THE TRAILER FOR AROUND THE WORLD IS OUT! ALBUM RELEASE SOON! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jb677m3C91Y)

Welcome to Around the World, the Super Dodge Ball remix project. This site project idea was created my myself and maintained by KyleJCrb and myself.

Super Dodge Ball, developed by Technos Japan and released in the US by Sony Imagesoft, is one of my personal favorite NES games. Choosing the right teams, players, and power throws to win in the two-players mode was always fun, and I have many memories involving my brother and myself hitting each other with virtual dodge balls.

The music in this game, composed by the talented Kazuo Sawa (also the composer of Double Dragon, River City Ransom, and others), is a personal favorite video game soundtrack of mine, especially in the single-player mode. Each theme, from the catchy rifts of Team England to the epic, climatic tune of Team Shadow, brings something new to the game and adds to the excitement. I want to recapture that excitement with this remix project.

In addition, I'm looking for a general overall theme for Around the World. The game featured a very ethnic feeling which was mirrored in Sawa's soundtrack. I want the artists to recreate the tracks using ethnical flavor as the artist sees fit.

Ok. I'm not sure how to do that, but a trip to Google should help.

Ok, I went through Google and found a great NEFe of the soundtrack. This is exactly what I need.

I'll start thinking more about this project after the Kirby and DOOM projects finish up. In the meantime, I'm gonna listen to the Team England track and think of the awesome remix that could come from it.

If anyone wants to use this thread to throw around ideas or express interest in this project, go right ahead.

By the way, here's the nsfe link.

Fools. USSR is the best song. And dude, I hope you don't give up on this idea. The entire Super Dodge Ball soundtrack is one of the finest on the NES, and it deserves a full makeover. Good luck!

This man speaks the truth. If I find the time I can attempt [poorly] to guitar up the USSR track. [I'm in the midst of learning how to mix and shit]

For my project, I want each song to have a distinctive style. For USSR, I really want it done in the style of a traditional Russian dance. Use guitars if you want, but make it sound Russian.

That's my idea for the project right now. I want the country themes to sound like the style of music in that country. Pop or rap for the All-Stars, british rock & roll for England, a Hindu music style for India, and so on.

I just want to know if there's any interest in this project if I put it together.

Right. If all of the other remixers are working on other projects, then who would work on this one?

Like I said earlier, I'll either make a thread (or bump this one if it's still alive) about this project probably after both the DOOM and Kirby projects are released.

Ah, that's a cool idea. I doubt I'd be able to pull off the Russian theme as I'm struggling just making styles of music that I am familiar with. Good luck with the project though, SDB really deserves some remixes.

Thanks for the bump...I guess...yutz.

Well, since this got bumped, I guess I'll continue with my idea. I've thought about this, and I think that I won't go with that "song theme" idea. I wouldn't want to limit the creativity of the remixers, especially with this somewhat difficult source material.

I'm also thinking about starting the project a little earlier than I planned, seeing as how the Kirby and DOOM projects are nearly done anyway.

Edit - front page edited with info.

'Nother Edit - I've decided to formally launch stage two of the Super Dodge Ball ReMix Project in June. If not on the first (I may still be on vacation then), then shortly after I return. Between then and now, I still encourage artists to send me a private message or bump the thread if they want to express interest. I've also advertised this project at the Minibosses and OneUp Studios forums, so I hope to get people from all over the remixing community to take part in this.

I just told you this in my reply, but I'm telling everybody else.

I want an OCR-quality project here. I mean no offense to Ricter or any of the remixers on his project, and I apologize if I do, but I don't want my project to become another Hedgehog Heaven. And the last thing I want is another failed project like StarFox or any of the others in the past. If you're serious about this project, then you better give 110% on whatever track or tracks the artists choose.

EazyP: you can have the Team All-Stars (USA) track, but you better be ready to compete with whoever else might pick it. Go ahead and work on a WIP now, if you want.

Argitoth
05-17-2005, 02:10 PM
USSR track should be the flippin awesomest trance or dance mix ever. I'm thinking of doing the indian theme (unless we don't get to choose what we remix or if we first have to qualify for the project?) in a DnB style. That would be kool I think.

Edit: Yeah and include some nice ethnic drums for the DnB

Murmeli Walan
05-17-2005, 04:46 PM
(unless we don't get to choose what we remix or if we first have to qualify for the project?)

The artists can pick whatever track they want to. Later on, we'll have all the artists do a peer vote on what tracks will be included.

Also, nobody needs to "qualify" for the project. Just pick a track and make a WIP.

One more thing to announce: I will start stage two of the project on June 5th. Then, I will announce the tracks, who's already doing what (EazyP doing All-Stars, etc.), and hopefully this will get off the ground.

Edit: I lied. One other thing to announce: I've got zyko as a maybe right now.

How many songs are there in this project? (Approximately if you don't have a hard number.)

There are 19 tracks, but that includes short tunes like Match Start, Win Match, Lose Match, etc.

It only leaves about 13-15 remixable songs. If there are more people who want to get onto the project, I just may expand it to include another Technos sports game, Nintendo World Cup.

That's what I've been doing with the Tales project. Seems to be working. ;) It works, so long as you aren't all like "OMG BE ON THIS PROJECT NOW OR I KILL U!111" When I've gotten everyone that I'm interested in being on the Tales project, then I'll be making a thread about it here.

On a more related note, good luck, Walan! This should be one of the most creative remix projects yet, if it does indeed come to full fruition.

Cool idea, I just wanna show my support. I especially like the idea of doing certain tracks in a certain style, like doing British style rock for the Team England's song. I could totally picture a beatles style rendition of it.

Oh and by the by...
I'm not much of a mixer but I rap a lot. (I'm talking to you USA\All Stars remixer) For a sampling of me (albeit comedic) just look at what I did for the Duckhunt: ROFL project.

I love Duckbreaka. Believe me, I'd love for you to lend your vocals for this project.

And Kyle, I suppose I do have to be a little aggressive if I want more people to be in my project. I'll ask around.

And regarding Nintendo World Cup, I think that I'll let that idea go. There aren't alot of tracks, but I think that will improve the quality of each track used.

Murmeli Walan
05-19-2005, 11:34 AM
Ok, I've decided finally to drop Nintendo World Cup soccer for a number of reasons:

1. There are alot of other remix projects in progress right now, and apparently there are plenty more on the way. From what I've heard, Kyle's doing a project, and there's an Earthbound project being formed as well. This project won't have many tracks (about 4 or 5 tracks less than RotC), and a small project would be better for me right now than something like Shael's 50-track SSF2 project.

2. This project is about my love for Super Dodge Ball and it's music, and nothing else. Having another game wouldn't make the project as special to me. I wouldn't put much effort into a project I didn't care about.

3. I don't like Nintendo World Cup. I can't beat the first team, and I don't know how to do a power kick. Forget that game.

Wow, I don't know who to contact who isn't in a remix project right now. :?:

All this topic reminds me of is that virt did some Super Dodge Ball stuff a while back. He was planning a medley of the whole thing, but only ever finished U.S. All Stars and England (to my knowledge). I'd post the links but I don't remember them, and I don't think he wanted them publicized anyway. Which is too bad, because the US theme was arranged totally rockout guitar/drums orgyfest.

Well, don't forget that you can use the WIP forum, VGMix, or this thread to get feedback on your song. Don't give up yet.

Also, I'll be leaving to go on vacation on Saturday, and I'll be gone for one week. I'm going to do one of two things:

B: put the thread on pause, but ask people to bump it periodically.

whoa, I just now noticed this thread. I made a Super Dodgeball remix over 3 years ago that never got submitted (of Team Shadow, it was posted on the old vgmix.com).

It was a rap song that I wrote lyrics to, but I had only started recording it (and some other guys were going to collab on it also).

The file is lost and I probably don't have time to enter this project, however. too bad.

This will be my last post before I leave for my vacation (and I promise pictures when I get back).

If anyone reading this wants to go ahead and PM or ask other artists if they want to be a part of this project, feel free. Just so you know, analoq and CarboHydroM said no, and I got no response from Dennis. I'd love to see at least two or three more people sign up when I return.

After I get back, I'll really get serious about the project. Up until now, I've just been kinda getting the idea of the project out there, but I'll really be more aggressive.

it's up in the WIP section here on OCR also, so be sure to go there and read my comments on the mix... it's only very early days, so the way it sounds now isn't a guarantee that it'll sound anything like this in the end. Also, I just heard the VGDJ blurb on the project, and I'm pumped. Just to clear things up, I still want the "ethnic" sound that Rayza mentioned, but I am letting some freedom from the remixers. Do what you want, but don't stray too far.

On that note... the Team USSR mix is almost complete... Ola is gonna re-record the guitars soon, and i've got an ending figured out... the track goes for 4:20... i've got an ending i like, and i just got a few more things to add before i post an updated WIP... i'm having trouble with the vox- i can get anything that sounds clearer than what is already there (i got a somewhat average vocoder, me thinks)... apparently, Emperor said that he showed some of his Russian mates the track, and they understood the lyrics perfectly, so i'm gonna have to go with that... i got it sounding ok though, so that's all good :D

As soon as Ola does the new guitar lines, the only thing left to do after that is eq work, if any needs to be done at all... so it'll most likely be finished within the next week. Which i'm thankful for... i've spent so much time on this mix... i'll be glad to have it finished and ready to go:D

Wow, just noticed this.

I'm thinking of picking up a track, but, only after I finish up a few other projects. I'm listening to the tracks now.

EDIT: My involvement is PENDING. I'm still not sure I'll have time, but, I'd like to try team India (track 7). I'm gonna ask around for interest too. I'll keep ya'll posted.

EDIT #2: Yeah, put me down for team india. I'm in. I kinda plan on doing an Oceans 11/Italian Job/The bourne Identity kinda film style song. The jazzy ones. I'll get started pretty soon, just gonna finish up a few other things.

Not cool.. NSFe doesn't work with Meridian Advance, it seems.
I'll try whatever plugin I use with winamp, but while I'm doing that, I might as well throw this out:

How do I open NSFe?

[EDIT: Nosefart didn't work either. Maybe I'll just look for a ROM. I hope I can listen to this.. I'd really like to help out with this and I think I can.]

This time I've added another guitartrack to the previous one so IT sound very powerfull

Finally played through the game, heard the whole soundtrack. Excellent stuff on both ends.

I'm thinking of doing either All-Stars or Iceland. I have no idea how I would approach All-Stars given the theme of the project, so I'll probably take Iceland, which might be better suited for one of my ambient (http://vgmix.com/song_view.php?song_id=4244) remixes (http://vgmix.com/song_view.php?song_id=4504).
So that's what I've narrowed it down to.. if anyone has a suggestion or problem as to my choice I'd be glad to hear them.
More on that later.

Okay, I've played through again, and I've decided.
I will do an ambient remix of Team Iceland's bgm.

Now I need to track down an NSF (that I can open =P) to help me in the transposing process. Once I have that (which should give me time to work on some other songs), I will begin working on my Iceland mix.

Yes, but they're NSFe. I need plain old NSF. I found a winamp plugin that opens NSFe but I don't know how to rip to audio with NotSo Fatso. It has a very odd interface..

Thanks anyway!

Dimmignatt

I don't know how to rip to audio with NotSo Fatso.

Use the Direct writer output (i think it's called that) in winamp and make a Wav out of it.. Very simple :)
You could also turn off some channels in NotSo Fatso so you can rip just one channel, perfect for taking out just one thing that is hard to hear with everything else going on at the same time.

I am changing this post cause I quickly changed my mind. Sorry! Dimmignatt has got it covered too nicely to interfere. I will consider doing an unclaimed song.

Originally posted:
I have recently finished a remix and I have been considering remixing the "team shadow" theme even before ever seeing that this project existed. I know Dimmignatt is signed on to do that song. I imagine his skills are passed my own but I would really like to take a stab at that song. If you decide it is good enough then add it, if not, then don't. So you can sign me on for making a version of the Phantom team (Team Shadow) theme. I own the game in the old NES cartridge format and I play it on the console with a friend of mine on occasion. I love the game. Always have.

Perhaps you need some proof of my skills? I can't say I am the best out there. My Faxanadu remix found on my site is reflective of my current skill level. You can get it off my site:

Ok, in the next few days, I'll be sending PMs to the people on my maybe list about their involvement in the project.

I think the problem here is the fact that unlike every other remix project going on currently, Super Dodge Ball is the only project that centers around an underrated soundtrack. I'm not knocking the other projects at all (far from it), but it's just that they all have soundtracks from popular and well-known games (Super Metroid, Sonic 2 and 3, the Tales games. Heck, the Kirby's Superstar project gained 20 pages in the time it took this project to get 5.)

Sorry if I sound bitter or anything. I just know that this project will go far with persistence.

I'm not so sure that's the case. Yes, plenty of remixers have told me that they're too busy or are just too burnt out to help. But everyone I asked about the project has told me that they heard a great soundtrack. If fact, Mazedude told me this in a PM:

However, it is extremely intricate original music, and thus very difficult to remix. One key thing about remixing is that you want the mix to be atleast as good as the original, and if the originals are already fast, crazy, and kickass... it's one helluva task.

People are giving the soundtrack time, which makes me happy. If anything, I'm introducing a great soundtrack to a bunch of people.

Yeah, thanks for posting that nsf. Sometimes I keep saying I'm going to do something, and then never get it done (why else didn't you think BEERseven never got finished?).

Thanks again.
WALAN EARNS 2000 POINT BONUS AND THE CONTINUE FOR TO BRING UP BEER!!
Whatever happened to those contests anyway?

And hey, don't worry about it.. I never get things done sometimes too.

Also, I'm interested in hearing the answer to PNB's question.. it shouldn't affect me that much, as ambient just seems like it would fit well for a place that's supposed to be cold. At any rate, I have no idea what real Icelandic music sounds like, so my mix would probably just end up being mashed with vocals from some Bjork song.
Not that that's a bad idea, mind you.

What happened to BEERmix? After I got tired with it, it evolved into the EAR Mix contests. EAR's gone as well, but now you can get your joke mix fix over at OverLooked ReMiX (http://olremix.paletteswap.com/). :D

To answer PNB's question (I meant to last night, but I got sidetracked), yes, I still want to go with my original idea to stay close to that countries' music.

Take another listen to Robbie's USSR mix. He used some Russian-like orchestration and instruments, but he also added his own twist with the eurodance feel and Dimmignatt's guitar. The same thing goes with Harmony's Kenya WIP (You guys haven't heard it yet.) He's going for African tribal chants over his mix, along with guitar and other synths. That's what I'm shooting for: ethnic feel, but with the remixer's own touches and variations.

Ohhh fuck.. Am I on deep water now ?? I meant with my Shadow theme remix ?? well maybe not.. Tried to do something evil and überheavy.. But You'll be the judge of that !!

Ah, I knew I should've elaborated on that.

Because Team Shadow, Vs. Play, Bean Ball, Title Screen, and etc. don't belong to any one country, just go with whatever style the remixer wants.

Don't worry, you're doing just fine.

I would record the drums myself but I don't have any mics for my drums and I can't afford it either. So this will have to do for the time being.

You should find somebody who makes good drums to colab with.

Another suggestion?

See if you can find some good samples of thunder and thunderstorms. The final match in the game took place with flashes of lightening all around, and I want to see if it could be pulled off well in this track.

Well, I've been through about 10 crappy starts on Team India now, and, still have nothing to show.

Soccer season is about to start, which means, I'll have no time on top of other projects and so forth.

I'm really sorry to do this, but, I have to drop this project. Sorry everyone, I know this project needs support, but, I cant give mine at the moment.

All my apologies.

Ack, that makes you the second person to drop Team India. Oh well. Thanks for giving it a shot, though.

We do need some more remixers involved in the project. Lots of people have said yes, but there hasn't been too much musical output yet.

Please, join us if you can.

Are you serious that there is no one remixing the all-star stage? I definitely wanna give it a go if you qualify me to this grand and noble project.

When is the deadline for WIP's or finals? I'd like to finish my piece before school starts (2 days, yeah right) but I'd like to have at least a submission date so I know ahead of time. This is something I'd really like to be part of so if you could just let me know s soon as possible, that'd be great.

I tried getting some attention from the PRC but that didn't seem to work. You guys need to find a way to get more people interested so this thing doesn't fall flat.

Until next time, or until I put up my next update on my mix.
