This was Rexy's original project, but she has been MIA for a couple years now. Since I am more active in this community, I am going to take the reigns. I have made this thread because it is a hassle to update a project when the person in charge is just not around. Let's get the ball rolling again!

CoE is a compilation project of the first three Dragon Warrior/Dragon Quest games. Koichi Sugiyama is the composer and has composed some of the most unique video game music to date, I love his stuff. Koichi was born in 1931 guys. Let's get this project out before he kicks the bucket!

This is a concept album, with emphasis on flow, please be open to adhering to project guidelines for the sake of the album as a whole.

Note to Musical Artists

I've been thinking about this a lot over the past few months, and now that there is more than ample interest in this project, I want to make some guidelines for you awesome musicians to defer to. I've given it a lot of thought, and instead of beating around the bush and confusing anybody when they have put months into a song, I am going to lay it all out for you, what I am looking for, my "vision" lol.


1. No symphonic or orchestral tracks will be accepted. It has been done to death with Dragon Quest music. Let's go for something different. Besides (and no offense), I doubt none of you could better than what has already been done by Mr. Sugiyama himself and the London Philharmonic Orchestra.
2. I want this album to flow. That is, once some more concrete tracks are selected (by me) as more centerpiece songs, I would appreciate trying to get each song to flow, one to another. This is not specifically required for every track, but as this project comes together and becomes more cohesive, I will be contacting each of you to figure out placement and ways to make this album as a whole, more fluid. More like a project, less like a collection of random songs.
3. Do not stray too far from source material. In other words, make sure your goal with music is to showcase the original song's latent merits, adding emphasis to the pleasure you got out of listening to the original. The goal here is to do the original song as much justice as possible. Interpretation is great, and of course can bring out the greatness of the source, but it always comes secondary to honoring the original. I want you to view each song as a delicate and important piece of music that you want nothing more than to show everyone its true musical merit.
4. Lean towards more organic, acoustic, rock oriented and more realistic sounding styles of music. Instrumentals would be nice. Electronic is also acceptable of course, but corny/dancy songs are discouraged. Synthy stuff is great, but use them to add tension or a "badass" feel to your music. Also lean towards conveying a real sense of atmosphere in your music. Your source tune should be able to give you an idea of what mood you are going for.
5. Be creative. Yes, I said honor the source, but I don't want straight covers either. I know this sounds rather picky and probably redundant, but what I want for everyone is to hit that balance, that place where you are arranging the song and bringing out the best of it, without straying from the source too much and losing sight of what the original was about. I don't want listeners of this album to go "wha?" or "yeah nothing special"... In other words, push yourselves and your boundaries. You are all very talented people, with a lot of time ahead to make a great remix.

A NOTE ABOUT VOCALS: Vocals are discouraged as well, but exceptions can be made. This is only because I wish to treat vocals as an instrument, a very hard instrument to utilize and implement with skill. What I do not want is along the lines of vocals for the sake of being in there, but more along the lines of getting a point across. They need to be used in a way that makes the song more than a sum of its parts. For example, vocals for ambience, or lyrically to set a tone. Atmosphere is important. There are great singers in this community, and I definitely do not discourage vocals in general, but I am talking about integrating them into an album as a whole, which would be harder, spotted with non-vocal tracks. I hope that helps. I do not have anti-vocal bias, but I'm trying to be realistic in terms of whether or not they would fit, or be disruptive overall.

I am a little picky about what I like, but I am open to interpretations. Just give me the WIPs and let me hear what is going on, that is most important. I am here to help! Mostly I say this because I think I am a pretty apt person when it comes to critique, and believe me I am also the type to see the good in what you do even if I don't like something about it. In other words, I am pretty damn fair. This is speaking for me. I also want everyone to work together and share their WIPs with other project members, lets get an open forum going for crits and accountability. Blah blah blah!

I am going to start getting in touch with some of you very soon. I have more time now to do some stalking, and a lot of projects are finally wrapping up, so let's start up again. I am not making any cuts on the current roster until I get some more info, and hand-picked recruitment is my only interest at this point.

Hey guys, I made my first update, yay!

So I just want to say this: About duplicates... I kinda want them in there, but I do want to run them by you good people first. I am the type that is for any possible interpretation. Every single song is going to sound different, everyone's interpretation is going to have something worthwhile. This is how I roll.

I don't view it at all as a competition. However I want to make sure everyone is comfortable with this first. I am for Unknown World being put in there three times since it is in all three games, but since NeoS has a song already, it was really nice and polite of you to "step back" but I don't want that. Redo your song dude, after the work you did the first time, you deserve that chance, even if it may end up as a "bonus" for compromise. And djp? Can't wait to hear what you have to give either.


Moving forward. I am just excited that people want to do music! haha

I'm gonna start figuring out a forum setup for you guys to go, and also I really wanted to point out that SETTING ALL THAT TEXT UP ON THE FIRST PAGE IS ANNOYING AS HELL. Bolds, italics, text size, color, assigning names to shit, man that took forever!

While I understand your reasoning, at this point I don't want to try to constrict the creative process in a way that forces people to medley anything up. IMO a good medley comes from the creative process and is implemented through great ideas "hey, this song really goes well with this song!". As in, they flow seamlessly. While I am sure people will medley things up (they already have in some of the finished material)... Well, they is what they is. Start with a song, and where you end up, who knows... But I will consider the starter song, the song with the most source used as a remix of that particular song, no matter what else people do...

This just will make things less confusing in the long run, IMO.

And yeah, I understand the way the symphonic suites did it, they were going for (and constricting themselves to) a certain style of presentation. IMO there is no need for that in this sort of album project.

Well, I told you that if you wanted to confirm taking it, to post in this thread. If you still want it, you can do it, however I wasn't 100% sure that you wanted it or not, not because of you personally, but because of the trend of people claiming tracks in general.

People have been saying they want songs, and then they don't get back to me, so I just assumed that I wasn't gonna make you do something you are too busy/not that interested in doing. (I mean you are on a bazillion projects) and that you probably weren't that inspired for doing the song anyway.


If I am wrong, my apologies. Work on the song please, and we will see what happens. Since there is confusion, I really don't care about multiple copies of this song either. It's a REALLY popular song in the Dragon Quest series, and was reused in later titles.

That being said, I hope people who want to work on this project can pick songs other than the main overworld theme and heavenly flight from now on... lol

It's not that at this point, I don't desperately want the help, but really, for the sake of the music, what I really want the most is passion for these songs. I love Dragon Warrior, and I've always thought the music was badass, but I also just know that at this point in time, even though I am co-coordinating, I do not have the time or the energy to make a remix that represents Dragon Warrior the way I would really want it to.

So for now, due to the obvious business of everyone, just take it easy.

I'm going to take on the CRAZY task of doing the artwork for this project.

For those of you who don't know, my major in school was animation. I am not a bad artist, so don't worry!

I am thinking about doing a more traditional, fantasy (American) type artwork, nothing in the style of Akira Toriyama.

Okay guys, I started some project art today. Here is a small WIP I whipped up. I am having just a little bit of trouble with some of the characters, as images of them are kind of hard to find on the internet! (DQ III Male AND Female Classes anyone?)

What I am going for is basically a more "American" version of the DQ games. Kind of like the old box art. This is VERY rough so yeah, no critiquing really necessary at this point, however as time goes on and I show more (it will probably be shown in the project forums, don't want to give TOO much away :D) I would appreciate some input.

So basically expect a moree "Dungeons and Dragons" type of art, old skool fantasy stuff.

Anyway, what I WOULD like from people is for you to provide me with some inspirational art, your favorite fantasy art type stuff, just link it here and give me a looksie, and also if anyone can find some really good versions of obscure DQ Character and Monster Art (official or non-official) please do so, it would help a lot, because I find myself spending more time looking for references on what the characters look like than actually drawing anything :(

ok here is a small update on DQ3 soldier

Basically the three or four of them or however many characters I cram in there will be fighting a dragon of maybe a wyvern or something... Either myself or someone else will draw this. Basically the three or four of them or however many characters I cram in there will be fighting a dragon of maybe a wyvern or something... Either myself or someone else will draw this. So I'm running into some problems... I redid the studio and installed Windows 7 and stuff, but I can't open the DW Town session.. this is the first one I've run into that I couldn't open. I am thinking it has something to do with RAM since my computer says I have 1.5 available after caching and all that nonsense (2.8gb total) and when it crashes, it is up to 1.5gb so... I will be pursuing a RAM upgrade within a couple days.

My song needed more than just a lead rewrite. I rewrote the acoustic rhythm to match the key changes in the lead. So now it's just a matter of being able to open the session, so I can do stuff. o_o

I just now got the RAM upgraded to the max -- 4gb, so I'll update you soon on whether it opens... No it probably wouldn't be too hard to remake

Edit; the added RAM didn't make any difference, it still crapped out at 1.5gb.... I managed to open the session by cancelling the load of the EWQL stuff. Doing damage control now, seeing what I can remove to make it open next time.... yes ladies and gentleman, my musical process is 80% removing stuff to make my computer run better. It's very depressing.

Edit2; I think it was a bug with the halione components, I replaced them with more interesting-sounding RA sounds and now it opens without any problems. Good thing because although remaking it would have been err... fun?.... it just wouldn't have been the same song. :-)

Edit3; I'm having more problems with this project track than any other.. I am so mad, i want to kick my computer, I want to throw my lesser cat into the wall. I'm going to finish this song today or tomorrow and then I'm going to be done with it forever... Don't get me wrong I love the song, I just can't stand trying to work on it anymore. :-P My stoopit computer... tempo track problem.. ugh i have to re-record the acoustic guitars, AGAIN! For some reason recording is awkward with phantom power, all of my vocals and acoustic and recorded stuff have been slightly out of time and I don't know how to fix that. It's in Cubase. I'm working on it! Hopefully I'll get a new guitar and new rec-equip before the 20:th november, or else I'll just record a prototype version of what I've got so far, but if I do so keep in mind the recording will become much better in all ways concievable once I get my new one. The core of the music however can still be judged hopefully :).

So far I've only worked on the guitar parts, I will perhaps add percussion/pads/electronic fx mood stuff/ambient stuff later, depending on how it progresses :). Acoustic guitars will the core however.

Okay we have some great news.

AeroZ has sent me a WIP for REQUIEM from DQ2... So far it's gettin' frickin beautiful... Can't wait to hear the finished product.


In other news:

Cyrilthewolf has joined the project claiming DQ2, Unknown World! He's promised awesome "droney stoner rock"... Yeah!

ShrackAttack has promised to claim a track from DQ2 w/ some awesome vibraphone work, so here's hoping to hearing from him soon with his pick.

p.s. NeoS... Ah yes I still have that... I was thinking to move it to bonus as well to give maybe some more room to anyone who might want to claim it under the track guidelines... But the project is moving extremely slow as of now so I wouldn't worry too much... It's gonna come down to a decision on the flow of the album after all.

Hey everyone, Summer is here again, and that means I have extra time to start getting on people's asses about their songs.

If you are on this project, expect a pm from me very soon. I want to know what anyone's status is. There are certain people I have already been in touch with and I know where they stand, so those do not have to worry. Like I have said in the project title, a lot of people I know are solid and good for their songs. But I am counting on you. Let's get the ball rolling again and see what happens.

I'd also like to add that if you do wish to join this project, either PM me here or get on #ocremix in IRC and hit me up, as I usually idle there. All I need is either a good song or two of your work to know where you stand musically, or a WIP that I can critique, and you're solid. I encourage anyone joining this project to give me a WIP asap as to earn my trust that you are truly interested in working.

And if anyone is worried about this project, don't worry, we are not going anywhere, we are just taking forever, and that's okay.

Okay so, I have had four people try out for songs within the past week. They are all going to get me WIPS, hopefully in a timely manner so I can put their names down. That is at least something right there.

Anyway I promise to be more organized/involved now that I have some spare time. And also some more artwork should be showing its pretty face before September.

I'd like to add that I am looking for artists who can do good coloring/line work. I am doing all the illustrations myself, and it will take time but I am excited about it, but a little help in those two areas would be greatly appreciated.

I was wondering if there is still need of tracks to be claimed? I'm going to talk with my friends and see if they're game to play an arrangement of #16 from DW1, Ending Theme. I am very, very new to this scene, so I was wondering what exactly you need from me before I can claim the song? As a background, I'm playing with a group right now that is drums, bass, keyboard, and saxophone, though we are far from jazz, and much closer to groove music.
