This has to rank as one of my favorites from djp. As a fan of the source material, I personally loved the arrangement. The highlight for me was the very cool sax work and the piano, something which djp has consistently been showing is his forte. Great mix.

Happy 5th OCR!

Great stuff. I can't pick the piece though. I recognise the tune.

That beat is so phat, and that piano is good too. I like it.

Very nice!

I especially like the combination of groove, piano and guitar. This will surely get on my favorites-list.

OH GOD NO! THANKS ALOT DJP. The beginning of this song brought forth a torrent of all the HORRIBLE 80's styles and cliches, primarily the Robot. :P Great stuff, very nostalgic, very good capture of the 80's feel. I really enjoyed the section at 2:10. Very interesting. The sheer variety of sounds used makes the entire piece something different with each passing second. A very strange and interesting take on the veldt theme.

P.S. Great interview and congrats on 5 years DJP.

As with GrayLighting, I love the sax and the piano. I gotta say that my favorite areas are 0:55, 1:36, and 2:03.

Gray and I were talking about how we missed the 80s after djp mentioned the McDonald's McDLT (http://www.retrojunk.com/media/114) in his writeup on Chekan Winter (http://www.ocremix.org/detailmix.php?mixid=OCR01307). All the better to have something like this mix to harken back to the days when Reagan was president and coke was abundant. The base of the mix is so 80s, it's great. Then again, as a judge, I'm groove-biased...

I've always loved the Veldt theme. This does it alot of good.. Especially that little bit at 00:55. That's just major ear-candy. :)

It's not exactly -the- mix of the Veldt I've been hoping for.. But it's more than enough to tide me over until someone does it.

On a little side note-thingy here.. The name "Sveldt", makes me think of Group-X.

I'm loving it. This is truly what djping is all about.

I can just see a room full of people head bobbing together in tune with the music.

What's great about DJP's mixes is that, while there are remixers out there who have done better pieces, DJP is consistently good. I can't name a single mix of his that I haven't listened to and downloaded.

That said, thank you, DJP, for finally giving us a remix of this theme. The veldt was indeed a catchy tune, which is good based on the number of times you have to go there. Do I catch pieces of Strago's tune in here as well?

I would say that the begining was a bit abrupt and the feel threw me off at first. I was kinda hoping for the awesome drum score that went with the original. However, the piano and sax solidifies things into a very enjoyable whole and, while the piano and sax are somber, and the drum track isn't present, the piece retains its upbeat and mysterious quality. I especially congratulate you on your switch to what I believe is Strago's theme near the end. This was so brilliantly done that I didn't even catch it at first. All in all, the essence of the piece ends up being transformed into a sound more reminiscent of Chrono Trigger than FF. Which works amazingly well.

Thanks for 5 wonderful years of music. I'm a very VERY nostalgic man, and OCR has really kept me young at heart.

I haven't always agreed with the way you run things, David, but it doesn't change the fact that you know what you're doing.

So, Pretz, here's to another 5 years of excellent music, noob-bashing, judge-bashing, thread-breaking, bagel-wanging, Vortex-pic-whoring, catgirls, sporks and "favorites" thread-making. Cheers!

Excellent remix, by the way.

Hehe, DJ Pretzel....awesome.

Go figure that this would turn into a thank you thread. Appropriate, definitely. Well, I'll say my thanks as well because it's well earned. Thanks DJP for giving us remixers the opportunity to get together and form what I have come to consider my music haven on the net. I've been with you for three years now, downloading, listening, dropping my jaw time after time and again, and coming back. Why? Because simply: You're remixes and the remixes of everyone who's ever posted at OCR are the best things to happen to the gaming music world. Again, here is my personal thanks to you, DJ Pretzel, for OverClocked.

All that jibberish aside though (=P), this remix is awesome. Definitely a different take on an already-catchy-but-often-overlooked song from FFVI. I really like the beat in the beginning that you have there. It's funky, but it's the good kind of funk. The kind that just makes you tap your feet and bob your head whether you want to or not. The flute/recorder thingy for the melody is reminiscient to your Sonic remix which is really, really interesting. And the piano gives it a nice, gentler kind of kick. When you come in with the guitar, it's just icing on the cake.

In my overall opinion, not your best mix, but definitely one of the top mixes. If we're not comparing to your history at all, and looking strictly at this piece, then only good things can be said. Great job DJP. Here's to another five years, and then some, of OCR.

Thank you so much, David, for all the work and everything you've put into OCR over the last five years. Although I'm probably not that important around here, I've noetheless come to consider OCR my home-away-from-home of sorts. It's an amazing site with an equally amazing (though quarky) community, and I'm proud to call myself a part of it.

As for the mix, I absolutly LOVE the overall groove, and the sax/gutiar gave me chills -- litterally. I found the piano section at 1'38 interesting...perhaps somewhat out-of-place given the overall feel of this remix. However, at 2'45 the piano comes back and flows perfectly. The smooth sax ending is the perfect ending to a near-perfect piece...one of your best.

Here's to five more -- and then some. :)

Wow! "Funky/Junky", djpretzel! :nicework:

That is typical of djpretzel. The instruments! Very amused! Your first remix in 2005 come cool. Good beats, and of course, nice work!

Really nice mix! This one was probably my favorite out of the mini-FF6 flood. The first piano solo in the piece blew me away. I also really liked the variation of instruments and synthetic sounds, they all come together and form an amazing mix. Great job!

Well, this song caught my attention and was pretty unique for the first minute or so. But then it didn't do much else. Pretty much a repetitive beat over and over with very little variation. Still, it has the classic Dj Pretzel feel to it. I could tell this was a djp song from a mile away. Decent mix, mediocre for a remixer of such high caliber though.

Not bad. I prefer "Pachebel's Ganon," but then I was bottled, not aged, in the 80's. I especially like the sax. Nice electro stuff, djp.

I was introduced to OCR just six months ago, but it has become my favorite web site. You've built something great here. Quite amazing music, intelligent discussion, and the truest internet community I've ever seen. Many sites call themselves "communities," but OCR is the only one I've visited that has a clear communal identity. Visiting OCR makes me feel like I'm part of something more than anything on the internet.

So congratulations on five years, djpretzel, and thank you for your work. Simply put, OCR is flippin' sweet.

Mr. Pretzel I have a little story for you on your 5TH
Anniversary with the OCR. I bet you didn't know this but
this is probably my 7th or maybe 8th post here ever! And
again something else you probably you didn't know about
me is that this was my first Forum site that I had ever
joined waayyy back when I think this site was at the end
of it's first incarnation. I absolutely love this site.

It would just so happen that I was randomly brought here
by a search for something techno-y when I was a rabbid
MP3 downloader. It was a remix by yourself actually that
was what hooked me. Sheesh, I've d/led so many songs here
I don't even know which one it was now! Usually when I
see that you've put out a new remix, I'm quick to d/l it
and this one AGAIN, amazes me! I love it! And what's
just totally the greatest is not only the remix fun to
listen to, it has meaning because of the memories it
brings back to me as well. Can't say that there are a
lot of other things in my little world that do that.

I guess this is just my 'thankyou' for introducing me
to a world I never knew existed back in the 90's! Long
live OCR baby! And incase you were wondering about my
member status---yeah, it's new (again) but only because
I just recently had the urge to start posting here again.

Ok, I rarely comment on ANYTHING since I haven't bothered attempting to mix anything since my first attempt (damn school, I might be half way decent by now if I'd stuck with it). Anyhow, I just started laughing when I heard this open. This is awesome. The piano and strings bit make for a nice contrast to the quasi funk/disco thing it's got going on. Awesome.

What can I say? It's simply groovin'.

The Piano was an interesting twist. The entire mix seemed peculiar to me.

But I like it! Well done DJP. One of, if not your best in my opinion.

Hee heehee!!!

some very fun stuff in this one.

This is the type of song that watches all the other songs walk about in their menial everyday... then sashays through life and flips a coin while its at it.

This song starts aggressive, stays agressive, while maintaining a very very smooth and laid back feel! its a paradox of musical sound.

Although never having heard the original... given the nsf requirement I have to say that this is some super calibur material.

Excellent work DJP... you have made this humble mixer bounce his head.

Fun! I like the Thamasa part at the end; you almost don't see it coming until it's already underway. And do I detect FF1's "Temple of Fiends" stashed away in there somewhere?

I can't say much of what many others haven't, but I WILL say that this is pretty damned good! I remember the theme very well, it's interpretation is liberal yet respectful, and since I'm also a child of the 80's, hearing any reference to Trio is elation.

Heh heh, "Sunday you need love, monday be alone..."

Nice work, David, and a wonderful, eloquent write up. Cheers!

At the start I can barely hear any FF. Maybe it's just me. Near the middle a little FF nostalgia comes in mixed with DJP's own touch on the track. Great track which of course is expected for the founder of our OCR.

Pretty sure right off the bat you can hear the "Wild West" melody playing..

great remix, of course :D

Ok. This is my first post here. So you guys take it easy about my english. Letīs directly to the core of the thing.

The Bad Side
I didnīt like the beating so much. To me, if the first part of the music (00:00 to 00:50) was cutted, the mix would be better. And, of course, the same goes to the rest of music where the same is found. But, as our friend drk-mega said here, maybe it's just a question of pesonal taste.

The Good Side
To me, second part shows a lot of musical sensibility, mainly the flutes, keyboards, strings (seems to be played with a real intrument) and the piano. In a few words: A good mix, but far away from the best that DJP have done and will do.

Ah wow! Groovy! Definatly groovy! Outstanding solos giving the song a sort of funky, laid-back feel. I dig those piano solos! And then jumping back into the funky feel. I can't wait to see what djp's working on next

I hadn't really fully appreciated this song until... just now. It is full of fun, I'm lovin it. djp is a mighty good man. And a mighty man. This song is a mighty good song made by said mighty man of goodlyness. Grooooooovy baby.

This remix...it really makes me think of Lando, and that really weird looking co-pilot guy from RoTJ flying around space, and "party planets" with half-naked women.
They drop out of hyperspace as the mix begins, and warp back into it as it ends.

Oh, yeah. I've listened to it maybe 15 times since this morning. It rocks. : ]

I love the funkiness at the beginning and how DJP worked in the melody. Does anyone else hear this beat in the Gorillaz's new single?

Bummerdude
09-20-2005, 08:21 AM
This isnīt a normal remix. Itīs not beautiful, not
really a jamming one, clearly not serious. Instead, itīs funny. My sister and I began to laugh at the beginning, the melody is just jumping around with a wide selection of instruments. But at some points it gets more beautiful and serious, like at 0:55, when it goes over to a more blues type mood with a saxophone-sounding melody. I can clearly say that this song is stuffed with everything, thanks to djpretzel.

JimSelve
03-19-2006, 11:29 AM
I like this piece, because the main bass melody reminds me somehow of the one in Pink Floyd's "Sorrow". =]
Oh and the sax is great.

I think this is one of the only songs ever that makes me want to get up and dance.
For this purpose I have created a DDR-length version of this song!
http://www.escaprism.org/audity/Final_Fantasy_6_The_Sveldt_OC_ReMix_(DDR_Edit).mp3

The main thing about the song that causes this is all that silence in between each 8th note. I think they call that sticatto...

one of mr. pretzel's best works!
can't deny the fact that im sooo biased when it comes to remixes from this game...

somehow i like FF6 ReMixes better than FF7 ReMixes, even if FF7 has a better soundtrack (maybe i just love the original TOO much to appreciate reworked material) 8O

anyway.. great interpretation of a catchy tune
makes me wanna dance :-o

Not at all the way I'd expect this source to be remixed. Production is very clean throughout (pretty typical DJP). Some of the instrument choices are a little quirky (also typical DJP ;), but on the whole, catchy stuff. Really liking the soprano sax that enters in around the minute mark. Very pretty sound and, assuming it's sequenced, it's very capably done.

One part I didn't like was how all of the energy was lost with the breakdowns - I think the song in general could've been more effective if he breakdowns were handled with either more energy or building expectations. Anyway, really like the ghostbusters 80's synth feel at 2:32 - some of the elements here really could pass for an 80's track, especially if the synths were more pronounced and embellished IMO. I'm not always a fan of DJP's stuff, but this is catchy and a keeper.

OA
04-26-2010, 10:15 PM
Wow, a very different sound than i was expecting from both the source and from DJP- it's kindof funky, kind of serene, and i'm not sure it's the strongest way to handle the theme; it's very much the opposite way i'd take the theme.. but for some reason, I can't help but loop this one. There are a lot of clever details, and the arrangement is very unique to the theme. Samples are good, and well balanced, and otherwise quality.

...

I just looked down and noticed Justin basically wrote the exact same review. :P I swear we are not the same person. If you don't like this one at first, give it a few more listens, it really grows on you, and I recommend it.

This mix really grew on me. Definitely a worthwhile listen. That opening really hooks you in. Great thing to listen to on the road.

Also, at 2:52...Ice Cap anyone? :P
