View Full Version : Soundtracks you didn't know were stolen

This is a pretty interesting article that lists a bunch of songs from video games that sound similar or are blatantly ripped off from other songs.
I never even thought to notice the Guns N' Roses relation with Mega Man X 5, lol.
There are a lot that involve Earthbound.

Ok, that article made two fatal mistakes:
1. It killed my ISP and made me restart.
2. Failed with a capital PH to mention Elec Man Stage and R.E.M. "All The Right Friends"

I can't read the article (firewalled here) but two Earthbound songs I remember off the top of my head are the drug store music (When I'm Sixty-Four) and the game over music (Livin' on the Edge).

This topic came to mind when I started replaying Etrian Odyssey earlier tonight. Every time I hear the Pub theme:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h6C9hM6Daos
I think of this old Faye Wong song:
http://www.karaoo.com/video/1485/王菲-Faye-Wong--可爱眼睛
Not so close that I'd call it stolen or anything, but there it is. (Actually, I understand that the Faye Wong song is itself a cover of something else.)
I always thought the Ken Theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C66x4KzyDTs) from street fighter 2 was somehow related to Top Gun - Mighty Wings (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bnzl8Bwwc9M)

Bahahaha, that lame filter?! That was what they used at my school (well, when I went to school). I still remember the time it blocked ocr under "religious cult" or something.

Hahaha, my old high school never did anything like that.
Back before I even got Roadrunner, I would get on OCR from school and download some of the MP3s (this was also before I knew of torrenting) of Project Chaos and Rise of the Star every day, and any other things on the site that interested me.

The fact that it reminds me of Mighty wings is the main reason i love the Ken theme. I mean, if you are gonna bite a riff, might as well take one of the best. :-)

Why would I use a browser that plays my gifs too slowly (last time I checked, both use a down throttling setup like IE does)? Besides, it has something to do with FireFox 3. Various interactive things simply don't work, like the play buttons on that site, or the newer interactive radar on weather.com. They work fine on the final versions of FireFox 2, so I just downgraded.

I've noticed a lot of the time when people say "this song ripped off this one" that's normally the case, the similarity is so superficial that sometimes it's hard to actually pick it out.

People tend to confuse "meshes well with" and "ripped off from" when it comes to music on the Internet.

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAA Matthew Bellamy has said Bliss is his favourite song because it's got all these 80s arpeggios and keyboards on it which remind me of some music I heard on some children’s music programme when I was five. I think I ripped it off that. And that reminds me of when I was a bit simpler, a bit more of a pleasant state.[1] Thanks wikipedia, I wonder if Mathhew Bellamy played top gear.

For someone who made such a lofty introduction on the newbie board, this is a rather mundane post...however, I found it interesting, perhaps you will as well:
I noticed a rather eerie similarity between the songs for Buoy Base Galaxy from Super Mario Galaxy:
http://www.vgmusic.com/music/console/nintendo/wii/supermariogalaxy-floaterlandXGv1.mid
and the Crimean Army Sortie from SSBB/Fire Emblem:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TPsXPAc_k5k&feature=PlayList&p=11C96F1C0DD828C8&index=5
For Buoy Base, the similar bit starts at around 00:50, and in Crimean Army Sortie it starts after the intro, or at 00:14.
The two melodies are nearly the same. Do they share the same composer? (the SMG one was composed by Mahito Yokota, according to my soundtrack; I have no idea who composed the Crimean Army Sortie or its original form)
Thoughts? Ideas?

I may get laugh for this but I think KOF '98 intro song (the riff) stole the riff to Aerosmith's "Walk this Way"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fVxBm3dy0XY (King of Fighters '98)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ORAvMk-iXec (Walk this Way)
Also, apparently the reason the song "Singing Mountain" from Chrono Trigger SNES was removed from the game is due to the composer was inspired by "Castle in the Sky" main theme but didn't wanted to be call a thief. So I heard.
Singing Mountain:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=94F6pNTS7Nw
Castle in the Sky Theme:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cLFXX-uT0AQ
Which is not shocking seeing Chrono Trigger's Zeal Era (forgot what was the actual year) is inspired by that movie.
I do believe Micheal Jackson composed the score for Sonic 3 seeing he was a huge Sonic fan.
