Wow. That was quick. Teh_goat showed this to me in IRC and I loved it. Had it on repeat for almost two hours. The production on this song is excellent. No muddiness, no instrument clashing, just clean Top 40 rockin goodness. Vocals are witty, well recorded and suit the genre perfectly. The guitar solo is not extravagant, once again fitting the "vocal line improv" soloing that is quite common in songs of this genre.

I am very impressed by this mix. And, to clear up my confusion, this is NOT by Goat. :)

holy shit dude!!

you asked me how to submit a song to this site YESTERDAY!!

HAHAHAHAHA

Anyway, like I told you before, it's pretty damn good. Tight lyrics, decent production, great all around. Nice work!!

Yeah this is really really sweet. I have always wanted to hear a kick ass take on ken's theme, and here we have it. Probably more than I could have ever asked for. I have to admit at first I was skeptical when I read on djp's write up that there were lyrics to this one, being afraid they would ruin an otherwise good remix. But after hearing this, all I can say is - wow. Rock on man. Now all you need is a music video and OCR followers everywhere can vote this onto TRL.

Ken happens to be my favorite character and that theme was stuck in my head. I just checked back here and BLAM! the first Ken theme. I love it, I have listened to it about 5 times in a row and it never gets old.

Easily among one of the best vocal remixes on the site.

Great production, decent mixing and mastering.

I have a tendency to shy away from mixes with lyrics, but this is really well done. I was really impressed by the strong opening. Deserves some major air time, imho! Nice work! :)

Ok, so this started out like numerous mixes, but then BAM!! awesome vocals. There are VERY few remixes on OCR that actually use original lyrics effectively, even fewer that compile them into complete songs. Ken is my favorite player in the SF series, and this song was an amazing tribute to his kickass ability...to kick ass. :) Great job. My only gripe is that sometimes the vocals are hard to understand, or not synched with the music (though that's probably just because of what kind of music I'm used to). This was very well developed overall. 5/5, 5 stars, 100%, whatever you want.

F*%king awesome.

Sometimes lyrical remixes are pretty lame, but this song has shown me just how good they can be. Great job, I look forward to hearing more of your work.

I say with all honesty that this mix is just...outstanding. The mixing, vocals, instrumentation, the whole nine yards...all just fantastic. It's damn near pro-level recordings, hell it pretty much IS there. Anyways, I love rock, and this piece almost reminds me of J-Rock like from FLCL. Mad props to this piece, and I genuinely hope you continue to pump out mixes of this caliber.

Great singing too. Star Salzman..you have competition!

TO's another good thing out of Australia. :-P

Great work, Joe. When I first heard the old version at VGMix, I wasn't too hot on it, but it's be refined nicely swince then and I really enjoyed it. The almost Engrished lyrics make 0 sense but they're fun and flow well, and frankly that's really what counts. High quality work, bro. Hope you have more ambitious stuff like this for the future. Looking forward to playing this on my radio show.

I can see this song as the main intro to Ken's own game. I love how the voice kind of slurs, but not in a retarded lazy way, in a way that completely works, and flows.

The harmonizing around 1:00 remins me of Vertical Horizon's song "Underwater" (which is a great song also btw) during the lyric 'I feel your touch.'

Ridin' down the lone arizona desert kickin ass in my '72 Javelin AMX, with Ken in the passenger seat, mwa haha!

:o Hey, I remember this one! One of my good buddies really wanted it from VGMix, but since I had a hard time sorting through all the SF remixes I gave up. Now it's finally here! I can refer him to the link so he can download it. :nicework:

Anyway, I'm glad you took my earlier suggestion, and asked me about OCR, JD. I love this song even though I'm not a big fan of Street Fighter like this friend of mine. Do another. 8)

Excellent.

For some unknown reason, I seem to remember listening to this one off of VGMix a while back, and not enjoying it.

For that, I can only plead temporary insanity.

This song rocks, and rocks hard. Thank God it came around again so I could re-listen and have my face melted by how much it rocks.

amazing.. you should really get a record label for this. although then it wont be free on OCR. great work. This is more original than a remix. yet the theme is obviously there. creative use of lyrics yet it holds true to the rock theme. well done.

This mix fondles my genitals just right... a sex machine ready to reload like an atom bomb. This mix helps me realise my ken.

and all my friends called me a queer for playing ken when everyone else played akuma and sagat, and other less effeminate characters such as rose and Birdy.

I hope they listen and get in touch with their Ken.

You know...

I'm surprised that in all the comments and reviews, nobody has mentioned the actual official vocal version of the song in question.

Because that's what this had to compete with in my head as I was listening.

Now, obviously, no amateur remix is going to compare to an officially arranged, studio-recorded rock mix with Hironobu Kageyama on vocals.

But I'm not going to hold that against this. Because this was good. I liked it.

Very nice. :)

keep in mind, we are comparing it to the original in game tune... outside the game arrangments by pros are not what we are comparing it to. this is OCremix afterall. its whats in the game that counts.

I usually dislike the vocals I hear on the radio nowadays... you know, the same old rock songs that sound completely alike and are about teenage angst or something.

Although this song has that top 40's sound to it, I can't help but be amazed by how well this was done. Hell, I haven't been this pleased about the vocals in a vg remix since LOZ 2002 - and that was just voice acting.

Damn this is good.

Whoa I think this is the best vocals mix on the site, you guys have great voices!

When I heard the beginning of this song I was thinking. "Thing song would be great with vocals" And then I hear them, I was thinking "Whoa" Keanu Reeves style!

This is sweet, bring me another!

I just have to post a review on this one. As I was downloading the song I saw that DJP said it had lyrics and singing, and I immediately thought to myself "Oh man this is gonna be teh suck!" (Yes I actually said "teh" to myself). I usually hate lyrics in remixes because the recording of the vocals is often quite poor. But not here. It's extremely well done. Everything here is well done. It's one of the more addictive mixes on the site, for sure. It's way better than the Ken Stage arrangement by Hiroaki Yoshida on the awesome Street Fighter Tribute Album (which also had SF tunes arranged by the likes of Takenobu Mitsuyoshi of Daytona USA fame, Yasunori Mitsuda, Yuzo Koshiro, and Ayako Saso among others).

I have finally realized my Ken. I don't know what I'm going to do with it, but at least I've realized it and my therapist tells me that's a step in the right direction!

This is definately one of OC's top mix. If there was such a thing as a Mainstream Video Game Radio Station (not just an online radio), this would be one of those songs that would play around every 7 songs, and you won't get sick of it, right to the end. It takes nothing to relise that this song will be up there with Little Macs Confession.

The guitar is nice; the drums keep the beat; the vocals are clear; the lyrics, while not always clear in meaning, are catchy; and the just the theme behind it is original. Out of 1 out of a 10, if I could give an 11, I would want to give a 12.

My ONLY gripe, (which is minor), is that there aren't this high of quality remixes that I can compare it to.

Now... if only you can make a theme like this for every Street Fighter (II) character...

fuck yeah dude, hot shit. Very well done.

There should be more people going this route with remixes... i.e. really doing something different from the original. Electronica/techno can be cool, but it's nice to know some people appreciate other genres and are willing to put the effort into really transforming a piece of music into something new.

Ken's song is excellent. It is really difficult to take something excellent and change it very significantly and still end up with something excellent. Big up Joe, you're a remix pimp.

I liked this mostly because I'm a fan of Game Over, big time. The problem I had was at the very beginning of the vocals, it seems hollow. It didn't fit.

"Keep fighting for the right of the one you so truly mend".
Mend meaning you have shaped, moulded together as it is talking about Ken and Eliza from the game. They have moulded their bond together therefore they have mended something together.
Therefore it is in perfect context.
Just wanted to clear that up. :)

This song can be described in a single word: infectious. I can't stop listening to it. Even when I'm walking around, I start humming this arrangement. That is a true testimony to its quality. In the technical aspect, I can safely say that the vocals mesh extremely well with the background song. The instruments are well played, and the track is the perfect length. Excellently done.

One of the best vocal mixes on the site. Im still surprised its as good as it is, simply because of my disdain of vocal tracks to vg music.

The song overall stays moderately in place, it would have been nice to have something a bit more extroverted such as a stronger solo or an incredibly over the top build up at the end.

Its still a special song for what it is though.
Great work.

Next its chunli's theme! :p

Man... this piece is awesome.. and you're from Brisbane too! I've heard some other local bands around here and you would kick their assess right off stage. A mate of mine is also a singer/songwriter and is trying to get into the scene too, he's been in a few comps and performances at some hotels, it's a shame cos most establishments just want bands to play covers. Even so, with this talent it's a travesty that jackers like those on Australian Idol get record contracts and you're finding it difficult. Perhaps if you found a good agent it would give you an opening.

As for the song, well.. the rave reviews on this site speak for themselves, I can't add much more but to say this just rocks! Imaginative lyrics and kick-ass guitar, go Ken!

While not similar at all, the only other remix I've liked as much was Mega_Man_2_Chillout_OC_ReMix.mp3, and this rocks a heck of a lot harder.

Put it this way, its good enough to deserve a spot in the CD player at work. I'm not typically picky when it comes to material I find on OCRemix, overall I enjoy 99.9% of it. But its just that.

You download something new, tap to it for a few minutes and say to yourself.. "hm.. this is cool." and the majority of things here are like that, which is good. But then, you have things like the "Ken Song" which are like... How would I describe it. The Ken Song is like that last night stand you wish you never dumped on the corner of South 2nd and Rivet because she was so good.

Well, bad example but you get what I mean. REALLY phenominal stuff here. Great lyrics even though they're cheesy, Really neat vocals. You have to be a little imaginative to think "Johnny Rzeznik" but it does have that type of mystique to it. The guitars don't overkill the vocals either and everything meshes together like gears in a windmill on a comfortable summer day in the middle of... nevermind. And the bass? Really good!

Well, time for work. IE - Ken Song.

Imagine The Ken Song playing from over the counter at a local Domino's Pizza shop. On repeat.

All night long. ^_^

Goddam.. three thumbs up, go Australia!

Seriously, Ken's song is supposed to be untouchable. It's one of very few in any vg for which any remake or remix is not supposed to live up to the original. It's baffling how you dared to tackle it, and end up winning?! Very rare.. my hat is off to you.

The other untouchable song in the game (yeh, SF2 has more than one) is Balrog.. but I'm not saying that lyrics will suit it. Do you dare to take the red pill for a second time, JD?

Ok, this is my first post on these boards, but I have been listening to the remixes on this site for years.

All I have to say about this song is perfect! As a rule I don't like remixed game music with lyrics, I've always found them done way to cheesy or found them uninspiring (although I did keep a few songs because I found them cute or funny). jdproject changed all that, and then some. I wouldn't be surprised to hear this song on the radio.

Not only are the words not overly cheesy, they work! Also, the voice effects used give the song a much more modern and profesional feel. Only a true Street Fighter 2 fan would know this is game music.

Now I've always pictured Ken a metal kind of guy and his music would have hardcore crunching guitars with drums from hell. In that aspect jdproject impresses me again because he has a very alteritive feel and it fuggin' works! AND the drums sound awsome!! (Sorry, I'm a drummer, so I'm naturally picky on drums)

Awsome job jdproject! I look forward to hearing more from you!

First off I wanna say, that the instrumental sound of this mix is nothing short of excellent.

The first time I listened to this song, I was thinking "These lyrics are pretty cheesy, but then I remember throught all the anime and cartoons and think..."Ken was a cheesy sort of guy." And after multiple times of listening to this, they fit, and it doesn't bother me anymore.

Other than this I havent seen anything else from you. (at least I haven't physically found it) even on VGmix.com

From what this song sounds like, Street Fighter has to be one of your top favorite series....and I would suggest you make a series (possibly even an album) of ocremixes for each of the world warriors. But then again, thats only a suggestion.

I listen to most the new songs on OCR like the night they're posted. UNFORTUNATELY, this one slipped by, and I only listened to this because of its mention in the mp3.com interview with DJP.

Anyways...OMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMG.

Simply amazing.

The beginning sounded a little generic to me at first; I almost skipped over the song thinking, "yawn, another stereotyped rock remix". Then the vocals came in and I realized this one was different. The progression, vocals, production, everything is proffessional (or close enough!). I love the alt rock sound of bands like Foo Fighters, Gin Blossoms, etc., and this song is very reminiscent of that style.

I give it a 10/10.

Here's to hoping for more remixes from JD.

Here is a short exceprt of a conversation between myself and a friend of mine:

"So what did you think?"
"That song was pretty bad-ass. Where did you find it?"
"Would you believe a video game music remixing website?"
"What?! That's music from a video game?!?"
"Yup."
"NO WAY!!! THAT'S AWESOME!!!"

Okay granted, video games have rarely if ever been acknowledged for their music. More and more games are licensing actual music for their games (EA Sports, Gran Turismo series, SSX series to name a few) but that doesn't count. Games with ORIGINAL soundtracks are more often than not passed up in favor for a cd in the stereo and that's a damn shame. Especially with this song. Ken is in a tie for my favorite SF character (with Guile), and the first time I heard this, I think I creamed my pants.

Can I give it an 11/10?

That's insane. "You're Ken"? Ken should be a metaphor for inner strength or power, not intended as a name. Fair enough, it's called "Ken's song", but there's no need to personalise it to the extent where I'm listening to a song dedicated to some yellow-permed moron. I want to realise my ken, not realise I am him.

I think you're taking this a little too seriously. It's more like the song Ken would listen to before he goes into a street fight, of self-empowerment. If you want it to inspire you somehow just take Ken as a generic name. Realize you're mecca!

Version 1 was better. Though i'm not a big fan, it's nice and the vocals are ok, but I don't think this pop'ish sound fit well with the cool Ken song from sf2. Even if the production is good for a one man project, it's executed in a very standard nu Pop/Rock way, and it doesn't have enough "soul" or special moments that makes it memorable. Still, a good production and a nice pop song. Unfortunately, i don't think it's very special.

I personally thought the first one was better. It was more rockish, if that makes any sense. The drums sound a little bit off, as if they're half a second slow behind the guitars. The transition at 2:45 seems a bit abrupt, but at 3:30, the stuff till the end kicks ass.

I listened to the other music on your site too. I think you sound a lot better when you let your voice and guitar do the work. I guess I'm trying to say that sometimes simpler is better. It sounded like the second version of The Ken Song was put through some kind of remixer program and a bunch of added effects were added.

BTW, Wake Up is my favorite song of yours. :)

1: I've had a copy of it for a long time now and love it to the max. The second verson? OH DEAR LORD! I don't cuss but that was way beyond cuss worthy. If that version was ever sent to the radio or whatever, they would kick you even before the second verse. At very least if they had heard the first version before that. No offense, but why did you do it? Do the spew ( :vomit: ) doesn't do justice. You get past the intro and... what happened to the volume? Go on and a chunk of the lyrics has been instrumented out. There's a ding in there that sounds like you had an error message pop up.

Beside all that, the life is gone from it. Is there a copy of the original on the site too? Haven't looked yet but there needs to be. Sorry about the bad review but I was truely forcing myself to hear the whole thing.

So I end with...

The first one was phenominal stick with that one.

Joe, sounds like you have alot of talent outside of the OCRemix scene! Would fit perfectly in the current pop-focused industry. ;)

Vocals reminds me alot of "That Thing You Do." Wickedly catchy.

Have to agree with a post a ways back. "Keep fighting for the right of the one you so truly mend." Replace the words with some synonyms and you are also saying, "Fight for the right of the one you sincerely repair?"

"Mend" in a relationship sense means you are fixing one that is broken... It really does not work, how you are using it.

How about, "Keep fighting for the right of the love that you defend?"

Not that I was really listening to the lyrics, but he brought it up :D

The second version sounds just like what it is - a remix. Stick with the original.

Anyway, great song. It compelled me to rejoin the forums just to congratulate you on it. You really have some skills there. ;)

Nope, sorry, the first version is better. This is a lot like when Silent went back to redo In the Atrium. While you think you're making it better, you're taking away the charm that mix had to begin with. The second version sounds too dark and at times, there isn't a lot going on. There's some volume problems, the vocals being too quiet while the drums are overly loud in others. Personally, I liked the bridge better when there were lyrics. The guitar chugging isn't that great sounding, either. If anything, I want to say this sounds almost like a sellout version, however detrimental that may be.

...that sound like Windows commited an error stuck out like a sore thumb. In fact, I thought my computer was actually going to crash.

Correct me if I'm mistaken but on the second go-around of the chorus, I'm hearing a piano. Am I right on that? I like that.

I love the original version, however. Enthusiastic, empowering, very rockin'. There are some elements that you could take from this newer version to combine with the old one to make an all-around awesome, straight up badass mix. I like the ending on the new one better and if I'm right with the piano being in the chorus, I'd say add those to the original and make sure the production is tight on all ends and you'd have quite possibly one of the greatest, if not the greatest remix ever.

when I first listened to this song, I thought it was rad. I still think its rad.

I now have a few reservations however.

while they are fine, I would like there to have been more snap to the snare, and pop to the bass drum. The drums also seem kind of low mixed.

This song screams I want to do a bass solo.

otherwise this song is 100% awesome. Great attention to transforming a well known peice into something new and exciting.

This is by far my favorite remix of all the available remixes on this site. I find myself humming this tune throughout the day, and it's been quite some time since I've downloaded this song from the site.

When I first saw this song had lyrics, I figured I would be quickly closing it once the vocalist starting singing, but I was very, very wrong. The lyrics were funny, well made, and sung well for this genre.

This is a superb remix. Excellent. Wonderful. Yes, oh yes.

you can go for weeks listening to the same OC Remixes over and over again then comes that one new mix that you haven't heard yet and it sparks your interest in mixes again. This is one of those mixes that just amazes you with what people can do with video game music. A very impressive remix with an awesome vocal job. A must hear.

Hi, your song is just too great, I listened to it at max volume and it freaked me out! But could we have the Music only version, it's rocking hard with the lyric but I would like to have a no lyric version...Is that possible? THANK!

Pretty good, agreed. Obviously, I love the tune. The lyrics are OK, but overall, it's a 10/101

Totally awesome song, now I really can't hear Ken's theme any other way. The guitar is amazing.

Before I read the lyrics, I assumed the singer was saying "Takes nothing to realize you're Ken". I mused on that for a bit, and soon the song gained a rather profound meaning. It was no longer pulling me into Ken's esoteric battle, it was showing me how my trials, while entirely my own, were only superficially different from the subject's. It was as if the song was actually a metaphor for the universality of the human struggle.

Then I read the lyrics. And I lol'ed.
That's one thing cleared with jd. It's meant to be "realise you're Ken." Just a little bit of poor grammar entering the lyrics. ;)
May we continue to realize our Ken regardless. And twice on weekends.

This song is iconic. If you have a playlist, let alone a computer, that this isn't on, then you are wrong. It's one solid rock track, and no matter how you hear the lyrics the whole thing is f-ing awesome.

So... how's that Ryu Song coming along, eh jd?

A super OCR classic- great clean production and some cool lyrics. Doing a cover of this arrangement at last year's Magfest was totally fun. Nice lyrics, good arrangement and additions, and good guitar tone. Consider my Ken realized.

That guitar! Damn, that guitar sounds so crisp and high quality, it's fantastic! I can actually hear the whole Top 40 thing and it really works with this. The lyrics are good and fit the character. Nothing against any other ReMix on the site, cause there are a lot that sound like this, but this one in particular just has that professional radio sound and you can almost picture being played for no reason other than it was good. Absolutely one of the best ReMixes of Ken's theme. Can you say I've enjoyed this? Shoryuken!
