Yeh this week Aurora had her mic volume up louder than usual PLUS I didn't get to compress it properly before I had the big PC crash of '05.. All she had was the rough cut which I send to her early so she can get started on the show notes. It was actually Aurora that edited the whole show so congrats to her for putting it together at all. Hopefully I can recover something from this cuz theres a bunch of music due for school plus that Jim Powers mix I started and was liking, then bad tings a gwan :( :(

Hopefully 006 will get us back on track and smooth sailing forever..

I didn't really notice much of a difference sound-wise, but maybe that's because you were having mic issues -- either the extra bitstream compensated for it, or you really aren't gaining much by encoding higher. I know one thing you can do is encode as Ogg Vorbis (http://www.vorbis.com/) (Wikipedia entry (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vorbis)); that format is inherently variable-bitrate and tends to do just as well as MP3 with a slightly lower filesize at similar quality settings. An Ogg Vorbis stream with a nominal bitrate of ~64kbps (q0) or ~80kbps (q1) should suit your needs just fine. I realize this can be a bit technical if you're not familiar with Ogg Vorbis, but the crew at Hydrogen Audio (http://www.hydrogenaudio.org) would be able to help with that. :)

Edit: Of course, if people are actually putting this on iPods or other portable media players. That's the big downside. So if you want to sick with MP3, I think 96kpbs (either CBR or VBR) should do fine.

Yeah, I was posting my comment on VGDJ when I realized that. :P

I dont' have much experience with AAC, myself. Never really did much beyond the usual suspects (MP3, Ogg Vorbis, Musepak).

iTunes is really easy with it. Just add the original WAV file to the library, right-click it and select "Convert to AAC". Only requirement is that you've set up the AAC converter(Edit > Preferences > Importing) and selected it as import device. Can also be used for ripping CDs, and will convert any file iTunes can play back, including MIDI files.

Also, iPods have no problem with MP3, WAV, AAC, AIFF, Apple Lossless and a special Audiobook file format.

For the best compatibility, I'd say stick to MP3.

Yeah, stick with mp3, even though ogg is better than mp3, and even aac (debatably in general, but certainly for this purpose it's the case). I'm all for supporting ogg, but not at the cost of listeners.

Now I would like to switch the conversation to why they went with the name Podcast and not showcast to avoid confusion, and why the iPod doesn't support ogg. not being serious here, unless you want to start a new thread

Edit: Rayza, you said your hard drive has no master boot record? If that's the case, you should just be able to boot up on another drive (or a boot disc) and then grab the contents of that drive. That's assuming you don't have a data copy of your drive already.

Edit: Rayza, you said your hard drive has no master boot record? If that's the case, you should just be able to boot up on another drive (or a boot disc) and then grab the contents of that drive. That's assuming you don't have a data copy of your drive already.

Turn on SMART in your BIOS and see what it has to say. Also, support.microsoft.com doesn't show anything useful for the CA code. They've got quite a few tips on fixing issues, so check the error code.

Rayza, if Windows is crashing on you, you might want to consider creating a Knoppix Live-CD disc if you're daring. It will be able to copy your data if you don't have a backup. If you just want to restore your OS, then you can probably do that in Knoppix with some bootloading configuration but I hesitate to recommend that option since it requires a lot of knowledge of bootloading and how your system's set up.

So just to keep it consistant, iTunes 4.9 has been released for both the mac and windows... 4.9 includes a podcast directory via the iTunes Music Store (iTMS) and the ability to subscribe and keep track of podcasts right in iTunes... its a cool feature if a) it worked properly and b) it included more indy podcasts like ours or at least gave us the heads up that there would need to be more tags included in the feed in order to make it iTunes compliant...anyways...


I submitted our feed 2 days ago... it still hasn't shown up in the directory... hopefully it will appear soon. It would be great advertisement if it did eventually make it in there.

Rayza and I have been talking about getting a way for people to leave us audio comments... some podcasts have dedicated phone lines set up either through voip or whathaveyou to get the recorded listener feedback. Another thing we were thinking about is having requests come in from our listeners... maybe switch up the Russian ReMix Roulette segment with a request or something.

ANYWAYS. With Audio comments, we can just put them right in the show and integrate is as part of our show. You can always generate an MP3 of yourself asking question/making request/giving feedback and send it to us at our email (vgdjpodcast@gmail.com)... but if you can't do that, then there's another way!

The Gizmo Project (http://www.gizmoproject.com/) is a Skype-like program that allows you to leave audio messages to whomever you'd like if they are not online. The recipient will get an email with your recorded message! This program is cross platform and seems to work quite well on OS X and Win (haven't tried it on 'Nix yet)... but anways, you could use this service to send us your audio comment.

Aurora forgot to mention some points.

Gizmo is still in beta and is not the most intuitive program. After you've added the "VGDJ" account to your Gizmo list, just double click the name to start the call. It should ring a few times then play a standard "Leave a message" type voice (which I wish we could customize). Leave your message but watch the call counter and try not to go much over 1:30 at most or else it cuts off. Somewhere before 2 minutes anyway.

It may also be good to include your email address or something in the voicemail if you want us to get back to you.

Yeh I think next time we should do a few test runs. I'll hear you fine but when you're recording is where the problem lies. We'll find a good spot and make a note of it. Using a notepad and pen, or crayon.

Also some of it may be my fault, I still haven't gotten compression of everything properly. Need to spend more time on that and learn better techniques. Right now I'm just squashing the shit out of everyones voices so I'm not sure if thats what I should be doing, just don't want them to be too quiet then this loud music burst comes in from the ReMix clips.

Anyhow, once we're through a dozen or so I think we should get on the right track.

Just a note to add to this... if you are listening to our podcast and you think we've missed something, this is exactly what we would like you do to. If you know that an event is coming up or your projects are moving up in the world or whathaveyou, please let us know in the various forms of communication we provide. We can't catch everything and the rama report sometimes doesn't get everything either, so if you'd like us to mention something that's upcoming, please lets us know before THURSDAYS (i think everyone knows this now though) as Rayza has indicated...

I guess I just wanted to make that official as in we do like getting material from people... its makes the podcast more of a community effort and its fun.

Woohoo! I've been gone a while--I need say that ep 004 was MARVELOUS and that the DJP interview was GREAT!

And ep 008...yes! Loved the show. I'm glad that you guys brought in the basics of OCR again. Next time you do that, mention what happens when someone "reinterprets" a video game song. Good reviews, despite nobody sending you clips.

On that note, I have two things to say to all remixers, current and to-be:

1. Send VGDJ a clip when they ask for one! Your flipping voice on the radio about your song! Shit!

2. Make it concise. I'm sorry, I get a little tired after 5 minutes of rambling.

On the subject of Rama, his singing to the melody of "Kingdom Trial" was both original and hi-freakin'-larious. And he should stop recording in his bathroom! Get some padding, or something, cause the Rama Report sounds like I'm playing raquet ball.

Just a note in reference to this: Like we said in the beginning we can't catch everything that's going on... so make sure if you have stuff going on you think is noteworthy you tell us before thursday if you want it in the next episode (as in, if you want it in 009, tell us before this thursday... OCR idol will be mentioned in 009) A lot of this stuff is usually covered in the Rama Report and Rayza and I don't wanna step on Rama's toes too much (thought its not like he produces consistently :D)

Yeah, it was a good show. The "lazy days" feel was prevalent, but it worked well, in fact.

DarkeSword, while your clip sounded too scripted for my taste, it had a distinct advantage over every other clip that I've heard on VGDJ (perhaps excepting Jivemaster's subsequent clip):

That is currently the show's greatest weakness, especially for attracting new people to the show and to OCR in general. Nobody wants to hear seven minutes of you defending your choices for the mix against criticism. Few people want very technical and comprehensive details about the production of your mix.

The clips from DarkeSword and Jivemaster were good role models, I think. They were concise, engaging, and say a lot of worthwhile stuff for the time they take to say it. Please, more clips like this. [/rant]

Anyway, I enjoyed the show despite your feeling that there was too little to talk about (or abowoot...sorry). Rayza, I liked your subtle hint at the end for Rama to start recording in a larger room with the door closed. I'm glad that you mentioned that DJP sent that one mix right on through past the judges--it's important to mention things like that, since they don't happen very often. You might want to mention Israfel's departure from the Judges Panel next time. Okay, that's all for now. Good work, I love you guys, keep on trucking.

Linearity makes a good point. Though Shariq's more recent clip did sound rather rehearsed, it was short and sweet. And yeah, most people aren't gonna care a lot about all the technical details. I didn't really think of it before because I enjoy the show despite the longer parts. It all depends on where you come from though. Personally if it were a show all about remixing techniques and technical shit I'd be all ears, but of course no one else would care. So I think a little mix here and there is all good, as long as its short. For this show tycho gave me 9 minutes of him talking.. Obviously I'm not gonna play that so I just cut out the most relevant-ish stuff and played that instead..
