Hey, just so you all know, both pixietricks and myself have a lot of real life stuff to attend to over the next few days and so it doesn't look like we're going have a show for you this week. However, we'll be back on track next week - thanks for your support! :D

VGDJ is down to 18th now, from 5th overall. At least it's still first in the music category.

*waits patiently for next weeks episode*

Yeah, I figured that would happen. Without a new show, our listeners didn't get the usual voting reminder. That's okay; we're still doing better than ever! Usually VGDJ is somewhere in the 30's or 40's on podcast alley. I'm still astonished at how far we've come.

Not necesarilly...

Podcasty Alley counts accumulated votes for that month, right? Remember we can--or are supposed to "--only vote once a month. I just think all of VGDJ's came in like the first 2 days. We did have a big campaign to vote ASAP...

Well, obviously that has to do with it, but we usually get more votes trickling in. Some people don't listen weekly, forget to vote because they're busy with other stuff, or are hearing the show for the first time. ^_~

Another neat show, I am sure :) There's definitely more content than previously stated, and so I'm sure to cast in my much delayed vote in the matter.
BTW Cyan, Animal Crossing is on the GameCube. If I was referring to Wild World on the DS (which indeed had most of K.K.'s songs transferred towards said platform), I'd be showing a top screen AND a touch screen in the same topic. :P

EDIT: Abadoss, if you see this... What in the world are you talking about in that voicemail of yours? We roll the die once for each show. Each of us chooses one mix we wanna hear. There are six possibilities. 2/6 = 1/3 = 0.3333333333... Maybe that whole thing was an elaborate joke, but it kinda sounded like you were serious about your math? :P

to clear something up:

I used to go under the name of V_gasm, which was chosen because of a minimum 4 letter nickname requirement. Due to lameness, I decided to change my name to my prefered 'V' and to fill up the space i put in underscores as they appear somewhat invisible. So its not 'V underscore x3', its just a simple 'V' (said 'Vee') and no longer V_gasm. Just had to clear that up

Dun da da dun dun dun dunnnnnnn! Presenting pixietricks' thousandth post on OCR...

VGDJ episode #041 (1st anniversary episode) has been released at WWW.VGDJ.NET (http://www.vgdj.net)!

We had a blast with you guys! Keep in mind that this show was recorded live with all our guests at the meetup, so there are a lot of wind noises etc. I think we pulled off the editing pretty well, considering the circumstances. ^_~ Anyway, here are the pics!

http://www.vgdj.net/anniversarymeet/46.jpg

btw, the reason the numbers are the way they are is because you have to factor in the combined possibility of the multiple rolls (aka every roll that you've done) into the equation. The only time you have a 1:6 chance with the die is on the first roll. After the first roll, you have to double the odds for each roll you make (1:12 / 1:24 / 1:48 / 1:96 / 1:192 / etc.). It's simple permutation...

btw, the reason the numbers are the way they are is because you have to factor in the combined possibility of the multiple rolls (aka every roll that you've done) into the equation. The only time you have a 1:6 chance with the die is on the first roll. After the first roll, you have to double the odds for each roll you make (1:12 / 1:24 / 1:48 / 1:96 / 1:192 / etc.). It's simple permutation...
But we only roll once per show! GAHHH, your math has nothing to do with the Russian ReMix Roulette!

Aside from the first show, each time you roll the die, it's not the first time you've rolled it. That's why you have to count all the other die rolls.

369 square km and we couldn't find a single arcade or music store that was open. :(

To be fair, we didn't cover the 369 square km.
I would have researched where to go, but I sort of figured the person organizing the meetup would know where to go. Our day was pretty packed anyway, the time we would have spent at the arcade/music store we spent waiting at the Olive Garden.

Drumultima is pronouncing the names exactly as Americans do, so he's not wrong but we seem to truncate the pronunciation to Brisbn and Melbn.

Oops, the background music list was mistakenly edited out - I just put it back in. However I didn't think to include the one used in the stinger (we usually have random music or none at all for that stuff). But in this case, I deliberately chose the song "Spit" by John Murphy, which was also used in Apple commercials for several years.

It's falling behind her head; that's the idea.
But as for the reverse DJP, I admit that was unintentional...

As for questions for the backstage dudes, here's a few suggestions that come to mind...

*How had composing video game music changed since the SNES/Genesis days (as I know Tommy Tallarico has done since)? Did/does technology impact how you approach your job?

*For Tommy: What motivated him to be such an avid supporter of Paul & Paul's project; what turned him on to it? What does he hope their film will accomplish for the community?

And of course the standard what are your influences, both inside the video game world and out?
Maybe follow-up with who they have respect for today.

Also, is it just me or do the American and Japanese video game industries seem to be diverging? The VGL show seems to represent the American side, but not the Japanese so much. It would be wonderful to get some outside opinions on this...

YO! We're back from VGL (posting at my dorm from 3AM, pixie is behind me and djp is nearly asleep on the floor.. good times). Earlier in the day we chilled with Darkesword and his buddies, as well as bustatunez, then for the show itself we met up with Merk and Atmaweapon and eventually Moguta and D-Lux (an unexpected surprise!) Anyway, the best part was that we not only got to hang out with all these big-name composers, but we got interviews with all of them. Amusingly enough, before we went to a hotel to relax and do a bunch of interviews, there was a "meet and greet" session with all of the people from the concert at a sort of panel, signing autographs.. as it turns out, djpretzel had a spot there! :D

Anyway, this is going to be a hell of a show. LOTS of editing to do and I'm the one that's going to be doing it, so it's going to take a little longer than normal. I expect to be done on Monday sometime, and it will probably be coordinated with a front page update by djp where he'll be spotlighting VGL and this special edition podcast episode.

Long story short, awesome concert, hooray for video game music, and check back Monday to hear the show. Goodnight!

VGDJ Episode 043: Video Games Live Edition has been released at www.vgdj.net !

It's finally done! We were sort of against the odds on this one, with me having to edit the show, pixietricks not having internet for most of the time, Pro Tools crashing, my main audio drive dying, etc.. but we really think you guys are gonna dig this one. There's too much cool stuff to describe. Ya'll just download and give it a listen.

Oh, and needless to say, vote for us this month (http://www.podcastalley.com/one_vote2.php?pod_id=4140) if you haven't already ;)

ps. A new batch of pictures is available from before, during, and after the show @ http://www.vgdj.net/album (page 5 and 6)

YESSSSS! Exclusive interviews with Michael Salvatori of the Halo games, Martin Leung- the video game pianist, Gerard Marino of God of War, Marcus Henderson (the lead guitarist for Guitar Hero 1 and 2!), Jack Wall of the Myst series and more, aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand Tommy Tallarico!!! DJP made this a front page feature. Hope that serves as an indication how huge this episode was. Enjoy, guys. ^_^

Amusingly enough, before we went to a hotel to relax and do a bunch of interviews, there was a "meet and greet" session with all of the people from the concert at a sort of panel, signing autographs.. as it turns out, djpretzel had a spot there! :D
Heh, I don't think it's a secret that Tommy Tallarico is a big OCR fan. :) I'm almost curious why he hasn't submitted a mix of his own yet...

That was one of the best things I've ever heard. History in the making. Everything important in one mp3.

58:54, what's the song playing? I know I've heard it before, but I have no idea why I'd delete it. It...is a remix right? Sounds like one. That'd be really strange if it was an original. I don't want to be wrong but it's possible.

That would actually be so cool. I would do it myself had there been a couple of things not holding me back right now :( but we'll see what happens.

Anyway, this is a method that I actually give all due credit to DistantJ. When I wanted to call onto VG Frequency for the first time, I mentioned it in the VGMix chatterbox and he pointed out Telediscount. He saw it as the way to be able to call his peers (was it his girlfriend?) from abroad. So I used that and followed the instructions to get onto the show the following Saturday... and many other Saturdays after that.

For VGDJ I took that method and just replaced the WMRE number with yours. So, if there's any Brits reading this, this is what you do:

* Dial the access number for calls to the United States - check here (http://www.telediscount.co.uk/accessnumbers.php#u) for the number, which sometimes changes once in a while.
* When it says "please enter the number you would like to call and finish by pressing the hash (#) button" you just type 00 and THEN the VGDJ number. In this case it's 001 800 990 VGDJ (8435 if you can't see any letters imprinted on your phone).
* If you hear the VGDJ intro music followed by our hosts speaking about the answering machine, you know you're at the right place.

And there we go. A viable method for British users to call to VGDJ. :)

While zircon undoubtedly deserves a zircmix, the more time that passes before that happens, the more entertaining the mix will become, as it will have more varied sound clips. I'd say give it a month or so longer. And then start asking.

I really enjoyed the Gerard Merino and Marcus Henderson interviews. They were just so laidback, and Gerard shares a lot of my views about the current direction of video games. Also, my favorite quote in the entire show:

I FINALLY had a chance to sit down and listen to the new show in its entirety, and it's just as awesome as I imagined it would be. All the interviews were really informative! I was really suprised what some of those people had to say about videogame music.

Personally, the highlight for me was when the composers more or less all said "OMG VG remixes are awesome/inspirational!" as opposed to "Stop putting drum loops over my songs you #$%$!"

Yeah, listening to the piece you can see how I got increasingly tired/desperate/cukoo as time went on, especially in part 3. The whole thing took much longer than I expected...
If you think this is crazy you should hear the first ever DJ mix I made in Traktor. I had my entire MP3 collection at my disposal and this grand vision; it was scary...

I'll be doing a 2nd version tomorrow or Thu. now that I actually have my sanity back. The whole reason I rushed it out is cause zircon said he'd do a remix too--and his would naturally be better. I feel like Sega during the Genesis days now. Blast Processing, biatch!!

BTW, notice how I pathetically try to compensate in the "Drop it Like It's Hot" section (pt 3) where the original was going "Snoooooooooooop!" Pixie: if you could provide me with a "ziirrrrrrrrrrrcoin!" sample or if any of you have advice on how to stretch out a sample without having it sound stuttery or choppy, it would be much appreciated...

I still think the part after "LET THERE BE REMIX" should be replaced with the Super Mario Super Show song.

Swing your arms, from side to side,
Come on it's time to go do the Mario,
Take one step,
and a then let's do the Mario altogether now!

(It's all from memory but yes... would be great!)
Hell yeah, now you're talkin'.
I think you mean to say...

YOU GOT IT!
IT'S THE MARIO!!

I kinda like the intro as is, only because of the SMW sound effects and it isn't a version we've heard a thousand times before. :)
But it might be nice to switch it up at least once...
If anyone has the file, email it to vgdjpodcast@gmail.com. (Less talk, more action!)

I wrote them out a page or two ago. They aaaarrrre:

VGDJ podcast!
.....................
It's not just old blips, bleeps, and bloops
Video game music and Fruityloops
We've got rock, jazz, orchestra too
VGDJ is for you!

(Not to pimp my project but...)

I just thought that everybody should see this, It is the OCR-DS skin http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j261/lancer130/OCR4Done.jpg
I made it during the past week, and seeing as how it has the VGDJ logo on it, why not post it here.
To buy it you just have to go here http://designerskins.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?page=D/PROD/CNDS/CNDS-CUST-TEMP and upload it to them and buy it and they mail it to you.

Yo guys, as the front page of vgdj.net says, this episode will be a bit delayed - there's quite a bit of material to be edited what with the concert that pixietricks went to. But don't worry, we'll have it out as soon as we can. :)

WTF?!?!

Hmm... what some kids will do for attention, I suppose... they sound like they can't be much older than ten, which would probably explain the repeated affinity for Raaw Battery...

This show was just pronunciation mayhem. "Peenist" is a classic one of course, but Mark Vera's "Ouija DJ" just took the cake for me. ;) BTW, that reminds me...when are you guys gonna let Larry guest host? We could call it "Oji DJ." :D

And did we finally hear a real live pixie "squee"? Very cute...reminds me of my sister. :)

The 8bit Genocide segment was interesting. I got a very different vibe from these guys than I do from OCR (probably because there were so many metalheads in one place :) ). It's almost as if the VG rock cover community is the yin to our yang. It would be cool if VG cover scene actually did become "the next punk" like they mentioned...as long as they don't become bitter when it becomes mainstream and start reminiscing about how "they were there when..." ;)

Hahaha, ouija DJ. And don't forget all the shnaboobula's. Indeed, it was a crazy show. When are we gonna "let" Larry guest host? All he has to do is ask! He never has, to my knowledge. But yeah, it would be a blast having him on the show. Perhaps if he makes it to zircon's birthday/my housewarming party this weekend, we could record with him in person. Eh eh?

I know exactly what you mean about the ying and yang. It was extremely refreshing hanging out with those guys, and their music was seriously awesome. I'm glad you enjoyed the feature. ^_^

Hehehehe, that was from q-pa's "zircoin" remix (http://digamejh.melankolly.com/online_storage/ZircoinRemix.mp3)! We had been talking in IRC about calling zircon "zircoin" for fun, so he made that from my original recording singing "zircoin" with the pitches from Mario. roffle.
