Hey everyone! Welcome to...
OverClocked Remix Music Video Challenge 4
The deadline for this challenge will be Sunday, May 1, 2011. We will have an IRC viewing party that evening!
Viewing party details:
May 1, 2011 @ 9:00 PM EST
irc.esper.net #ocrmvc
The guidlines for participating are simple:
1. Pick a posted OCReMix. Posted album tracks from official OCR albums are OK, too.
1b. Please share which remix you will be making a video of! Just so that we don't all pick your remix too ~_^
2. Make a music video! But please, nothing so inappropriate or vulgar that it would break the YouTube guidelines.
3. Upload your video to YouTube as unlisted. (From YouTube: "Unlisted" means that only people who know the link to the video can view it. The video will not appear in any of YouTube's public spaces, such as search results, your channel, or the Browse page, but the link can be shared with anyone.)
4. PM me the link before the deadline.

Call for volunteers
The previous OCRMVCs have been a success, and we would like to see it grow and expand to more participants and viewers. We would greatly welcome any volunteers who would be willing to create a promotional banner or trailer video, and are asking everybody to help spread the word!!

Hey I will definitely want to be a part of this, especially if the person I want to collaborate with does too and that deadline should work well. Since there isn't going to be any winners or prizes then collaborations shouldn't cause any complications.
Would you like us to post which remix we are making a music video for. I think that would be a good idea, not to outlaw people from doing the same tracks but just to make people consider doing something else.
I think I have already found a remix that I want to make my next video for and this time it is a very new one.

Yes, at least one other person from the discussion was in favor of doing this, so why don't we try it out. I'll update the original post.

I don't think it should be a 'rule' to not pick the same mixes, but there are people like me who would strongly prefer to do a unique mix.
I'm considering these two mixes:
Transient Shadows - Willrock
mAEt b0y - A_Rival

On a related note, my video idea would greatly benefit from having a person in a Mario suit. Just putting that out there. ;-)

I'm going to try and do one. If I get enough headway into one a few weeks before the deadline then I'll sign up. (My main concerns are that (1) I might not have enough time to devote to it before my short summer break, and (2) I just switched to Linux and I'm having to learn a bunch of new software.)
My plan is for one or more of the Super Mario World remixes, by the way. But if someone else wants to pounce on that then go ahead. KF

Well, I was gonna make a 3D motion graphics video, but this 12 second little project I did is taking 2 weeks to render so....
I'll probably combine 2D and 3D instead. If anyone is good with Illustrator and wants to collab, let me know. I just need toons drawn, and I can animate them... no need to draw your stuff frame by frame :)
Grr, just wish I had a $10,000 workstation computer...

This is why my projects tend to lack adornment; it's not just my minimalist aesthetic. All the really cool effects require more render time than a single laptop can handle :(
Grr, just wish I had a $10,000 workstation computer...
As long as you're wishing, a farm of twenty $500 computers would yield quicker render times than a single $10,000 computer. CG scales horizontally.

Good to know, but I fixed that insane render time by removing 'reflection blur'. Apparently that's an extremely intensive feature..
It's all rendered out now (well, what I have done so far).. and posted in collab forum to find a sound designer :)

I too, have to make videos without a very powerful computer. I get around this though by often splitting my video up into separate projects and rendering each one separately before combining them in one final render.

We took a bunch of pictures for my video last night. It is a very small part of everything that needs to be done for the video, but at least that was the first step.
Historically I might be the kind of person to work on a project and not reveal anything about it until it's done, to keep things as a surprise. But I thought I'd try something different this time and show previews of stuff along the way.
So at the risk of completely ruining the mystique of my music video... here is a picture that will give you pretty much no idea what my music video is about:

My computer's been having issues lately and I just finally up and got a new one. We'll see where this goes, but a lot of it critically depends on me being able to get a few programs working in WINE with my recorder...
Eh, it's looking less likely that I'll be able to do this in the time I have. I'll cross my fingers. KF

Hey everyone, I have been really busy and should have started my Pirate Shout music video by now. I have discovered however song called Snow Motion by Sky High that I already have footage to suit and my Pirate Shout idea is probably too ambitious to do for this OCRMVC. So i'm thinking first an editing job for Snow Motion in this OCRMVC and then a dress up and film myself for the next OCRMVC. Mainly because Pirate Shout is too awesome for me to want to do a half assed job for.
Look forward to it.

I'm planning to put together a huge filming party this weekend with lots of local OCR people to come help out and watch and it should be super fun. I'll try to get people to take pics of the whole thing so I can post them here.

I wish I could be there, if only I wasn't in Australia and wasn't a poor student.
I have made a lot of friends over the last few days, I just came back from Media Camp, because I am studying towards making video production my career and I made a lot of new friends that should hopefully be willing to help make Pirate Shout something epic. I may even be able to borrow professional film making equipment from the school. So starting from tomorrow I'm going to start organizing something on a professional level for Pirate Shout. The main thing stopping me from doing it immediately is a lack of money to do anything like hire costumes and locations etc. I need to get my overdue course fees paid and then get a non-pirated (lol, awesome pun) copy of vegas. So despite me being totally enthusiastic about this it's lack of funds that's keeping me from doing it right now.
In case you guys are interested I made a short 37 second music video to Lunatic Moon by Sixto Sounds, it was a trailer to a review video I made. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mq66eWS_ywQ

We just finished part 1 of filming, and I am wiped. But I just had to share this with you. There were 8 of us: Me, Vinnie/Palpable, Stevo/Level99, David/Brushfire, Brandon/Harmony, Kaiser/Kizyr, Jarel/Arrow, and Arun. We had sooo much fun and I feel so grateful that everyone was willing to help out because they helped make this like a million times awesomer than I could ever do on my own.
Again, at the risk of spoiling my video or whatev, here are some pictures from tonight. Yeah it's not usually my style to give stuff away, I'd usually rather keep it secret, but I've decided I'm going to do the opposite of what I normally would do in the hopes that maybe it will inspire somebody else. (I think I said that already, in this very thread. Oh well.)

OK people we have 4 weeks left until the deadline!! How's everyone's videos going??
We are shooting again this weekend, and that will (hopefully) be the final session. Vinnie (Palpable) and I will be editing this together, possibly with the help of others involved in our SUPER COLLAB video. It will be interesting because we will be moving out before the deadline, so we will have to deal with packing/moving in addition to editing and the rest of everything else going on in life. You can also get hold of me to contribute ideas. What I know for sure is that it won't be longer than a minute and it'll be done with 2D motion graphics. Style-wise think "MTV" because even though their shows are stupid anymore, they have fantastic motion graphics.

BEHOLD!!!
I have taken the liberty of creating a YouTube account for the OCRMVC! http://www.youtube.com/user/ocrmvc?feature=mhum Please subscribe, link, RT, etc.
I made playlists for each of the past OCRMVCs. However, the first playlist has a lot of omissions because I couldn't think of where to find some of the videos off the top of my head and my brain is absolutely fried right now so I don't have the capacity to go digging around through the logs and forums. However, if you submitted a video in the first OCRMVC or know of the link offhand, please feel free to share here and I'll update it. Otherwise at a later time I'll go digging around.
Modus, do you have a YT link to your video that we viewed on Vimeo? Just so I can link it to my playlist.
I thought of putting up a simple webpage for the OCRMVC too, just to have a single place to store all the info, logs, video links, etc. Maybe when my brain is a little more unfried.

04-11-2011, 03:17 PM
I hesitate to say that there is a possibility of moving the deadline when we still have 3 weeks to go, because I feel that may encourage people to procrastinate and then hope for an extension >.> However, we have been lax in the past and I suppose it is a possibility, if everyone agrees they'd like an extension and we don't have any videos to show by that date. Vinnie and I are also extremely busy and we're not sure if we'll get ours done in time, but we are also prepared to just show what we have so far if that's the case. I just don't want people to get upset because I know in the past, some people have worked really hard to make sure theirs was done by that date, and then felt it was unfair when there was an extension given for other people, and I agree that's unfair to those who worked so hard to meet the deadline.
Argh how do I always end up making these things tl;dr. To sum: Yes there is a small possibility the deadline will change, but I would like to avoid that if at all possible. So assume it will be May 1.
Modus

That's understandable. If I don't have my video done by deadline when we had 2 or 3 months, that's on me. I just refuse to submit rushed videos anymore because that's what I did last time with the Crysis one and I wasn't too happy with it. I'll just have to take all the time I need to finish a video the right way and submit it regardless of when deadlines are.
Maybe when summer comes around, I can plan more accurately.

Argh how do I always end up making these things tl;dr. To sum: Yes there is a small possibility the deadline will change, but I would like to avoid that if at all possible. So assume it will be May 1.
Yes, boss, it'll be May 1st! :D

Wow do I ever regret revealing my mix before making it, because now I have decided not to go with Snow Motion. Apologies to SkyHigh who may have been looking forward to it. When I was walking home listening to random OCRs on the way. I heard one that got me so motivated that I started working on the video as soon as I got home and already have it 30% done as I speak in the same day. I was procrastinating on Snow Motion, because my motivation for it fizzled out after I waited so long to start and had heard several more motivational mixes afterwards.
So bottom line cancel Snow Motion, and put me up for a mystery mix. I've learned why it's not a good idea to reveal the mix your doing. I will probably have mine finished before the end of the weekend at this rate. It's great when you finish well before schedule.
So I'm voting for no extension, unless an extension nets us several more videos and remember you can also show a partially finished video, like I did. I was not burned at the stake for it.
Good Luck everyone I am soooo looking forward to showing my video, it's going to be amazing and my best work to date.
I will give everyone a one word hint as to what's coming...
SPRITES!

WOOT SPRITES!
I agree, my idea of revealing mixes was a bad one because I find myself being motivated to do a certain one sometimes and then I switch to preferring a different one. I still fear picking the same mix as someone else, but the risk is pretty low with the amount of remixes available.
And yes, I am still working on the promo video and I think it'll come out decent. Protodome digs one of the designs I did so it can't be too bad :D

setzer: We're still going to see a super spectacular video for Pirate Shout someday, right??
I don't feel bad for saying what my video was, even though it ruins the surprise factor, but I also noticed it is building some interest/anticipation for the finished result. So maybe it's worth it.
Status of our video is about the same. We're not sure if it's going to be done on time, due to the fact we'll be spending the next 2 weeks packing and moving all of our things (and then unpacking them again). However, we'll definitely have something to show, even if it's unfinished.

Pirate Shout is still one of my favorite OCRs of all time, I just want to wait until I'm financially stable enough to hire costumes and a good location to make such a video, because I think it deserves a really good video I should probably evolve my video editing skills a bit more before trying to do justice to my favorite remix.
So yes Pirate Shout will be done someday, but not until I have some money in my pocket to fund it, which I may have to wait until I finish my studies and have a real job for.
My mystery remix is coming along great I believe I could claim 50% completion my video editing tricks get more and more elaborate as the song builds up. So later points in the song will probably take longer then the earlier ones.
I agree Chernabogue I am at a far enough point that I could reveal my mix and still be able to finish it. So yeah we should at least start making a remix before we reveal it. Because the problem with Pirate Shout and Snow Motion is that I hadn't even started working on them when I announced them. However when I have started something I rarely leave it unfinished out of fear of wasting my hard work to date and nothing short of the apocalypse or death will keep me from finishing thhe video at this point.
However even as a viewer I enjoy having no clue as to what remix is coming, so I think I will continue to keep mine secret.

Hmm I just rendered my 85% complete video to see how it looks and for some reason there are occasional glitches that definitely have have nothing to do with the timeline. For example at one point my background video disappeared to black for a millisecond and some of my sprites would suddenly disappear or change position for a millisecond.
It's not a big deal as I'm talking very short glitches here and only a few throughout the whole video, but if only I could get rid of these it would make the video look so much more professional.
Has anyone got any ideas as to how I can fix this? I am using Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum. My computer may not be powerful enough to handle it, I might try rendering it on a friends more powerful laptop when I'm done.

I've had similar problems with Vegas. What fixed it for me was a reboot and then rendering it all as soon as I opened the file. Editing can wear your system over time and cause weird stuff.

Wow thanks for the response I was about to edit my post and add some more information only 5 minutes after I made, but I guess I'll post it here now.
The video effects also seem to blend with videos on other layers for again a millisecond. ie, my non wavy video becomes wavy like the video behind it.
Anyway thanks modus I'll try that next time I render it.

Dio, I need the IRC server/channel info and the time of the viewing party (with timezone) to put in the description please.
Otherwise, my promo is done! A few words about it: it was slightly rushed, unfortunately, because it's almost finals week for me. Lots of projects due. The OCR logo intro on the other hand was something I put a lot of work into so I hope you (and employers looking at my portfolio) like it! I only mentioned three artists because I wanted it to be a minute long. Yes, one of them is myself... how selfish of me! Yeah well, I figure I put a lot of time into making this so bleh :p To Dio: I'd probably need to tweak this a bit for it to be played at the beginning of the event as a teaser. The content isn't exactly appropriate for that sort of thing, but I can make a second version.
And here ya go: http://youtu.be/jOsCfAeWjRA?hd=1
P.S. Even though setzer's segment was last and the most rushed, I think it's my favorite in terms of how it came out. Not sure why D:

This is a good question. I will state here that I (and the rest of the people involved) will have one video to show and I'm fairly confident it will be finished .) (Our preparations for moving tomorrow, on the other hand... >.>) And it sounds like Chernabogue is finished with 2, and setzer is making good progress on his, right? So that's 4 at least. I tend to find that a few random videos turn up at the last minute, so hopefully somehow that will happen again. Plus there is still a week left! So anybody who happens to not be insanely busy with other stuff in life... you might want to break out your camera and start filming something? .)
Modus, your trailer is awesome!! I am not just biased because my video is in it ,) I love what you did with the logo. The effort you put into it definitely shows. Even though by the time it's the viewing party, we obv don't need an invitation to it, I think it would still be nice to show it because the viewing party is about appreciation and discussion of videos, and I think this video is relevant enough. However, your video of Stevo/OA/DA dancing, while amazing, may not be as relevant ;-)
Here is the info for the viewing party:

You guys, Vinnie and I are both like sleep-deprived and totally brain fried with everything going on in our lives right now, but we have been trying hard to work 1-2 hours in on the video every day because we are so excited about it. It's about 85% finished, and I'm at the point where I'm picturing it in my head even as I'm trying to fall asleep. (I can't help but feel there is a bit of irony there, staying up thinking about my video for INSOMNIAC SKIES.) I'm biased but I think it's going to be really good!

Anyway I can at least stand up and say that I have something amazing to show you guys even if my computer shat itself now. I am 90% complete and to be honest this song is so damn long I have considered cutting the last 40 seconds. I don't know, as it stands at the moment my video is complete is complete except for the last 40 seconds that looks quite bare. I am considering cutting that, or I could make it the most epic part of my video I don't know. Honestly I am glad that I acted on this video so fast as at this point I am sick of hearing it. I had had random video ideas float around in my head before, but that was really the first time I thought it would be feasible to do one, once I saw other people doing it. I really hope we see more of the live action videos, even if they're not super polished or whatever, I think they are fun and they bring variety to the OCRMVC (since it seems that most of our videos are not using footage filmed by us). So yeah, I had this idea in my head for more than a year, and I finally decided to do it.
- This isn't that important, but originally, I had planned on wearing a spring dress for the outdoor scenes, since we were filming in spring. The temperature turned out to be in the 30's that day! But when I saw the coat + gloves outfit on camera, I realized that worked much better, because it captures the feeling of coldness and loneliness. We were all freezing our asses off, thank you crew members for sticking it out with me .)
- Our crew was brilliant and amazing and did a much better job than I would have alone. (Actually, alone, none of this really would have been possible.) They had all sorts of good ideas for places to shoot, angles, lighting, things for me to do on camera, etc. I already thanked them but THANK YOU AGAIN! I love you all!!
- So that guy in the picture is my buddy Aaron. When I was still planning the details of the video, I had mentioned to a few people that I'd need a guy to pose with me in pictures. People were wondering why I didn't just have Palpable/Vinnie (my dear boyfriend) do that. (In case you haven't seen the video yet... it should become obvious why at the end.) I'm really glad I didn't use pictures of me + Vinnie! I think that would have made me feel horrible, and weird for anybody to watch who knows us.
OK yes diotrans is tl;dr-ing again... >.> To sum up: OCRMVC4 was awesome, thank you everybody, love you all!! <3

Just finished watching all the videos. Amazing work everyone. Another really great installment. Although I was pre-occupied enough to not join in this time I'm still, as always, very very VERY interested in what comes out of these little get-togethers both online and irl.
As for my involvement; I've started a playlist on my ipod called 'ocrmvc ideas' and it's 9 strong, and I know I could double that. I would really like to do one again, and multiple friends have been asking me if/when they can get involved.
Special thanks to the amazing Amy for once again, not only organizing this fun and inspiring competition, but also joining among the ranks of contributors to show their real life faces in the footage. You put a lot of effort in this time and that deserves some special recognition.
ALSO; as the first ocremixer to do a video of her own song, this is easily, the most official video ever! Sort of... you know what I mean.
GREAT JOB!

I better do that soon, I'm actually working on a comedy skit video now as this has inspired me to make my channel more active in general, not just music videos.
I have actually had an idea for a live action video for a while, no not 'Pirate Shout' yet I'll do that when I have more money. Who knows I might make this next video before the next competition. Which makes me wonder, if I make something before the next competition and show it public-ally could i still have it shown in addition to a new main entry, because the wait could be too long with how inspired I am at the moment.
Great work everyone and I am becoming even more psyched for each consecutive challenge.
Thanks Dio for organizing these and the phenomenal effort of your music video this time shows that you take this really seriously.
I was worried about picking favorites but since other people have done it I'll say diotrans Insomnia of course and Chernabogue's Pokemon.

Between having problems with my internet, as well as my video editor, as well as other unmentioned issues, I wasn't able to get my video uploaded in time. Sorry.
Oh well, means I'll have to start putting ideas together for the next competition!
Edit: Oh yeah! The entries are pretty rockin' too!

Thanks again for the comments on my entry. My video wasn't what I had originally planned, but I like how it turned out.

I got around to watching all of the videos posted in the chat log. The Insomniac Skies video was great! I was digging the violin shots in particular; very nice. So sad that Aaron left you! =P

Forthcoming! I thought I'd just give it another week, and then announce it. I hope that's OK with everyone. I just didn't want to have another super long OCRMVC where all the momentum dies because everybody thinks they have forever to do their video >.>
BTW I updated the OCRMVC YouTube Channel (http://www.youtube.com/user/ocrmvc) with the promo video and a playlist with the latest set of videos. Duly noted that it could use some decorating so I quickly just changed the theme colors ^_^; If anybody wants to volunteer some artistic skills to make a nice background image or something for it, that would of course be welcome .)
