Thanks a ton diotrans. I apologize to all for my consistent absence since my wedding early Sept. I just don't have the time I thought I would to be around here regularly at all, and it isn't fair to you all.
I am pumped diotrans is taking over!
I think it might be in everyones best interest to have a new thread started, as diotrans suggested.
Maybe I'll see you guys at the viewing party! Peace!

BTW Biznut, I'd like to point out that your sig links to the sig image itself. I dunno, it might be useful if your sig linked to this thread instead.

I have an idea for one... could take a while though...

What makes compos interesting are the limitations one works with. Most often, you are limited by time and you have to do your best to come up with something cool in a short amount of time.
One third of a year, to me, seems like too long to make things interesting. I doubt the production time for Thriller was much longer than four months.
But even though I think this should've been pushed back more, I am glad to see it and am looking forward to hopefully another great batch of entries.
cheers.

The only solid idea for a video I have is for a remix I have submitted that hasn't even been judged yet... so basically, I have intent, but absolutely no ideas. I will think about it though. I want to do something completely different from my last video.
Thanks Biznut for organizing this again!! The last one was a blast, and I have a feeling we're going to have even more entries and awesomeness this time around. Yay!

When it comes to making something relatively long and challenging as a hobby that may require time coordination between multiple participants, all of whom are managing other (more important and immediate) obligations, four months is not as long as it sounds. You cite the music video for Thriller, but you are ignoring the monetary incentive behind its production for all parties involved... surely I'll make space for something if it sustains my livelihood. And we're not including editing.... lol.
I'll see what I can do for this one - hopefully I can start shooting on the weekends. And if I move as I plan, shooting this video will require a 70+ mile commute each day of filming (hurray for 4 months).
analoq
04-20-2010, 05:41 AM
I'm well aware of the difficulties in coordinating amateur projects. I use the Thriller example without any ignorance; the point is that no one is expecting or attempting a Thriller. Compo veterans understand how limitations can and do encourage creativity.
The previous compo ran for 2 months and I don't think anyone would say we failed to get a creative set of entries. I just want to dispel any expectations that by doubling the running time we're going to double the quantity or quality of offerings.

Well, considering what I have seen in compos at OCR, and I guess from people in general, procrastination will always be a major factor.
I can't speak for Kaleb on this one but I agree, four months would not necessarily result in better/more entries... but I think announcing it early will help attract more people, many of whom will express intent and not follow through, but surely we'll see new talent this time. At least this will dispel some of the "wait, when did this happen and how did I miss out on it?" confusion.

I have 3 other unfinished videos that I want to finish and post on teh internets before I start on this one. And I'll be busy with other things for a couple months before I start working on any of those. 4 months is perfect for me ^__^

Hey, I'm making something pretty unique... this should go well...
diotrans
04-20-2010, 06:06 PM
I agree that four months gives us more time to promote the MVC and get more participants. I also agree that there is something to be said for the challenge of having a short deadline to work with. But I guess as long as we intend to continue having the MVCs, people can really start working on music videos whenever since there isn't a theme or anything. So for instance Biznut could have announced that the challenge will be from the end of June to the end of August, but I feel like that would have been functionally the same. Except I guess we would be on the honor system not to start working on our videos, but then would there be any benefit to putting off when we can start? I feel like that would just crush people's momentum if they are already coming up with ideas and having the inspiration to work on them now.
Anyway, just my thoughts. I don't know what the best solution is.
analoq
04-21-2010, 12:11 AM
Nor do I claim to know what the best solution is. My prediction in the previous compo was we'd get a half-dozen entries... and we got a half-dozen entries. Good guess - or maybe I've just been around long enough to know what to expect.
I do not denigrate the potential benefits of a longer compo period. What I'm getting at is for every potential benefit there is a potential risk: You're not just giving participants more time to work on their entry, you're giving them more time to lose interest in it. You're not just giving people more time to become aware of the compo, you're giving them more time to forget about it.
There's no 'correct' deadline; there are always pros and cons. However there's often a 'sweet spot' and I simply don't feel 4 months is it. What of it? Well nothing, really. This conversation is purely academic... but I guess we've got time for it (:
cheers.

I agree that people could lose interest/forget about the competition more easily with this great a period of time, but even the 2 and a halfish months we alotted last time managed to leave some people upset that time was short, they didn't know about it soon enough.
...or perhaps those were just procrastinators pinning the blame on something else *cough-friendlyHunter-cough*
I can only assume that the best way to encourage maximum output of entries is to:
a) Keep the thread alive and interesting. (Teaser screen caps? Viewing party plans? Concepts? Art? Example videos of something you want to achieve? Collabs?)
b) Remind the world that even small, quick, silly submissions still provide a welcome change of pace... and even an hour of fiddling around with setting footage to an OCRemix or shooting video of your room is welcome.
Hey, I'm making something pretty unique... this should go well...

A QUICK NOTE TO THOSE LOOKING FOR IDEAS
I highly recommend putting yourself in a situation where you're able to listen to mass amounts of ocremixes on your ipod or other portable music device... whether it's on the way to work, at the gym, walking to/from school, where ever; and just think about what would go with the music.
I've been doing this nearly daily for a while now and I easily have 8 or 9 solid video concepts. Seriously. I'm not intending to put anyone down for a lack of creativity but I'm in a situation where my biggest problem is choosing which ONE I want to do.
The Biznut
04-22-2010, 05:11 PM
I agree with what analoq says, there is always an upside and downside to any time. I also feel that it could have been announced later without too much of a negative effect. I personally won't be doing anything with my video for a while.
When I think about this event, I always think about the viewing party. It was a great time last time, and I really think that is the most important part of the event. In a lot of ways, you don't even need to announce anything else, just that there is a viewing party on such and such a date, and if you have a video made in time, people will watch it. I'm not concerned about how long people take to make it, which is why personally I feel that the Music Video Challenge doesn't really require a set start time.
analoq does bring up a point that I do agree with; some people will probably lose interest over 4 months. I agree. LAOS has some good suggestions to help keep things alive. Even if people lose interest, there will still be those who don't. For them, 4 months is probably awesome. I think that come Viewing Party time, everyone will get back into it.
I plan on being at Magfest this year, I would love to run MVC3 from Sept until then and have an in house viewing party there. I plan on doing whatever I need to to make that happen. That would be another 4 month period. If this time seems to work out, and the next one does too (Which is should, simply because its MAG fest. If DoD gets 20+ entries for the MAG edition, the MVC should be larger too) then I think I will just host a viewing party triannually, announce right away. If we can get into a natural rhythm then it may require less direct effort each time around.
Those are my thoughts anyway. They extend a bit down the road, but I don't apologize for that, I'd like to see this event stick around, it's fun!

Ahh such a good idea. I'll have to do this soon.
With all this time to work on the video, I'm tempted to do something more elaborate involving costume and set designs and stuff. And having actual people appear in the video, maybe even have them acting!

You can't not-procrastinate everything :<
But yeah, I wanted to either do a really good job, or none at all. At this point I'm still mentally storyboarding exactly what happens at exactly which points in the song - it's hard because I have to listen to the song to find out whether or not the "choreography" in my head will work (and then rework it if it doesn't), but I'm happy to say stuff is falling into place.

Interesting editing contrast between the performers: the singer's verses have frequent cuts while the rapper's verses are done in single (Steadicam) shots. Also apt choreography when the singer's arms go down on "No valley too deep" and come up on "No mountain too high". I particularly enjoyed the rapper's finger wagging on "No no no no..." My remix is on the panel right now. I think if it passes, I want to make a music video for it. I really had my heart set on that remix since obviously I have some investment in the story of the song already. If it does pass, it's highly unlikely to be posted by the August deadline for this challenge, so I would probably just wait until the next challenge to enter it (though I guess that would mean sitting on it for months and not showing it to anybody... hmm). Anyway that was my thinking.
Yes, I could do a different video now and do the one for my remix later, but I don't know, I just had my heart set on that one. I had a lot of other ideas, but nothing that really screamed out to me and inspired me... that would also be feasible given my means. I have tons of ideas for totally impractical videos .)

I've determined that the concept I had in mind before is still good, and it could be achieved with a minimal budget if I wanted to, but it just isn't coming together for me like I wanted at the moment. Certain people, and now lost time is a factor too...
So I'm picking through a few new ideas, one of which came to me last night. In the end, if I wrap one up effectively and early I might just shoot for two entries this next competition and leave my impressive blockbuster stuff for round 3. Sound good?

Ok I'm sorry but those greedy corporate bastards decided to block the video because I did not have rights to the song. So I had to replace the audio with some other random song for it to a least be viewable. This has screwed over all my hard work and I know noone will be bothered playing the audio which can be listened to for free from a single google search, with the video. But it's the best i can do, enjoy seeing the video, but since it's a music video you will need to listen to the song with it for it to make sense.
I guess this goes to show why I should stick to OCremixes.

Damn it.
Well... I might have to start from scratch again. After coming out with a story, editing a rough storyboard, casting interested people, and finalizing 8 separate locations and shooting dates, I've decided to drop that whole project.
If I was smart and was shooting when the project STARTED I could get it done in time no problem. But using the remaining time with the project I had in mind I needed all 8 of those shoots.
Then weather, other people not showing, and work (taking fully half of those days away) hit me all at once.
I'm now likely to shoot something entirely different either completely indoors, or something animated.

I have 3 other unfinished videos that I want to finish and post on teh internets before I start on this one. And I'll be busy with other things for a couple months before I start working on any of those. 4 months is perfect for me ^__^
Oh how time flies. So far I've finished about 80-90% of each of those three videos, and a teaser trailer for the videos, but have yet to fully finish a single one of the three (No worries, it's all going according to plan). Haven't started the music video yet though... can't say if I'll have enough time to finish or not :\
Hmm, my post-count rank seems to have changed to "Simon Belmont". How impeccably fitting (http://ocremix.org/quicksearch/remix/?qs_query=simon)....
[Edit]
Correction: I actually finished the first of the three videos, but the third one became too epic and so a forth video was born. So yeah.

Lol why have so many videos almost finished? waiting on certain probs or people are you?
Nope. Long story short: I was making the script and audio for a 2-video series (I do all the audio first, it's just easier that way), and then it turned into 3 videos, and then 4. With the audio for all 4 mostly complete, I started and finished the video editing for the first one, released it, and decided the video editing program I was using sucked. Then I got a 30-day trail of Sony Vegas and finished video editing for the 2nd 3rd and 4th, and the trial just ended so that's where I'm at now. All that's left is some "special effects" magic to be done for all 3.

So speaking of work dominating my life... it's kind of been worth it in some ways.
I may not have a video ready to shoot (it was kind of embarassing inviting a whole lot of people to the shooting only to have to tell them a few days later I had to drop the project) but I AM surrounded by real film at the moment.
As we speak I'm typing this from my restaurant which is closed down because
SARAH SILVERMAN, MICHELLE WILLIAMS, and SETH ROGEN will be shooting a scene here for Sarah Polley's Waltz With Me.
If anyone sees it, and sees Seth and Michelle eating a guacamole or a mango ceviche; I made it. 8)

You could make it deliberately over-the-top cheesy, to ensure that any laughing that people will do will be with you and not at you
BTW people, my remix that I wanted to make a video of got its 4th YES, so I guess that means I should start storyboarding. We're definitely doing another one of these after this one? Hey everyone, my sincere apologies for the delayed response. I am getting married in a week and have not been online hardly at all, and only for brief moments. I should have checked in here, I had entirely forgot about this for the last week due to the sheer amounts of other stuff that need to be done. Moving, wedding planning, etc.
Enough excuses.
I would like to stick with the viewing party date and time. Even if we only have a few entries, that is okay.
Those who are not quite done yet have two options.
1. HUSTLE
2. Have a secondary viewing party a week or two down the road, for those who want to finish up. Whether this happens or not will be determined in IRC tomorrow.
Those who have finished will not be forced to wait, and even if you are not done, I encourage you to come appreciate their work! I'm stoked to see your vids, I will BE there, with friends gathered around my lappy.

1. I am going to suggest sometime 2 weeks from now for the second viewing party.
2. I am going to ask someone else to coordinate it, as I will probably not be online again until 2 weeks from now when my honeymoon is over.
So basically figure out when you all would want to do a second one. Someone will step up and organize it. If it hasn't happened by the time my honeymoon is over, I'll chime in and organize it sometime shortly after. If next week works best, we can do that. If 3 weeks works best, we can do that. I don't think it should be more than a month from now though.

Hello OCR Music Video Makers and Fans!!!
So I'd like to organize a OCRMVC2.1 Viewing Party. I'm going to make a new thread, but before I do that, I need to know the following:
1. Who has FINISHED a music video?
2a. Who has not finished a music video yet, but has one in progress and/or will be able to finish one within the next couple of weeks?
2b. If you intend to finish a video soon, how much time do you need? (Be reasonable -- if it's going to take you a couple of months, it's probably best to save it for OCRMVC3.)
3. Who intends to attend the viewing party, whether or not they've done a video?
4. The viewing party for the first MVC was on a Sunday at 9 EST iirc. Does that time work for you, or does anybody have any major conflicts with this?
Discuss!

1. Who has FINISHED a music video?
Not me.
2a. Who has not finished a music video yet, but has one in progress and/or will be able to finish one within the next couple of weeks?
I can do one in 3 weeks no matter what. This doesn't have to be emmy quality stuff here. I'll just spend an afternoon filming stuff, and piece it together. 2 hour job. Done. Then suddenly we have 4 more minutes of a viewing party. Just need to find that 2 hours.
2b. If you intend to finish a video soon, how much time do you need? (Be reasonable -- if it's going to take you a couple of months, it's probably best to save it for OCRMVC3.)
I will have a better one for OCRMV3 as well.
3. Who intends to attend the viewing party, whether or not they've done a video?
I may be banned from ETG but I think I can still find a way.
4. The viewing party for the first MVC was on a Sunday at 9 EST iirc. Does that time work for you, or does anybody have any major conflicts with this?
Sunday is still my best day and that time seems pretty agreeable in general. I especially like it.

I was hoping to get a little more response than this ^_^; But 2 videos is still very cool. LAOS, do you think there's still a good chance you could do a video if it were 2 weeks instead of 3? I ask because 3 weeks from now on Sunday is Halloween and I don't know if that might not be a good day for some people. Then again, most parties are probably on Friday and Saturday nights, so unless any of our viewing party participants are planning to go out trick-or-treating, maybe it won't be an issue.

Thank you LAOS for being flexible and good luck, hope you can get something ready by then. Heck, I'll see if I can scrape something together by then, too. I had some ideas for some videos that might not take all that long to do.

What guidelines are there that aren't just the deadline and general youtube guidelines? ie: no nudity etc...
Also; I am definitely in. Even if it winds up being really crappy and half as good as what I have in my head I should still have one done within a week tops. I got about half done filming today. It will be extremely light-hearted, it might even be cuter than your last vid diotrans.

That's a good question. ^_^; I thought we had a page with the guidelines that we'd all discussed, e.g. that any officially posted OCReMix or remix from an official OCR project was valid, follow YouTube guidelines as you mentioned, credit the remixer and original composer and it's good to contact the remixer if you can to make sure they're cool with the video, etc.
But it is fairly straightforward and there probably wouldn't be a lot of confusion over what to do, and if there is people can just ask in the forum too.

So I'm making sure to go on a quick little road trip this coming Sunday for filming. I lobbied to make sure the restaurant wouldn't open for THIS Sunday the 17th and I got my wish. As for the NEXT Sunday, the 24th, I'm stuck there. If I'm cooking I'll try to be on IRC on my phone to join you guys... otherwise it looks like I'm missing out on the viewing party action again.
Monkey flips.

Sweet. Good to hear chernabogue. It's down to one day, tomorrow, for me. I wound up having to stay at work all day yesterday and I'm slammed the rest of the week. Also, I'll try for the irc viewing party but once again (I know, I'm predictable) I'll be at work, so it's kinda doubtful.
Cheers. Good to hear there will be multiple videos again. That's significantly more fun to watch.

Hey Less Ashamed. I was the only one with a video at the 1st viewing party, but I would like to participate in the second and show it again and get feedback from everyone here.
