I was wondering, playing video games have gotten me into many other things outside of gaming. "Age of Empires" got me into history more than school ever managed to, "Ogre Battles 64" got me into Dungeons and Dragons, and "Final Fantasy VI" and "The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time" got me into storytelling like nothing else.
I could go on about how I now listen to remixes all the time thanks to gaming...
So, what have games gotten you into? Hobbies, jobs, or other forms of entertainment you never would have tried if not for games?

Basic music theory.

I'm not exactly the right sort of mind-set for it, though...

Stupid project, making me learn things related to it...

Video games got me into music and an overall appreciation of the arts, Parasite Eve and Xenosaga got me into microbiology and neuroscience, RPGs got me into reading and creative writing, fighting games got me into physical fitness and martial arts.

Video games got me into video games. I recently graduated from a game development college program. 3 years. No job yet tho.

FFIV completely changed me as a child. It was quite literally a religious experience.

Got me into robotics, computers, music, kung fu, and parkour (not directly but seeing in game characters doing gravity defying stunts... well... yeah... Never thought about doing it myself, but I have a friend who's teaching me now)

Final Fantasy Legend I on the Game Boy got me into script writing, creative writing, and comic strip drawing.

Sonic I on the Genesis got me into physical fitness, especially running. :<

Foremost, music.

Fighting games of all sorts got me into martial arts; Sonic got me into running; Jet Grind Radio/JSRF got me into graffiti art and rollerblading; Tony Hawk makes me want to skateboard but I haven't learned yet; more I can't recall.

I played Final Fantasy VII during a very significant period of my life and I feel that it strongly influenced my career path. I pretty much stopped what I was doing and decided to try and help save the tiger, which is in danger of imminent extinction due to habitat loss, prey depletion and poaching for traditional Chinese medicine. Nanaki (my favourite character of any game) and his situation probably had it's effect as well. The game, putting aside the characters and their individual stories, had a strong focus on the importance of life and the planet which sustains it. I figured if I cared, I should strive to save the planet in my own way. I'd rather be the hero than the person that stands back and does nothing.

Granted, there are many factors that influenced me, but FFVII definitely comes to mind.

Killing people, for sure. Video games reward violence. Life can too.

Kidding, but not if Jack Thompson asks.

Video games got me into video games. Basically they gave me the career path that I was seeking and that was back in like sixth grade or something.

I would also say that helped get me more into science fiction.

Electronica, rock (sort of, my love for rock was already starting to gather momentum before that) and VG music in general. Deus Ex and Unreal Tournament were the two that kicked it off.

Video games helped me lose 58 pounds and, in just 15 minutes, saved me more than 15% in car insurance!

Seriously tho, they convinced me to pursue gaming journalism. Now, I just wish I had a game plan (har).

It's gotten me into playing and writing music (seriously, without it I wouldn't care about music, much). It's sad, but true :<.

Remixing.

Though to be honest, I didn't know that's what it was called back when I started learning to play things like the main theme from Ghouls 'N Ghosts, "BMG 6" from Master of Monsters, and the ending theme from Castlevania II: Simon's Quest on piano/keyboard. I was just interpreting the multiple instruments into a version that could be played with two hands.

Gaming got me into reading.

You have no idea how frustrating it is to play SNES rpgs like Lufia and 7th saga when you can't read (and are 4 or 5 years old)!

RPGs were amazing for what language they taught... nowadays, I'm not sure if the language used is at all accessible to young kids.

Videogames were a huge inspiration in my young years for drawing. Ever since I came up with my one character I had him appear in many videogame ideas, just like Mario HAS to appear in just about EVERYTHING.

Videogames also destroyed my neighbourhood peace for some reason. Once I had my own SNES and Donkey Kong Country 3 all hell broke loose in the streets and kids started to hate each other (true story).

They also contributed to years of isolation and insomnia, which I'm still paying for today :D x_x argh!

But mostly good stuff came from it :)

Ditto. Along with the sleepless nights and a general decline in work eithic and motivation.

It also got me into some of the most hilarious times of my life

Unreal Tournament FTW.

and of course music, and this site. Video game music means more to me than video games do at this point in my life.

I hear that. I seem to only replay some games now because OCR has changed the way I see their soundtracks. Lot's of times, when I play a new game, I look forward to going on OCR right after to find the remixes for that game.
