Legend of Zelda: Hylian Melodies (ReMix project recruiting)

Hello everyone!

Hylian Melodies is a ReMix project aimed not at a single game in the series, but at the entire franchise. It does have a basis though, and that is in the different ocarina songs from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask.

The idea is that when a remixer has chosen a song they wish to use, they also have to pick a second or more songs (there is no limit, as long as you make the ocarina song apparent) of their own choosing, from the entire franchise, and then mix these together. They can use as much or as little of either the ocarina-song or the second song as they wish, as long as you can identify the ocarina-song in the track somehow. They can of course use more than one song to mix with the ocarina song. Also, if they can direct the mood of the song towards how the ocarina-song is, that would be great, but it's not a requirement.

Rules:

* If you want to sign up, then either write in this thread, or (preferably) send me a PM, with your idea
* Choose carefully when you choose your source material. You can only pick ONE Ocarina song, but as many other Zelda songs as you want, with a few exceptions of overly remixed tracks (such as Gerudo valley for example).
* In order to qualify for the project, there are some rules to the arrangement itself: When arranging them, it must be a proper arrangement. Placing the source materials next to each other in a medley with different instruments does NOT qualify as an arrangement.
* Your chosen tracks need to be apparent in the final product. The Ocarina song always needs to be recognizable, but it does not have to take the lead in the entire song if you don't want it to. The other tracks can be as much up front or in the background as you want.
* In order for me to know that you can stick to the rules, I need to hear something of your previous work. If possible, if you have anything where two or more tracks are being mixed together, I'd like to hear it. If you have been posted on OCReMix then I see that as a sign of quality, but I still need to hear your ideas for this project.

Yes, this is to everyone interested in the project really (and I'll put it in the main post), for your participation to be accepted I either need to hear something you've done in the past (both WIPs and completed tracks are fine), and I'd like to hear your ideas on what you want to do with the source material. A short wip of the song for this project i also good, as that covers both those things. If there is enough potential, I'll sign you up.

I don't like saying no to people, but the project needs to hold a certain degree of quality, so that we can become an official album on OCR. But if you're new to the scene, don't fret, I don't need to hear anything amazing at first, just something with good potential. A good idea can take you far!

EDIT: I will sign you up primarily for a track, and you can be there for a maximum of two weeks, and in this time I need to hear something of your so that you can secure the place. Otherwise it will be up for grabs again.

Then there's ThaSauce, has a forum, has remixers, and they've hosted project forums before, like sd3 back in the day.

On a related note, Darke, if it's not there already, stuff like where to get forums and other project-related stuff, shouldn't that be in the project guidelines or a linked project resource post or something? (weird sentence, I know)

Okay, here's a small rule update that's been requested by a few of you:

You can mix as many songs as you like with the ocarina song of your choice, as long as the ocarina song is still apparent in the remix.

So, if you've felt that the theme you chose to mix with just isn't enough, feel free to add another!

Sure, send me a PM with the name of the song or songs you want to mix it with, and also one of the following:
- A sample of any previous work, and an explanation of your idea with the mix
OR
- A smaller WIP of your remix, so that I can get a rough idea of that you're going to do, along with a more detailed explanation of the mix

According to the rules, you have two weeks to deliver something that will qualify you to the project. :)

As for the scarecrow idea, it could be interesting, but it would have to mean that everyone has time (and interest) for an extra mix. We'll have to wait and see what people think.

Sorry for the hiatus, everyone! I've been swamped with work and whatnot, but now I'm ready to put in a lot more work into this project! I will be checking in with all the people signed up to see what the status is shortly.

I also updated the list remixes and removed the ones that haven't been able to produce a good enough sample/WiP.

Hey, after listening over my WIP several times I've begun the recording of a second WIP to improve on the first thousandfold. I'm hoping to get it to you at some point in the next few weeks, best I can do with my busy schedule.

I've since then acquired a new guitar, this will certainly deliver results.

It sounds pretty nice Tuberz. I agree that the vocals could use some work but that's ok. I would also suggest slowing down the tempo in the begining just a bit for effect and the transition at 1:03 will have a more noticeable change i think. My main problems are: (Don't think I'm being a terrible person)

1) The Production Values (Usually covered in the final)

2) The drums seem a little random in places.
I feel as if Timpani may get a better feel on top of the ethnic drums you seem to be using.

3) Arrangement wise, the first minute is great ('Cept for the drums no offence)...
at about 1:35 things get a bit awkward.
That may be a spot needing of some tidying up. Then again at 2:00 it transitions a bit awkward... but after that until 3:10 it's really shining like a star.
At 3:10 it sorta trails off... the keys mustn't fit well. At 3:30 it picks back up.
At 4:00 I really think the piano's sharp tone fit well... with the sound of birds and all.
Everything from 4:00 is perfect... the ending however was a bit abrupt, which is fine... but I don't feel it fit. Who knows, maybe with some heavy delay it'll sound like a masterpiece.

The main things that comes to mind to tidy this up are: Better/Less violent drums. The snare kills the feel. The 3:00 mark to 3:30-ish is a little bit bad in the pitch environment.
It needs to be fixed up... perhaps you could change up the source a bit.

In the end, remember It's just my opinion. Don't kill me. Haha

Glad you enjoy mine. I'll get something better done later on. The vocals would be the only problem to sort out... also... slowing it down is probably a bad idea considering it's already pushing 7 minutes. Haha

Ok here's the latest version of my remix again. I dropped the Sonata completely and replaced it with Saria's Song/Lost Woods. It sounds alot better in my opinion. The only major issues are the transitions which I'm working on now along with a few extra side melodies and harmonies. Hope you guys like it so far and feel free to give me some feedback :-D

HUGE IMPROVEMENT!
Sounds great. The snare drum was perfect and then the mix just stayed that way.
The transition was perfect also! Only thing I can say is that you should probably work on divvying up the source a bit.
Otherwise the panel will think it's a straight cover of something. Stupid I know but I slide away from that with vocals. Haha

Also, I've signed up for a few more projects as well so my WIPS/mixes will be a little bit more delayed.
But they'll probably be more clean and organised.

Hey it's been awhile and sorry I've been out of touch with the project. Things have just been really busy and I haven't gotten a chance to catch up on a lot of stuff but I'd like to sign up for my old track - Saria's Song mixed the Fishing Hole from Twilight Princess.
