I didn't notice this when I was listening, but you guys should say the dates for the week you're covering. When you say, "This is VGDJ show #14," you should follow it up with "for the week of august 15th - 21st."

It helps when listening to older shows.

You know what would be great? Some free money! That & maybe making a tracklisting for the background songs used in the shows. You know, so that in case we like 'em, we know which songs to... "acquire." Yeah, that's the ticket.

I will be the first to admit that I was completely over reacting for dramatic purposes... and that if you recall my 'review' of this song, I did appreciate its source and the resulting mix as being a very difficult thing to pull off well. If anyone was going to do it, Mazedude was definitely the one for the job... and so.

Opinionated, or just tactless?
You decide.

Though I would like to hear another version that's a little easier on the ears. While weird, dissonant (way more than the original), and widely unaccessible, it was definitely groovy.

VGDJ ReMix OUR INTRO CONTEST

Okay so here's the deal... we thought it would be fun to put out a little contest (though its not really a contest REALLY...) to the wonderful community of musicians listening to our show. We're opening up the doors to people interested in creating or remixing the intro to our show....

see,
we're like... working on a new intro (hopefully for show 20) cuz although our first and only original VGDJ intro kicks mega ass (because Rayza is a Masta), we thought it would be a cool change... but we ALSO thought (wow look at ALL this thinking) in the meantime...there's like 4 episodes we could open up to people to provide us with a ReMix (or original) of an intro for us that we would play on 016 to 019, and for any random show we feel like after the fact.... so ya.

Here are the GUIDELINES:
1) It must have "VEE GEE DEE JAY" said in it somewhere
2) Must be :45 seconds MAX
3) Can use clips from old shows.

That's it! So if you wanna get a mix on our show, here's your chance :D (or just get DJP off his fat ass and judge your mix already, geezuz)

(ikid :D)

Okay so we hope this will be fun and we get entries...yah? yah.

OKAY BYE!

With an okay (and permission) from Aurora I just installed an alternative to get the the "old" VGDJ shows and save the VGDJ crew a lot of Bandwidth. In short and simple words:

 VGDJ IS NOW AVAILABLE AS TORRENT!!!

In the same style as you could (and can still) get the old VG Frequency and Crimson Moon shows, you can now get "VGDJ". In packs of 10 episodes (EP001 to EP010), 5 episodes (EP011 to EP015) and each new episode as seperate torrent. Included are each specific "shownotes" - however don't be scared off of the german filenamings (Datein instead of Files), the HTML files still work fine.

INFO FOR LEECHERS AND SEEDERS
Well not only is it important to keep the seeds up as long as possible, but there's another thing. Aurora and I decided to unify the files ID3v2 tag technically. The first 6 episodes from VGDJ weren't properly tagged - that is fixed now. I'm asking you however not to seed your already downloaded files but get the new ones "again" and seed them. This ensures that no bugs occour while downloading.

AZUREUS USERS, LISTEN UP:
I often get the info that Azureus users can't load the files or can't even connect. That's not a flaw on my side but a setting fault in Azureus. Connecting to each other is sometimes prohibited. Please check that. Also if you're behind a firewall, open the proper ports for your specific torrent tool. But I guess you know that already. ;)

 HOW TO GET THE FILES
You can get all VGDJ episodes so far (along with VG Frequency and Crimson Moon) here:
www.studio-compyfox.de/torrent

Enjoy.

Navi

Compy, when you direct the torrent to the location where you already have the mp3 files, it should update and retag them instead of you having to redownload. we did that with DSoP.

However, did you reencode or anything? My torrent isn't recognizing a couple of the files (ie: starting the dl from 0% as opposed to 98%)

Nope, didn't reencode anything. Just retagged them. So it's you who only has 35% or so and it's not loading anymore.

Simply reload it again. Won't hurt, it's only a bit over 180MB.

You guys seriously need to limit the length of the clips you have the remixers send in. Some of these guys just love to talk. :(

*coughDarkeSwordINterview*

Seriously, though... 3 minutes may be a bit long. We just want everyone to get a fair amount of time to discuss their mix, as well as pimp out some of their original stuff.

If we can get people listening purchasing independant music, I think that's wonderful.

Well my interview was an interview; my clip later was pretty short. ;)

Also, I understand that you guys want mixers to be able to talk about their stuff, but sometimes the ratio of talking about the mix to the actual mix playing is really disproportionate. I listen to a guy talk for like...3 minutes about his mix, but I only get to hear 30 seconds of it. I know that I'm supposed to check it out here, but I find myself just fast forwarding through a lot of comments.

Alright, so should we limit the remixer clips down to 2 minutes or increase the song preview up from 1 minute? Both you say??

Also if one of the remixers happens to be a favorite of yours, you probably want to get as much extra info as you can. I think 2:30 or under could be reasonable..

Also: Thanks a lot CompyFox for the torrents. What was incorrectly tagged in the first 6? I thought they were all consistant..

That's funny:
I tried to give as much insight as I could think of, and still came in under a minute and a half. 'Course, I wasn't addressing comments, pimping my website, upcoming projects, etc. I expect we should just talk about the tune, then split.
Incidentally, I sound weird to myself, mostly because BOTH my cheapo mics died on me when I was ready to talk, and I ended up with my mouth practically shoved into my headphones, eNUNciAting in order to get my clip done. I need to get my studio mic back from my co-worker.

Well we tried doing a live version of VGDJ tonight. More like a technical test really, didn't have so much to do with VGDJ overall. We did talk with Hemopheliac and debeerguy007 about certain things. It did work, but it was really quite boring. We need more structure if we are gonna do this on a regular basis. Needs a lot of tweaking too.. Anyhow, check it out if you're interested in 70 minutes of fuckery..

I don't mind listening to the remixers. After all, I can download the song from OCR. I cannot just listen to remixers. However, people are generally right that brevity is important. It's been mentioned before that Darkesword's clip for his Megaman X song was one of the stronger clips because he kept to the point and wasn't all technobabbly.

I'm just glad I got my interview in before this time-cutting session began. All that talk about "hoo hoo"s almost turned your family friendly show into something quite a bit more PG-13 rated. ;)

Compyfox
09-07-2005, 07:26 PM
Well personally I'd say:
Expand the show.

In different ways:
1) The songs a tad longer. Though that's mostly OCR Material that we can hear over and over (it's not VGF after all)

2) Due to the expansion you have a tad more time doing "interactive interviews", more in the news section, etc. Clips from mixer swith 2min are fine with me unless the go all about "yeah I'm this and that great".

If the filesize get's too big after that, I'd recommend using mp3pro for that purpose. As Larry did with his recordings, same on my side with Crimson Moon.

BTW:
Didn't listen to your liveshow yet, but if you're planning to do that, you have the equipment and you keep up the preasure, I'll surely listen in (if it's the right time for me). As long as you keep down the prank calls (though if you do it Mondays, you run in trouble with "Nitro Game Injection" from KyleJCrib).

Yeh we haven't really decided what to do on a live show front yet. It was just a test to see if it was at all possible. The calls would have to be through Skype as well, we're not equiped for real calls.

As for making the news section longer, we just report on anything we find. We don't make it shorter on purpose, sometimes theres just nothing much going on that we know about. <--- Key phrase. If theres something OCR related that we should know, either email us with text or a voice recording or use the 1-800 line. It's hard to catch everthing, but we do try to get the major stuff reported.

Compyfox
09-07-2005, 10:41 PM
Okay this'd start a total flame war now, but why stick to OCR only, even if it's an "official podcast show"? Okay the Rama-Report is still there, but OCR is truely not the only remixing community.

Smoke
09-07-2005, 11:11 PM
I think it'd make for very long show episodes if every single addition to every single remix site out there was reviewed, with a clip from both the remixer and the song.

Besides, it's the official OCR podcast ;).

Compyfox
09-07-2005, 11:18 PM
Well then we all shouldn't have listened to VG Frequency (record holder with over 510min of a single show, without pre and aftershow), NGI, Crimson Moon, Fusion Radio or whatever is out there.

Aurora
09-07-2005, 11:25 PM
VGDJ started out as OC Remix. It will stay OC ReMix. We have NOTHING against the other remixing communities. IN fact, just last episode, we pimped a podcast all about KWED.

If VGMix wants to have a podcast... let them have a podcast, and we'll most likely pimp them. The point is not to compete. the point is to get the idea out to people that this music is amazing and that it deserves a larger audience, one that is sure to appreciate teh source of the material being presented here.

Once one learns of OCReMix...it doesn't take them long to find out about the other communities.

We also focus on OCReMix for two MAIN reasons: Standards, and Unbiased music selection. The songs are judged by a panel of our peers (along with being quality controlled). We also don't pick what we play. The community decides, and the die decides. that's about it.

I like the fact that we have something like this to call our own. I don't think it's elitist or close-minded. I see it as more focused on something related to our side of the community. That's the distinction.

Yeah, man... What's wrong with having a podcast to call our own? If people wanna stay posted with whatever's going on in the other communities, that's what ThaSauce is for. OCR is a great community, and it deserves some private attention. I don't see why people have to turn everything into a pissing contest. :P

Hey guys, I've got some more podcast-related news...
Winamp 5.1 now supports Podcasts!
http://img359.imageshack.us/img359/5348/winamppodcast5pi.th.gif
click thumbnail to enlarge (http://img359.imageshack.us/my.php?image=winamppodcast5pi.gif)
This new feature, called 'SHOUTcast Wire', is accessable through the Library. It also has a 'Discover' feature, which allows you to browse and search through an index of podcasts. VGDJ isn't there... (and I don't see an 'add podcast' feature) ...yet.
However, you can still easily add the RSS Feed info in the 'Subscriptions' area.
So... yeah, good news for winamp users.

Keep up the good work! I've already voted once this month, and now that school's started up again, expect another vote from me!

Compyfox

oh yeah, the same happens as it happend with VGF at that day. First they snag the pages dead, then they scream that the bandwidth was used up and the files are gone. Then there is a sollution called "Torrent", then they're all high and stuff and start snaggin' like an outta control wildfire. And short after they got "their stuff", they vanish again and think "helping? me?! seeding?! WTF is that?! I gotz muh sheit!"

Yeah yeah... sad but true. Folks, seriously now. Torrents can only live on from those who're willing to share. If you don't want to share, fine with me. I try to keep the torrents up till sunday, then I drop them again if you're not interested.

Same with VGF. I was a long time the only seeder though. Nobody wanted the shows. And then if you're not there, have other stuff to do, have uploads to clients or your PC is simply out (cause it runs 24/7 anyway), then someone comes from behind, stabs you with a +9 PM and screams at you "OMGWTFS33DzPLz!". And if you don't act imediately in the next 10 minutes there's another +12 PM bonus stab with "OMG j00're a f4g!", etc.

Shoutout to everyone:
PLEASE HELP OUT SEEDING VGDJ
(and of course the other shows too if you're able to do so)

You're not only helping Aurora and Rayza save a ton of bandwidth cost, you also help others getting the show(s) which results that others might help you again if you miss something. I can't seed all the time (not to mention that my upload bandwidth is limited), even if it's my torrent tracker. If it doesn't run by itself, I don't really see the urge to help "you" out anymore - which is only logical.

Same harsh words as with VG Frequency. So please think about it.

Zarggg
09-10-2005, 09:16 PM
Again: Compyfox, I would gladly seed, but (1) I don't have the EXACT files needed in order to seed your torrent and (2) there aren't enough existing seeds to get those files.

Unless my understanding of BitTorrent is completely messed up, there's no way I could just download the files Rayza already hosts in order to seed.

Catch 22. :(

Edit: Okay, I'm trying again, and this time I'm getting something. I'll let it run to see if I can get the whole thing. If I do, I'll seed as often as I can. (I'm already seeding OCR's torrents, so don't expect impressive upload rates. :P)

Hm, I get to be the first to comment on 017. Woo?
Yeah, pixie, you did pretty good. 'Cept that "All Canadians sound the same" remark. For that, we MAY need to string you up. So..watch out.
But yeah, you sounded a little more timid than Aurora, but not like..."cowering in the corner" timid. Plus, you were there to laugh at Rayza's horrible pronounciation of the japanese names. Aurora's no better, so she doesn't laugh at him. Seems that pixie knows the score though ;)
Rayza: ElectroLYTIC Man. Not Electrolic. Tsk.
Aurora: Nice. REAL nice. Poor Jill.
pixie: MORE comments about Canadians? But..one of my friends DOES do the bottle display thing...so..uhm...shhhh.

One thing I've noticed about all the episodes...might just be the way my WinAmp is running, but it always says it's a little longer than it is. That is, if I'm actually watching the time, the show ends with anywhere from 3 to 9 seconds left. Just...an odd little thing, wondered if it's happening to other people too.

Anyways, good show, uhm...keep up the good...VGDJ'ing.

Hey, man thanks for answering.

I have iTunes but i'm a Podcast newb so i was just checking but i guess the update is automatic :P

I have a couple of suggestions:

1-Instead of just playing a bit of the two new chosen remixes every week, you could play all of it! Also instead of simply playing one of the songs in Russian Roulette you could play 2 or 3! or go crazy and play all 6! I just think more music would really improve the 'cast (short for podcast :P)! After all it is about a music site!

2- I think both of you should give a "review" of the 2 tunes chosen, instruments, sequences, the overall melody and how it differs from the original, whatever!
This would make the two chosen tunes part a lot more consistent!

I think these ideas improve the show, but if you dont wanna do them, then, you are a big "lazy butt!!" :D
Hehe, just kidding

Keep up the good work!!

Linkman-

Pics from the OCR Otakon meet-up can be found on page 12 of this thread (http://www.ocremix.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=61621&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0). ^_~

As for your suggestions, I hear where you're coming from- that you'd like more music etc. It's not my decision, so that's why I didn't comment before. But my general take is that if the show got much longer, people might not listen the whole way through. Plus, I think the goal has to do with getting people interested in the community as a whole. If we *tease* them with samples from the week's new mixes, they're more likely to go and listen/explore on their own.

Rayza/Aurora already give reviews on the new mixes, but perhaps people would find it more interesting if they were a little more detailed? Thing is, OCR already has a review system (first djpretzel, then anybody else can post their own thoughts). I wonder if maybe we could talk a bit about that this week... Hmmmm!

Just listened to ep 017, interesting.
Pretty cool to hear you on the Podcast Pixie.

Been awhile since I tuned it. Its fun to catch up.

CE
09-14-2005, 04:30 PM
Oh, right, no prob pixie... I was actually talking more to Rayza

Although i think you guys talking is fun because i know the community and the site, i just think that outsiders to the site wouldn't find it very appealing. No offense :D

"anyhoo" i think more music would actually get more people to OCRemix! i mean think about it...
If i were a newcomer i'd like more music on the show, THAT would make me come to OCR looking for my fave game or other things... Just an advice...

And of course, a review on VGDJ sounds a lot more official you know? Here is an idea, you could ask DJpretzel to tape a audioclip review of the 2 tunes of the week and get his review on the show! Make it more official sounding: "and now the creator of OCR will tell us what he thought of the tune you just heard! am i glad hes not a lazy butt!!"

And also, you could put the 2 weekly tunes closer to the end of the show and dangle the promise of it during the show like this: "dont forget we have our two chosen tunes along with DJP's review of them (or your own, your opinion counts too ) coming up at the end of the show so keep listening...and now Rayza is gonna tell us about HIS bathroom! (or something interestig like that to keep the flow of the show going)"

Well dont forget these are just suggestions from me, and i think the show is great, im not saying its bad its just some advice...Because i think that we (the community) being able to interact with the show and try to give suggestions to make it even better is what makes this Podcast so much fun! its a lot more interactive then a normal radioshow!!

Well i hope you had the patience to read all of THAT!
One more request:(and this is a personal request, not a suggestion...) Could you, if you adapt any of my ideas, mention my username (linkman25) during the next weeks show? i'd like to show it to my friend so he will freak out hehe...Oh, you could even do it if you didnt apply the changes to the show!! like this: "well this week at the forums, Linkman25 made some great suggestions for our show...unfortunatly we couldent apply any of them, but he doesnt take offense...hes a pretty cool guy!" Yeah say that... or not... im delusional hehe  :D

Well thanks for reading and gimme some feedback on this later!!

Alright, I'll reply to this, finally.

There are many reasons why we keep the music clips short. I'll run them down for you Linkman..

A) Time. We originally decided to keep this show between 30-40 minutes maximum. If we start playing full songs, there is less time for us to talk about anything else. Keep in mind that there are sometimes 4 new mixes a show. On average that would be about 15-20 minutes of music PLUS the random song. We like to keep it to this time because of the

B) Filesize. Yes, people are still using 56k modems. If our show starts hitting 30megs or so, a lot of users will be discouraged to even download it in the first place. I know a bunch of dialup users that don't even want to download our 16-18 meg shows now.

3) We are not a playlist show. There are plenty of shows that feature full songs, and lots of them. Thats not what we're intending to do. We try to get OCR in a weekly nutshell and let the users discover the rest. If you want shows that are more focused on music check out

The Remixatorium or the Super Koopa Troopa Show (both podcasts)
VGFrequency
Fusionradio
VGM (Starting soon)

and there are many others that I've probably missed. Check the thread about VGM Radio shows in this forum for the links to those.

I just never got the concept of playing music at 64kbps on our podcast when you can very well come to OCR and get the full bitrate version to play any time you want. We give you an idea of what the song is about, if you're interested, go get it! Theres just no need for another playlist show.

As for getting clips and reviews from DJP, he already does a great writeup for each mix. We'll mention this again, as pixie said. He's a busy guy and it would be highly doubtful that he could record 3-4 audio reviews every week. Hell, its tough getting Rama to talk for 2 minutes every week.

Hopefully I've touched on most of your points. In conclusion, we want a short show that allows people to keep up with whats going on at OCR and hopefully get new people interested. We pique their interest, and they come check out the Vibe+1. We actually got an email just today about this, so it seems like its working.

tl;dr

CE
09-14-2005, 05:24 PM
Oh, that makes sense...
Thanks a lot for answering Rayza... I see now, i wasn't aware of all those points you said and 15-20 mins music actually IS a lot for a 30-40 min show.

Oh well, i guess my suggestions phailed, but at least i got a well fundamented "reject" of those reviews and that is enough to make me happy! at least it was good to clear stuff up for upcoming people that try to make more suggestions :D !

One more thing... Could you do something about this: One more request:(and this is a personal request, not a suggestion...) Could you, if you adapt any of my ideas, mention my username (linkman25) during the next weeks show? i'd like to show it to my friend so he will freak out hehe...Oh, you could even do it if you didnt apply the changes to the show!! like this: "well this week at the forums, Linkman25 made some great suggestions for our show...unfortunatly we couldent apply any of them, but he doesnt take offense...hes a pretty cool guy!" Just wondering... i'd like to show THAT to my friend and it will probably get him to listen to VGDJ... i've tried to convince him to come to the site, saying how great it is but he says he doesnt think its as great as i tell him... Well, you guys mentioning my name (and even his: Barroca) will DEFINITLY get him here hehe :D *hatches evil scheme*

Jillian Aversa
09-14-2005, 09:19 PM
Welllll.... If you wanna be heard on the show, you should call in at the 1-800 number. Then you can mention your *own* name, and your friend, hehehe. Those clips tend to get played at the end, since they usually don't pertain to what's going on.

Make a voice clip by recording yourself on an MP3. If you do a good job, then your name might be mentioned. If I had a dollar for every time Rayza, Aurora, or Pixietricks said my name on the show, I think I'd have seven dollars.

Subscribed via the iTunes method, but not through the link on the site. Had to manually look up VGDJ over there Pod directory and subscribe that way. I assume the link is supposed to work, but it just gives me the "Not available in US stores" message when I click it.

Once again your there, in their directory, and can be subscribed manually... But your iTunes link doesn't appear to do anything...

If you have a microphone, just download and install Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/), hit the record button, and there ya go. Then just export as MP3 and you're all set.

Hey I wanted to clarify something about the lockdown you guys were talking about.

The lockdown is NOT a re-evaluation of every mix on the site based on CURRENT standards. The lockdown is a reviewal of all songs on the site to find mixes that are in VIOLATION OF OCR POLICY, i.e. MIDI rips, plagiarism, completely original work using only samples from games, etc. We are not going to rejudge every song to see if it meets the current bar.

If you guys can mention that in the next show, that'd be great. Also, next time it'd probably be better to get the full story from a judge, just so misinformation doesn't get spread around. Just sayin.

Other than that, this show was a great listen. Nice work, once again.

Did I say "Oujiamix" or "Luigimix"?
