Shouldn't Boss 1 S3, Boss 1 S&K and Boss 2 come before Final Boss And Doomsday?

I suggest to sort the tracks randomly. Really? i like the way the are now, that way there in the order that they pop up in the game. just my opnion.
Also, on the issue of bandwidth... I seem to recall hedgehog haven taking somthing in the line of tens of gigabytes in 48 hours... thats somthing along the lines off 208 MB an hour... and seeing as this one isnt going to suck, i can assume we will need much more then that.
perhaps making the songs 128kbs to encourage people to download the higher quality bit torrent? the only problem i see with that is that people are impatient and download both, making the bandwidth problem worse. Hm.
Anyways, thats my two cents... *goes back to silent lurking*
I don't know about the 128kb MP3s. There's bound to be some people who just can't use the torrents whatsoever, possibly due to firewall situations and whatnot.

Aye, I had to download and save the Mp3 tracks to my hard drive manually for Hedgehog Heaven.

The songs are being encoded on max quality variable bitrate. This results in the songs being twice the size they would be using 128kbps.
I will not use 128kbps because it sounds like a giraffe ejaculating in my ear. If I find someone encoding the songs from the project in 128kbps and distributing them, I will track them down and fuck their dog.

That's the funniest thing I've read in a long time.
I'm glad you've made that decision. Anyone who uses 128 kbps (for anything other than streaming) should be dragged out into the street and shot.

i understand the reasoning behind not wanting to use 128kbps. however, if you're going to be using max quality vbr (320kbps) what's the point of even having mp3s? that literally isn't compression...hence my reasoning.
I'm sure there'll be a fine balance between file size and compression. Think of it; at least it won't be the pain in the neck that is maximum CBR ;)

In case you're concerned about bandwidth:
- I will set up 3 mirrors for the album files only. Each one has tons of free Gigabytes and unlimited bandwidth (there should be 7 mirrors).
- I will set up a 100 mbits bittorrent seed if I'm provided with a .torrent
- I can host multiple encodings of the files if there's need to, this has yet to be decided.
Also, for websites hosting, I've just set up 2 mirrors, besides main hosting, and if bandwidth becomes a really big issue, I will turn them on (transparent & random redirection).
You can actually test and stress one of the mirrors right here (http://dediboite.poutred.net/~blue/), this way I'll see if it actually sense some sort of tickles (Don't even bother hacking, there's nothing yet).
Feedback about the mirror appreciated.

however, if you're going to be using max quality vbr (320kbps) what's the point of even having mp3s?max quality VBR isn't 320kbps fyi...
EACH frame in a VBR file can vary from 32kbps to 320kbps, according to the complexity of that particular frame (silences are encoded by 32kbps frames, for example). the resulting bitrate is some value in the middle; the higher you set the quality, the higher will be the final bitrate. but it's almost impossible that ALL the frames will be 320kbps each.
when I encode VBR mp3s using the highest quality they usually end out to be somewhere in the 170-200 kbps range.
some good encoders give you also another option, called ABR. that is in fact VBR, but you set a "goal bitrate" instead of a quality, so the encoder will try to get the final bitrate to be *near* the wished one, but still in an average way.

I personally have to do stuff with the final release site, but I'm very busy right now and probably won't get onto it for another week or two. We also need to collect track bio's from each artist, find more mirrors if possible, and get some album cover art. There's probably more than just that, but yeah. I'd say there could very roughly be about a month worth of work.
On the bright side, new tracks will be added to the teaser site soon-ish... probably over the weekend ^^

Hey all,
I was wondering, is this going to be an online-only release? Or are you going to do what OneUp Studios did and release it on a mastered CD set and all that good stuff?
We should have like, a special account, PayPal or otherwise, to do stuff like this. People donate, and then the guys running the show can use it to pay for mastering the CDs, getting the album art and all that good stuff, and then sell it to us OCers. I certainly wouldn't mind donating a bit here and there, and then buying the final product.
But great work on the site and the tracks that are there! Can't wait!

You can't.
All the songs are copyright to Sega, and you cannot sell remixed versions of these songs without permission from Sega. OneUpStudios had permission from Sega to sell the songs they remixed. I'm guessing that OCR gets away with this because all the songs are given away without profit.
The album is actually intended for an MP3 release only.
There are two parts to it. the main soundtrack (which is bigger than one CD) and the special soundtrack. So if you want to burn it properly, you'll need 3 CDs.
WHAT? NO LOSSLESS RELEASE?!?
Also: I'd rather have the boss themes on Disc 2 instead of a 3 disc set with loads of empty space. Maybe you could re-arrange the tracks?
I guess none of that matters to those who use MP3 players...

SnappleMan

This is OCR, there's no benefit to a loss-less release. A high VBR mp3 is as good as it gets.
And yeah, a 90minute CD should be enough. All I've ever used are the standard 70 minute ones, so yeah, I didnt even know those existed.
you don't need that.True, but I want it. Especially since the remixers (or at least I did, for both my track and Hetcenus' Ivory Gadget) sent in full-quality wave files.
If there's going to be no lossless release (wave, flac, shn, ape, or otherwise), at least the mp3s will be encoded at a decent bitrate (http://www.ocremix.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=2483761#2483761).
maybe you can burn CDs REARRANGING THE TRACKS AS YOU WISHI know I could do that. But if there's going to be printable artwork... it's not as easy to re-arrange the tracklisting.
Meh, I'm just nitpicking. In the end, it doesn't really matter how it's released... just that it is. Soon.
Vilecat
07-15-2006, 01:31 AM
Oh stop whining guys. If you want it on CD so badly instead, burn it as a mp3/file CD instead of audio. Problem solved, you'll have all the tracks on a single CD :) And if you don't have any way of listening to a mp3 CD and only audio, well... sucks to be you!
Geez, what's with people nowadays, being lazy and not using their common sense...
For the album art cover, has anything remotely specific been requested? Style, mood, required elements, etc.?
As for the tracklisting, it doesn't have to appear on the backcover, if there's more than a front side made.

When this project was introduced way back in March of '05, I was ambitious and I was just learning how to do this type of thing. I finished and submitted something that really was pretty bad (well, it was the first song I'd ever made), and I'm really quite grateful that someone better than myself now has the track I had done then.
Now, to put it simply, I know what I'm doing - I've done many originals and I may attempt another remix at some point - maybe an OCR submission. But really it was this project that got me going and it helped me to learn a lot about the process. At any rate, I think it's great that this project has finally, finally been finished and will be released soon - and I want to extend a hearty congratulations to all the remixers in the album for providing what may look to be the best project yet.
P.S. - Excellent site - very slick and professional.

Damn. CS was just about to be the most-torrented project yet in about 2 more weeks, and now I have this sucker to contend with. Oh, fudgesickle.
J/K you guys. I hope this thing really, really takes off. Cause, you know, it's all for OCR, right?
Seriously, though, don't try and trump CS. You'll regret it.

This is OCR, there's no benefit to a loss-less release. A high VBR mp3 is as good as it gets.
Such as using LAME 3.97b2 (http://wiki.hydrogenaudio.org/index.php?title=LAME_Compiles) with the high-quality -V 1 --vbr-new setting? Or something similar (http://wiki.hydrogenaudio.org/index.php?title=LAME#VBR_.28Variable_bitrate.29_se ttings)?
I'm always dissapointed when I see a project releasing ~128Kbps MP3s and no lossless counterparts so I can encode them at a better setting. So it's nice to see you're thinking about the sound quality!
Oh, and the website rocks. Hope the project turns out to be just as rad. ^_^

A bit of an update. I've been on vacation for the past few days. Most of my time has been spent trying to get some kind of setup going on this slow ass PC.
As soon as I configure a decent workspace and figure out what I'll be able to actually use, I'll start putting the finishing touches on the project and we'll be able to launch.

I just had an idea about the release...
to save bandwidth during the first rush days, why don't we upload the project on rapidshare? it can stay there for a month, and then it can be deleted.
this will help to save bandwidth from the other mirrors.

I have unlimited bandwidth on 3 mirrors... I've already released a video that generated more than 60 GB of bandwidth in less than 15 days. Besides, one of them will also act as a bittorrent seed...
The project's teaser site generated less traffic that I had originally planned, so I think we can handle it without free hosting websites.
My main mirror is a dedicated server, with a dedicated pipe at 100 Mbits... which means it can deliver up to 1 TB of data per day.
SnappleMan told me there was 4 mirrors, not counting the two more I set up in case the website would be down.
I seriously doubt bandwidth will be an issue.
Anyway, you can always test my bandwidth here (http://dediboite.poutred.net/~blue/) : tell me what speed you get, what speed you usually get on other mirrors, but so far I've been getting around 9 MB/s to various servers around the world.

Wow, i'm a long tome user of OCR...and this is my first post. This project is the one I've been waiting for, I've had thoughts as I listen to S&K music like, "now you know what would rule, if snappleman or braincells, or maybe sir nuts remixed this." the foremost one in my mind is the boss two theme. Then I see that I get BOTH snappleman and braincells in the same song. I literally hollered at the top of my lungs, "OH YEAHHH!" when I saw this. So, can't wait for the release and keep up the good work!

I don't see why we can't make a torrent for this. All we need is a couple dedicated seeders, someone to make the torrent, and the internet.

I would be all too willing to seed.

I can probably set up a bittorrent client on one of the computers at work to seed as well. It's left on all day, and no one's there from 4:30 in the afternoon to 9 the next morning. And even when there are others using the internet, it's at most 4 people.

I suggested a non-torrent based solution because there are several people who can't (or doesn't want) to use torrents. I can't, for example.
I still think a Rapidshare (or whatever) free mirror will help a lot in the first days.
Yes, "unlimited bandwidth" are good words, but I don't know how the servers will react when hundreds of people will try to download songs at 200kB/sec, or even more.
I'm not worried about my server, of course. I just want that people can get an adequate download speed even in the first rush that will be obvioulsy a bottleneck.
but again, just my 0.02€
But if there's no torrent solution, then that'll mean that all the people who normally use torrents will be adding to the 'bottleneck'.

A direct download solution is good too but IMHO Rapidshare is kinda annoying to use... a download "wait" timer and they block you for ~1 hour if you download more than one large file at a time. If you could find a less annoying solution it would be much appreciated.
...Course, I'm likely going to be using the torrents anyway, so feel free to ignore this opinion. ;)

07-21-2006, 06:23 PM
Well, I hope there's at least one good server, so I don't have to use torrents (which i can't). Thats is because I get wireless internet from my dad who thinks he has to have like 5 virus programs, 2 software firewalls, and the firewall in the modem turned on to be safe from "computer viruses". I've disabled the firewall many times, but now he put a password on rhe settings (working on getting around that). Right now no BT for me.
BLueBeRRyKiWi
07-21-2006, 08:48 PM
I do also find Rapidshare & alikes really annoying because of the timers, ads, & stuffs.
It's not something personnal, Nineko ;), I'll live even without the world cup
What there will be at launch time:
- at least 4 HTTP direct-download mirrors (if not 5-6). The project's website currently handles up to 5 links for each song. Clicking a link and instantly downloading the tracks is far less annoying than having to click 2-3 buttons, suffer from 4 more pop-ups and timers and finally downloading.
- a dedicated 100 Mbits BT seeder. Again, this is a fully managed machine, I have full access on it, it is monitored by 4 people including me, no personnal hosting as ISP may provide. I will make the .torrents, but can someone tell me who's in charge of OCR's tracker ? DJP hasn't replied my PMs yet.
- I have already set up 2 additional HTTP mirrors, in case of a (very unlikely) sudden failure of our servers.
- I came up with a transparent redirection script that can randomly select between mirrors. This would cause users to be redirected to a mirror website, having different links, etc.
- The main page, which currently hosts the teaser website (www.projectchaos.info) is hosted on another dedicated machine. There will be NO song hosted on this machine, just the websites.
To sum everything up, we DO have :
- 3 dedicated servers, 1 for the websites only (and I really mean professional hosting dedicated servers)
- 4 HTTP mirrors
3 days ago we released 2 50 MB videos on a pretty crowded website and we barely hit 3 Mbits/s average, 1% CPU, which litteraly begs for more load.
Plus, I will have some friends seeding the project uppon release.
As of yesterday, the teaser website got 15824 hits (each file, image, page is counted as one hit), and has generated almost 2 GB of bandwidth (~140 MB per day) which is far less than I expected.
I honestly think we won't have to bother with such annoying sites as Rapidshare, Megaupload, etc. as we already have far more ressources than is needed.
Anyway, trust me, during the first hours after the release I will be constantly monitoring my mirrors, if something looks like it's going bad, I will find backup solutions.
PlastikBag
07-21-2006, 10:36 PM
I have to agree that rapidshare is just a bad idea. It would take away from the professionalism of this project. With a site as nice as you've constructed (if the teaser site is only a hint of what's to come), it would suck to link to a site infested with pop-ups, waiting in long lines, and putting in a code for average speeds.
Nineko
07-21-2006, 11:02 PM
to be honest, I think that you are right.

Try one of these mirrors for the flash website :
http://dediboite.poutred.net/~blue/s3k/flash/ (dedicated server)
Direct address: http://88.191.22.142/~blue/s3k/flash/
http://blueberrykiwi.free.fr/s3k/ (ISP hosting)
http://blueberry437.free.fr/s3k/ (ISP hosting)
It looks like your ISP is having DNS issues.
Try typing the following in a DOS console :
nslookup projectchaos.info
You should get this answer section:
Non-authoritative answer:
Name: projectchaos.info
Address: 87.98.197.40
(Don't bother accessing it via this IP, since I'm using vhosts it won't work. You may edit your hosts file though, to trick your system: C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts and add a proper line)
Another trick would be changing one of the DNS Server addresses in your network interface properties (TCP/IP settings) and use these ones : 4.2.2.1 / 4.2.2.2 (I've just checked: they DO have a record for the website).
Anyway, all the mirror websites are updated at the same time.
Hope this helps.

Well, under the right circumstances I can turn out a decent song in a day or two. It would be sad to lose anyone from this project, but, rules are rules.
It's harsh, yes. But most people don't know how this project was handled from the beginning. KFC and I split the tracklist and enlisted the artists that way. So half the album I pretty much had nothing to do with other than listening to demos or final versions of peoples songs. In the case of the people who I enlisted, I specifically told them the rules. If anyone asked me if they could do something with their track, chances are I'd aprove of it, but to have someone go over me and submit without asking, that's grounds for a boot in the ass.

Well, everyone put in so much hard work, waited so long, and produced such great tunes that we can't just forget and ignore the best of the WIPs. This way people can have alternate interpretations of their favorite songs.
Oh yeah, I added a new track to the album, check the first post.
We should all be kicking ourselves in the ass for not including that... :\

@snappleman >> when are we allowed to submit our remixes to OCR if we wish to do so ?
For anyone it may concern, submit your tracks now if you were planning to and haven't already done so.
Yeah, if anyones song so much as hits the judges panel before the project is released, I will kick them and their song off the project.
Well, since I'm gonna be involved with most of what hits the panel, nothing from the project will make it there yet. But it's better if stuff goes through the process now, so that there are tracks ready to post by the time the project is fully ready and goes live. Work it out amongst yourselves then.

Are you going to do both of the themes (Sonic 3 and Sonic and Knuckles), or just one of them?

Looks like the Sonic 3 & Knuckles (Or Sonic & Knuckles, since they were identical) version, according to the tracklist.

I used that exact picture as reference material, but I did not intend to do the exact same logo, especially with bevels and edges.
There are a few glitches though, photoshop messed up with anti-aliasing on some rounded parts.
However, I like the way it is, I wouldn't have bothered re-making the logo if I wanted the exact same result. I still have the cartridge, and a scanner.

Pssh, please. Michael Jackson doesn't compose music: He has a crew do it for him. Therefore, if anything related to Michael composed any music for Sonic 3, it was the crew that composes his songs, not Michael himself.

Since the project started, they survived almost 3 or 4 hard drive chrashes or ipod deaths. I kept those preciousssses on my home server, and finally, they got what they deserved :)
But some WIPs are newer versions, or tracks that weren't posted at the beginning, so stay tuned

The "Theme of knuckles" (witch is more of a percussion/drum beat, than a song) is actually included in one (that i know of) song in the project, youll have to guess witch one though...

Judging that this is Sonic 3 & Knuckles, we'd have to collect the 7 Chaos Emeralds, and then the 7 Super Emeralds, along with the special Golden Emerald.
Or we could press <, <, ^, ^, >, >, while hanging on the first vine in Angel Island Act 1 to unlock the Sound Test.

See that you have to do the code using a special pattern. UP (wait), UP, DOWN (wait), DOWN, UP (wait), UP (wait), UP (wait), UP.
Since the Genesis controler can't press UP-DOWN at the same time, you will understand that you have to succeed pressing UP and one fame and DOWN at the next frame with no interruption!
(wait) simply means you must have at least 1 frame of interruption between button presses.
Sonic 3 was made in Japan on 50 Hz PAL so I guess it's extreamly hard on NTSC 60 Hz. However, it is possible to do the code. I did this code with NTSC 60 Hz enabled in Gens. I succeed most of the times. I got the pattern from testing frames and key presses with a debugger, so this is the only way, and it works.

Uhm, originally there was going to be a mini-game you had to complete to unlock the tracks, but I think it'll just be a straight download instead. The mingame never got further than a beta - that is to say it works, but isn't nearly polished enough for mass consumption. It was pretty cool though, I may still post the unfinished version. But yeah, bonus tracks will probably just be a zip file download, probably 128kbps.

I had a talk with DJPretzel a few days ago, and we've decided it be best to let OCR1500 go first. So once that's done and sunk in, we'll start the release process.
The website is done save for filling in the info and uploading the tracks to it. All mirrors will get the tracks early, once everyone is uploaded we will set up the site, take off the protection and let it loose on the world.
Oh damnit, I'm on holiday for two weeks starting monday. I assume the project will be out then?

Speaking of mirrors, I e-mailed that guy, Thrawn, but haven't got any reply yet.
Anyone who's offering hosting, please contact me either by email, PM or MSN (pierrecap@yahoo.fr), we'll plan things up together.
It would be better if you had SSH access on the machine, or could provide an FTP account, as transfers would be done in no time. And I've been told the project's size would be around 170 MB, be prepared for a bit more (especially If you were to mirror the bonus tracks, as they currently use 30 MB).
I can't also estimate how much bandwidth it will generate, currently the teaser site hit 4.5 GB in 17 days, 27000 hits, and yesterday was the highest peak with 1 GB of transfer, getting higher and higher every day.
EDIT: We can also have partial mirrors, as links for each song are independent on the website. Even if I don't know the final size, people with only 150 MB should be able to host ther the main soundtrack or the special themes disc.

You could always use an emulator... not that i encourage piracy, but the game is next to impossible to find these days.
Its really something, when you compare it to the rest of the games that were released on the sega it blows them out of the water, better graphics, game play and sound. They did a good job.

Hm. I dunno, do you think it would be worth the bandwidth to zip the files? i can see people selectively choosing which ones to download, seeing as they can hear them in the background anyways. Even a directory listing seems better then forcing every song on people.

I would love to see what you've come up with for the mini-game. I might even be willing to wait for it...
Else, imitating S3&K's cheats/debug mode would be cool.
--ooh! Or entering a code relating to the release date! (Yeah, that's never been done before! )
Might I also ask for higher bitrate encoding; like 160 or 192? Since this isn't OCR, you know that we can have higher filesizes than 6MB.
I wonder if I'm the only one on this project who has never played the game. Blasphemy, I know. But I never owned any Sega systems.
It can happen. Like, I did some stuff on the Cave Story project and I have no intention of actually playing the game because of unreliable computer hardware.
Still, you have some good choices on playing the games through and through. Whether it be emulation or Mega Collection (presumably on your XBox?) I hope it goes down with you ;)

Fixed.
But whatever you do, don't play S&K Mega Collection for the PC (if you even can still). That was my 1st exposure to the game and it left a real bad aftertaste that lasted for years.

But still, while emulation is good, it's no good without the actual gaming setup, rather than sitting in front of a computer with a joystick. But that's probably me forcing my opinions on you O.o
