View Full Version : Freshly Baked ReMixer Challenge 2009 (It's OVER!! More details coming soon...)

The History:
Way back in 2002 a forum user name "I Like Cookies!" (now just Jeff), ran a 1-shot competition called the Freshly Baked ReMixer challenge. In the thread artists signed up and were assigned challenges posted by other forum users. This is how artists like myself, Suzumebachi, and GLL all got our starts. There were also some other impressive tracks by Disco Dan and a few others.
Some time later the same user did the Second Annual FBRC which, while not as popular as the first one, still saw some solid success.
Since the competition has long been forgotten by most, and seeing all the talent that's on OCReMix today, I think it's time we try a revival.
The Premise:
As stated above the idea of the competition is for forum users to challenge remixers to remixes of songs/games they request. The remixer than has a predetermined amount of time to produce a remix of said material.
The Plan:
Previously everyone just winged it, and sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't. I've been tossing around in my head a new system that should make the situation better for everyone...
Mixers:
Phase 1 will be mixer sign-up. It will last until next Saturday, and ANYONE wishing to enter may. Be it an established artist or not. Any and all are welcome, and encouraged to enter.
The Challenges:
Following Phase 1, there will be a 1 week period where any forum user can submit challenges. Be it from a game, or a specific song. Challengers MUST include a source tune for reference and ALL CHALLENGERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO NOT PICK SONGS THAT'RE TOO OBSCURE . This is merely a suggestion as the easier it is for a remixer to get a midi, or familiarity with a song, the more likely the finished project will be a quality piece of work. During Phase 2 each user is only allowed 1 challenge. ReMixers already in the challenge are allowed to issue challenges themselves. I reserve the right to reject certain requests.
PLEASE NOTE: To ensure that this year people don't see ANOTHER song that COULD HAVE BEEN challenged, this year all challenges will be made PRIVATELY. More details when Phase 2 goes live.
The Match-Ups:
Once we populate a list of mixers and challenges, a script be created and will distribute the songs to each mixer. There will a few days grace period while we sort everything out, and following that mixers will have 2 months to finish their challenge. In the event that there are more challenges than mixers (which is likely) if a mixer successfully finishes their challenge (COMPLETED a QUALITY remix) then they are free to once again randomly select another song from the pool. The only stipulation is remixers CAN NOT be selected to remix a song THEY requested as a challenge.
PLEASE NOTE: This challenge is meant to be just that. A CHALLENGE. Last year there were a LOT of people trying to switch the song that they got because they didn't like it. I realize personal preference plays a big part of the creative process, and I do truly believe that you should make music for yourself before anything else, this is a CHALLENGE. By entering this competition you are signing up for, and agree to be challenged. This will include working under strict time constraints and may also mean having to mix something you don't necessarily like. If you choose to not accept your challenge, then you fail the challenge, and I will not be babying every person who wants to swap their challenge. We WILL have some wiggle room, but not nearly as much as we had last year.
Winning:
There will be NO voting. This contest is specifically for remixers to test their abilities as a mixer, and to give users a chance to get their favorite under-remixed song finally mixed. Everyone who completes a quality product is a winner, and every listener wins as well.
Current Status:
Phase 1 (Mixer Sign-Up, NO REQUESTS): Sunday, May 31st - Saturday, June 6th, 23:59PM EST
Phase 2 (Song requests: Sunday June 7th - Saturday, June 13th, 23:59 EST
1 Week Break to send out / confirm mixers and challenges
Phase 3 (Mixing stage):Sunday June 21st - Saturday, August 22nd, 23:59 EST
Phase III: Mixing
The mixing matches for stage 3 can be found here (http://wiki.thasauce.net/index.php?title=Freshly_Baked_ReMixer_Challenge#Th e_Match-Ups). At this time artists are UNABLE to re-roll their mixes other than otherwise stated here (http://www.ocremix.org/forums/showpost.php?p=378202&postcount=427). You have until August 22nd to complete a polished piece of work. If you finish early and want another mix details are here (http://www.ocremix.org/forums/showpost.php?p=378202&postcount=427) and here (http://www.ocremix.org/forums/showpost.php?p=377791&postcount=404).
When your mix is complete it will need to be uploaded to Compo:ThaSauce (http://compo.thasauce.net/compos/view/FBRC). This WILL require you to have an account on ThaSauce, and will AUTOMATICALLY LOCK once the mixing stage is over.
You are free to post WIPs of your mixes in this thread, but please do not upload anything but your FINAL WORK to the Compo page.
PLEASE NOTE: Mixer sign-ups AND song requests WILL BOTH BE HANDLED IN THIS THREAD.

I'd love to try this, but I have an ambient album to complete, two books to try and fanagle into publishing, plus work on the SD3 remix album on top of life itself. I will literally die of music if I tried. :)
Sounds like fun though and I'll definitely be watching how it turns out.

And everyone still did it at the last minute.
And by "everyone," I mean "I."
I STILL haven't finished my revised version of last year's entry (http://jmr.sitesled.com/qfgdrefix_28.mp3) (as sad as that is).
Real life has been kicking my ass lately, and it's been reallly difficult to find quiet time to re-record the last few guitar parts.

Right now it's looking summer long-ish. Mixing stage starting around the end of May/beginning of June, and concluding around mid-August.
So 2 1/2 monthes.
I flaked on this hardcore last year, and i'd love to flake on it again this year! :3

Phase 1 is now LIVE until Saturday at 23:59 EST.
Please be sure to read the (quasi-) updated main post, as this year I have made adjustments.
The MAIN adjustments are these:
1. All challenges will be made IN PRIVATE this year. Last year, since the challenges were PUBLIC, a lot of people ending up rejecting their challenges because they saw another song that had been challenged and wanted to try to re-roll so that could get it.
Which leads to...
2. There won't be NEARLY as many re-rolls available this year. I want as many people to finish as they can, but this is meant to be a challenge. If you can't mix the songs you are given, then you are OUT of the challenge. It seems a bit harsh, but last year I had to do a LOT of extra work for people that didn't get their mixes done anyway. We will be working with everyone to do what we can to make the process as fair as possible, but we are NOT going to be holding your hands so that you get that super easy song you wanted to mix anyway.
I will be going through the first few pages of the list and populating the the mixers involved, uless anyone wants to back out now. Otherwise just reply here and I'll you added when I can.

Everyone will get a PM of the match-ups, and the first post will be updated to reflect (probably an article on ThaWiki too) assuming it's possible.
There might be an optional progress report thing (where you can upload/post your WIPs every 2 weeks so people can see how far along you are) that there will probably be PMs for if we decide to do that

PM all requests to starla.
She is in charge of them.
Each person is limited to 1 request. I have reserve the right to reject any request that's too ridiculous (remember to make your request within the realm of possibility. Some stuff just isn't going to happen).
Each request needs at least a link to 1 source. Be it YouTube, GrooveShark, a hosted MP3, or a Midi file. If you're source IS a midi file, a link to one of the OTHER types in addition to midi would be preferred.
PLEASE NOTE:
Me and starla are current in an internet outage. If you don't hear anything back from either of us in the next 2 days. DON'T FREAK OUT. We'll be around when we can be, and we should be back on our feet 100% by Tuesday at the very latest.

Yup, I've got a challenge up - I really hope someone gets it, as it's a un-remixed classic (I hate it when good music goes unnoticed in the remixing community...).
Phase 3's gonna be awesome :).
Question, though - Are we going to know who sent the challenges, or are the challenges going to be from 'anonymous'? It would be interesting if we knew who we were remixing for .

Not a problem. I'll put both of you down. I can keep taking remixers through the remainder of this week if anyone wants to sign up still, but after this week I can't take anyone else.
The phase break up is really just to keep things organized. Not necessarily a hard deadline until Phase 2 is over.
Also: We're at about 20 or so challenges so make sure to keep those comin' :o
starla
06-10-2009, 08:35 PM
I've gotten 20 challenges so far, keep them coming! We need about twice as many for the next phase. Keep in mind you don't have to be a remixer to submit a challenge, and this may be your chance to get that one song you've wanted to hear remixed for a while into the hands of an able and willing remixer...

This may seem like a stupid question, but then, that works for me.
Can ReMixers themselves submit challenges as long as they themselves don't get them? Because I have a couple good ideas floating around, and don't want them turned down simply because I'm already doing some ReMixing. :D

Anyone can submit a challenge, including remixers in the challenge, and people who AREN'T remixers in the challenge. The only real rule is a remixer can't get what he challenged.

Once I get all the requests, I'll be doing my best to sort them so that each person gets at least a Youtube link, original sound file and mp3 wherever possible. If the requester fails to provide any of those, I can't guarantee that the right song from the soundtrack will be understood and given to the remixer. There's a bit of sorting to do, the more sources your are able to provide the better. Some people were even kind enough to find several sources and provide them all in a zip (<3). We'll end up hosting anything that is on a megaupload or other file sharing host on Thasauce proper. My goal is to get the best possible sources to the remixers so they can begin work straight away with no confusion as to what song they're mixing.

I must say I am pretty pumped about this. I have 2 mixes in the works and am excited at the thought of doing a song someone else wants to hear. It is the type of exercise that can stretch you creatively, make you better. I'm too lazy to get better on my own, for the most part. I hadn't thought of this until just now, but a lot of people are working on more than one mix at a time. If we're already remixing the song that we get from this competition, do we just use the one we're already making, make a new one, request a different challenge, what?
Gario

I think it would be reasonable to request another challenge, as it wouldn't necessarily be a 'challenge' if your already working on it.

I'd prefer no one talks about it until after Sunday. Because I don't want people knowing what songs might still be available for re-roll and making them want to try to roll again.
After Sunday all the active challenges will be posted. And I can tell you right now: There aren't many left for re-roll.
ALSO: I apologize in advance if anyone's challenge didn't get picked up. We try to oversaturate the list so there's a bit of diversity and extras in case anyone completes theres and wants another.
So if you don't see your challenge picked up on Sunday, know that it still might go out.

We had a break period to send out challenges and get re-rolls from people who needed them. But now that's done. The break period was supposed to be over by the 21st anyway, but it was delayed due to problems sending out challenges/re-rolls thanks to internet outages. Vegeroth and myself are Canadian, and we're metal remixers, but I don't know of any other Canadians 'round hurr.
You can add me to that list. And the stereotype. I do other styles as well, but if I remix a song in my head its usually metal... 8-)
BYW, since the mixing stage is open, can we divulge which songs we each rolled? Will the matchups be posted at all? I am interested in seeing who got my requests.

Haha, the first possible remix that came to mind when I heard my source tune was - you guessed it - a metal remix. But I don't think I have the production skill nor the samples/plugins to pull it off, so I'm doing another style (sort of).

BTW just wanted to let everyone know, now that all the challenges are locked, you can talk about your songs :)
There's going to be an optional quaterly progress report for anyone that wants to post their WIP that will be handled on Compo:ThaSauce. I'll give more info on that when it's availible.
The deadline WILL be extended but don't count it it being much more than a few days. Again more info on that when it becomes availible.
Edit: First page updated to include all the matchups for your viewing pleasure. :)

I don't intend to, but be willing to show some grace if I take it a direction other than you might've had in mind... unless, I do in fact go the direction you have in mind, in which case my comment would not matter... unless, the act of commenting on the matter changes the parameters of the universe in a manner which allows for the completion of the challenge... unless, this is pretty much bullshit by now and I'm just going to go ahead and do what I was originally going to do anyway and forget this conversation ever took place... unless, you talk and I have to kill you... in your sleep... unless, you're awake and I have to kill you while you're walking around or something... unless...

I'm responsible for both of those tracks, Tallon Overworld 2, and the Snowboard Kids track. mwahaha. I'm really looking forward to hear what they sound like!
Likewise, I'm curious who requested the Chocobo Theme. I have a concept track down I might post soon just to get some ideas on where to go with it from there. I have high hopes!

Whoever gave me Toxic Caves better be ready for the cheesiest, silliest house track ever made.
I don't intend to, but be willing to show some grace if I take it a direction other than you might've had in mind... Do whatever you want with it. One of the reasons I requested it was I felt it could be taken in a bunch of different directions.
my guess would be F4T4LThat would be kinda funny, as I ended up with his request last year too... I'll have to ask him.

This is gonna take me a while, 'cause all of my recording software (all 4 programs) don't detect any form of input anymore. My ASIO4ALL driver works fine in FL Studio, but I don't use that to record, so it's useless to me. The ASIO4ALL driver is the problem in the other software (it shows all of the inputs, but doesn't show the active/inactive buttons so I can't turn them on). I need to investigate this further, because I've been SPAZZING for a week and a half now.
I'm waiting to receive KOMPLETE 5 in the mail and then I will definitely be ready for that Toe Jam & Earl 2 track, Fishy ;)

I haven't tried for very long yet, but I'm having a tough time composing in Fruityloops. Does anyone know of a FREE midi program that can show more than one instrument/part at once (preferably with musical notes instead of a "piano roll"?)
Should I ask this in the help/newbies section?

I don't think it can do multiple parts visible at once, but Anvil Studio will show you two staffs per instrument, which is customizable what range the staffs are in. (Here (http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t14/lorenith/anvilex.png)'s an example for you)
It's free for the most part (and when I say that I mean you can do anything with it for free, but there's stuff you can pay for I've just never used any of it) you can drag and drop notes as you please, or input notes with a keyboard (or guitar I think...). If you want any help pm me or something I guess lol.

actually in the piano roll of FL you can view multiple parts at once...hit alt+v while viewing the piano roll. it's not notation as you're asking though.

In other news, I may not be able to complete this. My school has a weird scheduling system where you focus on one class per month, but you don't know what it's going to be until a few days before. Long story short, I'm in one of the most intensive, time-consuming classes the school offers this month, and if next month is what I think it'll be... well that will be pretty busy too.
Still gonna try to get this song done, but I'm not getting my hopes up. :-(

I've been busy cleaning/preparing for Suzu and Shael to arrive. I plan to open up the Compo:ThaSauce system for a little while for people to upload WIPS every few weeks. You'll probably get about 3 revisions, and have about a 3 day window to upload them before the actually finished product at the end.
This will give everyone a chance to post their WIPs.
This is totally optional, too btw,

Hmm, no wonder I'm having so much trouble with my remix - I got one of the worst songs on the entire Tyrian soundtrack  It's certainly a challenge... I'm thinking I should just try making an original song, and then sticking the 3-4 seconds of Tyrian melody in there. Trying to remix the repetitive intro/bassline has gotten me nowhere.
The Alt-V in Fruity Loops certainly does help though ^_^
