Well, as usually, I drifted out of noticing to the solo piano, but it brought me right back to attention, unfortuantely a bit close to the end around 2:53. It's rather slow and deliberate listenning before-hand, which in of itself, even though it had lost my attention, is somewhat soothing, but at 1:20, it somewhat loses that quality, yet overall it is not destroyed. Decent, but I simply usually look for more energy myself, but I suppose if you keep a Sonic collection, this offers decent contrast to most others.

Sonic music has always amused me. I'm a sucker for piano music, so when I saw the mix, it has two things going for it already!

It's a relaxing track, sure. It wasn't everything I hoped it would be, not sure why. But if you enjoy the piano remixes on this site, give this a listen. In my opinion, there are better, but that doesn't mean this one is not a quality mix. Just my opinion, is all.

I'm glad to see this get onto OCR!

The best part of this arrangement is the emotion put in behind it. Rexy does a great job conveying her feelings of a Christmas morning in this.

Great job Bev! And congrats!

Very enjoyable - a 'sweet' mix that could just as easily fit into The Sims (you know, the building music). Although it seems like the judges had some technical concerns with it, I would just like to reinforce the fact that it is a very well done piece of work - one that will be on my playlist for a long time to come. Great Job!

Wow. This is quite a ride... the rhythm jumps all over the place like a bucking bronto trying to shake me off its back, and yet I like it. Slow but lilting, with sharp staccatto accents that emphasize the gaps. Uncomfortable, but addicting. When there are runs (not many) near the end, they stagger like a drunk falling down the stairs on top of the lilting background.

I think listening to this is kinda like eatting spicy salsa. It hurts SO BAD but I just can't stop putting it into my mouth. Thanks! I enjoy! Probably won't be everyone's cup of tea, but for me, this is good. Well done.

I've been waiting forever for a remix of Sky Sanctuary from S3&K, as it was one of the three songs that I felt topped Ice Cap. Understandably, I had very high expectations. When I realized that this was a remix of that, my heart sank.

You can't make just anything into a piano solo. Unless it was specifically composed with the sound and limits of the instrument in mind, it will usually sound unsupported.

I understand the concept behind it, (using rhythm and striking force to convey emotion while the actual melody remains the same) and it works pretty well to convey the mood of the stage. However, it lacks anything to captivate my attention. The tempo was slowed a bit from the already dramatic pace, and the lack of variation in sound makes it difficult for me to focus on, even when I am consciously trying to.

It is not without merit. But it only satisfies me intelectually, and it bores all the other parts of my mind that I like to stimulate with music. I can't say the remix was poorly done, because I'm fairly certain it sounds exactly like Rexy wanted it to, which bespeaks vision and talent. And I would like to hear what he could do if he took it in a different direction. One with more instruments.

In the words of chthonic, I'm "totally a girl". :P

Mind, I'm surprised with the response granted all around it. I for one had a lot of fun playing the piece through, and I'm proud of that. I understand the thought on the slight unease around the higher notes, and should I put forward future works of a similar calibre I'll look into that. Thanks.

Who knows, maybe one of these days I might cover this particular source again, although chances are it'll be a few years before I think of taking that cannon

That's a good remix from Rexy. Also, this song is my favourite of Sonic & Knuckles. The composers from this game are awesome. And this remix is pleasant too. The piano is quite amazing. The life of a piano on the melody will vary. That's an piano, really. And I love the production on this mix. It's pure fun.

Nice work! That's a Rexy-Remixy. =^ ^=

I like this, and as I said somewhere else, I don't even like solo piano songs (even though I'm a pianist).

Nice arrangement of Sky Sanctuary; gives a nod to the original ideas and says something new with the same music. It's what OCR is all about.

Well titled, too. Good job.

Luckily for me, "he" is the correct pronoun in English when gender is unknown. So I don't have to admit that I assumed you were male because you were remixing video game music. :P

I guess the main thing is that, while your remix was good, I still prefer the original. And this is mostly because there is no variation in the sound, what with it being done as a piano solo. Again, I'd love to hear what you could do if you gave yourself more of a range of sound to work with, but I don't expect that to happen.

I'll probably actually have to remix it myself to get something I like done with the song. Which sucks, 'cause I have no experience.

That can be fair in terms of English structure, but...
cleaner recording than her initial version of the track offered
I thought that would have made that a bit obvious :P

I could listen to this all night!!

Absolutely amazing.. You've gotta compose more from Sonic (My favourite Mega Drive/Genesis series of games). You take the music and bring it to a completely new perspective. This is my first review posted, and I couldn't be happier that it's for this brilliant tune!

I had completely forgotten about this track, and listening to this brought so many memories back. I was never a huge Sonic & Knuckles fan, either (more of a Sonic 2 guy), so back when I was just a kid, I only managed to get this far in the game a couple times. It's amazing what memories can come forth when you hear a piece of music like this. Very touching.

I really should go back and play Sonic & Knuckles again. ^_^

Sorry to drag this up again, but...

Am I the only one hearing David Bowie on this track? I swear the melody keeps hinting at "Life on Mars?"

It really comes through listening to Seu Jorge's cover of it, from the Life Aquatic soundtrack.

Well I personally haven't heard of the song up until now, but having been able to check it out a few minutes ago it does have a similar mood to it. Interesting analysis, mind. :nicework:

Sheet music. Thanks for the compliment, and the reminder ^_^

Inbetween exams last may I spent a lot of time in the music labs doing a lot of music-related stuff. Part of it was a bold attempt on publishing sheet music for my piano adaptations. However only two of which ever got published, and luckily for us, Tomorrow's Wake was one of them.

It may be a bit rusty given that I haven't published sheet music outside college coursework before (and the sheet music's key has been brought up a semitone because of my own struggles with working in the key of B), but if you want to fiddle around and make your own version (mwahaha?), feel free to do so.

This is a really fantastically written/arranged piece - but I have a couple issues with some of the more powerfully-played notes, possibly due to my own personal tastes. Please take this as a compliment - I don't think I'd be nearly as jarred by it if not for the sublime near-perfection of the rest of the piece.

Given the above post, are you okay with me getting some piano-playing friends to cover this?

Well, Bladiator doesn't seem to mind when he shares his sheet music, so naturally I shouldn't mind either ;)

Talk about a beautiful remix. It has a somewhat 'jazzy' feel to it. Kinda reminds me of some of the piano in Phish's "Wading in the Velvet Sea."

I think you should most definitely pianoify more Sonic music, Rexy. And yes, pianoify is a word.

Agreed. This is one of my favorite Sonic remixes, simply because its so catchy. I've woken up many a morn' with it running through my head (Not a bad thing, of course). I remember playing it when one of my friends was over at my house; afterwhich he had trouble pulling his jaw off the carpet

All in all, a beautiful remix with some real emotion packed behind the simple notes.

loved that stage, by the way 8)

From the opening notes, this piece made the hair stand up on the back of my neck, and as it progressed brought on that choked up feeling that feels like you've almost got a tear in your eye, but you don't, and won't, but it still feels overwhelmingly like you do, though you couldn't hope to explain why if anyone asked. This and the Castlevania mix won me over. Rexy's work has this haunting kind of innocence to it that I can't wrap words around.

This is the kind of stuff that ruins my entire day if even the smallest noise is overheard during its playing, and reminds me that anything outside the song exists. And that's a very high compliment.

A very mellow piano piece, it sort of lulls you back and forth. I liked it when Rexy took up some speed around 1:60 and started to play on some brighter keys. I don't recognize the actual melody, but since some of the songs from that game haven't really got stuck in my memory, I guess I'll just have to play it just once more.

But overall, I liked this. Instead of playing many keys at once, it had its own pace and own rhytm and didn't have too much balls in the air at the same time. Wonderful arrangement, and well done.

This piece is simply amazing! The way you changed back and forth from piano to fortissimo at just the right times, slowed it down just enough to not really feel as if it too slow--but still keeping you wanting more.....Brings back many memories.

PS-Just so you know, the links to your music sheets seem to be down.

Ah, that's because about a year ago, Herograw's .com server "a splode" in the words of Strongbadzone. I'll edit them later. It's just the same as the usual except they've moved towards his .org server instead.

Thanks again everyone :)

Actually, a nice soft rendition compared to the original, which I can't say is a bad thing.

I think the original can be a bit too hyper and bouncy/happy from the very beginning. It's nice to hear a rendition that really slows it down enough to appreciate the chord progression. LOVE the flat chords from the tonic.

Just my own thought, though, the chords, esp. the beginning sounded like it could have easily been mixed with the Triforce Chamber theme from Zelda: A Link to the Past. Would have been interesting to hear the two melodies interwoven w/ each other.

GREAT work, though.

I'm such a sucker for piano arrangements...

But I'm also a sucker for ReMixes that take a source soundtrack and completely turn it on its ear in terms of genre and composition. It's so nice to see a solo piano arrangement in the sea of electronica and the ilk that seems to flood the Sonic titles.

And this one certainly does it justice! It's relaxing, yet powerful, simply lovely to listen to.

I've found that some of the fastest, happiest and brightest melodies make the best slow melancholy melodies as well. Not that this mix is all that melancholy, but the slowdown is still quite beneficial in a lot of ways.

The arrangement held my interest for the entirety, however the purpose of the mix was really unclear for me. The playing is in a middleground between powerful and relaxing. Not that all solo piano pieces should be one of those two categories, but in this mix especially, I started to think about the actual playing rather than what was being played. Maybe that's my problem and not that of the mixer's.

Anyway, for what this is, it does well. Obviously piano mixes don't aspire to be heralded among the mighty, but I'll always have time for them. Glad to hear another one, and a finely arranged one at that.

Let me take the time to answer your query, sir. :)

The keywords are in djp's description - melancoly, yet hopeful. So if there is a middleground between chill and energy, that's where the intension lies.

Work on the mix itself begun in November of 2004, where after spending 2 enjoyable months of University, I started to feel reflective regarding my return home for Christmas. The general feeling that I ended up having at the time were that I would have some highs and several lows, and whenever I end up experiencing lows, I would disregard it and think of doing my family proud.

It would also apply for similar situations that you might face. You may face several mishaps in life, but you gotta realise that there will be a light at the end of the tunnel. (corny wording, I know, but it works!)

I hope this helps answer your question :)

*melts in the piano* Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh....

I'm lumping this with 600 AD in Piano (http://ocremix.org/remix/OCR01040/) and Silent Progression (http://ocremix.org/remix/OCR01143/)in my relaxation playlist. Can't say much more than this is awesome and emotive playing, with a great piano mixed very well. Almost brings a tear to my eye.

Incredible piano playing in this ReMix. I enjoy hearing piano versions of quite a bit of game songs and it really is interesting that they can not only make the original sound good, but then be expanded and changed to a point where it sounds like a beautiful peace that was always meant for piano. Definitely added to the other piano ReMixes in my collection.

Can't go wrong with Sonic music, or with Rexy solo piano. :-) I really like this and the triumphant sound it forges. The velocity expression and the subtle looseness of the performance implies realism to me. I've heard live piano recordings with a less quality sample even in more modern times. Though I will admit that her recent acquisition of Alicia's Keys has done wonders for the quality of her solo pianos. This song is a lot more uplifting than some of her recent solo piano work that I've heard, and I do enjoy this a lot. But I love the more chaotic and dark side as well. The pacing on this is good, and the performance is smooth and very well performed.

As a big fan of Sky Sanctuary Zone. This warms my heart.
The piano line opening it up gives the image of floating and has a very playful fun nature.
Though at 0:50 it starts getting serious. This always reminds me of playing the stage.
I always go nuts at the landscape and part way through the stage realise that I could have fallen and died a lot.
I love piano remixes. This is easily one of my favourites too.
2:53 just makes me feel happy for my life. I love it sooo much. It's incredible.
And I must truly thank Rexy for making such an inspirational track.
It still inspires me today. I'd like to think there's a little bit of Rexy in my sound. ;-)
