Hey, as long as you admit your downfalls, you're on the way to recovery. Granted, I never 'played' Double Dragon... any of them.
Edit: YAY! 201 First Post!
Oh... heh... I guess I don't need to attach this in this my e-mail to VGDJ anymore. :P
Anyway yeah, :nicework: q-pa.
Yeah, sorry bout that.
I thought you said it would go out over the weekend and I didn't hear back from you. And I didn't want the Hoo-hoos to be a last episode thing...
Actually, the version you have, LAOS, is the original version (http://digamejh.melankolly.com/online_storage/HooHoosOnFirst.mp3).
And Pixie: Any paticular reason why you decided to record this episode with n00b on your head? :o

If you really wanted to point out an accomplishment you could say YAY! 3000th reply.
Ah man, you're right. Wow, I lose on two counts. :( I guess no Double Dragon love from me... I admit, I only played the game a couple times.
Aww... I didn't intend it that way. I was going for the "when-I-grow-up-I-want-to-be-like-zircon" way :D

Hey Drum, no offense but getting someone with a bit of an asian accent to pronounce Saskatchewan didn't help things much. Maybe it was just the audio quality or something, but it sounded to me like she did it wrong too.
Here's a (pseudo)phonetic guide with each syllable on each line. The emphasis is on the second syllable.
Sask (pretty much only one way to do this)
atch (like catch)
eh (not pronounced eh like the typical Canadian stereotype, "What's up, eh?", but more like meh without the m. If anyone can describe this better phonetically, please do)
wan (like Obi-wan kenobi)
Good luck next meetup report :)

Ep. 59, while it was a little shorter than most episodes (understandably so), had a MONSTER sized stinger that more than made up for it. So now we finally know what goes on behind the scenes at VGDJ... cooking. Seriously though, that stinger made my day. It could be VGDJ's best ever, and I've been listening for a while.
Also, the video was pretty good too. Just what the hell is VGDJ brand ReMixer Fuel? Needless to say, it looks nasty.

Naw, they have a really big fanbase to get votes off of. They were #1 on PA for a really long while before that Keith and the Girl thing slipped in there. It's a Libertarian talk show where listeners can call in and talk about whatever they want. It's a really good podcast, and, besides being higher above us in the overall rankings, they really pose no threat to us as a podcast due to their content. To be honest, I know the top TOP 10 is really great and all, but I'm more impressed that we continue to stay really high, if not #1, in the music category, which means we continually beat out podcasts with similar content to ours no problem.

Hey, even though we're mentioning it on the upcoming show, I thought I'd point out the Google ads that are now on www.vgdj.net - we ask that you please do NOT block them, and if you're even slightly interested in what they're displaying to click on 'em. Takes seconds of your time and it helps support our ongoing costs (eg. prizes for contests!) So, if you like the show and have a fraction of a minute, click on one of our ads every so often. :)
Dimah
10-13-2006, 01:24 PM
Thats cool. You have to pay for everything somehow.
I'm going to click now...
EDIT: Hmmm, i thought they had always been there
Kanthos
10-13-2006, 01:37 PM
It seems like they don't have a lot of links to choose from. I've hit refresh around 50 times and only seen 4 different external links. I clicked on all of them.
zircon
10-13-2006, 01:40 PM
Yeah; because the ads are new, you're not gonna see a huge variety yet. Gotta have our site thoroughly indexed or some shiz.
Anyway, thanks for support! Just a click here and a click there every so often is massively helpful.
Kanthos
10-13-2006, 03:32 PM
I wonder if Google would figure it out if you wrote a clicking-bot. Something that scanned the page every 5 minutes, found the links in the ad section, and went to them. Just think! VGDJ could be rich! Or I could get arrested or something.
But seriously, I don't mind clicking to support my favourite podcast.
Xerol Oplan
10-13-2006, 03:43 PM
I've been using adsense on my sites for about a year now (zircon asked me about it a few days ago). It does go by page content, but more importantly, it goes by changes in page content - so once a new item gets posted up, most of the ads will be relevant to that. They do have measures in place to detect click-fraud, since it's a major concern to people that pay to have their ads displayed. That's the other thing - through the adwords program, advertisers bid on keywords that appear on websites, and are matched up with the 'best fit' for the words, rather than having to find websites to advertise on (although you can directly target a specific website). This also means that sites that get more traffic generally get better placements, and therefore more revenue, so just by visiting the site you're increasing the value of the ads.
The Unsung Plumber

10-13-2006, 04:26 PM
You guys are the best! Keep it up. Just a couple seconds a day from all our listeners and we would never need to worry about this stuff ever again. Just remember, please, only click on the ads legitimately. Don't tell your little brother to sit there and keep clicking on 'em. Don't refresh the page 500 times to increase our traffic. Much like how we don't support proxy voting at podcastalley, we don't want people doing things that are less than legal for us.

DoD is a guitar mixing competition? Nay, I think not.
Its a instrument remixing competition. As in, the lead instrument has to be played, not programmed.
Just a quick correction. =/

Spunkle's right. It's just that most of the entries have guitar as the lead instrument, because it's popular. ^_~

Spunkle's right. It's just that most of the entries have guitar as the lead instrument, because it's popular. ^_~
Technically, if you were to follow this logic, what you'd be saying is that the only reason there are guitar leads is because there are guitar leads... in some quantum circles, this might fly, but, generally speaking, this idea is a self-originating and self-defeating paradox...
Kanthos
10-16-2006, 12:42 PM
Due to "technical difficulties" * the full story of my entry didn't get listed. Adding Zelda to Footloose was exactly as I described it when I called in. However, there's more to the Mario thing than just switching the music. It was my idea, but if you listen to the two clips, the bass player and drummer were obviously in on it as well. I also cleared it with the actor playing Ren, the lead character, and with Sean, the conductor and my co-musical director.
During the original clip, Ren slides on his knees to the front of the stage during bars 7 and 8 (when the piano is playing chords each eighth note; it's the loud section in the first audio clip). He's back on his feet and singing on bar 9 (on my audio clips, the electric piano sound is playing the vocal line). What we did instead was to have Ren do a shorter slide and start a couple bars early. Then, when we played the two bars from Mario, he actually jumped up and punched a brick, so he actually *acted* like Mario in addition to the music being from Mario.
* Technical difficulties, in this case, means the following. I don't listen to podcasts over the weekend, so I didn't hear the VDGJ episode promoting the contest until two days before the first deadline. I didn't have time to put the audio together, so I submitted a description of what I'd done via e-mail. When the deadline was extended by a week and I resubmitted, I tried to call in my entry. I got cut off, so I e-mailed the MP3s to Zircon and Pixietricks. They played the partial audio clip and the MP3s instead of reading the e-mail (would've been nice, I sound AWFUL on the phone) and playing the MP3s, so the best part of the story got cut off. Oh well.

Yay. Sweetness makes my mouth water. :P
I was also going to ask you why your background music has gotten softer--almost inaudible--in recent episodes (although it did pick up again towards the end of #60). Not only can I not decide if the ReMix played is worth downloading anymore, but I think it really makes your podcast stand out and makes it all more entertaining. 8)
Also, am I the only one who noted that Pixie's "nerd" and (original) "old" voices kind of sound similar? Are you implying something here...?
Jillian Aversa
10-20-2006, 02:19 AM
Hmmmmm... Come to think of it, our background music *has* gotten softer lately. Not really sure why, but we can fix that, although it might be too late for this coming show.
zircon
10-20-2006, 02:31 AM
It can be hard to gauge sometimes. With some BGM, according to the actual dB level, it's fairly loud, but the range of frequencies might make it sound softer than it should. There's also the level you're listening at; if you have the show on at a lower level, the music will seem EXTRA soft, whereas if you turn it up, it will be apparent to a greater degree (as in, the actual ratio of bgm:talking will appear to change). Finally, listening on speakers vs. headphones can also affect it. On headphones, even very quiet BGM will be more audible, especially if they are closed back, but on speakers it will sound much softer.
What's the "right" setup to listen at, then? I dunno. That's why it's tricky.

10-20-2006, 06:03 AM
I expect podcasts will usually be heard on portables, through headphones, so monitoring for headphone listening may be best. Mostly the BGM level seems fine to me in that regard. I dunno if you guys use any compression on the show's final mix... if not, maybe that might help.
Jillian Aversa
10-20-2006, 12:52 PM
We compress our voices and those of the report and voicemail crew, but not the music itself. For background music, we custom slide the volume around according to the piece, but featured music usually goes untouched.
ZOMG show at midnight tonight!
zircon
10-20-2006, 02:25 PM
Yeah. The typical comp setup I use has a threshold of about -26db, ratio of 9:1, 15ms attack, 200ms release, and a makeup gain of ~13db. Sometimes a little more, sometimes a little less. I then have a hard limiter to tame any unwanted spikes. Compressing the BGM might work - I've never really tried it. Master track compression would affect the remix review clips we play which is no good.

OMG! DUAL WIDESCREEN DESKTOP VGDJ WALLPAPER PACK II Sneak Peak THINGY!
(both were 1280x720, but reduced in size by over half cuz actual was TOO DAMN BIG!!!)
http://img120.imageshack.us/img120/5122/lorenzodesktopnv4.jpg
Showing off a couple wallpapers for the VGDJ Wallpaper Pack II I have in the works at the moment.
"Super Mario 3 Showcase"(left) and "Cel Shaded Mushroom"(right)
Cel Shaded Mushroom is pretty much finished while the other could use a few more things here and there, but all in all, pretty much complete. These wallpapers are only a few of many wallpapers I have created for Wallpaper Pack II, and will be released upon the arrival of the 100th episode of Vgdj. I'd say there are at least 4 times as many wallpapers as the original wallpaper pack. And on top of that other assets will be released along with it.
That's right boys and girls. The Drunken Spy is pulling out all the stops on this one. Lolz
Now I know that episode 100 seems a while away seeing as VGDJ is in the early 60s at the moment, but that gives me enough time to spruce up things here and there with the wallpapers, maybe even dish out some "extras" in the process. Only time will tell.
Oh yeah, and you haven't downloaded the Original Wallpaper Pack 1, you can find it here. http://www.jilliangoldin.com/vgdj_wallpapers/
Or if you want the brand spanking new remastered edition(1.1 as I call it), go here http://www.geocities.com/debeerguy007/wallpaperpack1_1.html
I don't think I ever formally thanked you guys for giving mention of the first wall pack on the 50th, so let me say thanks now to both Andy for being a cool dude and to Jill for being a nice lady for hosting the walls on her own site. Keep doing the great work on the show with the same passion you guys always have. And when Wallpaper Pack II is done and ready, Jill will be able to sigh with relief in knowing that she won't have any more bandwidth from her site sucked up. Lolz
I have things taken care of on this end this time around. Maybe

But keeping with the 1-a-week format, Episode 100 will be July 21, 2007!
Anyway, as far as the audio issue goes, maybe Zircon editing the shows (which I imply he's doing from his description) has something to do with it.
I listen to the shows primarily through my earbud headphones on my iPod--which is a change from a few months before where it was through either my stereo or in my car.

I think someone (not I, since I'd have no time to do it) should go through and tally up the total time that VGDJ, as a whole, takes up... it would be interesting to see what the total is...
Jillian Aversa
10-24-2006, 04:14 AM
Andy and I have been splitting the editing for the last couple months, with the occasional exception when one person is unavailable. As for your question, Abadoss, here's a breakdown!
Preparing the notes outline and organizing voicemail/report files: ~30 min
Recording: ~1 to 2 hours
File uploads/transfers: ~40 min
EQ/Compression: ~20 min
Editing: ~6 to 8 hours total (so half that for each individual host)
Exporting/Tagging/Uploading: ~1 hour
Shownotes: ~1 hour
Total: ~10 to 14 hours
And for special shows like the Anniversary Meetup, Video Games Live, 8bit Genocide, Otakon Panel, Episode #050 etc, it's of course much more. Even when we're not doing things directly for the show, we're always around checking emails, planning contests, and talking to you folks in IRC. VGDJ is more than a hobby, I'd say; it's a way of life! And you guys make it all worthwhile. :D

What's with the new name, Jill? Sola? What's it mean? Why did you change it? What was wrong with pixietricks? So. Many. Questions.
You should hang out in #vgdj. I talked to her about it in there... Since she's so busy these days, I'll try and answer what I can.
What's with the new name, Jill?
She changed her name.
Sola?
Yes, Sola.
What's it mean?
Upon trying to discover it's lingual origin through Babelfish, I have discovered that Sola:
-is both Spanish & Italian for 'Single' (which she's not) and Portuguese for 'Sole'.
Answers.com's Firefox Extension also lead me to discover that Sola:
-is a municipality in the county of Rogaland, Norway.
...which then lead me to the disambiguation in Wikipedia which told me that Sola:
-is Latin (feminine) for 'only' or 'just', and is used in phrases such as sola fide, sola gratia or sola scriptura
-is an Indian swamp plant with pithy stems
-and is a city on Vanua Lava, Vanuatu, and is the capital of Torba Province.
...
But what she TOLD me was that it means: "Sun".
Must be in some language that the Internet has not allowed me flawed yet instant access to, ie: Jill's made-up space language.
Why did you change it?
She wanted a name that sounded a little more official and professional. Since she is frequently involved with Opera she felt, and I have to agree, that the new name strikes a more womanly and operatic feel.
What was wrong with pixietricks?
She was never very attached to this name to begin with; I seem to remember in the recent past VGDJs her mentioning how she chose the nickname in a bit of a haste originally, and she may have even polled some people around #vgdj for some suggestions around when she was nearly ready to lose the alias. Pixietricks, I remember hearing, sounds a lot more juvenille to her.
Splunkle
11-01-2006, 05:55 AM
I don't know about this "Sola" buisness, but Sol (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sol) is Latin for the personification of the Sun. Sola is probably the female version or somesuch - Latin is one of languages where the endings change depending on whether the noun is male or female, or the subject or object of a sentence.
Upon trying to discover it's lingual origin through Babelfish, I have discovered that Sola:
-is both Spanish & Italian for 'Single' (which she's not) and Portuguese for 'Sole'.
"Sol o/a" is also used in Spanish to mean "alone" and "lonely". "Sola" is the feminine form and "solo" is the male form. "Sólo" (with an accent on the first o) means "only".
I don't know about this "Sola" buisness, but Sol is Latin for the personification of the Sun. Sola is probably the female version or somesuch - Latin is one of languages where the endings change depending on whether the noun is male or female, or the subject or object of a sentence.
"Sol" means "sun" in Spanish, but "sol" is exclusively masculine. In Spanish the endings also change according to gender (because it's a Romance language), such as "profesor"/"profesora" ("teacher", male/female forms respectively).

Hehe, thanks, LAOS. Those were more hypothetical questions than anything else. I do remember pixietricks mentioning on some episode, maybe the Game Music Radio interview, that she didn't like her name that much. I personally prefer pixietricks, but I'm sure I'll get used to Sola.

I definitely have to say that I like the idea of reality as a "looming spectre," as was posted on VGDJ's homepage...stupid life, taking us away from the things we want to do (like mixing!) Grr...
At least we have our friends at VGDJ to give us a weekly dose of surreality. A toast to VGDJ!

On a side note, maybe there should be some script on the website which allows people to affect the outcome of the highly exciting RRR :D Like the number of clicks for each number somehow affect the outcome of the random number generator or something... Heh :x

Or maybe, instead of clicking random numbers to affect the rolling, we should all VOTE! Yay!
Seriously though, if Zircon and Pixietricks wanted some kind of script for people to place their vote for the Russian roulette, and the die roll was weighted accordingly, I'd be happy to write one. It'd probably take 15 minutes or so, plus a few minutes to integrate it with the VGDJ site.

Well, I figured I should add my own well wishes to the couple along with everyone else. I could also go and say that I had my suspicions ever since the "hosts only" 4th of July meet-up. Though with no proof I could also say that on that 4th of July whales were substituted for all fireworks. Anyway, I wish you well, and envy you're ability to actually get together from time to time. I'm currently in a relationship that's in underground-secret-squirrel mode until the holidays are past, so I know what it's like to be hush-hush. However, I live in the middle of the ocean (Hawaii meet-up anyone?) and the lovely lady resides in the Bible belt; so yeah, travel envy.

Myspace is just a marketing tool masquerading as a 'social networking' site. Traffic is traffic, and if it gets more listeners (and votes) then it's usually a good thing.
If you're worried about it looking like crap, keep in mind they let you style it up yourself. While this usually results in complete crap most of the time, have you seen Rama's page (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=4698532)?

You guys should get Abadoss to make your fires from now on.
Well, I should hopefully be in Boston by Fall 2007, so that might be a possibility...

Um...
What is there to burn in Boston? Library books, maybe?
BTW, you do realize Pixie has a pad in Baltimore now and Zircon's home is still Pleasentville NY, right?

This podcast just reminded me of something. There is most certainly not enough Katamari Damacy love on OCR. Other than the random character picture of the Prince up top, and random background music clips, we get nothing from one of the most random and awesome games in existence. Is that right?! Is that fair?!
On another note, Zircon was most decidedly not a Boy Scout...wow....

Just got a button. 8)
I looked at the envelope in confusion for a few seconds. At first I wondered why someone would send me something in the mail, and then I wondered who the person sending it was. The name certainly looked familiar...
I'm no button aficionado, but I think it looks nice.
Thanks VGDJ.
