I'm really late on the boat, but I finally got the game and have been modding the oblivion out of it.
I consider these essential mods:
Enhanced Shaders WITH Darker Nights (addsmuch more drama and immersion)
Vurt's Flora Overhaul
Realistic Water Textures
Enhanced Night Sky
Cutthroat Merchants (Makes items sell for much less and cost much more. Choose between 5 levels of increased difficulty)
And damn this game looks good on my not-so-impressive pc... (anyone else pick wood elf?)

Pfffft, WOOD ELF? Nah, I'm so cool that I made a Khajiit who looks like and is named after my cat. I just thought it'd be funny to slay innocents with a bow and arrow as my cat, and as it turned out, it was indeed pretty funny. Bonus points for the ironic werewolf blood I acquired early on.
Anyone else finding that the game is really, really, really, ridiculously easy? I've been on master since I started, and umm... yeah, have not really had any difficulties after 40+ hours of play.

Khajiit freak me out. Tiger heads plopped onto human bodies is just odd.
I'm also on Master and as long as I have a companion, it's manageable. I look for mods like Cutthroat Merchants to up the challenge. A certain mod makes vampires instantly explode upon sunlight exposure, but that seems a bit much..

So.. I've logged in 19 hours of gameplay. Zero FPS issues on high settings. Zero crashes. One glitch ever. I've also got a boatload of mods installed and newfound love for Futura as a font.
I'm never bored. Archery is super satisfying. The only complaint I could possibly make is the mediocre companion AI.

I'm up to around 70 hours and despite having come across loads of random glitches (most of them hilarious - I managed to launch an NPC several miles using a door) the only crippling bug I've come across involved saving during the final boss battle completely screweing everything up. The only fix was reloading an earlier save.
Oh... and an "essential" NPC that turned inexplicably hostile and refused to stop attacking me until I modified him with the console, killed him and revived him... I have no idea how that happened :x

anyways i just don't get what people enjoy about this game, its cool to run around and kill stuff and 'do whatever you want' but its pretty much a big sandbox with spells and arrows and swords, and npcs that are broken and do stupid things.

Because the game does enough right that people let things like that slide as minor annoyances, or even a direct source of entertainment.

To put it simply, big games get forgiveness because they have so much content that it is expected to have holes and they're generally not game breaking. And it is incredibly hard to account for all the actions such freedom can have on a game. It happens with GTA too. Small games don't get forgiven because they have less to work on [with some exceptions].

Not like that hasn't already been enabled by most people since day one...
What I'd like to see is larger amounts. They know the game is going to get modded to hell for years to come, which is what will give the game its longevity, and having that extra RAM available beyond just 4GB would help that along immensely.

Jeez, I dunno what to say other than I've had no big glitches. Compared to Oblivion, this game is clean as heck.
As for the enjoyment factor, the devil is in the details:
The skill trees are exciting to unlock
archery and stealth feel rewarding and exciting
they did a lot to make dungeons not too repetitive
most shortcomings are simply fixed with a quick mod (like the 4GB thing is already enabled for me)
If you have the horsepower, the graphics are legitimately unprecedented
the world is highly immersive, thanks to the graphics and realistic questlines
with my solid state drives, loading times are about 5 seconds maximum
So to dismiss this game as just another sandbox, I just can't see it that way. They streamlined everything from Oblivion. Well, voice acting and dialogue animations are still pretty bad, but I'm having too much fun with the gameplay to mind.

I think the voice acting is really good... maybe you are thinking of the implementation? Like when an NPC gives you guff about how you should shut up or buy something and they sound all snarky, then you click "What have you got for sale" and suddenly they're all lollipops and rainbows and chips ahoy™ cookies.
I don't believe this to be true for one second

what's your point
he's saying that super mario bros (fantastic small game) took less time to tune and bugfix than skyrim (fantastic big game). hard to argue against.
tbh tho, i doubt gamers' forgiveness generally has much to do with realistic estimates of workload.
well, it's true that we tend to be more forgiving when it comes to badly misbehaving AIs in open worlds. it's because we don't know anything else...except ok working AI in more closed worlds.
as long as the bugs don't make it near unplayable, a weird aberration now and then actually may remind players that there's constant interaction going on between all the stuff, and that they're lucky enough playing this super early version of the holodeck utopia, so why bitch over every detail.

It's inconsistent. The female VAs are truly awful for the most part and other characters have no emphasis on anything they say. They say "oh my god, a dragon" in the same tone they greet you with.
It's definitely not all bad though. I really enjoy the well-acted Nord, ugly-lizard-face, and scottish-elf accents. Gives the game immersive variety :]

That's pretty awesome, but playing with a 360 controller makes the menus not so bad. My only gripe is that I want to map a quicksave and take screenshot button to the controller, but I'm not sure how.
Anyone have an idea for this? Know a program?

I never thought this would be a leading reason to use a 360 controller, but the rumble feature is seriously the best-implemented in any game ever.
When a dragon flies close over you, it rumbles just a tad then BAM, maximum rumble when it's right on top of you. It also rumbles on arrow shots and heavy hits. It doesn't sound like much but man, it adds to everything so much.
Also: 32 hours logged, zero crashes.

The creation kit is probably going to be released in a few days, but there's already some great mods you can get. Here are some of my favorite gameplay for rebalancing to make it more fun and/or challenging
PISE (http://skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=1269)
Deadly Dragons (http://skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=3829)
True Darker Nights (http://skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=2896)

Faster Arrows (http://skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=1009)
Snotgurgs Useful Food (http://skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=3942)
Playing with these in a sort of self-enforced hardcore mode where 1 death means it's completely over, can't use quickloads, can't use fast travel. The game is much more intense, enjoyable and rewarding this way.

Some useful console commands for taking screenshots:
tm - completely hides the UI. This includes the console itself, so you can use the console to effectively pause the game for some nicely timed screenshots in combat or whatever.
fov x - changes the field of view, with x being the value. I use 85 as the default value (Beth's default ones always make me naseous). Around 60 is good for closeup shots of your character and 100+ might be better for scenic stuff.
That's kind of a rude thing to say, I made the song because I love the Elder Scrolls, it wasn't an exploit
it's a kind of honest thing to say as it was a very nice exploit indeed, no matter if you intended or not.

Not sure if this has been posted. I wasnt going to search through 33+ pages. However I agree with a lot of what has been said in the screen capture seen here:

I think the dungeon variety this time is a lot better than in Oblivion and even Morrowind. But sadly it's true that Bethesda are just plain sub-par at game design/balance and they never seem to get better at it. Not just the awful level scaling, but also the fact that if you even give the slightest thought to minmaxing, the game quickly crumbles into a ridiculous exploit-fest.
Mods are pretty much essential for Beth games, I couldn't ever imagine actually enjoying them on a console. Having Obsidian make a Fallout game with their engine really showed just how much better other devs can be apart from the world design.
The biggest leap forward for Skyrim was the presentation. I never found Oblivion all that impressive thanks to the butt-ugly aesthetics and animation quality 1 generation behind the rest of the industry. Other things were slightly improved, or same as in Oblivion, or actually worse as is the case with the so obviously rushed and shallow quests. They really should just let Obsidian handle that stuff for them, but it seems unlikely as Elder Scrolls is their "baby" unlike Fallout.

Not all of us live in 1999 either. But I'm not sure how to link just the thumbnail.

the beautiful thing about skyrim (and why it is so popular, acclaimed, and financially successful) is, ironically, everything the screencap ragefag noted. Bethesda lays out a plethora of axes for the gamer to function upon, but does not force the gamer into any role at all. The gamer is completely, absolutely FREE to do whatever he wants, and to set the parameters of his own adventure. What this guy is mad about is not the game, but his own laziness and inability to step out of his usual role as merely an audience. A game like skyrim is simply NOT for him, whereas a game like, say... World of Warcraft, would be his cup of tea.
Skyrim is not about presenting the player with an adventure, but to empower the player to craft his own adventure.

absolutely, and like gecko has already pointed, mod can allow you to wrap the game around your way of playing.

I disagree quite a bit with that post. I think combat is fun/varied, the world is gorgeous (and fun to travel through), there's tons of customization, etc. He's right that the dungeon design is a little lame since there are few archetypes, but given how good everything else is... I can't complain. Easily one of the best games I've played in awhile.

I believe it's fairly simple to reduce just about anything to make it sound unfun as well

i usually play thief character so sneaking and killing in the shadow is my way to go, but with skyrim i like the Shield / 1H weapon system so far.

I'd like to say that this is the first game in the series to really pull me in, and a lot of that has to do with the immersion factor. The world just feels... alive to me. After 200 hours, I had to call it quits for a while.
Also, the new character designs rock. I can finally be a proud Khajiit without looking like a total moron.

Creation Kit is coming out any time now, but there's been some noteworthy mods released still without it.
Wars in Skyrim (http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=6176) - This dramaticly overhauls the random encounters you get outside the cities. Very customizable/modular. It's also updated fairly often with many additions so it's worth keeping an eye out for updates.
Extended Slider Colors (http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=6923) - Now you can make an orc with actual green skin. Or a pitch black dark elf. Or a pink khajit.
Realistic Ragdolls and Force (http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=601) - I haven't had any awkward ragdoll positions after installing this.
Categorized Favorites Menu (http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=4862) - A favorites window that actually makes sense for PC.
Various Guard Outfits (http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=6770) - Gives the guards actual unique uniforms as opposed to mere palette swaps.
This Japanese blog (http://dragonporn.ldblog.jp/) is worth browsing for mostly cosmetic mods. They list more than just the ridiculous anime stuff.

Creation Kit was released last Tuesday. I've been working all day on my first dungeon, with no prior experience whatsoever. I would say it has exceeded my expectations. Didn't expect to make anything of this scope so soon.

^Great looking dungeon! Beyond designing the architecture, what all goes into something like that / what's left? Item and enemy placement, insertion into the world somewhere...what all is involved with finishing something like that?

Cluttering is the catch-all term for placing items, furniture, candles, rubble and all that sort of detail. Then there's navmeshing which is basicly AI pathfinding for NPCs. Then you need to do the lighting, sounds, scripts, and finally optimizing so it runs smoothly.

I've completed the dungeon and uploaded it to Skyrimnexus. But naturally, the servers seem to go bonkers the minute I'm done with it.

I've also added it to that clunky mess called Steam Workshop

This may be a reaaalllly dumb question, but in all honesty I searched Google and could NOT find the answer on what I would think would be simple and straight forward question.
I have Skyrim on the PC - how the heck do I update it to the latest version (it's 1.4 or something right?) I can't figure how to do it on Steam, and Google wasn't any help...
Am I that pathetic or is there something more to going about this? Thanks guys! :D
Still haven't beaten the main quest yet.. argh! :banghead: Need more free time for Skyrim!
Cheers,

The game wouldn't be nearly as epic without the soundtrack. It does sound great as rock (good job too, Brandon!).
More on the topic of Skyrim, I quite enjoy the dying sound of a horse falling off a cliff. It's even funnier when you survive after rag-dolling down a slope.

Time for another batch of mods
Imps More Complex Needs (http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=10639) - Now you have to drink, eat and sleep or suffer penalties.
Frostfall (http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=11163) - Adds cold/hypothermia mechanics making you manage your body temperature.
Skyrim Monster Mod (http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=9694) - Adds more variety to the bestiary.

Skyrim Monster Mod (http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=9694) has recieved tons of new monsters lately. You won't just find retextured vanilla monsters, but also brand new ones such as werecats, minotaurs, lots of new daedra and even some monsters from Witcher 2.
Just keep in mind that it also changes dragon encounters making it incompatible with other dragon mods, unless you know how to patch them together.
If you combine Glorious Grasses (http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=9185) and Lush Grass (http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=3288) with Lush Trees (http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=3385) you get much denser vegetation which makes forests look like actual forests. It's two very simple tweaks that has a tremendous impact on the environment.
Signs and Guardians (http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=12932) overhauls the doomstone mechanics to be more like Oblivion/Skyrim, making them permanent signs that have more of an impact on your character progression. Each stone now gives you 3 different options to choose from. For example: Vanilla 20% faster combat exp, +50 health, or a temporary berserk buff from the Warrior stone.
Interesting NPCs (http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=8429) adds many more characters throughout the world you can interact with. Their dialog is much more fleshed out than the vanilla NPCs and is more reminiscent of older, less watered down RPGs. Some of the NPCs are even voiced. VA quality is everything from okay to pretty good.
