I know what it is, Akuma just signed the T&C for Apple and is becoming the world's first Human CentiPad. Some computer problems, indeed.

I lol'd. :nicework:

GTA: Don't worry, when I actually get down to making a mix, I get it done in a couple days at most, generally speaking. I work quickly, once inspiration hits. You can ask Emunator to verify this, if you must, and I'm pretty sure Hylian knows I'll get my work done on his project, too. Bear in mind that I (and a bunch of other people, I suspect) am finishing up a grueling semester of college in which I had the misfortune to take 17 credit hours and am almost-failing one very tough class. I also work part-time, am about to start a full-time summer internship, and have lots of other "life" duties as well. Cut me a bit of slack. Also, do consider this--I'm prioritizing projects in order of when deadlines hit, and the Oracle project still has a lot of deadline left.

Bear this in mind as well--I'm not totally devoted to OCR, music-wise. I have other projects. Some of them I get paid for, and some of them have much tighter deadlines. OCR is a hobby that I happen to be really good at.

My post urging everyone to hurry was meant to be in good fun, hence the ":-D" at the end, as well as the prominent use of the word "y'all." I'm a bit surprised that someone who's not even a project artist, let alone director, is calling me out for not working on music that is entirely voluntary (and which I still have every intention of completing).

tl;dr I'm cranky because I have too many finals and some guy who doesn't make music is calling me out for something I didn't do. Also, Brandon is funny.

I just bought Donkey Kong Country 3 Advance yesterday.
The temptation was too big, since the game has a totally new soundtrack - it wasn't too expensive either :)
I'm going to play through it and enjoy the new music, trying to forget the old tracks so I can judge the new ones for the quality and not just compare them.

C'mon guys! Get it done :D
I'm dying of anticipation here! xD

Right on man, this is what I like to hear. Dave Wise is a VGM legend and it's a shame that so many people can't appreciate the new OST (or won't even give it a chance) because they're so hung up on comparing them to Eveline's original score. Both soundtracks are TOTALLY different (in fact, the GBA one was composed because it would have taken too long to properly port the SNES soundtrack and so Dave just wrote a brand new soundtrack that was better suited for the GBA soundchip) but have their own merits that make them awesome. Seriously, it means a lot to me and Cody that the project is exposing people to the other half of DKC3 :-)

Anyway, status update; the last 5 artists don't seem like they're going to be finishing anytime soon. So, we're thinking about just releasing the preview a bit early to tide you guys over, cause the next month or so is going to be a tough wait for everybody involved or interested in the project :\ We're about 75% done with the final preview so I'll keep you all posted! Sorry about the wait, we're doing what we can without wasting the extensive effort that all 5 of the remaining artists have already put into their songs.

Wait a minute. What is David Wise's contribution to this track?

He did mixing/mastering on it and contributed a solo section to the climax of the song. And yes, it's amazing. Not the first time a composer has collaborated with a remixer to remix their own work, but still... it's a stellar remix and shows off Monkey Kong and Dave Wise at their best.

Oooh, Heart of the Cave... I can't speak for Rozovian (or anyone else for the matter) but the remix is absolutely wonderful. 8 1/2 minutes might seem like a long time for a remix, but please take my word when I say every second of it is fully warranted. It's sure to please fans of the original and first-time listeners alike!

When I first found this project thread I was honestly a little skeptical at the thought of a DKC3 SNES/GBA soundtrack remix project (mostly because I hold both versions in such high regards and thought it'd be difficult for people to remix certain tunes appropriately). However, with the amount of high quality, true-to-the-source remixes churned over the last year, I've really been proven wrong. And it's my pleasure to admit it :)

Truly great work to everyone who has helped with the project thus far, it wouldn't be the same without each and every one of you.

I really like the GBA soundtrack too.
Even though nostalgia wants me to like the original soundtrack more, I actually find each soundtrack to be good in its own way.
I don't think I've heard a better soundtrack with better quality for the GBA. The sound is so clear it's unbelievable.

If you know what you're doing with it, yes it is. Otherwise it's just a weird meandering thing that doesn't know where it's going or how it's gonna get there. In that case, it's better to have a short but well handled one instead.

The only two other people I know who've successfully made 8 minute remixes of single source tracks are Disco Dan (Blue Lightning) and bLiNd (that Trenches remix of which the name eludes me). And I know that Rozo can do something equally well. I can't wait to hear it, and everything else, and then review it.

It was really just a one-time thing, but all they had to do was ask :-P Pretty bold move (and, for the sake of his sanity, I wouldn't recommend everyone rush in and ask him for solos on their mixes too) but it does show what you can get if you've got some guts and you're in the right place at the right time.

Hey, for all the anticipators out there, me and Flexstyle are spending the weekend at his place doing final prep work on all of the album (minus the few songs that are still in the red... crossing our fingers that those won't hold us up.) But when this weekend is over, we'll have final mastered, encoded, tagged, and (where appropriate,) gapless playback-enabled MP3s and FLACs for about 95% of the project. The rest will come shortly after. We are going to make a huge amount of progress this weekend and be well on our way to release.

GET EXCITE! :-D

I love how I click this topic's bookmark about 30 times a day when I not only know what's going on, but oftentimes remind Emunator that he forgot to update the project thread. Goes to show how excited I am in general that this album's almost coming into complete fruition, hahaha, and I could only imagine how excited everyone else is.

But trust me when I say that everyone project-related has been doing an absolute hell of a job working on this album in general. As an avid fan of both the SNES/GBA soundtracks I can tell anyone straight up, 100% honest that this album truly is the ultimate tribute to DKC3. An enormous thank you to Emunator, Flexstyle and everyone else for shaping this album into what it's become; it's an absolute honor and a privilege to be on the project and seeing it blossom before my eyes has been a real wildride and an experience I'll never, ever forget.

I've been wanting to post something like this for months so I figured now would be a good time since the album is so close to completion :D

Alright, I am ecstatic to report that, as of this moment, we're walking away from our 3-day mastering... fest with 60 final WAVs that are all properly adapted for gapless playback. This is a pretty monumental accomplishment, and we can expect the last 10 songs that we don't quite have mixed down in the next week (with perhaps only one or two exceptions.)

Needless to say, the project is VERY close to completion. I'm gonna encode/tag everything tonight and tomorrow and start prepping the final release package for submission to OCR. In the meantime, we'll also be pumping out a final video preview for your listening/viewing pleasure in the next week. You'll also finally see a preview of what we're doing with the artwork, which I can confidently say is the most unique artwork package of any project yet.

That's the status so far, everybody's contributions are sounding unbelievably good and me and Flex are both very proud of how it's turning out. Hopefully you'll agree when this drops!

Please, don't misunderstand me though.
You're a very talented artist (I especially like your Nintendo and Blizzard related work), but I personally prefer the original art style of DKC.
It saddened me that they didn't stay closer to it in the newest game : /

Knowing that it's flash I therefore understand your art choice. Complex characters are harder to animate :)
At least you stayed relatively true to their body shape and characteristics. It's when I see stuff like this I get sad:
http://fc07.deviantart.net/fs8/i/2005/342/6/d/Dixie_Kong_by_Duckboy.jpg
Nothing's left of the attitude of Dixie, she looks general and boring. I may be a bit too traditional when it comes to the DKC series, because it's my favourite Nintendo series of all time :)

Nintendo was only wrong to publish most of that shovelware. They only developed the White Four (Wii _____ titles). IIRC, most of the shovelware was developed by Data Design Interactive. *Beep* That 3rd-party support was awful, but they released 3 good Mario games, 1 good Donkey Kong title, 1 good Zelda, 1 good Metroid, 1 good Smash Bros, the first 2 No More Heroes titles, and Monster Hunter Tri, but the Mario Kart title was really love-or-hate.

You should feel ashamed too, but just in general. Nothing to do with your songs.

Good news though, at long last, we've finally got a WAV from HoboKa (with an assist by the fantastic Flexstyle) for Boss Boogie SNES. This updated version is a lot more gritty, taking inspiration on the sound design side of things from soundtracks like DOOM and Quake. We're including the original master from audio fidelity that didn't get past the judges panel on the bonus disc, so you can hear what it sounded like before Flexstyle got his dastardly hands on it ;-) Either way, it's a hell of a track in its final form!

You there, down below! Stay calm, don't move! We'll airlift you to safety okay? Thank you Mountain Rescue, I was nearly done for. No problem, it was our pleasure, we also get paid to do this."

It's been great checking back here once in a blue moon to read crap like Emunator offering his body in return for track completions, AkumajoBelmont vocally summoning armies of undead, etc. Keep up the good work guys, you're so close!

The album's sorely lacking in orchestral and/or metal representation, and his song has both!
Yes! that is full of win!

I've been following this thread for a long time, and it's very exciting to see how much progress has been made. I'm very much looking forward to the album release :)

That said, I have a question. AkumajoBelmont and Protodome both have songs that aren't being doubled up on. If they get cut from the album, will those two songs (Enchanted Riverbank for SNES and Frosty Frolics for GBA) go unrepresented? It would be really sad if that were the case, so if it is, I really hope AkumajoBelmont and Protodome get their stuff sent in on time.

Cody Wedel

If that happens (which we all severely hope doesn't) we'll probably have to find someone reliable to do an extremely quick remix of whichever tracks are open. At least, that's what I suggested to Emunator. In all honesty though we're just going to hope for the best in the meantime and cross that path if it comes. However, on a positive note, all the artists are well aware of the deadline and promised finished tracks by then :D

Jeff already sent his violin stems to Theophany, so he should probably be in the clear.

^^ This is completely true. We're not going to let those two tracks go unrepresented. But in all honesty, I'm probably not going to let those two artists back out on their tracks either, because the WIPs are insanely unique and original and I don't think there's a single artist on this site who could replicate it. Hope that answers your question :-)

Good to hear! I've been (silently) following this project since last year, and although the delays can be annoying, I'd much rather wait for a final project then get an unfinished project now. Based on the previews, I'm sure the wait will be well worth it in the end.

Alright, I promised you guys and update, so an update you shall get. I was hoping to wait until we officially had the album submitted for evaluation, but that's a few days off, I guess.

Right now, we're just waiting on AkumajoBelmont's Enchanted remix. Once that's in, we'll have one remix of every single theme on both OSTs. That'll make this the first of the DKC projects that actually fully covers the soundtracks they're remixing (the last two OCR DKC albums omitted the fanfare themes and game over themes.) Aside from Enchanted, all of our final WAVs have been mastered by Flexstyle as necessary, cut as part of a gapless album and encoded in FLAC and MP3 and roughly tagged according to OCR standards. That means that we've got release candidates for... just about everything :-)

I can report that the gapless playback sounds gorgeous but tastefully-done; we took a lot of measures to do that process right without shoehorning it in on tracks where it wouldn't sound good. tl;dr: Flex did a fantastic job on working in gapless integration, and it absolutely enhances the album quality. Think Kong in Concert, but without certain tracks being rendered unlistenable outside of the album because of overly-awkward cut-ins and cutoffs.

I can't firmly speak to a release date, but I'm hoping to at least be finished with the evaluation phase by the end of the month. I'll be pushing those who're evaluating the project to make that happen and I'll be finishing my own evaluation up shortly to help facilitate. After that, I'm not entirely sure what the OCR schedule looks like, but I'll post updates as I know more about when we're able to release. It all depends on staff availability and the existing project queue.

Final artwork/media preparations are underway. Mine and Cody's contribution to that package is finished after hundreds and hundreds of hours of collective work, and The Maverickk is making some last-minute changeups to his album art package that should be finished in the coming weeks. That means we'll have an album cover to share with everybody! :-D As for the video previews, we're a little bit behind schedule on releasing those, I said I wanted to release an extended audiovisual preview ahead of time to tide everybody over while we wait for evaluation, so I'm talking with Drew Gourley to see what we can do to get that to market. It may be a bit of a wait though just to ensure that we have a quality final product. He's also at work on the project website, which will be made from the ground up instead of using a template, so that's definitely worth getting excited about too!

Here's some final stats on the album: 64 remixes + 12 bonus mixes = 76 remixes total by 64 unique artists, clocking in at nearly 5 hours and 20 minutes of playtime spread across 4 discs. I'm going to state this here first because I anticipate that I'll be saying it a lot in the future: this album is NOT MEANT TO BE LISTENED TO IN ONE SHOT. We specifically chunked up the album so that it can serve as 2, 3, or even 4 individual listening experiences, depending on how you cut it up. So I don't want to hear anyone complaining about how the album is "too long" :-| The album will be just as good if you treat each disc as an individual project.

To all project artists and contributors, another thing you have to look forward to sometime in the next month is our internal listening party, where everyone will get a pre-release copy of the album and we'll have an IRC party over the span of a few days and share our opinions with the rest of the artists. For many of you this'll be the first time you've heard completed songs outside of your own or on the project forums, so hopefully a lot of you will be able to make it! I'll be in touch personally as more details develop.

On top of that, we've still got an absolutely mind-blowing secret that we've kept up our sleeves that'll reveal itself when the time is right ;-) Not gonna drop hints or anything but keep in mind that the biggest bombshell of the project is still yet to be revealed!

I think that pretty much covers everything. The music is sounding absolutely fantastic, so much better than I ever could have imagined when I started the project. Everyone brought their A-game here, that much I can say for certain. The tracklist you see on the first post is final, and looking over that should give you a lot of reasons to be excited. We've got artists like Prophecy, Matt Drouin, and mv who haven't remixed anything in over half a decade returning with some stellar material, some long-await collabs such as halc & anosou finally coming to fruition, musical contributions by Dave Wise himself, and remixes done in genres that have never been heard before on OCR.

That's pretty much all I've got to say for now. I'll keep posting as things develop but hopefully this will serve as the obligatory GETHYPE post you've been looking for ;-)

Cheers!

Hahaha, well, you probably weren't wrong in thinking that :-) I mean, when I started this up I was some random n00b off the forums with no street cred who'd been involved in the community for maybe 2-3 months, tops, and I had no proven (or even professed :-P ) musical talents. My codirector kinda falls under the same category, more or less, so I wouldn't blame anyone for being skeptical. However, we both had our hearts in it 100% and we both also had a ridiculous amount of free time this last year and a half, so I think it worked out well. We had a lot of help from some very dedicated musicians who helped make it all happen, too, and we're eternally indebted to all of you :-)

We're doing everything we can to make sure the wait is quick, so just hang tight for a bit until then!

I spliced it together from custom-recorded footage recorded by Cody, and synced it with over 11 minutes of remixes. I believe we touched on 20 songs in the preview. Okay so this is what...the 3 millionth revision of my remix, this time with Flexstyle. The style is a hybrid of orchestral (original I know) and Nine Inch Nails-ish electronica. I must say I'm sort of tired of the source tune and hope to the flaming Gods I don't have to touch it again.

The real question is: does that matter in regards to this album coming out? The answer is no.

Each album gets a small amount of "floodposts", left up to the discretion of both the OCR Staff (mostly djp) and the album director. There's no set number of songs for the flood, nor a set percentage of tracks that will be flooded. It depends mostly on album size combined with track quality. It is rare to have over six or seven flood mixes unless the album is unequivocally huge. Beyond floodposts, it merely depends on who subbed their tracks and got them passed by the judges panel.

I would be looking at this album based on its own merrit, rather than comparing it to Kong in Concert or Serious Monkey Business. :nicework:

I am so ecstatic that this project is coming to an end and it will get released soon. I seriously can′t wait. Big thanks to everyone who is making it. It is very appreciated. Sometimes, when you get older and start to work or have other preoccupations, you have less time and will to play games. That is when amazing music like DKC series music is one thing that you can enjoy as much or more than the game that it comes from. Remixes add new dimension and freshness to something that is already great and it also brings back memories. In combination, this is one of the best things I could have wished for and one of the things I am looking forward to the most in 2011.

Please, release the albums not after the post 1000 of this topic. What do you say about that? :)!! Hehe..The video preview would be fine by than! I am a patient guy. I am positive you will make sure it is top quality before you release it. Quality is more important than anything. Take your time and deliver this amazing thing to us when it is ready.

Not much to report, we're still waiting on Enchanted and a few other semi-optional songs. The video is delayed because of Drew Gourley's lack of computer, which I think should not be a problem anymore.

Trust me dudes, I'm bored too. I'm off working on a bunch of other projects right now because there's literally nothing to do here until a few people get their stuff done. I've got a 95% tagged/encoded batch of songs and I'm about halfway through my evaluation of the project, so I can't really think of much else that can be done by me :\ I'm trying to push as much as I can without sacrificing the quality of the end product. You'll thank me down the road when this project releases (later than expected, but still) and these last few tracks are on the project in finished form, they're going to be worth it. Same goes for the preview that Drew's working on. I'd rather wait and release something awesome than do something half-assed.

Sorry for the delay everybody :-( It sucks and we're getting lapped by a bunch of other projects, which pushes our release window back further and further everytime another project wraps up... all I can do is promise you it'll be worth it even more than you could expect from the previews and tracklist that we've dropped so far.

Exploration C - Weren't you wondering what kind of Exploration? *_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*

You know, listening to your mix, the connection wouldn't surprise me at all x) I always come up with the weirdest visuals to accompany your song in particular, it's such a trip :-)

This is kind of a tangent, but I'm a very visually-oriented person so with almost every song, I come to associate it with a color, gradient, or pallet... I love how when I listen to this album straight through, I end up seeing every color dozens of times throughout the whole experience. For example: Mono, your track is kind of nebulous to me but it always comes out sounding like a pale, mossy shade of green to me with some whitewashed earthy hues mixed in. Not sure if that's because of the personal object/setting associations I've made with your song, or if I just perceive certain tones/instruments/moods the same regardless of the context of the song.

I dunno if anyone else views music in this way but I thought I'd share that since it's something that I'm pretty sure I've done ever since I was young when I started seriously listening to music. Game music is weird because the game music is inseparably tied to the environments they're originally used in... I wonder how my visualization of the DK3 soundtrack would compare to someone who's hearing it for the first time without ever playing it... Maybe some of the remixers on the project who haven't played the game could chime in on this?

I swear I'm completely sober right now.

DKC3 does not advocate the cool cool act of using drugs

True Story: Funky's Joint was going to be a full on vocal track about Funky's Joint being an actual product, banana-flavored weed. But I had a sound effect at the end of the song of a woman saying "Oh yes, wow!" As if she had enjoyed the joint. Emunator got all high and mighty and was like "NO SOUND THAT IS EVEN REMOTELY SEXUAL IS ALLOWED ON THIS ALBUM" and I kept trying to explain it's not a sex sound, it's a post-weed-smoke sound of enjoyment. But Noooo he didn't understand, and Funky's Joint is half a song as a result. :-)

So drugs = ok

Idea of sex = bad

Hahahaha, soooo much caffeine. And the puns... they were just bad at first but like anything, they've got a way of groan on ya' ;-)

Seriously though, this must be one of the first times that a lot of the backend album work has actually been done in person, and it's infinitely more fun that way :-) Mike's been totally awesome throughout this whole process, giving me rides, allowing me to crash for up to 2 or 3 days at a time at his place, showing me all sorts of cool places to eat, and generally keeping things entertaining... it's been one of the best parts of the whole album experience :-) For a guy who hasn't even played DKC3 to dedicate that much time to making songs, fixing other songs, mastering things, and making sure the final release package is as stellar as it can be is pretty commendable.

Emunator

Actually, my guess is that José will tackle the release preview, Drew is just handling the teaser video that we're releasing on our own. We haven't started work on the actual trailer, which will be a lot less about showcasing individual songs (the teaser we're working on has approximately 30 second clips accompanied with game footage) and more about advertising the project as a whole. What we're going to release soon will be a lot more like the video preview we've already put out, except... prettier :-)

Can you define "each and every one of you" please? :)

Wes and I did our share of the preview over 3 months ago (he synced 11 minutes of remixes with SNES/GBA gameplay footage I recorded to accompany the video). We've been waiting this whole time on Drew Gourley to make the preview really shine, and to be honest the wait shouldn't be much longer now (I know, I know, we keep saying that, but it's the truth :P)

Holy mother of god did we just get an updated WIP for this project?

I think we did.

And I can say with confidence that it's good. Damn good, even. Theophany's made quite a splash on OCR this last month and when he's teaming up with the incredibly-talented Jeff Ball and OCR-legend Harmony, the result is nothing short of brilliant. This is the 5th time that Jason has delivered a genre-bending, pristinely-produced, emotional remix for the project that lives up to the reputation he's built for himself with his recent Metroid mixes. In short, thanks to Theophany for being one of the key factors in making this album what it is today. Your efforts are appreciated more than you know :-)

Just in the interest of full disclosure, right now we're waiting on Theophany to put the finishing touches on his track (and possibly get one more instrumentalist on board) and do some nifty gapless playback work to merge it with mine and Cody's Game Over arrangement, Prophecy to finish up Enchanted (no idea where this one is at right now) Theophany to whip up a bonus remix of Water World with a more ambient spin (since the main album version, while being an absolutely mindblowing arrangement, does get pretty aggressive at times, which might not be what everyone's hoping for in a remix of Water World) and Tweek to finish up his mix for Chase SNES if he's still on board... I haven't heard from him in ages.

On the music front, that's pretty much it. Everything else is locked in and ready for evaluation. Art, trailer, and website are still lagging behind, not much progress to speak of there. Hopefully this will change soon, we got a mockup sketch for the front cover the other day and it's got massive potential to be incredibly awesome. I've got full confidence that Mav will handle it with the utmost care and effort :-)

I feel like a broken record here because this is pretty much the exact same thing I said months ago. But we are making some progress, and I can ultimately say that Theophany's track alone will make all this waiting worth it, not to mention all of the other goodies that are still not quite ready yet.

Much love, everybody. Your continued patience and support is immensely appreciated <3

If you keep stalling to add new songs, I'm gonna tell your mom on facebook, and she will punish yooou! (no joke at all here, folks)

I bet the album will be released on Christmas and everything is just a strategy for it.

Nah, all staff on OCR take off for Christmas (except Dave, he never takes off. Ever,)

It's because DKC3 has a Christmas atmosphere, IMO.

He's got a point... this is the only time of the year we can depend on OCR presents :-D

Hmmm, you know, that's not a half bad idea. If it really pushes that late, releasing within a week or two of Christmas (or at least on Christmas vacation) might actually be a viable idea. Would be pretty cool if it worked out that way :-)

This project so big it will take 2 years to evaluate

Definitely looking forward to this at Christmas 2013 though

Hang on. If ARMed and DANGerous were to be released around December 20, 2011 as JaDE aRaN HaRuNo planned, would you be allowed to release this in that same month?

These won't even be finish evaluated by then.

Just sayin, I've seen small projects take a few months, and this one is like 5x bigger -- MMX, DKC3, Wild Arms

Kindly stop making posts like this, you have no idea what you're talking about and I'd rather you stop spreading hearsay/conjecture when you're not even on the project staff. I don't know how long the evaluation phase will take or when we'll be able to release, and I'm the director AND OCR staff. You are neither of these things.

You may very well be right in the end, but posting your mildly-educated guesses is just building up expectations without a lot of foundation to them... and that's my job!

Yeah, you've got a point -- it IS a staff album after all :-P

That may not be what you meant but that's how it came across to me anyway... I would concede and agree with you that I'm only mildly educated when it comes to this, but staff was telling me half a year ago to not even expect a release until 2012. If it's a whole different set of standards for a staff album then I stand corrected. :whatevaa:

I know what you're implying here, and for the record, lemme state that this project is not a staff project in the sense that staff uses it in. This has gone through all the normal channels; I submitted it for approval in the beginning, it's going to have to go through evaluation like every other project and it'll be on a waiting list just like every other project. We're not going to jump the queue and it's not going to get special treatment, like you rudely stated over AIM. I find that kind of insulting.

It can't be an OCR project without at least SOME sort of drama. Like a Christening. :J

If the album had already been released, all this drama wouldn't be happening. This has become a public health issue.
