I mean, you're a good guy on a pretty shitty mission, then you have your gf having her worst hormone-filled drama day on your ear. Then you have otacon weeping about how he couldn't knock up his sister, in the middle of a world-threatening crisis.

Then you have his sister which is as annoying as can be, and you have to carry the little bastard around. You have crazy-ass bad guys who are out to get you, not before telling you the story of their lives which you couldn't care less about because there's a frigging bomb about to explode here. The only decent guy you meet (snake) doesn't show up as much as you would like, and the mission changes objectives faster than Otacon fapping to his sister's panties.

The least you could do is whine, and I didn't find the guy THAT whiny. I think people didn't like him because they were expecting a badass snake to play with, and got a guy that looks like a girl and has no idea of what's going on.

But Raiden is perhaps one of the most real characters you can find on the game's story that actually acts accordingly to what's going on around him.

Needless to say, I'm ok with a MGS5 starring Raiden, bring it on.

Actually it was ZOE1 that had the demo. ZOE games are basically giant robo games with really streamlined controls and fast, fluid combat. Loads of fun. Get ZOE2!

I remember my friend got ZOE1 just for the MGS2 demo. The first time we started up the game and saw the opening video it blew us away. It was so damn fast and fluid. Instantly fell in love with it.

I still think ZOE1 had better multiplayer than 2. The second game's multiplayer felt too slow compared to original.

Okay, so I don't usually fanboy over-analyze teaser pictures, but tonight I am. I'm taking a look at the Famitsu scans... the one with Raiden and Big Boss on it.

Raiden's eyes are blue in MGS4, but they're brown in the scans. Maybe its the lighting. Maybe its a retcon.

Just saying. Maybe it's not Raiden? Maybe its Frank Jaeger.

Probably too far of a stretch, but it'd be kind of cool if Raiden was some kind of derivative of Gray Fox/Null/Frank Jaeger.

On another note, anyone here excited about the last news from the long-running Metal Gear Philantropy?
For those who do not know, they're a bunch of nice italians fellas, making a low-budget fan-made MGS movie.
Movie that already made hollywood look like a bunch of sissies. You can see evidence of that here (http://www.vimeo.com/943725).

So now they're in the middle of post-production, chillin' and editing the titles.
While out of the blue, they got Aoife Ferry, singer of "The Best is yet to Come" from MGS1 to actually sing their ending theme (http://www.hivedivision.net/site/index.php?blog/show/MGS-Philanthropy-Ending-Theme.html).
Fan-Made-Project get the singer from the real game ...How fucking awesome is that? :shock:

Raiden's parents are killed by Solidus in the 1980s, and I didn't really think about it, but Raiden is adopted by Solidus, very similarly to the way that Frank Jaeger adopted Naomi after killing her parents. I think there are a lot of parallels that can bolster the Raiden/Gray Fox connection (I mean, while leaving out the obvious "they're both tech enhanced ninjas DUH" argument). I wonder if there are more parallels to these two characters...

So if Raiden is a kid in the 1980s. Null is a teenager in the 1970s. Frank would be... in his late 20s/early 30s by the time Raiden was born, which means he could lineup by either being a direct child of Gray Fox (which is probably unlikely) or being some kind of clone, which is probably what went down. Makes sense, and keeps that series' theme of cloning alive.

That pic of Raiden/whoever with the black bandana over his eye makes the character look even more bad ass. Anyway, I like this Gray Fox/Raiden connection. If that's not how it is, I will be sad.

I think that being Gray Fox is grasping for straws. It's Raiden without a doubt.

Here's my guess. It's a two time period parallel story. One takes place in the present (either pre-MGS4 or post...though latter makes less sense.) with Raiden, and the other takes place in the 70s and 80s with Big Boss in his prime. And somehow the two different stories will connect with eachother.

I figure if Raiden spent the time between 2 and 4 going deep to uncover the Patriots (and save Sunny...which is the last loading symbol too.) to the point he even starts working with Eva, that's probably as good a time as any to flash back to BB's time to actually see how the real Patriots rolled...along with everything Eva talks about in 4.

That's my guess for now. I gotta say if it is that, between seeing the Patriots/Fox Unit's falling out...and Raiden's eventual fate to be mutilated into a cybernetic body, that's gonna be a very depressing game.

And yeah, I wanted ZOE3 more too. I dunno, I love Metal Gear but I feel like it's just too soon. But yeah, Raiden does look pretty awesome with the bandage over his eye.

I moreso meant the story line from Metal Gear 1 to Metal Gear Solid, since Ive never played those games so im not sure exactly when gray fox turns all cyborg and shizz. And I assume Big boss is still alive after metal gear 2, so this is why my theory places the game after metal gear 2 but before metal gear solid.

The plot isn't THAT hard to follow, at least timeline-wise.

Patriots are formed sometime during the early 20th century(or maybe before that, I forget).
The Boss and her Cobra Team help the allies(specifically the U.S.) dominate the second World War. Jack(Big Boss) is born around the 30's, and shortly after WWII, begins training under The Boss.
EVA is born in China and is raised and trained to be an agent of the communist government of said country. ADAM(Revolver ocelot) is born somewhere in the U.S and later joins some kind of special forces unit under command of the President.
The Events of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater begin.
The Boss "defects" to the soviet union after The Virtuous Mission goes sour.
Some time passes
Operation "Snake Eater" begins, Snake meets EVA who is disguised as a U.S. sleeper agent, and runs into Ocelot, all the while unaware that he is working as ADAM under orders of the U.S. President.
The Boss' true role is revealed as the events of Snake Eater end.
Snake is now "Big Boss"
*Shit happens in Portable Ops*(didn't play it)
The "L'enfant Terible" project begins, Solid, Liquid, and Solidus(and Plasma :-P) are "born": Begin military training shortly there after.

Everything is covered in at least four layers of bullshit at all times, and digging through it is enough to drive strong men mad.

He does have the same hair, similar face, and it looks like the same cyborg suit with minor differences. Actually when you filter out the extra meat, MGS' story isn't that hard.
Well, that's sort of my point. The events themselves are pretty straight forward (even if it's easy to get bogged down in the details), but the way they're presented (out of order and through multiple layers of bullshit and general WTFery) make the entire thing just a giant clusterfuck.

Ironic as hell for the whole "a strong man makes his own destiny" thing, the entire Metal Gear franchise is basically about the main character getting lead around by the nose by someone smarter, more powerful, and better connected than he is. And half the time, once they figure that out, they go ahead and do what the other guy wants them to anyway.

Well, actually Gray Fox isn't necessarily shown in much detail... the hair color, eye color, bandaged eye all match up to Jaeger. And Frank Jaeger wasn't exactly what I'd call overly masculine... there was never enough detail to really pin down exactly what he looked like as only bits and pieces of his face are shown in any of the games. Sure, there were Codec images back on the MSX, but the character design could very well be modified to fit in a new Gray Fox situation just based on how the other characters designs have changed and evolved over time... hell, Snake has looked different quite a few times since the original Metal Gear.

Null had his face covered up... but now that I've googled his images and am taking a much closer look, he really could fit the bill if Kojima wanted him to be a pre-Raiden... he's not THAT much more masculine than Raiden, and his concept art (and codec pics) from older games could very well resemble this current "Raiden" teaser pic... again, if Kojima wanted it to.

Hell, who knows at this point. This is all just my untrained eye, but looking at the design though of this new teaser art, the screws imply a rudimentary form of exoskeleton, especially when compared to Raiden's suit in MGS4. in MGS4 Raiden's skin is scarred and stitched looking, while this possible Gray Fox seems a little more harshly assembled. Hell, he has a tattooed barcode on his face... surely with nanomachine tech they could keep track of this guy that way. I wouldn't be surprised if Gray Fox is originally put in some kind of prototype exoskeleton of the one that Raiden has in MGS4... except *SPOILER* at the end of MGS4 when Raiden is reassembled and human again */SPOILeR*. Maybe Gray Fox's exoskeleton fails and couldn't be repaired at the time due to technology limitations and they opted to go with more of a cyborg body... the MGS1 Gray Fox, cyborg ninja we all know and love.

I'm pretty sure it's not a vanilla Raiden though. Maybe its Raiden's son? Maybe Sunny and Raiden's son's son.

I say the PSX game no question. I have Twin Snakes, and it's an okay game, but it just feels wrong. Just get the PSX game. In fact, get that MGS 3-pack they've been selling, it comes with the PSX game.

If I were you, I'd just read up a FAQ on the plot of Metal Gear, Metal Gear 2, and Metal Gear Solid 2.

You should definitely play through the PSX version of Metal Gear Solid, as even though Twin Snakes was visually impressive, it pretty much killed the feel of the original with too much over-the-top wire fu, bullet time, and lame techno. Metal Gear Solid 3 is a definite recommendation from me as it took the great visuals of MGS2 but didn't overwhelm itself with way too many cutscenes and repetitive environments. I haven't played MGS4: Guns of The Patriots yet, but everyone says it's beyond amazing, however I keep hearing about an hour and a half long end cutscene which sounds pretty bad to me. I never played the PSP games so I can't comment. Try 'em if you're feeling bold I guess.

An honorable mention would be Metal Gear Solid: Ghost Babel(just Metal Gear Solid in the U.S.) for the Gameboy Color. I never got that far, but for a Gameboy game it felt like a competent portable 8-Bit MGS. I don't think it fits into the actual MGS storyline anywhere though.

Portable Ops (and PO Plus)....are....fun....but no story at all.....its the core gameplay with out the cutscenes, both AC!D's are also fun if you like card games mixed with final fantasy tactics. The story is more of an side story spin off than what would be considered "canon"

If you want to actually make some sense out of the story, play it Metal Gear Solid 3, Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid 2, then Metal Gear Solid 4. If you want to get the WTFery the rest of us did, then play them in order.

Also note that each game (except MGS4) has an upgraded rereleased version. MGS1 has Twin Snakes (for the Gamecube instead of PS1), MGS2 has Substance, MGS3 has Subsistence. There's basically no reason not to go for the upgrade except that the original versions are probably cheaper. Substance/Subsistence are relatively minor tweaks, but Twin Snakes completely upgrades the engine and adds in cutscenes and stuff.

I have no idea where Portable Ops or Acid or any of the spinoffs fit into the timeline, but the original Metal Gear (and the noncanon Metal Gear 2: Snake's Revenge) are between MGS3 and MGS1. MGS1 does a pretty decent job of recapping the important bits, though.

Just wanted to clarify that both NES Metal Gear games are both not canon. Acid is also not canon.

Portable Ops is canon and comes shortly after MGS3.

We already know there's a new MGS coming for PSP as mentioned in the leaked episode of Qore for the PSP GO. I was hoping all along that this kojipro website tease wasn't for just a PSP game. If this tease turns out for just a PSP game I will be so disappointed. I think the art they used to tease it (the big boss face/ninja and mask) are all way too high res for a console game. It is just art though...I'm nervous about some kind of microsoft MGS exclusivity deal, I do own a 360 but it's out of warranty and barely used at this point.
