Here's a link directly to the Team OverClocked Remix page on the FAH webpage (http://fah-web.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/main.py?qtype=teampage&teamnum=48303)
For those of you that don't know, FAH stands for Folding @ Home. Full information can be obtained here:
http://folding.stanford.edu/
Basically, FAH is a program that you download and run. It then sits in your taskbar and uses idle CPU power to render protein foldings. Once so many frames have been rendered, the compiled data is then sent back to Stanford so that it can be combined with other renders.
FAH has led to multiple scientific findings, which can be found on the webpage.
Now then, if you have the program, you can join a "Folding Team", where your scores are combined with the scores of other teammates to form a Team Score. Once you have completed one Work Unit, you will be added to Team OverClocked Remix on the FAH website.
Here's the team info:
Team Number: 48303
Team Name: OverClocked Remix
Just open up your configuration in the program and change your team from 0 (which is default) to 48303.
Something to note, once you join a team, all Work Unit credits start going to a new profile based on the team you're on. So you'll get something that looks like this:
http://fah-web.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/main.py?qtype=userpage&username=SILVERWOLF%5F87
You can also set the FAH program to use CPU power only when your screensaver comes on, instead of using CPU power all the time. However, I always let my FAH programs run all the time, and I can let it use 100% of my CPU power and still play any game fully maxed with no lag at all. The program also takes a lower priority in the process tree when another program is running. I'm sure my AMD Dual Core has something to do with it too ;)
So then, let's see how must computing power OCR has as a whole.

Yeah, this is styled like SETI@Home, only for (IMO) a much more practical and legitimate purpose. I'm only running on dial-up, but I'll see if I can be of any use in the next few days.
Do you know if we can be part of more than one team? Because I am already in one. But I would'nt mind being part of OC team too.
SILVERWOLF

What will happen is, once you join the OCR team, a new profile will be created with your name, and you can then switch back and forth between teams if you want, but only the team you specified in the program will get the Work Unit credit. But yeah, you can join multiple teams.

Even if you are on dialup, the only time you need an internet connection is when you're recieving the data package to be processed, or when you're sending to processed data back to stanford. Usually those pieces of data aren't larger than 5 megs.

I did a little searching, and it turns out that the program core will always take a low priority. This basically means that you can have the program running in the background all the time, and run other programs without any noticable difference in performance.

Cool. Never tried SETI@home cause I thought it was pointless. But this is actually useful. I'll give it a shot.

As soon as I get my other computer up [needs a copy of XP Pro], I'll have it going 24/7.
As well as being a permaseed for all OC torrents... multiple hard drives FTW!

Being on the OCReMix team sure beats being on the SA team just because my friend suggested it :). I recently formatted my compy, so I just re-installed Folding@Home now and am on the OCReMix team.

Yes. Just go to folding at home control panel and click on the display tab. The screensaver option is located there.

I calculated... if I ran my computer nonstop, I'd do about one workunit per two days... (The x/400 thing is one workunit for the 400, right?)... but I don't plan to be going that hard on my new equipment, so it'll probably be more like one WU per week or two.

There are arguments that it hurts your computer to run it non-stop, and there are arguments that it hurts your computer to not run it non stop. Neither side is very convincing.

Um..I've been letting it run nonstop for about a week now, basically just for Azureus and F@H most of the time...
Hope it doesn't break before I can buy a new one :whatevaa: (which I desperately need anyways...I want to play HL2  )

I leave my computer running for months at a time...it hasn't suffered any ill effects yet and I've had it for almost 6 years now.
I'm told turning computers on and off is bad for them because it puts stress on the components with the sudden rush of electricity, they can be shorted out or something I guess.
Running a computer too long might be bad if your computer generates a lot of heat I would suppose...
So maybe both theories are true....
Either way, my computer takes about the same amount of time to fold a unit of 2000 as it does a unit of 100. Which is about 2ish days.
Is anyone else here having problems with running F@H program and azureus at the same time? I noticed that when I was folding Gromacs core, both programs ran fine; but for the last few days I have been recieving Amber or Tinker core, which appear to be incompatible with Azureus for some reason.
I have installed and reinstalled the software ten times but it still doesn't work properly when Azureus is running.

You'd only recommend? Asking permission is more of a MUST. Even if you're the administrator of a network of computers you absolutely should ask whoever owns those boxen for permission. Ask them in person. And get the consent written, signed, and dated on paper and file it in a safe place.
Seriously. I recall a story about an administrator getting sued and/or fired for installing SETI@Home on several computers he administered without proof of permission to do so.

I have a question. Does the command line client run any faster than the graphical one? In terms of folding speed, anyway.
Unless you are looking at the graphics, or have them on the screen like the screensaver, I think they should be the same, but I haven't tested it.
If you're looking at the graphics it can slow down the processor, especially if its on-board video, since it has to render the graphics. Depending on the video card though, it might not slow it down much at all (I think i read the grapic is Open GL, while most video cards don't support it, but I could be wrong)
I also have a question about the command line client. Is there a way not to have it in the window? I can minimize it but it is still in the task bar...

Well, it is the middle of winter, so anyone with an electricity based heating system (not gas / oil) would see an increase...
I did see a cost breakdown of running a project like this, and I think it came out to about 30-40 cents a day, which I think counts on leaving the monitor off. Even if you round up to a dollar a day for a power hungry machine, its not going to be an extra $300 unless your running a LOT of computers...
'Course, you can always do what I do and run it on the computers at work  :!: But for the love of pete get permission! :!:

Do a virus scan. The same thing happened to me a few months ago. After the virus was deleted, things went back to normal for me.

That sucks. Maybe you should present your case at F@H forums. I am sure they will able to help you out more so than the rest of us. I haven't heard of AVG before so I am not sure if that program also detects and removes spyware and/or adware. You can use ad aware (http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/) and spybot (http://www.spybot.info/en/index.html) for that. That might help.

I have had a couple of instances where AVG Free didn't detect a virus. You may want to try another anti-virus program as well to make sure it comes up negative. ClamWin is open source and free. It's slower than a lot of engines and you have to manually take care of the infected file, but it seems to do a pretty good job actually detecting the stuff.

It only takes up bandwidth when you download or 'turn in' a project. Most of the time the program just sits there computing and doesn't use any bandwidth.
First, you have to download the program (less than half a MB), then once it's running it download what's called a core; a small chunk of data that's usually less than 5 MB's. When it's done computing, it uploads the results. I don't know how big the result is, but it never takes very long on my dial up connection (less than a minute).
The program is only CPU intensive, and really does not take up much HDD space or RAM (currently its 20MB of RAM on this computer). It's nice though, because FAH gives itself the lowest priority possible in Windows (you can bump it up, if you like) which means that if you're doing anything else, it gets full priority until it's done. When it says it uses spare CPU cycles, it really ONLY uses those spare or unused cycles.
Give it a try, and if you don't like it, uninstall it. Also, it gives you an estimate of how long it will take until the unit is done. It will take a little bit to get an accurate measurement of your machine, so it may say something like several hundred days; just be patient and it will come down. It should be around a day or two to a week, depending on your CPU's speed and how much you leave your computer on.

I think all you need is your original user name. However, any work that you did for another team (or no team) can't be added to a new team that you join (ours, I'm assuming  ). So to get back all your original stats, you have to join the same team. (I think that's how it works.. might be worth a cruise through the FAQ's)
If it was uninstalled form your computer, or you're installing it on a new computer, it won't update those offline stats. When you open up the program display it shows your name, team number, work units completed, etc. That work units completed is only the work units that that computer has done. For example, when I open it up on my current computer, it says I have done 60 WU's, but my online stats are 180. The remaining WU's were done by a different computer (or three :)!! )

Yeah, I ran BOINC for a little bit before I joined this one. I did like how it made it easier to manage multiple projects, but there were still a few things that bugged me about it. I think they should have made it where you joined BOINC, and then worked on whatever projects you like, instead of having to register with every individual project... Should have been more like an all you can eat buffet, instead of a food court, if you can figure that analogy out
I guess my other complaint is along those same lines... there wasn't any way to have a team do multiple projects, you created a team for each project...
While I was looking around the Folding site, I found a thread that said they were considering moving to the BOINC client, but the thread was old, from '04 I think, so I wouldn't hold my breath...

For anyone thinking about getting a PS3, you might be able to fold on it. (http://dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=3910) There's also some comments about folding using GPU's (http://folding.stanford.edu/FAQ-highperformance.html), though it looks like only ATI.
Something strange - I haven't been able to acquire any new packets to work on. Most odd.
I was checking out a tech forum that had a folding team and read a few of their threads (spying on the enemy, I suppose). One thing that was mentioned was that they had stopped issuing, or had run out, of 'deadlineless' work packets. I have one computer that is set up to do the deadlineless work packets since it's a little slow, and it has been unable to download any new WU's. It's an easy option to change in the configure menu, under advanced, at the bottom. Might fix it for you, if you're still having problems.

Well, I don't know that I can recruit any actual people, but I am starting a new job tomorrow and may be able to get a few computers there folding, but we'll have to see... The computers I'm using at my current job (technically 3, but one is super slow and isn't on much) will still be folding, but I don't know how much they'll stay on, or if the folding program will be removed.
Oh, I did have a question to ask. Does the folding program disable the screen saver for anyone else? On my new computer at home the screen saver never comes on while it's working on a WU. Once it's done, before I connect to get a new packet (dial-up), the screen saver has come on then... any thoughts? The screen saver is just a generic windows screen saver, not the folding one.

Since this thread has been around in gendisc since last year, I think it would be a good idea if this thread is turned into an announcement or at least stickied so that it remains on front page. Would it be worth it to create another forum page just for OCR teams? There's our folding team, and it periodically pops up with teams for games and such,:
Team OCRemix [Halo2 Clan] (http://www.ocremix.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=56607)
That was just the one I happened to find first, but I know there are more... Just thinking it might be better the having a ton of stickes at the top of the page...
I also added my computer at work, but sadly it is about a 500MHz CPU, so it's hardly going to be cranking out the WU's... There are some other computers around, and quite a nice server room, but I think they have more important things to be doing...

I'd like to get involved, and i read the first post stuff, but i don't get what this is all about
You should take a look at this (http://folding.stanford.edu/).
What is protein folding and how is folding linked to disease? Proteins are biology's workhorses -- its "nanomachines." Before proteins can carry out these important functions, they assemble themselves, or "fold." The process of protein folding, while critical and fundamental to virtually all of biology, in many ways remains a mystery.
Moreover, when proteins do not fold correctly (i.e. "misfold"), there can be serious consequences, including many well known diseases, such as Alzheimer's, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, Huntington's, Parkinson's disease, and many Cancers and cancer-related syndromes.
So this program basically uses a little bit of computing power from your pc and folds protiens. All of this data can help biologists understand how the whole protein folding process works and why it doesn't work in certain cases.
