Dude, the Tales of Symphonia soundtrack sucked :)
Well, it had some good tracks. You seemed to have picked the best ones, so go for it.
I know someone who is going to be rooting for this project all the way. A friend at the school I go to is the BIGGEST Tales fan ever. Played almost all the games, downloaded the Phantasia anime, etc. As such people around him get annoyed with Tales since he talks about it all the time (doesn't help that he is a bit of an idiot). Tales gets a bit of bad rap around here because of it :)
Anyway, best of luck!

Thanks for the support.
A frickin' Fighting of the Spirit mix by frickin' house.

About time this came up ^^ I'm game in seeing what will be able to come out of the WIPs, and once either A - the downstairs computer's soundcard/CD burner is fixed, or 2 - the upstairs computer's net connection is established i'll be sure to offer my input.

Hey, hey. The smiley was in my post for a reason! Having a little joke.
In all seriousness, Symphonia's OST wasn't amazing to me, but there was some good tunage available (of which have appeared in this project ie. All the battle themes).
Oh yeah, about the tracklist. Any chance of having the ending theme in there? Or are you just going to end it with Prizm's presumably to-be fast metal mix.

Before I run away, I should probably announce that I've been talking to SnappleMan, and it looks like he'll be a part of this project, tentatively. He isn't 100% sure yet, with 5 tracks for the Sonic 3 project, and other upcoming events, but things look fairly good.
And now, I run from NutS. *runs*

We initially thought about including a few songs from some of the other Tales games, but decided that would be too ambitious (there are too many good songs!), and that the project should have more of a focus on one part of the series. Since the storylines between Phantasia and Symphonia are connected (albeit seperated by at least several thousand years, I believe, with ToS being first), and are also arguably the two most popular games in the series, we went with them.
As far as other Tales projects, I have no idea. Honestly I have no experience with the other games, so it all depends on whether or not anybody else decides that they deserve projects.

Welcome, Usa! Perhaps we need a side project for Mario Paint remixes. :P
Soraya: Yeah, the songs that needed to be on the Symphonia part were much more obvious, and choosing for the Phantasia part wasn't easy. But, I think we managed a well-rounded selection that most people can be happy with. (Unless people are still just making their murder plans... :P)

I wonder if there are really remixes done with Mario Paint.
I can't get my emulator running right with the mouse. Mouse movement works, but mouse clicking doesn't :(
And my real SNES is a thousand kilometres away from here... Let's hope someone else does a decent MP remix :)
Oh yeah, and I can guarantee that not all the remixes will be crazy death metal screaming tracks *lol* At least mine will be a solo piano arrangement.
Oh yeah, and btw. if anyone of you needs piano in their mixes, please contact me, and I see what I can do for you. I already have some collab experience so it should not be a big problem :)

Are there plans for organizing any sort of album flow? Of course, the tracks can be arranged in any way later on, but it would make for an awkward album if all of us happened to make, say, crazy death metal screaming songs. XD
Actually, that is something that's being discussed (in fact, that's part of the reason why we're going to be reorganizing the tracks before the release of the project), and we have a few ideas of how to do it. More will be revealed as we figure out the exact details. ;) And of course, if anyone has any ideas, don't be afraid to toss 'em out there. We're considering everything.
Usa, you should try the Mario Paint clone: http://www.8-bit.jp/file/MarioSeqE.zip
Talking of which, the spirit spooth cometh (http://rexy.herograw.com/fighting-spirit.msq) :D
If you have problems trying to get that to load with the software that Kyle pointed at, I still have it rendered in MP3 format (http://rexy.herograw.com/fighting-spirit-mariopaint.mp3) just for you.
Yeah, I have way too much time on may hands :P
KyleJCrb
05-29-2005, 09:48 PM
Somehow I don't remember the original Mario Paint being capable of something like that. :P Good work, Rexy!
Wow, that Mario Paint version is just hilarious! Sadly I can't use the fake Mario Paint app you gave me, because I own Macs and on Virtual PC it runs too stuttery, at least with my version. I know the newer versions are much better, but I will try to run the actual Mario Paint on my old PowerMac G3. I could run it with full mouse control on a self-made SNES9X version there! *lol* This thread is almost more about Mario Paint than the actual project by now!

And now I got my G3 to work with an older version of the emulator, and here (http://www.informatik.uni-bremen.de/~dlippert/mp-iselia.mp3) it is.

Alright, alright, let's not get too distracted now. :P Even though there's not much else to do, except wait and see if more people express their interest in joining this thing...
EDIT and *bump*: Not much to update on, except for I've been discussing this project with Ashane, and he should hopefully have a song (or maybe songs, but who knows) chosen tomorrow. Zyko man, if you catch this thread, let me know what you want to pick up, too.
Otherwise, not a lot of news on this front. I've received one WIP so far, and it's looking good. If anybody wants to recruit a remixer or two for this project, don't be afraid to tell them about it. It will be greatly appreciated. :)
I put a bump in your mom last night...
Eh, what we need are button banners to help spread the project around; that way the people can put them in their sig to help support the project.
Then again, I come up with the most insane ideas :?

Okay, track cross-fades: If you have an idea of whose song you want to fade into/out of, let me know, and I will put you in contact with the remixer of the other song (I thought I explained this in the first post :P).
When it comes time to order this thing, we'll make sure that the songs that are fading into each other stay together. Since it's being sort of a controversial topic right now, we might possibly just order the tracks before hand, instead of waiting. But for now, this is how it'll work.
EDIT: Okay, I think I've got a decent game plan for the order of the Symphonia part. Go check it out on the first page and let me know if there's any problems with it. Gonna work on ordering the Phantasia part right now.
Even though i'm unable to mix or anything as of now (I still have done my FotS incarnation for the deadline though), i still hope to offer my vox to the project if anyone wants it :)

Updated the Phantasia track listing. This is now pretty much how the final project will be organized, as far as track order. Of course, I'm open to any suggestions, so if you have any qualms, please let me know.
Also, Hemophliac and OverCoat are teaming up on Mid Galds, so the Phantasia part of the project is really shaping up. Keep those WIPs coming!

Ah, I didn't really mean to ask about what was already answered, I just found some sort of technical problem with how it would work that I can't remember now. XD
The mixers should make some sort of private forum in which to discuss what one another are doing. I think the overall quality of the project will increase if everyone is on the same 'wavelength'. (I know I might be getting ahead of things, here. )

Hehe, well, I think most of those forums die eventually, but it's an idea worth considering. Let's get a little further into the project first before we get a forum up, though. ;)
EDIT and *ka-bump*: Rubbler is now officially on the project, with Sheena's theme from Tales of Symphonia. Be sure to check out his stuff if you haven't heard it.

Of course I can change the name in the banner, it's just a string after all :) But what is the project's current name? Just "Tales of Phantasia/Symphonia ReMix Project"? I guess that's a really lame name, and way too long. Lots of people I know call it the "Tales Project" but that doesn't state it's about VGM and ReMixes. But I think that doesn't matter for now, I will use that expression until someone comes up with something better :)
Any better ideas?

Hey Usa, I thank you for your offer, but Lea is going to play the official graphics artist for the project, since she's good with that kind of stuff ;). We've decided on a project name (will be unveiled after the graphics are done) and all of that, so just be patient for a little bit, and we'll have something cool for you all!
Otherwise, keep tossing your ideas out there, folks! If you have any qualms, let us know, and also be sure to jump onto the project if you're a remixer who's interested. We could use your support. :)
Here (http://www.informatik.uni-bremen.de/~dlippert/banner.html) we go! :o

Or are you just going to end it with Prizm's presumably to-be fast metal mix.
Huh ? I wanted to do something quite different. In fact, I wanted to a a long progressive song to end the album. But if it's not the last song I'll prolly do the fast metal shit
Dahlia

I'll probably be composing a symphony for strings and winds in sonata-allegro form. With short songs like "Treant", having any kind of length relies on a form with strong thematic development. Treant lends itself to the form especially well because it has two pretty memorable melodies in it. Anyway, that's what I'm doing, just in case any of the people around my track would like to know.
Speaking of the "progressive" genre, I hope Christian makes a piece as great as his recent Secret of Mana ReMix. That's definitely one of my favorites on OCR.
(Hey, PriZm, let's have mine fade into your "fast metal shit". XD)

Maybe a somewhat long, but fast progressive metal song? Something like ein anderer Abschied, but a little faster? That's what I was looking forward to for Final Destination, anyway, but of course, it's all up to you. :)
EDIT: There, now nobody will be in the dark on what song will be last on the project. Check the first page for a slight update.

I've always been meaning to do a remix, but haven't quite gotten to one yet. I'm always getting various ideas in my head though.
Currently though, I'm thinking Regal's Theme done by a Jazz Trio. I would just have to conjure up a place to record it though.
Not unless anyone can lead me to a program that I could use for something like this ^_^;;

Oh, also, if you need a male vocalist, I can fit the part well. I've a rather broad range, I'm a Baritone, but sing Tenor in my school's Jazz Choir, and can also hit some pretty low bass notes.

Of course. We need as many remixers as we can get, because there's still a lot of this project to fill up. I might start another round of recruiting after this thread gets moved to the ReQuests forum, but we'll see.
Just wondering if anyone read my last post here on the forum (*NOT* the Mario Paint one 8O). Maybe there went something wrong with it, but as it looks like it has been ignored by everyone here. :?
In case you don't know what's it about, it's about some first banners and buttons I made for the project so far.

Oh, sorry Usa! Each time I posted I forgot to say something about them. They're really nice, especially the third one. If Kyle doesn't mind, I guess we should put them in our signatures? He did say,
Hey Usa, I thank you for your offer, but Lea is going to play the official graphics artist for the project, since she's good with that kind of stuff Wink. We've decided on a project name (will be unveiled after the graphics are done) and all of that, so just be patient for a little bit, and we'll have something cool for you all!
...so I'm not sure if he wants to leave that entirely to Lea.
Strange...when did he write that? Did I miss something? I never saw a post written by him regarding that.
Edit: Oh, now I've seen it on page 5 of the thread, right at the end. Yeah, I read it a bit too late, I guess *lol* Must have overread it...and in a similar way most of the folks here appear to have overread my post with the URL to the gallery.
But nevertheless, I wouldn't have offered to do it if I wouldn't be proficient enough in the graphics business, as well. The three thingies that are on the page are quickly done ones, just for everyone to already "have something". I can do much more refined graphics work, but if it just gets rejected, where's the point in doing it in the first place?
So I will wait for an official reply now and offer everyone to view the little gallery of banners (http://www.informatik.uni-bremen.de/~dlippert/banner.html) I created (without knowing the actual project's name, but still able to change the text on all of them within 5 minutes' time).
What else would I have to say? uhm.. oh yeah, "Joah!" ^-^

All of you are more than welcome to use them in your sigs, but remember; the name of the project will change, and there will be some "official" graphics coming soon, courtesy of Lea. I hope Usa will update his graphics after the name is revealed, then we can use both! :P
Of course I will update them, as soon as I get my hands on the real name of the Project.
Oh yeah, and I apologize to all of you in case someone of you thought I wanted to take Lea's place or something like that. I didn't intend to do so - just want to help out where I can :|

Here's a visual representation of my WIP. XD (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v451/SorayaSakamoto/WIP.jpg)
No Flash, eh? This makes things difficult. For now I just rendered an animated GIF with 16 colors that looks totally inferior, consumes 6 times the space and runs at half the framerate in a smaller size :vomit:
You can get it at my Banner page (URL same as in previous posts). I have to come up with something different, I guess...

It would be cool if "Euclid" or "Harmonious Moment" could somehow be worked into the album, providing there are enough mixers.
PS: I'll definitely be willing to do more than one song if some of the slots remain empty long enough.
PS #2: This post was not just an excuse to bump the topic. I would never do that.
Never.
I love "Harmonious Moment" a lot, too, and would also do a mix of it, but it's not here, so no mix, I guess :P
Anyway... I updated my banner page once again and made a new flash (and GIF) banner for you.
And, I managed to recruit someone for the project. It's a good friend of mine who studies Audio Engineer together with me. He is a drummer and guitarist and mostly likes jazz, funk, hip hop and in general chill-out music. I sent him the songs that are left to remix today and am just waiting for his answer :)

As far as project threads go, mods have been discussing it and we've decided to move project threads into ReQuests after a week of being in GD. This is primarily because beginning projects are, in essence, elaborate requests; however, we still want to provide that initial window of front page exposure to new projects, so we allow a week of GD presence. So just be aware that we will be moving your thread into RQ after a week, and eventually/hopefully it will have a place in Site Projects. :)

There's no way this can be a mediocre project! I'll have to personally ensure that it accomplishes at least the quality of Kong in Concert. Er, well, that's Kyle's job. XD

Anyway, graphics are coming along strong. A new release from Tales of Symphonia went up on VGMix last night, so there is one potential recruit (not for the song they did, though). ;) Hopefully Lea and I can reveal more project details tomorrow, like the name. Kyle, I noticed that Martel is the last song on the ToP album. Now, I'm not questioning your authority or anything (XD), but it's really a very short song and could prove difficult to shape into a worthwhile "credits" song. Meanwhile, Lake on Ymir is certainly one of the best songs in the soundtrack, is very remixable, and isn't on the tracklist. Of course, I don't think you should do anything you don't want to, but... ooo, I love Ymir.

I know I said ReQuests, but I believe that Unofficial Projects will get more continued exposure in WIP:OC. So yay for that.
This project has been moved from GD to WIP:OC because it's over a week old, and as part of the new policy on unofficial project threads, after a week of GD exposure, they move here to be "worked on."
Good luck on your project everyone! :)

Thank you.
Anyway, the track order is more or less tenative at the moment - it most likely will be changed around if people were planning to have tracks lead into others, or if we end up arranging the order based on the way the songs themselves turn out gerne/themewise (dunno about Final Act being a last track, though, despite the name - it's overworld music).
As for excluding certain songs... sadly, that was inevitable. We spent a while finalizing the song list, and unfortunately we had to exclude some good tracks - we've already got close to forty songs. As I've said, though, hopefully this will inspire more remixers to work on Tales music.

Here we go with round 2 of recruiting for this project. We only have a few spots left, so keep filling them up! And for those of you who have already joined the project; keep workin' on those songs, and keep me updated on your progress. I'll be checking with a lot of remixers over the course of the next few weeks to see how things are going. ;) Hopefully that will help with the process of getting this project on the road to completion. It will be a long road, but with help and communication with each other, we can make it. The progress being made so far is impressive, and hopefully we will be in Site Projects very soon!

Rexy, I read that review for Boy Aims for Other Boys at VGMix, so I know you haven't played Secret of Mana.
In this state, you have no right to be using time making forum posts when there's such a big, gaping hole in your life.
(Oh yeah, and I can't wait to hear how cool you make Fighting of the Spirit.)
For the WIPs... I'm sort of the "complete and unveil" type of creator, rather than the, "piece-by-piece" kind. If Kyle wants to post some preview tracks on the front page, though, I wouldn't mind.

Remember, if you need help with ideas or anything, don't be afraid to post what you have in the thread and what you might want to do; We're all here to help each other, especially in this stage of the project. ;)

I did go as extreme as G4 as shown here (http://dod.dragolf.net/(05-04)_April_2005_-_Dragon_Warrior/Rexy%20and%20KyleJCrb%20-%20DW4%20-%20Requiem%20of%20A%20Warrior.mp3) but there's no way I'm doing that again in a fair while :P
So yeah, I hope this helps out ^_~
Thanks. I'll try to keep it between those 2 notes.
Side note: that's about my range, too. I know, disproportionally high for a guy. Can go lower than F2 though. Yay for baritones. :P
Anyway, I've found 1 thing about Hydropolis... It's a town with water. (As if the name didn't give that away...)
But please, I need more information for my lyrics to make sense. They'll have to at least connect a BIT to the game. :P

Glad people are liking the banners. :D Usa's animated ones are pretty nifty, too. I like the purple firey one.
Anyway, while it's been a while since I've played ToP... was Alvanista (or whatever the town Hydropolis plays in was) the place where you first meet that couple that's trying to get together, and you can affect the outcome of their relationship? If so, that might be a good source for a song... assuming I didn't just make that all up.

Unfortunately I don't have as much experience with ToP as I do ToS, so I can't tell you much about Hydropolis. :(
But I can tell you that CC Ricers has now picked up a song: Sheena's theme, from Symphonia. Welcome aboard!
Also, Nick Tam, who recently released an arrangement of Presea's theme from ToS over at VGMix (http://www.vgmix.com/song_view.php?song_id=4280), is now involved, claiming Dry Trail from ToS. Keep sending those WIPs, folks!

Some tiny bits of news to report on this front: Lea and I are working on a new website design, which should go live in the next couple of days. Recruiting work continues, as well, with a few musicians showing some interest, but no definites as of yet.
Other than that, work moves along. Please try to keep in contact with me and let me know what you're up to. Remember, if you don't get a WIP to me on or before August 1st, you risk removal from the project. Don't let that happen!

Brand new website! http://kngi.ne0-net.com/TalesProject/
Okay, so it mostly has the same content at the old one. :P BUT, thanks to Lea, it's much more organized, it looks much more aethesthetically pleasing, and it's just plain cool. Go check it out, and leave your suggestions if you have any!
just wondering... are the navigational buttons really so far down on the page or is it just my browser? It's kinda weird because I have to scroll down to see them all, and in addition I am able to scroll way~yyy more down without seeing anyhting below the page's contents. This is really strange... :?
If this is intended, you might want to redesign it so the buttons already start to the left of the big banner image. You can do this in a quite easy way by incorporating tables. If you are confused now, I like to offer my help :)
Oh yeah, and btw. if you want you can use the uppermost animated banner of my gallery for that page, as well (It's the one with just the project's title, with animated purple flames in the background that doesn't link anywhere)
KyleJCrb

That's odd. I'm assuming you're using Safari? You shouldn't have to scroll much at all... The navigation, text, and top logo are all right together on my end and in the source code. Hmm...
I think he means having the organisational stuff on one page without having to scroll much. Have you tried frames? That can be an option to stop that happening.
Mind you, good design so far ^^ Even though there's nothing on the links button (it's just the same as the main page) it's coming along firmly enough. Nice work, hermano. :nicework:

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by "having to scroll much", because on most pages, I hardly have to scroll at all (the exceptions being the Tracklist and the Banners page, which are just really long). Unless something crazy is going on your guys' end...
Kyle, not everyone has a monitor resolution as big as 1024x768 ;)
KyleJCrb
06-08-2005, 05:48 PM
You mean you don't? Gosh, browsing OCR must be murder on the table sizes. :P
I'll see what I can do.
OK, I tried it in Safari as well, now...and it's exactly the same. I made some screenshots and posted them here (http://www.informatik.uni-bremen.de/~dlippert/sitepics/) to show what I was talking about. Look at the respective scroll bar's status to the right, especially on the banner site! OK, in Safari it's just Okay on the main site, I don't have to scroll down (maybe you changed something) but I was also referring to the fact that the navigation starts below the banner. You could make the whole page look more pleasant and symmetric without frames, just by using invisible tables (with border=0). I just made a quickie with a visible table where you can see how I mean it, just look here (http://www.informatik.uni-bremen.de/~dlippert/tabletest/tabletest.html).
Sounds nice to see your thoughts on all this, but I still have to scroll a fair bit on my browser especially in a horizonal direction. It may have helped if the banner was shown in a top row, not part of the right hand column. These are the thoughts i have in mind for its design, in ASCII format -
|----------|
|THE BANNER|
|__________|
|B|========|
|U|========|
|T|OPENING=|
|T|========|
|O|==BLURB=|
|N|========|
|S|========|
----------~o
I hope you understand what I mean O.o
[EDIT: Okay so now I just realised that my thoughts were the same as what was on the main page, which seems to work a bit better through my browser in terms of scrolling. I still think some frames would make some aspects that bit cleaner. O.o]
KyleJCrb
06-08-2005, 09:28 PM
Actually, Usa, the pages do use invisible tables, so I'm not exactly sure what you mean.
And Rexy, I believe the banner is in its own table on the top, not centered in the right column. I just checked the site on 800x600 resolution and it looks okay to me. I can look at the extra long scrolling on some of the pages later, though. I might've messed that up.
And before I forget, let's welcome Bladiator to the project! He's picked up Last Battle from Symphonia. We're getting close to filling this thing up!
Maybe I didn't explain it good enough, so I'll try it again
OK, what I was referring to is that having to scroll horizontally is an absolute no-no for web design. Never, ever should a page need to scroll to the right to see everything on it. Many lucky people nowadays use 1024x768 or even higher (like mine, 1280 x 854, like you see on my screen shots) as their screen resolution, but to put it simple: Not everyone can. There is still a significant amount of people who use 800x600, or 832x624, and every good web designer should think about those fellas, as well :o This means the page contents should not be more than ~740 pixels in width. This is the main issue here, which seems to strike Rexy and surely some others, as well.
For me, with my widescreen display, the only problem is the vertical scrolling, that is induced on the main page by using a table that puts the buttons below the big banner at the top. That means, only half of the vertical space is left for the buttons, which should be on the left side, preferably centered. If you look closely at the test site I made and posted in my last forum post, you will notice that the buttons are left of the big banner, and centered vertically against the whole content. This means you don't have to scroll down on a smaller resolution and don't have to scroll at all on mine.
Maybe it would just help to resize the huge banner to a little bit smaller size, so everything would fit better. In my opinion, it literally kills the rest of the page because it's so big. That doesn't mean I don't like it. I think it's really beautifully designed, but just a tid bit too big :P
OK, hope now everyone understands what I mean - and btw. if you would incorporate the design I gave you, you should divide the left side of the table in two vertical pieces, the top one which contains the buttons with a fixed size, so the buttons don't get too low when you incorporate a longer text or other contents on the right side which are very scrolling-intensive :)

I just checked the site on 800x600 resolution and it looks okay to me.
I'm well aware that people have different screen resolutions and I can say with complete honesty that I did design the thing with that in mind - like Kyle, I don't see any horizontal scrolling.
If I had, I would have changed things.
Now, I am now having the issue of certain pages (banners) being able to scroll down far further than needed. When I did the initial HTML it looked fine, however, when I sent it to Kyle the page displayed askew on his end, so I can only assume that whatever caused that on his end was fixed but with the result of the longer page.
So as it looks like we're having issues with display on different browsers/computers, we'll just have to tweak it a bit. Patience, folks.

We have our best crew working on the website around the clock to iron out the bugs.
...Okay, not really. But we will look into the problems soon. Theoretically, the tables should resize themselves depending on the resolution (as happened for me, on two different computers at two different resolutions), but if they're not, something's wrong. Hopefully we can figure it out and fix this soon!

Just a few comments, this is probably one of my favorite RPG's ever (next to FF4). Also, I was one of the first people to get a mix posted of this game on the site (and still classic). I remember I completed it in like, 5 days over Spring break. I hope this project doesn't take a whole year, hehe.
I was disappointed to see there was not a complete list of songs. The original game has about 70 tracks (far from the short list you have). Arche's theme was one of my favorite themes and did not make it to your list.
If I can find free time (apart from working full time over the summer), I would love to remix several tracks from this game, probably several of which are not on your list.
Since I am certain some people will not follow through with this project, I recommend more flexibility on your track selection (I don't see why you don't include every track, like some other remix projects are doing).
Also, I am sure I will break several of rules of this project. I will most certainly distribute the finished version. You do not own the rights to my music, I am not getting paid for participating, and I believe in free distribution of music.
I don't mean to be hostile as a new participant in this project. However, I do believe less strict rules are in order, due to several reasons, for instance, the huge depth of the music of this game, the great variety of music (if you're going to pick specific tracks for the project, you need a specific theme for the project, not just TOP REMIX PROJECT). Also, we remixers, at least most of us, our amateurs. Also, I am sure everyone who has played this game has gotten something different out of it or enjoyed it in a different way. As the game offers something different for everyone, I believe every track that is remixed should offer something different for everyone. (I think blending them together is kind of dumb. It will only end up watering down the individual mixes)
Any single remix from this game could take many months to complete if done well. I think August 1 is a reasonable deadline for at least a WIP. I recommened you recruit massive amounts of people before the deadline though. :p (it seems you've been doing that already though)
~GLL
KyleJCrb
06-10-2005, 05:54 AM
I appreciate your suggestions, GLL, and as much as I would like to include the entire soundtracks from both of these games, there is already a huge amount of songs on the project as it is, and trying to cover the entire soundtracks would make it nigh unmanagable, and this project would surely fail. Not to mention, we're trying to cover TWO games, because both Lea and I feel that the two are connected enough to warrant having a project covering both of them. I hope you understand what we're trying to do here. ;)
Also, I think you misunderstand what we mean by not releasing finished works. The rule is in place to prevent the release of finished songs before the project is complete. The reason for this is, we would like keep a semblance of quality control among this project, and also keep an element of surprise for when the project is ultimately released. The rule doesn't mean never release your project songs anywhere else, ever; it means that, in the interest of keeping the project fresh and interesting when its released, and also maintaining some form of quality control, to not release your finished songs until the project is completed.

06-10-2005, 06:19 AM
Nice post. Actually, today I was thinking about you and this project because I was listening to your remix of "Be Absentminded" and was hoping the version that ends up on this project would be as good.
I was a little dismayed at the exclusion of certain especially good tracks too, and wasn't absolutely certain why there was a limit. Sure, we already have a lot of songs, but I don't doubt that even more remixers could readily be managed by two coordinators as attentive to the thread's developments as Kyle and Lea. I think the freedom that MP3 and Torrent distribution offers should be embraced. I mean, we don't have to consider how best to fill up the space on a little 700MB CD. There are certainly enough capable musicians to cover many songs, and there may even be people who are refraining from signing up because their favorite piece from one of the games is not on the tracklisting.
Of course, I didn't think myself to be in any position to challenge the boundaries of a project I didn't put any effort into organizing, though suggestions can never be a bad thing. Kyle and Lea selected tracks that made for a well-balanced album. One of them said something to the effect of, "Maybe this project will inspire new remixes of songs from the games that aren't on this project." That's true. I've already decided to make one that I will send into OCR independantly of this project, but I would prefer that my efforts go towards improving this already ambitious project. Imagine that, quality remixes of all those excellent songs.
I say, if there are people who are willing to put a lot of effort and time into working on songs to augment this project instead of their own personal OCR profiles, maybe a few rules should be broken?
PS: Definitely do not release anything in full before the project is done! That's so boring. You completely miss out on the feeling of having the torrent finish downloading and diving into the entire project, like buying a new album from your favorite band, eager to hear all the great stuff to come.

Alright, let's try something here. ON-THE-FLY RULE CREATION!
Lea and I just discussed this, and I think it's something that could make the people who want to do a track not listed on the project right now happy. What we've come up with is this: If you have already claimed or are planning to claim ONE song (those who currently have two tracks selected are exempt from this) for this project, then, once the track list is completely filled and all of the current tracks are claimed, we will allow you to choose ONE extra song not currently listed to remix for the project. If you decide that you can't do the extra track, it will be removed completely, with no chance of getting picked up by anybody else. This rule will go not go into effect until all of the main tracks listed are claimed by at least one person; reason being that we want to get what currently have filled up first, before we start adding things. Hopefully this might convince some of you to try and get some other people on board to fill up the list. Also, you must guarantee that you will ABSOLUTELY finish both of the tracks.
We're not trying to declare open season on the entire soundtracks of both of these games. This is just a compromise we have decided to make for those who wanted to do something that's not currently listed. One of our goals with this project is to still keep it maintainable and reasonable. We don't want to get overly ambitious.
Is this fair?

Bloody brilliant, I say!
That's a great idea. I love you. XD
The system will really keep the management simple and clean. The part about "if you can't do the track, it will be removed entirely". Very efficient!

Between both games, we'd be looking at almost 200 tracks. Even just focusing on one game would be too much, I think. :P
I like your rules addition very much, maybe I will pick up another song after finishing my first one. But it leaves one question open. If someome who is not yet listed wants to do a remix for the project and everything is taken already, what happens then?

Hi again! The sigs look great, nice and mystical. Great job Lea! I just wanted to ask, is it just me or do the nice pretty sigs not link properly to this thread? I've so far clicked the Luna and Raine sigs and I get an OCR login screen. So I login and then it says the thread I'm looking for doesn't exist.

As I explained in the first post of this thread, more than one person is able to claim a song. The song that ultimately makes it onto the project, out of the multiple remixes of the same track, will be decided on by myself and Lea. If our opinions either conflict or we agree that both of the remixes are good, we will put forth a voting procedure in which the people who are involved with the project will decide which version of the song will be on the final product (the voting is the likely scenario). In the case of a person who has claimed both a track currently listed and an alternate unlisted track going up against someone else; the alternate track will still be put on the project, regardless of the outcome of the coordinator/voter decision on the listed track.
I hope that makes sense. I just woke up. :P
EDIT: YES! Welcome to the project, Gray! :)

i`m silas and as usa already mentioned, i`d like to claim the song keen-edged blade. it`s the first time I claim a song from someone else and, actually, it`s not my style at all, but I`m really looking forward to this.. cu
OK, now it doesn't matter anymore because Silas chose "Keen-edged Blade", which is listed and so far unclaimed. I expect great things from him, I just love real recorded instruments :o

Still looking for people? What are your minimum qualifications? The reason I ask is because I'm a noob and I'd hate to be a liability on the quality of the project when it's completed. If I'm allowed to choose a theme, I'd probably consider doing "Martel" from ToP. In any case let me know if you think I'm up to standard. (Also, if anyone else with a proven track record wants to take the track, you should let them so as not to compromise the outcome).
Unfortunately, I won't be able to start any WIPs until June 19 (after the OCR Idol due date) but that's still long before the August 1 date.
I'm also one of those who has never completed either game, so I'd be composing from... well, with no predisposed notions.

Hey Arcana,
We're open to having anybody on the project, regardless of experience. Part of the idea behind this project is to help each other, so don't be afraid to contact myself, Lea, or anybody else involved (or even not involved) for their input, opinions, and/or feelings on what you're working on. We will help those with less experience to polish their tracks and hopefully make the songs something the arranger can be proud of when they're finished. :)
I've also added silas to the list. Welcome!

Well, I'll try to lay something down way in advance of the deadline so I can get some feedback, or possibly some collaborative help.
Also, the theme I chose is rather minimalistic, so I have a bit more room. Is the track order set in stone? (also, I am presuming we have a total length for the CD). One thing I'm concerned about is that my track is currently the last on the CD... but let me work on it and see if it's in fact worthy of that position.
Thanks!

The track order is pretty much set, though it may change slightly at any time. With the new rule we put into place earlier, and with PriZm planning on a 12 minute orchestral progressive rock piece for Final Destination, it's looking more and more like this will be a 4-CD set..., so the length isn't really a factor. Some people mentioned that having Martel's theme as the last track of the Phantasia part will be difficult for the mixer on it, since it's so short and minimalistic. If that turns out to be the case, we can make some adjustments. I think you can handle it, though. ;)

A 4CD Set! That's pretty cool.
Just to let you know, my remix will be of considerable length as well. The form is looking to work out to at least 7 minutes right now, and will probably get longer. Something tells me XMark's Sylphis mix will be pretty long too.

Damn it, I got suX0rred. :D
I'm planning to perhaps incorporate another theme in there and use the basis of the theme as background... I'm listening to the rest of the soundtrack to see if there are good recurring main themes that would fit into it. Even then, a minimalistic theme is probably not such a bad thing to work with, because then it gives me an excuse not to have a large, bombastic, dramatic track with tons of production and stuff. ;)

Hehe, it looks like you have a good handle on where to go with your track, Usa. Keep it up!
Usa, I'll see if i can burn your WIP to disc and listen to it tomorrow sometime. I'm often interested in seeing how you come along ^^
And yeah, I know this is a little bit off-topic here, but I really want to release something at VGMix on Sunday, however I don't know what to put forward. >.< I have my first 2 WIPs at VGMix and my DoD entry to choose from; they'll eventually get released over the summer, but I can't decide what to put out there first. Major bummer. :whatevaa:
That aside, even though I am in an unstable state to work on music over the summer I've still been able to send the Fighting of the Spirit closing track towards Kyle a few weeks back. And now, I've been able to extract a portion of the recording and render a demo (http://rexy.herograw.com/fighting-spirit-sample.mp3) of what I've done to share with the masses.
And yeah... all these prog-like tracks have made it fitting for longer mixes than the usual. But hey, thank goodness virt isn't involved or we'd have a 40-minute rendition of The Law of the Battle.

Heh, I think most of the animosity has been diminished. There's probably still a little bit around, but not enough to make a big impact on the community.
And on that note: Come on, people! We only need 3 more to fill this out, and really get the remixing stage under way.
Also, just a small reminder for everyone: Please review the rules on the front page. Not that anybody is breaking them or anything; there have just been a few new additions to them, such as this:
When your song is finished, you must provide a full, raw .WAV file of it. This will ensure maximum quality for the CD torrent when the project is released. (MP3s will be made available on the website)
Thanks!
I think I have a WAV somewhere, may take a while to find it though. Bleh.
But yeah, we still need 3 more filled spots out there. We need it ;)

Hey Arek,
We would love to have you as part of the project, but unfortunately, it seems you've overlooked a tiny detail; as cool as it would be, we're not covering every single song from both of these games. On the first page, there's a list of specific songs that are available to remix for this project, but "Walking on Tethe'alla" isn't one of them. :(
However, not all hope is lost quite yet! You'll notice in the first post that there is a certain "rule" that will be going into effect shortly. This rule will allow those who have claimed one song currently on the list to choose another track of their choice (that is not listed) from either game. Luckily for you, a couple songs are still open, so please read and understand the rules on the first page fully, and we'll gladly have you on board. :)
And yeah, the linking to those kinds of sites is frowned upon.

Since we are getting extremely close to almost completely filling this project, I have decided to initiate phase two: The remixing stage. I have also started locking down certain tracks, which means that that the remixer on the track has proven to have a good handle on their ideas and arrangement, and has shown that they have a likely chance of completing their work. The lock also means that the tracks are no longer available for anybody else to pick up (unless the person who currently has the track claimed drops out), for the reasons specified. Good luck to all of you, and I'll be doing my part in keeping up with those involved to ensure that the project reaches completion!
Also, the new "additional track" rule should be going into effect within the next day or two, so if you plan on picking up something not listed, give it some thought and be prepared!

Just to let you know that I actually AM working on my piece, I've decided to throw away the piece's 3/4 measure and inserted a typical 6/8, which gives me a better base for a symphonic rock beat. Your transition at :11 is bad because its non existant. Start by making one :p. The beginning is nice, but I would hold a string chord for the tonal ambience. Well since there are gonna be many live instruments in this project, I might suggest the use of an actual guitar.
It's true the transition is bad; you have to lengthen this intro and add something to link it to the actual song (snare roll, strings arpeggio ? hmmmm), and definitely add a crash cymbal when all starts. In the intro I head a bass synth and a lead one starting together, and that's kinda brutal. You could fade in that bass synth and then start with the lead one, or start with the lead one alone and then add the bass one, depending on what kind of feeling you want. Also, I think the idea of 5/8 is mighty cool but doesn't fit the intro well, because there are no drums and it feels just off. Perhaps doing this bit in 6/8 would be better? anyways that's just me.
Cool bass groove, cool time signature, cool strings samples: this looks very promising. I'm a sucker for odd times so you got me there. I might suggest adding velocities to the hi-hat though because it sounds very much artificial as is. Maybe adding some very quiet 16th notes to the 8th note pulse would be cool, I dunno, it's your song. And maybe you've thought of that already since it's a baby WIP. Oh well...
Hot shit so far. Soraya and I could both record answering guitar parts ;)

It was brought to my attention that Castle of the Dhaos would be difficult for even a skilled musician to remix, and if you listen to it, it does sound pretty strange. There will be a song (or possibly two) put in its place, but I'm not sure what yet; I have to talk to a few people about it. *coughGhettoLeeLewiscough* ;)
Also, if you remember the original written rule correctly, those who already have two songs (or more, but that's not the case right now) claimed are exempt from the ability to choose an unlisted song. I did that because I don't believe it'd be fair for one person to have a bunch of songs like that; it'd be much better to change it up a bit so there's an all-around better mix of people (and therefore, styles) on the final project.

EDIT 2: Teliskopic; try clicking mine again. I just changed the link.
