Stevo: Alright, finally have an update for you folks. Had a talk with the staff and, for the time being, I'm going to be stand-in director for Vroom. It might take me a couple days to get situated and contact all of the mixers involved to status update the project, so please bear with me during this process. Considering the WIPs that I've heard thus far, this album has too much potential awesome to let it sit stagnant.

The aim of VROOM is to create the best collection of driving tunes imaginable; a collection of ReMixes covering the very best music from SEGA’s Arcade and Home Console Racing heritage.

But first, how about I provide a little exposition?

Imagine yourself, deciding on some random whim, to go for a drive on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. Windows down, sun blaring, you speed out of your driveway and off down the road. Imagine that you put your favourite mix CD or playlist on. What kind of music would compliment your appreciation of this gorgeous day? Do you want to cruise? Or maybe speed up a bit? Or perhaps ram someone off the road because the bastard cut you off; all the while, the skies are blue and the road beckons you to continue. You don’t really care where you end up. All that matters is that, for now at least, it’s just you, your car, the perfect playlist and the open road.
This is the feeling we want to capture on this ReMix album. The music from SEGA’s racing back catalogue lends itself perfectly to this ideal... mostly because that entire vibe essentially started with OutRun (bar perhaps the road rage), and continues to be such right up to this point. The vast majority of SEGA Racing games support this ideal and it is in this that the inspiration for this Project comes. That and the fact that SEGA‘s Racing music is legendary. You could hear “Daytonaaaaaaaaaaaa” ANYWHERE, and you know exactly what it means, what it’s from, and that everyone else around you knows the tune. The same goes for anything from OutRun. These tracks are iconic in ways that very, very few other game music tracks could ever hope to be.

We've got Private Subforums here on OCR for this project too, so everything should be as smooth and go down as well as a bourbon and coke on a Friday evening.

One thing I do ask with this project is that keep we keep the remixes cheery and upbeat, regardless of genre. The point of the album should be clear by now, so I don’t think I need to reinforce why this is important.

So, in closing, VROOM: The Best of SEGA Racing promises to be the best collection of driving tunes ever. With music covering SEGA’s most popular racing titles (and with a few lesser known, but still totally awesome tracks), VROOM promises to be all your best sunny, Saturday afternoons all rolled into one album.

And you can’t argue with that, can you?

I'd like to suggest that if enough people want in that a track or two from Sega and Sonic All-Stars Racing be added, as it is probably the best kart racer out for the current generation (yep, better imo than MKWii).

Yeah, Sonic & SEGA All Stars is my favourite kart racer, period. We'll see how it goes, but that is a great idea, and one I've actually stewed on for a while. I'm pretty happy with the setlist, but again, it's early days yet, so anything could happen :D

Depending on how much interest is shown, I actually have been considering adding a couple of Sonic & SEGA All Stars Racing tracks... It IS one of the best SEGA Racing titles in recent memory, and it's got some absolutely fantastic tracks. If I were to include a couple of tracks from S&SAR, it would probably be these two:

Haha! Well, it really depends on the subject matter of the tune i would be putting myself on.

If i know what the subject is then i can go for it all myself and write the lyrics on my own.

I could rap some lyrics that someone else has provided for me but this method tends to have me feeling a little detached initially and requires me to get used to the lyrics since i didn't write them. What with rap being stuff you've written yourself, if i'm rapping something that was written for me i'd need time to connect to it. If worst comes to worst i'd speak with the lyric writer to see if things can be tweaked so it's more in tune with my style. There are different styles of rap to take in to consideration too, like i wouldn't be able to spit lyrics reaaally quickly like a Drum&Bass MC might do. I guess my style fits under the whole 1990's old skool rap era. What you've heard from me so far is what you would get, so to speak.

If i don't know the subject matter of the song i'll ask to be given information on what is needed in the song and i can craft lyrics from that.
I like to think i'm pretty versatile in being able to write lyrics. I've rapped about all kinds of crazy things in the past, from working in retail to an entire song i did for a friend about them liking corn, lol. Give me the subject matter, let me get a feel for the beat too so i can hear the tempo and pace and i'll write no problem.

It's worth noting though that while i can rap and record i am unable to tidy vocals, i'm not good with the whole technical side of music making. The track i rapped on on Lucid Dreaming i asked Level 99 to fix my vocals so its sounds neat and tidy. At the end of the day, i'm really just a rapper. Someone would have to fix up the sound of my vocals for me if they wanted my vocals on a tune.

Nup, complete re-interpretation dude. Alter it in anyway you like. So long as I can tell what the source is, your free to re-imagine it in any way that you wish to do so.

Keep in mind that the project is going very much for a 'happy album' vibe... awesome driving tunes that literally make you feel the sun on your face, the wind in your hair, and asphalt under your tires :D

I'm playing through SSF with my 360 Controller, which has no dead-zones at all for the analog sticks, so you'll see me fighting the bastard every step of the way. But that does not take away from the beauty of Sega Rally Saturn's Replay Mode. Gorgeous it is.

I did have one musician i asked to see if they wanted to maybe develop this idea for me but i got a feeling they're busy as i'm not hearing from them, which is fine. Not true! :D We've got an awesome balance at the moment of Beginner, Advanced, and Expert at the moment. We've got five 'Cruise' tracks, four 'Speed' Tracks and three 'Road Rage' tracks... and they're all sounding absolutely fantastic!

Cannot wait till we get the private sub-forums up and running!!!

Finally got my substantial WIP in. So much better working with a computer free of dust / cat hair. As soon as my song got heavy it would glitch out and be impossible. It is now 35C (!!) cooler. A lot easier to be creative when you're not pulling your hair out.

Hey! Thanks for the suggestions! Probably not looking at adding any more to the setlist at this point... I'm happy with the quantity of tracks we have at the moment, and the project as a whole is at a good, manageable size; I don't want the thing to become too big.

Alright, finally have an update for you folks. Had a talk with the staff and, for the time being, I'm going to be stand-in director for Vroom. It might take me a couple days to get situated and contact all of the mixers involved to status update the project, so please bare with me during this process. Considering the WIPs that I've heard thus far, this album has too much potential awesome to let it sit stagnant.

I know I've only recently taken over VROOM, and I had every intention of treating it with the same level of dedication and love as Robbie would have, and as I have done in the past with the NiGHTS album. Unfortunately, as quickly as I have come into this position, I must unfortunately bow out just as fast.

Here in the OCR community, there is a phrase that gets passed around and is, to me, one of the fundamental reasons this community has existed and thrived so healthily for so long:

Real life comes first.

As is the way of life, things are always changing in unpredictable ways. At this time, I'm unable to adequately fulfill my duties as a project director for this album. I am not making this post to draw attention or speculation as to what is going on in my life that is keeping me from running this. As much as I welcome the concern, I would appreciate everyone's respecting of my privacy. Hopefully, sometime in the future, I will be back to a state where I can pick many of my obligations back up. I am making this post because you all deserve to know what's going on with the album and its progress, especially since it has already been nearly dropped without a word once.

I have received a good deal of communication and updates which, unfortunately, I've dropped the ball on in regards to response (my sincerest apologies for that). I will be meeting with a few folks to discuss where VROOM will go from here and there should be a solidified replacement and gameplan before I fully bow out of this role. Whether it is me or whomever takes over VROOM in mine and Robbie's stead that gets back to those who've sent me stuff, I can not say.

Take heart, because this album has a very bright future ahead of it. Do not take the shifts in album management as a sign that the album is in any way doomed, because it is not at all.

Taking over the majority of project duties will be KyleJCrb. He will be acting album director. He will be assisted by DiGi Valentine, as well as myself whenever time permits. I will be keeping as close an eye on it as I can, since I was working with Robbie during the project's inception and in his stead will try to express what his best interests were at the time before he left.

Without replies i'm not sure if that means you're still on board, and it's leaving me in a situation where i'm unsure if i should re-assign the tracks you've claimed or not.

I will admit I was uncomfortable with things changing, but if this actually happens (quoted) I think it'll be ok. I would be uncomfortable if this changed in any way from what Robbie had started, that is the album I wanted to be involved in and hopefully the one I will continue to be involved in.

I love SEGA racing games and music as much as Robbie, if not more (remember, I'm the guy who says Daytona USA has one of the best game soundtracks ever written, and I'd probably put OutRun and After Burner in a Top 10 list too) and Robbie has been a great friend for years, so I want this album to preserve his vision and and pay tribute to these games as much as possible. Stevo, DiGi and I have no plans to depart from what Robbie wanted with this album, and we're looking forward to making it something we can all be truly proud of!

I would be uncomfortable if this changed in any way from what Robbie had started Not in the slightest. I can tell you right now, aside from any people who might drop their claimed tracks, the one and only thing that has changed was one of my own collaborations with Robbie on one MSR tune, and that is honestly down to me not wanting to take his idea because he clearly had plans for that song. I want to keep that tune free for him in case he should come back and want to do something with it in the future.

Aside from that, this album is pretty much heading in the exact same direction it was before it had all the down time, i can assure you :)

I just need to get some more replies from the artists involved to make sure nobody else is dropping their claims, and we're pretty much back on track!

Don't get your hopes up TOO much: the tracklist in the first post is NOT a representation of what the album currently looks like (though I can at least assure you that DarkeSword is still on board.) There aren't very many changes, but some claims have been dropped and a few things have been shifted around slightly. I'm hoping Stevo can update it soon.

ProtoDome is looking to be one of them, which is a massive shame as i was looking forward to his stuff. But when a project has been in and out of limbo for nearly three years these kinds of things are expected, sadly :(

In short, and summing up the status of this project, don't worry. It's still going to be representing some of SEGA's best tunes and i'm really glad to see this thing slowly up and running again! Give us time to iron out everything with everybody and we'll update that first post! Thankfully, not too much has been changed.
