additionally, I think that the cell shaded style is best for the DS, because it offers a good looking 3D engine for a system with low resolution, and a relatively weak processor.
Also, Link on a train seems pretty cool, as long as it isn't hyper-gimmicky (though with what Nintendo has been putting out recently, I get the creeping feeling that I should be bracing myself for disappointment).
Ho, hum, I'm still a Zelda fanboy, and will follow the franchise to it's prospective grave no matter what they do with it.
Antipode

My favorite boomerang is from Oracle of Seasons. Launch it, and then control it around with the D-Pad! Cut down all the grass/bushes in just a few seconds, and hit enemies from around stuff! I honestly would prefer that to the stylus boomerang.

Well, they had boats with engines in Phantom Hourglass, walking Mech cannons in Twilight Princess, and ... stone and wooden rails were used 1-2 thousand years ago with human and animal power pushing it, it's not that big of stretch for Nintendo to have engines adapted to land vehicles at this point...
... would be kind of cool if Nintendo was gearing up a gentle transition in time period to the series. I mean, I know it ain't happening because Nintendo refuses to solidify a real story with Zelda, but hey, at least the setting feels a little fresher than usual.
While I loved the sailing portions of Phantom Hourglass, many people I talked to said it was pretty much like being on rails, I can understand... but... haha... this new vehicle doesn't help that criticism... at all. lol.
Anyway, good times. I might pick it up. Phantom Hourglass was fun, but I don't know if it's worth my money on day 1. I'll think about it.

After the last couple years of games, I'm becoming convinced that Nintendo needs fresh people to come up with game ideas. This Zelda kinda feels like "We need to make more use of the game engine we made for PH."

For the most part, although I think you'd be pretty hard-pressed to find much of anything cute in Zelda II. Except maybe some of the artwork in the manual, but even that's not really so much cute as it is standard late 80s anime-esque.
Now some of the artwork from the original Zelda (http://www.giantbomb.com/profile/jcgamer/45-hours-into-dq-viii/30-22833/)is pretty darned cute, and I think it would be kind of neat to see them do another big cel-shaded game, but with that art-style rather than another with WW football head.

I had the image of Link ramming Ganondorf with a train in order to finish him off... it was a fun little thought.
Well anyway, seeing as how these type of threads are for rampant speculation, I bet that the path of the train will be controlled with the touch screen, by drawing the path that the train will take, in an unabashedly similar way to PH. Which correlates with the title of spirit tracks, as it implies that the tracks are somewhat ethereal (maybe not the right word), and can be placed wherever you want.
And if they had a systen like that in place, it would be cool if you could warp by placing a magic warp tunnel in your path that would warp you from any point a to (hopefully) any point b. though what with the current tradition of Zelda warping mechanisms, I'm thinking that there would be a limited amount of point b's (train stations anyone?).

Really looking forward to this one. Train sounds unique gameplay-wise...not to mention adding more "modern" technology to the Zelda series is long-overdue. Interested in how they will tie-in this game in terms of storyline.
Some of the new weapons in the trailer look really unique...very Minish Cap-like. Even though they're using the same game engine of Phantom Hourglass, the gameplay seems to be different enough.
PH is the best portable Zelda game I've ever played and it has added a lot of innovative concepts to the series' traditions because of touch-screen controls. Personally, I think it's better than Twilight Princess in some respects since PH nicely takes full advantage of its system while TP Wii was kind of frustrating to control with the exception of its minigames. Moreover, I'm one of those people who loved the Temple of the Ocean King due to its challenging difficulty.

I'm sure Nintendo listened to the criticism, and hopefully took it into account. That wasn't why I didn't finish the game, the ice dungeon had some stupid timed event, and I couldn't get past it because I had to walk some tight rope, so I just said screw it.

If you couldn't finish PH because of the Ocean King temple, you need to suck it up. It wasn't that hard, nor was it that tedious.

Saying the Temple of the Ocean King wasn't tedious is like saying searching for all those Triforce pieces in Wind Waker wasn't tedious.
Battousai
03-28-2009, 07:33 AM
Except that every item you got in the various dungeons made it easier each time to get through the TotOK, plus you had the checkpoint to skip through the first 3 or 4 screens. Whereas NOTHING makes it easier to get to the places in the middle of the stupid ocean to pull up pieces of triforce. That comparison of yours blows.
Kenobio
03-28-2009, 08:10 AM
Well, I'm just comparing them in the sense that they gave me that same feeling of tedium, that's all. The items and check points (as well as warping via the Ballad of Gales in WW) did help quite a bit in terms of getting through the Temple of the Ocean King or dredging out the Triforce pieces, but overall I found both tasks fairly boring and tiresome compared to other dungeons or parts of these otherwise excellent games.
But going back on topic, Spirit Tracks looks pretty cool so far. I'm confident Nintendo will come up with some pretty innovative new ideas. Hmmmm, I wonder... will we see Link flying in the sky in some future game?

I concur; Yahtzee can go fuck itself.
Honestly, I don't really see what the big deal about Link's mode of transportation is. Whether he's walking there or riding a horse or sailing a boat or driving a train, you have to spend time moving from one place to another, which can sometimes be dull but is required in order to, y'know, keep every single location in the game from being right next to each other. I actually sort of like the idea that seems to be behind the train; it basically drives itself while you do something else (like shooting at shit); it's certainly more entertaining than just having to ignore things and run away from them or stop going-toward-where-you-want-to-be in order to fight them like you do in other Zelda games.

What many people have an issue with is that the original Zelda wasn't "Legend of Zelda: The Recorder", "Zelda: Epona the Magic Horse", "Zelda: The Statues of the Owl", etc. It seems that Zelda games as of late are focusing too much on your mode of transportation, when in fact that's all they are.

As of late? Like what?
Minish Cap? The doesn't take you anywhere, it just shrinks you. Twilight Princess? You carry her around. Phantom Hourglass? That's not the name of your boat.
And no, the original Zelda wasn't "The Recorder" because it was the original Zelda. Who's going to put a subtitle on that?
And as for "Epona the Magic Horse," I assume you're talking about "Ocarina of Time," which, last I checked, was a mode of transportation.
The only two Zelda games that have used your mode of transportation in the title of the game were "Ocarina of Time" and "Wind Waker," and those items did a lot more than just get you from place to place.
"Zelda games of late" are not "focusing on your mode of transportation." So Link's not walking around an overworld on foot anymore. It's not like 3D Zelda games have been particularly groundbreaking in that respect. Running across Hyrule on foot in Ocarina of Time was just as boring as sailing across the ocean in Wind Waker. The only difference? You had to push your stick forward.
Phantom Hourglass's boating was fun. You set your course and let your boat go, while you can concentrate on killing enemies. It was a lot more elegant than trying to steer a boat while trying to fire a cannon at the same time.

I agree; the automatic steering (as long as you have some control over where you're going) makes travel more interesting. More enemies can show up, since you're allowed to blast them on the move. TWW's overworld was really sparse, and when enemies did show up, it was annoying to momentarily stop and deal with them. Same with OoT. PH condensed things, threw in more random enemies, and allowed you to attack without interrupting your travel. And it looks like ST will be similar in that regard, so I'm happy about that.

Saying the Temple of the Ocean King wasn't tedious is like saying searching for all those Triforce pieces in Wind Waker wasn't tedious.
Because getting all those triforce pieces didn't have any fun puzzles or mazes and getting each one was the exact same process.
Right.

well, i'm just comparing them in the sense that they gave me that same feeling of tedium, that's all. ...but overall i found both tasks fairly boring and tiresome compared to other dungeons or parts of these otherwise excellent games.

I agree, both tasks were ultimately very annoying.
However, the temple was at least exciting/infuriating. The triforce hunt just felt... well, ho-hum. One of the few times anything in WW did, for that matter.

Looks like a solid game to me. Can't wait to pick it up.
People that go all fucking crazy over the train are hilarious to me. It's not like that's ALL there is in the game.

I'll be the first to admit that that's the only fault I had with that game. But then again, they said they had to cut two dungeons out to get the game to meet it's release date. Maybe if they had delayed it just a bit more, we could have had an even bigger better game.
Not that there's anything wrong with it.
Sorry, had to put in a Seinfeld reference.

I never completed Phantom Hourglass because, like Yahtzee, the Temple of the Ocean King can go fuck itself. I'm not doing the same fucking puzzles each time I re-enter, while having unbeatable bad guys chase after my ass on a TIME LIMIT. I'm pretty sure it's the only Zelda I haven't completed (besides Zelda II), but it's the first I just refuse to complete.
SOOOOooooooo.... In other words, you're saying that a Zelda game, a NEW Zelda game, is hard. Hard, instead of easy, like many people accuse Zelda games of being lately.
Just had to point this out.

Hard? where did Xenon talk about difficulty? i played the game until i was forced to cross the donjon again (i think it was for the finla battle) it's not hard, it's just annoying to redo the same think all over again. Yes some item allow you to cross them faster but even with that it's annoying.

Well, I'm sorry that everyone else whipped through the fucking place like a tornado and bitch-slapped the snot out of Bellum, but I won't apologize for my opinion.
And it's not like I said it was a terrible game; it's just that goddamn temple brings everything else down with it.

PH was good, hell if there was anything that was bad about it, it's having to yell through the mic like an asshole all the while riding the subway system during the early morning where everyone look wasted, suffering from hang overs or just still sleepy. The dungeon's (including the last one) had its moments and didn't bother me at all. Bellum was a rather fun fight.

But, guys, you may have found a place/dungeon/fight easier than other people, it won't change anything.
Sorry but I don't like when someone is stuck or having difficulties in a place and everyone comes to post after and says: "oh I managed ! It was easy for ME."
If I say that, it's because sometimes, reading some posts about that, I'm myself thinking "well I don't see where it's difficult". But I don't reply, because there's no need.
(/end of flame, I don't like that. Have a good day ^^)

That's amazing. We still don't have good vehicle (or horse, for that matter) based combat in a zelda game -- a train doesn't seem like a good place to start for that.

I'm sure Nintendo listened to the criticism, and hopefully took it into account. That wasn't why I didn't finish the game, the ice dungeon had some stupid timed event, and I couldn't get past it because I had to walk some tight rope, so I just said screw it.
I still like Phantom Hourglass though.
Nintendo listening to criticism and taking it into account? LOL.

Excited about this game. I loved Phantom Hourglass. Music in that trailer is hotness.
I liked Phantom Hourglass as well, except for using the touch screen the whole time. I prefer using the d-pad. Oh well.
The trailer for Spirit Tracks is very interesting. Looking forward to the release of the game.
