Well, i've scrapped Frog's intervention, and started over again. I hope you enjoy this different take, the piano part is the same as before, but everything else has changed. I tried to give it a more sinister/battle feel. It'll get more heroic later on :) I'm going to try and use a bit of leitmotif kind of like in my schala piece, making use of different themes etc.
Enjoy! oh yeah, and the 1 minute of silence at the beginning :(

Its called 'Frogs Theme -Chrono Trigger OST' halfway down the page.

Frogs Intervention - Finished.
Obviously, i'll take into account the feedback i get from VGmix, and improve the track if it needs improving.
I hope you guys dont mind me putting it up over at VGmix, i feel that with the feedback i'll get, the album version will be significantly better/different.

The trumpet triplets from around 3:00 to the end are too soft. I really wish I could hear more of the trumpets getting the main tune around 3:20. I don't like the switch to different instruments at 3:31, it should stay strong with the trumpets in my opinion. But its still a really good song.

Yeah, I'm getting concerned. I haven't seen Claado on AIM lately. As an absolute last resort, I can commandeer the project, but I'm still unsure of my ability to solicit remixers.
Funny that I've known Eon_Blue on the net since 1998, though we didn't know it from 1999 to 2005. Ah, back on those ITW boards...

This is it, people...despite some personal issues and some late nights thinking, not working towards the ultimate goal, the project has bounced back. We're on our feet again, chugging onward. Music is coming our way in so many fashions I can't even begin to describe my excitement.
Let me just say this: WE'RE A SITE PROJECT!!!!!
But don't go getting all misbehaved on me...we're still looking at our larger picture here, which is completion of the project. And with this new boost of energy, let's try and make it last as long as possible. Some things to expect in the next few days:
1) custom lyrics written by me, translated to Japanese by Evilhead, and sung by pixietricks in two songs on the ST
2) new music by ellywu2, Russell Cox, and DarkeSword (at the least)
3) updates to the site and thread in general
4) a revamping (albeit slight) of our roster, and messages to all of our mixers
This is just a taste, people. It's all coming together, and once Chrono Symphonic is finished...there's no telling what we'll have really accomplished. Let's just enjoy the ride.

I might take a shot at the website, if that's alright. Anything special in mind? Also, what sections should there be on the site? Could be useful to know, for making the menu.
Claado Shou
05-27-2005, 04:30 PM
Well, I plan on the sidebar linking to the following sections:
-Main Page
-Remixes
-Remixers
-Project History
-Project Files
-Project Art
-Affiliates
Also, I want the design to be a mixture of real life and Chrono Trigger (no sprites or anything like that, something more realistic). The banner on the site now is a good example of this, if you can see what I mean by that.
Thanks for the offer. Just post whatever whenever.

Somebody did a pretty sick cover for this a while back. Was it you, SZ? It had part of the Earth in the corner, and a nice cosmos backdrop, and then this flaming comet thing (Lavos) flying toward the Earth. I liked it.

I think we established that this one was a little better. I prefer the text in the middle - I just need to clean up the stars in the background (so hemo doesn't have a fucking aneurysm), and maybe fix up the comet a little bit. I've still got the source files, so editing isn't a problem.
Haven't looked at this thread in a while actually, hope it starts building steam again - some (most) of the wips are GREAT.

Yeah, I forgot about everything in that paragraph. Sorry. BUT!...I can make up for it with some good news.
We're welcoming two new mixers to the project, both of them very well known - Daniel Baranowsky and GrayLightning. It's really cool, I know.
Also, several new songs are already ready for revealing, but we're waiting for some other things to fall into place really quickly before the big reveal sometime this next week, so just you wait.

We actually had someone named Soraya come by and ask for the song, but since I don't have any indication of what Soraya's music is like, and I remember vividly being stunned by yours, I think I can make you the mixer on that particular song.
So, lemme send you some stuff and have at it.
AAAAAALLLLLLLSSSSSSSOOOOOOOO...I'm thinking it would be best to only have one set of pictures for the CD art and CDs themselves, so I've put together what seems like a good setup.
CD Cover: Eon_Blue's Lavos picture with the logo in the center
CD Back: Kanjika's picture with the stopwatch on the table
CD Insert: Kanjika's picture with Frog and Crono in the rain
Now I just need some art for the first and second CDs, preferably something simple that just identifies the CDs as being Chrono Symphonic. Anything cool and aesthetically pleasing. Just post your stuff here, if you have any.

Just so everyone knows, the announcement and all will be made tonight at 10:00 P.M. ET (2200, since I'm in the Navy) and it will include, but not be limited to:
1) a brand new website designed and built by our beloved StarZander
2) the inclusion of pixietricks' vocals into two songs, ellywu2's "Schala and the Queen" and Reuben Kee's "To Far Away Times"
3) some new music from some old artists for your listening enjoyment
Just a little longer, people...just a little longer...

I was a few steps into making the site - I lost focus for a while there (on a lot of things, actually), and if StarZander's up to it, I don't mind handing things off to him. If things don't work out, I could probably pick up where I left off.
I'll be the backup website guy.
For now, I can stick to the front cover...
Any word on image size/dpi? I understand we want this sucker to look as good as possible, but is 300 dpi entirely necessary? Right now I think I've got it at 700 x 700 - a little small. I've started doing covers at 1000 x 1000 with 72 dpi for wips. I don't have a functioning printer at the moment - can anyone give feedback on how the cover looks printed out?

Ah, yes, very true. Very true. I will change that.
As for an instrumental version of Reuben's song, the old version was instrumental, and I'm sure somebody saved it and could upload it, but I'd rather not place it on the project website/webspace, considering it isn't something we're using. I personally deleted it and replaced it with the vocal-laden, much better version including pixietricks, so...can't help you there at the moment. Sorry.
Also, aside from art for the project and all, i would like it very much if people that like this project...how should I say..."pimp" it out on other websites, to boost awareness and all. That would be very cool, unlike my hesitation with the word "pimp". :)
Continue to enjoy.

I don't know if you're a professional vocalist or how long you've been singing, but I'll just throw out my impressions. Hope I don't offend anyone!
I found your performance in "Schala and the Queen" to be better than in "Far Away Times". Your accuracy is good, though you were a bit sharp on the high C a couple of times. Of course, that's above typical Soprano range so it's not uncommon for the pitch to waver around there. Your voice seems to be geared towards a high and clear tone, so make sure you sing strongly and from your stomach.
I also thought the vocal track could have been a bit louder so as not to be overshadowed by the piano, unless the artistic point of the track's volume was to signify the "far away" part.
Anyway, very nice work everyone is putting into this! It'll be a lovely finished product for sure.

I just listened to "To Far Away Times". I think that the vocals are fine, expect for the fact that I can't hear them very well above the piano most of the time. I personally think that the piano should be taken down a few notches. But all around, very nice to see that this project is nearing completion. I haven't checked up on it in a while and was quite pleased with what I found today.

In my original version of "To Far Away Times," the vocals were actually too loud. I may have overcompensated in bringing them down. I could play around with the levels some more, since you guys said it sounded a little *too* far away.
And in response to your comments, Soraya, yes, I'm a vocalist. I study classical at Peabody Conservatory. http://www.fayhaven.com ^_^
You said I sounded sharp in a couple places- which song was that for, and where? I'm not doubting you, just not sure where to look. Maybe I can go back and fix those places.
I didn't sing anything close to a high C in either song, though, so I'm not sure what you're referring to... Both pieces were in mezzo range- too *low* for me! A high C is well within soprano range. :D Perhaps you meant the C above middle C? And the correct advice would be to sing from the "diaphragm," not the stomach.
In any case, what I think you were trying to get at there was breath support. It's actually much *harder* for me to sing in this sort of style as opposed to classical. I have to make my voice airy-er and sing on straight tone. Without the vibrato, I lose a lot of support. So that could explain why I may have been sharp. Or it might have just been the huge-ass headphones I was wearing- couldn't really hear myself.
Anywho, I'll do my best to mix this stuff right. I want to free the listeners of burden, and straining to hear the vocal line is definitely burdensome.

I loooove the site. I do agree that the watch pic is a little lame compared to the clocks and sundials. But yes, very simple and clean design. Guess that's how he got the name? ^_^
Thank you. :D And yes, the watch was bothering even me :P So it's gone now. I wanted something to represent a more modern timepiece, but couldn't find anything good. And every time I saw that pic, I just hated it even more.
Yes, that is how I got my name. ;) It's what I try to do in all my websites. I don't like complicated stuff.
Also, I must agree with the others who pointed this out... Your singing in To Far Away Times is difficult to hear at times, so I'm hoping you will try to balance that a bit better. Don't want to miss out on your beautiful voice (I've been looping Schala And The Queen all day).
Great job so far, everyone!

Yes! Breath support was exactly what I was talking about. I said to sing using your stomach to indicate that using it would allow the vibrations to come into your lungs and give your voice a fuller, rounder tone without the use of vibrato. It was more or less a layman's term that I used, not knowing your experience with singing.
Now, I don't claim to be a vocal instructor, but I do know a few things from spending time with the professors at the institutions I've attended. My limited knowledge of the instrument has helped more than a few vocalists, but having heard your performances from the site you pointed me to (I enjoyed your performance of Handel's "Bel Piacere", very nice) I now see that you are certainly not in need of my rather rudimentary vocal instruction.
PS: I must also say that it's refreshing to hear a classical vocalist who does not make the mistake (or 'stylistic decision', as some say) of applying a ridiculous amount of vibrato to each and every note to achieve a 'large' tone by superficial means.

Hehehee... Yeah, I really don't like that kind of voice. Vibrato should carry the pitch and spin it out into the space you're singing in, not *distort* the pitch. Some people have such wide vibrato that you aren't even sure what note they're singing. But I don't mind meatier voices, as long as they are even and clear. I'm a coloratura, so my voice happens to be somewhat lighter.
Looks like this project will deliver the goods.

I would have to second that sometimes the vocals in "To Far Away Times" clashes with the excellent piano. Without the lyrics, I have sometime guessing the exact word. Not that it sounds bad, just, er, quite hard to make out.

I'm going to be away from my normal computer for a while (2, close to 3 weeks) so I won't have the option of using AIM anymore, which means that any files that need to be transferred or whatnot will have to be done through e-mail.

Well, that is definitely cool and aesthetically pleasing. Very nice indeed. And don't worry about having song names and all, that can be added later when we have everything complete.
Since the first disc is red and all, if you're designing the second one as well, could you please make it blue or green, to have an identifiable difference between the two? That would be really cool.
And as for PLBenjaminZ and his song, it's nice that you keep working on Denadoro Climb, but what about the Lavos battle? That song is already kickass, and now all you have to do is finish it.

Sorry... It's just that I've been working almost every night for the past two months, and I got all this school stuff to worry about too. I just happened to find myself with twenty minutes spare time to mess around with last night, and decided to work on the Wind Scene one because I could finish it in just twenty minutes.
Luckily for me, school's going to end in like three weeks, and I'm thinking about quitting my job (working at the movies sucks :( Hi! How can I help you? You'd like a medium popcorn? Are you sure you wouldn't like a large popcorn? It's only 510 dollars more and you get free refills with it! Sure no problem! Would you like butter with that? In the middle and on top? Here you go! Would you like anything else so I can attempt to upsell that too despite the outrageous prices and smile while I try to rip you off? Hey, I just work here. :( ), so that'll free up a lot of my time. :P
I'm working on the Lavo's one too, but I don't plan on posting it until I at least complete the time constraint. There are so many things I want to do with it, but I can't encorporate all the ideas into whatever the time constraint was... I'll definitely get around to finishing it in the not-so-distant future. Again, sorry for the delay.

Also, I just had a great idea, Flame Stealer. For the second CD, use the same image as the one for the first, but flip it around so it's a mirror-image of the other, invert the color (green and white), and then place the title on it as a mirror-image of the other (one is aligned to the left, the other would be aligned to the right, etc.) That would be awesome, dude. Thanks.

Okie dokie, guys and gals. I fixed up the voice/piano balance on "To Far Away Times." Emailing it to Claado, so should be up soon as he gets to it. I turned down the piano, but mixed the overall track so it would still be the same volume as the one before.

First of all, well done for shaping this project up over the past year-ish or so. I've got keen interest in seeing what will come out of it, especially with the slew of mixers on board. :) I wish all mixers the best of luck with what they do.
Also, you think it's right that I drop some light critique for Ben's track here before it gets uploaded? Or is he unable to access it again?
Speaking of critique, I hope to offer some last minute pointers to some of the tracks in the making if needed. Yes, I know i'm meant to be doing that sort of thing at VGMix, but from what i heard from a few people I know, OCR needs me more than them.
Again, best of luck for getting the project secured :D

Is there any chance, LatentSanity, that you could take your picture of Crono and fade it into Flame Stealer's disc design? And Flame Stealer, is there any chance you could change the words on your CD design from "Disc 1" to "Disc the First"? That would be friggin' sweet.
And then, we can get together again for Disc the Second a little later. Ya know, a little party and all, some cheese cubes, wine, the works. Not really. :)

It's kind of hard to start doing edits, as I don't have access to the .psd that Flame Stealer was working off of. Once "Disc the First" is accomplished, I can try to work in a fade of Crono's head. The original relied on the orange background, but I can do something with the Leene Square motif. I was actually thinking something along the lines of what you were with the color change from disc to disc. My original "Disc the Second" design was close to the first, but blue-green with a fade of Marle on the left side of the disc. I'll try and get that finished too, as well as find time to work on the design you were talking about.
Once school is over, (5-days-ish) I'll probably get a bit more done.
Glad I could help out in some way, and I'm looking forward to the final project in the long run, (as well as seeing what Global-Trance has in mind in the short run). It'll be exciting, I'm sure.

Okay, answers are coming in nicely and I'll make a checklist soon. We can set up a portion of the site for the look back, and this stuff's going on the Compendium as a major, singular feature anyway. Each interview will take up a story page, and they'll all be accessible from the main table of contents.
What I need, however...
I've successfully built the center of the Chrono community outside Gamefaqs. However, Chrono Symphonic is huge and I would rather not be limited to posting this feature and news at the few small boards left out there. I need links and suggestions for other forums or sites I can submit it to for plugging/display; anything general gaming or RPG where Chrono fans should hang out would be fine, like a Tales of Symphonia forum or something. Here's what I have so far:
Krono Krap

The same fade is going to be hard with the background. It varies so greatly from light to dark that any of the things I did on the original will not come out right...I'm working on something else though. I'll drop it off when it's done.
Would there be any way for me to get a larger version of the same picture? It'd be great, as the template I've been working from is the size of a CD, and therefore won't be stretched for application to one.

SEPTEMBER 27TH
is the 10-year anniversary of its North American release date. Which gives me the sneaking suspicion that
SEPTEMBER 27TH
would be a great day to have this project released. So that means that if you're planning on doing a song, please have it ready to go entirely at least a few weeks prior to
SEPTEMBER 27TH
so it can be released accordingly. Thank you.

I just realized something...there are three projects all near completion, all three representative of different things...just like the Next-Gen Console Wars of 360, Revolution, and PS3. So without further ado, a more detailed explaineration:
-Rise of the Star (Kirby's Adventure) - Nintendo Revolution
Considering Kirby's automatic connection to Nintendo (duh), and considering the project itself, Rise of the Star best represents the Revolution. While the project is already completed, it isn't telling any of its secrets (all of which are very interesting), and is waiting for just the right time to show itself.
-The Dark Side of Phobos (Doom) - XBOX 360
While Doom is for the PC, it's latest incarnation, Doom III, is most certainly an XBOX title, making this the best 360 candidate. While the project is not yet completed, and a lot of its specs are under wraps, more and more of its secrets are being unveiled, as well as the enormous array of parties/songs involved.
And finally, this humble project...
-Chrono Symphonic (Chrono Trigger) - Playstation 3
While it would be nice to cliam Nintendo as our homeground, Kirby deserves that particular title more, and we already have claim here with the PS1 re-release of Chrono Trigger, as well as Chrono Cross, its intellectual sequel. So, while the other two projects seem to be going at the goal with no true powers revealed, and while they seem about to be released close to one another, this project is letting it all hang out, also sporting the highest improvement over the original (25-30 times better, if I do recall) and no desire to finish earlier than the rest. :)
So there it is. Now, onto true business...
I'm trying my best not to download any of the songs, since I want to wait until the project is out, but...Grrr...Must hold back...
Hmm...this is a question that I, too, have been struggling with...
Should I bring down the songs from downloading, until the project is released, keeping these final tracks under wraps until we're ready? Or should I have everything out in the open? I honestly don't know, so I guess I'll ask you guys.
Any comments?

i would take them down. You basically have the tracks available for download beofre the real release. If people already have near finished versions whats the point of even releasing them?

Alright, yeah, I consulted with a few others and the general consensus seems to be that having the songs up for download now is rather counter-active to the big release of the project. Which means that
DO NOT RELEASE ANY ADDITIONAL WIPS TO THE PUBLIC...E-MAIL ME OR PM ME A LINK AND I WILL ADD IT TO THE DATABASE.
That is all.

While Doom is for the PC, it's latest incarnation, Doom III, is most certainly an XBOX title, making this the best 360 candidate.
~.C.S.~
I feel that this is wrong, as a heavy PC gamer myself. Shoulda been akin to your Chrono Symphonic explanation, where Doom 3/III (which came out for PC first and was ported out later) is not fitting but the best representation of XBOX from the three.
But it's alright, not many on the OC give PC proper credit instead of the XBOX. Onto the important stuff.
Let me start by saying this project looks awesome. With so many Chrono Trigger remixes already on the site, and some damn good ones, it was a disappointment to see that some tracks were not covered, and also that it takes a few CDs to contain them all. This project is perfect for a CT enthusiast like me, and I salute you all.
A suggestion for the dls of works from the site, I think you might want to consider giving out previews, like the guys from Dark Side of Phobos are doing. Give a 10-30 second clip, so people do not get the whole song, but still get a feel for what it will sound like. Of course, it's up to you, and I know there's been stuff voiced before about different projects being done differently.
And on a final note, thanks for announcing the upcoming 10th anniversary of the best RPG to grace a console. Initially I wondered why you were putting a date so far in the year, when you guys look to be so close, but the explanation of what you have left to do and added significance of this date makes it all good.
You should go about rounding up the serious CT fans and have a big project release/anniversary party on the 27th of September. Seriously.
Alright, I'm out.

And would there be instructions for printing out the CD covers and labels for the disc?
How about some liner notes?

1) Well, I had at least the OCR server and herograw server planned, but finding another server or two would probably be a good idea. I'll look into it.
2) I honestly don't have any experience/software that would be helpful in this regard, so I guess I would have to look it up or ask someone else. Unless of course somebody reading this has any kind words...
3) What do you mean by 'liner notes'? Either it's an unfamiliar term or a term I'm unfamiliar with (big difference...not really).
~.C.S.~
P.S. Also, Tracks 1 and 25 (Inciting Incident and To Far Away Times) are back online, for those wishing to hear some of the music. Those are the 'teaser' tracks, I guess you could say. :)

I have another update, which isn't too huge, but script updates are finished (for now), and some rather nice improvements have been made.
1) Edited general dialogue, though not to a great extent.
2) Included a modified form of Robo, as a "portable robotic assistant" that aids the group at various points in the story, though his inclusion is mainly for the sake of those CT fans that like Robo's character. Lucca wears him like a watch, BTW.
3) Included a new aerial fight scene with the Epoch, in which Lucca and Robo outgun and outrun several Zeal fighters while Crono and the others battle the Queen within the Ocean Palace.
4) Provided greater inclusion of some bit characters - Lara, the Nu - and cleaned up some plot points that were a bit sketchy.
Generally, it's just a more polished script. So, enjoy. :):):)

I haven't received new pictures in a few days, or Kee's interview. Should I continue to hold out? The list of those I haven't gotten yet still stands. I can go ahead with this whenever we want it released.

Hmm...if it doesn't look like you're getting anything, might as well not hold out. So I say, just get rid of the sample pictures put up in some people's places (PLBenjaminZ, BliziHiZake) and then release it when you think fit. Personally, once Monday rolls around, I'll have AIM back, so...I'll be trying to connect loose ends and urge mixers to turn in their pieces. I want to get this finished and ready for launch on 9/27, not only because of the anniversary, but also because I have other...things to prepare for.
So anyway, it's up to you. We can always add stuff on, y'know. It's not a problem.

And while we're asking questions: Claado, about the Crisis Revealed track ...
The source material is relatively upbeat tension/chase music, but the scene you sent me is the solemn video footage of the Day of Lavos. Were you intending to blend that track with that scene? Which tone are you looking for in me and ellywu2's rearrangement?
(Good work on the article Zeality. )

I JUST got my internet back after a week without it, and all I have to say is this...
sw33t
Anyway, onto the questions...
blizihizake, the EoT song should be 5:30. You're pretty darn close to it being finished, so yeah. Also, don't do the other EoT scenes. The second one will have no music (dramatic) and the third is covered by Track 17, The Epoch.
sephfire, the beginning of the piece does cover the Lavos music. Hmm...have you ever seen The Fifth Element or heard its music? "Leeloo Dallas, Multipass"? Alright, well, there's a song on there where the main female character sees a slideshow of human destruction, and it pretty much encompasses the feel I want for the beginning of the song. Here it is, if you want to see what I mean: http://symphonic.herograw.com/Project%20Files/22%20Pictures%20of%20War.wma. That's the opening, the revelation, and then the ending is like the, "We have to do something!" more upbeat portion. Still sombre, but with determination. If that makes any sense.
Does that answer your question? :)

And when the trumpets kick in its in B major, and then theres key changes after that (after that its in like lydian C# or something for 4 measures, then then back to b major). I could be listening to a crap midi though :)

Ok, hi, I exist :)
sorry :P
Yes, I have been busy - everyone gets busy at some point in their lives, so I'll spare you the details.
Here's the bad news: I swore not to do orchestral ever again until I get a decent orchestral library. It was too taxing... the results were great, but simply sucked my soul away trying to get it to sound good. I'm referring to OVGMC2 here, by the way. Anyway, the good news would be that I'm hoping my parents will get me Sonic Reality's Philharmonik (new EXCELLENT orchestral library coming soon) for my birthday. I would buy it myself, but that money is already destined for something else (no, it's not something exciting, it's college...)
The library comes out early August. September 27th sounds great for me if my parents come through... they might think it's kind of silly to give me a present so big that it will span 2 or 3 consecutive birthdays, but I think it'll be worth it :)
Question: has the "movie" stuff been ditched, or is it still on? It's great that you made the script, but I don't relish the idea of having to do all that extra coordination and such, partially because it would take a lot more effort and partially because it would take away from the creative process... but I'm willing to go along with it if that's still the idea.
Looking forward to getting re-started :) again, perfectly willing to go along with whatever the standard is for this project, whether I like it or not...
Hello everyone! I know I've said I was going to post a demo a while ago, but I'm upgrading from the Reason Orkester library to EWQLSO silver/Project SAM in a few days, so it would be pretty pointless. The arrangment's going pretty well though - if you want to picture something, it's a mixture of your typical film score affair with a touch of the sort of Waltzy stuff you'd hear in the 18th century.

True about the quality issue. Problem is, that was the feed from the PS1 cutscenes, and it looked that way on the console, so...that was an accurate version of the anime. I wish I had something better, but Squeenix probably won't give me the original files, so...tough luck. And the text, yeah...of course, I'm a simple person, so it doesn't matter so much to me. I'll update it later, maybe.
For now, enjoy the editing, at the least. And credit to sephfire for providing the song...I thought it worked well.

Okay, I've finally sat down to focus on writing. And now I realize why nobody wanted to do Guardia Castle.
It's in F# Major. Six sharps. AUGH.
*Checks his official piano score*
hmmmmm....its not in F# as far as I can tell. And it only has one sharp. Maybe using a user-homebrewed-midi for a resource makes it difficult. I know that was the case when I once took a peek at Frog's Theme in midi, and it was almost ALL in occidentals.
but if you are going for the midi arrangement, I think you may just have to buck up and deal with it?
good luck, you can do it!

No, there is no movie. Just the soundtrack for one.

Still, I love the tracks here, and on the official soundtracks. I might actually play the game one of these days...

It seems as though they only changed it to G Major so as to make it easier to play. I've tested it against the recording, and it's very definitely in F#. It won't be a big problem.

Yeah Reu that is some of the best dynamics I've heard on strings you really did a great job with that. Mind if I ask what you are using for your string samples?

Umm... can I know who prefers this version and who prefers the piano/singing only version?

I was sort of worried when I was downloading it, but now that I'm listening... Orcestration gives the piece something it was lacking to my ears. Of course, both versions are amazing, and whichever version makes it onto the project, I'll be keeping the other as well. Good job.

Hey Claado, if possible, you would like to see this movie of yours acted out right? The people who worked on the other canceled Chrono projects probably could try CGing the movie. They probably still have some of their models left over.

Go with the orchestrated version. I've already listened to the original 50+ times, and this new one still managed to give me chills. I'll definetly keep both, but I can't see myself really listening to the piano-only version aside from comparison reasons in the future. The added orchestration doesn't really detract the song anywhere and only improves it.
Reu has done it again. I loved Ascension to Cosmo Canyon, I loved Legend of the Snake, and God damnit I love this.

I typed a whole thing comparing the two versions of TFAT, but in the time it took, the computer spazzed out, and my work was gone.
I'm not about to retype it, but it was far more persuasive than this. Take my word for it. I have a lot of them.
I would point you to 1:03 as the low point, with the almost piercingly low crescendos drowning out the softer, more emotion-filled original piece. I would also, however point you to 1:32 as a high point, with the orchestration blending in perfectly and (other than the 1:48 low string part) not detracting from the original.
2:39 is the redeeming factor of the orchestration. It just sounds great. It changes up the slightly changed chorus just enough that it's even more distinctive, and helps add something more... final, to the finale.
My humble, non-music-making, graphics-inclined opinion is still that the original is vastly superior. It just delivers SO much more emotional impact than the new, orchestrated version. The orchestration is nice, but decidedly less nice than the piece that it covers up at times.
The original still gives me the chills even after upwards of 70 listens. The new version doesn't. I've given it a chance, but despite the few great parts, it just doesn't fit as well.
Still, it's still all on the artists to decide. All I ask is that you take my opinion into account.

The orchestration is a very good idea, sounds neat and adds an extra layer of feeling to the whole song.
But - at times the singing and orchestration seems to be fighting each other for attention. On a speaker it is not that bad, but in headphones it pretty noticable.
Don't get me wrong - the orchestration is neat. It is moving, but my ears just don't know which to focus on, the orchestration or the singing, 'cos they are darn good at the same time.
It's pretty much the same problem when the vocals were first added it. Would it better to place the orchestration when there's no singing?
I'm not musically talent, but just want to point out some segments where I find the orchestration and the singing clashing.
1:05 to 1:24 sounds bad on headphones. 2:20 (the really dramatic emotional part) overwhelms the singing in parts. The flute (or is that the flute?) is cool, but on headphones it's very disconcerting. The 'flute' seems to be playing on the right side whereas the singing is on the left, and they are of the same volume, and is very...strange.
I won't say ditch the orchestration. I think there's some minor quirks to iron out, like when the vocals and the piano piece was first merged.

I'm still torn between the original and new piece for To Far Away Times... they're both so beautiful...
But... just an odd question...
What are the lyrics?
Claado Shou
07-12-2005, 04:35 PM
The lyrics can be found in the WIP forums, in the actual critique thread, found here: http://www.ocremix.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=61274
Which brings me to my point: please save the long write-ups about this one particular piece - or even the multiple small ones - for that thread, where it belongs. This thread here is not for analysis of the song, and Reu doesn't even look here for critiques, so you're really just wasting your time. Go visit the WIP thread and post away, where it's wanted. Any other critiques will be deleted post-haste from this thread, so...just a friendly reminder.
And also, the decision is ultimately up to ME about which version is used on the project. I'll try listening to the two opposing sides of the argument by visiting the WIP thread, but please don't attack/convince Reu on this issue. It's not his problem, people.

Still, it's still all on the artists to decide.
Hehe, that's kinda the problem. I actually prefer the original version, whereas Reu digs the orchestration. So we're gonna contact a few judges and ask for advice on which to submit.
Claado Shou
07-13-2005, 08:20 AM
I would personally submit the orchestrated version to OCR, since it is much more of an adaptation than a retelling of the source material. But anyway...
Please get those WIPS in, people. Another PM and some e-mails will be going out soon, but it's all up to the remixers at this point. The rest is eye candy.

We only have a little more than two months left, everyone. I know other things may be popping up here and there and everywhere, but this should be a priority when it comes to your free time. We NEED THOSE SONGS in order to keep this rolling, so please...get moving.
I've also decided on a deadline...
Either show some progress by the end of July (which would be August 1st) or the song is going to be up for grabs.
Please don't let this succumb to atrophy...we're all just about ready for it to be over.
That's all I've got. Thanks for listening.

Glock is now piano, etc. Lead is now clarinet... too bad ST2's clarinet sucks. The piano I have isn't working very well for this style... hm. And the strings aren't exactly great... can't wait until I can start this whole thing over :D but I am glad to have such a cool source material to work with.

Additionally...for all the mixers that have at least one song already partially-done but are not yet completed with anything, which is Rellik and DarkeSword, you have one more week to show me an outline, actual music, etc. before those songs are closed out and sent up for the taking.
And now, we have a deadline...AUGUST 19TH. Read the front page for more information.

Cool beans. We got some news.
So, every song has been claimed, and they're all in the process of being done. Hopefully. End of August, finished songs. August 19th for some, a little later for others. Whatever. WORK. :)
Also, Compyfox, a really professional mixer, has offered to master the ENTIRE project previous to release...but he needs help. So he'll be releasing some instructions in a few days for all mixers to read and attempt to abide by, which will make this process much more efficient, and make the overall product incredible. So please send what he asks for - ALL MIXERS - and if you can't, then we'll figure something out. It'll ALL be good, don't you worry. :D:D:D:D:D:D
That's all I've got. Congrats to DSOP and MythNaz (plus his team of mixers) for making a great project, and go download it now! Excellent work, everybody.

Hwooooo...
Well, that's certainly sort of coming up quickly...
Would August 24th be ok? That's when I'm leaving to be back in early September, so that's why I'm not asking for later :P
In case you're curious, the reason that I'm asking is: that there are two reasons that I am asking for an extension (or maybe it's not an extension, whatever you would call it). And those two reasons are:
1. Crunch time at internship, coinciding with crunch time for stuff I need to get done before school starts.
2. Philharmonik isn't here yet. Not that I expected it to be, but I was expecting the due date to be... you know... closer to
Tuesday, September 27th, 2005
than
August 19, or next Friday
Don't think that I'm suggesting I was misled - it's just that I did kind of assumed it wouldn't be so early. So I'm hoping I get Philharmonik before the 24th - this will be my first piece of music done with it (:D) ;) ( )! If I get reliable information that Philharmonik won't be here in time to fit that timeframe, then yes... I will undergo the extremely painful process of trying to bring about this arrangement via the tools currently at my disposal.
I'll have roughly 4 (hopefully full) days to spend on that, so it shouldn't turn out too badly. But not exactly ideal... it'll be a pretty gory and painful time :([/quote]
Rellik

You know what?
I think it's time for solo piano debut :P
We'll see what happens.
I'm going for a relatively simple piece with big chords and a nice beat, Chopin prelude style (been studying some of those lately), should be fun, or maybe will be terrible, hm. EDIT: that won't work. Cinematic type stuff is required here.
