For the record, the idea for this project was thought up by Arek without knowledge of Rise of the Star prior to its release (although how he didn't know about Rise of the Star is anyone's guess O_o;).
So no, it's not a Kirby copycat project. End of story.

Or are you just saying it so people don't start thinking it's a copycat project?
Exactly.

I may be able to help with line art if neccessary. I've made many pictures for I, Mario and this is a nice change of pace.
If you wanna see examples:
A Snifit (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v673/AmazingTrout/SnifitClean.jpg)
Bowser's Palace (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v673/AmazingTrout/BowsersPalaceCompletedAnterior.jpg)
And a Kirby picture I doodled for that Art Rage thread a while back. (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v673/AmazingTrout/Derivitive%20Art/kirby.jpg)
Sadly Super Star is just about the only Kirby game I haven't played all the way through. So I'll need to do a bit of research.

Hello people, KWarp here. As Arek said before, I'm co-running this project with him. Seems like I'll be primarily managing the artisty side of project. Very few details have been worked out with the art it this point, and I'm not about to throw out requirements without hearing what the artists would like to do first.
Speaking of which, those who are skeptical about how the storybook will work out should take a look at this Flash Storybook Interface. (http://www.kwarp.com/demo.html)
Arek, can you add that link to your first post as well? Things would be a great deal easier.

As most of you can see, this is going ot be more than just a "Pick a song, remix it, and thats it" sort of project. We are planning on making this something great.
We are putting a lot of effort into this, and I hope that most of you will join in and add to the fun.
Thanks again guys.
OK, as I already said, I'll take Dynablade Area 1 [Floria] - I won't be able to start on this before the next 4-5 weeks, though. I hope that's not a problem. Oh yeah, and if anyone needs a piano track for his/her mix, I offer my help here, as well (but I can only do it after I am back, so please bear with me)

Question: About how long should we be aiming for with these tracks? A couple minutes? And each track is a chapter? And to each chapter, you will set in some kid friendly theme story of each stage? Should we just wait then, for the exacts of the story, and then start working on the music, etc?
What is the workflow going to be like, is my general question, I guess.
I guess for my chapter...Kirby goes into peaceful place and saves his game...that's...well that's pretty simple. Anyway, I've got some stuff done. That's about it.
Oh and, IF I manage to make any time, I could help you with artwork, probably later on...I'm actually better at that than music. So we will see I guess.
KWarp
07-09-2005, 06:56 AM
There are two options I've been thinking about for the music and how it will fit into the project.
1) We can make the book scroll along like a movie, and coordinate each chapter in time with its remix.
2) Or, we can give the viewer more freedom to flip where they want to once the text is done scrolling (or before it's done even). They can stick around and listen to the remix, or move through as they please.
I'm probably going to fall towards option 2 as I strongly doubt we can write a plot that takes as long to read as an hour of music. Even if we could, most viewers would become really bored by then. All the music from the storybook will probably be released seperately as an album anwyay.
There's also the possibility for remixers to make a full song for the album and a shorter version for the storybook. How would you guys (the musicians) feel about that? :?

The code is really something isn't it? I was pretty lucky to have found it. It's a bit glitchy if you're not careful though (for example, the text on the cover page disappears when the page is turning).

The remix list has been updated.
To monobrow, I am in full agreement with Kwarp. We can let it be so that the reader themself has a choice in either listening to the full mix or just continuing on. Though, again as Kwarp suggested, it would be cool if you crazy remixers come up with a shorter version of your songs for the book...but I really don't know how all that would work properly :?

*sigh* Kirby :)
You know, Kirby's Dream Land was the first video game I ever beat? Good memories. My brother was always stuck at Dee Dee Dee and couldn't figure out how to beat him. I fealt so proud when I was able to tell him I beat the game on my own. Me and brother always had a huge video game rivalry. Kirby always brings back great memories. Whatever you need me to draw, just ask.

I'd be interested in mixing one of the songs, but gimme a minute cause I need to relisten to them.
*lol* Thanks for the fast feedback! I'm kinda having some kind of creative frenzy right now. I'm almost done with the next part already, it will continue the guitar strums in the background, and a solo violin takes over the next part. Without expression in the violin play, I could already post it here, but I don't feel like it, it sounds soooo mechanical *lol* but the most important thing: I got hold of my ideas and put them into the sequencer :) And that's what counts! I can always refine it later...

KWarp
07-10-2005, 01:45 AM
Yeah, the drawing style is quite undecided for now. There's really two directions we can go with that:
1) We can pursue a graphic style similar to Kirby's Dreamland 3. (http://www.classicgaming.com/kirby/games/dreamland3/) The style here looks like it was drawn by a kid with a box of crayons. It would fit very nicely into the kind of project we're doing, but it's also a somewhat difficult style to draw in.
http://www.classicgaming.com/kirby/games/dreamland3/screens/image.png
2) We can stick with the full-color style that made Kirby Super Star (http://www.classicgaming.com/kirby/games/superstar/) so distinguishable. Color here is thick, lush, and very balanced. This is probably something artists would have an easier time drawing considering the source material is in the same style.
http://www.classicgaming.com/kirby/games/superstar/screen/13.jpg
Personally, I'd lean towards #2 because that's how I like to draw. What do you guys think?

Kwarp and I have been talking, and we believe it would be best if we started the writing sometime next month. He will be out of town for a month, so we will not all be able to gather in a group for what we are planning.
oh and before I forget, I am scrapping my story. I want to work with the writers personally so that we can create awesome chapters one a time, though again it won't start till sometime next month.
Thank you for your patience in the matter writers!
Kwarp and the rest of you guys, keep up the friggin goodwork!
EDIT: I like the idea for #2 of kwarps suggestion. it would really fit well with the Kirby superstar feel. Again, keep up the awesome stuff guys. without you, this wouldn't be here ^_^

07-10-2005, 02:06 AM
I always thought the style from Dreamland 3 always seemed like the best visual representation for Kirby from an artistic perspective, but I don't really mind what's used. It could be the Art Deco style Darkesword wanted for his project for all I care.
I just don't wanna start working on artwork until I have a firm grasp of understanding for what I'm going to be drawing.

We REALLY appreciate all of you guys wanting to be part of this, but we really do not want to over complicate things with having too many people. We might have some sort of screening process, but that still up to discussion.
Sorry guys, but worry not! Just show us what you can do, and we will most likely keep ya.

Hello there all, I'm a friend of Arek. I've pretty much joined the OCRemix forums for the sole purpose of helping with this project, I will be a co-art coordinator for this project along with KWarp.
Now, that the introduction is done with...
The direction that we're currently looking to go with for the art, since this is going to end up being a sort of children's story book type thing, is sort of a crayon-ish Kirby Dreamland 3 look with little white paper cut-out backgrounds around the characters sort of like this:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v236/carefreecaptain/Mahoraba_ep3.jpg
KWarp and I agree that this will give this project sort of a uniqueness to the art. I'll post a tutorial on how to create this effect in photoshop in a day or so. And if needs be, I can do the effect for other people.

Very nice. I like the rotation of the instruments. One minor gripe: the pauses feel sorta empty until the guitar jumps in on beat 4. Since the tempo is so slow, it sorta stands out. I know the remix is supposed to be laid back and such, but the pauses just sound empty. The original had all the drum stuff going on to fill said pauses. Then again, I'm nitpicking. Maybe you'll want to change that, maybe not. :?

I'd like to do "BEgin Treasure Hunting"
As it's very similar to Green Greens (if I am getting the song right. Anyone have an mp3 to confirm)
To thw WIP: I like it, but your samples really suck for the clarinet and (piccolo)? The bassoon sounds amazing and really full, which seems a little out of place. Otherwise... I love it.
I think treasure hunting will be for guitar, piccolo, xylophone and something else maybe. We'll see :)

Maybe I can do something about the flute and the clarinet by adding more dynamics to them. I also have another clarinet sound with hefty vibrato, but I think it's a bit out of place in an arrangement like this. I prefer the simple one. Of course, the whole mix would sound much better if it would have been played on real instruments...but I only have that keyboard, so I have no other choice :)
I think the pauses in the original are the same, no drums and no other sound until beat 4, sometimes there is a drum fill with one hit before beat 4, but most of the time it's as empty, and with all the drums and other thingies going on in the original, I think the pause is even more noticable there.
But a friend of mine whom I showed the WIP a few hours ago also disliked it, but could not give me a reason for it, he said he didn't like the rhythm and also doesn't like the melody too much.
Oh yeah, and by the way, I will add percussion to the later parts of the mix, just the beginning is so laid-back (and I think this is kinda cool in some way)

You're absolutely right. The main difference lies in the fact that your mix is (I'm guessing) 112 BPM and the original is (also guessing) 184 BPM. As a result, one beat of rest in your piece is .5357 seconds, whereas a beat of rest in the .spc is but .3261 seconds, making your pause (even though it is the same number of beats) 164% as long in real time. But some drums and other percussion should alleviate that feeling of hanging and give the song a smoother feel.
Yes, I'm a nerd.

Okay, this is my wip for the save point...it's a piano lullaby thingy...I need to refine my piano mastering a lot, and do some things about a couple of parts...ESPECIALLY 0:59...I may need to tone down on the reverb a tad too..but anyway, this is just basically me putting notes down. :-)
Very well done, Monobrow! I really enjoy your WIP, especially the spaciousness of the sound! Keep it up :)
And, for mine, I just upped the first WIP of the second part, and oh yeah, got a chord wrong in the first one, this is fixed now, as well...Enjoy! (http://www.informatik.uni-bremen.de/~dlippert/Floria-WIP2.mp3)
Thanks...yeah I usually do stuff that has a huge amount of stuff going on...so I tried this for a change...To keep it simple, but not overly boring. I just hope I can end it in a way I'm happy with. I'm trying to go for some notes being off...as if a child was playing it...though some parts of the song have a more mature sound to them. I'm about half and half here...
About your WIP: I did notice how the chord was wrong in the first WIP actually, but I just took it as "artistic" license or something...Nice to hear it the way it was in the original though. I am liking what I hear so far...it certainly has a light and carefree style. Maybe that in itself just rubs your friend the wrong way...I myself like it.
Edit: The pause with the guitar is fine too...it just reminds the listener that this is a light hearted kirby mix...I myself think this mix is just the right tempo...it leaves enough time for each instrument to be explored in their little way, then in the silence of the guitar transition, the next instrument jumps in. It expresses simplicity, I guess.
I also like that violin instrument...it's very charming, especially when it goes a tad off key. For some reason, it makes me think of Sim City...strange...but anyway, nice.

I'd rather do AIM.
I've discovered there are quite a few people out there that still don't understand what the point of this project is, so here's the goal explained in the simplest of terms.
OK, the point of this project is to take the Milky Way Wishes chapter from Kirby Super Star, and retell its story in the form of a child-friendly storybook.
Arek, you'll probably want to put that at the very top of your first post.
You're absolutely right. The main difference lies in the fact that your mix is (I'm guessing) 112 BPM and the original is (also guessing) 184 BPM. I'd like to do "BEgin Treasure Hunting"
As it's very similar to Green Greens (if I am getting the song right. Anyone have an mp3 to confirm)
Nope. You're way off. The song that sounds like Green Greens is called Later Treasure Hunting, and it ain't in this project. :?

Well, I have two ideas...
1) Draw and color it with crayons and scan it :p
2) Use a brush in your CG program that gives a sort of crayon-ish look to your picture.
And I'm sure people who use illustrator have even better tools ^-^.

Try looking for pastels -- preferably chalk pastels. They allow greater control than real crayons if you're gonna do it by hand. And you should be able to find some free plug-ins or something for Photoshop. Art Rage had a nice pastel brush, though I can't remember the link, but basically it's a free (exeedingly) watered down version of Corel Painter.
EDIT: Found the link. (http://www.ambientdesign.com/artrage.html)

I really dunno what to do, I really really want to arrange for this project! I was there from the beginning.

Argh... what a distressing situation.

Worry not dear sir! I still wonder why you can't find Begin Treasure Hunting. You try looking at the RSN file?
Anyhow, I am saving the ending theme for pixietricks. I want it to be the coup de grace...or something. Just a really good ending to the project, which I know she will do perfectly. If you wish to work with her on it, that would be cool. Just PM or something and work something out :)

Alright I'll be signed up for begin treasure hunting I think. I'm really liking the idea of doing piccolo, light percussion, guitar and some xylophone.
I'm warning, I dunno what I'll do about production. I'm a classical musician, not really familliar with production (I can use fruity loops but I"m not amazing). I'll probably record the piccolo part (hopefully!) but we'll see...
I may need help with that.
So yeah, begin treasure hunting (hotbeat) is mine!
Hmm...Marx theme in children's style is a bit tough. Im brainstorming and experimenting for the time being. Any suggestions would be superb.
lightwarmth
07-11-2005, 02:15 AM
My suggestion is taking a peek at what some children's movies do for the darker/battle tracks. My impression is make it COMICALLY dark. Look at yoshi's story OST - that would be an EXCELLENT reference for this project. The dark tracks are... well... it's dark but only a 'rainy bad day' type dark, if that makes sense. Stick to lighter instrumentation, avoiding electric guitars and stuff. Swelling, quiet strings with a lead more comical xylophone, I dunno.
Just my idea :)
(to confirm, Hotbeat is MINE now, and I have ideas. Will start work tomorrow)

Hey, I've been just laying out the melody from the .rsn (havent made any substantial progress YET. ), and, a few questions came to mind. Firstly, do you have any deadlines planned (first wip, final deadlines, ect.), and, are there deadlines for the writers? As I move into writing my song, I would like to see what the writer writing chapter 2 (or whatever Grape Garden is in) will be writing so I can push my song toward the feel of that chapter.
Sorry if these are idiodic questions. I'll have a WIP probably within the next week or imediately after (just really busy this week).
Thanks.

Well, there are no deadlines set yet. KWarp and I have yet to really get into details about that since this project is still in its "baby" phase. Expect, however, deadlines to pop up some time next week.
Writing, as some of you know, won't start until next month when KWarp gets back from his scheduled trip.
If you want to wait for chapter two to be made before you start your mix, I see no problem with it.
EDIT: Yes, there will be a deadline for writers as well. As soon as KWarp gets back, we are going to have to go into writing with full force. Don't worry, just because I am a writer does not mean I am not going to give them sympathy :)

About Marx's theme, you probably shouldn't go for too dark. I think I'll draw the line at Baby Bowser's (final) theme for Yoshi's Island. Anything darker than that is a little too scary for anyone. 8O

Er... I PMed KWarp regarding an artist position, and he instructed me to post my art here for more opinions...
Anyway, here are two quick things I've done; one took 10 minutes or so and the other 30. I usually spend around 5-10 hours on something.

If the lineart or colouring seems very basic, it's because of how long I spent on them. My serious stuff is more polished. If you want non-Kirby examples of lines and colouring, here are two:

In my opinion, if you can keep the quality of work you have in the second two, you would be a great addition to the team... there are a lot of pictures to draw (I think) so Im sure there are quite a bunch of positions.
Anywho, on a site note, the ost for Marx is in some crazy time signature which I cant easily recognize, so Im going to bend it a bit and change it to 3/4 time.

Awesome example. That is sort of how I was thinking it. Something dark, but not too dark.
Man....it would be a kick ass tune to hear all extremely darkish and such. I wouldn't mind if someone made a remix just for the heck of it of this theme :)
Edit: I see no problem with his stuff. He is in if you say so. As we said earlier though, I think we are pretty much done recruiting artists and writers.
Ah, Giant Baby Bowser...it wont be anything like that actually. Im probably going to do more of a dramatic symphonic/electronia hybrid, but not quite as dark at that song.
I find that the mood is half the problem with remixing this. Dont get me wrong, I'll do it good ( ) but, I ususally like to make laid back ambient grooves, where here I'm gonna have to go really happy go lucky and... yeah.
It's good to know I have time before a first deadline is even set. I'll probably have a WIP before that happens.

Alright, just to make sure, these are the following who currently have submitted WIP's:
DJBren
Usa
Monobrow
Time to critique them all for fun :). These won't be serious "deep" critique's more as just critique's to show that I appreciate your work. Also, if they suck, don't mind them. I am really tired and am lacking in brain capacity.
Monobrow: Your track has that "mysterious aura". It fits perfectly with the level that it is associated with. I am happy that you chose to create it that way. The planet sort of emits this "?" sort of feel, which I suppose is why the planet is named that :) Fits perfectly. :nicework:
Usa: Your track fits perfectly with level one. It is an upbeat song, and an upbeat level as well. Kirby has to constantly "change the weather" by going through one door multiple times, which makes it a level that you won't stop moving in. Fits very nicely. :nicework:
DJBren: Very nice track. It maintains the same dark feeling that you get when you fight Marx. I can just imagie Marx slowly flying down as the beginning of the song plays, and when the snare rolls, I can imagine him doing his laugh/cackle and beginning the fight. :nicework:
Good job to all of you. Keep up the good work!
 Wooow, there REALLY have been some postings while I was sleeping nicely :) As I awakened there were almost twice the pages that were there before on this thread... Oh yeah, and thanks for everone on their comments!
You really think it sounds like hanging or something? It's totally OK to me (or I would have changed it in the first place), but maybe I will add some woodblocks to the second repetition of the first part to keep it even more interesting. And yeah, the woodblocks on my keyboard are the way cutest woodblock sounds I've ever heard, they fit into the genre very very well!
Yes, in fact I slowed it down because I wanted to do these instrument changes to make it sound more cheeky and playful. I think so far everything is right, but - reading that you heard the wrong chord in the first WIP - can you maybe help me here on the chords at the very end of the second WIP, something on them sounds wrong, but not too wrong, so I can't hear it (I am absolutely not an expert when it comes to notation, chords and musical theory, I still have to learn a lot there).
Oh yeah, and Lightwarmth: You really think the flute sounds totally bad? It's not a piccolo, though (the piccolo I have on my keyboard sounds worse than the regular flute played higher). I think it sounds better than many sample CDs I know of. I could try and move it down an octave, though and test if it works out. I could also make a few notes of it a bit off-key to add to the childish-ness :)
Again, thanks, everyone for their comments!
To me, the chords sound fine until 0:57, where it gets a little jumbled. Maybe the reason they dont sound 'right' is because the song wants something new, something different than the guitar playing the harmony for part 2. Since you have a violen playing the melody, maybe the flute could play the harmony for part 2  *shrug* who knows it might actually work. Experiment and see what you like most. By the way, I really like the way you decided to take yours, it reminds me of green greens when I listen to it.

It's definitely not a matter of instrumentation, it's in the chords, specifically the last 6 ones, not counting in the very last 2, they are absolutely right, I can hear that. And yeah, the violin needs some improvement, I know this and maybe will work on it today. I also had an idea of a cute woodblock (yeah, there actually happens to be something like that) in the portions of the theme that are played by the bassoon.

I may as well toss my 2 cents in.
Usa: Great stuff, I really like what you're doing. Keep moving in that direction.
Monobrow: This fits the mood very well too. The 2nd half could use some work though.
DJBren: I like the direction you're going in, but that's waaaaay too bass heavy to be healthy. It also doesn't seem very exciting at this point. Hopefully you have a plan for that.
While I'm at it I may as well spill my ideas as to how the art will play out. These are ideas, not art directions (yet).
-In Milky Way Wishes, the start menu has 19 powers. We'll probably illustrate all of those.
-I also think each planet/chapter should have it's own illustration. So that's around another 7.
-There a couple "movie scenes" at the begining and end of Milky Way Wishes. If possible I'd like all of those illustrated.
-We might illustrate the bosses (see below)
BIG PROBLEM!!!
At the end of every Milky Way Wishes planet, Kirby encounters a boss. Every time, the same boss music plays (the RPG boss has a slight variation though). Now, we have 3 options with dealing with this:
1) Drop the boss battles: I'd rather not have this happen as it leaves plotholes in the story and makes the overal plot a lot less interesting since there's no action till the end. Not a good way to make a project.
2) We have 1 remix of the boss music and play it at each battle: Egh, I don't like this option either. The project will look cheap if we reuse music.
3) Each boss gets their own remix: This option isn't the easiest, but it looks like the best one. Milky Way Wishes has a diverse array of planets, and similarly, a diverse array of bosses. This means there is a diverse array of potential remixes. Among the bosses, Kirby fights Whispy Woods, a whale, Kracko, a chameleon, a temple spirit, Heavy Lobster, and an RPG engine. That should be just enough variety for this option to work. How do you guys (the remixers) feel about this?

I like this one the best. You can do a theme in many different music styles! For example, I could do the boss theme in the same style as the Floria theme, with guitar strumming, flutes and the like. What do you think?
KWarp
07-11-2005, 11:49 AM
Ha! Now that's something I like! Why not have the remixer that's covering the said planet also cover their own version of the Boss Battle theme in the same style? Awesome idea Usa. :D
Keep in mind that these boss themes only need to (and probably should) be a minute or two. A mini-remix per say. :P
OK, WIP time once again (http://www.informatik.uni-bremen.de/~dlippert/Floria-WIP3.mp3)!
I changed a lot of things, refined a lot of things, tried different things and ended up almost the same as before. I'm not yet 100% content with what I got, but I am very satisfied with the outcome of the second section, which is new in this WIP.
For now, I left the wrong chords at the end of the violin passage untouched, I hope someone can get a hint for me, or else I am forced to do it myself by trial-and-error.
I added slightly detuned-ness to the flutes and the clarinet, and I think it sounds more realistic now.
As always, any comments are welcome! :)

As to the boss idea, that is a cool idea to make the remixer of said planet cover it's boss theme. I don't think I have a planet (not sure) so it's all good (less remixing for me is good as long as I get one song...)

You can absolutely count me in, and hey, there aren't that much additional songs because of the new rule. I think we can handle this, especially if we keep the same style.
Dont worry KWarp, as I said, this is an early WIP mainly covering the foundation of the song. Ill be working on eq and such, and varying the parts to make it more interesting once I finish the song's first cycle.

In Milky Way Wishes, Kirby finds permanent copy abilites on each planet. I think the ones that go with the planet will also go with the storybook chapters.

I could animate jpegs if you ever so desired. :P The problem is that I have to work around the storybook interface. It gets a bit glitchy if I add in animations. You're better off sticking with static images.
Remember, since we're working with storybook pages, all the art is probably going to be at a 3:4 ratio (turn a TV on it's side to get the desired page dimensions). Speaking of which, how big do you guys want the pages to be? I think the demo's 300x400 is way too small for this. (Can anyone with 800x600 computer resolution tell me how much of their screen the demo consumes?)
Oltri

If the pictures were to be animated gifs, there'd be a lot of colour and quality loss =\ I agree with KWarp about keeping them as static images, animations would be too much of a hassle to get working correctly.

Concering Flash and Sound Compression
I probably should have talked about this sooner. Here's how it works. Let's say you've made a
30 Meg wav file <goes through mp3 compression> 3 Meg mp3 file <goes through Flash mp3 compression> 300k!!!!
I don't know how Flash does it, but Flash will cut the filesize 10 to 1 without any quality loss from the mp3. Here's the catch: Flash won't compress mp3s with bitrates higher than 160kbps Stereo. Moreover I don't know how it works with variable bitrates (I'm looking into it).
Judging from the bitrates of mp3s from Rise of the Star, this could be a problem. There is an alternative however.
It's called Raw. This option will not compress the sound at all, and naturally, filesize remains pretty big. Options are 5, 11, 22, and 44kHz.
I've been doing some tests for the past hour with Raw compression it seems using it won't impact the project's filesize a much as I feared. At most 20 meg wav files will be 2 megs. I'll continue to look into this.
Bottom line is: if you can make your final song at 160kbps or less, you'll shave off a couple megs (per song) from the final project. At this point it seems a seperate album release is definate.

I don't know how Flash does it, but Flash will cut the filesize 10 to 1 without any quality loss from the mp3.
I'm sorry to tell you but this is impossible without losing quality...

5 kHz? You must be kidding...anything below 44kHz is absolutely inacceptable... and 5kHz is worse than telephone quality!
I would rather go for 128 or 160kbps ABR MP3s, that should be the best trade-off...

bLiNd's remix, Blue Vision, (http://www.ocremix.org/game/47/) runs at 160kbps and should be a heafty 5mb. Yet, this file (it contains the whole song) has a 500k filesize. I'll admit I could detect a slight quality loss in...
... interesting, I just tried exporting it "Raw" at 44kHz Stereo. The quality loss I detected is gone and the filesize is the same. *reuploads the file*

Slight loss? Are your ears working?
KWarp
07-12-2005, 10:45 AM
I'm inherently partially deaf, so yes, that's a possibility. :P Regardless, I literally can not get higher quality than that in a swf file. 16kbps, 44kHz... CD quality.
Let's put it this way: The song on your proof site *WAS* 5 MB and now is compressed with an audio codec flash used and it has a significant quality loss, even instantly recognizable on my notebook speakers :) I just think flash isn't supposed to have real high-quality audio, it automatically compresses it so the flash movies don't take forever to download...
KyleJCrb
07-12-2005, 12:37 PM
People can also encode their tracks at the higher quality bitrate for distribution (or just provide .wav files), and then encode a seperate, lower quality file for the storybook Flash project.

Does that really make a difference? I think Flash encodes WAV, RAW and MP3 the same, the destination file size is always the same (according to KWarp) - but with prior low bitrate MP3 conversion (ie below 192kbps) you get extra low quality because it is encoded twice with low bitrates, so importing the WAVs to flash should be far better because they are only encoded once.

Is there any way to make the audio stream not directly associated with the Flash video, so that the sound quality isn't reduced? Perhaps, for instance, having two streams, one audio and one video, and then having the viewer cue them up at the beginning? Each page could have its own chapter/song, and you could have a little note that says when to begin the audio, so they work together. That way (and I know this happened to me a lot) if you have a slower download connection and BitTorrent isn't your friend when it comes to albums, you can still listen to the music online without having to DL the songs, and without the video attached.
Just a suggestion.

I like that suggestion. It would be a lot easier on the programming of the flash as well, I think. It would give people the quality of both the music and the book without any loss in the quality.

Could you program the flash movie to play a song from a directory? Like "c:\...KSS BGM\Song1.mp3"?
I looked around on the 'net, and I found this: http://musicplayer.sourceforge.net/
It's a flash mp3 player. I don't really understand what the documentation says, but from what I get you tell the flash player to play music from a directory on your website. It might be able to play music from a computer.

It seems that the event sound type displays better quality than the stream sound type. Link (http://www.macromedia.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=tn_16063)
There's now no quality loss at all. I'm certain because the mp3 filesize is almost the same as the swf file (it cuts of 5% of the mp3 or so).
http://www.kwarp.com/storage/proof.html (I didn't edit the text. The file is 5 mb)
Yeah, only use stream if you're going to be stopping and starting in the middle of the music.

Funny thing about that track...
I already did it once. (http://www.vgmix.com/song_view.php?song_id=355) :)
That's why I was so psyched about Arek including it in the project; I've wanted to do a good version of that song for years now. It was easily the most meaningful song from my childhood... I used to spend hours listening to it on the Kirby's Dreamland sound test, big fat grey gameboy next to my ear. Good times.

SO far it seeems as though this project has been making a lot of progress. I am really proud to say that I have made this idea. But that is just it, it was just an idea. I really shouldn't be taking so much credit for this. You guys are the backbone of this project. YOU! If it wasn't for you guys, I wouldn't even be able to get this far. I've finished experimenting with all the sound compression settings. I'll be able to put any mp3/wav file through Flash and pump it out with no quality loss regardless of bitrate, VBR or otherwise. Filesize of the compressed mp3s will be about 95% of the originals. Estimated final project size (including art etc.): 75 Megabytes

I've done some more late-night experimenting in my lair. This time I've covered how Flash compresses images. *evil laugh*
Two options:
1) Photo(JPEG): This is for complicated pictures of course. Quality settings are 1-100.
2) Lossless(PNG/GIF): This should be for simple pictures. No image data is lost.
Generally, higher-quality bitmaps will slow down your computer more. :P
I've decided image dimensions for the art will be 450x600. This is to fit the page dimensions in the book. Details below. (I'm almost finished determining how many pictures there will need to be in the project. Bear with me.)
--------------------------------
Onto the topic of compatability. Unlike Arek, who's fine if this project only gets out to the bulk of Windows users (bad, bad Arek), I want this book to be compatable with everything it can be. There will be at least 4 versions of this file.
800x600 resolution, Windows (.exe)
800x600 resolution, Mac (.hqx)
1024x768 resolution, Windows (.exe)
1024x768 resolution, Mac (.hqx)
There will also be a demo on the site containing the first chapter or so for viewers who haven't decided if they want to download the whole project yet.
Any objections/suggesions/death threats? If so now is the time to let your voice be heard!

Flash is a difficult program to learn, so I can only imagine how much of a pain it would be to teach. :P It's definitely not the most user-friendly piece of software out there. It's more like a computer development/programming tool, not a graphics tool.

CC and I have been talking, and we think that there should be a little "contest".
You know how I earlier said that the cover should be photoshopped? Scrap that. We agreed that assigning and artist to the cover would be sort of unfair to everyone because only that one person gets a shot at it and noone else....soooo....
We thought about having all of you artists design a version of what you think should be the cover and all the members of the project vote on the best one. How does that sound?
Oltri
07-13-2005, 05:57 PM
That sounds fair :D Maybe there can be an extra webpage of the "alternate covers" for people who wanna check them out, assuming there will be a site for this.
I'm guessing others will be asking this, so: What are the criteria for the cover? And what will the title of the "book" be?

Not really. Not everyone has the Flash player installed on their system, let alone the latest version. Also, of the computers I've used in the past 3 years, roughly half of them can't play swf files not embedded in a web page. Leaving them in projector files simplifies a lot of things.
Also Arek, the time it takes to adjust the stuff isn't anything to worry about. I can make .exe and .hqx files in seconds, and resizing everything only takes about 30 seconds per page. That's 50 minutes if the project spans 100 pages.

Yeah, with Photoshop you can customize your brushes to make it look like you painted it with any medium imaginable. Actually, Corel Painter (IX) is even better for that, since there are a billion brushes and things already built in. I have Photoshop since my hobby is drawing and CG coloring, but my friend is a real artist and uses all those programs, so I can definitely vouch for Painter even without much personal experience.
Arek, you've done a horrible thing by choosing a game featuring a character whose design is just so *complicated and difficult* to reproduce. Ease up on the artists, okay?

Writing isn't any easier. :? 4 writers is already more than what seems managable.
This has brought something up, however. I've outlined how much art needs to be done (totally non-final) and it's amounted to quite a bit of work.
1 Cover page
5 Intro pics (this part describes that the sun and moon are fighting, Marx tells Kirby how to stop them, etc)
1 2-page-spanning overworld (aka the the area Kirby could land on any of the planets)
19 Kirby powers
7 planets (an illustration of what each planet looks like)
1 "?" star (secret planet I guess)
7 bosses (a picture of each boss)
7 When Nova Appears and Marx makes his wish
5 Nova (where Kirby flies to Nova and destroys it)
2 Marx (battle begins and ends)
2 Ending (Nova blows up, Scene of Sun and Moon around Popstar)
? End credits (this case is special, I don't know how many pics there will be)
That adds up to almost 60 pictures, and we haven't even included the scenarios for the Metaknight and Dedede music yet. We're going to need more artists. 10 total at the very least. 8O

*sigh* well, helpful comments appreciated. I don't know how to use fruity loops well, ...
Okay...I just listened to this for a few minutes, and my first comment is that your samples are pretty bad. Most of them sound like high quality midi to me. This makes your song lack a lot of depth, and I really couldn't get into it. I can feel your "style", but as for the sample quality, it really isn't good, and that takes away from your song. I also remember the original version of this song to be very exciting and adventurous, and so far, yours has a very flat and shallow feel to it. (especially your percussion and bass) I'm not trying to be mean or anything, but I think that if someone says something now, and heads this off from the beginning, it would save you a lot of wasted time and energy. I know my WIP needs a lot of work as well, so I don't think I'm perfect or anything, but the sample quality was really irking me.
So I suggest you look on the net for some nice high quality samples, try hammersound, or sf2midi.com, or darkesword's site, etc. You can also try searching google for .sf2, etc. Get some decent soundfonts.
For now, that's the best tip I can give you. You just need to make your WIP feel more dynamic, and better samples (or at least trying to make the ones you have have more range) would be a good way to begin. It has potential, which is why I felt the need to comment :d

I hope LAOS doesn't mind, but I quickly put together some sheet music of the Time to Learn/Training song and performed it.
Clicky (http://www.kwarp.com/mp3s/TrainingCello.mp3)
The melody itself is really quite easy. I didn't even need to put 5 minutes of practice to achieve the result above (that should be very evident :P). If LAOS (or any of the other remixers) are interested in having a live Cello performance in their remix, I'm more than up for it. The easier the part, the better I'll play it. :)

I love that Ninja Kirby stance! Thats wicked sweet!
You should have added Biospark though (the Ninja sidekick... thats my favorite). I also like how you did the RPG bosses, it would be fun to fight them all at once like that!
That also reminds me how hard it is going to be when we have to write that battle with the RPG boss...
"Kirby uses Knife Attack. Dragon takes 30 points of damage. Kirby uses pokeball.... Dragon caught! A new pokedex page has been added!"
KWarp
07-15-2005, 09:36 AM
I have a solution to that actually. We could randomly generate set phrases for that part of the story. It's as simple as assigning the phrases to variables and randomly printing them out on screen.
And yes, that is wicked art. :D In fact I think I'll make that the approximate standard of the page art. 450x600 and a filesize of less than 110k, give or take.
Also, I've picked up the official names of some of the "nameless" bosses.
Computer Virus: As seen above.
Wham Bam Rock: The temple boss with the stone hands
Ghameleo Arm: The Chameleon boss
RedleMas
07-15-2005, 09:48 AM
That would be easy, but then again we wouldnt have to write it that way. Like...
"Kirby looked at the Dragon virus and said to himself "Hey, I can handle this!". Suddenly, two more windows popped up! Kirby forgot to update his virus scan! Alt+Ctr+Delete isn't working either! Kirby changed to Ninja form and prepaired for a tough fight..."
I know we cant have the virus scan part (I thought it was funny), but write it in that sort of format instead of RPG format.

This is a crazy and almost stupid idea, but why not simply SCAN a white piece of paper? Im not sure how it will turn out but its worth a shot or if it will make a difference, unless you want something fancy in the background.
Now that i think about it, I have a replica of the Declaration of Independence laying around somewhere and it has that "old parchment" look on the back side I think. Ill see if I can salvage a background from it by scaning it.
EDIT: I got something from it but the lettering kinda showed up. Not sure if you can use it though, I'll send it to you if you want.

For those that care, I have started a rather interesting remix WIP of "Flying into Nova."

No offense taken! As I've said, I'm no master of production. if I had MY way I'd just work in the midi and sheetmusic...
Funny though, these samples are from those sites mostly. Can you recommend me any specific samples:
Piccolo (or a desert flute)
Guitar
Bells (glock)
Percussion (desert-y)
Marimba
Pizz strings
Bass
Just a thought. Hmm... I'm also not very good at eq'ing / filling things up. If someone could help me out that'd be sweet... just tips and stuff.
Thanks dude... the help is really appreciated.

Okay, I am in need of ideas..or any suggestions so far. I understand "Inside Nova" is kind of a more, tensive, dangerous type of tune, but I'm wondering if this took it a little too far on the introduction implemented.. (Picture it this way, By the time Marx finishes his wish, Nova makes his trek towards Pop Star. Progressively, by the time it is very close, Kirby comes in, right inside Nova, and takes it from there.)
Note: Melodic part (Barely started) will change later.. Channel and EQ mastering will be applied in the final product.

(EDIT: Should work now.)
EDIT2: Hmm...samples eh.. DO you have any VSTi's or extra synths to use in FruityLoops?
