And now it's time for...
OverClocked Remix Music Video Challenge 5
We will have an IRC viewing party the evening of the challenge's deadline. The tentative deadline for this challenge is Sunday, August 21. I wanted to pick a time towards the end of the summer because the summer is a tricky time when everyone goes on vacations and has other things planned. Hopefully that day will work for everyone, but I will leave it open to discussion, and if too many people have conflicts, we can move the date.
IRC viewing party details
Sunday, August 21 @ 9 PM EST
irc.esper.net #ocrmvc
The guidelines for participating are simple:
1. Pick a posted OCReMix. Posted album tracks from official OCR albums are OK, too.
1b. If you wish, you may share which remix you have chosen so that we don't all pick your chosen remix. However if you would rather keep yours secret, that's fine too. I will say though, that there are plenty of remixes to choose from, and we've never had any repeats so far.
2. Make a music video! But please, nothing so inappropriate or vulgar that it would break the YouTube guidelines.
3. Upload your video to YouTube as unlisted. (From YouTube: "Unlisted" means that only people who know the link to the video can view it. The video will not appear in any of YouTube's public spaces, such as search results, your channel, or the Browse page, but the link can be shared with anyone.)
4. PM me the link before the deadline.
Other ways to participate
Making a music video can be a big project, that might benefit from collaborating with others. If you're interested in participating but don't have the means/time/energy to make your own video from start to finish, I encourage you to post in this thread to let us know what skills or equipment you can provide and what sort of people you might be looking to collaborate with. There are many different skills that could be used in making a music video, such as: camera work, lighting, acting, modeling, dancing, photography, drawing, video editing, providing props or set or costumes... the ideas are really limitless. So don't be afraid to jump into the discussion and start a collaboration with others.
Participants
- Chernaborgue
- Darangen
- diotrans/Arrow/Kizyr possibly perverted, possibly not perverted collab
- setzertrancer

- consequently, Modus & LAOS
Call for volunteers
The previous OCRMVCs have been a success, and we would like to see it grow and expand to more participants and viewers. We always welcome any volunteers who want to help promote the OCRMVC. Ways you can help include creating a promotional banner or trailer video, or promoting the OCRMVC in any other forums or communities where it might reach interested people.
We also have a YouTube channel (http://www.youtube.com/ocrmvc), so you can also help us out by promoting the channel, which has links to the videos from the previous challenges.

Erm... maybe. The only reliable break I have this summer is -after- 8/21, since my summer classes end on 8/22.
I'll be at the listening party, definitely, but I don't want to imply I can make a video until I'm more certain I'll actually have time to do so. KF

BUMP!
I was hoping we'd get a little more response than this ^_^;
Well, I might as well express interest, obviously. Is anybody in the area interested in collabing again? (the area = NoVA/MD/DC area.) I always have ideas for music videos, but nothing solid that I'm dead set on this time, so I'm up for brainstorming.
And to anybody who was interested in our last challenge but didn't make the deadline, now is your change to redeem yourself and finish up your video this time around!

I'm too lazy to do anything myself, but if there's any collabing going on, I'm totally down.

Well you can certainly sign me up. it probably won't be Pirate Shout yet. But I have an idea I've wanted to work on since the last OCMVC. I will warn you though that if I am without a computer it may not happen, I say this because my computer has been scaring me lately with it's age and behaviour. But I can assure you that that and death will be the only things that will be preventing me from coming up with something, hopefully better yet again. I have to admit though my last one will be hard to outdo.
I will not announce the mix this time as at the last comp I change my mind and disappointed the remixer. It could happen again if I have a better idea and I actually haven't listened to new mixes for a while so who knows.
Oh and my plan is for my first live action one!!
Good Luck everyone I look forward to seeing many quality entries yet again.
edit: Lol thanks diotrans I'm flattered that you asked about me. I checked back in the forums often shortly after the last comp and then took a break from checking for a while.

I would like to enter very much! I was going to last year, but then my computer blew up while I was making my music video and I've always been sad about it...
So this time I'm definitely in!

Cool nice and early I have already come up with an idea and will probably start tonight. I have changed to a plan to not make it live action. Instead it will be animated. I am just now asking permission to use a fellow Youtuber's work as what I edit with. Plus I'm actually entering it an a competition she is running simultaneously, I need her permission to enter it here as well. If I can't I should have plenty of time to make 2 videos.
I currently listening to the newest OCremixes for inspiration.
If you guys like you can give me suggestions as I think you all know my taste in music now.

I have finished a new Music Video. However I have had to publicly release it in order to enter another contest and hopefully gain viewers and subscribers from that. Hopefully that shouldn't disqualify me from at least showing it at OCRMV5. In order to not spoil it for yourselves that are subscribed to me don't check out my latest Youtube video titled 'Forever Young Rachel'. Yes that's the remix I chose. I won't even link it. There is still a lot of time left so I could have more vids before the deadline.
I am anticipating a computer upgrade soon, which means better videos as editing with this ancient one has been difficult.

Hey everyone I have some bad news, some good news, some more good news and more bad news. The bad news is that I have found a different place for inspirational music. But the good news is that means I have made a 2nd Music Video, But it's not an OCremix.
The more good news is that I am right now working on a 3rd Music Video with a more powerful computer then I've ever had and better software so it's going to be spectacular. The more bad news is that is is unfortunately another Non-OCremix song.
So if you don't mind me breaking the rules of the OCR only videos I will have a lot to show at this competition. I hope my frequent participation will have earned at least a look from my viewers here.
The new source of inspirational songs comes from a recent Fandom that I have bought into. I wonder if any of you can guess what it is. But anyway it is so big that I am getting 10 times more views and attention then ever.
Lastly I would like to officially thank the existence of this competition for motivating me to develop my video editing skills and decide to pursues a career in it. I thank everyone hear for everything. See you at the next viewing party.

I also demand it! Thank you everybody for piping up and keeping this thread alive ^_^; How's everyone's videos going?
To setzer: So err, between all you good and bad news, do you have any OCR videos? ^_^; I don't think we can really bend the rules to include MLP videos at our viewing party, as cool as that might be, but I think it would kind of defeat the purpose of an OCRMVC and trying to promote OCRs through MVs, etc. However I am very happy for you that you are getting more publicity now, and of course glad that we were a part of you getting your start. It would suck if we only have 2 dio.
I should be able to get another music video to you that will require little effort. I will just make a compilation of partial OCR music videos I've done as part of vlogs and other things.
My main problem with this though is that my old computer died, which I've now recovered, but I lost nearly everything so my original videos are gone, but are on my Youtube channel. However for some reason free Yooutube downloader won't work, my trial of Internet Download Manager has expired and Google chrome downloader doesn't work either.
Any alternatives guys?

08-16-2011, 05:35 AM
Well, I usually prefer not to extend a deadline, unless it looks like we will gain a lot of videos as a result, and we don't disrespect/piss off too many people who worked hard to get to the deadline. In this case, it doesn't look like we will gain many videos from an extension. (Sorry Modus, but also the fact that you said you would need a lengthy extension factored into my decision here; if you could have come up with something in an extra week, that would make things slightly different.) So unless this thread suddenly gets a whole bunch of people absolutely promising that they could finish some videos if only they had another week or so, then we are on for the viewing party this Sunday, and I hope to see more than just the one link to a video in my inbox between now and then. >.>

Less Ashamed Of Self
08-16-2011, 09:35 PM
Hit an interesting snag... apparently if I take long video clips (ie: 4 minutesish of my 5 minute cap) the file size triggers an I/O error when I try and move it off my camera. Can't say it's unfair considering a 4 minute, uncompressed, 720p clip off my camera is over 400MB, but it still makes certain footage inaccessable.
I have a few ideas about how I might still be able to deal with this issue, but it might wind up being the thing that sinks me this round. We'll see.

Anyway I won't be able to be at the viewing party, because I have something very important to do at 9:00am exactly when it starts for the rest of you.

I wish you all luck, and I will be working non stop this weekend, with several responsibilities that have piled up all at once, including my second Music video for this competition.
I must say I'm disappointed at the lack of entries this time.
But I can't really talk as I could have had another 4 videos for OCRMV if they fit the rules, but sometimes I have to look outside of what's familiar for inspiration.
But it is still this competition alone that inspired me to make Music Videos, up until this new motivation.

The video quality is low unfortunately, but that is youtube's fault for their determination to stop people from downloading videos with even the best software.

None you the animation was done by me, all the footage was provided by ThunderKathryn who is producing her own animated series called Wolf Song, almost all on her own. Which is very admirable. I am voice acting a few minor characters in it and have been supporting her efforts for a very long time now.
Yes the color lines were captured from a Windows Media Player visualisation. But all the flashes were customly key framed in one by one.
The last song featured in my compilation Double Trouble by Team Rocket was not an OCR. It was from the official Pokemon cartoon Album. I know that broke the rules but I was proud of my work on it and wanted to show it off anyway.
Sorry about the blank bit at the end. I was in a hurry and didn't have time to check my upload very carefully.

Sucks about my tech hiccup. It was a long shot. Say what you will though, I consider 6 vids a decent turnout. Very glad to see this challenge is going strong.
Stevo, you definitely should co-ordinate with Amy next time. It would be better for everyone that way now that ocad is live. :D Last thing we need within the OCR community is squabbling over competing for the same time block. That's just unnecessary.

Amy, I dunno if Cherna decided to spam your compo with this, but he did it without my knowledge or consent. Feel free to remove the link.
I would never have disrespected the hardwork of everyone here by shamelessly self-promoting my own project. Just wanted to clarify this.
OCRMVC is a great compo, and I'd love to join it in the future. :)

Oh, I thought I had told you. :?
As you said we (artists from the project) could spread the word about it, I felt OCRMVC would be a good place. Plus the number of video was really low this time (only four or so vids from setzer and I), I thought it could help a bit the compo... I feel sorry and I'd excuse myself if I did something wrong to you or to the project... :???:

Alex, I'm positive: you did not warn me about this. But I don't blame you for being enthusiastic man. It's okay.
The problem is that you've misrepresented the video by not stating that it wasn't made for OCRMVC nor had anything to do with OCReMixes.
I'd have liked to spare Amy from this kind of spamming, simply because there is already a thread for the project on this very site.
So you should be apologizing to Amy and the other people who entered this compo instead.
Hopefully, everything has been clarified now.

It's true it wasn't really a music video for an OCReMix, but then, some of our entries kind of bent the rules a bit. I have more thoughts on this, later on I'll write a more in-depth post. For now, I'll leave the link, unless anyone strongly objects to it.

Finally got a chance to watch. Chernagbogue, that Metroid video was phenomenal, especially the second half where there's a little more action to match the the music. Also, really cool to see such a difference in your work since the KH vid.
I was really looking forward to setzertrancer's videos, too, but the videos all appear to have been removed.

I'm really sorry. I will get them up as soon as I can, but there are a lot of videos that take higher priority so it may take awhile.

setzer that's horrible ;_; ;_; I can't believe they would even let you do something like that without some kind of undo function or warning. That sucks. Let us know when you upload the vids again.

Hello OCRMVCers and fans! Get ready for yet another way-too-long post by diotrans!!
So I'd like to start off by saying that I'm proud of us for running for almost 2 years now, and having collectively come up with so many OCR music videos. Thanks to all our participants and fans for keeping this going! I do have to say, however, that I feel that there has been a drop-off in participation and enthusiasm in general, with this last challenge. It's great that we had so many videos, but I'm a little disappointed that we only had 2 contributors.
I am not really happy with the way that I have been running the OCRMVC. I am normally a conscientious and organized person. However, this has been an extremely challenging year for me, and a series of events in my personal life that started many months ago has consumed all of my energy and left me unable to focus on even my own personal creative goals. As a result, I have been unable to give the OCRMVC the attention I feel it deserves, and I feel that it has suffered as a result.
While the entries in OCRMVC have mostly been solo entries, I still view it as a collaborative challenge, and believe that the energy that the participants have put into it has fed into itself and inspired others. In other words, the more people we had that were really into it, and were vocal about their projects in the thread, the more that inspired others to start and finish their videos. I think that's a really great thing. However, I am finding I no longer have this energy to put into the community, at least, not at the moment with everything I'm struggling with.
So I would like to say that I would prefer not to run the OCRMVC anymore, and I don't think that I should. I think it would do well to have somebody with more energy, who can not only organize but also keep people inspired and find ways to bring the energy back into the challenge. On the other hand, if me stepping down is going to cause the OCRMVC to stop altogether, I would rather just keep running it the way it has been going, rather than to let it die. So, 1. are there any takers who would be interested in taking over running the OCRMVC? 2. if not, then I will volunteer to at least continue keeping up the rudimentary functions of maintaining the thread, and scheduling and running the viewing party.
In any case, whatever happens with the OCRMVC, it will always have my support, and I will still be around in the thread, at the viewing parties, or if somebody else ends up taking over and has any questions for me.

Thank you dio for all your hard work.
I would love to say I can take over the viewing party, but my life can get pretty unexpectedly busy too. I will have a think about it and maybe if no one else can step up I will.
I won't make any promises though unless I can have at last one entry so I maybe If I can be sure I'll have a music video for the next one, I may host the next OCRMV. However I will not be able to have it in the next 8 weeks, because I will be very busy with school. After that date I should have more free time.

sorry to hear you're so busy, diotrans. You've done a really great job so far.
I'm interested in trying to run it, but it would be silly of me to commit to something like this right now. I'm so behind on work I've promised people... other obligations have to take priority for now. I do have ideas to bring back energy to the competition though. I'll share those with whomever steps up.
I love video. I identify myself with it strongly, much more than music.. so if I ever am in a position to run this contest, I'd really love to. The time isn't right yet, but if it ever is I just want that information to be known.

Oh I didn't see replies here.
I have a busy year ahead and I don't think I could run the compo (I'm not even sure to be at every viewing party...), but for sure, I'll try to keep it alive! :)

I waited a few days before responding to this. I wanted to make sure I addressed the issue(s) OCRMVC faces appropriately.
I think that any creativity focused community struggles with a lot of the same issues online. Finding communal motivation, meeting deadlines, finding energy, encouraging others, overcoming technical difficulties, and a necessary push in advertisement in general plague our condition. It's trying, and has been worth overcoming... but it's also nothing surprising or new.
IRL, one can actually hang out with a person and push them on progress, or collaborate a little more easily, or bitch them out if they need to get up off their ass. The ONLINE factor, (and this ISN'T a shot at your current predicament Dio, I'm included in this group as well) is one where claims of 'I'm really busy...', or 'Life's hectic right now...' go unvalidated and have to be taken at face value. I'm not saying any of us WEREN'T actually busy when we said we were, I'm just pointing out how voluntary this all really is.
We see this in other variations of our field too; remixes and remix project collaborations, and with various video things on the Internet; channel101 and 101ny... contests...
I knew coming to a group of gamer/nerd/musicians on a video game remixing site, who didn't really make music videos, that the group of interested people would be scarce. It's like how when you have a facebook invite that has 25 people in confirmed or maybe, and then only 10 show up... intention might be there, but you round down. So when I started the first challenge with Biznut I started a couple spam threads on various nerd/video/music boards to try and attract as much non-ocr attention as possible. I was immediately looking towards potential prizes to try and attract people from outside the OCR community.
I'm really not too discouraged by the response we've been getting, nor do I think that the dwindling numbers is a sure-fire sign that anything here hasn't worked. The videos we have made (except for maybe in the case of setzertrancer who deleted his account) AREN'T GOING ANYWHERE. We have much more reason to be proud and optimistic than defeated or discouraged.
I wanted to put in my two cents... I'll leave it at this for tonight. As for where we might go from here, I have an idea or two, but I'll leave that for another night.

Hey Less Ashamed, I am still here. I deleted my videos by accident. I am still very interested in the next competition if an when it starts. As long as the deadline isn't in the next 6 weeks. I should be good to go.

I'm posting this here because I have an idea for a music video, and I need your help. I need videos of you and/or friends rockin' out/gettin' down/etc. There is no preferred filetype or size or length (longer the better; more content to work with). When I finish the video, I'll post it here after getting clearance from the proper people for you all to see.
In summation, PM me video clips of people (you and/or others) rockin' out/gettin' down/etc. Everyone shall get proper credit, don't worry. Please help me out here! Thank you. :D

This contest is probably my main impetus for getting out a video one of these days. I won't have any time until next summer, though, after I get my degree... that much I know.
I kind of wouldn't mind taking it up after then, if possible. It's a lot of fun every time, even if I'm just in the audience. KF

Well guys, I'm interested in this competition, I still love it dearly and want to see it go places... but if you haven't checked out what I'm up to lately; check my sig.
:D
If someone, again, feels like taking the reins here, they have my blessing and I will be watching/maybe participating.

I meant that in a "I'm getting impatient for this to be rebooted" kind of way. Not that I'm officially about to reboot it. It's been long enough that I'm at least going to start messaging diotrans about it. Whether or not she's ready to bring it out of hiatus, I think it's about time we somehow got the ball rolling again.
dio did a really nice job organizing it so far though. I hope she can keep doing it.
