Your welcome. I'm a huge fan because you have one of the most beautiful singing voices I've ever heard. Quick question, when are you posting new music? I already downloaded everything from OCremix, Animeremix and your site and I'm just curious when I can get new amazing music. Anyway, I'm your number one fan and I am willing to fight to keep that title. (self appointed of course) So Goodnight. I'm just posting at this g-d forsaken hour because I have become an insomniac ever since I got new computer and high speed internet. Anyway, I'm done rambling now. Hope to hear back real soon!

Ok Pixie,
WTF.
ROFL. That's nothing. Brendan, afterwards, decided to walk around in his underwear.
Lol, he's not the one I'm worried about.
And what were YOU wearing? :P
My pajamas, of course. Only guys are silly enough to sleep in clothes. :P
Awwww, thanks, Ranael!
SPECIAL FEATURES = AWESOME :D
The last few shows have been amongst the very best. I don't think VGDJ's ever sounded more professional. Well done pixie and zircon.

Yea every show's gotta a new awesome feature. Keep it up (although special features won't be in every show)!
Finally...
If I'm gonna have my name attached to this, I want it to be good (http://digamejh.melankolly.com/online_storage/ZircoinRemix2.mp3).

I was gonna call into the line and say this, but I figure it doesn't warrant 30 seconds of air time, so..yeah.
Anyways, I agree with whoever. That little squeal of delight when pixie actually WON a die-roll. Adorable.
BUT anyways...I plan on winning m'self an SGX album, even though I ordered them earlier this week.

VGDJ Episode 046: The Liontamer Roars has been released, and is now available at www.vgdj.net! (http://www.vgdj.net)
We had an unexpected meetup @ pixie's place for my birthday, which made it on to this show, officially turning it into a Special Episode (tm)! Guests included djpretzel, Liontamer, D-Lux, Benzo, Ninja-san, GeoffreyTaucer (who is still here as I type this), Moguta, TristorTrucido and MythrilNazgul. We hope you guys enjoy this one, as we sure had some fun making it :)

Yep, we sounded as shitty as I expected we would. Also, don't blame you for editing out the JP-rapping.
Also, just so you can match voices to faces: Snoop was responsible for "WTF!" and "YOUR MUM!" during the singing, as well as that bit about pixie's hooters; Dr Wily was responsible for "Well EXCuuuuuuuuuuuuuuse me, princess!"; Spaceman said very little; JamPaladin and I carried the melodic part of the tune for the most part; and finally, I was responsible for muttering "kill it" at the end, along with "MOBGOBLINS" as inspired by the master himself, Shael Riley.

Zircon, on the ReMix tutorial episode-thing, I'd be particularly interested in learning the basics of remixing. My neighbor is going to *kindly purchase me a copy of FL Studio 6, which I understand is an entry-level program for this sort of thing.
I’d like to know how much musical knowledge (in terms of composition, arrangement, production, etc.) is required to get into the ReMixing scene. Does it take a formal education in music theory, or is it something you can pick up if you’re willing to work at it hard enough?
Also, what does it take to make a ReMix OCR-worthy? I think, as a judgefgt, you’d be able to help out on that sort of thing.
---
You guys are doing a great job on the show. It continues to sound very professional while remaining entertaining and engaging to the community. Keeps me going during the workday.

*cough-sputter-cough* You mean your neighbor is going to kindly buy you a copy? Of course that's what you mean.
which I understand is an entry-level program for this sort of thing.
Yes and no. Easy to learn, difficult to master, and in many ways limited without external input.
I’d like to know how much musical knowledge (in terms of composition, arrangement, production, etc.) is required to get into the ReMixing scene. Does it take a formal education in music theory, or is it something you can pick up if you’re willing to work at it hard enough?
Basically you'll notice SOME musical theory involvement. There's knobs marked arpeggio which would require you to know what an arpeggio is. There are chord features which feature chord names. The piano roll displays a piano... but really, ultimately, it's as required for you as it is for anybody... which is as much as you choose to believe. Many rock and roll guitarists had wonderful, talented, and fulfilling careers without ever officially learning a single note. They trained by ear and by practice. Similarly, the more you learn about the nature/science of sound the better. What can it hurt right?
Bottom line; you can get by fine putting random note blocks in random places until they sound good; but you may never know WHY they sound good.
Zircon, on the ReMix tutorial episode-thing, I'd be particularly interested in learning the basics of remixing. My neighbor is going to hook me up with FL Studio 6, which I understand is an entry-level program for this sort of thing.

Seconded.
My 2 cents on the musical background thing: It certainly helps, but isn't a requirement. Hell, many of the guitar greats can't even read music! Some people have a knack for that kind of thing (Van Halen, from what I've heard), others learn the rules and then know how to bend them (Soundgarden).
It also depends highly on the style of remixing IMO. Making a solo piano remix and a trance remix seem to me like very different endeavours...
But back to the remix tutorial idea. Rather than teaching any one program, maybe you should talk about the principles of remixing: how to handle original content, how to use and improve insturment samples, sound editing concepts like compression and reverb, etc.
Maybe I'm a little bitter cause I can't have FruityLoops on my Mac; shut up...
The Xyco
07-06-2006, 10:17 PM
Thanks for the advice on the musical-knowledge thing, since I've always been somewhat compositionally challenged. I remember a couple of years ago there was a pretty long thread on "how to mix" and such. Most of the responses affirmed that it's not for everyone, and encouraged learning music theory. Naturally, I wanted to start taking some music theory courses through high school, but they were only offered at the AP level, which I think would be a bit much being completely new to the subject. Now that I have some more free time, I can pay attention to these sorts of things, and develop some new skills. I think it'll be much more rewarding than sitting in my dorm or room and playing games all day.
Yes and no. Easy to learn, difficult to master, and in many ways limited without external input.
While my neighbor goes about creaming himself because he thinks Fruity Loops is the most amazing thing ever, I thankfully have been taught by the OCR community that it is considered to be a fairly limited program (depending on what you're trying to do, or course). Perhaps Zircon could touch up on some of the more common programs used in remixing.
All in all, I think it's a great idea Zircon, and it comes at a time I'm ready to listen, since I'll soon have much more free time to study this sort of thing.

Really glad to see you guys are into this idea. We were talking about it earlier, and I think zirc is planning on starting off with the basics for this first round. He'll probably talk about conceptual stuff and point people to some programs to experiment with, but it won't be too technical at first. If the response is good, I'm sure he'll wanna get into more detail in later installments. ^_^
As always, thanks for all your positive involvement. It really makes this show worthwhile and fun. :)!!

I would say that FL's major limitations come into play when you start working in the orchestral world.
In terms of arrangement options, a bit. It sucks for seeing the notes of multiple instruments at once. You'd have to bring up multiple piano rolls. It also sucks, but is not entirely limited for samples. I would be inclined to make orchestral in a midi program then import it in to FL to bring out and customize the samples.

Don't bother, that was my plan... it's just too much of a commitment all at once. Do both, listen to from maybe last week and the current ones, then, if you've got the bandwidth/space for it DownTHEMall. VGDJ EPISODE #048 HAS JUST NOW BEEN RELEASED ON WWW.VGDJ.NET! (http://www.vgdj.net) HOORAYYYY
We're a little behind on voting so far this month, so if you haven't yet, DO! (http://www.podcastalley.com/one_vote2.php?pod_id=4140)
This show is a little shorter than usual (although it's actually almost 40 minutes anyway, once you include the SEVEN FREAKING MINUTES OF VOICEMAILS) because there were some real life complications this week. Seeeeee? See how dedicated we arrrre? Zircon can't be here tonight for the release, but I'm sure he's with us in spirit. <3

I subscribed around the same time, when the last one in the feed was #10. It took me until this year's 2-month hiatus to get caught up to the present.
There's some decent stuff in the early ep.s, but I do think it's better now... Aurora answers the inevitable "pants" question in #2, the wingless made his Aurora Mix just after, DJP gets interviewed for #4 (definitely not as good as his appearence on the VGL episode, but still), the Canada meetup was for #10, and they talk about the Doom Remix project in #12.
And you have to hear what Aurora & Rayza did "behind the scenes"

Hellooooo VGDJ!
I've been listening to all the podcasts from the beginning this past week to catch up. It's hard work! (Not really) I started listening to VGDJ with the current hosts, Zircon and Pixietricks. So when I went to the beginning and found out it started with Rayza and Aurora I was like ZOMG! WILL I LIKE THEM?! And of course I did and was sad to see them go. Then The Wingless came on and I wasn't sure if I'd like him or not, but I did. Now I'm back up to the current hosts, Bear and Jillybean, and couldn't be happier. :D

Just finished listening. Another quality episode, so good work guys.
But I was wondering if I could get some sound bites from flow basket, so we could post them everytime somebody makes a thread in remixing called "FLstudio vs Reason?" or something similarly annoying. I would do it myself, but I'm away from my music machine with its wave editors...
Nice pilot episode of Flow Basket there, Mr Aversa :) Sounds a little awkward at first because we have 2 hosts and suddenly it's a segment with only one of you.
Oh, I thought Flow Basket sound kind of like Fruit Basket (for which pixie has a mix, I believe). Anyway, just a thought.
Oh, speaking about "anyway", does anyone else find... uhm.. coughzirconisoverusingitcough?
Aaannnd this episode suggests that pixie is converting her co-host into a pronounciation nazi >_>
So, to conclude, great job Bear and Jillybean :)

One possible difference might be in marker versus current. For example, (marker) I have lived twenty-one years, but (current) I am living in my twenty-second year. The only other difference that I've run across is in Asia (specifically South Korea), where you are considered a year old when you are born (they count a year for being in the womb).
Teddman123

The delay probably works out... I'm sure I'm not the first to think of it: be nice to have ep #050, ReMix #1500 and a new torrent running simultaneously. Especially the torrent... haven't been catching up on recent remixes since August of LAST year.
Which reminds me, you guys should set up a VGDJ torrent tracker. Would make it a lot easier for people to grab a bunch at once so they can catch up.

We tried that once with ThaSauce, but couldn't get enough people to seed us. ;_; But yeah, I agree with José; it'd be awesome if we could sync episode 50 with remix 1500, Summoning of Spirits, and the torrent stuff... That's been the plan, but it really all depends on how fast Dave and the project team can pull it off. Either way, we have so much stuff in store for this ep you won't know what hit you!

Hey Zircon. I just catched up in the last few episodes and heard that you may be looking for a new sig. If that's so, I could arrange something for you if you want. Just let me know...
Oh btw, I wanted to tell you that, about your podcast animation skillz, you're really getting better with each episodes and it shows. You've gotten a lot of confidence and you sounds way more lively then ever. In the beginning of your VGDJ duty, you seemed IMHO a little uneasy and not as confortable as you could, like you were a bit shy maybe. But now, it's like you've been doing this for years so congrats! And I dont mean that "Jillybean" has not improved as well. It's just that she's very natural with this so, she was already in the zone the first time, so it doesnt show as much... Anyway, I just wanted to tell you that because everyone deserve some elaborated praise every so often. :D

Yeah, I was trying to imitate the  smile from memory and did a pretty poor job at it--though I did have that green hoodie on by coincidence. I noticed the woman behind me just before I posted it .
I actually didn't have SGX's albums (or VGDJ, thanks to my dead iPod) with me Wednesday through Sunday. Trance music (don't start...) doesn't really fit in with the neo-Woodstock atmosphere there and besides, I haven't even listened to them all the way through yet. I'm really sorry; I have so much new music from so many sources to digest right now it isn't even funny!

Pottercast and the "M" podcast (Mugglecast) occasionally drop in on each other's shows in such a manner. Dreamstation.cc has also done it at least once, I think.
But otherwise you guys are doing a great job standing out from the pack! Don't know why more podcasts don't use background music or stingers that aren't outtakes.

In regards to our mics, we actually don't use anything too expensive. Typically, pixietricks uses a Logitech USB headset and I use a Shure SM-58 running through a Behringer UB502 (very cheap mixer) going to my EMU 0404 sound card ($99). When we do live shows we usually use an SM58 and an SM57 instead, but the sound quality isn't quite as good because it's running through my laptop which has a terrible sound card.

I'm listening to the reunion right now actually. I think it's pretty cool. I keep wondering if the former DJ Aurora is the one everyone kept refering to when I had changed my name to Aurora Borealis at one point.
I tend to use a logitech USB headset myself. It's the one that came with Karaoke Revolution. I find it amusing that I have found other uses for it though such as voice chat (which is something I really don't do, but I guess it's cool if I ever consider doing it). Those microphones are not bad, those are the rough and tough ones. They can at least give you decent sound which, from the sounds of it, they do their job well. It still sounds pretty good, which is what impressed me. I was expecting slightly lower quality, but this was a complete surprise. I am happy for this.

DJ Aurora?! Now, that's a new one to me... as far as I know, Aurora has always just been "Aurora" on OCR. I could be wrong though.
Anyway, I suppose it's also worth noting that from time to time we do some postprocessing stuff to make the sound a little better. For one thing, we always run some serious compression and limiting to smooth out the volume levels, and if there's any high amount of noise - electrical, mechanical, ambient, whatever - we use the noise removal tool in Audacity to clean that up. That was the case with Wingless' recording, for example, in episode 50. It had this low pitched rumble in the background, but with a little selective EQ and noise reduction we got rid of it completely.

Tsk Tsk, zircon.
As a fellow audiophile I am ASHAMED of you. :(
:D

ey fellas (and fell...ettes?) - given the good reaction to the first installment of the Flow Basket, I think I'm going to start planning another one. What would you guys like to hear on there? I was thinking about describing how you can structure a ReMix so it's not too close to the original but not unrecognizable either, as well as perhaps selecting the right instruments for the job. More audio examples this time as I don't have to do a long introduction going through the basics ;)

Sounds good, Zircon. A lot of times when I try to remix something, it gets bogged down with original material and strays too far from the original.
I loved the first Flow Basket, love to see another one.

I don't think so, for a few reasons. One is that I don't really intend to go into the specifics of any one program. Honestly, between resources on the web and instruction manuals, it's not too difficult to learn the ins and outs of a sequencer. Additionally, Finale is a notation program; not only do I not use those, but what more could I say about them? They let you write MIDI notes in traditional staff notation format, nothing too special there.
Flooooooooow Basket
Man, that's a great name. Sounds... groovy.

I haven't listened to ep.51 yet, but ep.50 rocked my socks. I've been listening to VGDJ since... like... episode 3 I think. It was my first podcast...
Sorry... getting a little choked up...
Thanks for the memories, guys.

Yeah, I think VGDJ was my first time too. It's very special to me as well.
Losing your virginity to Rayza is not something I'd be proud of, LAOS.

Heh heh, I didn't lose it to Rayza. I lost it to Pixie and Wingless. I'm going back and hearing the roots now too though.

I had heard a few of the first VGDJ's, but didn't really listen to it regularly until they released the Videogames Live one. I loved it so much that I totally got back into podcasts and VGDJ all over again.
