HEROES VS. VILLAINS

Talked to djpretzel and Liontamer at MAGFest -- It's a go. I want a clean fight. No orchestral foo foos, no slow jams. This is balls to the wall. The Good Guys versus the Bad Guys. And we're the Guys to do it.

Let's do TWO DISCS ONLY (80 mins per disc). Let's break it down like:

BEFORE WE START CLAIMING TRACKS: We all need to come up with potential good guys and matching bad guys. There can be multiple themes from which to pull as in these examples:

LINK: Hyrule Theme (Zelda III version, Zelda IV version)
GANON: Battle with Ganon (Zelda III), last battle fights from Ocarina, last dungeon from first game, etc.)
MEGA MAN: almost any MM Title Screen
etc...

It's going to help if everyone uses MIDI in some facet as we're going to be big on quality control on this one. We don't want to leave anyone behind, but with only two discs, there will be cuts, re-writes, and maybe even a reboot of the series (e.g. tag "Begins" on the end of it). QA is a must with the Bad Dudes and OverClocked ReMix's names on the cover (we're hoping to press up some discs).

So let's get to it. If you've wanted to be a Bad Dude, now's the time to show your stuff. If you just make foo foo orchestra shits but want to get on, team up with a rockin' dude and do it up all orchestra rock or whatever. If you're all Dale North Christmas Morning-like, GTFOoH. Let's get to work. I want this out at next MAGFest. All questions will be answered when I'm done with your mother.

1.) By popular demand, the Bad Dudes (http://www.baddudesmusic.com) will do the Villains disc.

2.) Bad Dudes will pick out their tracks, leaving that corresponding Hero available to an OCR regular.

3.) OCR regular will respond, especially if "called out" by a Bad Dude.

4.) In the event no OCR regular picks a Hero to match a Bad Dude, suggestions will be taken from that Bad Dude, and/or an OCR regular "challenging" a Bad Dude to a series of his/her choice.

Wow, as a huge fan of both Bad Dudes and OCR this is one hell of an awesome project theme.

Could maybe take the Mega Man part a step further and do an X (or Zero) vs Sigma type thing, then again there may not be room on a shortish album like this. At the risk of opening a huge can of worms there are obviously a ton of FF heroes and villains that could be chosen, and perhaps Chrono/Lavos.

I'd like to point out in every case that you pick a hero and a villain with a definable theme. Some of the above listed are bad guys without a real specific theme that matches them. Like Kid Icarus - the Eggplant Wizard doesn't really have a main theme. There's the dungeon theme, but he's not the boss of the dungeon, just one of the bad guys. To be correct it'd need to be Kid Icarus vs Medusa, the last boss... but I also know she's not the first thing you associate with the game, so it might not work so well.

Just bear it in mind. On my end, I'd like the suggest the following, both with themes that to my knowledge have little or no coverage:

Honestly, why NOT have OCR do the entire heroes side while the Bad Dudes do the villains? Not for the purpose of segregating the community, but for the sheer thematic epic potential of it.

There would be friendly rivalry between mirror tracks obviously, with one guy trying to out-do the other, but more importantly I'm curious to see how the cohesive wholes will compare with each other. I'm part of the contingent who believes OCR's recent albums just simply don't have the same cohesion that the Bad Dudes' projects have. It would be thrilling to juxtapose the different philosophies the two sides have in creating compilations. I've read so much discussion between different parts of the community about what VG remixing is "supposed" to be, and here is a chance to channel those beliefs into a creative effort. What we'll get, I hope, is not a polarization of remixing philosophies, but an understanding that all these different styles enhance rather than deter each other.

Imagine the potential matchups: Taucer vs zyko, djpretzel vs Mustin, zircon vs Mazedude. It's enough to give any fan of the community wet dreams.

Some suggestions:

First, I highly support OCR = Good Guys and Bad Dudes = Villains. I mean shit, they're BAD Dudes, right? Seems like a perfect fit there.

Second, I think when it comes down to games, it might be best to put the more recognizable stuff as top priority. I mean, it'd be awesome to have some nice obscure stuff, but speaking on a personal level, it's hard to care about songs that aren't as recognizable as opposed to songs you can indentify with.

Can't wait to see the results here.

it's a good idea and i'd like to see it happen, but it might be difficult if a baddude wanted to do a hero track and didn't have any ideas for a villain track. forcing or constraining tracks on people may not result in the best outcome, but i suppose there's already a decent constraint with the hero/villain pairs

Then again, I think variety can't be a BAD thing. There'll be mixes of songs that HAVE been mixed a billion times before (Chrono Trigger anyone?), but I think throwing in a few tracks here and there that no one recognizes much might not only be enjoyable but, in the best scenario, might actually get people interested in overlooked games with great music (kinda like that Langrisser mix recently posted).

Some Masafumi (sp) Takada stuff would be cool, too.

Perhaps the best way to handle this is to enforce a strict ratio - at least one undermixed game for every overmixed game. Exactly what is "overmixed" and "undermixed" will probably generate some controversy, although "number of remixes already in existence" is an easy threshold.

Actually, this could be something to market about the project: the battles no one hears about, finally brought to attention alongside the likes of Mario and Sephiroth in this epic album showdown. There aren't many projects which aren't focused on a specific (and pretty much always popular) game, so when something like this comes along I always want to hear (and eventually contribute) tracks from games which have never/rarely seen prominence.

Way-back suggestion: Altered Beast - wiki tells me the antagonists are "Centurion" and "Demon God Neff".
I also suggest Fatal Fury - either 1 with Terry and Geese or 2 with Terry and Krauser, although Krauser uses a classical piece from Mozart, so I dunno about that.

Naturally, I also want in, but I'm still too much into other stuff to guarantee to commit. However, if a little hip-hop is allowed here, I think a rap battle would be completely appropriate (I can hear the "ohgodnoes" already), and I can at least give you verses.

Also I dunno if Tetris Attack qualifies...Yoshi's theme is from Yoshi's Island, and Bowser's theme is actually Thanatos' theme from Panel de Pon. Lip vs. Thanatos would be pretty cool though (Lip's theme is the demo/training music in Tetris Attack).

Personally I wanna see Geno vs. Smithy so we can finally hear Smithy done the RIGHT way -- spaghetti western style.

As of right now, we're not sure. Still working out a lot of the fine details! When you list your battle suggestions, I recommend choosing characters with distinct/easily identifiable themes. That's probably the easiest way to go about it.

While I'm uber encouraged that we've got a Theme of Adol and a Theme of Dark Fact, may I recommend Theme of Darm (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4wsrUR_7ZMQ) seeing as he was the legitimate major villain in Ys Book I and II. His theme's also a little more...lengthy, without trying to sound too judgemental there.

Dark Fact still has a kickass theme though, don't get me wrong. Some of the best synth rock on the Turbo GFX. But let's face it, you don't fuck with a demon who can "crush and consume you".
