This will be my first year that I will be attending - I'm not really an anime person, but I'm more interested in spending time with fellow OCRers who'll be there (and it comes at a convenient time for me, given my traveling schedule). After seeing all sorts of people I've missed at previous Otakons, I figure it's about time I show my face at this one.

Also, more BBBQs.

I'm not that crazy about anime either*, but I plan on attending Otakon to see all the wonderful OCR peoples. Also, OCR needs someone to sit on the panel and not say anything.

*Death Note was pretty cool though, first anime I've seen since college.

Definitely a maybe again. Just like last year, I want to go, and living 30 minutes away makes for an easy daily drive, but I'm simply not sure I'll be able to pull it off this time.

If I can't make Otakon itself and there's another BBQ Sunday afternoon though, I should have no problem hitting that up.

I'd love to but I really do think it would be physically impossible to pull off. I got lost in my own fucking APARTMENT once. And its one of those stories you think "Oh, well, he has a pretty good excuse for it."

I really don't. :(

Maybe I could get a ride from someone and split the cost?

Can you drive from there? From Sevierville, it's... maybe 9 hours? Possibly less if you don't make any stops.0

Plus a cheap alternative to hotels in downtown Baltimore is getting one along I-95 between the Beltway and Baltimore; from there, it's like a 15-20 minute drive in each day.

Also, if you know anyone even along the way, you could split costs. (Or, alternatively, if any of the folks in Nashville are going, they could pick you up along the way all the same?)

Just tossing out suggestions here. KF

Bad sense of direction? Also, couldn't you try to print something out from Google Maps for directions?

Well, directions are filled with extremely vague signal markers that give me absolutely no indication on where I am. I have to see and remember how its done like 10 times before I get it.

Also, Google Maps once showed you how to drive to England from Wisconsin.

I mean, I'd love to try it, but there's just too good a chance I'll take a wrong turn in Alburqurque and end up Shit Creek without a boat.

I'm going to be there at Otakon. It'll be my second year of attending, and I'm just as excited for this year's OCR panel as I was for last year's. I introduced two of my friends to OCR that year and made fans out of them. Here's hoping for more.

I'm registered, and will be at the panel as I've been for the last two years. The OCR panel is one of two panels that I enjoy going to. The other being "Dub Actors after Dark". I can't talk about it. Nobody should EVER talk about it. You just have to experience it. Trust me.

Any word yet on when the panel will be? I'm still waiting to hear about acceptance/confirmation of a panel I'm co-hosting, so I'd imagine they're still a little ways away from fixing the schedule.

Grill surface area is about 2.5x that of the 20" round grill I used last year, and it can get much hotter, meaning food moves on and off much faster.

Yeah, actually last year we listened to whatever project had just come out.

Additional notes:
-The pool will be open, bring swimwear if interested, I've got extra towels.
-Since we're getting new windows put in early August the patio's going to be a big mess, so everything's going to take place out in the yard. This means we might have to run inside if it rains. It also means not much shade will be available, so bring/wear sunscreen.

I'm mostly happy my panel (Lunar panel at 4:30) doesn't overlap with OCR (at 6:15). The OCR one does overlap with the Tales series and Iron Editor... though the choice of which of those to attend is obvious for me. KF

Speaking of cosplay: I was lazy/busy this year, and won't have my new costume done for Otakon (hopefully it'll be ready for Connecticon). What should I go as this year for Saturday: Lucca from Chrono Trigger (which I wore last year), Zidane from FFIX, or Squall from FFVIII?

There is always a trivia portion during OCR panels, and I'll be whipping up a preview track soon for the DKC 2 project to be played during the panel alongside the other music that will probably be played.

I think some prizes during the panel will include a Wii, FF4 project physical copies, shirts, and hoodies.

Also, I will probably be there around 5 on Thursday as well, if not earlier. I'll be the asian wearing a white OCR shirt - i.e., shouldn't miss me.

Important BBQ Info

1. I've decided to run it from 12 noon to Really Late on Sunday, this gives everyone a chance to swing by.
2. Cover is 5 dollars. I don't mean to be a jerk about asking for money but this does cost quite a bit with the spread I have planned, make sure you have the cash on hand or in Paypal. If you want to bring some food/drink instead, PM me and we can work something out.
3. Invite other people! Don't feel like you can't go because you have a friend with you that doesn't know me, or something like that. I'm going to have a tremendous amount of food/beverage so we need lots of people to eat it all!
4. We should have an FF4 listening party at some point.

And once again if anyone wants to pay in advance send $5 Paypal to xerol@xerol.org, just make sure to put your username in there somewhere so I know who you are.

Bahamut
07-14-2009, 06:12 PM
I'd also like to add that after the OCR panel, Level 99 is offering his place for a place to have a live FF4 listening party - would people be up for this?

Edit: I printed out 10 copies of directions to Stevo's place from the Baltimore Convention Center. I can print out more if necessary, but it would have to be done today as I'm disconnecting the Mac Pro & disassembling the desk in preparation for moving. I'm pretty sure my friend I'll be at the panel with can take 1 or 2 people to the listening party.

Saturday afternoon is my panel! {..}
And the Kanon Wakeshima concert.
The Zombie Apocalypse panel is always fun, too.

As for lunch, bear in mind that the Inner Harbor gets incredibly crowded around lunch during the con (not to mention that CPK closed like 2 years ago). So, larger groups are liable to get separated, and it can take like an hour to finally get some food. You might want to do, like, 2pm-ish? KF

My two fav. places are Tir Na Nog and Houlihan's; tend to be a little less crowded, as well.

Any thoughts on either, for lunch?

Rare Candy will be playing at 3pm in Jamspace on Sat., that seems like something a lot of folks (incl. myself) would wanna catch, as well.

Little bit of bad news about the BBQ: We're getting replacement windows in August and as a result the patio's a mess. There's plenty of space out in the yard and whatnot, it'll just be a little more crowded than previous years. And if it rains we'll have to run inside the house.

Edit: Dave, I'm up for it - I'll give you a call sometime Saturday morning then? If anyone wants my number, PM me and I can leave you a PM tomorrow night with my #.
I saw that line. We got there a little after five, and ended up waiting in line for almost two hours, but we got our badges last night. Wish you luck getting in today Wes!

We? Who were you with?

Also, we plan on getting to the con late today, so no biggie.

The BBQ is officially starting at noon but since I just got paid today and still have to go buy food/stuff it'll probably actually start around 1. I'm not sure when most people are planning to show up. Things will probably be going late (at least until 11 pm) so there's no pressure outside of travel plans to get there or leave at any specific time.

The panel was absolutely amazing, and Mister Liontamer sir, thanks for selling me the t-shirt(s) and handing away the last free CD! I don't know who you were working with, but getting a business card was AMAZING! You guys all rock!

I know I said I was going to come to the BBQ, but I just came to the realization that by the time I'm done at Otakon today, I'll have to be heading home anyway. So I'm going to skip the BBQ this year. My apologies Xerol. Also, I don't have directions to your place anyway, and I won't have any way of getting them because we're going to be checked out by 8:15-8:30, so by the time you see this post, we'll most likely be at the convention for the last time.

Oh by the way, there's a convention happening in King of Prussia, Pa this fall called Zenkaikon. -- http://www.zenkaikon.com/index.php -- I'm hopeful about going to that con, should be fun. If anyone's interested in an OCR meet up there, I definitely think it'd be fun. And then of course... MAGFEEEEEEEEEEEEST!!!!!

See you guys soon!

So it was a great time doing the panel during Otakon - I felt a bit daunted since it was my first time speaking to an audience of ~500, but I should probably feel more comfortable in the future.

One thing though is that Brushfire doing the commentating was awesome - I'd definitely want to hear him do stuff in the future!

If anyone at the BBQ's reading, sorry I couldn't make it. Same problem I had the whole weekend: no phone and no contacts. At least I learned Cali Tort has their own free hotspot. And now to kill a couple of hours until my bus shows up. I still had more than enough fun. More to say in the morning.

And I'm sorry I didn't get a chance to say bye to you, Wes, and others. For some reason, it slipped my mind that you all would be going to the listening party and that I wouldn't be going to the BBQ and wouldn't be seeing you again. Well, safe trip back.

As always, I looked forward to an epic panel, and you guys, once more, delivered. I think Wes did very well for his first time in front of a large audience. Larry was definitely hilarious as always. I'd like to thank Kroze, Xerol and Dom for the opportunity to help film the panel, as well as the camera (Dom, thanks!), and Xerol for making it possible (by going to get said camera from Club Otaku/JamSpace). I definitely have to try to get an HD Camera of some type in the future for this purpose.

Otakon was a lot of fun. Though honestly, I still see improvements that could be made, especially when it comes to the basically non-existant tokens they mention every year, but don't seem to make use of for voice actor autographs. Still, a very fun 'con, and the better security this year was a welcome addition as well.

Last, but most definitely not least, Echoes of Betrayal Light of Redemption... I haven't listened to it all yet since I didn't have time Saturday night, and then I came home today and just got started listening to it. I've really only previewed a few tracks, but I put them all on my iPhone for work tomorrow. Should be a lot of fun listening to it at work.

What a great close to my vacation.

It's all good, it was implicit ;-) . Good to see you two made it back just fine though!

So this is what I felt was the highlight of the listening party although I missed it - after Upthorn, ThatBlack1, and I left, an ex-roommate of Stevo's decides to trip and fall on Larry while he was on the air mattress and stayed there for a while - while naked.

Great time at Xerol's place earlier today - thanks for hosting us all!

I'm freezing most of the hot dogs/burgers for later use, the salads and stuff aren't going to last though. I'm having another smaller one tomorrow night for some of the MAGFest people still in town, anyone who's still around can come too.

And I had to toss what was left of the pork surprise (now officially called Baltimore-Style Cheesesteak) because the flies really got into it. (Note to self: bring extra foil next time.)

Wow, that was a blast. I would've posted sooner if my internet hadn't been wonky all day yesterday. The panel was a lot of fun and it was good to meet and shake hands with a lot of the people up at the panel. It was also nice not to get blown up by Wes. >>

Wish I could've stayed around longer after the panel to talk, but the people I went to the con with called me shortly afterward and needed me with them. So, sorry I couldn't stay longer and talk.

And yeah, I agree that Wes did quite well for talking in front of a big audience for his first time. Larry was really funny, though all the booing he got was funny too. When he threatened to go in front of the giant speaker again, I was the one who shouted "He'll do it! He'll really do it!"

Big thanks to everyone who set up the panel and participated in it. That was worth going to the convention for itself, I think.

BBQ was a lot of fun. Listening party was a lot of fun. Panel was a lot of fun. Basically, there were many times during that weekend where I sort of just didn't want it to end. (Oh, our Lunar Panel was a success, too!)

I'll be able to post up pics from the BBQ tomorrow evening. Sorry for the delay. KF

A) That grill is all sorts of epic. It's about half the 2/3 the size of "Shorty's" grill, if anyone from the Baltimore area knows who I'm talking about. Best BBQ we have to offer!
B) Way to get a new forum name. I wonder how you pulled that one off :nicework:

I gotta say, I had an awesome time at my first Otakon experience. Made me wish I'd stuck around for more than a day at the con. I knew it was going to be something different, but I was amazed at how satisfying it was just to glance around in entertained awe at all the different cosplays and art people had come up with.
