Thank you OCRMVC viewers and video-makers who have made the OCRMVC such a success so far. Less Ashamed and I have been working on the details for the next challenge to make sure it as awesome as we can make it. And so we present to you:
OverClocked Remix Music Video Challenge 3
Viewing party info:
irc.esper.net #ocrmvc
Sunday January 23 @ 9 PM EST
The deadline for this challenge will be January 23, 2011. We will have an IRC viewing party that evening! More details to come.
The guidlines for participating are simple:
1. Pick a posted OCReMix. Posted album tracks from official OCR albums are OK, too.
2. Make a music video! But please, nothing so inappropriate or vulgar that it would break the YouTube guidelines (http://www.youtube.com/t/community_guidelines).
3. Upload your video to YouTube as unlisted. (From YouTube: "Unlisted" means that only people who know the link to the video can view it. The video will not appear in any of YouTube's public spaces, such as search results, your channel, or the Browse page, but the link can be shared with anyone.)
4. PM me the link before the deadline.
Participants

Call for artists
Additionally, we are looking for artists to create sigs and/or other images that we can use to promote the challenge. We are planning on promoting it to get as much participation and viewership as we can! So if we get a bunch of images that people can choose from to put in their sigs, on Facebook, Twitter, or wherever, that would be super awesome. Basically it just has to say "OverClocked Remix Music Video Challenge," and we can link it to this thread. If you do make an image, feel free to post it to the thread.
OK that's it... get to working on your videos and see you at the viewing party!!

Yes. Thank you for bringing this up. We def need to have an IRC party too. I don't know about the logistics of having it simultaneously with the live event. If that doesn't work out, we can just have 2 separate viewing parties, with the IRC party at a time other than MAGFest so that it doesn't conflict.

Not sure if I'll be able to finish something in time for the deadline (maybe I should do something less ambitious for #3, and then do my original plan for #4?)... but I have a BIG favour to ask of someone here. My apologies in advance for totally derailing the thread >_<
You may remember me mentioning in the previous thread that I wanted to finish a trilogy of 3 videos before I start on my music video. Now the first 2 videos are done, and I'm working on the 3rd - but there's one 6-second live-action shot that I'll need someone to record for me. The shot contains one character (Chef Gordon Ramsay), who can also double as the camera-holding-guy (and only needs to show his hand and/or arm). No acting skills are required, and the audio for the scene is already 100% complete. However the scene requires a "prop" of sorts to be made... a large (or medium??) bin/container/box with something written on it (or just written on a paper that's taped to it), containing a piece of spaghetti (preferably cooked, but raw is ok too) (I don't want to spoil the scene for someone interested in helping )
The video is a comedy, and the amount of silliness in it is... it's very very silly. If the shot looks totally amateur and really really bad, it will fit right in :nicework: In fact, if you so desire to make things bad on purpose for comedic effect, go for it :D
That said, even when I add bad special effects and bad drawings to my videos, I always make sure it's as easy as possible to follow for people watching it. If it's so bad that you have to think for three seconds "wait, is that supposed to be Chef Ramsay?", then you'll be too confused to get any jokes. If you really want to put effort into this 6-second shot (accurate clothes, good acting, multiple takes, appropriate location, etc) then by all means do!
I should be finished a big chunk of the video later today or tomorrow, so if anyone's interested in helping, I can PM a link to a private WIP video to show the context of the scene (which contains a badly-drawn pre-vis version of the 6-second shot itself)
For anyone who's curious about what I'm working on, here are all the videos in the series so far. Anyone who's familiar with Hotel (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nS956FdMPfc) Mario (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NQGA6eZmZyg&feature=related) should enjoy them =D

I've done a music video for one of my own tracks, as an experiment and test for the OCRMVC. Right now I'm trying to get my head around video editing software. It was shot on my iPod touch, and it came out better than I expected.

Hmm. Interesting. I'm surprised all of that was shot on an ipod touch. Cool song too.
My one critique would be, that if you are planning on shooting your video with your ipod that, since one or two of the shots came out a little choppy, that you might want to shoot things many times just in case.
Think 5 takes per shot and 1 will surface as the best. Promising work though, glad to have you excited to be on board.

Or just try to avoid handheld shots, if you can jury-rig your touch to a tripod. This guy (http://vimeo.com/12925855) was able to get shots comparable to a Canon 7D* out of an iPhone4 by using a Steadicam Merlin, but that's a near $1000 investment. But he has some good tips on his blog that may apply to the Touch as well, like playing back at 24fps for smoother motion.
*Not that DSLRs are all that great for moving shots either...

OK so I updated the first post to include the list of participants. I also wanted to remind people that we are asking for artists to volunteer their time to make a banner! I will be working on one soon and post it here within the next few days so that we can promote this more.
So, anybody else out there want to sign up? How is everybody's videos going?

I've been wrestling with the right idea to attempt this time around. My budget is, like, in the negative so I may enter a non-filmed entry this time.
I'm definitely interested in doing something flash or after effects based though.

SO glad to see this continuing. If I am going to be at MAG, then I will get something done, but that is not a for sure yet for me. I have two 4th year classes compressed into one month, the month of January, and then I have a 9 week practicum. I don't know if I will be able to take the time off to fly, totally depends on the schedule for next semester.
Gotta see what flights will cost too.
Don't put me down yet, we'll see.

hmmmm... so I got a GREAT music video idea last night... or at least I thought it was great - now I'm debating whether I should do it or not. Flashback time:
*cue harp sound*
Almost four years ago, I started an OCR Fan Art Competition entry that was going to be a comic (pictures and words), with navigation and some minor animation in Flash. I made a lot of drawings for it (and completed them all), but barely made any progress in the Flash department. Although, I did successfully cut a ReMix and a SNES song into pieces, to play different bits when you advance to the next panel. I've been meaning to finish the thing since forever, but I've never really felt like it.
Unflashback time:
So yesterday I got the big idea "hey, why don't I use all the drawings I made for a music video for OCRMVCOMGLOL??!" The ReMix was picked out literally 3 years ago. And having the pictures without text would be totally awesome, both because it leaves more up to the imagination, and because I wouldn't have to include the crappy script I wrote. And it's by far the easiest music video idea I've gotten (I could probably finish it in less than a single weekend). AND, a slow animated slideshow of sorts would actually fit well with this particular song.
But then I realized the result would be pretty much the exact opposite of what one thinks of when one hears the term "music video". The song, by COTMM (http://ocremix.org/artist/4283/children-of-the-monkey-machine/remixes), is atmospheric and eerie, slow, tense and dramatic, and doesn't even have a sense of beat or rhythm for a lot of it. The math tells me I'd be switching images roughly once every 15 seconds. "Very slow animation with fitting creepy ambient music" is a much more appropriate label than "music video". The subject matter of the images won't exactly leave people with a positive feeling either.
Now that I've thought about it some more, I kind of want to make it... but will it belong in the viewing party?? Maybe diotrans can be the judge of that...?

I agree with this. I think we've had a lot of variety in our music videos, so I wouldn't say that there is any strict definition of what a music video should be, at least, not for this. It sounds creative, which is good, I got a lot of ideas and inspiration from our viewing parties where other people did completely different stuff than I would have ever thought of doing.

So I still haven't started yet. I'm hoping my amount of effort this time around will be somewhere between my first and second vid. I've got a few ideas in the back of my head which are all nearly equally feasible. Which one of these vague concepts sounds the most attractive to you guys?
1) -Heartfelt slow song with slow-mo/high-speed contrast & little-to-no message. - Skrypnyk
2) -Creepy-crawly attempt at a horror effects showcase. - Earthworm Jim
3) -Something sad with a robot. - Wizards & Warriors
4) -A non-fictional characters piece of multiple people's daily routines. - Chrono Trigger
5) -A flash or photo-based fast and/or complex object = sound = object experiment which will take a disgusting amount of time. - Shnabubula
With such minimal information, does anyone have any votes on these options?

I wanted to ask how many people who are participating or planning on attending the viewing party will actually be attending MAGFest. It occurred to me that I may well be the only person involved in the OCRMVC who is still planning to go to MAG. If nobody else here is going, maybe it makes more sense to just have the IRC viewing party and change the weekend? (Since I wouldn't be around to coordinate it if it was during MAG.) So yeah, a show of hands from everyone who is planning to either submit a video or otherwise just attend, and whether you will be at MAG or not would be nice. Thanks!

So yeah, that was our original intention when we decided to have the viewing party at MAGFest. Unfortunately, I tried to get a panel room at MAG, but it was too late. We just started the planning for OCRMVC3 too late to get an official room. So we were thinking we could just have an informal gathering in like somebody's hotel room on a laptop. We would post about it in here and elsewhere on the internet, but then we're really not drawing any more additional people than whoever we'd already be reaching by our own self-promotion. And by the sounds of it, nobody here will even really be around at MAGFest for even that. So yeah that is why I'm trying to decide whether it makes sense to still do it.

All right, I thought about this a lot, and I have come to the conclusion that it doesn't really make sense to do a viewing party at MAGFest. I think it would have been really neat if we could have gotten a panel and been on the convention schedule and had a room with a projector and lots of random people stopping by to check out the videos. But because we weren't able to get a panel, the only thing I could really do is have an informal gathering of people, and I don't even know whether I'd be able to get enough people to have a viewing party. It's really too bad that pretty much all of the people who made videos and are involved in the challenge won't be at MAGFest, because if that were the case, I think it would be totally worth it to get together and just have our own party even if it was a small gathering. But being that the people who made videos won't be present, I feel like me getting a group of people to watch all the videos in a hotel room lobby would be like having a birthday party without the guest of honor.
So I'm very sorry to anybody who is disappointed by this. However, we will be much more prepared for this next year, and now we know we have to submit our MAGFest panel early.
Being that the viewing party will not be at MAGFest, I guess let's have it the weekend after, at our usual Sunday 9 PM time? So that would be Sunday the 23rd.
Good luck everybody!! I can't wait to see your videos!

That's good. Goody good.
I'm halfway through my video, but I have a small issue with one of the 'rules'. I understand why you'd want the videos to be uploaded as unlisted, but when I do that my subscribers never see it in their feed as a newly uploaded video, even after I switch it to 'public'. I only have like 300 subscribers but I'd like for them to notice the video too... so does it HAVE to be unlisted?

I hadn't even thought of that. We like to keep the videos a secret until the viewing party to give it more impact and specialness. But I understand the problem of uploading and then later setting as public. Would you strongly object to uploading shortly before the viewing party, like a few hours or a day before? That way we can still keep it mostly secret but then all your fans will see it too.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think that subscribers might be alerted when you switch it to public (based on one of my subscribers mentioning they saw my video in their subscriptions thing). But I could be completely wrong. I believe I uploaded said video as private, then I set it to unlisted, then public. This was just a couple weeks ago.
In any case, it seems reasonable to allow uploading it as public, just to be on the safe side, no?

Yeah, I think it's OK. Anyone in the spirit of the challenge would naturally not look at the entries before the viewing regardless.
I will definitely have a video and it will definitely be using CryEngine 2 (more specifically, the Crysis Sandbox) That's all the information I'm giving till the viewing :]

Wow, inspiration just struck me last night of a OCR song I wanted to make into a music video, I was inspired in large part due to seeing a great non-ocr original cover music video that I think a lot of people should see, due to these amazing video editing skills being done by a 15 year old girl. It made me realize that if I want to start a career in video production industry i'm going to need to be able to beat the skills of this girl at least, lol and so I need more practice.
here's the video that inspired me http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vefzCt8T8LI
It wasn't until I decided to come here to download the song I wanted that I thought to check the forums and was surprised to find the deadline extended and not expired yet. I think this will give me another reason to start work on this video right now.
Looks like I only have 8 or 9 days so I'm not going to promise I'll have it done in time, but It would be really great to happen to make it a comp entry too. I hope to have something to bring to the viewing party when I see you all there.

That's some pretty advanced After Effects editing for someone who's 15, but I can't say I'm surprised. Kids are now growing up with access to editing programs like CS5 that are industry-leading powerful. When I started editing a few years ago, I thought I had found a secret way to get ahead in the industry, but the truth was that thousands of people were thinking the same thing.
The barrier of entry used to be very high in editing but now you can literally download a program and become a freelancer. So yeah, when I make a portfolio my work will have to be so good that it's indistinguishable from web or TV ads and programs if I want a stable career.
Just wanted to give my two cents on editing :)
EDIT: Also, I'm struggling to get my video done between work, college, and keeping the apartment in shape, but I'm halfway done so I hope to gosh I can finish it >_<

Been working all day on my Music Video. I've got the beginning calmer bit nearly done, but things are going to get difficult in the upbeat parts.
I've had spend most of the day just cutting clips out of a 10 hour documentary to narrow down what I have to work with.
Hmmm 10 hour documentary. I wonder if anyone can guess what I'm using clips from for my music video.
Good Luck everyone else.

Right you are modus, geez that clue gave it away easy.
I'm a little less impressed by the Music Video I mentioned earlier when it only took me 2 quick tutorials on You tube to learn to do the things she had done in the video that I didn't know how to do. It's just a matter of learning what all the effects can do when I haven't even touched most of them. I'm now using that information and making the upbeat part of the music video almost exactly how I imagined it in my head.

I've been testing some filters in an app I bought yesterday, including this filter (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PgEbuFYTe7s). I plan on using my iPod touch exclusively for editing, and now that I've figured out a way to sideload video content onto the iPod I'm free to incorporate external footage alongside things I've shot.

It's not looking good for me either actually, not because I'm out of time but because I'm completely burned out and am so tired of staring at my editing screen. I need to take a break to keep my sanity. I also regretted the last video I rushed on because of pressure from a time limit.
Tell you what though, since it is 70% done and large portions of the video are completely done and look awesome I'm going to show it at the viewing party anyway and I think people will understand how great it will be when the blanks are filled in.
I don't care about winning the competition I just want to show off my work.
Also at the last viewing party people had trouble staying in sync while watching the videos because they could not download HD videos as fast as everyone else. I think we should all wait until everyone has loaded the video and all press play in sync. Especially since my video was made to be seen in HD.

Same idea here but I'd like to express it differently:
