Overall, the mood and emotion of the music changes alot, sometimes slow, sometimes fast and harder sounding, which isn't bad but... it does kind of weaken the entire song overall (although individually I like both parts [the quieter sections and the harder section]).
Overall, very true to the original, a good job turning that little sound clip into a four minute long piece. I would have rather seen the entire song sound like the ending (which is more "rocking" I guess). The title is misleading, as bowser doesn't sound THAT angry until the ending of the song.
Still though, worth the download if you like SMB.

If you're looking for a solid Super Mario Bros. ReMix. . .then prepare to be sorely disappointed. If you're looking for a generic metal song with lots of ripping synthetic guitars and some SMB thrown in for the Hell of it. . .you've got the right ReMix.
In my opinion, this wasn't worth the time it took to download. If I wanted something original and metally(?), I'd hit up Newgrounds or MP3.com or something. This is hardly a ReMix at all. More like an original composition with the Super Mario Bros. theme thrown in here and there just for the Hell of it. And even then, it's only a half-decent original composition. And on that note, this ReMix strongly reminds me of "The Legend of Zelda UnderWorldPressureCooker," by wRenchpilot. . . And not in a good way, either. In a sort of. . ."I couldn't think of anything better to do" way.
I'm sorry, but this completely fails to impress me in any aspect at all. How this became an OverClocked ReMix is beyond me.

I heard this song a long time ago when I signed up at some mp3 site to host a song. I thought it was an OCR mix, but I didn't see it here. Here it is now I guess. Pretty good song.

Woo, my 16th birthday remix! And it's a nice present too. At first it seems just kinda crazy, but when the theme kicks in, it really becomes great. I can see Mario and Bowser fighting against each other in an epic battle with this music. It's great stuff, especially considering the fact you really don't have much to work with. I love it when remixers take simple tunes and manage to turn them into long, full-fledged remixes while still letting the original theme shine through clearly. Bravo.

Excellent remix. I love how the original mix gets stretched, the bassline of the original song gets redone and redone, and then the insane guitar comes out to play. Bravo!

Maybe because those here have better musical listening skills and taste, here. Almost the entire song uses the bass lines and the main lines from the original, reworked with many different instruments in different parts of the song, and extrapolates the main part and the bassline all over the song; sometimes together, sometimes seperate.
But I probably lost you the second I typed "bass lines". I'm guessing you never paid attention to that when you played the original game.

Stepping aside from the flaming here, there is absolutely no question about the level of arrangement here. Like Joseph Collins here pointed out, and it's certainly something I heard on my own while judging it, the usage of the source tune is perfectly recognizeable throughout the major majority of the mix. Even voting NO on it myself, that kind of conclusion isn't even close to true.

I remember that thread by Evil_Ice. I even posted in it a few times. I remember PriZM taking up the challenge. I recall his very first WIP from all the versions to the submission. Personally, this is the style of a remix that I like hereing, a small phrase manipulated over and over to create a new beast. Good job, PriZM.

Metal? Was the remix replaced with another one after you wrote that? I hear nothing even remotely metal about it. Yes, there's guitars ("Heavy" ones at that) toward the end. But that doesn't make it metal. If it didn't have those techno(?) drums, then perhaps I could see some logic in calling it metal.

lots of ripping synthetic guitars
Just wanted to clear something up here. I never use synth guitars, I prefer to record my own. I figured it would be obvious while listening to the song. God I just wish negative criticism was more constructive.
Before we go on about the song being too much original material, I will tell you how I did it. Keep in mind that there are two instruments in the original, one we will call the bass and the other the drones.
0:00 - 0:10 -> Bass line from the source used as an organ intro
0:10 - 0:22 -> Complete original material
0:22 - 0:33 -> aHa ! Same complete original material with the drones played on guitar added to it.
0:33 - 1:20 -> Basically the source with an added drum beat.
1:20 - 2:00 -> Original material following the chromatic structure of the source
2:00 - 2:25 -> Bass line from the source spread over 8 measures, supposed to be recognizable
2:25 - 2:47 -> Same thing with the added drones played on guitar.
2:47 - 3:23 -> Heavy guitars playing my original material with a solo lead guitar playing the bass line from Kondo's song as a melody.
3:23 - 4:00 -> Guitar solo over my heavy rhythm guitar and the melody still playing in background.
4:00 - 4:15 -> One second original material / one second drones.
So 52 seconds of original material always resolving on something from Kondo. This is about 20% of the song.
Anyways I'm not here to prove anything to anybody, just wanted to clear things up, because I spent weeks trying to write something interesting with a 3bars source material without even a melody, and I don't appreciate people bashing on my song without an apparent or justifiable reason.

I was a bit worried that bowser wasn't as pissed as he could be until I heard the electric guitar come in at 2:40 or so, which then made me 110% impressed with this track and its ability to recreate Bowser's theme.
That's so good. This other version is very diversified. You substituted some instruments. And I love the rock concept in 02:47.
Yes. I heard it before in WIP forum. I love it.
Overall, nice mix. I was listening to that more than the original track! Aww, much better. That's really quite cool. Sweeping guitar in my ears. That make me shady laugh. Pure rock! In my opinion, that's really good to a new Mario game. Seriously, in Bowser's Castle or something thus. Because this opens my imagination to frightful things. "Okey dokey!" "Mamamia! We've been nailed by the tools in our pockets!" The beats makes me dance. And the other instruments are great. The melody created is good too (01:18/02:25). Hell! A very high quality mix. Nice work, PriZm. I can't wait to hear more from you in the future.
Cheers.

I thought I'd let everyone know that I come here for the exact same reasons I go to mp3.com and that is why I hate this mix and why I can't think of why it's good because I have too many prejudices on my mind hey look at me I'm 100% critical and can't have any fun or look upon any other intentions of why music is created.
I like this song even on crappy speakers at low volume. It's a unique style, so one listen just isn't going to cut it. Creating the song just for the hell of it, because a random concept came in someone's head? Well I see it as the concept came in the head and then musical creativity was involved every step of the way thereafter, rather than such a haphazard making to get the process done as quickly as possible.
Get some goals straight. Who am I talking to I dunno who cares.
Every song I listen to I come in with prejudices. However, too many times to count I have come out appreciating a song after exposing myself to it. This is based on the music itself, so one could say I am just forming new types of prejudices...yet those new ones are actually valid...and yet I can still be critical of them even though I enjoy them overall. Of course if there are too many points to criticize that would mean overall enjoyment would be gone. IT'S ALL SO SIMPLE and related to the review of this particular remix in so many fashions, that one could call all of those fashions in one number: ZERO! o wait.

Oddity, could you mark more clearly where you're being sarcastic and where not? Text doesn't come complete with vocal intonations.
Anyway, the mix. The mix is good. You took a minimal riff and turned it into something big, powerful, long, and LISTENABLE. For that, you get kudos for certain. I'm not sure my own imagination could come up with something this good in my head from that limited source. Good work!

Not only is that hilarious, but its dead-on. Bowser was just mildly angered at first, but I saw how pissed he was at the end and it was great.
Brilliant.
This is what mixing is about.

The combination of guitar-work, drum and bass, and orchestral stuff blew me away. At first I thought this was going to be based off Rayman 2 as it had a feel to the game's soundtrack, but Prizm does a great job of fooling me. Yup, Bowser's anger is expressed profoundly in this song. Good work.
If anyone else wants another Castle remix (even though it may not necessarily put this one to shame), try Dark Purple's:

All of the good stuff that's already been said is well deserved. Mad guitar skills man but what really took everything is the drum work. Some of that stuff is truly inspired and it sounds like a lot of hard work went into the very fine details. The yell at 2:48 followed by the hard core power chords is absolutely my favorite part of the mix.
This one has been number one on my playlist since its later WIP stages.
What else to say. Congrats on creating a classic.

It's funny, the biggest critical post is about how there's none of the original here, while I spent the entire song enjoying the easter egg hunt of picking out the original bassline... Which was really the main melody of the original... Which was present in almost every bar of this mix. Great stuff, and very nice guitar work.
Excellent work from PriZm, who just popped onto the OCR scene one day and is already gaining some hot cred, including an OCR to his name so early in the game. If only we all could be so lucky.
Ok, scratch lucky. This mix is all about mixing talent. The original has been ripped, turned, bent, shredded, molded and marbroxed in this remix, truly showcasing PriZm's creativity in his various departments. His guitar work is stellar. I love the various stages of this remix; almost reminds me of getting closer and closer to Koopa (KOOPA!) and finally confronting him over the lava pit. HOT.

[/clap] congratulations. With this single, considerably short post, you've managed to insult, as far as I can tell, every member of this community. GREAT job!
Anyway, on to the more important matter at hand, PriZm did a great job of taking one of the most memorable themes in gaming (I mean, come on, when the game pounds the same couple bars into your head several times over 8 levels, how can you NOT remember it) and built it up from the small repeating song, as many have said, into this complex masterpiece. Just the amount of imagination that had to go into this piece using the original material is insane. I love the guitar that comes in at around 3:25. Now that we have a Bowser rock theme, Nintendo just needs to make a cool, evil, gritty Bowser to go along with it. 8) Great mix, keep 'em coming.

OH MAN! That was quite awesome. Very nice beginning and then it gets totally wired! Its a little slow in the middle but its probably to get you ready for the extreme electric guitar later on. And i really like the stops. Earlier you asked for something constructive... well I would only add one thing at the end. Bowser laughing! That would be great. Just one laugh before his bridge falls down (preferably an evil laugh)

It's rare (read: never) that I review songs and I haven't posted anything in the WIP forums in forever, however I just wanted to take this opportunity to say the guitar solo that starts at 3:23 and wraps up this 4:16 of awesome is hands down the best guitar work I have ever heard posted on OCR. It's one of those things that makes you proud to have the song just so you can run around to your friends saying "you've gotta hear this". Definately nice work here. Your skills have earned my infinite respect.

Prizm did one hell of a job on this mix. I've listened to a good number of SMB remixes, and Prizm is the only artist that's took on the castle theme. This remix continues to hold a level of darkness throughout the music. Which is really cool. What would you be thinking if you were just a plumber doing his job, then all of a sudden be in a world where nothing is like your home-world, only to be confronted by a huge monster over 3 times your size? You'd be feeling pretty dark, too! But at 2:47, the song goes ballistic and appeals very much to my metalhead side, pumping up the tempo and the mood. My friends, I don't think Nintendo ever envisioned this kind of feeling when SMB was created. Prizm, keep up the good work! Let us feel it!

I really really do like this one. I probably listened to it four times in a row at the very least when I got it. Just listening to it made me think of villainry metal-style. I think you should try doing a remix off of battle music of any random RPG, preferably one that's not already on the site. If you can take Bowser's castle theme and turn it into something this good, I could only imagine how it would end up if you did something like FF7's Still More Fighting theme.

...holy s***.
I've been ghosting OCremix for sometime now, stealing tracks and listening. I, however, with extensive music knowledge, am very critical of many that I hear. Thus far, about five remixes have really hit me as amazing.
This is one of them.
I was incredibly impressed with this song all over. I was one of those kids that felt lucky to have the original Nintendo when I was young, and one of the games I played the most? You bet your butt it was Super Mario Bros. I played it so much I have very intricate knowledge of the music, and whoever says that this piece is lacking in the original castle theme music needs to take a few classes and listen to the original again. Focus less on gameplay, more on music...afterall, that's what this is all about.
I liked the mellow yet harsh tones at the beginning, but yes, I felt like the track should have been 'Bowser is Mildly Annoyed'. When the guitar slammed in around 2:40, it shifted gears to 'Bowser Wants to Rip Your Throat Out and Wear It As A Hat'. I loved it.
Always at the top of my play list.
Well done, PriZm.

Terrific mix. The frenetic drum beat really is awesome. I love the stutter effects in the beginning and the classic '80's metal take toward the end is equally cool. Great stuff*
PriZm has managed to capture the creepiness of every fourth stage in the NES game in a great electric guitar and percussion beat, and when the song hits 2:47, it really kicks into overdrive.
Get this now. You won't regret it.

RULES. Its incredible how well the original is used here. So much material from such a short and simple YET AWESOME 8-bit loop. I love the heavy metal guitar and the way it keeps the listener waiting. It kicks in in the middle of the song, not right away. Awesome. I also love how the guitar doesn't really increase the energy of the song, but really pumps up the badass meter to the MAX.
GREAT GREAT stuff.

This ReMix is the most awesome thing I've got on my iPod right now. Starts off with a mild, mellow intro, then kicks into electric. Runs about two and a half minutes, then slams into some of the best rockage I've heard, ReMix or not. PriZm takes a song that managed to pump enough adrenalin into your system as an original to kick some ass, and turns it into a rockin', in your face, four-minute package of kickassinage. I don't really pick favorites for ReMixes, but if I did, this could easily be #1.

That's right, DUDE!
This song is a great example of a "progressive" song. It starts out with a basic tune, in Classical Instrumental, then goes to an ever-intensifying section of Techno, which suddenly explodes into a Heavy Metal / Alternative run! Hold on to your britches or they might be soiled when it hits! All this out of a few seconds loop of sound! WOW! Bowser really is pissed!

If this remix went from the end of the intro immediately into the guitar, I'd be much happier. Everything inbetween just feels like filler.

There are masses what shows either a remix being good or bad. The mass of this remix gives something extra:
Amazing and really Atmospherical... It's a great Remix of the old version, i never knew about a remix could be so perfect. There is only one way to describe it: W-O-N-D-E-R-F-U-L. :D . What i really loved was the easy going start an then went totally in to a Electric Guitarr and Drum n' Bass style. It's a great remix, and one of my personal favorites.

ITS BOWSER WIT TEH FIRE BREATH AND HELLFIRE LAVA EVIL CASTLE LEVEL OF DOOM1!!!!111 TIME TO DIE!!! RUN THE F**K AWAY!!!" It definitely got there near the end. I do like how it starts also.
Thanks PriZm for this much needed remix.

wait a sec... did I hear "flight of the bumblebee" in there?
EDIT: also, prizm, what exactly did you use for that lead? I love the tone.

Yes you did hear a snippet of bumblebee :P
What lead ? Do you mean da guitarz ? Or the lead synth that plays in the backdroung ? If that's the case, then it's some synth in Reason, can't remember which.

the guitar playing bumblebee. It has a bluesy feel that I absolutely love.

I used my Ibanez JPM P4, neck pickup (for da bluesy feel), Boss GT3 with my own disto preset (I think I tweaked factory preset Sweet Lead for something like three years before coming up with this one :P) and Mesa Boogie Blue Angel Amp. Recorded with a Shure SM57.
This setup sucks for heavy distortion rhythm, but is damn cool for leads.

I'm listening to this, and, maybe it's the final fantasy addict in me, but i swear i'm hearing a bit of "ff7: Those who fight (ac version)" in there too, after 2:46... the repeating guitar rift sounds just like a bit of it o_o
Coincidence?

Well I'm not sure where you're going with this, but that was all unintentional. The only song I've borrowed from (apart from the obvious castle theme) is Flight of the Bumble Bee.
And by the way, thanks to all of those who have commented on this song.

I downloaded this mix back when it first came out, left the site for about a year, got a new computer, came back and re-downloaded a ot of the old stuff from my old system, and I'd have to say that this is still one of my absolute favorites. It's awesome, anyone who can make this kick-ass a pece out of three measured of looped idiocy. Id have to say bowser is overly pissed, yes. Download it NOW!

I'm still impressed how you managed to take a three-measure theme and turn it into this amazing piece of music that doesn't seem overly repetitive. I love the loud, gritty sound this piece has - I think you've nailed Bowser's personality perfectly with this.
I think this remix captures the feeling of a Bowser Castle level perfectly. It starts off a bit softer and then builds up to the final confrontation very well, with lots of little level obstacles in the way. (The beginning of the castle is never as intense and stressful as the final conflict.) I think my favorite part is at 2:48 where the metal band shows up - I could see this at the point in level 8-4 of the original SMB where you get to the Hammer Bro right before taking on Bowser himself. The tension is building until you confront the Koopa King himself, and then that ending! I couldn't think of a better way to end this song than with the NES sound effects of the bridge going down.
This is an excellent piece to listen to while working out. You can almost feel the heat from the fireballs zooming over your head as you race down the stone corridors. In any case, this is a great audio tour of an old-school Mario game castle level, not to mention just a great piece of music.

This song is so ...manic. It's all over the place! in a good way of course.. it's sweet. I always find myself imagining Bowser waiting impatiently for Mario on his little bridge thing, going insane; pacing back and forth and the like.
Then at 2:48 Mario finally jumps up the step right before the bridge, and Bowser just loses it.
I'm also loving the Flight of the Bumblebee-esque guitar work going on 3:23-3:30ish... actually the guitar solo section 3:23-4:00 is just full-out awesomeness.
AND the 1up sound effect at 1:17... classic!

I'm really surprised at how well the "Flight of the bumblebee" tune and the Bowser theme go together in this way. Very creative and from 2:47 on are well worth the proper build up it got.

Raging adrenaline and righteous Koopa fury!
Production is all over the place, and the source is pretty buried in a lot of places, but overall the good in this one outweighs the bad. Some really creative ideas throughout, and it's definitely worth listening to. I'm glad this one passed the panel. Nice shredding too. :-)

Awesome progressive metal representation! And a terrific mix concept too. I've never considered what the inside of Bowser's head would sound like, but I'm pretty sure this would come close to it. After spending so much time outfitting your lair with booby traps, lava pits and minions, I'd be pissed off watching someone traverse it all without breaking a sweat too.
This mix is littered with ingenuity and complexity, and operates on dual levels of the stylistic spectrum. It goes from technical metal wizardry to an undeniably brilliant traditional heavy guitar climax. It conveys its narrative about as well as any mix I've heard on the site, and does it with style and substance. On top of that, and most importantly, it's just a great listen.
You'd be mistreating yourself to not give this at least a once-through. The genre may not be for every pair of ears, but its hard to deny the amount of skill present in it.
