Just noticed there is no link to V's "La-De-Da!" in the shownotes.
My word, willest thou provide yours truly with a hyperlink please? "O-kay," thank you, goodbye.

Actually, V_Gasm said he has a more updated version of the remix, and so would prefer us *not* link to the initial submission. Sorry d00d.

We have returned from Day 1 of Otakon, and I have to say... the panel was a real disappointment. The 10AM slot was terrible! Not a single person came :( See for yourself:
http://www.vgdj.net/Images/ocremixpanel.jpg
AHAHAHAHAHA just kidding!!! The OCR panel we did went better than I think any of us could have dreamed of, some very small minor technical issues aside. We were seriously expecting on the order of 10-20 people, but we got WELL over ten times that many - I'd say at least 300. The room (which was enormous) was packed, and everyone was really into it. The meetup that followed was a blast, too. You can see more pics at the VGDJ action shot photo album (http://www.vgdj.net/album) and we'll be sure to have more after tomorrow.
Anyway, we're shooting to release the show around Monday evening, since this is gonna be a larger show - but trust me, it'll be worth it. ;)

:nicework: x1000. Without a doubt (correct me if I'm wrong) OCR's most organized piece of exposure to date. I mean published articles might compete with it and the like, but surely they can't compare to this many people in one room at one time.

There was no background music during the panel- just the original/remix example medley and the live performances. Is that what you're referring to? In any case, there's nothing we could do about that, but episode 053 will feature better audio from the event because we're releasing it as a videocast!

I love this station, it's so addictive and entertaining to listen to. Otakon sounded fun form the last episode, glad that you chose to show off The Ken Song, Da Black Market and The Dragon Song...and all the other songs of course.

Listening to that last show was pretty good. However, you can barely hear the intensity of the songs. In fact, they sound 305982905x worse than ever -- every song sounds really offkey and just...the worst ever. Maybe the videocast will be better?
And next time, you should play the Mario 1 bowser castle theme, and then...you know what to play from there :D
I forget if there were any rock covers.

Yeah - that couldn't be helped. We wanted to keep in all the reactions from the audience in there during the medley to preserve the live feel, you know? The videocast WILL have better audio for that however, so don't worry. :)

Indeed. Much better audio on the videocast to come!
The reason the sound quality was so bad is that we had to use a wireless mic for the performances, which wasn't hooked up to the audio mixer. So all the music you heard was echoing back to us from the very farthest wall in the room, causing it to sound weird and flat. The acoustics in there were pretty bad, unfortunately. :(

Hmmm, I guess zircon could use his mod powers to update the first post by Rayza, sure. That might not be a bad idea anyway, considering so much has changed since VGDJ first came to be.

Anywho, yeah, I think it's good to update the host and mini-host information, but considering Rayza made the first post, it might be confusing for newcomers not to see his and Aurora's names in there. Perhaps start another heading called "Past Hosts" and explain who started it, how Wingless stood in for five shows, etc etc. (Yeah yeah, Fusion, more episode 3 love! :P)
Also, if you're not gonna capitalize your name, don't do it for mine either. It's not in caps on the boards, and I'm OCD like that. ^-^
zircon
08-14-2006, 05:13 PM
You got it. I'm always lowercase, yo.
It's really weird...for some reason, a lot of people tend to write my name in ALL caps, so it's like people are shouting at me all the time. :P I mean, it's not like it's an acronym or anything...it's just my first initial + last name.
I have playlists for certain OCR remixers (won't reveal it though, it'll alieanate some people :P) and I try to come up with half decent names for it instad of [USERNAME]'s playlist.
So Dhsu's playlist name is Walking Dhsu's. Yeah. Piano groove.

Um, pixie... zircon... shouldn't the videocast still be more like Episode 52v?
Nooooo, because we've put a ridiculous amount of time and effort into this thing, and it has some content (i.e. better live performance sound, and the trivia & prizes) that didn't make it to Episode 052... Plus an introduction by me, and voicemails/pictures/stinger at the end. Besides, just having the visual aspect alone is enough to make this a full out show. ^-^
So here's the scoop!
After three days of trying to work with MPEG-4, we have realized that it is an awful format when it comes to internet interaction. So we're going to reencode the video to .mov, which is a format that iTunes should recognize in our feed. Unfortunately, the movie won't be playable on your iPod unless you convert it yourself. But that's a small price to pay, considering most of our listeners simply grab the show off the site or on iTunes.
If all goes well, it should be out sometime today! Sorry about the wait. ;_;

Pixie: Since you're a Mac user, check out iSquint (http://www.isquint.org/) for easily encoding iPod-compatable videos.
And, it can convert videos from YouTube for download if you know how (http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/14.08/howtovideo.html).

EPISODE 053 (W/ MULTIPLE DIFFERENT VIDEO ENCODINGS) WILL BE RELEASED TONIGHT AT 11:00PM!
Don't forget the popcorn. ;)

VGDJ: EPISODE #053 "DAY OF THE VIDEOCAST" IS NOW AVAILABLE AT VGDJ.NET!!! (http://www.vgdj.net)
Yes, the wait is finally up! I do apologize for how long it took to crank this thing out. There were many problems during the reencoding process, as I'm sure some of you have read. But this being our first ever videocast, we wanted to give you the best quality we could. The bulk of the vid is footage from our panel at Otakon, but there are other goodies as well!
That being said, we have three different resolutions for you to choose from: low (70 MB), normal (130 MB), and high (400 MB). Take yer pick, and enjooooyyyy... ^-^
P.S. Very special thanks to Jiggles McPuff for recording the panel, and Kroze for all his help with the reencoding!

And the video came out really really REALLY good from its "First" version *CoughcoughLightingHelpsALotcough*...
Still, hopfully the three diffrent versions shall satisfy everyone on any connection they might have (Except for those poor poor 56kers... Its amazing those sad bastards still exist..).
And the Panel came out great!

No you two didn't! Day of the Tentacle?!?!
Utter hilarity.
VGDJ is simply getting too good at making me laugh. Enough already! =x
EDIT: Well, darn, just from the intro I thought it was you guys dressed as the tentacles. But still, wonderfully silly video of 'em. ;D And seeing the panel makes me wish I could've attended. D:

Awesome. Just...awesome.
NowI feel like an ass for not going to Otakon. (I'm not really a big fan or even a mediocre fan of most anime so I generally stay away from cons. Too much weirdness).

Haha, you thought that was us, Chris? I WISH we were that awesome... But now both the green *and* purple tentacles have registered on OCR, so I'm sure we'll be seeing more of them. ^-^

I've got the same problem here.
Think it'd be a good idea to set up a torrent for the high quality movie or something? Might save a lot of bandwidth.

Worked fine for me in multiple video players (which is saying something considering it's in .mov format). Real One Quicktime & VLC, and those are just the ones I tried. :P
I'd expect that if you get this error you just need to update/download some different codecs or software. I personally have like 8 video players; no matter how perfect any one player is having several back-ups so that ONE works is better.
It's also possible your download was corrupted by any other number of factors.

I'm not on my normal computer because I'm on vacation but unfortunately I can't watch it either :[ It asked me to download an mpeg4 codec and then would only play sound. I'll just have to wait till i'm at jill's to watch :D
http://www.vgdj.net/album/slides/175.jpg
In Soviet Russia, you rape tentacle!
Edit: Also, I'm sure most of you are aware already, but to clarify to those not in the know, these guys actually aren't cosplaying as stereotypical hentai tentacles. They are, in fact, dressed up as the Purple and Green Tentacles from the LucasArts classic Day of the Tentacle. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Day_of_the_tentacle)
Jillian Aversa
08-17-2006, 04:05 PM
Ja, we know. That's why we named the show "Day of the Videocast." :D
Anywho, for those people receiving the compressor error message: which version did you download? Low, normal, or high res? I wanna see if there is a problem with any one of those files specifically. All of them work for me, but hey, you never know.
I noticed that Abadoss posted in our blog about that error message, but whatever it was, he seems to have fixed it? Can you tell the others what you did?
Doug: I have no idea why it would ask you for an mp4 codec... the movies are MOV. :dstrbd:
EDIT: Woops, that comment wasn't from Abadoss. My bad. Anyway, if you are getting the error message, that probably means you need to upgrade to Quicktime 7! But it should play in other players as well, like VLC etc.
Haha, this videocast was awesome. It's amazing how professional VGDJ looks to the outsider. I mean, I'm sure it is, but to us, it feels like a cosy personal project instead of a behemoth ranking no.1 on the music radio list. I bet it was really fun. Also, I wish the tentacle had sung Gerudo Valley but ok. Jill hugged him anyway
And I think I speak for all of us when I say we share the same feelings as pretzel painting guy.
So yeah, overall great show, keep the good stuff coming.
PS Doug is awesome, he went on skype and made a live preformance for me with lover's reef and everything. It was awesome. Also, at the same time, I found out my mic was broken and now I have none :(
Have a good vacation.

In response to peoples codec problems
You MUST have Quicktime version 7.1 (I actually think that is the newest version) due to the type of compression that was used to get the video small...
You can find the codec free on quicktime.com
I am sorry if this causes anyone any problems.

Yeah, I heard your call and I was like, "Huhhh? That doesn't solve the mystery..." ^_~
I don't know what the debate over tetris music is but...
* The theme tune used in the Game Boy edition of Tetris (Music A) has become very widely known, to the point that it is the theme song of level 20 of Tetris DS, even though that level is based on the NES version of Tetris. It is a Russian folk tune called "Korobeyniki" or "Korobeiniki."
* Music A in the NES version is "Dance Of The Sugar Plum Fairy," a tune noted to be scene 14c of act two of The Nutcracker, which was composed by Tchaikovsky.
* Music B in the Tengen version is the Kalinka, a famous Russian song written by Ivan Petrovich Larionov
* Music C in the Game Boy version is an arrangement of Johann Sebastian Bach's Suite No. 3 In B Minor, BWV 814, IV. Menuett - Trio.

Wait does that mean that those songs are technically not originally made for the game so they shouldn't be on OCR? I sure hope not, and I would think that this has been addressed long before I started coming here, so don't mind this noob comment then.

Normally, we talk on Skype and each record our own ends of the conversation with microphones/headsets and free audio programs such as Audacity and Cacophony. Then they are edited together, along with background music and special clips, for the show!

That's like EXACTLY what we look like when we do it!
Broken: Recording quality has nothing to do with Audacity, really. It depends on your microphone equipment and sound card. ^_~

Not even gonna comment on that alblum image :(
Anyway, we've got some news for everyone regarding our release schedule...
Episode 056 of VGDJ will be released on Saturday, September 9th!
We're going to try this schedule and see how it works, but I think it's gonna be awesome. No longer will you have to stay up late Sunday nights to be the first person on your block to get the latest episode of the show! Now, you can enjoy our late Friday night chats in #vgdj, pick up the new episode when the clock strikes 12:00, sit back, and relax with the knowledge that you've got the whole weekend ahead of you. Pretty boss, huh? ;)
Also, this makes it a little easier for us since we'll be busier during the school year, and doing the show a few days earlier gives us our weekends off... and I think we're gonna need 'em for this term.

nice. I'd rather sleep Sunday nights.
No matter what I still have to wait until 5 in the morning, so I'd still be dozing while the release comes through. :P Interesting move, mind you.
Much better. Now I can listen to it monday at school during boring philosophy classes.

In the words of the Bay City Rollers, it's SATURDAY, and as such...
Episode 056 of VGDJ has been released, and is now available at www.vgdj.net (http://www.vgdj.net)!
While the filesize of this episode is a bit more manageable than has been the trend lately, make no mistake; we've got tons of good stuff on this one... including a stinger that I really enjoyed contributing to ;) Gogogo download!!!

Love the stinger, guys. Also, I approve of this release schedule change - it means the show comes out around 2:00pm on saturday for me, which is great as I can grab it then, and listen to it on the weekend - as opposed to during the week when I should be studying.

Awesome! I'm glad the release schedule is working out better for everyone. I think a large portion of our listeners still haven't realized that we released a show Saturday, given the number of thread posts and responses we've gotten, but they should figure it out by Monday. ^_~

Very proud of our FF7 collab. We were gonna keep it under wraps until the project release, but this seemed like a really neat way to debut it without giving it away to the whole community. Only the most die-hard VGDJ fans will reap the rewards of listening to our interview, eh eh?
Gonna quote this, since it's a page old now and some may have missed it:

It's time for the weekend, and we got your hookup:
Episode 057 (Flow Basket part 2) of VGDJ has been released, and is now available at www.vgdj.net (http://www.vgdj.net)!
If 056 could be compared to a grilled chicken sub, 057 would be a 16 inch meatball sub on garlic bread with extra cheese. Yeah, that's right, I went there. ;) Anyway, we had a lot of fun recording this one, so hopefully you'll all get a kick out of it - and of course, there's also the second installment of the Flow Basket included for all you aspiring ReMixers out there...

Unfortunately, I believe that you have the wrong Menomonie. I live in "Menomonie," which is in western Wisconsin, just east of Minneapolis. It looks like you're thinking "Menomonee Falls." There's a Menominee, Wisconsin in the north central area. There's also a Menominee Michigan just across the border in eastern Wisconsin, too, just to add to the confusion. I grinned ear-to-ear when zirc said he's big on smooth jazz and Paul Hardcastle, because I've been the biggest fiend for his music since "Rainforest." I'm talkin' two decades. I also snapped my fingers saying "damn, I wanted to be first to emulate his Synclavier stylings in a future ReMix."
Then you talk about how "pixie loves her 'hoo-hoos'," and I couldn't have been the only one thinking, "I'm pretty sure everyone loves her-

Yeah, you can go here [link removed] for the MP3 and edit out the interview, that's what I did.
NO, PLEASE DO NOT DO THAT!
Two reasons:
1) Brian and Becky of GMR stream their shows for good reason. Don't violate the trust we have with them!
2) Zircon and I don't want our collab to be out, and especially not passed around, until the project released. Please respect our wishes!

Yeah, I was figuring they didn't want it released. They specifically said they didn't want it released prematurely, which is why they didn't play it on their show, so peeps wouldn't have the mp3 and could do that. I wanted to wait for the release anyway. It'll be more exciting that way.

A little about what zircon says about Sixto Sounds' Twin Blood. The original tune is from Double Dragon II; specifically the tune played during the fight against the final boss (when he can no longer make himself invisible). The tune our good hosts heard in The Next Level was the main theme of Double Dragon (I think it was from the first game, but I'm not too sure).
To summarize, the 2 tunes are different; though probably our elemental host (I think it's not a coincidence that he knew that tune from Elemental Master :D) detect some degree of similarity between them.
And great silly stinger! Made me laugh :)

Ah man, you're right. Wow, I lose on two counts. :( I guess no Double Dragon love from me... I admit, I only played the game a couple times.
