well, so i dont keep my hopes up, I'm just allready expecting this album to come out in about 2 more years.
I agree. And thankfully I still believe it'll be worth the wait.

Sorry to interrupt with something trivial, but

is the last person remaining for the interview questions. Since he's moving and all, I'm simply posting this as a last ditch attention-getter.
Well, I guess he's second to last, since I haven't heard from mv either. But I didnt' get answers in May from mv, so my hopes aren't that high.

Eh?
Ok, I'll PM my responses. The questions didn't come through my email properly (I had to view source to read them - I think I'm getting rid of that email altogether).
There was also a PM I sent to Claado regarding the album art that I needed an answer to before I moved forward.
Edit: I've forwarded what I feel to be the final versions of the album art. I don't currently have a printer to test them on though.

Sorry if this is off-topic at all, but I was looking at the site (and the album art) and noticed that the track "The Final Battle" no longer belongs to PLBenjaminZ (on the site) and seems to be a different remix altogether (according to the album art).
If I missed anything about this in the preceding hundred pages of this thread, my apologies, but what happened to this track? It was actually one of my favorites out of the WIP's, despite it being very obviously a WIP.
Compyfox

If I'm not mistaken (from the files on my HDD), "The Last Battle" wasn't finished and then there was a HDD crash involved from the side of PLBenjamin. He's still on the project with "Denadoro Climb" however.

Release is not Sep 29th anymore, but more like "december 2005"
Nevermind the pic, it's huge, but it's (finally?) in there. (just thought it might be at the top)

As someone who only recently found this thread, I find the prospect of reading all 100 pages of its 14-month history extremely daunting. Where I'm from, pertinent information such as 'here's the new, actually-up link to the website' gets edited in to the first post so it can be found easily.
That said, it *is* good etiquette to read at least the last couple of pages before posting, if not the entire thread.

Alright, some updates:
1) The project will be released next week. Exact date is unknown, but it'll be before the weekend. And more importantly, before Christmas. Yay!
2) The website is going to be transported to a new server, a reliable one, and all that jazz. You'll like it, I promise. StarZander does, at least.
3) The Special Edition of the project will be a little late (Compy has some more stuff to work out), but it will be forthcoming. As such, updates will as well.
And now, to all MIRRORERS:
PLEASE BE READY THIS WEEKEND AND IN THE NEXT WEEK TO RECEIVE LINKS FROM ME FOR THE TRACKS. IF YOU DON'T KNOW IF YOU'RE A MIRRORER OR NOT, CHECK THE BOTTOM OF THE FRONT POST.
That is all. For now...

Well looks like I'm on my old schedules with "nights put through". I just did some final tweaks for "Schala and the Queen", also for "To Far Away Times", finished a bonus track earlier that day (waiting for aproval from the creator). Now I'm on to "Manifest Destiny" that SirRus and I reconstructed.
It's 1:26am atm, I try to stay up till 6am/7am, then sleep a bit, grab a snack, watch Ninja Turtles (at 4pm) and then back to work. And that till the releasedate.
Stay tuned, you don't have to wait that long anymore.

ARG THAT Fsk*n SH*T! <continues coursing and swearing but with massive beeps>
Three hours of work on "Manifest Destiny", bouncing (which took almost an hour), mixing, finding a major bug in Cubase (yay) and then... I realise that I recorded at the wrong bpm! The ending is getting a bpm degration and I totally forgot that. Somehow Cubase removed the master bpm settings and all got recorded at 105bpm.
F*CK!
Such issues slow other things down. At least Cubase didn't crash in the middle of chosing samples and writing sections, as it did last night.
Yay... short past midnight. Oh how will I love the next 7 hours of work on that track. *sigh*
You see... it's not always working how it should be. And I wanted to write that off my soul.

 Chrono Symphonic Sneak Peek (http://www.studio-compyfox.de/Chrono_Symphonic_Sneak_Peek.mp3) (2:09min, mp3, 2,5MB)
This is a small insight of how the sound of Chrono Symphonic changed compared to the old available versions. One thing to keep in mind though (it's also written in the ID3v2 tags, but just in case):
This sneak peek doesn't necessarily reflect the final product! Final changes are still in progress.
It's as with game/movie trailers. Sometimes there's a scene in it that's not in the final release. Can happen in terms of mixing, too. See it more like as "temporal timestamp". BTW: All used tracks are already the new mixes, who just need final treatment.
Have fun while listening.

The torrent will be lossless files (if memory serves...) and the downloads from the site will be MP3, for ease of download. Compy has that all wrapped up in a box shrouded in secrecy and an enigma here and there, but it will be high-quality stuff no matter how it rolls. Eh?

I must have listened to that comparison 30 times trying to get a clear idea of the difference. Tell me if I'm not too far off, but it sounds like the music has a bit more depth to it, with the treble being clearer and the bass more defined. From the small snipit it's hard to tell how much of an overall difference to the quality of the sound this process has done, but I imagine it will be significant. Hopefully all the songs will mirror the quality of that small snipit :)

Well significant changes are the panning and mix in general. I just messed with "Manifest Destiny" that was hard to reconstruct (still working on it, as I also work on "Schala and the Queen"). Compared to the original it has a completely different mix in terms of volume (instruments) and panning.
And this counts to almost all tracks. Of course you can't get the "very same sound", but I tried to get a unity out of everything.
And Tommy Talarico is interested in C.S.?
Woha! Even more preasure. I also contacted Bob Katz as I started working on it. Leading audioengineer in terms of mastering standards. Oh... hell... yeah...

Revelation of Fire or Lucca's Arrival. It's about time someone did something good with Lucca's theme. It's an under-appreciated piece of music.
Also, even though it was previously released, I can't wait for the improved version of Confronting the Mystic. The melody was so buried in drums last time -- is it still drowned out like that? The melody was the best part of the original song...
Compyfox

I guess I let sephire take care of that (along with the collab with him and SirRus). Also have an ear out for "Schala and the Queen" (now that I finished it) and "Manifest Destiny" (which also was just completely reconstructed).
Some tracks couldn't be reconstructed or improved in terms of postproduction, due to HDD crashes, already deleted files, etc:
Track 09: Frog's Intervention (ellywu2)
Track 21: The Chrono Trigger (Russell Cox)
SE02: In Search of Light (SirRus - still hope he get's to me in time)
SE03: Determination (or Determinded) - PLBenjaminZ
So, sorry if they will sound a bit out of place in the final product.

Darkesword's Crono's Dream. I can't lie; it will have the Ocean Palace in there.
Uh...I think you mean "The Rising". "Crono's Dream" has Morning Sunlight and Peaceful Day as the themes. Also, Rellik's piece is entirely Undersea Palace (plus some GREAT rearrangement) and all that.
Also, when you said "Lucca's theme" above, Aurora Firestorm, which song off of the ST is that? There is no song named that. Also, "Revelation of Fire" uses The Hidden Truth/Singing Mountain, and "Lucca's Arrival" uses Far Off Promise/Battle with Magus. So if it's not one of those...sorry.

Don't WORRY...it's all taken care of. When StarZander gets the new site layout up and running (on the new server, BTW) then you all will see the plethora of info provided. And more than just source tunes, too...well, you'll see.
As for the songs with Schala, Tracks 16 and 19 both include Schala's Theme. It wasn't heavily used in the project, but Track 16 REALLY uses it, so...should be good.

Ah I can't decide (but I have to) which room (fingerprint/convolution) I will chose for the files. That's why I asked the mixers for "clean versions".
I'm still thinking about the following halls/recording environments. Thought of something like Sydney Opera Hall or something similar like the Atherton Auditorium from the Delta College in Stockton, CA. But that adds a too strongs and agressive reverb trail.
Hard to decide, but these are the halls I'm thinking off (and will test the next couple of hours):
SMA - Cello Studio - Los Angeles, CA
SMA - Todd-AO Scoring Stage, Los Angeles, CA
MED - 350 seat hall (don't know where it's from)
MED - Arts & Science Building, Utrecht Conservatory, Netherlands
MED - Clairmont Hall - Tel Aviv University Academy of Music, Israel
MED - Ingram Hall - Blair School of Music, Vanderbilt University, Nashville, TN
MED - Philips Hall, Netherlands
MED - Wisseloord Studios, Netherland
MED/BIG - Atherton Auditorium - Delta College, Stockton, CA
MED/BIG - Promenadikeskus Concert Hall, Pori, Finland
MED/BIG - Ryman Auditorium (Grand Ole Opry), Nashville Tennesse
MED/BIG - Stanforn Dinkelspiel Auditorium, Stanford University, CA
BIG - Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Netherlands
BIG - Vredenburg Hall, Utrecht, Netherlands
*BIG - Large Environment
*MED - Medium Size
*SMA - Small Size
Still hard to decide, ain't it? I'll keep you updated on what environment I actually used (I have some favourites, but nothing set yet). One thing's for sure... it will be "subtile", not full bled over everything. It still is a "digital produced soundtrack" after all. ;)

Okay, after a couple of testhearings I ran into big trouble. You know... a good hall/reverb is like finding the needle in hay. But sometimes the hay also stings. And this is my problem.
I narrowed it down to 6 Halls/Environments and I can't decide. Guess it'll be a close run. One reverb works good on the vocal tracks, but then it's too less on the other arrangements (even though reverbless some samplepacks like EWQL Silver, GIGA or Garritan have a prerecorded reverb). On some arrangements it sounds totally awesome, then it's piercing on the vocals and mud them up. *sigh*
Again... a long night, and I guess the next days will be made through or something like that.

Hmm, maybe I'm not sufficiently well-versed in audio engeering to understand why you can't have more than one hall, but I feel like using more than one would certainly take care of the problem of pre-recorded reverb on the instruments and the fact that you have vocals on only some tracks (I definitely have classical albums where the pieces were recorded in different places, particularly albums where there are different scale ensembles, like orchestra vs. string ensemble vs. chamber group).
However, if you definitely have to stick with one, maybe it would be better to stick with something more conservative (like a midsized one) to mitigate the adverse effects you're describing. Just a thought. Other than that, I defintely would like to see the one that gives you the best acoustics (i.e., a hall that was designed with symphonic music in mind). The university I go to has a performance hall that has exactly this problem -- its acoustics are terrible for a symphony orchestra as it's designed more for talks and addresses. On the other hand, the school my brother went to has a good music school and thus has a performance hall that sounds great when a symphony orchestra plays in it.
Just thought I'd share my two cents on the matter.

Well after blasting my ears for the last 6 hours, I'm still not sure what to use. But I pinned it down to three stages:
- Vredenburg Hall, Ultrecht, Netherlands (a large orchestra hall)
- Philips Hall, Netherlands (a 400 seats hall, fairly neutral sounding)
- Todd-AO Scoring Stage, Los Angeles, CA (well known recording environment for soundtracks)
Each have their advantages and disadvantages. The Vredenburg for example sounds very rich if I use the "center to far" setup (18m away from the soundstage, omni mics, 8m apart) but muds up the vocals with that setup (unless I customise it which takes hours). The Philips hall sounds nice and dry for everything (the Promenadikeskus is even better), maybe a bit too dry for some tracks. And the Todd-AO is fairly harsh and I need to turn the reverb up a lot to add "flavour" to some tracks.
I wanted to use the "Promenadikeskus Concert Hall" (also around 350 seats) in Porj, Finland. But those samples are only for "non commercial use".
Then again... it's a free videogame soundtrack project. Not to mention that all Orchestras are synthetic... *headscratch*
*sigh* I guess i'll decide in the last minute as soon as I get up again.
Spoom
12-19-2005, 05:35 AM
Well, assuming there are no plans to license the original music from Square Enix and sell the album, I would think a "non-commercial use only" soundstage would be fine.
And for my choice of track, I choose Track 24 - The New Beginning (Sleepy Emp) because I recently played through Radical Dreamers again and the music is familiar. ;^)
Compyfox
12-19-2005, 05:43 AM
Well I just realised that I have to "think different" (what a slogan) anyway. I can't simply go and layer a master reverb over the vocal tracks. That'd totally mud up the long and carefully engineered vocals up (the realization comes always last). I have to go "in depth" here - which is fairly easy as I have vocals and piano/orchestra seperated.
And now the fun starts again: Which soundstage.
Then again... now I can use smaller ones. And for this, the perfect solutions would be (in order of size):
- Promenadikeskus Concert Hall, Porj, Finland
- Philips Hall, Netherlands
- Todd-AO Scoring Stage, Los Angeles, CA
*starting biggest to smallest*
Still not easier to chose from. But now I can focus on certain sounds: Small Orchestra recordings compared to Film/Game Score recordings.
And there goes the night for me. I'll keep you updated.
EDIT:
OMG VGDJ (www.vgdj.net) was just released with the trailer of Chrono Symphonic... and it sounds sooooo different. *not to mention that SatQ was changed about 3 times since then*

The Last Stand is a really good song. RoeTaKa definitely blended the songs together well, and the ending perfectly suits the escape from the castle.
As for alternate names to Rellik's track...all the album art and all the other stuff have already been done, so...if you REALLY want it changed (I highly discourage, but it is your track), I need a new name right away (i.e. tonight) so I can have it altered. All the names you have there are too long, just so you know. I like the current name, though, so...take that as you will.
ALSO, I made an oopsies...Track 6 does not include Battle with Magus as a source tune. I shall change that immediately. Sorry for the confusion, if there was any.

After hours of prelistening, testing, even more listening to material, switching effects on and off and hours of indecision (8 hours at least!), I finally found the right "sound". Or in other words... finally the needle in the hay.
Chrono Symphonic will be 'presented' in the "Promenadikeskus Concert Hall" in Pori, Finland!
http://www.studio-compyfox.de/guestartist/chrono_symphonic/Convolution_Reverb.jpg
It took me a while and the last contenders were the Vredenburg Hall in the Netherlands, the Philips Hall in the Netherlands, the Todd-AO Scoring Stage in Los Angeles and the Promenadikesus Concert Hall in Finland. The last one got the deal. It sounds warm, natural, not too fuzzy (the Todd-AO was standing till the last minute, but it's reflections were either too harsh, or not even there). A nice environment for a 40-60 seats orchestra.
The vocal tracks won't be engineered with a "master reverb". Instead the piano/orchestra only get's the reverb and the vocals stay fairly clean (only minimal reverb as send). With this in-depth engineering I make sure that the vocals don't drown, but then again are still fitting to the whole setup.
Info about the Prominadikeskus Concert Hall:
The 700 seat hall was designed by Architect Company Guttner and built in 1999. The acoustic consulting was provided by Akukon Oy Consulting Engineers. The hall is roughly shoebox shaped with dimensions of 33 x 23 x 15 m (length x width x height) yielding a total volume of approximately 9300 m2. here are balconies on both sides, and the floor rises towards the rear part of the hall. A variety of diffusers has been installed on the walls, and the hall has a set of hanging reflectors above the stage projecting more early sound both to the audience as well as to the musicians. The upholstered seats have a folding seat cushion with perforation on the bottom plate, yielding a relatively small difference between the absorption of an occupied and an unoccupied seat. The first three rows of seats can be removed but they were present during the measurements.
More about the convolution project can be found here:
http://www.acoustics.hut.fi/projects/poririrs/
Now that this is off the table, I have to get back to work.

Bad news, everyone. And yeah... you can blame it on me, it's only fair as I screwed up more than once.
"Chrono Symphonic won't be released before X-Mas or on X-Mas." - or in other words "not this week" (hell even the teaser is wrong now).
There're reasons Why it isn't happening. And most of them will be only excuses for you. For example that I can't force myself on working on it 5+ days in a row from teh point I stood up, till I went to bed. Or private issues I had before, being sick 3 times in between (last time knocked out for over a week), constant headaches the longer I work on the material, concentrating issues. I... simply need a break, can't take it anymore, everything is crushing down!
*sigh* Like I said... All're excuses (however with a truth behind it).
I'm really terribly sorry. Both Claado and I (and especially I) promised you to get this done by the 22nd. "My" deadline was the 20th to get things done. And I failed... again. *Maybe I'm just not made for this*
I can't and won't give you a new releasedate (even if there is one already), neither can I give you any other news other than I'll be also quiet for a bit. Forcing myself to work on that project doesn't make it better, it's the other way around.
Again... I'm terribly sorry for being such a hassle (and whatever else you wanna call me) to you. I guess i's back to the old habit again - which means... "waiting".
Again, I'm terribly sorry.
*reminds me of Working Designs - ironic, isn't it?*

Not a big deal to me. As long as you get it done before New Year's Day, that seems fine to me, as 2005 is supposed to be the 10th anniversary year of Chrono Trigger. That's just to preserve some of the symbolism there.
As you work on the project and hear from nothing but fanboys and people who want the tracks out, one's point-of-view tends to become too insular. The big picture is that when it's out, it's out. No one's really gonna remember or care about any delays, as they'll be a moot point.
As far as I'm concerned, just keep doing what you're doing.

The source material is great, and I trust the mixers are proficient, so I can suck it up and adjust the volume by hand if necessary.
I fear that if you attempt to make it immaculate, it shall never be done.

Some news about the release(s):
 Chrono Symphonic will feature 25 tracks only!
That means that the audition tracks won't be included in this release. The "Regular Edition" will be a mp3 only version as of late, too.
The release date is still a thing to be posted, but it will be "this year". Not 2006!
 Chrono Symphonic will also be released as "Special Edition"!
Before anybody screams that we do a mp3 only release: The Special Edition will be released as lossless version (only). Or in other words - CD images. A Special Edition won't be one without some "bonus material". I won't spoil anything yet, but one thing is for sure... the waiting is totally worth.
The Special Edition will be released in January. No set release date either.
I keep you updated...

Which of the releases is going to be tracked on the OCR tracker? You need to work out the logistics of this release.
I would recommend that you just release the special edition as the normal one, even if it takes a little more time, rather than doing a stunted MP3-only release, and then setting up a brand new torrent for the special edition.
Compyfox
12-27-2005, 01:37 AM
If it goes by me, the MP3 only version via the OCR tracker. DJP offered me the first time this came up to do an additional seeding on his tracker, too, if there will be something like an 'enhanced edition'. He just needs to adjust his tracker on the mainpage.
The main reason we do a mp3 "only" release are bandwidth issues (as in some listeners are still on dialup, especially over the holidays). Of course there can always be changes in the last minute (like maybe adding a lossless encoded version), but if you remember - "Relics of the Chozo" was also first released as OGG version only. A couple of weeks later (and due to popular demand) came a CD ISO.
I mean... "Hedgehog Heaven" was released as MP3 only project, so was "Bound Together" (not OCR), "Duck Hunt: Repecussions of Foul Lamentation" (also not official OCR) or "Relics of the Chozo". "Kong in Concert" was released as lossless version from the start, "Dark Side of Phobos" and "Kirby Rise of the Star" was released as "multiversion" (mp3/flac). Not to sound defensive or impolite, but do we really need to stick to that standard?
That's what the "Special Edition" is for.
It's like a DVD release - take the "Lord of the Rings" DVDs for example. First they were released 3/4th a year later than the cinema release to fresh up the storyline for the next part, and a couple of week/moths later came a Special Extended Edition. It's kind of similar for our case too. First we release the "Regular Edition" to celebrate the "10th Anniversary" of Chrono Trigger (better late than never) and a couple of weeks later, to keep the party "running", we release an enhanced version and show even more hommage for this game.
BTW: The "Special Edition" is planned to be released as Torrent via "Studio Compyfox" as main tracker. Mirror/Backup is ThaSauce so far. Of course a lot can change till the release of the special edition. That's why I said I can't go in-depth on that yet.
More soon.

I just think that it makes more sense to do a multiversion like we did with Doom and Kirby. Have the mirrors host the lossy-encodes (MP3s), and have the torrent distribution contain both lossy and lossless encodes in a selectable multifile torrent. Bandwidth issues solved.
Two versions creates more confusion for the end-listener, and if you do ONE torrent, it'll have a longer life than if you run two torrents parallel to eachother; running one torrent is more efficient as well as far as tracking and leeching.
Chrono Trigger was released in March '95 in Japan and August '95 in the US. We're still in the 10th anniversary year, so I don't think it's ridiculously important to do a release before January of 2006.
I think it's more important to do one cohesive release with everything available rather than to split it up with what basically amounts to an MP3-teaser release.
The only project to ever do multiple releases was Relics of the Chozo and that's because it was the first one, and there was a demand afterwards for lossless. We've come a long way since then, and we understand the demand associated with these big releases. I don't think we should complicate the release by doing two versions. Release the whole thing and be done with it.
We've been waiting patiently for over a year now. A few more weeks isn't going to kill anyone.

It's not a "mp3 teaser", it's a regular release!
Claado wanted to release it this year as he's occupied starting at the dawn of the next. It was also my fault (as mentioned a couple of times) that this release was postponed that often - Murphy's Law, can happen!
Another thing is that I still work on a lot of the bonus material, meaning that some stuff has yet to be finished too. Even if I wanted to, I can't release it (and by "it" I mean the "Special Edition") before new years eve.
If there're "releasing standards" for remixing projects now too, great... We can't (especially I can't) and won't do it any different.
And what's so confusing on different releases and/or release dates? Like I said... it's not any different with DVDs, video games, audio CDs, etc. Now if we do a torrent release "later" than the regular one, then there'll be screams for "why there is no torrent release" and that it's not good to "release it via homepages only - in modern internet times" (again that bandwidth discussion again). I don't get it why we have to give in, do it like somebody else started it cause he felt like it, and now all others adapt that idea? (mp3/flac release).
This is no stunt we try to pull off here. This is how we planned it in the last couple of weeks. You "still" get the lossless version - but a couple of days later. And if another project would have done it that way, I'd have gotten both versions too.
However I'm not the project coordinator. Claado has the final word on it. But I don't think that there will be massive changes anymore.

12-28-2005, 08:19 AM
Just figured I'd throw in another point of view on dual releases (i.e. MP3/FLAC torrents). Personally, I've never really gotten the point. I don't really see why anyone would want both the FLACs and the MP3s. If all they want are something small and listenable, MP3s are fine, if they want something at its original quality, they can get the FLACs. If the torrents are being used as largely separate entities (one group sets the MP3s to Do Not Download, the other sets the FLACs to DND), there's not really much point in their being a single torrent in the first place. The only reason I can think of to have both is if one wanted a FLAC set for archival purposes (or to burn a CD) and an MP3 set for listening purposes (e.g., on a flash DAP). However, if they're already downloading the FLACs, they can encode their own portable files, in whatever format they wish, at whatever bitrate they wish.
Anyway, that's just my thoughts. See user name and sig before responding.
I.Medley
12-28-2005, 09:06 AM
No one is expected to download both FLAC and mp3 files. In fact, people are usually encouraged to download only one type of file, to save bandwidth.
However, by having both files on one torrent, it becomes easier to manage; as Darkesword said, it is more efficient to have one torrent than two parallel ones.
I will say that, since I will most likely not be able to download the project until late January, I leave the decision of the release up to the project coordinator.

Looking forward to this release.
But I'd rather see two separate torrents than one. I don't know how to use "do not download" though I could probably figure it out. I bet many, many other people who would be torrenting it will ALSO not know how, and some of them won't realize they can or should. So it may be easier to manage to have one torrent, but two parallel torrents will probably cut bandwidth usage and ease of use for downloaders significantly.

Crap.
From StarZander (the website guy):
I'm extremely sorry, but I can't make it. It's too little time. I made the script for the random link first, but then it didn't work properly. It opened the song in the browser instead of downloading it, and I couldn't change it no matter what I did. So I started encoding something else, more simple, but then I ran out of time. If I had known that the deadline for the website was New Years Eve, then things might have been different, but you never told me about that. I've been stressing all morning to get it all to work, but I just ran out of time. I have to hurry now, to catch my train. I will finish the website when I get back, on sunday, and then e-mail you. You will have to let everyone know the bad news, unfortunately. Blame me if you want, but I just ran out of time.
Well, you'll hear from me again in a few days, and sorry again for ruining the whole thing. I tried, atleast.
New releasedate: January 2nd, 2006.
Sorry, guys. It'll have to be a few days late. Unfortunately. AGAIN.

Agreed. I could actually care less about what the website that hosts the files looks like (I do agree that Chrono Symphonic does deserve the high quality stuff starzander can produce, but that can wait), just do something like a soft opening of it and create a temporary page for a few days.
I think everyone agrees that we just want to hear what is going to be one of the best projects to be released on this site. Whatever the case, keep up the great work everyone. :D
Edit: Alright, I sort of overlooked the issue of what was actually being edited on the site. For some reason I thought it was only the page's design, not the random scripting for the links. That definitely would warrant a delay as stressing out bandwidth is a bad thing.

I agree with Last Crusader, Zircon, and TheWanderer. Just get it out there; so many of us don't care if the website is sparkling. The point is the music, and we've been waiting for the music. Why not just release the finished music when it's done and then put the website in with the "special, highly slicked-up with new content"-edition package? Then, people who want all the extras will have a site o' awesomeness to boot, but people will still get the music. It's not like we won't go back to see the special edition, anyway. I will, at least, for sure. For the sake of having it out in 2005, which would be such a cool New Years gift...why not?

You can't be serious. AGAIN!??! Can't you just release the damn thing?
Just whip something up in html or something, just give us a page with a bunch of raw text links.
I beg of you, I am losing faith. When it was promised before New Years Eve... I didn't believe it. Please give me something to believe in!
Why would we want any aspect of the project to be rushed if we've been willing to wait this long? My only gripe with this delay is that now it's going to be released at the beginning of the month. That means my unused bandwidth for december (a considerable amount) will be squandered.
oh well..

It's not about having a pretty site, it's about showing a little courtesy to those of us about to serve up >100MB worth of MP3s to hundreds of people free of charge. The load needs to be distributed, or one or two servers are going to be saturated and unusable for the duration, while all the others sit there doing nothing because human nature is to just click the first link.
Personally, my server has other things to do, too, like handling email and serving up several websites. I've got a ton of bandwidth to spare, but I can't afford to have everyone who wants to download Chrono Symphonic hit my server at once. The load needs to be distributed among the mirrors as much as is practical.

Cause sometimes, the production, finishing the final package, ends up with a more enjoyable and complete looking project. It's like if you have cheese on toast and go "fuck it, im just gonna have dry toast cause I don't have time to go to the shops to buy myself some cheese, and maybe some worcester sauce to liven it up" YOU SEE WHAT I DID THERE?!?! If I made time to go to the shop, I could get WORCESTER SAUCE with my cheese to go on the toast. The theory is - You wait a little longer, and your penis gets bigger. Same with the cheese and worcester and toast, and same with CHRONO SYMPHONIC. Wait a little longer and man, might get some ham with it too.

Lollercakes.
Anyway, at first I was thinking "are you fucking joking?" But on second thought, from everything I hear, this deserves to be a spectacular event, not a fade-in. Would you, today, tell the Binnie of the past to release KiC early, without the awesome site to pay visual tribute to its aural grandeur?
SZ, I know some of the frustration in web design. You take the time you need to make it tight; we'll all be grateful for your hard work.

I could have worked one extra day on it, and not mde the night through and slept all day.
I'm also for simple textlinks... like Dark Side of Phobos (and all other projects). Which is simple, nothing special. No random link script needed.
No... No... No... Sigh... Sigh... Sigh...
My new year was about to be a lot more happier ;_;
Maybe using text links (or a simple js snippet that displays a link at random between available mirrors) could save the day...
Anyway, thanks for trying to meet the deadline,

Seriously though, ClaadoShou, you shouldn't have delayed it. It just makes Compyfox feel worse for whatever reason he is feeling bad for, and IMO, the music shouldn't have to be released WITH the site.

Stop whining.
Claado already apologized, and if StarZander can't get the distro script done in time, then you'll just have to wait. It's an important aspect that alleviates server stress.
It's not the end of the world. In any case, I'm going to lock this to prevent further complaining. Claado, since you're a coordinator, you can still post, bump, and reply. I'll also add Compy to the coordinators group so that he can post here as well.

I believe of all the posts made when I was gone, DarkeSword's was the best. Thank you for doing that.
All you people have to do is wait. I have to pack up everything I own, drive 20 hours to New York, and still find time to release the thing. StarZander has to get the script running properly on the site, and make the website proper because IT'S THE OFFICIAL RELEASE AND IT NEEDS AN OFFICIAL SITE. And DJP needs to operate remotely as well, and we all three need to coordinate our efforts.
So as DS put it, stop whining. Larry's words from before still live on..."nobody will remember the delay, only the project itself." It won't kill/maim/injure/insult/hurt you to wait. So wait.

I'd also like to ask the "mirrorers" to keep the files for themselves and not pimp them around anymore. You had the chance to listen to the project "sooner". But that doesn't mean you can tease all others. Please be fair.
If everything calms down a little, I'll think about unlocking this thread. Maybe I'll also post a small "demo" of Chrono Symphonic with all tracks like I did for "Hits & Misses" by Joe Cammisa, but only maybe. Else... like Larry and Claado said... the music is important, not how often it was delayed.
Till then...

I feel the need to second that. It's one thing for fans to "support" the project when it's in full stride and making progress. It's quite another for those same fans to start whining when the project trips.
This project's been in the works for over a year. 400+ days. Surely just 4 days, less than 1% of this project's time, can be used to polish everything.
Claado, StarZander, and the musicians: I wish you all the best. :)

Now that anyone everyone has had a few days to cool off, I'm going to unlock this thread. If you have anything constructive to say, you can say it, but needless whining, complaining, moaning, etc is not welcome.
Please take note that even though it's 2006, we are still in the 10th anniversary year of Chrono Trigger, as the game was not released until mid/late 1995, so nobody missed the 10th anniversary and Chrono Trigger is still awesome blah blah blah.
This thread will remain open after the normal release comes out so that project members and the general community can discuss the pending release of the Special Edition.
All FEEDBACK/REVIEWS of Chrono Symphonic must be posted in the feedback and comments thread that will be created upon the release of the project. Any reviews that are written in THIS thread will be deleted. I made this text big because I just know that people are going to post reviews here anyway. You've been told the procedure in obnoxious, size 18, bolded text. Follow it, and don't complain when your review gets deleted.

I think much of what was interpretted as whining was more actually an expression of frustration. When such a beloved project stumbles "for reasons beyond control," it creates a feeling of helplessness for many fans, myself included. It's hard watching something you care about falter and not being able to do anything about it. Frankly, I'm surprised more fans haven't voiced their enthusiasm for this project. I apologize on behalf of any comments that were perceived as threatening or seemed to question the decision to delay the project further, but hopefully the project team can see that many of these comments were born out of devoted affection, not selfishness, particularly from the many of us who have followed this project since its inception more than a year ago.
The first and foremost priority is to release an outstanding project, and, if that means taking some extra time, that's fine with me.

I for one have been excited about this Remix Project since I first heard about it. Chrono Trigger was one of my two favorite SNES games, so I am obviously excited about the prospect of hearing a complete project like this one.
And like others before me have said, there are a lot of us who are just plain bleeding from our ears to hear it. We've been ready as long as the project has existed. Some of us have been watching since it's inception. I'm typically an impatient person, but I understand that an undertaking like this one requires a lot of time and effort to accomplish. There are two or three games that I'd like to see Remix Projects of, but I *know* I don't have the time and effort (and ability for that matter) to see any of those off the ground myself. I'm just glad there are people out there who do have those qualities.
I've been more or less cool with the delays. The only thing I'd have to say that bothered me at all is the fact that there are people out there listening to it right now. =\ But I guess if I had a server capable of mirroring then I could have had that privilege as well. I'm just glad the BitTorrent technology exists or I wouldn't be able to help this project at all.
Also, after seeing the public "outcry" when more delays were announced just reminded me of why so many game companies just flat out got rid of the idea of announcing release dates. Blizzard's motto became "The patch will be out when it's done," simply because they know that there are some times (ok... when it comes to Blizzard: SEVERAL times) circumstances that are beyond their control. So they announce a day, miss it, and all their loyal fans and subscribers call them a bunch of liers (with various explatives included). So they pretty much abolished that practice. Perhaps not such a stringent deadline should have been applied. I mean, as you said yourself DarkeSword, as far as the 10 year anniversary goes, you have until the middle of 2006. Perhaps it would have been best to stick with, "Chrono Symphonic will be released as soon as it's finished."
Anyways, I can't wait to see/hear the finished product. I've got many other OC Remix projects on my computer but I really think this is shaping up to be the best one so far.
A big thanks to everyone involved. <3

Well, we'll have an extra feedback thread for that, so please stick to that one. The thread remains open for questions only in terms of the "Special Edition". I'll get into that shortly, but fist of all, an apollogy.
An apollogy to all those who got dissapointed with the 5 or so releasedates and this whole thing still got postponed. It can happen. Most of the delays were on my behalf, the last one just wasn't expected. Simply... Murphy's Law... if you think everything goes well, it sure doesn't
The Second apollogy goes to all you listeners. In the last couple of days after I was done uploading the files for the people mirroring/the torrent release, I had the chance to take a deeeper breath and listen to the "regular edition". And as stuff like that always happens, I found some flaws in it in terms of mixing.
Which brings me to the next point, the "Special Edition" itself. I don't want to spoil that much "yet", but a little teaser and info for you, to keep things running.
 Chrono Symphonic - Special Edition will be completely "remastered"
Meaning that I'll take even more time for it and fix some issues with some tracks I'm not happy with (mainly reverb and EQ issues). This doesn't mean that the regular release is bad. It just means that even I are only human and with the tight timelines, problems while mixing with Wavelab, PC crashes (I lost count how often that happened), etc some minor flaws crawled even into this release. Again, I'm sorry about that.
 The Special Edition will have at least 35min of extra music material
You'll notice that there're the "audition tracks" missing in the "regular release". Those will be included in the Special Edition, along with a handful of new and previously unreleased tracks
 The Special Edition is aimed to have 3 CDs and will be released as ISO's (via Torrent)
Yup, that means "lossless" right from the start. It is planned that the CDs are prepared beforehand so that you can burn it straight to CD after you downloaded the torrent files. A mp3/FLAC release is not planned this time, but I consider at least a "remastered" mp3 release of the "Regular Edition", also available via torrent.
 The Special Edition will contain additional bonus material
Namely: Outtakes, Production Report, Trailer, Artwork, Songtext, Interviews, etc. So far it is planned to include all that on the 3rd CD as "Data Track" like some audio CDs have that too. I'm still sorting out the material so I can't say yet whether or not there will be a 4th CD just with those material only.
 Chrono Symphonic - Special Edition rough estimated release date
I can't say anything about a definite releasedate yet(!), but I aim for january 2006 (february latest). No guarantee on that yet, though. So please don't scream at me if it comes out a little later (remember, we're still have CT's 10th Anniversary till September). As soon as I think the "pack" is completely finished and ready for release, I'll give out a proper releasedate.
This is all I can give you for now. I'll keep you updated. I hope you'll enjoy the "first" release of Chrono Symphonic, but please stay tuned for the Special Edition, too.

Is anyone actually using them? I've gotten a few people mentioning they'd like versions with no logo or quote on them whatsoever. It's still related to the project, but it's not as much of an advertisment as the original. Anyone want unblemished versions? I'm up for it if people are after it.

The Special Edition is aimed to have 3 CDs and will be released as ISO's (via Torrent)
I would really prefer it to be released as FLACs, as ISOs will just waste download time for something I'll be converting to FLAC anyway. (FLAC is bit for bit exactly the same as the original audio, only smaller. The compression process actually stores an MD5 of the track (http://flac.sourceforge.net/features.html) to make sure of this.)
Anyway, definitely looking forward to the release, keep up the good work everyone.

01-02-2006, 12:55 AM
*sigh* Not "that" discussion again. Look... if you don't want to download the ISO's, then don't do it. But I won't make different versions this time. ISO's are already lossless, packed up in RAR they eat as much as FLAC's "non packed". You can do the encoding for yourself.
No discussion on that this time. I plan this for weeks now. And my opinion won't change. Sorry. Same with the mp3s. I said "maybe there will be some", but it's not a "must" for me. Also the SE is no must, but I've been working on C.S. for so long now, with a couple of extra material that went on "behind the scenes". Why not push it out?
Sorry if that doesn't please you or even offend you. But these are my rules this time.
And think about this: You get 3(!) CDs with music, professionally engineered... for free. You'd usually pay at least 35bucks for such a project "minimum", and then it's barely a 2 CD release.

Unfortunately, considering that I won't have internet access the entire time the next few days (I'm currently at a Jameson Inn using a wireless connection, on my way to New York), I probably won't be able to announce the release previous to it happening. So the best I can tell you guys, and the best you're going to get, is that it SHOULD be the next two days, the 2nd or the 3rd. I have to wait until I, DJP, and SZ are all available at once, and then it will come out. Trust me, I want NOTHING more than to do this quickly. But we're gonna do it right too.
And also, Compy and I are mentally and emotionally done with people complaining or asking for something different than what they're getting. You're not paying for the privilege of hearing this, and you're not the ones that are sacrificing time and energy and other important aspects of your busy lives for doing this. And just because it's a Fan Project doesn't mean that you, the fans, have any say in how it happens. ISO is the release format of the Special Edition, that's that. I appreciate everyone that isn't badmouthing the decision, but to you others...please wrap it up.
And now back to other business...thanks to DarkeSword for deciding to keep the thread up and running during the SE release. Just wanted to say that.

I will say this. Without giving too much lead into things, this album is definitely worth the wait. I won't go into too much more detail because of the big, 16 inch font message on page 116, but it definitely rocks and the team should be very proud of themselves.

ISO's are 1:1 images from CDs. Due to the fact that I have to make a CD anyway before I can put this into MP3, we cut everything else and just release the ISO.

Most ISOs are between 650 to 700 MB if the entire CD is used. There are some CD'sthat can go up to 900 MB, but those are very, very, very rare and I can't think of anyone who has ever released anything using that capacity (possibly because by that point, the data is more prone to becoming corrupt?)
So...going with 700 MB iso images...
700 * 3 = 2100 MBs or roughly 2 gigs. Due take into account the crudeness of this equation.
Now, this is presuming they use all three CDs to their entirity (SP?).
So, you are set. Furthermore, it is NOT that hard to buy a new, 80 gig HDD. When I bought an EXTERNAL HDD back in the States, it was roughly 80 U.S.D. By now, things should be even cheaper, perhaps 60 U.S.D. I know I was able to snag a 40-gig notebook drive (a much smaller, thereby more expensive drive) for about 50 U.S.D. So, even if you are in desperate need for space, you can always go that option. And once you have burnt the album, you can still use that drive for a good couple of years, even using it from one computer to another...

That aside, though. I apologize if this has been said before in the thread, but what size are we talking about for these ISO files? If it's just enough that I can store until it gets burned, then that'll be fine.
CD1 has 47min, CD2 has 39min. Dont't know how big CD3 will be. Just think of 3x700MB. Even though I will pack them. And of course, the less material on the CD, the smaller the packed files. Or in other words: I can't say you anything about that yet.
