Good luck to all remixers! Do your very best!

Also, to the remixers who claim Steiner's Theme and Immoral Melody: do it right, and I'll love you forever.

Hot damn, one awesome surprise after another. As much as I'd want to contribute I may have to much on my plate. Hopefully we'll also see FF8 somewhere down the road. It is too bad however we're not prioritizing on finishing some of the other projects first (aka SD3).

Hot damn, one awesome surprise after another. As much as I'd want to contribute I may have to much on my plate. Hopefully we'll also see FF8 somewhere down the road. It is too bad however we're not prioritizing on finishing some of the other projects first (aka SD3).

This is something I've thought as well too - I'd like to see more people try to dedicate their efforts towards some existing projects, as the increase in projects is more prone to creating burnout in some people, as well as endangering most projects into collapse due to taking people and throwing priorities out of sync. (Just a side note about the MMX series one - I had that started several months ago, and asked probably over 50 people in getting it started, mostly people not involved with many other projects & even outside the normal OCR community proper)

For the record, I do want to help existing projects with whatever I can and do try in some ways most don't see, and probably will try to spend more time doing so once I get more on top of my existing ones in the next few days.

But one thing I wanted to comment on here and I think it's worth addressing since I've heard a lot of displeasure with this announcement while at MAGFest - Oinkness as the one heading such a massive project. There's a bunch of people I've heard express a lot of skepticism about it being done right, and some even outright refusing to join it run by just him. Perhaps if something like this is to continue with the bar desired from something like this, it would be good to have a co-director who can help ensure things are run at a high level. I'm not nominating myself mind you, although I did express a desire to run an FF9 project about a half a year ago while I was playing the game, but I think it's a point worth addressing after known events that have happened to earn people's distrust.

It was me who requested their participation. My only regret is that I couldn't snag more of them.

There's always the more rhythmic 'Protecting my Devotion', Rose of May's counterpart, PriZm.

Also, how do you plan on managing all the 'Melodies of Life' variations in the soundtrack? Most are pretty similar, except for musical style and context.

Nice to see the next FF project getting off the ground. FF9 was an ambitious soundtrack (especially if you count Plus) so that makes this an ambitious project, especially given the timing of so many projects already going on. It's a safe bet that we'll be waiting a while for this one, but FF9's soundtrack is definitely ready for the OCR-treatment.

I can't wait to see what people come up with, I always like to mention a few tracks I'm psyched for, and in this case I am going to say "Awakened Forest", "The Chosen Summoner", and "Esto Gaza" (man Esto Gaza could be so smooth, someone do it justice please!).

Good point about the Melodies of Life themes, like 5 songs on the OST are basically that same melody, including the world map. That should make for some good genre-jumping potential though.

May your creative juices flow quickly!

cmonnnnn, didn't you see how long it took for the ffiv project to finally come into fruition? development vs release are two different things, and with a release i can agree that another ff album so shortly right after the last would be on the ricockulous side. however, it's fair game otherwise

While I agree there are too many projects, there's NEVER going to be a time when there aren't enough. I think it's usually safe with an FF project though, people love those soundtracks disproportionately, myself included.

Agree with you, sir! It's not like this is coming out next week. When I started it, I estimated that it would take about 2 years. It could take more, nobody really knows yet, but the response seems to be really good. The dedication of the reMixers involved who are claiming multiple tracks, as well as the community who wants to hear this music, will ensure that it doesn't end up in a 5-year purgatory. :)

Like I said, it's my opinion. None of you have to agree. I never said I was aganist this or anything else that's going on, but I believe eventually OCR should put a limit of how many projects are going on per year. Too many projects exhausts any artist. I don't care how long it takes to finish a project, that wasn't my point.

It also begins to take away from the listener perspective. It's a tough balance between releasing music too frequently and then not frequently enough. If more projects are started, and even more seen through to completion, the amount of time in between projects would dictate that sooner or later there will be a queue of finished projects waiting to be released. No project wants to give up their share of the spotlight, after all they worked hard on it, so there does need to be some space in between. Also, too many projects released to frequently can overwhelm potential listeners. Consider the time it takes for people to listen to music, and then again at how much is released, and you see that people have to pick and choose as there's only so much time available.

I'm not saying don't start a project, I'm just saying there are many things to consider. You seem to be gathering quite a few people already and a couple staffers, so I wish you luck and hope your project finishes one day.

There's 16 projects on the front page, many of which are still looking for remixers. As good remixers are in relatively short supply it's natural to worry about the rate of project "introduction" to the site.

Exactly! Yeah, listeners are also effected. It's important for every project on this site to have the spotlight because they did work hard on it. I know a lot of people want to climb up the OCR ladder to be known and respected. I totally understand that and more power to all of you. To me, I could careless about popularity. I'm doing Wild ARMs because the fans requested it and the game/music is effing awesome. I tested the waters in the beginning to see how many would join and I believe I proved (with only 4 tracks left to claim out of 79 currently) that the project could get done. I know it's not like a "Final Fantasy" but it's still inspiring so that's why I took upon the job. I knew no one would do it anytime, let alone ever (possibly anyway). So don't judge me or my project because of my opinion. It's completely different.

If we had a balance amount of projects per year, you could have remixers that usually say no because they're on too many already and acquire better quality music because they don't feel rushed or pressured. It shouldn't feel like a job.

So I am not against this project in any way. I REALLY want it to succeed like all the other projects going on currently. I'm obviously an FF whore and FFIX has an amazing soundtrack. I've been working on 2 songs for that game as well for a while. Don't believe I'm a close-minded person because it's the opposite.

We used to have an approval process. I've been thinking we need to bring it back.

I think it should be considered to balance out projects and have timely mannered release dates to keep OCR interesting and highlight the music and remixers. I'm not trying to attack people. Just trying to bring a point up. Projects also shouldn't have release dates unless all tracks are done, in my opinion too.

Just a little announcement regarding track claiming:

People have been claiming silly amounts of tracks which is a bit gay because there's no real promise that its all going to be done or that you're not just saying "oh i'll take these and maybe do them a year later". I'm sure that's not the case for everyone but it has happened the past on projects.

In the interest of fairness, and this is retro-active, you have to make a solid start on one mix to claim another. I've dropped my extra mixes too, this is for everyone. Solid start should be, lets say, a minute of solid (and i mean solid) start on your first track. I think its the only way to be fair to everyone and I hope you (albeit begrudgingly) agree.

Sorry, bit lame I know but had to be fair to everyone.

EDIT: lol, anso already has an awesome wip, he gets two tracks :D

Brandon Strader
01-08-2010, 11:16 PM
I can't speak for every remixer, but I tried my best to produce WIPs for a wide array of projects. If people are interested in a project, they will probably help it. You can't really "force" people to help a project they're not necessarily interested in. Having "too many projects" is just a way to give people more variety, and a chance to work on something that they love. If they end up loving 5+ projects, then that's fine.

Granted, my status is probably a lot different than most remixers. I can put hours and hours into remixing every day, and I usually finish something I'm focusing on within a day or two. But I still think variety is a great thing, even if people are very busy. If they're not making progress in a project, they can step down, and someone else who is interested can take their place.

I could go on, about how people should be more accepting of new musicians coming to OCR, and things such as that, but I know nobody wants to hear it. Still, there's hundreds... thousands... of bands and musicians out there that might want to take a crack at a song or two. Just because they're not posted here, or don't have a rep, doesn't mean they shouldn't be able to audition for any project they want.

As for removing claims for multiple-track people... Sorry about that. Seemed like a good way to proceed with things, and it seems to have raised the productivity of people who are devoted to the music. This is also a call to anyone who hasn't claimed yet, steal the track you want now before it's too late. ;)

@Josh Whelchel: You claimed something else before Immoral Melody, and I knew your main interest was in your initial selection. I hope I didn't cross any lines by personally choosing which track you have claimed. If you wish to change your selection, you are more than welcome to do so.

Thanks. ^_^

Yeah... claims are going faster than japanese hotcakes, and the people who had to do auditions are scrambling to get WIPs in just to ensure that they keep their claims. In the case of LuIza, I wanted to double-check with Fishy first so there was an extra night's delay on me re-adding her claims. I am sorry for the inconvenience.

Well, I think we're taking the votl approach; for claiming we'll list it as the *main* source tune used, whatever you think that will end up being - but credit it as all of them later. That coo?

I would like to get some opinions from remixers who are attached, as well as fellow directors and co-directors as to what initial deadline you would find most reasonable for everyone involved right now. I'd like it to be a substantial WIP deadline if possible. That means WIPs that are around half-completed and fairly polished. Let me know what you think. :)

Hello

I'm very sorry to I announce that I'm stepping down as the director of the FF9 project. When I started this project, I thought it would be something that brought everybody together to create one of the best album projects that this site has ever seen, but apparently some people had problems with the fact that I was running the project.

For the record, I think I do have the ability to direct a project like this but the lack of support from the whole community of remixers would make this difficult and possibly compromise the quality of the music. I've decided to continue with smaller projects for the time being which I hope people will join and support. For now I have chosen Fishy - who originally signed on as a third director - to continue as director. He has given his full support and assured me that he would give great care to this project.

I started this project because I wanted to make the greatest Final Fantasy 9 album imaginable. I will continue to support the project and I hope you all will do the same!

Best regards,

Brandon

Is that normal?

FF7, FF4, Radical Dreamers, Tales, Xenogears, Pokemon, DKC2.

These are most of the projects I've been on so far, at no point was I told to consider any specific style or theme so yeah, its perfectly normal. I will admit that the focus with newer projects is a bit more towards themed projects, and I think that's a good thing for the record. Oink didn't specify anything when he started it, and even if I disagreed it's too late to go 180 on that. Eh, I don't want to stop people doing what they do best.

Imo themed projects are mostly only possible small scale before the quality starts to suffer from lack of genre specialists (unless its something like baddudes with a more fun theme).

I couldn't agree more on the fact that projects with huge scale (3 discs or so) and genre constraint aren't the easiest to complete.
No matter how many willing and able musicians are around, you need to have both a strong direction and truly dedicated people to execute the concept flawlessly.

But yeah, it seems that most recent projects have some kind of genre-specific focus. So much that in fact, the freedom allowed in this one sounded kinda fishy.

The only rule I set when I started this project was that I didn't want any Chocobo Raps, or any kind of raps. If vocals were attempted, they'd have to be very well done, tasteful, and preferably T-rated (like the game).

I can't wait to hear this album - not only is it my favorite final fantasy, but I just looked again at the tracklist for who has what song and some of my favorites are taken by some of my favorite remixers :D

I'm no remixer (in fact I fail miserbly when it comes to making music, I've tried), so I can't help in that department, but I am a graphic/web designer, so if you need any help there, let me know and I'll see what I can do. I was going to try to help out with album art for the latest sonic project but due to time constraints from school and work, I wasn't able to. However I don't have that problem this semester so like I said, let me know.

This might just be nitpicking, but the first post states that the FFIX soundtrack is said to be Uematsu's favorite in the series, but I have always heard that it was the FFVIII soundtrack he liked the most. This was also said during one of the Distant Worlds concerts, which he was attending. This was probably the reason why FFVIII was the most represented game at that concert.
However, I do always hear/read that FFIX is Hironobu Sakaguchi's favorite game of the series.

[/nitpick]

Fishy

9 is definitely his favourite - he's said it in multiple interviews.

You only need to look at the size of the damn thing to tell that he was enjoying himself a lot. There's a whole disc more then any other FF ost.

StarZander
03-03-2010, 09:55 AM
Yeah, that's true. I guess both him and Sakaguchi gave it their all with this game. I didn't really like this game, compared to the others in the series, but the music was stellar at least, so this project has a really good foundation, and with the talents of OCR in the mix, it should really end up being just as amazing. Wish I could help. :)

Despite that, I still believe all three systems are equally as good. I can't decide which track I'm most excited for, but tentatively I'll say Dali because it was used in a custom Zelda Classic "The Hidden Duality", so I recognize it best. Other than that, I know next to nothing about FFIX, because neither my "oniisan" nor I ever owned it.

I want to say it's just called "Gargant Roo" or "Fossil Roo" or "Something Roo," but I don't have the track list in front of me. Comes between "Garnet's Theme" (after "Immoral Melody") but before the "Cleyra" tracks.

EDIT: You're referring to this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BOSOeS_BtNA), right?

Don't get me wrong, its a cheeky little theme that I quite like; I just found it hard to imagine a remix of it. If somethings not on the list, you can still do it, I just think there were better songs.

Melbu Frahma

I dunno. I kinda saw a bLiNd-esque dance mix coming off of Gargant Roo. But I understood perfectly why you removed it, too; it's a great, fun little theme, but it's not crucial to the game. (Although as long as I usually spent in that damn place, lol...)

Actually, the one I was sad to see you weren't recommending was Gulug Volcano. I absolutely loved that one. But then again, McVaffe did a pretty good remix of that in... 2000? '01? Something like that. (At least I swear he did, because it's attributed to 'Final Fantasy' if I remember right, but it definitely sounded like Mount Gulug's theme from 9...)

Er... enough rambling.

Mount Gulag is from FF1, they brought it back for nostalgia.

Same with Mog's Theme from FF6 and the band playing Rufus's theme from FF7. They're all little covers of other games, so I omitted them. This pained me to do so as I love Mog's theme.

Well, I'm impatient, and paranoid that if that person doesn't take that track, then no one will and my favorite track will go unmixed. I really don't want that to happen. But, I'll just have to be patient, I suppose, and hope that one person does, in fact, claim that track.

I hope someone does Zidane's Theme.

It's kinda sad that in the end, there are people interested in this project, but who lack the remixing skills, and then there are people who have the skills, but aren't interested. I'm in the former category, but even though I'm unable to do that one theme, I still wish that I could hear someone else's take on it.

Oh well, if it can happen then it can't happen. =/

Although, I have to admit, Zidane's Theme is actually the least memorable main character's theme of a Final Fantasy game that I can think of, at least to me. But you're probably right, it probably needs to be done. But of course, that'll depend upon the available manpower, interest, and skills available.

Honestly, I'm just grateful that there are as many talented and interested remixers giving love to this soundtrack, and that Fishy's stepping up and running the project; it's something I've been hoping to see happen ever since I first visited OCRemix in '08, and didn't really think WOULD happen, so the fact that the project exists and is in progress is enough for me.

Respectfully, I disagree. I happen to like its chord progression. It's a matter of taste I suppose. My favorite part of the theme starts around the 2-minute mark, that's probably the section I like the most. If I made the remix, it would have an acoustic guitar struming bouncy chords there, with a bouncing electric bass underneath. (Hint hint, suggestions to potential mixer. =D )

And to Melbu: I personally found his theme most memorable, perhaps because I listened to it the most when I got the sound track like, 10 years ago. If I had to guess, I suppose most people think Vivi's Theme is the most memorable. That's my second favorite.

Mmm, see, I suppose what's happened with me was that I spent such a small amount of time in the scenes in the game that had Zidane's Theme that it's hard for me to place it as such when I hear it out of context. Like, if I was just sitting on a bus and I hear Terra play, or even Tidus' Theme, I could snap my fingers and place it instantly. But Zidane's Theme... for some reason, even though I can always place it as FF9, and kinda think of the scene in which I hear it played, I couldn't attribute it as being Zidane's.

I dunno. I suppose part of my problem, too, is that in the back of my mind I've always thought of "You're Not Alone!" as being a truer theme for Zidane than the happy, boisterous one the soundtrack attributes to him, just because it seems to fit his story and personality so much better to me.

Ah, that makes sense. For me, I'd say that, back in the day, I spent almost as much time listening to the sound track CDs as I did actually playing the game. That probably helps to make a big difference in perception.

...in the back of my mind I've always thought of "You're Not Alone!" as being a truer theme for Zidane than the happy,
Yes, going on a song vs song basis, I also like "You are not alone" a lot (one of my favorite tracks in the game), but going on a theme vs theme basis, the one assigned to zidane is my favorite. I hope that's clear.

Yeah... on one hand, it's a really big soundtrack and you don't need remixes of all 20 versions of Melodies of Life that are in the game. On the other hand there are still some strong unclaimed tracks... Jesters of the Moon, Cid's Theme, and Eiko's theme all deserve to be covered.

I like the idea of Gaia and Terra as names for discs but it will probably end up being 3 so that won't work.

Mirby
04-24-2010, 12:24 AM
Gaia, Terra, Memoria. Since Memoria is technically a part of neither! ^_^ Memoria is just the gateway to the crystal world, basically, if memory serves. And Terra is separate from Gaia; the only link is the gateway that is the Shimmering Isle. So I think they'll work as disc names, especially considering how all three are presented in game. Obviously you start off on Gaia, you start to learn more about Terra, which you visit at the end of Disc 3, and then the final dungeon is the colossus that is Memoria on Disc 4.

As for the overall name... THE TRACKS THAT REALLY WOULD'VE DRIVEN UEMATSU MAD HAD HE MADE THESE VERSIONS!

I'm out of ideas right now...

I would rather that the people who put in the work making the music get the chance to name their own hard work. Plus it's hard enough getting the project to agree on some matters, yet alone the whole community. The last thing you need is 100 opinions on every name idea.
