BadAss
The Boss Themes Project

So, yeah, Ass Kickery!

PURPOSE
The reason for this project is to make an album that celebrates the awesomeness, as well as kick-assery, of the Villains of the games we love. Why, you might ask. Simple, I'd respond, ”Cause they're badassed, that‘s why.” Boss & Mini boss themes, Mini Boss Battle themes, & Villain character themes are the order of the day. Other tracks from the respective game can also be added to add some flavor, as long as the meat & potatoes are the Bosses theme.

GENRE
Although I'd like to allow a wide range of styles for this project, I'd like to keep it in the dark, aggressive territory. A spiritual sequel to Dark Side of Phobos, in a sense. I'd like anything from ominous, creepy ambient trip hop (like Akira Yamaoka), to aggressive rock, to bombastic pounding orchestral, to fight electronica (kinda like TCM or Prodigy), & genre mashes filled with awesomeness. Basically music that sets the stage for ass-kickery (hardcore style).

TRACKS SELECTION
So, track selection is open. You can choose any boss theme, from any game, even if it's not listed. To reiterate, if you want to do a theme that's not listed, let me know, & based on how good your wip is, I'll add it. No one is a sure thing until I or a another coordinator (at a future date) tells you, which means even if you get a track up, if someone comes along that's a bit better, than, we have a old west duel. Best "shooter", or in this case track, wins. Best in this case not necessarily the most pro sounding, but the most creative & evocative of the project. Also, access to the Boss Themes sub forum at http://www.kngi.org/phpbb3/index.php(it's a new urly). You know you wants it!

I love the idea of a boss theme project, but I don't like the way you're approaching it.

90% of all video games have a boss of some kind or another. It's pretty much a staple of all games in popular genres today. To me, this seems like a great opportunity to remix boss themes from games which haven't seen daylight here at OCR, and to focus on different themes rather than boss characters, especially those from very popular games which have likely been remixed several times already. If I were you, I'd expand the project to something ten times this size and start pulling in great (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I1fZxIX0psU&feature=related) boss (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OHt8-TAG5Os&feature=related) themes (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HfgsT9aD2po) from (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e2iwPJ-wX-A&feature=related) all (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ejbvg_w2XQ&feature=PlayList&p=5356DF5CDFF95544&index=0&playnext=1) over (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p8IhkJTWgG8) the (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hueiNU7P20M) place (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dGdvT1B-VN8&feature=related).

requires some more...

Earthbound - Pokey Means Business
Live-A-Live - Pure Odio
Rudra no Hihou - Battle of the Last Enemy ~ Final Conflict
Golden Axe - Death Adder
TMNT (NES) - Mini-Boss music
Double Dragon 2 - Boss music
Streets of Rage 2 - Max Man
Bahamut Lagoon - The Last Battle
Contra 3 - Boss Theme

...ORSMTH

but yeah, aside from my own selfish desires this is what I like to see. not just sticking to one single game and doing the WHOLE soundtrack, but rather taking what's good from several games and focusing on that.

NEWSFLASH :: typically a whole soundtrack is not worthy enough of getting remixed. there ARE exceptions though... like The Magic of Scheherazade. lolololz

I think some people missed the part where I said that I'd add more bosses as the project went, & artists wanted to do them. I really want SoR2's boss themes in there as well, someone just has to say they want it, & show me a wip.

i just really put the bosses off the top of my head on the list, I really hope this gets bigger & gets more obscure boss themes.

Works for me! I guess the only thing I'd say there then is that we keep it focused on boss themes rather than the themes of certain bosses (if that makes sense).

I don't know what you're talking about, but I agree completely nonetheless.
If we keep our focus to specific bosses, that's inherently limiting. Rather than saying, "Oh, I like this boss character. I wonder how many times we fight him and what the music is when we do," we should say, "These are some kickass boss themes. We should totally remix them." Many of the boss themes I linked were "regular" boss themes and not associated with any particular boss. And also, it means that lesser-seen games which have awesome themes have the chance to be remixed, rather than the already famous boss themes and characters everyone knows.

That would open the project up a lot, and I think that's what the Joker wants.

Exactly. Like the Zelda OoT mini boss theme is not specific to anyone, but it's still a boss theme, so I'd take it.

Also, BGC, that's awesome. If you could do anything, that'd be sweet, if not, it's still cool you checked us out.

In the last incarnation of this project, everyone was throwing around boss themes. Most of them were pretty cool, the the most importnat reason is that we have remixers that are passionate about remixing a theme. So it's up to them to come up with something good

I'd just like to toss out a few more ideas/suggestions/inspiration sources/etc.:

1. There's a platformer for the SNES that was never released stateside until recently called DoReMi Fantasy: Milon's DokiDoki Adventure (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DoReMi_Fantasy:_Milon's_DokiDoki_Adventure),
which is the sequel to Milon's Secret Castle on the NES, and it singlehandedly has one of the best soundtracks of any game on the SNES. example (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T13NBQM-x8Y&feature=related), example (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qNYXJ-VyAoA&feature=related), boss fight example (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w5SIomBNFsg&feature=related).
But what bothers me most extreme is that I can't find any quality example of the Boss Music I'd like you to hear. :banghead:
It's the boss of the forest world (the first world), and its the music for the Wood Robot.

2. The concept of "Vs."
Why limit each track to a single boss theme, why not meld or mix two (or more) together?
e.g. Who would win in a fight: M.Bison or Ganondorf?
What if Dr. Wily and Dr. Robotinik teamed up to make the ultimate robot of destruction?

These (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AZ8tCEEg6A8&feature=related) two (http://www.newgrounds.com/audio/listen/120136) sound similar to begin with. Perhaps...?

This. Just this. I love video game music, but I don't know the first thing *about* music, let alone composition and execution. Short of actually taking a class or being taught by someone else, I don't think all the online tutorials in the world would help me out here. It's why I've not attempted to mix anything at all. XD

But for the overarching project, I think this is a really good plans. And might I say that I'm especially looking forward to seeing what Joker does with Gruntilda's theme from the Banjo series? That was one of my very favorite villain leitmotifs out there.

Thanks for the comment on Wounds of the Past.

Regarding a co-op, as much as it makes me sound like a control freak, I prefer to work on my remixes myself. I'm all for feedback and everything, but when it comes to actually working on them, I keep it "in house" as it were (for better or for worse). I do appreciate the offer though.

If you're interested, I have an updated version of Bio Tech (v3, less reverb-laden and distant, a bit louder, a few other tweaks), as well as some other, newer remixes on my site (click my sig). I intend to put up similarly tweaked versions of "Wounds" and "Fallen's" as well at some point in the not too distant future.

Yeah, I can understand that. Personally the best experiences in making music have been collaborations, but I can definitely relate, there is sometimes a feeling of loss of control or it just doesn't gel.

The Joker
04-06-2009, 02:31 PM
Like I said, there is jo list. Those bosses are just off the top of my head. I'd really like for artists to have the flexibility in this project to remix a boss song of their choosing, from any game, as long as it's a boss fight. Like, say, if they ever wanted to remix that mini boss theme from SMB3, they could do it. It's not on the list, but it's a boss theme, so it's good.

Now on to new business. I think I've settled on a name, but I'm not sure. I'd like the opinion of the other artists on this project, so, yeah, both those with wips, & those undecided, head to http://kngi.org/forum, & read the thread. Then, gimme your opinion.

So, as you can tell from the first post, we've got an official name! And it kicks all sort of Buttocks! Also, it's BadAss, because that's what this project is.

Also, We've got another addition to the casuse, Children of the Monkey Machine has joined, but is still decideding on a track. Also, summer is pretty much here, so, it's time to gear up for ass kickery. So keep your eyes open, & if you feel like joining the cause (of awesome badassness) then send a pm, & we'll discuss that mug.

And a reference towards what appears to be a (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DYCj1A3mz6c) rather (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jv98OPK_wdE) obscure (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cMZOBUYx8NI&feature=related) game (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WEPxYC7Bi6A&feature=related): Scurge (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NimvdcyCOu4&feature=related): Hive (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1yZ8fxAHM-U&feature=related) *Ahem* (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qPxVw6uvou0&feature=related) (Sorry, but I couldn't find any OSTs. The best I can do is try to make a recording the music from my game cartridge)

Also, perhaps we should make a list of all the referenced boss music that everyone has mentioned so far; that way remixers who haven't yet decided will have an easier time looking for choices. Sort of like compile everything that's been mentioned and put it in one post (I can do if you want).

If I ever find the time (or the motivation) I'll metal this one (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qET8hnuZiPw) up or something.

And if not me, then someone should.

Also, just to show I'm not just a big talker and can actually make music, here (http://compo.thasauce.net/files/Epitaph_-_holy_shit(OHC036).mp3) is my recent submission for starla's one hour compo. Sounds ugly but that can be fixed with a little work.

The tracklist is nice so far ... but it needs more monsters of the pocket variety. Might I suggest "Battle With Dialga (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sGb24JgBHyw)"? It's possibly the best Pokemon battle song ever (that I've listened to). There's a few remixes on Youtube, but none are Totally Rockin'. I can easily see it done in an Apocalyptica style, four cellos just pounding away ...

Anyhow. There's a midi in a request thread (http://www.vgmusic.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=12026) on VGmusic if anyone's interested.

Again, thanks for the reqests but it's really no use. The remixers choose which boss theme they want to do. If you have a request, find a remixer to do it for you. Don't want to sound harsh, but it's ultimately up to the remixer to decide which track he or she wants to remix

Oh, no worries. Just putting it out there in case it catches anyone's interest. Noticed some of them hadn't selected a song yet, and would rather make a bit of a fool of myself for putting it on the table to see if they'll even sniff at it than pass up the slim, slim chance to hear a boss tune I actually enjoy on its own. Nope, YOU should still do it :P

Anyway, good to have you back leepmeister! Your (nearly-finished?) Bowser theme from CtC sounded great (still have it on my hard drive). As for themes that do well with choir work, how about the final battle with Lavos (from CT), or the Master Hand theme (Final Destination) from Super Smash brothers Brawl?

Man i wish i could contribute to this music wise, but i suck at remixing (Although artistic wise is a different story) But anyways, there is one boss theme in particular i'd like to see done on this project, if anyone would be willing to do it. Ludwig Von Tokkentakers Big top/Final Boss theme from Carnevil.

This game gave me nightmares like you wouldn't believe...and i'm not even afraid of clowns.
I think it'd make for an awesome dark orchestral remix, just a suggestion. I'm shocked there isn't a single remix from this game. Plus I think the concept of an undead ringmaster bent on world domination is a badass thing by itself, true to the project.

How did I not see this sooner!?

Okay, so I don't really have a remixing setup that's 100% solid yet, meaning I'm not sure when I'll be able to contribute, but I will say this...

I would LOVE to see a remix of some of the "boss"-ish tracks from the ORIGINAL Super Smash Bros.; Those tracks were vastly underappreciated, since for whatever reason Nintendo/HAL went mostly towards epic orchestral(-ish) in Melee and Brawl.

Some links:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MhaFtROR28E&feature=related (Metal Mario)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kycvllk74NU&feature=related (Polygon Team)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WyogowO4VW8&feature=related (Master Hand)

I'd love to contribute to a rocking rendition of any of these. I play bass, though it's anybody's guess whether it'll be of a decent quality or not.

Oh, idea. Would anyone be up for trying to take the Master Hand theme and adding original lyrics to it? I had some ideas in my head earlier, but nothing's sticking together. I just want to get this out there so that I've committed the idea to "paper" (work with me here) and hopefully won't forget.

Feel free to PM me with any thoughts, unless it's along the lines of directly contributing to these ideas. I don't want this thread flooded with fruitless discussion along these lines :-)

Oh, and before I forget: Props to The Joker and whoever your predecessor was for conceiving of this idea; it's absolutely brilliant. I hope this succeeds!

You know, I've thought the exact same thing. On the other hand though, it's quite awesome as it is.

But would it be as BadAssed? Probably, but that's beside the point.

I'm not sure I'll be able to deliver on this, and you can thank FL studio for a botched product. I have had so many problems with FL8 files loading into FL9, I'm pretty thoroughly disgusted with Image-Line at the present moment. At this exact moment, I am 100% unsuccessful at even opening my project at all. I started it in FL 8.5 (which can no longer be used) so it won't load in FL8, and it's definitely not loading in 9, despite running the diagnostic/recovery tool on it about 20 different ways.

*EDIT*

There's hope after all. After spending about 2 hours trying every possible work around, I've managed to recover the project. Whew. Man, nothing will get a musician more furious than not being able to access past work. :)

Expanding the term 'boss music' a little, but would you accept remixes of 'boss stage' tracks from Bemani? AFAIK there's only a really small amount of Bemani Extra/Encore stage tracks that are licences.

It's ok with me, but Jokey has the final say

Alright so I've been a bit behind but due to free time for a while, I should be able to come up with a shiny new Eternal Darkness WiP today or tomorrow because I've ditched the old software, drums and rig for a far better one. I've come up with an intro recently that I think you'll all enjoy, so as soon as I get the new WiP up I'll bump my thread. :)
