Introduction
The year is 2011, and the Robot Masters of the world have once again come together in order to fight for supremacy, but not with elemental abilities! No! They've decided to fight with a more potent weapon: PHAT BEATS, WAILIN' GUITARS, and OTHER SIMILARLY EPICALLY DESCRIBED MUSICAL ELEMENTS.

So begins OCR's second annual Grand Robot Master Remix Battle!

Voting and Results
Voting takes place at the GRMRB social group (http://ocremix.org/forums/group.php?groupid=7), here on the forums. Things to keep in mind when voting:


You are required to vote in each battle taking place during the round. If you don't, none of your votes will be counted for that round.
You are not required to vote in battles that have a competitor advancing by default.
You are required to make an actual decision between two competitors for each battle, meaning, you cannot declare a draw or a tie. This will be counted as not voting and your other votes for other battles will not be counted.
You are not required to give detailed reasons as to why you voted the way you did. However, artists always appreciate comments about their music, so consider leaving some feedback anyway.
When voting, consider three things: how well the mix is made from a technical standpoint, the enjoyability of the mix, and—most importantly—how well the mix arranges both source tunes.
Post the name of the remixer you're voting for in boldface text.
Post only once in each voting thread.
Everyone is allowed (and encouraged) to vote.


Submission
All entries must be sent to me (DarkeSword) via PM on the forums.
File names must be in the following format:
Remixer - Title (Remixer's Robot Master vs. Opponent Robot Master).mp3

Example:
DarkeSword - Snow Problem (Blizzard Man vs. Cold Man).mp3

Please note that the robot master names are two words (e.g. Blizzard Man, not Blizzardman). Also note that versus is abbreviated with a period (e.g. Blizzard Man vs. Cold Man, not Blizzard Man vs Cold Man). Your artist name and mix title can be whatever capitalization you want but the robot master names must be capitalized properly (e.g. Blizzard Man, not blizzard man).

Properly formatted file names make it much easier for me to tag everything properly, which ensures good, consistent metadata on all the files that will be distributed to voters. If you can, strip all ID3 tags from your file before you send it to me, because I redo all the tags anyway.

You must adhere to this file name standard. If you don't, I will seriously consider disqualifying you, and I don't think anyone wants to be disqualified just because they couldn't name their file properly. Last competition I got really cryptic file names like gmrb2wip.mp3 and frost.mp3, and that kind of crap is unacceptable. I like running these competitions, so please don't make the grunt work a pain in the neck for me.

FAQ
How does it work?
You, the remixer, choose any Robot Master from Mega Man 1-6 (NES), Mega Man 7 (SNES), Mega Man 8 (PSX), Mega Man 9-10 (DLC), Mega Man and Bass (SNES/GBA), or Mega Man Powered Up (PSP). Choose wisely, because this will be your Robot Master throughout the entire tournament. Once all competitors choose their Robot Masters, they'll be matched up with an opponent.

When the round begins, remixers will have one week to write a "VS. Remix;" that is to say, a remix featuring the themes of their own Robot Master and their opponent's Robot Master.

When the round ends, a public voting period of one week will be conducted for each battle. Voters should consider production, enjoyability, and how well the piece incorporates both themes.

Like last year's Grand Maverick Remix Battle, this year's tournament will be single-elimination, with two brackets competing on alternating weeks to make things manageable. There will be a Mega Man Bracket and a Proto Man Bracket.

So do I just pick a Robot Master? Is it first-come-first-served?
I'll be doing a draft again for Robot Master selection. If you're planning on participating, please post a list of five Robot Masters you're interested in claiming, in the order of preference. Once everyone posts their lists, I'll go through and assign everyone their first-pick, resolving any conflicts with a coin-toss and moving down the lists as necessary. You will only be assigned one Robot Master for the competition.

I don't mind if people really want to claim Robot Masters from last year's competition (especially the ones eliminated in earlier rounds), but I'd really prefer it if people picked other songs to remix, for variety's sake. Here's a list of last year's Robot Masters:

Time Man, Metal Man, Galaxy Man, Slash Man, Tornado Man, Stone Man, Magnet Man, Cold Man, Wood Man, Plant Man, Heat Man, Ground Man, Flash Man, Cut Man, Bubble Man, Magma Man.

When does it start?
The draft/recruitment period will last two weeks, so tell your friends and get people to participate! I'm shooting for 16 remixers, but if we get 24 or 32 that'd be phenomenal. Once we have the minimum amount, I'll gauge how much more interest there is and go from there. We should be starting for sure around mid-May.

I'm not a remixer but I want to take part somehow. What can I do to help?
We need sigs and artwork and stuff, so if you're good with the Photoshops, that'd be a big help.

What about Mega Man X/Legends/Battle Network/Zero/ZX?
This tournament is limited to the the main Classic series games.

Can I be Dr. Wily/Dark Man/Dr. Cossack/Mr. X?
Those guys aren't Robot Masters, so no, sorry. No intro stages either.

I think in general the Maverick remix battle had outstanding tracks from everyone. The first GRMRB had some great individual tracks, but in my opinion everyone really stepped up their game in the GMRB. We can only hope this compo will be as good! (I think it will) :-D

Yeah, that might be somewhat of a gray area since he did technically have his own stage with unique music, yet it was not part of the main game, and he was not a "robot master" in the traditional sense (i.e. not one of the 8 robots that must be defeated to advance to Wily's stages). Probably would need to pick another.

Why not though? He's not one of the "traditional" 8 Robot Masters, but he was part of the DLC in Mega Man9, he has his own stage, and you fight him at the end of the stage just like would any other robot master. I think we were mainly trying to avoid bosses from Wily stages that weren't really robot masters...

Plus his theme is pretty awesome... :-D

DS is pretty specific about it - nothing except the traditional robot masters from MM1-10, M&B and the PSP remake (that is, Oil Man and Time Man). Most likely it'll be a moot point since he'll have the other four robots to pick from if Fake Man is ruled out, but... yeah.

The other side of this argument is that, in this scenario, we will be guaranteeing elimination of top notch remixers in the first round. Some sort of random assignment/pairing would probably be the most fair.

Personally i'm against this, i'm always against seeding things, i'm excited for the thrill of the matchings. Everyone loves an underdog, and i think a begginer would learn more and could even up their game going up against a veteran. Hey, you might even beat one of the big guns, imagine how great you'd feel then!

Thanks for the offer. I think the issue will be resolved shortly, though - see, the computer was needed for the business, and with it out of commission the business stalls. Not that it's a good thing, but it also means that I'll have help resolving it quickly, so I don't think I'll be missing out on this.

As for seeding the competition... no, that's not cool. It's actually really fun being the underdog, and it pumps you up to work hard when you're in that situation.

Hah oh I know... I really would love to join. May and June are all sorts of crazy for me though. I am defending my masters thesis the third week of May, getting married in June, and searching for a job in my new career during this entire time.

If it really came down to there being 31 people, then I suppose I could forgo sleep for awhile and do some remixing :sleepdepriv:, but I'd absolutely have to be in the second bracket, because there is no way I'll have time before my masters thesis is done.

However, since the match ups have yet to be posted, no one else has chosen that theme, and, to speak a little legalese, no one has detrimentally relied on the pairings, there should be no harm in allowing the switch if you want to.

EDIT: I should clarify that it's Tengu Man's Mega Man 8 theme I'm referring to, not his Mega Man & Bass one.

Here's an idea prophetik... you should run with that giant penis analogy. Slow down Spring Man's theme, add some deep bass and make it sound like a cheesy porno song. That would be awesome :wink:

naw, i'm just busting. no biggie. like i said originally, i don't know any of the music anyways, so it's a learning experience. i learn about games from their music usually =) so, according to this song, MM7 is pc shovelware preloaded on dell all-in-one computers. so there.

Well, it depends a lot on who your first match-up is against, too. I've been wanting to get into this scene for a while and figured compos are a great way to expedite the learning process. I've done a little composition and have just started to learn Reason, but my first submission here will be BY FAR my most ambitious project yet. I think there are a handful of us newbies scattered throughout the brackets. I'd be thrilled to make it past the first round but was never counting on it.

Aw, Knight Man's in the other bracket. I had some ideas for that one. Xarnax42, you and me. Final round. Let's show those n00bs PrototypeRaptor and WillRock how it's done.

You know what? Screw first-round elimination. You should get started on that mix now. 10 weeks SHOULD be enough time for you to have a chance.

You can get good results on that, just don't go crazy on phat synths or big samplers and you'll be fine. And multiband compressors. Your computer is about as fast as mine, if not faster. The Pentium 4 I read is around the same as the Athlon 64, and I have a mobile laptop version of that (which is significantly slower).

it's not about tech, people. it's about ideas. some of the best stuff i've heard came from fl 3.56 on a 1.8ghz p4. does tech make it easier? sure. goodness knows i spend money on it. but all the money in the world can't buy a good beat, or an interesting adaptation.

Shade Man's theme is awesome (I made a decent remix 7-8 years ago). I'm also a fan of Burst Man's theme, which is often overlooked. The intro stage and credits theme from MM7 are great too (although those obviously aren't Robot Master themes).

Remixer Numbers are assigned in order of listing in the official brackets (Mega Man is numbers 1-16, Proto Man is numbers 17-32), and obviously everyone gets their own name and mugshot.

Would it be too much trouble to place the name of the robot masters on there somewhere as well lol? Rather than the number(feels like an id number or somethin) why not just use the name of the robot, that's much easier to remember than a given number for each person.

It's a play on the DLN/DWN system. =) I was going to abbreviate it as RMX, but that's too confusing... I'll see about working the Robot Master names into the design somehow.
