"WinglessMix": Ah, my everlasting mark in the world of VGDJ.
Holy crap, I'm back! Though, only like three people probably remember me. Great videocast, guys!
I remember you...you did the Wingless mix.
Yes, she got to steppin'
Welcome back.
*waits for the inevitable news, if #vgdj is to be believed...*

Hey everyone.
Okay, so we have some good news and some bad news. The bad news is that VGDJ is about to take a break for a little while. The good news, however, is that we will be back... and hopefully with more interviews and special features than ever. For all you die-hard fans out there, however, we feel that an explanation is in order:
This week we were planning on doing an episode entirely devoted to the new Sonic 3 & Knuckles project: "Project Chaos." We came up with some very fun ideas for an interview with one of the project leaders, including a detailed "game show" type quiz with musical examples and sound effects. To make a long story short, of the two people who were involved in the projects' direction, neither showed up for the interview even after they agreed on a time and promised to be there.
Unfortunately, this is not the first time something like this has happened; we have been stood up by people in the past, including a certain female remixer that was supposed to star on Episode #065: Chicks in the Mix. Frankly, this is somewhat hurtful and insulting to us. We invest an enormous amount of our time per week on this show- not just one or two days. Because it takes a lot of work to put together an episode, we literally have to plan our lives around things like interviews and special features, so when other people don't even give us the courtesy of telling us they'll be late (or not show up at all), it's extremely frustrating.
This podcast exists to promote the community of OverClocked Remix and the individuals who comprise it. We're offering our fellow musicians an incredible opportunity for publicity, and being repeatedly snubbed. Doesn't that speak something? Why should we have to come after people, even nag them, to get them to follow through? It's simply not worth the effort on our part.
Additionally, while we have fun releasing a weekly show, we also don't want to burn out... and we don't want YOU guys to burn out. After all, if you think about it, TV shows don't run a new episode every single week- maybe half the weeks in a year, tops. So, while this Project Chaos episode was a catalyst for our decision to take a break, it wasn't the only factor.
We'll still be here on the forums and on IRC, of course. And we do really appreciate all of you who listen to the show, have donated money, bought a t-shirt, left us a voicemail, clicked on our ads (when we still had 'em), sent us feedback, or even just voted for us on podcastalley. You're the ones that make this show worth doing. We just need a breather. ;)
Perhaps when we get back from this break, the OCR community will have a little more respect for VGDJ... maybe even be excited at the prospect of a fresh episode? Until then: take care, guys!

I'm sad to hear that. 'Twill be missed while 'tis gone.
How long a break are we talking about here?
Sorry to hear it, but maybe a break is a good idea. I'd prefer a break or bi-weekly episodes over burnout anyday.

On both the being stood up and the temporary break. But hey, burnout doubly sucks, so I'm sure I can live with it.

Also, I really enjoyed the videocast. You show keeps getting better!

Anyhoo, I bet, despite being stood up and whatnot [pretty uncool, to say the least], I'm betting this is their ultra-sneaky way of getting more "quality time" together.

That sucks. I'm by no means a regular listener, but I do enjoy VGDJ and listen to it when I get the chance. As a (former) radio show host myself, I can certainly understand not wanting to burn out, and trying to live your life around a radio show, which is very difficult to do after awhile. Best of luck to you guys, and hopefully you'll return soon!

You might think there'd be more appreciation for the
show and what goes into it. I know I have it.
I also have appreciation for the button also sent to
me from the survey. I'm pretty sure it was a button,
anyway. Would you all like me to illustrate the new
dictionary definition of "FUCKED UP"?

So, no button.
Please join me in delivering a giant middle finger to

Person who remembers you +1 (Actually, it's more for you and SGX'x Different [Euphoria mix] from SGX's Better than Sliced Beats album, though I also remember teh awesomeness of the Winglessmix as well. Just FYI.)
As for VGDJ, you guys deserve a break from the insanity, and even if this is a clever ruse to spend more time together (come on, you know it is!) I hope it all goes swimmingly. Ya'll have fun, but ya'll be sure to come back now, ya'hear?
In the meantime, I'm gonna think of some fun things to do with my new pin...(is anyone else keeping the envelopes? Call me crazy, but I plan to profit off of any major success from our talented co-hosts through the wonderful institution known as E-bay...)
Black Mage
11-30-2006, 07:43 PM
Yay, got my VGDJ button today (cute l'il thing). I noticed that the envelope mine came in did have a few button-sized holes in it. I'm guessing the general problem is that buttons have been punching holes into their envelopes while going through the myriad sorters and rollers at the post office, thus allowing some of the buttons to fall out en rout.
I'd feel really sorry for you right now, but that's how things go. I know that you wanted to add another one of your crazy spins on the podcast, and I know I love to see you do such things like that. But as a member of the project itself, I still think that it's not a good idea to blame people for doing things that went completely wrong or was mistimed or whatever.
On top of that, Hadyn (the guy who didn't respond) mentioned in the project topic itself that he lives in Australia, so he couldn't come anyway.
Still I do feel really upset because this was a podcast I was waiting with anticipation for for a really long time. I don't want to act like a pushover, but I felt heartbroken to see this, not only to assume that KFC and SnappleMan have sort of caused this decision, but also a reaction like this.
I guess there's no point getting fussy over spilt milk, so I might as well leave you two to do your thing, whichever it is.

Well, that's some bad news for us listeners, but I can absolutely understand this decision.
Take a break, come back with new energy, and let's all hope for more reliable guests/interview partners.

It's an honour to be interviewed on vgdj if you ask me, don't know why they would miss it,
I'm gonna miss the show while its gone, but I am kinda looking forward to a bumper comeback episode catching up on all the happenings, that would be great. Hope to hear from you guys soon.

Just got a button. 8)
I looked at the envelope in confusion for a few seconds. At first I wondered why someone would send me something in the mail, and then I wondered who the person sending it was. The name certainly looked familiar...
I'm no button aficionado, but I think it looks nice.
Thanks VGDJ.

I guess there's no point getting fussy over spilt milk, so I might as well leave you two to do your thing, whichever it is.
First of all, living in Australia does not necessarily mean we couldn't find a time to do the interview that works for both parties. We've been planning a TO interview for a while now, (although he has some technical recording issues at the moment). And even if there were no possible way he could have done it, the fact that he didn't even bother to reply to our email was insulting.
Secondly, KFC and Snappleman were both extremely unreliable, even after we all agreed on a time and stressed the importance of their being there. KFC came home over an hour and a half late...high...and then complained that his microphone was "suddenly stolen." Snappleman promised that the next day would be no problem at all, and then bailed out last minute without even emailing/IMing/calling us when he knew was going to be even later than 11 or 12, after our original 7:30 time.
I'm pretty surprised that you would complain to us about the loss of this special Project Chaos episode, and about our reaction to it, when it was clearly their fault. When we set up an interview, we expect to take first priority. There is simply no excuse for forgetting the interview, or agreeing to babysit someone at the last minute. And neither of the two that originally promised to be there made any effort to reschedule.
Still, as we said, the Project Chaos stuff was only a catalyst for our decision to go on break. There are many good reasons to do so.
I understand the unreliability of the project staff (and I see your reasons for it), but this is still simply penalising the popularity for both the project *and* the podcast. Besides, Hadyn didn't get a chance to see his mail until today so please don't see him as ignorant.
But I can see what's happened. I just hope it hasn't robbed the project of any kind of "special" mention per se, but I hope the break will still give you time to clear things out after what came to happen. I'm sorry if I caused a fuss over nothing.
(and I suppose my voicemail from last week will be deleted too; it'll be too out of date to keep by the next actual VGDJ episode... oh well.)

I received the envelope today, but the button had escaped its clutches. I did receive a letter from zircon, though, saying how he was madly in love with me and wanted to run away to Bali. *lol* Just kidding! It wasn't even him that wrote mine out.

I have to be honest here, even though those two are friends to me: I'm not really surprised. :P
A break will be a good thing for VGDJ, I think: A fresh start in a month or two may be just the thing to make the show even better. Sure, we're without VGDJ for awhile, but when it returns it'll be almost like a shiny brand-new show! ;)

I got my button last night. The button itself is great. I also appreciate the art on the back of the envelope. I don't have a scanner so I can't put it online, but it was a couple stick people illustrating the pronunciation of my name (Can-toss). That was funny enough, but it was cool to see Pixietricks paying attention to a relatively unimportant comment (made after they mispronounced my name on the episode talking about the winners of the video game music promotion contest) from a relatively new OCR member. It was just another reminder that Zircon and Pixietricks are doing this for a community of people they care about, unlike most other podcasts that are informative but detatched from the listeners. Kudos!

Got mine today, few little things about it:
-Torn envelope, but it wasn't empty, luckily. The tear was a little too small for the button to make its escape
-As others have said [those who DID successfully get one], it's so friggin' cute. All tiny and stuff. aww
-Zircon's handwriting it pretty awful. Just goes to show bear + writing utensil makes for horrid penmanship
That's about it. Though I feel a little ripped off, while Kanthos got art on his envelope, and I got a "KEEP LISTENING ^___^".
But I'm still better off than a lot of people, I suppose, since my button was present and intact. So...I guess I can't complain. Thanks guys.

They do sell smaller ones, you could probably get a 50-pack for a couple of bucks (probably not much more than regular envelopes would've cost). Or CD-mailers, although those are a bit big and more expensive.

Happy and Sad
Happy: I was notified that I received an envelope from a Jill Goldin.
Sad: I was notified that the envelope I received from Jill Goldin...was slit at the edge and was empty.
Thanks though, I'll save the envelope so I can say that someone did in fact try to send me something. That alone makes me feel special. Enjoy your holidays, and hope to hear a new show soon.

Alieo: I dunno if we will. We won't need to do another survey for quite some time, because it would probably give us the same results. But we often have contents and prizes on the show, so you could still win something.
And argh, it seems like about a third of you received empty envelopes! So sorry... We had no idea there was a thickness rule for these things. I've always thought it was just weight that was taken into account. :(

*shrugs* I don't know if it matters, but ever since VGDJ went on hiatus, I've felt honestly estranged and segregated from the OCR community.
I know its mostly my own damn fault, but VGDJ was the small bit of thread that helped pull me closer to everything that goes on here at OCR. Joining a new community is always a difficult thing to do, and although I've been hanging out at OCR since waaaaay back when it began, I'm not a big forum-type guy, and don't post all that often about stuff (I didn't even make a forum account until a handful of months ago, and again that was, in a big part, VGDJ's doing).
I try to listen to other podcasts, but I really enjoyed VGDJ a reat deal morethan any others that I subscribe to (though to be honest, Zircon and Pixietricks are a lot less entertaining when I can see them... Might just be because it clashes with my overworked imagination. Luckily videocasts are rare.)
I just felt like I needed to post somewhere and let others know how I feel. I look forward to the return of VGDJ, and hope that things continue smoothly here at OCR. I love you all.

Hey everyone.
I have some bad news to report to everyone. Some of you may have seen this coming, and others, perhaps not, but here it is: I'm leaving VGDJ. And because pixietricks does not want to find another cohost, this means that our run with this podcast is now over. There is not a complex set of reasons behind this, unlike why we both took a break. Simply put, while I had a lot of fun in the ~6 months I spent as a cohost, the show has never been my highest priority compared to my relationship with Jill, school, or my endeavors as a musician trying to make a career out of his work. In particular, since I plan on being self-employed by the end of college, I feel like I must really focus myself on earning a sizable salary from music. And, unfortunately, I can't maintain enthusiasm for doing the show while these other things are on my plate.
I want to emphasize that this was not Jill's decision but mine. She was ready and willing to continue, and had already gotten stuff together for Magfest - a mixer and mics to record our panel, a logo for a business card to hand out at the festival to give to ReMixers, a new plan for integrating the podcast with the site, and other things like that. And I wish I was able to come to a decision about this before she spent her own time working on developing the show further, but I suppose it was not until today that I realized there was no point in me continuing if I could not really put my full effort into doing it. It wouldn't be fair to you, the listeners, nor would it be fair to Jill, who has really been the driving force behind VGDJ ever since she first got involved.
So... I am sorry to everyone that this came suddenly, and I'm sorry that because of my decision the show has to stop. I wish it could have come at a different time, or that my career didn't require exorbitant amounts of time and energy to truly develop. I will still be on OCR judging mixes and posting. I'll still be writing tutorials. I'll still listen to and comment on WIPs, go to meetups, and idle on IRC. I had a blast hosting the show with Jill, and we put out some really great material... from interviews, to VGL, Otakon, the meetups, Flow Basket, crazy stingers, and everything in between.
Peace, and I hope you guys can still be cool with me.
ps. Jill won't be looking for a new cohost, nor will anybody be replacing us.

I'm really sad to hear this. I really admire you two, I've really enjoyed the show in your hands.
I hope everything turns out okay for you two, that you find great success. You really mean a lot to me (it's so weird to say that, I don't even know if you know I exist).
I'm really going to miss VGDJ. Thank you for everything that you made it.
Why will no one replace you two? After all, you guys didn't even create the show. Shouldn't it be passed on to someone as it was passed on to you two?
BigBoss
01-03-2007, 11:31 PM
uh why does the show have to end
:P
... :(
...I knew it!
... :( !
Sorry about that, outpouring of all kinds of emotions.
OK...
First off, let me say that this is your two's decision and if it's come to this, it's come to this. He has his life, she has her life, they have their life, and that's cool (I can only imagine how hard it must be to be not only a struggling musician but a struggling electronic musician).
Pixietricks really put her own stamp on the show these past 10 (well... 9) months and really made it her own, literally (dedicating time, energy and monies) and figuratively (you can hear her style all over it). I've been listening since Episode 10, even before her first guest appearance under Rayza, and I can't imagine anyone else as host anymore.
But...
ps. Jill won't be looking for a new cohost, nor will anybody be replacing us.
What makes you say that? Excuse me for being frank and going out on a limb, but for all the wonderful things you both have done, VGDJ is no more yours than it was Rayza's and Aurora's. We basically had to track them down and all but hijack it (http://www.ocremix.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=58435&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=1515), but the show went on.
Even though you did get the approval of the former hosts (http://www.ocremix.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=58435&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=1600), the need is still out there.
Even if it's just going back to its roots of a one-stop-shop for OCR coverage, it would be welcome. We do have a chronic problem with shortages of talent with time, don't we?

I don't find this acceptable at all. I understand the ownership you feel over the podcast now, the efforts and hard work you've put into the show, but the point of VGDJ was to evolve, just as the community does, and the hard work would lay to waste if it were to die now. It was not meant to create stars, it was not meant to be owned. It was meant as a community service, and as a promotion of the video game music appreciation movement.
Though it was my own and Rayza's idea to start something of this nature, it was always in our plan for the show to be passed on, and not have ownership. It was definitely hard to let the show go, but that was not the point... it was never about me, or Rayza. It was about the community. Hence us delegating tasks to people within the community, and hence the current hosts that VGDJ now has.
If Pixie doesn't feel that anyone else is good enough to host the show with her other than Zircon, then those who are willing and able to pick up where Zircon and Pixie left off, should, just as Rayza and I passed on the show when we could no longer take it on. I honestly believe that it is not in Zircon's or Pixie's place to decide what the future (or lack thereof) of VGDJ will be. I understand that you (pixie and zircon) are upset about not being able to carry on with it, but that shouldn't stop anyone else from doing so.
Please do not take this as an attack. We (all vgdj enthusiasts) are grateful for your service and how you've brought VGDJ to a whole new level since you've taken over. You've created a show people look forward to downloading, you've helped bring a community together. There is no reason why this ideal should die now. Take your accomplishments and let others be of service to OCR and to the VGDJ listeners.
I hope you seriously consider this recommendation.

Hey, understandable concerns... though the reason I put that in was mainly because we just didn't want to be bombarded with "who's the next host" or "can I do a radio show to replace VGDJ" or "can I be the next host". That kind of stuff. As you can imagine that is the absolute last kind of stuff we wanted to hear - especially pixie since she was still ready to continue. I wouldn't say we've locked in the future just yet.

Just read the message over at VGDJ. Here's my post from there:
"This is sad news, indeed. Very shocking, too. To tell you the truth I did not see this coming...
I won't hold anything against both of you. However, I was really looking forward to one last "hurrah"...a swan-song if you will..in order to give this excellent project the send-off it deserves. Hopefully the stuff you're recording in MAGfest won't go to waste...
You guys had an excellent run. You've influenced a lot of people that videogame music isn't just a fling by promoting OCR as much as possible. Nothing you did went to waste and I hope that reasons you stated in the hiatus post didn't affect this cancellation. Plus, it's possible some people out there who will pick up your torch and light the way for a new podcast project seperate from the VGDJ one.
Good luck to both of you. Your voices, enthusiasm, humor, and chemistry shall be missed."
After reading through Aurora's post, I see that it's a possibility that this podcast continues with new hosts. That's some good news, at least. I can understand why Zircon put that there, especially since he pasted the very same post on the VGDJ site. I still highly recommend "the swan-song" thing as Pixie and Zircon's last podcast. I really don't like to see them pull out ever so suddenly without giving us one last run. :)

The difference right now is that nobody else is currently trained in the technical process of recording/editing/hosting etc- and believe me guys, it is NOT an easy task. When thewingless and I officially stepped on board, I had already worked with Rayza on a whole slew of shows.
I know it's tempting for some of you guys to say, "Hey! Need a host? Sure, I'm all for it!" but it's not as simple as that. I'd really like to find someone who is equally enthusiastic as me, and who will be able to commit the time and effort. It's been very hard switching from Rayza to Wingless to zircon, and I'm not completely optimistic that I'll find somebody as qualified as them, who understands the responsibility.
I don't think it's in OCR's best interest to rush the replacement process, either. If VGDJ continues, I would like to continue with it. As zircon already pointed out, up until this afternoon I was busily planning for all the Magfest recordings and interviews. Still, it puts a lot of pressure on me if you guys start talking about who might be qualified. It could take considerable time to find someone who is, and teach them everything. I don't know if I'm ready to move on like that quite yet, so please respect this and be patient. It would not be possible for two completely new people to take up the show if they used the current format and webspace.

[63:25] Name That Tune! What do you do when you have a full room of video game music nerds from four different communities? Why, pit them against each other in a battle of nostalgia to see who can recognize the most VG tunes. The competitors were virt (VGMix), Rama (ThaSauce/OCR), JoeCam (OneUp Studios), and Paragon (The Shizz) and while it was close, virt managed to edge 'em out. Too bad no one got that Shining Force track except SnappleMan.

Serious props to Snapple, and slaps for the rest of everyone who was at MAGFest. Shining Force should be part of the video game music curriculum for everyone, as well as the straight video game curriculum because it's a sexy, sexy series.
Also, God bless VGDJ.

Man guys, this last episode was beautiful. Playing "Deliverance of the Heart" at the end was awesome. Good luck with your lives and I still hope to see ya'll around OCR.
THE SPIRIT OF VGDJ WILL LIVE ON!!!
Why only the spirit? The show was around before zirc and pixie, and there isn't any particular reason it can't be around again someday.

So…seeing as how you two have lives now (which is a WONDERFULL THING! Be happy and all that), but some of us (like me) have nothing much to do…except plot the continuation of our favorite podcast. Now, I don’t expect this to be a walk in the park, and I don’t think anyone is under that impression. Setting up, recording, editing, compression and posting are all essential and tricky parts of the creation of a stellar podcast. However, I know that there are many smart, talented, enthusiastic people that…well, may want to help keep this podcast alive. Now, I have ideas, and others may have ideas, and we need ideas, but we also need people willing to work hard as best they can, if we want to try to keep the same kind of quality that past episodes have enjoyed. Will we reach that point? Not at first, and not for a good bit. But I have faith that the community who has spent so long listening, laughing, and loving this podcast can find the people, the time, and the passion to continue this labor of love. So…am the only one willing to learn and work to continue this?

True, but the difference there was that there were smooth transitions from host to host. Rayza was able to train Jill for many a show before he stepped down, and by that time, she could basically do it herself and train other people (eg. me). Right now, we're BOTH stepping down, so anyone new wouldn't have a clue w/o us training them (which I don't think we have time to do). All of this has been explained already, though, and ultimately (as we said on the show itself) the future is still uncertain. There's always the possibility of Larry picking up an official OCR show again, even in podcast form, though it might not be VGDJ in our format. That's one example.

Though it doesn't strike me as particularly likely, someone else COULD train the new hosts, such as Rayza, Aurora, or even a certain lack-of-wang-type-person, WHO SHALL REMAIN NAMELESS. AND ALSO WANGLESS.. Like I said, hardly likely, but certainly not an impossibility.

Just for the purposes of discussion...I was thinking, maybe a panel format would be a future option for VGDJ 3.0, kinda like with TWiT (http://www.twit.tv/twit), or The HotSpot (http://www.gamespot.com/misc/podcast-hub/index.html). But I know nothing about making a podcast, so that may be a more complicated option that's not worth it...
Just a thought.
As for the final ep of VGDJ 2.5, I think I'll save it for tomorrow, so I can dedicate myself to actually paying the attention it deserves.

I just listened to the last episode and I just wanted to say how awesome it was. Magfest was hilarious, with the medleys, Larry, and the "superbadass" genre. Debeerguy's response had me laughing so much (He sounds like Toejam from TJ&E3). It was really fun to listen to, and I'll miss it.
Also, your mix is incredible. Anxious Heart has always been my favourite song from my favourite game, maybe even my favourite peice of music full stop, and you guys nailed it. Really amazing stuff.
I really do hope to hear more from you guys, even just little bits every now ang again.

I for one would love to have a Larrry Oji show again, I miss his vg frequency a great deal. Beyond that, VGDJ should live on, there's no reason somebody else couldn't start something up from the bottom up.

Guys, I really think it would be beneficial if you could try accept the fact that VGDJ as "VGDJ" has come to an end. There's always the possibility of zircon and I releasing something special from time to time, but we would appreciate if you turned your discussion into "What could we do to create a new podcast?" not "What could we do to change VGDJ?" It is wonderful and flattering to see all your enthusiasm, but you must understand that we can't force a new era of VGDJ; there is no natural way to do it, and it would require a ton of effort on the part of zircon and myself. The show only continued before because I served as a link to the next generation. We were missing only half the hosting team when Rayza left, and I knew how to do everything, so it seemed (more or less) natural that the podcast go on.
I think the idea of a "panel" podcast, as Black Mage put it, is a really neat possibility for something new. Kinda like ThaSauce, right? Rama would be a great person to head up something like that, with his experience and knowledge of the community. I hope that DrumUltimA and Cyan_Ide would be interested as well, because I'm sure they'd have a lot to offer. XD
In any case, we would both appreciate it if everyone could try to keep the discussion in here relevant to our last episode. If you'd like to discuss possibilities for a new show, by all means, start a new thread! It's just a little disheartening to see our last efforts get overshadowed by this sort of talk, when we have already explained our intentions. ^_~

It makes me sad that this is the last official episode. But, I'm glad that you guys knew when it was time to let it go. I would've rather it gone out like a bang (as I'm sure it did, just finished downloading) then to have you guys sacrificing your time and energy to do something that would be difficult to do with your current schedules.
Me salute you.
(And dang it. The user bar is staying. You can't make me get rid of it!)
Edit: I was gonna ask, are you guys ever gonna release the VGDJ theme? I think that'd be fun to have on my computer!

Yeah. that'd be cool.

Well folks, I have a small contribution to make on this day in history for VGDJ.
As some of you know, I was working on a VGDJ Desktop Wallpaper Pack II. But under recent circumstances I felt it was appropriate to release the best ones I had cooked up now, in respect of such a fine contribution to the remixing community and for those who gave support of it.

and cuz we love the hosts so much

The rest of the wallpapers were just game based wallpapers to compliment the pack and will be released some time in the near future on deviantart.com, but for now, I'll leave ya with these few gems.
cheers.

Yeah, Larry's show was great. I'm hoping we see him host a show again some time in the future.
As for the podcast, I'm sure there are other knowledgeable people in the community sufficiently skilled in public speaking and editing to host. If you consider the marketing aspect, I imagine it'd be generally unwise to let the brand name "VGDJ" and the associated internet domain go to waste.
