The Doom Remix Project is the best!
We're spitting fireballs on all the rest!
If you don't believe me, wait and see.
It'll feel like we hit you with a BFG.
WOOO! Go Team!

DARK SIDE OF PHOBOS
Revamped and Under New Management

All the necessary information:

Point of No Return (from this point you cannot drop from the project): January 17th

Final WIPS (I say WIP for a reason) due: Jan 31st

Evaluation period: Feb 1st+ (during this time other mixers will critique the WIPS and give input for improvement on the songs. I don't know how long this period will last. However, this is a vital time for the songs, as it allows for touching up and perfecting the songs. Thus: DO NOT DELETE YOUR SONG FILES, FLP FILES, ETC>I know there are a few people who already have, but if you havent DON"T.
here is a list of potential seeders. if you have bandwidth to give, please sign up. If you have HOSTING, that is even better.

Mythril Nazgul
Geko
Richter (mirror)
KyrenGraves

Global Trance is designing the page, and he needs good high quality front face portraits of the mixers. Anyone also deeply involved in the project without necessarily being a mixer (caleb and gt himself come to mind) will also have a portrait on the site. I will also need a short paragraph of information on yourself and a short paragraph on your mix(es) for my write ups for the site. Please try and get those in asap

Keep on mixing folks. this project is coming along VERY well. Kudos to you all.

Also, again. Think about transitions. If you want to segue into the next song, please contact the mixer of the next track and work something out.

THE OLD SHIT

The songs
Midis available here (http://www.afn.org/~afn04133/doom1.htm)

The Rules
+Remixers must meet the deadlines given to them. If you cannot meet these deadlines, please take your name from the project as soon as possible.
+Multiple entries for a track are allowed. Voting on the tracks will occur AFTER the FINAL deadline for tracks.
+Mixers must check in with their progress at least once a week. Failure to do so, and failure to respond within three days of a PM will result in the mixer being dropped from the project

The Current List of Remixers Involved. If you do not meet a deadline, you will be dropped from the list. I am already questioning some of the names on the list, as to their “existence”ablilty, but I will go with the benefit of the doubt and give them one week. Once a track becomes open, feel free to claim it.

THE NEW DEADLINES
Have a WIP of substantial length by December 10th
SONGS MUST BE COMPLETED BEFORE January 24th*
Tentative date

Also, anyone needing server space is welcome to upload remixes at PaletteSwap (http://www.paletteswap.com). You can also attach your working files (like Fruity Loops or Reason files) there so other folks can help you with them or whatever.

(Outdated) Doom REMIX Website - http://www.peoplesremix.com/doom (contact Caleb if you need webhosting as well)

Apologies for the new thread. I need to be able to control the thread title in order to run the project fully.

This post will be updated with new Information as soon as it becomes available.

Use this thread to check in, discuss the project, post WIPS, comment on WIPS and post final mixes.

If there is any information I have missed, please tell me.

If not, I could probably start again.

I have done an orchestral version of the Computer Station song and would like to enter it into the project. You can get it @ www.soundclick.com/deusmachina. That version is @ 128 kbps . You can e-mail me to get the 192 kbps version @ deusmachina@ecstasisband.com.

Thank you for your time and consideration

TO - Because, at this point in the Project, we aren't concerned with quality control, yet. Quality control will probably begin after the WIP deadline. Therefore. the decision to keep the song in the project is yours alone. If you feel it is good enough, stick with it. If not, create a new one. (PS: I think it sounds decent, but I know it was unfinished.)

Sanguineuniverse - I'll add your name to the list. Is that a final song, or a WIP?

Where's the link to the actual project site? Am I blind? Right in front of me someplace?....The project site was originally going to be at http://www.peoplesremix.com/doom and was going to be created by myself and aluminum (mostly aluminum, as I suck at web design). Then the project stagnated and no one ever contacted either of us about anything regarding it what-so-ever...

As it stands, I'll also host any song for the project on my webspace, so if you can't host your mix you have two different places that will gladly host it for you.

Did klm09 just disappear, by the way?

Well, I had a 'substancial wip' posted a long time ago, but it's not really breathtaking. I'll post a newer version before the wip deadline. If it's not good enough, I'll either start from scratch again, or someone else might take e2m1 if he can do better.

Ana, update the link in your sig!

Awesome! Got some mad confirmation from: Carbunk1e, beatdrop, Adhesive_Boy, Nasenmann, EvilHorde!

Also, the first song, from Beatdrop (which I will listen to tonight).

Furthermore, I have no idea where klm09 went. Which is why i made a new thread, so I can control the front post.

Updating first post with some more info...

I need confirmation from:

E1M2: Nuclear Plant (Xelebes):
E1M4: Command Control (Mr. Anderson):
E1M8: Phobos Anomaly (Ralphis):
E1M9: Military Base (DamienKrauss)
E2M2: Containment Area (Peeples):

E3M2: Slough of Despair (Larsec)
E3M8: Dis (chester?)

2. The End (Episode 3 Outro iirc) (Bart Klepka)

Hello.

I've been kinda silent over the last few days. Partied last night andnow feeling a bit tired (8 hours of dancing and 6 hours of work coupled with a few hours of other stuff only to get 6 hours of sleep.)

Anywho... I'm gonna take another stab it. I'm thinking I'll need a whole new approach on the song. I might try an off-beat techno piece... see if that will do the trick.

Navi

Just a quick bump. Does anyone want to design the website and or have any ideas for it?

EvilHorde
11-12-2004, 01:32 PM
EvilHoarde, is that your final track?

Well... If it meets the standards of this project then its ok for me. Too bad there hasn´t been much feedback on the updated version, so I really don´t know what to think about it.

I´m a bit concerned with the overall volume of the song. Is it too silent? Besides that I´m pleased with it and I´m ready to declare it as the final song...
But I´m begging for feedback.

I have En Sabah Nur (aka DJ Apocalypse) and Mr. Andersen on my MSN list. I'll be sure to contact them when they get online.

On the matter of the tune I've chosen and been assigned on, I'm finding it more difficult as time goes on the creativity I desire to pursue on the piece is going downhill. This is not good.

I'll keep trying but it is not looking good.

It needs to be jacked up volume wise. Also, it seems sort of like a straightforward cover of the song. I haven't listened to it in depth but I couldn't make out a lot of arrangement.

I think we need to set a volume standard, by which the other songs should all follow, in order to maintain continuity. Also, if you plan on having your song segue into the next song, please plan that out now.

Xel, I'm going to wait on confirmation before I cross em off. Larsec, I'm confirming ya.

WHAM BLAM.
I updated my mix. Pumped up the volume and compressed the heck out of it. The overall sound is really something else now, really gave the song some energy there... AND I took off the boring ambient sounds from the intro, so it starts from silence now...

Don't forget the first deadline, people. And I'm still waiting on some confirmations.

Also, Suzu's track is now open, to anyone who wants to take on a second track (TO, analoq?)

also...

www.mythrilnazgul.com/DoomProject.mp3

I'm thinging of calling it "Ghost in the Lab". It's rough, right now.

Also. I had an idea. It's not a concrete idea but I was just wondering if anyone is planning on putting vocals in their remix? I got this idea last night, where the entire project is dark and moody, and the last song on the track is a sort of mournful closing track with vocals (Female?). Just an idea. I dont know if anyone will actually make a vocal remix.

If I press the Text Music on that site it plays a midi that is the same as the d_victory midi from the zip file... Which probably means Suzu and Bart were working on remixes of the same midi...

The Orichalcon
11-18-2004, 08:12 AM
yes, but the episode 3 outro music is the music from the bunny scene. That's what Bart should have been working on.

2. The End (Episode 3 Outro iirc) (Bart Klepka) CONFIRMED

is the new track listing. I dropped peeples, ralphis, damien krauss and chester. They can come back and reclaim the tracks, but i havent heard anything from them, so....those tracks are fair game.

Guys, :) I should start seeing some new WIPS in dis thread soon. As a sign of my respect:

Tell me what you think, so far. Be honest.

Wow Mythril, I love this so far. Sounds more like Ghost in the Shell or some other anime then Doom, but its cool noetheless. The little vocal bits seemed a bit wierd at first, but they worked better than I initialy thought they would. Ending seems somewhat abrupt though.

Put down TO and Carbie for the respective songs. Also, i added Larsec as another remixer of the Text theme, as he has a WIP that he just showed me, and he's gonna get ahold of a female vocalist, apparently (the same one who sings for Mahoney of c64 mixing fame) to record vocals for it.

Anduril, thats exactly what I was going for, as you can tell by the title. It's not over. I just havent finished it.

ArseAssassin had a really nice remix of containment area. Somehow klm09 just crossed him out of the list as Peeples appeared. It's absolutely worthy to be onboard, just ask him, Myth.

Man, right now I honestly don't know why I picked that track. I can't hear those 007ish chords anymore. For the record, I uploaded my WIP at soundclick:

http://www.soundclick.com/bands/4/skoshumusic.htm

Don't find it that great. I'm a little busy these days, so I don't know if I'll be able to start something new or develop this one nicely. Maybe it would be better to put a 'free' behind e2m1.

Also, i added Larsec as another remixer of the Text theme

I don't know if there is any size or length limits to this project but in principal you could have 4 text music remixes since there are 4 episodes and the theme playes at the end of each one (Right? Can't remember for sure). So, given that they varied enough from eachother, wouldn't it be possible to include both TO's and my own (and Bart Klepta's if that is indeed the song he is working on)?
My own has kind of an "The End" feel to it, so that could work as the last one...

If this is actually going to be a soundtrack or music WAD, then there is only room for one text music theme, since there's only one space. unless someone knows how to reprogram it.

I'm planning on compiling a music WAD for it, even if it's only for myself, and only one remix for each song will fit.

I came up with this idea.

TO, your songs are usually dark moody...err, I hate to make an error in genre judgement here but...ambientish sounding electronica pieces, right? Why don't you create something like that and then it will FADE into Larsec's section. We can either have it as two remixes, or one long track (I don't think one seven minute track will harm anyone). What say you both to that?

Larsec
11-24-2004, 05:31 PM
What say you both to that?

At this point in time, I don't like that idea, but that might change when I hear what TO is doing. I still think the idea i proposed is better but it's your call, MN, and if there will only be room for one mix in the end I'll pull mine out, since I wasn't supposed to be working on it in the first place :)

If that doesnt work, I have no qualms about putting both mixes on the actual project. TO can choose to remove one for the WAD, but in terms of the actual project, I see no reason not to have both tracks on IF IT BECOMES NECESSARY.

As of right now, I think i've mailed this notification to everyone, but if I missed you, I'll go back and double check.

The Doom Remix project is finally moving to Site Projects! I talked to Protricity and he deemed it far along enough, and solid enough (Yes!) to be moved to SP. If you don't see it in GD anymore, be sure to check Site Projects.

On a personal note, I'm glad this project is back on its feet and I hope I'm doing the best I can to run it. If there is anything you have a real problem with, contact me and let me know. Also, I can't hold this project up on my own. Everyone involved is doing a great job of getting WIPs into the thread and confirming themselves, saving me some trouble.

If you need WIP assistance, there are many people you can look to. I won't name names, because that would be rude, but OCR is filled with people willing to give you tips on mixing, arranging, mastering, etc.

Remember! The first deadline approaches fast! I want a significant WIP (work in progress) by that deadline. What is significant, you may ask? Significant, to me, would be more than two minutes worth of the track, reasonably complete. Remember, you have time until the final deadline. If you finish your songs early, clean them up, polish them, make them shine.

This isn't a half assed fad project; if it was, there would be no point in me keeping this thing alive. I would have let it die with klm's incarnation of the thread. This project has loads of potential and I know it will sound good in the end. Here is the projected timetable I have set up:

December 10th - 1st WIP Deadline

In between this - (Get started on website, tentative title of project, etc)

January 24th - FINAL SONG DEADLINE

January 24th-February 4th:

Vote on vote needing songs
Decide on the track list
Finalize the Web site
Finalize the cover art
mixers opinions on the other songs on the project

The website is going to require: graphics (I might be able to do those), Mixer Bios, Web space, etc. The album title? Who knows, now. Album cover? We can worry about these when the time comes, but I would like them to be in the back of everyones minds.

Okay, this just sucks.

As some of you may already know, I had an almost finished WIP and I even uploaded it on my server a few months back. Since no one showed any interest, I eventually deleted it, having it on my computer and all. As a matter of fact, I tried to re-upload it to Mikseri a few days ago, but I had some trouble with mp3 conversion, so I decided to try to fix the problem later.

Now, the problem with this is that somehow my dad managed to format the C-drive while trying to install Linux or whatever. That means that approximately two years worth of my work is gone and I'm left with nothing but few random mp3-files that I have uploaded to Mikseri. There was a shitload of WIPs that I was planning to release and, of course, my almost finished E2M2 remix. I don't even have a fucking mp3.

Right now I'm trying to get Windows working along with FLStudio. My regkey is propably also gone and my password for FL members area. Even if I manage to get them working, all my VST's, soundfonts and samples are gone.

This doesn't mean that I'm off the project though, I'm trying to restart working on E2M2 ASAP and I'll try to at least get a rough sketch done by deadline. But yeah, I'm pissed off right now.

Always take the truckdrivers code, Arse. Backing up is an essential part of the work.

I've lost my share of files before. While I was working on the Total War Soundtrack, my harddrive crashed and I lost every single file, including some finished. Luckily that just made me start over with experience so it turned out better.

Now I back most of my essentials up. Since I know that losing everything isn't the end of the world, but it can sure put you back and make you feel like crap. :)

I'll work on something and see if I can come up with something good but this does not mean I've called the track. If you want to take this track by all means do so.

EDIT: Started preliminary work on the song. So far I'm thinking two part acoustic guitar, I don't know about percussion yet because I suck at programming drums. If I get farther along and I decide it needs drums I'll probably just collab with someone to make sure they'll sound good. Even though this is "Dis" it's going to have the feel of the slower songs from the Doom OST.

This is good, 'cause I haven't even been able to get Windows running, much less started another WIP. I'll post it as soon as I get home.

Arse, matey, you got some good stuff there. I reeeally like the spooky atmospheric whistlesounds. The constantly filtered tricky dnb beats don´t do the trick for me, but thats just because its not my thing. BUT they go well with the track so they also have my blessing.. YEAY. The tracks keeps on rolling quite nicely. NICE. Veeeery nice...

And what comes to my contribution to the project; I´ve thought up some title suggestions.

Aircraft shred (As in aircraft SHED=hangar, and SHRED=playing guitar fiercely. And yes, I know its far fetched...)

AND the other which I´m not so fond of (although I´m not a HUGE fan of the 1st one either) but it just crossed my mind accidentally :

Runway to hell

(Oh god it´s even cheesier when I see it written! Agghh...:D)

So, anyway, tell me what you think..

Why don't ya name it Perkele? :D
No, seriously, I like the last one. It's hell-y enough, fits with your remix.

And, maybe a little off-topic, but did you play the quick soloes in the real tempo, or did you record it first slowly, then raise the tempo? 'Cause I've ever couldn't play it that fast. ALMOST that fast, but not yet...

Something with perkele would be nice, I agree. Like Perkele´s Hangar... Well... hmm...

Anyway, I played the fast parts with half the tempo, and they were still kinda difficult to play on time. If you slow it down you hear that there are real melodies in those quick parts, not just basic SUPERFAST heavy guitar soloing.

I mean, I´m good but not that good! (Just kidding, I suck with the guitar)

bill: the second half sounds kind of messy, but i like what you are going for so far. If you need any samples, contact me on AIM.

ab: your link isn't working for me. I'll hit you up on AIM or something, and you can send it my way.

TO: Sounds great so far.

Nousentre: It's coming along well. If you want to, you can get into contact with someone on this forum who is a drummer, or can sequence some nice drums for ya? Keep working on it.

As for myself, after my finals this week, i'm going to head back to work on my WIP and hopefully make it sound a lot better.

One thing I have noticed is the abundance of Guitarists on this project. Thus, if anyone needs guitar on their mix, i can only assume that another would be willing? ;)

Also, remember to take the transitions into consideration. At least a couple of tracks should flow into each other.

Well, here's what I had in mind for the site. The artists page would have a "wall" of eyes (being the mixers eyes) and you would click on the eyes to open up a small window with a portrait and a small paragraph of information on you. What say you, mixers?

edit: to clarify, a full front face portrait would work best. Preferable something semi professional. ;)

for example:
BEATDROP:

would work (sans finger)

Most people have digital cameras or know someone who does. Please try and get a picture to me or G-T sometime soon. Also, i need each of you to write out a mini bio of yourself, and a short write up on your song (which i will use in my write up). Post it here, if necessary.

K, just to give this monkey an update, I talked to djpretzel a few minutes ago about linking to "doomproject.ocremix.org" where "doom project" would be the title of the project. Because of this, and the fact that GT is working on the site as we speak, i think it's necessary for us to come up with a name for the project in the "soon" future. So here, I will list all the opinions given thus far. I want everyone to give input on these or add their own.

The Doom Remix project
Dimensional Rift (joker)
Solitary Confinement (joker)
sretoohs fo gnik si mood (sith lord aku)
Sretoohs'Fo'Gnik' (sith lord aku)
Rip and Tear (Caleb)
Chainsaw: The Great Communicator (Caleb)
Now I'm Radioactive (Caleb)
Big-Mouthed Floating Thingies (TO)*
Packin' 80 Pounds Of Heavenly Joy.(TO)*
Packin' 80 Pounds Of Heavenly Music (TO)*
Packin' 21 Track Of Heavenly Joy (TO)*
Thy Ears Consumed (Geko)
Ear Deep in the Dead (Geko)
Icon of Song (Geko)

TO - ElectroCute Bunny (http://www.doulifee.com/prc/DRP_TO_-_ElectroCute_Bunny.mp3)

I've updated this. I'm happy with where it's heading. The discrepancies are intentional too, it's not your speakers. :)

Also Mythril, Since this is the last track of the lot, do you want it to finish a certain way? The way I currently have it, it fades in and out with a synth line, which is the easiest way to transitition a piece. I'll get in touch with Larsec and find out how he's ending his piece, we'll work something.

I was thinking, are we going to have a bonus track at the end of the lot?

Nousentre, I know someone that can sequence some awesome drum tracks. How does this sound: you record your bass and guitar tracks then I get him to lay down a drum track? However, knowing him, he might go ahead and add his own touch to the song, which wouldn't be a bad thing. How does this interest you?

The Orichalcon
12-14-2004, 11:56 AM
hmm. I'd have to take a look around. I live in south-west australia which is the arid part, but I'm in the middle of a city.

It depends on whether you'd want a landscape or just a small area. the landscape would be hard since it usually has a few shrubs in it. But a small area would be a piece of cake.

I'll ask the girl when she next comes online, I haven't seen her in a little while.

Edit: The closest arid area is Sturt, and that's a good 800km drive, so no I won't be able to go there.

A figure standing with her back to the camera and her hands wrapped around her body, perhaps with blood dripping from the palm. In the background, a martian landscape with the moons in the sky, tinted red. I'll see what can be done about the bg....The track listing would be at the bottom left, where the lines are. It's a good idea, but it'd be difficult to do.

I'm more for the character in isolation of a black background. Sort of like a gollum stance, hunched down, protruding out of the darkness with a demonic look.

of course, we could all dress up in imp costumes and growl at the camera. :D That'd be a great cover actually.

Okay okay.. very funny...
Anyway, what info should there be on the small paragraph? Could you provide us a form of some kind or do we just tell something about us freely? I think it would maybe make it easier to read if it had a structure... like

as for the song, a small description of the song. This will help me when I write a write up of the song for the site.

Sounds great. Should I do something to the intro so the transmission would fit better?
I mean the fade in is kinda boring after a cool transmission like that. It should maybe start with a bang like in a movie trailer sort of way... Whaddya think?

And I just thought... My track incidentally ends in a similar way... the music stops and then theres the sudden "scarescream". I don´t know if its important but its an interesting detail I happened to notice.

AND YET, if a few mixers do the transmission it would be kinda funny to add inside humor to it. Like hide little jokes in there to the transmission... YEE-HAW. Too bad I´m propably not gonna be able to participate in the making of the transmission cause I have no mic. Well, if it comes to that I might be able to use the headphones but.. WELL...

Hey everyone, I've was just lookin through the forums and stumbled across this. This is so cool!! I've always loved Doom and its music and I just wanna wish you guys the best of luck in producing this! There's just a little insignificant something that I'd like to add to all this... http://www.doomworld.com/classicdoom/info/music.php
That page contains all the official and original names for all the songs in Doom. I hadn't seen the real names anywhere on this thread so I thought I'd let you in. They might help you think of names for your own remixes or you might wanna include them somehow in the track listings or in the CD booklet or whatnot. And I was just wondering if there is a page where I can find all of the completed tracks and WIP's all on the one page? That would be great.
So yeah, good luck guys and keep up the awesome work!!

Peace

I received a reply from my model friend.

About being the "cover model" :p Sure, I don't mind doing it. It will be a bit of a buzz I guess!!! I guess it does depend on what the guy wants me to do, but I can look demonic haha. Would he be editing the picture? Cuz i have a mate who is really good at photomanipulation and he would probably be able to do something to make me demon-like if you dont have anyone that can do it (although I'm sure you would have someone that could!) Ryan has a pet snake (actually two at the moment - he's borrowed his friends as well) so I could even get a picture of me with a couple of snakes wrapped around my arm, if that sounds cool and demon looking! You can suggest it to your friend anyway.

Let me know what you want, draw up some readable poses in paint along with explanations to make them clear and I can get them taken for you. I assume you can digitally manipulate the photo the way you want. Snakes Yes/No. And tell me how many photo's you want and how big. I'll get them here asap.

I'm not down with snakes in this case seeing that they have nothing to do with Doom. If everyone else wants it that's cool with me. Also if her friend is willing to photo-manipulate her go ahead. It'll save me trouble. However if he does, I would like the original photo + the manipulation incase I don't like it. 8) The rest is up to everyone else.

I still need the sketches to send to her so she knows what to take.

I'll just send the originals. Do you want her in front of a greenboard, or just anywhere? Lemme know?

The rough sketch Mythril did for how he wanted the girl posed.

Well I can't get her to pose unless I know how you want it.

Snap snap, on the spot.

I'm more for the character in isolation of a black background. Sort of like a gollum stance, hunched down, protruding out of the darkness with a demonic look

that didnt seem like a bad idea. I'll come up with a scetch tomorrow.

Since my previous suggestions for titles were jokes I'll suggest something for real now:

The 21 Layers of Hell (with this one the track listing could go along with the theme ie. "Layer 1: Evil Horde - Mix Title...")
For the Prince (this has a double meaning: The Prince of Darkness or Bobby Prince)
Eleven Years in Hell (Doom is 11 years old)
Melophobia (fear of music)

And if no one has volunteered to be the voice in the garbled radio transmission I'd be more than happy to do it. At least then I'm contributing somehow.

Melophobia (fear of music)

Hmm.. We could try to twist this and include Phobos to "phobia". Like Melophobos... Okay, a really bad example but still. Phobia and Phobos are so close together we might get something out of it... But I´m not in a creative mood right now apparently..
WELL....
We seem to be having so many title suggestions its gonna be really hard to just pick one. But its good to have choices...

BTW:
The 21 Layers of Hell (with this one the track listing could go along with the theme ie. "Layer 1: Evil Horde - Mix Title...")
I kinda like this one.

I would like all the mixers to check back in, in the thread, in the next few days please.

edit: with an idea of progress, please.

also: Danny B has offered his vocal skills for anyone that needs a vocalist for their track. get into contact with him if you can, via his secret AIM account and maybe something could come of it.
