THE DARK SIDE OF PHOBOS
A DOOM REMIX PROJECT
http://doom.ocremix.org
08.08.05
Here it is, folks. Almost a year of hard work, dedication, sweat and blood, sleepless nights (especially for me in the past week or so) and hair-pulling, The Dark Side of Phobos is released and ready to rock. 23 tracks of remixed Doom goodness, available for your downloading pleasure.
If you are interested, check out the tumultuous times of the project here (http://www.ocremix.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=47072), in the project thread.
There are both Mp3 downloads and a (quite large) Bittorrent file with both Flac and Mp3 available on the site. I recommend that you use the Bittorrent, if just to ease the assault on the mirrors. If you can, please seed once you are done downloading!
Use this thread to post comments, complaints, compliments and feedback. Check the bottom of this post for news updates on the project as well! Thanks for supporting the project and I hope you enjoy The Dark Side of Phobos!

Finally, it's out. After this long, I was beginning to doubt...
Really, though. I have high expectations for this project, and I'm sure it'll meet them and then some.
To anyone seeing the mirror page all fuxxored, it's being fixed as we speak.
Also
Guys, feel free to release your tracks to VGMix, if you are so inclined. Also, in the info for your song, please advertise the project and encourage people to go to the site and grab the whole thing as well. (ps: the site's url will be given soon)
Furthermore, don't everyone release your tracks at once. If you see like three DSoP tracks on the recent songs list, don't submit yours. Wait a day or two.
Thanks. :)

Stellar stuff guys. Congrats all around.
May I suggest advertising on gamefaqs (http://www.gamefaqs.com)? They're Nazis about direct linking, but there's both a forum for each game in the DB and a game music board.

The size comes from the lossless flac files. If you're not fussy about having absolutely top-notch music, then deselect the flac files and just download the mp3's. It'll be much quicker and free up some bandwidth for other torrent users.
Just to point out, guys. If you have time, a quick free registration is all thats needed to vote for the project here:

Just finished listening to it all. Still unsure what to really think of it. Many of my opinions will sound like nit-picking, but I still feel I should voice them.
First off, I acknowledge that this may be the boldest and riskiest arrangment project possible. The Doom soundtrack forced you guys to stick to basically the same tone throughout every song, which in my opinion bogged down the lengthy 1.5 hours of listening. I'm thinking "Damn, this is awesome" after the first 5 tracks, but then it starts to get tiresome after 10 more tracks that are all built around the same ideas: distortion, a feeling of chaos, and synths going off in every direction.
Tracks 1-2 really, really kicked my ass. The transition between the two is by FAR the greatest moment of the whole project, and it's little things like this that should have been evident throughout the whole album. Voices on track 1 are well executed, and some suprisingly impressive guitar work on track 2 and also track 5 from some guys whose work I'm not too familiar with.
From there on however, it's really a mixed bag. Very few memorable moments, at times it seems there's an alarming lack of musical creativity and experimentation. Not too many things that stood out, except for perhaps the ending on Dan B's title track.
The idea for an Intermission gave me the sense that you guys understood the use of a filler track, but the execution of it here makes me doubt that. Yes, you had good intentions of dividing up this lengthy 23 track listen with the Intermission, but it's how it sets up the following track that's important. Tracks following filler tracks generally don't need intros, so as good as the drums are at the beginning of Infiltrator, it sort of destroys the purpose of the track before it. Fillers are generally intended serve AS the intro for the next track, which brings up my next point...
As offensive as this may seem, Ghosts of Mars and Secrets and Lies should have been made into filler tracks themselves. Eliminate the beat on Ghosts of Mars, make it about a minute long, and it sounds a whole lot more ethereal and makes it a better change of pace with a tone of mystery rather than the tone of danger that exists everywhere else on the CD. Secrets and Lies is pretty much already perfect as a filler track...except that its about 3 minutes too long to be one. You're probably thinking "Why won't this guy shut up with this filler talk? Filler filler filler blah blah blah." Really, I think fillers are the only way to save something like this when you've got the same tone throughout a double disc set. You had the right idea with Intermission, but it's still damn tiresome consecutively listening to 11 songs over 4 minutes long each.
Then there's that vocal track at 22. I like vocal tracks, and I think this one's pretty good, but it's awkward as hell. For 21 tracks you try to pull me into this feeling that I'm on an alien planet, desparately fighting for my life to survive against these gruesome monsters around me, and suddenly this female voice is clearly singing out to me "Trust in me, that's all you can do." Eh? Instead of having one full blown vocal track with lyrics, having silently spoken lyrics littered throughout the tracks would have worked, sort of building the sense that the main character is hearing voices in his head or something.
Overall, some moments of brilliance, holds up well compared to previous arrangement project efforts, but contains some ideas that could be executed a little better.

First off, thank you for giving your opinion on the project in a polite fashion. That means a lot.
I'm just going to address this issue above. Some of you may realise by now that the final sections of the project (the last 3-4 songs) were meant to sound like the culimination of a movie soundtrack. Dan B's is the biggest example of this, the climactic final battle and its resolution. My decision to place larsec's track right afterwards was based on the general idea that, in many cases, after a movie is over, there is a vocal track over the credits - maybe the main theme song or something like that. I felt like Larsec's track, with the dark yet hopeful lyrics, fit well as a "Credit Roll" sort of deal. If you disagree, that's perfectly fine. I know that this project won't please EVERYONE who listens to it and I understand that.
Again, thanks for your comments. I hope you get what I was trying to achieve.

We should put a disclaimer on the Website front page:
Warning: This Remix Project is a cohesive album, not a compilation of remixes in the vein of Kong In Concert. It is dark & industrial. Do not listen if you are currently taking medication for balding, diarrhea, anti-depressents, male IMPotence & are pregnant or breast feeding.
But yeah, I'm still d/ling (damned dial up) but what I've heard so far is awesome. I'm all for industrial dark stuff so this album is right up my alley. As opposed to my driveway, which I've parked my car in. Awesome work guys, I'll post again for the hell of it once I'm done d/ling.
EDIT: Fixed. I somehow typed RoTC instead of KiC. Thanks for pointing that out SOC.

The way I thought it out and planned the lyrics was to have someone tell a story, a very dark and disturbing story. Then at "Through the flames I see them coming" the listener becomes aware that the story teller is actually a part of the story. The story keeps darkening and prospects for the future look bleak. Then the story teller says she will save you, to come to her and be safe, to rest at ease... But it turns out to be a trick. She is actually part of the forces of Darkness and now, that she has lured the listener in, the listner will surely die...

My Favs....
'Aria of the Damned' is absolutely amazing vocal work by pixietricks! My fav track on the album :D
'Ghosts of Mars' Loved the violin, the vocal work and whole feel to this song.
'Leaning Tower of Babel' remained supremely recognisable, I dont like it when a track is altered to the point of it sounding completely different which is what happened a lot in Kong in Concert project. So I loved this track.
'Glass Moon' for the same reasons as Leaning Tower of Babel. Very recognisable yet still a refreshing new sound to it.
Things I Liked.....
The segueway between some tracks, some just flowed into the next perfectly
It still feels totally like doom! Hearing this made me want to install my copy of Ultimate Doom.
Things I Didnt Like....
Level Themes out of order. I think a more coherent feel would have been made if the level themes were done in correct order....... but thats just me.
Samey feel. While it does make the project feel unified and not just a random CD of remixes, it would have been nice to see more styles of remixing being used rather then every 2nd track being guitar metal.
Overall...
Great Stuff, a worthy project from the community. Definately worthy to grace my ipod and im sure the more I listen the more all the tracks will grow on me. Thanks guys great job.

Yep yep yep. Definitely worth it.
FAVORITES:
-The Dark Side of Phobos: Awesome. What can I say? Convincing, powerful, evocative orchestral. A great namesake piece.
-The Glass Moon: Very entrancing song, this one is. Just a lot of really good ideas, all combined to form an amazing work of musakz.
-Aria of the Damned: Oh, pixietricks, how you make me glad...that you were on my project first. But your talents are not wasted here, and they enhance an already Doom-esque piece into a truly, terrifyingly beautiful ensemble.
-The Leaning Tower of Babel: Incredible intro. Like capturing the thrum of the project itself and putting it into a single sonic form. By far the most danceable, lively piece herein.
Other honorable mentions for great pieces: Infiltrator, Jade Spawn, Mystery Meat, and ElectroCute Bunny. Excellent work, everybody...this is the best project yet.

Okay so here it is, i've been reading forums a lot and its time for me to finally post on one. I've seen some of the slandering that new guys get, but i've mentaly prepped for it, so do your worst. And yes i realize that my username has the absolute maximum level of nerdiness with it, but hey this is a website with a bunch of remixes of songs from videogames on it, so i can't be too out of place can I? :D
Anyhoo, this is a badass project! The entire thing seems very professional, with the well done songs and the fancy cover art and stuff. I like the fact that there is an intro and an interlude too, it really makes the cd feel ginuine. This project has the kind of quality that you would expect out of something being sold in a cd store ya know?
And do y'all remember (this was a loooong time ago) when that doom midi was floatin around on the internet, i mean i'm sure its still out there but i found this when i was still a kid and i thought it was the coolest thing ever. It was a midi of E1M1 that used an electric guitar synth sound, and ever since i heard it I always wanted to hear one with a real guitar in it, and my wish has been granted 8) (that is a real guitar in Hangermageddon right? well even if it isnt it still sounds damn good)
so that was it, my first post on my first forum ever. Those of y'all who are reading this should feel priviledged to be witnessing such an epic event (joke)

Thanks for the feedback, Red 5.
Hangarmageddon uses real guitar recorded by Evilhorde, yes.
And you most likely won't get flamed in here unless it's in jest. But I recommend heading to tech help & newbies where there's an intro thread you can post in to say hi to everyone.

Goddamnit people!
These are great songs, but this is like the second collaboration project in a row that I have to manually retag the FLAC files... Would be REALLY nice if the .flacs came pretagged. I don't want MP3s, and if the FLAC files were tagged... making vorbis files would be really easy.
I'm a real bittorrent n00b, but I'm thinking that having 127 seeders is damn impressive.
I've seen Naruto episodes with 500+ seeds.
Downloading this now, can't wait until it is done...
On the day of release, Naruto episodes usually have about 10,000 seeds. The most I've ever seen though was a copy of Star Wars Episode 3 (that turned out to be 2 hours of black screen... MPAA honeypot methinks). that torrent had 1.2 million seeds.
Now it's up to 336 seeders. I'm talking about impressive for a remix album. Not this Naruto whatever-the-hell-that-thing-is thingie.

I spent pretty much the entire day listening to this...
congrats guys! this is the best site project yet... it just sounds so damn cohesive and, i don't know, but it's floored me.
My fave tracks have to be Hemo and Pixietricks' "Aria of the Damned", Elsa Persson and Larsec's "Darkness Dawning" and both of DJ Carbunkles' tracks... and i LOVE the intermission. There are one or two weaker tracks, but that mostly comes down to personal preferences, rather than anything being inherentely wrong with them.
Congrats to Myth, and all the remixers involved...
my fave project yet, and extra kudos goes to the whole album being so damn cohesive... quite incredible.
i love it to bits.

You have to remember that most other online communities aren't really... as smart as this one. Beyond OCR/AR/ST/VGmix(and I know some of you like to argue that one, but stfu please), the intelligence level drops dramatically while the implied ignorance level rises. Have you ever seen a Counterstrike forum?
The people at Doomworld, their image of a perfect Doom arrangement album is basically a collection E1-E4 direct covers. In this community, the notion of direct covers is wholly unsophisticated, unoriginal, and something associated with newbies. This Doom community, however, having had very minimal knowledge of the idea of videogame arrangements, would rather listen to that "Let's play some tetris motherfucker boom boom boom boom" remix than a radically changed original song. Most of the Doomworld inhabitants don't see the point of changing something they liked so much [the original music] so dramatically.
Point of view +1 [ohgod XD]

Guys... I am seriously impressed. Congratulations to you all on a fine job.
I'm not all that familiar with the OST (I always hated the midis and stuck a CD in instead) so I can't judge how well the album works as a collection of remixes (or ReMixes). But that doesn't seem to be the point of the album: it's obviously designed to work as a cohesive whole, and in that respect the project is a resounding success.
I'm currently debating whether to stay up and listen to the whole album (it's 11.25 and I have to get up at 6  )... nah, I'll stop after the first disc, I need sleep. I'll be back at the weekend with more comments. For now, I'll just reiterate - this is awesome work. Well done.

I read all of that thread now on the doom forum, yep they really suck. Don't even bother replying there, they make a tiny percentage of who download this project and the other percentage probably mostly like the songs so that's a good thing. I'm not going to justify anything, but yknow when you find an angry horse it's probably not best to try and calm her down, just sit in the barn and wait for the little shit to die. Good hint? Yes.

(And I ask because I haven't seen anything said about it yet except from one of the guys on DoomWorld who said he pretty much hated everything except it... which is either an insult or a blessing. I'm not really sure.)

Ive never really gotten around to posting on here, as much as i enjoy all the music on this site.
But holy christ, last night i wandered over to see what new remixes were up, and noticed the doom link at the top. Well, ive been a huge fan of the music from doom, to the point that i would say the music from doom more than anything else sticks in my head from any game ive ever played. Not even as much actually LISTENING to it at first, but when i first got the game the music was perfect to the gameplay.
Hell, ive got a copy of Bobby Prince's CD "Doom Music" that i ordered about 4 years ago.
Anyway, im not at all a musician, so half the time i dont understand whats posted in reviews, or critques around here. But i know what does it for me, and for me its that transition in Darkness Dawning where the vocals end, and the whole thing just goes hardcore. I mean really, holy shit. The text music was always one of my favorites on the original soundtrack just for its sheer creepiness, but you guys took it up a notch.
Ive been spreading the link to the project around like the black death, its that great.
Awesome, enos! It's Doom fans like yourself that we made this Project for.

Well, I created this account just to let you guys know what I think about your project. I've been listening to songs for OCRemix for a while now, but never cared much about posting in the forums. This is definitely a good reason.
The Dark Side of Phobos overall is fantastic. I can't say I loved every track, but I'm certain that's a personal thing and not an issue of quality. All of TO's work was amazing as usual, but some other tracks that I really liked were Hangarmageddon, Industrial Strength, The Leaning Tower of Babel, and The Dark Side of Phobos. I think the only songs that didn't really work for me were Aria of the Damned and Darkness Dawning. I guess I just don't like vocals in Doom.
I'm sorry to hear all the fuss over at DoomWorld especially since that's were I'm from, but I was a bit disappointed that some of you felt the need to go over there and defend yourselves. If they don't like your music, to each his own. They were rather rude about it, but just leave it be.
In the end, I guess I want to let everyone involved know what this project means to me, having been a Doomer since '93. I've been following the project for months and I'm really happy the way it turned out.

I'll be writing up reviews for each track on the album barring my own when I get some time. But for now let me say the whole album is pretty darn good. There are some tracks that will receive less than kind reviews from me, mainly for straying so far from the original, but those are the breaks.
But I will say my favourite 5 tracks on this are (in a sort of order):
Infiltrator
Leaning Tower of Babel
Chemical Imps
Hangarmageddon
Darkness Dawning
Reviews for later though.

Nuts, everytime I hear your intro I keep thinking it'll say 'Welcome to the Cosmic Gate' cos it sounds exactly the same as the intro song to one of their albums. (The voice that is). I like the percussive work you did on this one, in comparison to your usual focus on the synth.

The whole thing is friggin' awesome. I played through the whole game (using, naturally, the Doomsday Engine (www.doomsdayhq.com)) using this album to replace the original soundtrack, and holy hell does it sound good. The whole thing really amps up the atmosphere during gameplay. (And to be honest, some of the tracks I really can't stand listening to outside of a gameplay session.. not to say that they're bad or anything, just not great for listening on their own).
Great job as a whole.

Personally, I found this album to be a bit mediocre, especially compared to other albums that have been released. I was actually expecting something a bit more rock, but I've found mostly forgettable music in this album. It could be that I haven't played Doom, so I might not be able to appreciate the music as those who have played it. Either way, still sub-par in my opinion. The ending of the album was especially disappointing. In the KiC album, the last tune simply doesn't hold back and makes an awesome kick-you-in-the-pants ending. Again, the ending for this album is forgettable.
To post my stuff in the right section:
I hated this :(. Most of these are basically goth metal remixes, which stinks because Doom (if you ask me) never was scary and never will. Doom is more action than horror, no matter what new versions that are completely different come out. The ones that aren't goth metal are frustrating electronica that sounds nothing like the original version. I understand that remixes are supposed to be different but really, when you can't even tell a song is from the game, you've failed. Heck, the E2M2 remix sounded more like a song from Metroid Prime. The only remixes I liked at all were the E3M3 one and the E2M8 one. The rest were either very mediocre or horribly confused as to what game this was.
You lose, authors of The Dark Side of Phobos.
And for some additional comments based on the 4 words I've seen skimming over this: I'm a fan of Doom, but I thought this remix did no justice whatsoever. Sorry if this sounds trollish but I just felt you needed to know that this wasn't a step in the right direction.

There are people out there, like me, who buy whole albums of Goth/Industrial/Electronic stuff. So saying it gets a bit monotonous.. Remember that the entire point of most of these projects (and of remixes in general) is to not necessarily capture the feeling of the original songs, but to reinterpret and recreate a brand new feeling for the music. Of course, songs that do capture the spirit of the original are great too, but not all remixes and remix projects are about that. I'm sorry you're not able to appreciate it, but hey; your loss. I'll keep listening to these awesome tunes. :P

Well its not like the doom games were fully of flowers and happy smiling zombies. Get in touch with your goth side.
Anyway, nice work on...well...all of it. I listened to it all the way through once and said "That wasn't nearly as exciting as I thought it would...". But now I've been going back and listening to more and more of the tracks, and its just growing on me, I can't get enough of it. And a special thanks to TO and Mythril Nazgul since from what I can see it was you that held the project together. But what do I know, I'm just a simple lurker :)
Oh, and about that Intermission track. WTF? I absolutley loved it, but I have no idea where it came from or what its based off of. Is it even out of the doom music? Its a great little evil circus piece, and it reminds me of the Fish Polka from Rise of the Triad, but I just don't know what it is.
And, does anyone have the lyrics for track 21, Darkness Dawning? I can hear most of it, I mostly just want to know what's being said when all the distortion kicks in at 2:47.
Uber nice work, I'll be playing this in the car for quite a while.

My opinion (for what it's worth)
Welcome to Hell- I like it, definately gets you in the mood
Hangarmageddon- Show-off!
The Red Moon- I like
Industrial Strength- DUDE!, I'm sorry if this is an insult to you, BUT I love this "80's" sounding song. The good 80's sound not the "culture club" or "madonna" sound. Sounds a little like "Tears for Fears", which I'm a fan of. And fuck whomever says otherwise, I don't care if you post that you hate that band, fuck you anyway!
Mystery Meat- Damn, what a loser! Who does this guy think he is? It's no Hangarmageddon I'll tell you that much!
Leaning Tower of Babel- Man, I wanna party with you! I DON'T dance but I almost busted a groove in my seat.
Reprocessed- Hmm, not sure, I don't hate it, . . . it has to grow on me.
Ghosts of Mars- You got the im, you know what I think, awsome, different, kewl.
Chemical Imps- Inspiration from Chemical Bros.? Sounds like thier work.
Demon Con Gusto- Analog, when I first heard this I kept looking for RUN DMC to walk in the room and bust a "MC pose".
This Can't Be Good- IF the song was bad I would so make fun of your choice of title right now!
Jade Spawn- I like but I felt like I was waiting for it to build up somewhere.
Intermission- Funny Shit! Does anybody else feel like wacthing "Monty Python's Quest for the Holy Grail" after listening to this? (okay only the true fans will get the joke)
Infiltrator- "Al Di Meola" anyone?
Infected Lab- "Confusion-Pump panel remix" by "New Order" anyone?
Secrets & Lies- sounds like "Poe"
The Glass Moon- I like but you still should have used you neck pickup on the guitar work my friend.
Ocean Pollen- I wanna get high
Area of the Damned- Pixietricks, at first you were cute, but after hearing your voice, . . . I'm in love with you! Marry me tonight! I'll see you in Vegas!
Iron Cathedral- Lovin' that goth 80's sound!
Dark Side of the Phobos- Deserving of the title of the album
Darkness Dawning- Elsa, you're cute as well, but you scare me @ 2:50 into the song. Don't take this the wrong way, but I think on a date you would probably rape me, and afterwards, . . . I would be crying in the corner.
ElectroCute Bunny- I thought this was going to be a funny song because of the title, I was wrong, . . . not funny, . . . groovin'.
Don't worry, I'm not being kind for the hell of it. If you sucked at making your song, I would absolutely tell you.
Awsome album guys, and thanks for letting me be apart of the album. This may have been my first remix but I'm so glad it is a rememberable one! Please invite me to the next Doom remix anytime, I'm there!
Take Care Guys!

Edit: Larsec posted the real ones below. :)

And, does anyone have the lyrics for track 21, Darkness Dawning?
Darkness Dawning
Night is near, beginning ending
Dawning dark the skies are sending
Cry of black and cry of sorrow
End og light and end of morrow
From without the night is calling
From within the night is mauling
Single sign of darkness dawning
Wretched light of darkness morning
Evil hears and evil watches
Evil know and evil judges
Brings to bloom the darkest flower
This will be the darkest hour
From the dust and soil awaken
spirits lost and souls forsaken
They will rise from over yonder
They will fly and they will wander
Through the flames I see them coming
Through the flames I see them longing
They have come to end the living
Unforetold and unforgiving
They are here, they crave, they hunger
With the damned the nights grow longer
Twisted limbs and twisted faces
Demons from the darkest places
But have no fear, I've come to save you
Trust in me that's all you can do
I lay to rest your fear and worry
Come to me! Come on, let's hurry!
This is where you find your ending
Welcome to a death so mending
You try to scream, your life is dimming
cause I'm from Hell and DOOM I'm bringing!

Just got the Doomworld boards working, seems some people don't like the DSoP project, well I've never played Doom, so I'm not biased to the game, but I've played Quake 2, and apparently Doom and Quake are very similar. In this regard, I think the DSoP remixes would suit a Quake game very well, and therefore not that far off from a Doom game. The people complaining are mostly just long-set Doom fanboys. As a piece of music, it's definitely above average, I'd say about a third of the tracks definitely outstanding. It's got all the industrialism, techno, metal where it matters, everything else is obviously elaborative. I'm gonna get Doom just to see how well this soundtrack fits in.

From the depths of heck, one person stands alone, with a BFG taking down anything that moves..
I remember playing the first Doom, the controls, beasts, and the gunfire. Just exploring the labyrinth was a ticket, to (A) getting lost, (B) winding up dead
But most of all, I remember the ambience, sometimes you could hear atmospheric bgm tracks, or the sounds of monsters growling, and rushing towards your lone warrior. It was that intense from start to finish, every nerve wrecking move could be your very last.
<-end note to doom->
About this Doom tribute-
Completely sweet tracks, some memorable, and some new.. all the tracks intertwine so very well, it could very well be the next Doom soundtrack.
Plus the collaboration of different artists added even more creativity within the unique sounds.
Overall, excellent project. And very glad that things worked out in the end. Again, great job to the group of artists that worked on this project together.

I gotta say: Verah Nass!
Whether industrial, metal, or orchestral (and one opera o_O) it's all very commendably awesome. EvilHorde: AWESOME job on Hangarmageddon! I *love* the samples tossed in so VERY nicely. I mean revving chainsaw when you finally hit the big riffs and then the reload/shot part midway. Very thumbs up!
Though.. no offense, Myth, but out of the very aggressive stuff, yours seemed to stick out the most. Good arrangement, but right after Beatdrop's bit of crunchy industrial it's jarring... But I suppose it's my personal choice.
I gotta agree on Darkness Dawning. Nice vocal transformation there.
I think that The ending song (Bunny :D) turned out nicely too, though it feels like you were taking your sweet time to hit the actual melody. But nice improved piano work, TO. Both in the Intermission (which was quite awesome, btw) and the ending.
All in all, everyone wrapped up the doom feel incredibly well. If Doom 2 wasn't wrapped up so thoroughly by OCR's existing mixes, I'd like to see that one done up like this. Doom 2 certainly had more tracks that I find as 'favorites' of the series, but still. Good job!

TheGlassMoon[e1m8] is probably my favorite track, due in part because of the vivid memory of my first time playing that level. I remember tearing through the two hordes of pink demons, only to rise up an elevator and find myself before two ominous-looking pillars, thinking "What the fuck is..."
And then the two Barons of Hell stroll out, and I bugged the fuck OUT. Scary moment for a 12-year-old.

Damn! What an awesome project. My special thanks to all for their great work. I listened to it all at 3 am, and I enjoyed it greatly. I can tell an incredible amount of work was put into this project, both in managing, production and composition. My personal favorite is "The Chemical Imps", partially for the equalization and overall sound and of course the composition, but also because that was one of my favorite themes in Doom(M?). And that was just one of them, they all seemed to blend together in my mind to make one of the better compilations I've heard. This just made my whole month. Fantastic.

Well I used to be a pretty good writer, but mainly since the loss of my fantasy novel almost four years ago; mix of anime/videogames/movies and such; which I'd been working on all through year 8, I haven't been able to write much since. I'm still saving up to see if I can have it recovered from the hard drive, it occured to me about a year or so ago that I could try and have it recovered seeing as my writing was getting worse and this could boost my confidence a lot.

There was debate on the Doomworld boards though about the quality of the remixing and how some people thought it was sloppy or amateurish, but I think while obviously not at professional recording studio level, it was a very good tribute by Doom fans.

The only track I liked, ultimately, was "Ghost of Mars". Granted, I only played through most of them once, didn't pay close attention on a lot, but... yea. That was the only one which struck me, I suppose.
I should also note that I wasn't fond of the Kirby project or Sonic 2 one either. In fact, I think the last one I liked was the... Duck Hunt one. Heh. It's probably due to the fact that now that compilations have caught on, the remixers involved with them tend to be lesser-known (and not as good).. yea.

Yeah! All this praise from people is jawesome! I've even gottn some fan mail on my piece... which is super hardcore good! Yay! Now time for some thoughts!
Welcome to Hell: Good moody intro.. nuff said.
Hangarmageddon: Great rock cover.
The Red Moon: Yay! I love this type music. Great stuff.
Industrial Strength: Sounds terrible. This guy totally missed the point of this song.
Mystery Meat: This song really imporved from the demo that I heard last. Sounds really, really good. Especially that intro.
The Leaning Tower of Babel: Whoa, I was toatally surprised by this one. Horde really made a great sound mix.
Reprocessed: Beatdrops style totally took this song to the next level. Great Industrial type sounds.
Ghosts of Mars: Great ambience. Though for some reason I prefer the older versions. Still a great listen!
The Chemical Imps: Good song. I likedededed it.
Demon Con Gusto: Nice chilled back groove to give the album a nice contrast.
This Can't Be Good: Nice trance feeling this song has.
Jade Spawn: I really liked this song. Fitting end of the albums first disc. One of my favorites.
Intermission: I like monkeys... *throws poo*
Infiltrator: Good song. Nice tribal feel. Guitar & synth usage really made this a unique song.
Infected Lab: More break beatish action! Excellent.
Secrets and Lies: A bit slow, but it has it's moments. Especially those ominous twinks towards the end.
The Glass Moon: Again, I'm biased with this type of songs. Lovd it!
Ocean Pollen: Another nice chill groove interlude. I really enjoyed this song. Especially 2:40-3:25. Greatbgreat great.
Aria of the Damned: Although this song wasn't my speed, I liked it. The live vocals really made this shine.
Iron Cathedral: Bias yet again! Great great great. The only complaint I have is that it's too short.
The Dark Side of Phobos: My favorite song from the album. Dang good orchestration. And that piano towards the end... woooh. Beautiful.
Darkness Dawning: Great minimal instumentation combined with superb opera-like singing... good stuff!
ElectroCute Bunny: I really loved the intro. The rest was great too, but that intro.. man. Pretty good maing.
All in all... I think it's great. Whether it bias because I'm on the album or not... I like it. And about sounding like good 80's synth stuff... I take it as a compliment seeing as I got the feeling that DooM's original score was structured like a good John Carpenter movie score. At least that was my impression.

You obviously haven't heard much classical singing, then. Elsa uses hardly any vibrato, among other stylistic choices, and that's a fundamental part of opera and classical singing in general. It's used to project the sound in large halls (yeah, no mics, hehe), and also to warm, define, and strengthen tone. She has good control, which shows she has training, but I think her voice is in a league of its own. Very interesting style!

I only heard parts of Kong in Concert, and haven't heard Relics of the Chozo, but every other finished site project I d/led in full and I'd be surprised to find that this isn't the best one. The album flows well, the production quality is high, and the length in general is quite satisfying. Very very very very very cool. I REALLY wish I grew up on doom, that would just make this all so much cooler.
Tracks in particular I find worth metnioning:
06 - Evil Horde's Leaning Tower of Babel: sick breaks w/ glitches = win. Very tasty little piece, I don't know about the rest of you but this is the kind of song that gets stuck in my head forever and taps my toe.
07 - Beatdrop's Reprocessed: the piercing tones are a delight, very industrial. Like sex.
09 - Roetaka's Chemical Imps: Dang I miss you around the PRC's bro. Dirty synths with phat beats. Iffy about the piano but it's the kind of piece you have to appreciate.
22 - Elsa & Larsec's Darkness Dawning: By 2:49 (the screaming rockout part) it becomes clear that this is the climax of the album, not necessarily for quality but for emotion/story. It's incredible you guys put this much thought into it, I'm proud of you all.
Again, you guys should all be really proud, it's a solid piece of work and I hope it brings in a steady stream of Doom fans. :D

Sooo, the piercing tones are like sex, or are you equating sex to being very industrial? Quite the interesting philisophical notion there buddy, I think you can write a term paper and become a doctor with that.

The whole notion of sex is very industrial - not only through the conventional "sex creates babies, therefore sex is an industry with a product" outlook, but through the imagery and the motions as well. A repeated thrusting, like pistons or machinery.

Someone over at doomworld actually gave a proper review for the album. A general liking of the album with a few dislikes to top it off. What surprised me was this individual is probably the first one that seemed to have an agenda against Evilhorde.

Well... it's quite simple actually. This is OCR. Well that, & for some reason peoples minds seem to be in the gutters... &... um... I blame Mythril for the decline in young(ish) peoples moral core. Shame on you Myth... releasing something you know was gonna start a discussion on global warming... I mean sex.

I'm here to tell you that there are few things in the world more frightening then being glomped by a 6'6" goth dude.
I know jackall about musical terminology or anything else, but I do know that Hangarmageddon and Darkness Dawning have gotten more playtime then any other song on my playlist since I downloaded DSoP. This is an incredible effort that introduced me to a multitude of fantastic remixers. and I'll be watching eagerly for more by you.

So, I'm listening to...
"analoq - Demon Con Gusto" (e3l3)
...and enjoyed it enough that I decided to keep it on repeat for the length of the soundtrack instead of listening to the rest! ;)
(catchy synths, pads and drums. I loved especially the buildup at 1:36 and the 2nd octave change at 2:52. The NIN/Closer similarities at 1:36-2:24 and 3:12+ kicked ass)

Do yourself a favour.
Download Bitcomet
Download the torrent
Open Bitcomet
Click File -> Open Torrent
Select the DSoP torrent
Tick the boxes next to the files you want (which would be the MP3's, not the flac's)
Then click ok, the torrent program will do the rest for you. It'll tell you when it's done downloading in a little bubble on the taskbar, and then you just go in and listen.

I just BARELY finished this album for the first time and am on my second round. Solid! Props to everyone involved.
I haven't listened to the music enough to determine favorites or, forbid, write up any kind of review or criticism. However The Chemical Imps and Jade Spawn really stick out in my mind at this point (the names not so much the music). I don't know, its all sort of a blur at this moment because I have such a bad memory.
There did seem a couple points that seemed a tad weak but I for the life can't remember where. I just remember thinking it. Pathetic, I know, but what can you do?
I wish I would have known about this project early! I would have BEGGED to do a remix. :D
Anyway the general flow of the album is great. I want to go on a road trip now! Flowing albums are always great for road trips. :)
I'm rambling. :o[/i]
Awesome. :)
In other news, the torrent speed spiked back up to 2 or so Mb again - which is cool. Sometime this morning, we'll have hit 5,000 completed downloads from the torrent alone - which is even cooler.
For comparison, it took KiC almost two months to hit 5,000 completed downloads on the torrent. :D

I can tell you right now that most of the mixes in this won't make it to the site. While they work well as an album project mix, some of them don't quite fit under the site guidelines (ie: straying from the original too far, staying too close to the original.) The quality of the some of the entries might need some work before they can make it past the panel as well.

Did a Wikipedia page for the project based on a template from Rmrfstar's Kong in Concert Wiki entry (which I also updated). Check it out at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Dark_Side_of_Phobos, and of course Navid, Lee, or anyone else that can genuinely contribute to the page is encouraged to fix any potential inaccuracies and provide additional details for the project. This entry in particular could use some expansion for the entry, for example a sentence or two regarding the style of the original soundtrack. demonik! electronik! It's a great remix from ma buddy EvilHorde. Haven't really said anything about his stuff, but I liked it alot and want to work with him again! Basically I was over the moon when I found out he made Master of Flame from MegaMan6, that was a remix I loved before I even started mixing (shows a good gap ay).
I'm a bit disapointed Dj Carbunk1e hasn't had quite a share of the complimentive feedback. InfectedLab was a damn brilliant dance mix, something you'd expect in the matrix, or if the imps know karate in the new doom movie (they might, who knows) but yeah that was one of my favourite songs that stood at out most in the album.

EvilHorde's was so good. First heard a clip of it on VGDJ and knew it was gold.
Most of this project is better then half of the new OCR's that have been posted. It's just hate on the Judges panel. Plain and simple.
Don't forget groove bias and tekno bias to complete the conspiracy theory!
You saw the subtle judgehate in Larsec's song lyrics right? :)
Edit: At Alex, as far as DJCarbunk1e's E1M7 mix, I thought it was very disappointing. It may be a good dance mix, but it's gone way too far from the source material. Sounds like one of the pieces you'd see posted up in OCR0000-0500. The original had that military feel to it, and while I don't want to go down the same path as the people on doomworld and hold a remix to a genre, it's a long way for E1M7 to go in order to become a dance mix. (ie: I don't think it worked.) Which is probably why it's not getting amazing feedback.
Kudos to DJ Carbunk1e though, I enjoyed Glass moon and a couple other tracks I've heard in the Anime ReMix competitions. DJC's a great artist, I just don't think it worked with E1M7.

So I'm sitting here alone in my house. It's dark, and I'm all alone, and I'm listening to this double CD set called the Dark Side of Phobos. Just like I used to be when I played DOOM. Holy sh!t. This suite rocks, you guys. Here's my track by track analysis, but before I begin, I can't remember the last time a piece of music has so grabbed my soul and slammed it into proverbial hellfire the same way Darkness Dawning did; AWESOME work, Larsec (and Elsa, who's voice I assume was on the track).
0. Welcome to Hell -- The glockenspiel (sp?) and voices sound very Thief-esque (and System Shock-esque), but I guess there's a reason why scary, terrifying ambience seems to take the same form in so many incarnations: it works! (I don't mean to say that you guys ripped off the effect, either, just that it's recognizable.) The compilation works right from the beginning.
1. The amazing thing about Hangarmageddon is that it still manages to be new and exciting even though it's still in the same speed metal genre as almost every other remix of the song. Hangarmageddon manages to play with the classic melody enough to tear some amazing new riffs out of it and present them in showstopping fashion. Now that my guts are laying on the floor, let's listen to track 2.
2. Interesting move moving the tracks out of order. In my opinion, this is the primary ingredient to making this suite a success; the interpretations of the music are yours, and you let me know that by presenting it to me in an order different from what I'm used to. This isn't a cover, this is fresh off the fire in every way.
While I'm at it, I also have some comments on the track. :) The Red Moon is very well done. It transitions quietly from the song before, but quickly steps up the pace to a more controlled level that I think set the tone for most songs across the rest of the compilation (until Darkness Dawning). The guitar/synth (can't tell) that plays the theme is reminiscent of that very listenable and enjoyable guitar from Unreal Tournament. It also sounds like some elements of the original song were mixed in in true OCR style, but with a quality and complexity above the common remix, from beginning to end. I'd listen to it again, but I have 20 more tracks to write up, so...
3. The use of a deep choral drone in this song shows how this suite of remixes takes the atmosphere of the game and extrapolates it into a sleek, stylized interpretation. If this song were a visual experience, it would have glassy environment bump mapping all over it -- Industrial Strength indeed. The chorus is almost like Halo, but this is more evil than lonely. Four tracks into this compilation and it's still completely fresh. By this time, most compilations -- heck, most commercial albums have let me down. My only complaint is that I can't quite pick out the bass melody I'm used to hearing in the original. I guess it's cleverly woven into the fabric of those squeeling synths, because subconsciously the song doesn't bother me and seems to fit right in there. Hmm, wait a sec... Yes, the bass is there. Damn, this is good. (And yes, I'm listening to the album through (for the third or fourth time) as I write this, thus the stream of consciousness). I want more of this song, but it's time for track 4.
4. The bass at the opening of Mystery Meat almost gives this song away, but not quite. My impression of the guitar in this song is that it echoes from above onto you, then crushes on you at the end like the sky is falling. Then around 3:32 it becomes pure evil. Clever bridges and variations on the theme.
5. Had the first 5 tracks not been so amazing, I might have let the beginning of The Leaning Tower of Babel fool me into thinking I was in for another cover. This was one of my least favorite tunes from the original Doom sountrack. I've tried to love it over the years, and this version gives it a hard enough edge to help me in that quest. I especially like the sudden transition at 3:36. While this is one of the simpler and straightforward remixes in the suite, it still sounds fresh. I suppose every remix set needs a few roots back to the original, and this (along with Hangarmageddon, so far) serve that purpose in the Phobos set. A welcome change after three very severe remixes, I suppose. Let's see what's up next...
6. Reprocessed sounds like it needs some distilling. I'm not sure how that repetative, tearing synth keeps from getting annoying, but it still sounds good after a few listens. Those are some groovin' variations of the theme. Very heavy, yet clean.
7. There are those glocks/chimes again. The chorus gives Ghosts of Mars away. I have to wait a little long to get to the main theme, but it's rewarding enough to hear it played on the glock. The long wait was a little anooying to listen through, but it works if you imagine the Space Marine drammatically walking down some sort of hallway with Lost Souls appearing from the walls in bursts of flame with every choral "ah!" in the same fashion the Cacodemons appeared from the walls in Level 8 of Doom II. This song lacks a climax, but that's fine. In that sense it's almost like a lead in to what's going to happen next. Let's see what we walk to at the end of the hallway...
8. Heh, The Chemical Imps starts out with drum-like footsteps. Even though the song tries to start innocently and quietly, I can tell it's headed for chaos. Is the sound really supposed to be that distorted? The effect is interesting, and rewarding now that I've forced myself to listen to it a few times. This'll be a difficult track for newbies to the VG and remix scenes to handle, but it's a welcomed style to me and, I woudl assume, other veteran ReMix listeners out there.
9. Demon Con Gusto? Interesting title. Very well done accompaniment in this song. The accompanying instrumentals are so good, in fact, that I find it a shame the way the melody just sits on top of everything without even attempting to blend in with the rest of the music. It's one of those tracks that's easier to root back to the original sountrack, and it's still of the same quality as the rest of the suite. It's certainly a style I haven't heard in this suite so far, and that helps keep things fresh. Now that I've gotten over my expectation of how the melody should sound, I really like it. Well done. I wonder what analoq would have done with this song if he was forced to thread the melody tightly in with the accompaniment. This song wins on multiple fronts: I like listening to it, and I want to hear more of it.
10. This Can't Be Good is, in this incarnation, reminiscent of a harp theme from Duke Nukem 3D and some of the quieter music from levels liek Facing Worlds in Unreal Tournament. I suppose after the musical idea of the song was (probably unconsciously) ripped off twice, it returns to its original owner in the Doom soundtrack. I wasn't expecting this song to be fast, but it works surprisingly well. Putting a quieter song near the end of the first album in a two disc compilation is something I like to do. It's like telling me I'm near the end, and keeping a low profile to account for the wear of constantly harsh music.
11. Here's a loud, in-your-face song that's remixed softly. If it didn't have an edgy undercurrent and a vein of evil running through every note, Jade Spawn would be a good song to listen to while I drift off to sleep. I'm at the end of album one and I'm hanging on every note for the next album to begin.
12. This has got to be a joke. There'd better be a very good explanation somewhere as to why I have carnival music breaking up my pleasantly disquieting Phobos experience. This is akin to playing In Flames music as the intermission for a Broadway production of Showboat.
13. The second album in the suite creeps in with a slow but steady guitar riff. After getting my insides ripped out and thrown around the room by angry demons for the last hour or so, this is the best way to go. Halfway through Infiltrator, it's back to the amazing play-on-melodies that Phobos has so far presented. I especially like what seem to be record scratches in this song. It adds a very nice feel to the ambience and reminds me that all of these songs are different. No matter how similar in style some of them may seem, I can easily place them all in separate genres.
14. Infected Lab has a really nice groove. Nice synth accompaniments, but it feels a bit simpler than the rest of the tracks in this suite. That's to knock it -- it fits right in there and helps keep this album feeling fresh even though I've been listening to it for over an hour.
15. At first this sounded like a moody, ambient track, but it cleverly resolved into a fascinating twist on the Hiding the Secrets theme. The last several tracks have been tame in comparison to the beginning of the suite. A nice effect, since those initial tracks wore me out a bit. This track gives me a feeling of false security; the Space Marine isn't in immediate danger, but the demons are waiting in the wings with baited breath. Expertly done. I really wasn't expecting a remix like this. What a pleasant surprise to have delivered!
16. The Glass Moon, from the onset of the chorus with tenuous electric bass in the background, sounded like it was going to pump some adrenaline back into the second album. The guitar seems to summon licks of flame with every note. Then, sure enough, I'm back into a hard hitting beat. The waves of bass sound so thickly textured that the melody melts into it. This song makes very good use of the laughing effect. The guitar sounds so live that it'd be a shame to think that the same riff was copied and pasted throughout the track, instead of being played for each individual repitition of the theme. I can't tell if it was or not. I'll have to listen to it more. To my ear now, it sounds live, and gets my stamp of approval.
17. Ocean Pollen is the last name I'd expect to see on a Doom soundtrack, but in some twisted sense I can imagine some demonic nautical scene. This song manipulates the theme very well, moreso than any song has for about half an hour.
18. I'm almost fooled into relaxing to Aria of the Damned when it starts with a truly heavenly sound. The orchestration in the song is outstanding. The only problem is that it doesn't last long enough. Even though I've been listening to this suite for a while, I still yearn for more of this good stuff, especially something that's as new to my ear as a Doom theme redone as a beautiful yet sinister aria. I'd like Hemophiliac and pixeltricks to do an extended version of this track.
19. The variations on the theme in Iron Cathedral are excellent. It packs its entire message into a concise musical expression. It's a shame this song isn't longer. I expected it to have a slightly harder edge in following the example of The Glass Moon, but it works very well as is near the close of the second album.
20. The finale is upon me, and I finally get to the title track; what an excellent way to sum up the Phobos experience. The music is tenuous, but without climax, and then resolves into a beautiful piano piece. It's almost as if the Space Marine has finally destroyed the ultimate evil. That surprise ending is just amazing.
21. Holy sh!t.
22. Whoa, let me try to write about the 21st track again...
21. What better way to sum up an experience of true evil than to have an ominous theme with a beautiful voice above it. The vocal echoes and vocal accompaniment give the voice a perfect evil edge. Then it's all sucked to hell as the devil's true nature is revealed and you're brought in. Darkness Dawning indeed! This track is pure genius and disturbingly captivating. It's scary how well the true essence of evil is embodied in this song. Very well done!
22. True to the Doom theme of a gruesome yet hilarious ending, ElectroCute Bunny seems like the sountrack for a short scene that's played after the credits finish rolling in a movie. It's complex enough to earn its place among the other wonderfully mixed interpretations in this suite.
All of the tracks in this suite are amazing. I expected some to be different, and suggest changes here and there in the spirit of remixing, but every single track is a work of genius. An equal work of genius is that they combine to form a cohesive set, not a mishmosh of disjoint tracks.
The planning and execution of the Phobos project turned out perfectly in the end. I couldn't have asked for a better ReMix; different, perhaps -- but that's the spirit that inspired this ReMix, and in that same vein, will hopefully inspire many more!

They cleaned up an arguement between me and the judges. So no one else can see it.
Hmm. Anyways, save any further discussion regarding what was being argued about for PM or AIM. This isn't really the thread to start a flame war between forum members and judges. Get enough of that as it is in GD and Unmod.
I've had some time to look over the posts in question and I agree with Gray's decision to seperate them from the thread - keep this for reviews, critique and comments on the project. We can talk about the judges panel decisions but TRY not to turn it into a Judges = bad discussion, guys. I've always held the panel in the highest regard even when it seems like they're being OMGBADGUYZ - which in most cases is just constructive criticism reinterpreted as attack. It's not that the panel gets mixes up on the site because they are judges, but rather that they are judges cause they get mixes up on the site. Keep that in mind.
Back to the regular schedule.

The bass at the opening of Mystery Meat . . . My impression of the guitar in this song is that it echoes from above onto you, then crushes on you at the end like the sky is falling. Then around 3:32 it becomes pure evil.
Hmm, Didn't I hear that line from a Tori Amos song?
Thank you for listening to my song and complementing on it's "evilness". It would of been 110% evil, but " " was on holiday. So, I could only make it pure evil. :(

out of interest, nousentre. The beginning of your Mystery meat piece sounds an awful lot like the beginning of a Final Doom track, with the ride cymbal and the bass. Very cool. :)

Mystery Meat is theme music for a sick massacre, a terrible slaughter.
Since I downloaded DSoP I've started playing along with the tracks on my guitar. These are about the best remixes in my collection to jam with. I'm having a blast. My neighbors must be having fun too

Larry has no friends.
Anyway I never commented on this soundtrack. Great, professional job all around, though dark music like this doesn't really suit my tastes, so I probably won't listen too often.
Still, pretty solid.
