Excellent, but that isn't much of a surprise, is it? ;)

Sweet.
More incentive to do a TJ&E mix. I'm sure you'd agree djp, we're in dire need of some more :D
[Don't worry, after the ToP remixes, I'll get right down to business, ha!]
Anyways, this song is excellent.

Oh, you'd like that, wouldn't you?
Very funky! I love to hear interesting basslines, made all the more interesting by the fact that I am considering a purchase of Trilogy. Seems like a nice little package! Back to the mix, I enjoyed the flowing feeling of it, and particularly liked the way you closed it off. Great use of synths as usual.

A little treasure to add to my collection... :)!! For some reason funk seems like the perfect choice for Starfox. It's cool, but not too serious. Classy, but fun. Spacey, but... okay, you get the idea. And the samples you chose are excellent, i.e. the lead synth with the wobbly vibrato. This'll sound great back-to-back with Love Hurts!
I love StarFox. This game was always great! The style of this song is really djpretzel. Because HE IS the busy body. Your last ReMix 'The Sveldt' (http://www.ocremix.org/detailmix.php?mixid=OCR01310) is a example of what I like of his ability. And hey, this new ReMix by you really reminds me of Toe Jam & Earl. For some reason, this song remember another Shinobi´s ReMix too. Stuff of high quality. Is my favourite on these days.

So this was the mix you were talking about eh? Very good. Really makes me wish we had more Starfox remixes...

Thank you! I've been waiting for another remix like Shinobi! Very sweet.

I really like the separation that this mix has. Everything takes up its own space in the sonic field, and nothing interferes with anything else. It's really neat to isolate each of the individual parts throughout the whole piece, and hear what they're all doing. It's all very well thought-out and varied, and the way everything lines up and works together (think 0:54) is brilliant. Even with somewhat limited instrumentation, everything locks in and never gets boring.
I'd like to say it's your best piece yet... but then again, you also did Pachebel's Ganon. :nicework:

I have been waiting for someone to do a Fortuna remix! (I was trying it myself actually) Thanks a bunch! It's really good!

A nice remix, I like the funky groove :-) There's probably a little too much 16-bit "noise" but since that's not often it's ok. However, well done.
Hell, I'm always looking forward on Starfox remixes.

Y'know, DJP, you always have this incredibly disctint "style" that you seem to adhere to in all your mixes. Your G&G mix, and your sonic mix are perfect examples. It is prevalent in this one as well. Very funky groove, a kickin' mix. I've been kinda sick of all these melancholy FF mixes lately, it was nice to hear your mix as change of pace. Keep up the great work, man.

That bass is killing my speakers and I love it; wait, and what's this!? A crazy delayed funkadelic Rhodes solo!
Please, Pretzel, don't hurt 'em.

Each new funk piece DJP releases is better than the last, and this one is no exception. Even on my crappy laptop speakers, I'm finding that my head is DJPing by itself. I can't wait to blast this on my subwoofer.
Funkalicious work.

Damn. This pops. My whole room should be bouncing up and down to this; if it were to, I wouldn't be surprised at all.

Yes, this one goes in "The Folder".
Clavinet is such an awesome instrument, so often forgotten in the collective shadow of the harpsichord and Hammond organ. It is used by DJP, hurray! As his particular brand of electro-funk grows ever-stronger!

Its good to hear some new Pretzel Organ and synth. Brings back memories of Love Hurts.
Keep up the great quality work.
I expect you to deliver great again.

I liked everything except for those claps. They were really distracting, especially with the contant changing from on the beat to off the beat to short and logn claps and then random break beat claps. It might have soudned better with a different sample maybe :-/

This mix is excellent! In fact, I love ALL the funk mixes from this site.
Is it me, or does some parts early in the song seem to skip... :?
Anyway, just so you composers know...people (maybe just me) dance to these funk mixes, so keep em' comming. Its like these mixes are made for popping and locking.

Holy crap, do I love this. At least, I did. For some reason, after listening to it for about two minutes, it starts to get boring. . . I'm not entirely sure how else to explain it. It just sort of gets dull after the first half of the song. But then again, there's not much to work with in the first place.
But anyway, nice job.
And yeah. I didn't feel like a full-fledge review. Sorry.
Oddity
06-06-2005, 02:54 PM
I didn't think it was anything special at first, listening through these crappy speakers. Then I listened with headphones and the sound quality shot way up and could hear so much more power. Then on top of that the whole mix started piecing together and not just sounding like one dull sound happening over and over--repetitious as the guy above me might be experiencing. It's like a section of the piece was added to the song when switching to headphones, probably because by the time that part around the song had been sort of blocked from my head, which sometimes happens with songs on first or second listens.
I wish the solo was gone about a bit differently. Its ending with the 16th triplets just made it sound like some really generic solo from DJP.
Is it me, or does some parts early in the song seem to skip... :?
HAHAHHAHAHA
I bet I know what that is. There's a pretty prominent percussion sample used on a 16th offbeat which made me think something was wrong the first couple of times it happened. I had gotten used to it on the speakers, but even more so on the headphones to where it seemed to fit perfectly. Just count by fours to the whole song and eventually you'll find out there's no skipping.

Love it, as others have said it has gone into my folder! The only thing that I wasnt so keen on was the lead synth sound but thats the only thing that stuck out the rest superb. I think I'll have another listen now! It really takes me back I think I'll crack out my copie of starwing (fortuna was on the hard rout wasnt it? with those funky water dino things, as well as large plant flower things??)

Y'know, DJP's getting on, and I was beginning to think he just might've been over it ... then I heard this track :) The man still has it, and we are all better off for it. First track I downloaded at my new residence.

Quite a bit o' chez, man. Almost too much. Needs more funk and less chez. Kinda reminds me of a haunted house or SotN or something...whoa, the end is sweet. Where's more of that?

I love this one almost as much as Love Hurts. Perhaps more. Heck, I'll just say that I like them both equally. I love the great rhythms in this song and just the overall funky-spacey feel. I was a little disappointed, though, that the off-beat 16th notes stopped after only a few plays at the beginning. It confused me for a bit as I wasn't sure if I'd heard them correctly or not the first time through.

Still my favourite...
DO A BARREL ROLL!
Funky.
It reminds me of the Ghost Houses from Super Mario World slightly in terms of musical themes but more in a terms of atmosphere.
The first half has too much of a white noise feel. Aurally, the soundscape isn't too vary to much, feel's repetitive. If you're looking for something funky to spice up your day, then check this out. Otherwise I remain a solid neutral in opinion about this; it's not bad but neither is it spectacular or groundbreaking.

Okay, before you dis this comment for being irrelevant, I must point out that a Title is a big part of a piece of music, it forms the music's identity before the music is even heard!
"Fortuna Favors the Funk" is an amazing accomplishment of titling.
For those who feel that despite my argument this comment is still obnoxiously irrelevant, I listened to the music and as far as I can tell, it's a good example of funk!
everything was solid except for the weird timing on some of the snare hits- i kept thinking a beat was being dropped. :/
Sorry DJP, can't get into this one that much, even though it's 90% great. :-(

Ah yes. I remember this one. Pretty fondly, I might add.
A great blend of spacey tones on that sporadic sort of funk that OCR is no stranger to. I like the boldness of the direction; there is no ambiguity of what this piece was meant to achieve, and it's easy to appreciate the straightfoward approach. I can see a point of contention when it comes to percussion, but most of the time I coast over that anyway, so I don't think it's very fair for me to lambaste that.
I don't think this is the style of mix that can get noticably repetitive, myself. And even if I did, I think this is a wonderfully varied ride through space with funky accompaniment. It's by no means the most potent or complex mix that djp has ever come out with, but hey, it doesn't have to be. I still regard it pretty highly.
