Power trips aside, I believe that I may have a prospective remixer for the final song of the Symphonia part of the project. Those details will come further into light later today, hopefully.

For some reason I want Sir_nuts to do Search a seal ~Tethe Alla, and Darkesword to do Search a Seal ~Sylvarant for their second song. I think it would be interesting to have the calm song be remixed by darke, then afterwards hear the "upbeat" one done by Sir_nuts.
Anyhow, I just created the introduction to it. It's "alright", but it could use a lot of work. I will post it when I feel it right to be actually critiqued by you guys :).

Search a Seal ~Sylvarant
A certain someone mentioned this one when we talked yesterday, so you might see a remix of it. ;) No, it wasn't DarkeSword, and something tells that neither him nor NutS will want to pick up another song. Well, NutS, anyway. =P

I'll take it in consideration, if kyle is ok with it of course.
Anyways I haven't been around the thread enough(well, ever) So I just saw the name. Best name for a project, ever.
I'll try to get a WIP for you all soon. I'm having some inspiration problems with my music :? as well as having the little free time I have being sucked by this bastard (http://www.psobb.com), but I'll try to not let you down.

Well, it's just a very early WiP. I'm going to add some more stuff to the intro.
I noticed someone say that he heared 2 synths in the intro. That's odd, because it's one synth. (I can send you the soundfont if you like :P) Should I remove the lower bass part from it, or add some variation to that? Also, I'm going to change the signature for the intro. Once the drum kicks in, it's okay, but with just these instruments, it's nothing. (Hmm, maybe I'll add a high lead guitar there, too... Just to fill it up)
As for the transistion: I'm loosely getting inspiration from a Camel song, so expect something along those lines. I'm keeping it a surprise for all of you.
Hehe, well, this is going to be great: 2 guitarists, a singer and a keyboard player (yes, I play keyboards)... All we need is a bassplayer and a drummer and we're set for a band. ;)
Thanks for the support so far!

Can anyone here with a decent sense of pitch help me out with the first broken descending seventh chord is in Martel's theme? I'm trying to get a sense of what the key is but I don't have perfect pitch, and I failed the listening section in music class. ;)

It's in E Major, but there are various harmonic functions in it that can be misleading. I'll look at it more later when I have some time. ^^
The tonic is always descending chromatically, but otherwise, it's in E.
Can anyone here with a decent sense of pitch help me out with the first broken descending seventh chord is in Martel's theme? I'm trying to get a sense of what the key is but I don't have perfect pitch, and I failed the listening section in music class. ;)

If you can tell me all the notes that are in this chord, I can ^-^
Alright, I'm ready to comment on those two WIPs :)
Link: Although brief, it's still got a fair amount of promise with the opening statuses here. But I have to agree with much of what's been said already by thinking that the lead into the drums could have been a bit smoother. I'm still appreciating much of the concepts so far, and it should work out once everything starts to fill out.
Usa: You completely surprised me; I was expecting a piano solo, although a party anthem is just as interesting :D In the brief minute the incorporation of the theme is shown to be imaginative, and has managed to add to your diverse moods within your music. There are two things I need to state here though - firstly I'd say it needs some light dynamic processes. In other words, some of the more realistic instrumentation like the brass and the backing percussion could have done with reverb to better fit the room ambience. Depending on the software you work with, you can link the sounds up with a good range of VSTi's (or export the waves individually, apply the reverb in your wave editor and import it back into the mix that way) to make them sound more interesting in terms of granting ambience. Secondly, you sould also think of humanisation; the samples are rather cool for what they were, but some of the sequences feel a bit mechanical. That can be altered with varying attack times, release times, note lengths, velocities (most importantly of all!) and timings. But this is good stuff coming out so far; it'll be interesting to see what else you can do.

Whew... relaxation time. And no way, ABBA are not dead; they're just in a heavy hiatus that may never cease. Oh well... :?

I meant two synth parts, not necessarily two distinct synths. It's just that to introduce the song more smoothly, I'd recommned not introducing the bass and lead part together.

Thanks for your comments, Rexy, but keep in mind that this is still a baby WIP compared to the finished product. I'm still in the stage of composing, and the playing-it-again-in-a-much-better-and-much-more-emotional-way, and mixdown/mastering which also includes effects (and yeah, my keyboard has very good professional built-in effects, it can even process external sources with its effects) will be after that, so don't expect a refined mixdown or fluent playing by now. That's also the reason why I normally don't hand out WIPs, except release candidate ones or medleys where some parts are near-finished. But it's cool you like the ideas of the short segments of the product I sent here :)
Oh yeah, and to all others out there, here is the new WIP 4 for you! (http://www.informatik.uni-bremen.de/~dlippert/Iselia-WIP4.mp3) Grab it while it's still hot *lol* As you hear in this short teaser clip, this time own composition will not come too short. In fact, I plan on incorporating the different moods the party in ToS went through in Iselia. And remember, it's just a baby WIP after all :P

Because my current web host is being very flakey (I can't even access the Control Panel right now, and it seems that the server administrators are all dead, or something), I've been shopping around for some new web hosting. I've found what looks to be a damn good deal, and it looks like I'll finally get to own kylejcrb.com,. Once I get this hosting, the site should be transitioning to the new server in the next couple of days. The new hosting will have both a lot more storage space and a lot more bandwidth, which will be helpful when it comes time to release the project. I'll also be creating a forum soon (Lea, this is your cue to create a "Forum" button. :P) so those who want to discuss their arrangements or whatever in private will be able to do so. Exciting times ahead, folks!

So... I've got a new WiP. Not entirely sure about this one though. I'm going to add some stuff to the intro during the new harp section. (playing the actual melody once there is in the planning) Same goes for the guitars. I'll need some help on those things for the stuff after that though, since I've never written for guitar, so I don't know what exactly is possible and what sounds good.
As for the singing: once the entire intro is finished and the first part of the guitar is done, I'lls tart writing the melody and lyrics. :D
Anyway... Clicky! (http://home.tiscali.nl/vdwijngaart/Hydropolis3.mp3)
Note: this is the last WiP I'm slamming on the internet in a while, since the song is getting more of a shape and body now.
EDIT: I made another change to the intro by replacing a part of the synth by a nylon guitar. The high melody pad now seems to clip at certain points though, but I can't see any distinct peaks in the waveform. Any solutions to this?
EDIT2: Nevermind, I got help and now it's fine.
Dahlia
06-14-2005, 10:44 PM
The synth at the beginning is a bit "plunky" for my liking. I like the pad in the background, very subtle. The harp runs are pretty cool, but are maybe a bit too much up front and take the attention away from the melody. The melody by the way, could use a little variation. After all, it's the same four chords and melody being repeated for a full minute, so both melodic and harmonic variation would add to the interest of the song. The drums fading in is a good idea but could be a little more smooth and have some velocity editing on the hi-hat. The transition is definitely better now, it's kind of interesting how it's the same musical idea fading into itself but with different instrumentation. Even so, it might be better in the end to progress to something a little more fresh to the listener after the introduction. Glad to see the bass is up front. ^^
EDIT: Oh, it's different now! XD Okay, well I won't say much about the guitar's sound because I'm sure it's just intended as a "placeholder" for the real stuff. The strum would sound better a little smoother though (offset a notes just a tiny bit less), and with some ornamentation in between the chords. You did say you aren't too familiar with the way guitar parts are, so Prizm and I can help you with that along the way if you'd like.
Yeah, pretty nice additions. I also think that the harp is a bit too loud, but this is a minor issue which can be resolved pretty fast. I'm really looking forward what will become of this mix :)

Does this apply to Overcoat?
I liked the arrangement a lot! I didn't think the intro was interesting enough to go on for a full 30 seconds though. I'll focus on what I thought of the sounds for now. ^^ The piano didn't sound bad when the mix was thick. The kick drum reminded me of something from FL but EQ'ed a little. Personally, I think it would help the dancy feel if it actually stood out a little less.
Good job on making a really "cold" sounding WIP! Looking forward to more!

I liked the arrangement a lot! I didn't think the intro was interesting enough to go on for a full 30 seconds though.
If I recall, some of NutS' earlier arrangements had intros that lasted longer than 2 minutes, so he's really toned it down now. :P
Sounds great, NutS! One of the synths is a little loud, but otherwise, a good start.
Dahlia
06-15-2005, 04:41 AM
I like really long introductions, but this time I just meant the part where the synth was flying around. I guess it adds to the suspense. XD
Sir_NutS
06-15-2005, 04:54 AM
yeah the long intro was intentional, to emphatize a bit the chilly feel. It would feel so chilly if I went to the melody and the beat after 10 seconds, its just to set up the mood
Yeah I think the kick stoods out a bit too much though. Its not a FL kick though, I got it from an independent refill for Reason. If there's one to blame, is Sadorf! he's being saying how much my kicks suck after I moved to reason that I've trying too hard to make them sound good lol.
Don't worry this was just a first demo, and plenty of things will be fixed before the last version. Thanks for the quick feedback though, It helps a lot ^_^

As for Mystic Forest; Soraya's right. The topmost rule in the first post explains how that works.
Yeah, I had someone mention the Dream Will Never Die to me; the problem it is, how can you do it? It's like, actually a full song, with lyrics, and real instruments and stuff. :P
The piano is a real instrument. :/ As long as it has a melody, it can be arranged, "full song" or no.
And it's the game's opening theme, for crying out loud! Seriously here! It'd be like having a Zelda project without the Overworld, or a Secret of Mana project without Angel's Fear.
But whatever, fine. I might take Aviators. It's catchy enough.
MIGHT.

Hmmm...Is the Dream Will Never Die in the SNES version? Not that it matters, but yeah.
Alright, in case anyone hasn't noticed, ToP actually has one less song on its list than ToS. I took something off awhile ago (before removing Castle of the Dhaos), but I can't remember what or why, and I never replaced it with anything. If I put The Dream Will Never Die on the list, Dhsu, will you take it?
Sir_NutS
06-16-2005, 08:10 AM
The Dream Will Never Die is the intro song for the ToP game. Its actually the theme song of the game. Its some j-pop, but its not too cheesy. And actually this song blew my socks off because I haven't seen anything like that intro on a snes game.
ToP rocks.
Dahlia
06-16-2005, 08:15 AM
Yeah, it does! I don't think I've seen any other SNES game with so much voice acting. I'm glad the song numbers are equal now though. It'll be exciting to see which songs end up on the project as secondary mixes.
I bet Dhsu would make an awesome piano mix! I've been listening to Kong in Concert lately and love the part with him and SnappleMan.
...and, er... is it just me, or am I the only person who happens to think it's called "The Dream Is Endless"?

The Dream Will Never Die is the intro song for the ToP game. Its actually the theme song of the game. Its some j-pop, but its not too cheesy. And actually this song blew my socks off because I haven't seen anything like that intro on a snes game.
ToP rocks.
Yeah, I have the song, but I don't recall it being at the beginning of the SNES version. I thought it was only in the PS version.
EDIT: Huh. I guess it is. (http://www.altpop.com/stc/reviews/topdwnd.htm)

Yeah, the official ToP soundtrack only has the Playstation versions of the songs. The intro to Fighting of the Spirit is terrible, and they did kinda mess up some of the other songs, too.
Actually, Aviators would probably be easier...it's kind of growing on me now. :D But yes, I'd like to. The only problem is that I'll be overseas for the next two months, so it's unlikely I'd be able to work on anything during that time. If I don't have WIP's within the next couple days, feel free to give the spots to someone else (like Sir Nuts...it'd make an awesome dance track).
BTW, be sure to let me know if you plan to have anyone singing over my piece, because that could significantly change the way I arrange it (it'd be a little more karaoke style). ;)

I regret to inform that I will be away from my household for at least two weeks. This will majorly hinder my chances on creating my remix...at least for right now. I give you all my greatest apologies in this matter. I hope that I will still be able to contribute to this great project when I get back home. I still will be able to view the forums, so I will keep in check with you all.
Sorry once again.
Dhsu, if you do establish your songs, it's good to see you make it on this end of the project :D
And Usa, I managed to see into your fourth "baby WIP". Now I see where you're coming from with your changes of moods throughout the piece; somehow i'm of interest in seeing how much of it will go around. You may need to be a bit more cautious with your transitions from major to minor though; seemed to feel a little bit sudden here, although... yes, i know, it's a baby WIP O.o
Let's see this project keeping on moving, people!

In fact, this is intentional, because this sudden change is there to reflect the suddenly and surprisingly changing mood when the party hears the explosion at the house to the southeast of Iselia. The part after that is there to reflect the mood of the banishment. I will extend this self-composed part, too.

My SPC file for that song does the same thing. It's hard to listen to. XD
...and 6 months? I know other projects have taken a really long time, but I can't really see why this would take so long with so many people on it. I don't think it's really worth all the time waiting for a couple really slow people, or unresponsive people if that sort of thing happens. I think the mixers here are capable of making a good song in less than two or three months, surely... Sir Nuts and Red Tailed Fox already have relatively long WIPs. A quick and decisive project workflow from beginning to end would be great!

Well, Dhsu, I kinda look upon the WIP deadline just as something to ensure some kind of structure here - more or less, so people have something to aim for and won't procrastinate (hey, it's summer). We don't want things to fall apart and die here obviously. However though, since that deadline is only for the WIPs, and since you obviously have plans already made for your tracks, and since I can only assume that taking on a full-blown vocal collab shows dedication, I suppose we can't kill you if it extends beyond the WIP deadline. After all, people will still be working on their songs at that point. We just want to make sure everyone has got something to show by a certain point.
Dunno if Kyle would agree 100%, BUT HE'S NOT HERE RIGHT NOW, IS HE? Muahahaha! If not, maybe the overall WIP date can be revised. However, again, it's only a deadline by which to show you have something in the works, not something completed, so no one should be feeling too much pressure just yet.
No one else better take this as an excuse to slack, though, lest I smite thee with Indignation. Yeah.

Here is a recorded version I did for you all (http://www.informatik.uni-bremen.de/~dlippert/YumeWaOwaranai.mp3) :)
But I have to admit, I like the PSX version more, for its clarity and the nice addition part. But I have to agree that most of the in-game musics are pretty unbalanced in comparison to the SNES OST's.

IMO, To be honest, I hope those aren't the American voice samples you're planning on using, well, atleast I hope none with Collette, Genis or young Yggdrasil.
I find those to be the most annoying.
They did a good job with it nonetheless though.
Anything with Lloyd, Kratos, Sheena, Raine and older Yggdrasil would be pretty smooth... But I don't know how the openning sequence voice-overs for "Final Destination" would work with the mix overall.
Still a kick ass song either way, me thinks.

Wow...You guys post a lot. Okay, not really. It only took me like, 10 minutes to catch up! Slackers.
Alright! Let me get up to date here:
Dhsu: When do you and pixietricks plan on leaving, when are you coming back, and how fast can you work? :P
Actually, I trust you, since I wanted pixie on the project in some way, shape, or form from the very start, and Dhsu was one of the people who was on my mind when I was going through VGMix, looking for potential recruits. I think an extension in your case would be okay; perhaps you can PM me with some ideas you have or whatever, and that can count towards a "WIP" for the time being.
Soraya: Now do you understand why I said 6 months or more? :P
PriZm: I can record the entire final battle scene for you, though there tends to be some pops throughout recorded audio on my PC, for some reason.
As far as American voice samples: Yup. It's all I've got. :P Their voices aren't THAT bad, though. Sometimes Colette sounds like she's reading from a script, instead of making it natural, but overall, none of the voices are that terrible (and some are REALLY good).
Master Link: I will do my best.

I currently post here on ocremix and my Ultima Online guilds forums. I love posting and giving my free thought on everything. It's fun.
I haven't played Tales of Symphonia in about six months or so, All I can really remember is the music and the sounds of everyones voice (overall, except the summons)
Always thought Presea and Sheena were pretty cute.
Anyways. Sometimes, yeah Collette.. just turned me off, with all her smiling and "I don't feel anything" yadda yadda. (Can we say dead fish?)
Kratos, Lloyd and Yggdrasil= Kick ass, Good for them. I would definately use them..
As for the Final Destination mix.. Lemme listen to the original real quick here...
Okay, now are you including "It can waver and fight(Yggdrasil, Mithos battle 1" along with "Final Destination (Mithos battle 2)" or are they both seperate mixes? If I remember correctly, there was some dialouge inbetween both pieces... if you're piecing these two together, I would make it all serious and jumpy, cinematic, sort of make it so everyone can use "imagery" to see the fight go one within their head... and so on. Not too classy that it sucks. But yeah. again, my .02.

The bits of It Can Waver that show up throughout Final Destination will be in PriZm's mix; I believe that PriZm has been in contact with Christian Pacaud (who's doing It Can Waver), and from what I can tell, they're going to see if they can tie them together, and connect them in some way. Don't quote me on that, though, since I can't speak for PriZm or Christian. :P
As far as dialogue, I'll just turn off the music, and play through and record the entire fight. PriZ can pick and choose from there what he wants to use.

Alternate track selection is now OPEN! For reference, here are the rules for alternate tracks and how they work. I'm expecting a pretty big change for the direction of this project.
Lea and I just discussed this, and I think it's something that could make the people who want to do a track not listed on the project right now happy. What we've come up with is this: If you have already claimed or are planning to claim ONE song (those who currently have two tracks selected are exempt from this) for this project, then, once the track list is completely filled and all of the current tracks are claimed, we will allow you to choose ONE extra song not currently listed to remix for the project. If you decide that you can't do the extra track, it will be removed completely, with no chance of getting picked up by anybody else. This rule will go not go into effect until all of the main tracks listed are claimed by at least one person; reason being that we want to get what currently have filled up first, before we start adding things. Hopefully this might convince some of you to try and get some other people on board to fill up the list. Also, you must guarantee that you will ABSOLUTELY finish both of the tracks.
We're not trying to declare open season on the entire soundtracks of both of these games. This is just a compromise we have decided to make for those who wanted to do something that's not currently listed. One of our goals with this project is to still keep it maintainable and reasonable. We don't want to get overly ambitious.
As I explained in the first post of this thread, more than one person is able to claim a song. The song that ultimately makes it onto the project, out of the multiple remixes of the same track, will be decided on by myself and Lea. If our opinions either conflict or we agree that both of the remixes are good, we will put forth a voting procedure in which the people who are involved with the project will decide which version of the song will be on the final product (the voting is the likely scenario). In the case of a person who has claimed both a track currently listed and an alternate unlisted track going up against someone else; the alternate track will still be put on the project, regardless of the outcome of the coordinator/voter decision on the listed track.
Post here or tell me in a PM what alternate track you'd like to remix, if any. Here we go!
Oh man, I still need to pass Prizm my mix to tie him into that and all O.o

Just for you guys to have a quick look in what I've been digin up so far: :D
http://www.savefile.com/filehost/files.php?fid=6247665
Just a few things:
1 - It is still a farily rough take.
2 - Flute in 2:06 sound a bit dry, I know, that will be fixed.
3 - The arrengment may seem concluded, but it's not, I fact it's far from it.
4 - It's hard to addmit this, but I think it's the hardest song I have ever arranged.
Hope you guys enjoy what I have so far! :D

I'd love to and most likely will! But I won't make it official yet so I can be 100% sure to finish both in time. I intend to be finished all songs by the WIP date. ^-^
KyleJCrb
06-22-2005, 07:49 AM
Well, I intend on making the second WIP due date on September 1st, and then working down incrementally from there (two weeks, then maybe several one week dates...Not sure about three weeks yet, but we'll see how people are progressing), as songs are completed. So you have time after this date. There's no rush, but if you can complete the songs, that's great!

I have a tune remixed thats not on the list that kinda Chain the titles together in a more spesific way as its the ending tunes of both games..

Obviously I can't do an extra song being at home all Summer. Yes, yes, I know I rendered a MIDI mix for PRC44 but that was with Anvil Studio - pretty tedious stuff. O.o
As for the title, the sample showed that the tentative name is just simply "Summoning of Spirits". If I somehow come up with a better one before the project is up I'll state it here, but if not... i'll probably keep this one ;)

Unless you can get to me first, that is. :P
Sorry, I'm a slacker. :( I haven't started yet, I got a load of work dumped on me this week. The intention was to work on it this weekend. It usually takes me about a week to come up with a decent completed first draft. Plus I'm new to this all, so mine should take longer than most others to reach a good level of quality.
KyleJCrb
06-23-2005, 12:34 AM
Not a problem, Arcana. I'm not expecting WIPs from everybody at this point; just a quick status update. ;)
Hmmm, odd. I wonder if all of ne0-net got hacked. Oh well. New website is at http://talesproject.kylejcrb.com anyway, so it doesn't matter to me. Hopefully the new one is safe, though... (EDIT: This is weird. The rest of my old site is still there! I guess telling people you've moved makes it susceptible to hackers.)
As for everything else; I've said it time and time again. THE CURRENT TRACK LIST IS LOCKED. The ONLY way you're going to get any extra songs onto the project at this point is by being signed up for something already on the list (which is also full), and by taking advantage of the extra song rule outlined in the first post (and on pages 14 and 26). Also, there will be absolutely no changes to the first and last tracks of each part of the project; the intro and ending themes are FINAL. That is all.
Dahlia
06-23-2005, 07:12 AM
You can go to some hacker forum or something and find a security exploit and run a couple programs and then the site/forums are yours. That's why it's good to always update your browser/PHP thing/server/whatever!
Fox, you already know what I think of your WIP! ^^ It's awesome! But I'm gonna listen to this one just in case it's updated from what I heard.
Arcana, I like that you take a good amount of time to plan your work. I never start working until I have the whole structure in my head too, at least when it's something serious or bigger.
Glad you're doing check-ins, Kyle! It'll probably keep things going smoothly if everyone hears from you. (I might slack off and need a check-in in a few weeks, too. XD)

Hey if somebody IS planning on doing an extra song, it would be great is someone would do "Triumph" from ToP. That's right, the Castle tune (it isn't that hard to do, I'm actually planning on ReMixing itself one day... right now I lack a decent keyboard to remix and being able to play it on the piano doesn't really make a ReMix now does it ;) ).
Anyway, I know all of you are busy and such, but if somebody would choose this one for their alternate song I would be most grateful.
Keep up the good work guys!

Lunar, nice WIP! The percussion is pretty cool. The snare really is way too dry though! I really like the plucked instrument that appears in the last few seconds. Hope to hear more! (What a battle it'll be, between the Sheena's Theme contenders...)
Triumph is a really great song. I just got 3/4 through Star Ocean 1 and I'm starting to like Sakuraba more and more. (Though I've been a fan for years!) I'd like to do that, but I already have my alternate song partially composed. I hope somebody else will do Triumph too.
Still awesome, Fox! I liked the old title better though. XD
PS: Has there been any word from Eric Dude, Kyle? I love Desolate Road and would like to hear from him on here. ^^

I'm still amazed nobody has stepped up and officially claimed a second song; a lot of people were talking about it before, but I didn't want to do anything before they made it official. Anyone? Anyone?
Dahlia
06-24-2005, 01:04 AM
Well, since you said when you claim a second track you have to absolutely guarantee that you will complete both tracks, (a good policy) people might be waiting to get enough work done on their original track to make sure both will be done in a reasonable time. I know that's what I'm doing. ^^
Mr. Fox
06-24-2005, 01:05 AM
I am not sure... I want to do some other song, but Moria Gallery is still taking a lot of time and effort from me, so I won't choose anything before I am done with that.

Mr. Fox
06-24-2005, 02:34 AM
Hahahaha!!! In fact this was a mistake of mine.
The song will be called "Riddles in the Dark", but my very first title choice was "Steel Under Rock", I named the Reason file after that name and every time I export the song as an MP3 file it comes out called "Steel Under Rock" but the tittle will be "Riddles in the Dark". Reference to J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit
I think "Riddles in the Dark" is better, but I am terrible with names (just check out my other mixes for proof - and NO the mispelling on my Super Mario RPG was NOT my choice, it was a stupid mistake :D ) so I might changed it...

Since the site isn't working for me right now, I'll just say it here!
That's a pretty interesting song! It's creepy in a way and really brings out how frightening it'd be to wander around in a mysterious and ancient civilization with robotic computer voices calling out to you. I really like the concept of the song you came up with. Makes me think of ToP survival horror, but with scary robots instead of zombies. XD Or maybe Thorian zombies!
Since I thought the production was great, I'll just express a few personal preferences about what could be added or changed.
I liked how it ended, with the little percussion part. It'd be cool if you extended that and made it fade out slowly, and after it was almost gone it could do the sort of "technical crash/wind-down" thing anyway, really loud. Throughout it felt like I was lost in the technical sounds, which has a cool effect, but a little more timbral and pacing variation would really add to the mix. If there were some spacey, slower part in the middle. It'd be cool if a very clear chime-type noise appeared with the main melody somewhere either above or deep inside the chaos of the song. For a contrasting effect! Actually, in the whole first minute I expected some hyper-fast breakbeat to emerge. Your percussion was pretty cool! Reminded me of Battery 2, which I use. The synth that appears at 2:25 could be just a tad bit quieter.
So, that was just me rambling my thoughts. You don't have to take it seriously! XD

Hey!
Sorry for the long time it took me to post here, but I got a lot of work to do in the recent days so I wasn't able to spend much time on the project. I am preparing for going to Germany soon because I planned to use my free time from studying to go there and play with the orchestra. It will be July 15. until August 09. During this time I will not be able to do anything for the project, but after that I think there's enough time for me to finish things
For the second song: It's the same as for many other people here. I haven't made my mind up on what song I should choose as a second one. I also want the first one finished before I start with the second one. At the moment I'm not sure whether one of those three songs I should do:
Harmonious Moment (ToP)
Rovers (ToS)
Desert Flower (ToS)
Search A Seal ~ Sylvarant (ToS)
Oh yeah, and Silas already started on his contribution, as well. It will be a drum 'n' bassy track with heavy electric guitar :) I'm really looking forward to it, so is he.

It's in E Major, but there are various harmonic functions in it that can be misleading. I'll look at it more later when I have some time. ^^
The tonic is always descending chromatically, but otherwise, it's in E.
Dumb question. Is this actually correct? I had a look at it and it doesn't follow Eb Major very well. But then, it also doesn't fit into E major very well either.
I suppose the key question is - does it matter? Well, it REALLY helps if I know what key a song is in so when I write a harmony I don't totally mess it up. I grabbed the MIDI but haven't figured out the progression yet. Yeah I suck.

It's a bit tricky. For this piece you can't really say it's in one key or another, because there's no real established tonality. Actually, it was silly of me to say E major earlier, I'd definitely say E minor if anything. It won't follow any normal key signature though, because it's mostly chromatic.
First it starts with a chord on the first degree, which is all well and normal. Then, already it abandons the signature in favor of chromaticism, making the root descend a half-step from the first degree onto D#. You can see, from here it keeps moving downwards until it prepares itself for the half close cadence in the relative major, G. (IV-I) Then it starts over again.
The cadence at the end and the beginning chord lead me to believe it's in E minor with some simple chromatically descending patterns. An in-depth analysis might reveal that it's in a more obscure tonal mode and that all the harmonic progressions are valid within a particular tonality, but for now I'd just say it's heavily chromatic in Em/GM. ;p
The song could be difficult to manipulate, but if you prepared it correctly you could write plainly in G major or E minor after that cadence without it sounding too far from the actual song.

I am having a remixer's block. I have no idea what to create this into. I have tried a full blown symphonic feel....only it doesn't feel right. I have tried some sort of techno ish feel.....doesn't feel right. ACH!!
Little help on what you think it should be like?

I don't know what styles you're comfortable with or your experience with guitars, but I could hear it as a progressive rock/metal remix (especially with the double-kick drum madness going on in the middle). That's sort of the trend among some of the musicians already involved in the project so it would fit right in, in that respect.

Just off the top of my head, I'd be inclined to do speed metal, or maybe an organ solo piece. Or both in the same song.
Hey, now that I listen to it, I regret not having picked it to begin with! XD
I usually listen to something for quite a long time and examine the score before I really decide though. If you're going to compose a symphony, you first have to see if there are several recognizable themes with which to create a symphonic form. Or if you were making a passacaglia, you'd have to see if the melody lent itself well to four bar variation in multiple voices.
It really is up to you, though! Remember if you're able to/decide to compose rock or metal, you've got a bunch of guitarists willing to record for you! It's a pretty cool song, there's a lot you could do with it. ^^
I'd love to hear a great variety of genres in this project so we can make albums that are constantly exciting in the "What's coming next!?" sort of way.

Hmm....
HMM...
I am in a sort of garage band. I suppose I could recreate the song into a sort of song similar to Beyond lightspeed (http://www.ocremix.org/detailmix.php?mixid=OCR01023).
You just got my inspirational juices all flowin!

Hale-Bopp is once again reading my mind. It definitely has that progressive sound, despite being symphonic. Hmmm...

If there's reasonable agreement that there's no established tonality then I'll simply work with the chromaticism and see what I can come up with. Since I'm still new to all of this, and my music theory knowledge is pretty basic, I like to build harmony using chord tones, basic progressions, and some basic non-harmonic tones. This (along with the Ultima 8 soundtrack in OCR Idol) would be my first rather deep plunge into the realm of music with no real established tonality. I'm probably in the minority by doing this, but I like to analyse what I'm remixing before I actually start adding stuff to it.
There's not a lot here in terms of a melody, so I might incorporate bits from "Unicorn", which uses a variation of the melody from Martel.

Interestingly, Unicorn was actually originally on the list of possible tracks before Martel's theme was. I guess I should've brought up the similarities before...
Oh, and you probably noticed this, but Martel's theme isn't the last song anymore. ;)

Well, the half-cadence and opening chord give it a sense of E minor, but the song just doesn't follow any of the accidentals. You could construct your own chromatic patterns, but try to think of E as your tonic even in all the semitone madness! ^^

And people are already making a ton of progress on their remixes, too. I expected the other two projects here (SDB and SSF2, SSF2 in particular) to take off and be a lot more popular than this one... Quite frankly, I'm surprised, and glad that it's working out so well.
I know I probably haven't said it enough, but thanks to everyone for really taking this project beyond what I expected. Interestingly enough, I started this project expecting the usual things to happen; a lot of people dropping out, flame war on page 30, arguments all over the place, drama, and all that stuff that usually comes along with projects. Incredibly, all of that has been almost non-existant, so we're all doing a great job. :)

The opening is so majestic, with the stately piano chords. It's an exciting feeling and serves as a good exposition of the main theme. The dynamic on the piano are very nice. The transition from the opening material to the section with the drums works really well, and I like how the piano part is handled with the strings playing the melody.
When it changes again at 2:06... ahh, I can't decide whether I like the old version with the woodwinds playing that part or the new one! They're both good! The snare part suddenly coming in is a little disconcerting, you wonder what's going on, and then at 2:24 it all makes sense! Really cool interpretation of the song here, and the drums are great! The bass could be a little louder, cause' I love bass. ^^ I wish this section was longer!
Okay, this is the interesting part. I was really wondering where you'd go next, but I didn't expect something this clever. At first it sounds smooth and flowing. All is well... but then the dissonances are slowly introduced, and it becomes more frantic-sounding. People who played through the lower levels of the Moria Gallery might remember the music began to sound really weird near the end. I think it was to give the effect of, "You've been down here so long, so deep, with these horrible things, you're slowly going mad." I'm glad you remembered that and included it! The only problem is that people who haven't played Phantasia might not understand, so you might want to clear up the dissonance in a relatively short time. Actually, I'd suggest making it even more unsettling for a few moments just to give the listeners the feeling that something is really wrong. ^^ I can see this new section being really cool, so keep at it!

Hey Arcana, if you need help with analyzing Martel's theme, I could get the chords for you. Out of the blue, I'd say it's just ii-V-I with substitutions and stuff. It's definitely not random, anyway.

I'm in the process of sitting down with it and working it out. I'm no music theory expert but I could honestly use the practice. If you have an interpretation for me, do feel free to share but do not feel obligated to do so.

That interpretation is much more understandable than mine! Actually, I didn't hear the C in the first chord, so I took the last two chords as being IV - I in G. I have failed and must accept my shame by permanently resigning from OCR! And the whole internet!

The first chord was definitely a C. That's about as far as I got before I had to do other things. ;)

Very nice WIP Fox! Like Soraya said, you brought back the distorted feeling from the lower levels of Moria (and isn't that the whole point, to bring back the feeling?).
And Usa, you should deside for yourself which alternate you want *cough* Harmonious Moment * cough*
